Very nice lady but beware of the tests!
i think she talks too fast, but shes a great professor, fair tests and a fair courseload. shes very nice also.
she seems like a nice lady; but the course is difficult with difficult tests requires attendence and goes through materical very quickly; it is a lot of work and you really have to understand and follow what she is saying
she is really nice..willing to stay late to help you..tests are fair..she goes a little quickly..there isn't a lot of reading..no term papers
Very fair, will allow extra credit assignments, not much reading.
her course was fun and very informative. her tests were not hard at all.. and shes very interested in all her students doing well so she volunteers her own time to help us out.
she makes no sence i cant understand her and her tests are pretty tricky. the class is not informative just basic knowledge put into a confusing way
i think this prof is very helpful and goes out of her way to assist you if you don't understand. her tests are a little tough though, but the great notes she gives really guides you!
She's not bad. Good notes. She's very knowledgable and very nice, but she's not a passionate teacher. A little boring, but managable. But REALLY beware the exams. I'm a straight-A student, and I study a lot before a test, and I got a B on the midterm ON A CURVE! Don't miss class. Or get the notes.
She's ok. Don't be like me and study last minute for exams, but luckily she grades on a curve and offers extra credit. She's nice and u can meet her if u have any questions or need help. The material is pretty straightforward, just memorize it beforehand.
Very good professor. She knows the material inside and out and is good at presenting it. Her tests are tough but linguistics in a tough discipline. Don't take her class if you're not willing to read the material.
gives good notes
Don't take her. Her classes are boring as hell. Tests are fair. Lectures are very long and very boring.
Dr. Makhara is the best professor I have had at Queens. Highly recommended.
Hi, first of all i took this teacher becus of the comments i read on this site. she is not what these people say. she will help u lower your GPA by giving u the hardest exams available. three parts true and false multiple choice and short answers the hardest class evee i have had hard classes not
She isn't that bad her class is veryyyy boring though, lectures seem never ending. Her exams arent that bad but i found the final to be a bit treaky.
very nice & friendly, but her class is not EZ... she explains every thing very clearly, very helpful, but very hard grader... exams are not tht hard, no hwks,u just have to work hard to get good grades, her test are based on lectures,,, over all its a hard class but nice professor...
Nice professor, very helpful. Exams are hard but she curves based on class performance. Overall, just pay attentation to the class, and review your notes before the exam. It is not an easy A, but a very easy B.
horrible teacher, screqwed me over i recieved a A on all three exams and she failed me she is a horrible teacher
this really was the worst class ive ever taken in my life. i dont even have one good thing to say - i had straight A's in all my other classes and she lowered my GPA drastically. i studied like crazy for her class almost 2 weeks before the final and still could not pull the A. if you want her to mes
She is a nice lady and fair grading. Shows a lot of videos.
I'm taking her class now and so far the class is interesting, but can be boring at times. Her tests are a bit tricky, but as long as you go to class and study for a few hours you'll do fine. Tests are based on her lectures.
shes nice no hww juz copy the notes n study for her exam n ur ready to go
HER CLASS IS SOO BORING...SHE SHOWS ALOT OF VIDEO BUT HE TEST IS SOO CONFUSING THE ANSWER IS TRYING TO TRICK THE STUDENTS AND ITS LIKE A BRAIN TEASER
This class is pretty interesting plus we watch videos occasionally. Not too easy, but it is not like math or chemistry. Teacher is hot too.
Very boring teacher, you will never watch the clock tick more then in her class. All she uses are computer slides for notes, and there so damn annoying
Besides being nice, and an easy class, she's HOT! Take her, even if you don't need the credit!!!
She knows her material and was very friendly. She seems very concerned about whether or not her students understand the material and is rather accomodating. Her classes aren't easy though, but if you try, you'll do well.
Dont take her!!!!!
a very nice professor, very helpful and understandable. just go to the lecture and take good notes and u will get a good grade. 3 exams including a final which is cumulative.she gives reviews be4 every exams. review sheet really helps. she also gives an extra credit paper which can really help ur grade.
Lang/Cult/Society. Very sweet, amiable, upbeat prof. Also not very dynamic most of the time, and classes can be boring. English not native language. Uses overhead proj. to give notes. Shows films. Some discussion, mostly lecture. Fair exams, largely MC and fill-ins. Moderate reading. Paper for extra-credit. Linguistic Anthropology is her specialty.
even though she is really sweet-i cannot help but fall asleep in her class. It is a very boring class-but if u need to take it, its not that bad.her tests are not easy but i guess there fair and no one shows up after 2 weeks of class
i didnt like this class at all. everyone stops going after a couple of weeks. people just show up for her tests which are kinda hard but i guess thats cause i wasnt interested in it. her accent is really bad and i never knew what she was saying. she gave alot of notes but no paper or homework besides the readings. i did bad, she put me to sleep.
BORING! but if you get old tests its an easy A. just dont bother going and get her slides that she posts online. shes nice and understanding and gives a MAJOR curve. she shows a lot of boring documentaries and everyone sleeps thru the class. take it if you want an easy A that covers a LASAR and just make sure to get old tests
DO NOT ENTER CLASS IF YOU ARE EXTREMELEY STONED!!!! ITS A BUG-OUT MAN!!!
she is nice but boring.... not helpful at all
Professor Makihara was great. She's very neat and organized. Her tests are so simple and she curves the tests based on how the rest of the class performs. You have to be real slow not to do well in her classes.
the class was a little boring, but she is a very sweet person. the only downside is that she is so easy going that a lot of people take advantage of that and talk the entire time. she teachers in a very precise and organized manner. anthro 104 is def. not a class to take if you are not interested in the subject.
This class is torture. The most boring class ever. However, it is an easy A if you have tests which she re-uses. Get in touch with someone who took her. She uses powerpoint slides that you are supposed to copy down as notes, but those slides are made available by her on the internet. Take her if you don't mind crying of boredom for an A.
Horrible, I dont know what she was teaching in 2006, and now that its 2008 a minchia fugghedabout it. She makes sure that you dont understand the test questions , our second test was curved approx 35 points, thats how bad the class did, dont take her, if u want the tests i got em, i dont know how they would help.
shes a sweet person however the class is fundamentally boring she makes no sense and her tests are difficult i suggest to look for a better professor
Makihara is very nice but she often rambles and loses the class quickly. Her notes are all over the place and unorganized so when you study you go back and forth between her articles notes and textbook. I agree that people often will talk and take advantage of her niceness but you'll do fine in the class as long as you study her notes and articles.
Take her. Don't buy the book, don't go to class and study the slides before tests which are heavily curved and you can still get an easy A.
i want to know whether to take this class and the info isn't clear. if you're smart and a good student can you get an A, or are her tests extremely difficult. also do the old tests help- and does anyone have them who's still in queens c.
iDK what all these people are talkin about. Prof Makihara was awesome! In the begininning of the semester she did take attendance but stopped towards the end. If you study the notes and read the articles that she assigns there is no way even a retard can't get an A in this class. Don't buy the textbook you don't need it. Def reccomended
professor makihara is relatively boring...most people stop showing up after the first couple weeks of class. She means well and is probably one of the nicest people on earth, but her class is really just not so interesting. Not hard though, and attendance/textbook are both unecessary
shes great. shes easy. i like her shes nice and available after class.
I would recommend this women to anyone! She is very helpful and organized. Easy and interesting!
She's very nice, fairly easy, and extremely boring.
she uses slides that make no sense, her tests are extremely hard and everyone does badly in her class. Do not take this class if you don't have to. biggest mistake of my semester. i spent hours studying and only pulled off 80s on her tests.
She is such a nice lady and she gives curves on the tests! I will admit the class is a little tough but extremely interesting. I'm taking her for linguistic anthropology seminar and I'm really looking forward to it.
She's a very kind woman and will do anything within her power to help you digest the material during office hours. The subject area was too difficult, but manageable if you're into Linguistic Anthropology. Quizzes were easy but her exams were extremely difficult. Was not a fan of her powerpoint slides. Take her if you must.
She's AWESOME ! I loved her !
She's really nice. No textbook required. Easy class, easy grade, 3 testes, 10 online hws. Definitely take the class if you like the topic n want an A. N the test is like so easy if u just read the slides n go through the readings. O just find the answer when u got the review sheet.
She's really nice and tries hard to help you understand the material. Her slides are rather dull (I fell asleep a few times) but all HW questions are derived from the slides. Her exams are fair - just really memorize the slides and read the questions carefully. It's easy to do well in this class. Recommended for anyone interested in anthropology!
Professor Makihara is really one of the great professors at qc. i would recommend her class to anyone. she works with slides and is really east to follow. shes very accommodating and gives extra credit if you need. you have to study for her test but theyre straightforward, she wants her student to succeed. great personality and positive energy,
She is really nice and helpful. There are curves on the exams, which I didn't do so well on even though I studied, but they really aren't that bad. Just too specific - study the powerpoints and articles and you should be good. There is extra credit and class can be very boring sometimes so sit in the front to hear everything she says.
Honestly if you don't do well in her class, you didn't try. She is easy and very helpful. She posts the lectures online and the readings are very easy to understand. The exams are multiple choice and she reviews everything in class. She also very nice and if you go to her for help she will make sure you understand.
She is the best. The whole class did bad on the midterm and she curved the bad grades to the good ones. She is a wonderful person
She is one of my favorite professors so far at QC. She is incredibly understanding and I admit at times lectures are boring but overall tolerable. Pay attention during lectures and you will be fine.
Very energetic and good teacher. She gives homework (5 questions) before every class. Lots of readings. Tests were fair and easy if you read the assigned readings and study the power points (which she puts up on blackboard after each class). Gives extra credit.
The class is mainly note taking with some group work occasionally. She is a very sweet teacher but this subject is not for me so I found It quite dreadful. There is always online homework that has 5 questions every time. I wish her slides were more organized!!
I thought she was a sweetheart like everyone says but she honestly is boring. I had a hard time playing attention, her lectures really have you bored. Her tests are kind of tricky tbh BUT they are heavily curved. I got a 50 my first exam and she curved it to a C+. She gives extra credit like small tasks and an essay. 5 question online hws too.
So shes super nice but very boring. Her tests are kind of difficult but she heavily curves in her class and wants u to do well. A lot of opportunities for extra credit. And for those of you who expect to cheat in her class good luck she assigns seats for the exams, sitting a seat apart. And someone stands there and watches everyone so no phones :(
lectures are boring but if you come to class and do the homework you should have no problem getting an A. I recommend her if you just need to take the class but not really be involved
Caring professor, sweet and accessible, but easily the WORST, most boring, most pointless class you could take. Homework due every class based on readings that you have to do for EVERY class which are like 10 pages long MINIMUM. It's not difficult though. I barely read anything at all and got a A-. I still recommend never taking this boring class.
Professor Makihara is a good lecturer but often times seems to overcomplicate things. Exams were fair nothing overbearing. H.W. was based on readings assigned.
She is sweet and gives a lot of extra credit. The class is a bit boring to be honest, but because an Individual and Society class is mandatory, she is a good professor.
She's great. She really cares and is accessible.
There was a lot of readings but I relaized it was the same for every 104 class, they follow the same structure. So the work will be the same for any 104 class, however she is caring and gives the most curve, so take her.
Took this course years ago, and I will always remember it. Definitely take anthro 104.
Ignore all the bottom ratings since that was in person, I took her for the online course and she is amazing. With the heaving readings, same goes for any class so its not just her giving the work. Many extra credits are given and she is very caring, she is very nice so please be nice to her.
Professor Makihara is super friendly and kind. However, her and Newman are very meticulous about how they want their papers written and posters made. You will read a lot and are expected to extract a lot of information from the readings. Time management is important for these professors. Overall decent professor and course.
Very easy. To get an A for this class, all you need to do is do your weekly homework and show up to class. No exams, quizzes, or projects.
She's a nice professor. Be prepared to read. Homework is due at the start of every class. You'll realize a lot of things about languages in terms of cultural meaning and social meaning. She has over hundreds of students, so if you don't raise your hand and participate, you will blend in with all the other students. There is one exam.
She requires students to buy a program. Her readings are long and the documentaries are long as well. Two hw assignments a week. She does way too much IMO
I'd take her again if I had to in a heartbeat. There's 1 written exam and less work in general. Just do the Top Hat assignments and you're good.
She's great but I think she would be more cut out for a smaller classroom. Lectures are long and some of them are heavy I didn't think that was necessary cause the online material she provides is good enough. Students just have to be responsible and put the effort in. I think she should work on speaking up or into the microphone a little better.
She's really passionate about anthro. she always wants people engaged and really appreciates participation, but since the class is in a large lecture hall it is not expected. She is very understanding with missing homeworks, and before the midterm (two short one page papers to do at home), final (short mult.choice) and gives all info and reviews.
She's really passionate about anthro. always wants people engaged and appreciates participation, but since the class is in a large lecture hall it is not expected. She is very understanding with missing homeworks, which is every class :( , and before the midterm (2 one page papers to do at home), final (short mult.choice) and gives reviews.
I do not advise anyone to take this class unless they desperately need to do so. It is structured very poorly and you will end up crying at the end of the semester when you work on your final project. That being said, Professor Makihara is a wonderful joy to have and she is very understanding, its just that her class made me regret my existence.
Her lectures aren't a drag to listen to, she loves hearing different people participate and to mention and explain their culture. Although some of the readings and videos can be long, she does care to give you as many chances to pass. She is understanding, very kind, , and a knowledgeable professor. Highly recommend her class to anyone.
prof. makihara is very nice and helpful but be prepared for a frequent workload. she assigns homework every class, it's usually reading an article and/or watching a video and answering 3-10 questions. thankfully, she offers extra credit, curves grades, and drops the lowest homework scores off your average.
she's awesome!
Not only a great professor, but one of the most genuine and caring professors I've ever had. She gets the class engaged and makes lectures really enjoyable. I always look forward to Professor Makihara's class! Absolutely take her if you can, especially if ANTH is your thing, she's wonderful. Make sure you do the assignments, there's lots!
Professor Makihara is really sweet and caring. The only downside is the amount of readings. There is a reading every lecture, and hw once a week (Mainly multiple choice), and daily in-class multiple choice quizzes (only 2 questions). She gave 3 extra credit opportunities to write an 1000 word essay. If you do the hw and in class quiz, you can pass
Professor Makihara is so cheerful and bubbly and loves teaching; her lectures were really engaging—they were never boring. Weekly homework assignments, easy quizzes and her exams are straight from the slides. There are multiple opportunities for extra credit. Take her; you won't regret it!
Her assignments are multiple choice questions on the readings which is weekly. Only test is final which is 50 multiple choice questions plus 150 word paragraph on our favorite topic. I managed to have an A in the class but got curved to an A+
How I managed to get an A was a miracle. Whole semester, could not pay attention, was always doing other hw or on my phone. The content of this course wasn't for me, seemed irrelevant. I don't recommend not studying for the final like I did but do all the hw and you'll be fine. Don't recommend but if you have to, eh. Study sheet for final & xtra cr
how is someone complaining over an A?? Its a very easy A class and you dont need to show up. She announces questions during class usually about lecture or readings and you answer on brightspace so if someone in class tells u what the question is, youre all good. And its like 2-4 multiple choice questions. I got an A but it curved to an A+
