She's really good! Didn't use the text book once over the semester - can just use her notes online.
She is an excellent teacher. She engages you and explains everything perfectly. Its a difficult class but as long as you study you can do just fine.
She's a wonderful teacher! She gives you the powerpoints online so you can print them out and bring them to class. Didn't use the book once. She covers a lot of material on her tests. Study for the tests and GO TO CLASS. The final exam is harder than her other tests.
By far the best teacher I've had at State so far.
She is probably one of the most easy-going professors I've had thus far. Very nice, very clear and very helpful. Never even opened my book. Some of what it is on the test isn't on the slides because she says it in the lecture. It makes it worth showing up to lecture. Love her!
Dr. Engell is the best professor I have had at state. Her tests are difficult but she really explains the material well and includes a lot of videos and visual aids in her class. I would definitely take her for BIO 181!
Definitely recommend Dr. Engell for 181! She gives tons of extra credit if you go to class and answers majority of the clicker questions correctly. Also tests are too difficult, they are only what she puts on the slides nothing from the book.
Best teacher so far. Incorporates material into real life examples and makes the class fun and interactive. Class is easy if you pay attention, take good notes, and review for the tests. She is easy to understand and the tests are not overwhelming.
shes awesome. good teacher, love the lectures. its fun
She was great teacher. I really enjoyed the class. Make sure to go to class the clicker points can make you or break you. Overall she was a great teacher and made the class interesting.
Great teacher!! She was very clear and the lectures were very interesting. Her tests were hard, but she gives you a study guide and if you study you will be fine. I would definitely recommend taking her class!
I loved Dr. Engell!!!! She was super enthusiastic, which made me really enjoy that class, despite the fact that it was way too early in the morning. TIPS: sit in the front, her energy/enthusiasm is catching. dont buy the book, you don't need it. DO THE STUDY GUIDES that's the difference between an A+ and a B- on a test
Engell is a fabulous Bio 181 teacher. Her class was DEFINITELY my favorite this semester. If you print out her online notes and take care to right down "interesting facts" you'll do GREAT on the tests. Also, do the study guides and the practice tests. She posts them on moodle for a reason!!
Very enthusiastic and personable! One of my favorite professors of this semester.
I have had Dr. Engell for three different classes so far. She is such a wonderful teacher. She is so clear and explains everything very well. If you go to class and listen, you will do very well in the class. I also love her enthusiasm about science.
She is a great teacher who has a lot of enthusiasm for teaching her subject. Her class was always fun and entertaining to go to. Get a grade for answering questions in class.
Dr. E really knows her stuff!! Difficult course, but learned alot. Hard to earn an A in this course.
She was very enthusiastic about the subject which made it fun, along with fun projects and videos of animals illustrating the concepts. Not hard to pass as long as you attend and pay attention
AWESOME TEACHER! very enthusiastic, makes lecture fun. clicker questions used for attendance and they actually make answering questions pretty fun. sit up front! great teacher, highly recommend the class.
Her Bio 410 is a difficult class, but you'll come out knowing a TON! And she gives you every opportunity to do well, posts tons of reviews prior to tests and is always available to answer questions (took it online). Great prof! But be prepared to study your butt off for tests.
She is a very helpful professor that really knows her stuff. Her lectures are fun and filled with clicker questions. She provides many opportunities for you to do well. Her tests can be difficult and her quizzes a little bit tricky but if you studies and use the review material you will do well
Dr. Engell is one of the best professors in the entire Biology department at NCSU. Her lectures were very engaging, and she did a good job of keeping you focused and entertained. Class wasn't too difficult, but I learned a lot of material and looked forward to each lecture. If you have the option, definitely take one of her classes.
She made lectures really interesting and fun. Only problem is her tests are really tricky- almost a little unfair. I got an A in the class but it was only because I study A LOT- at least 10+ hours per test. Her tests are full of tiny facts that were briefly mentioned in class so you really need to take good notes. Other than that she was awesome!
She is a wonderful person and extremely energetic and passionate about biology, but her tests are full of trick questions and are not fair at all. If I could go back I would've taken someone else. This is a subject I once loved, but this class has been so frustrating that I want nothing more to do with biology. Put tons of work in with no reward.
Dr. Engell is a pretty great professor. She is very engaging in lecture. Extremely approachable outside of class. Clicker questions in class with potential for some EC. Some online assignments can be tough, but never long. Tests have EC on them and are fair. The final is tough, though, and ridiculously long. Still would recommend her for 181!
Dr. Engell is an amazing professor who makes class enjoyable to go to! She uses fun questions to answer in class and interesting demonstrations. However, her test are not easy and very detailed so you will have to study a lot. Oh and not to mention she looks just like Leslie Mann!
I love Dr. Engell. By far the best professor I have ever had. Her lectures are interesting, she's an excellent teacher, and as long as you pay attention, her tests are almost too easy. Extra credit almost every day. I can't wait to take her Human Animal class next semester!
Such a great professor. Even though there is a lot of information, she manages to make every presentation super interesting and is clearly passionate about what she is teaching. Her tests have very small details on about examples she gives, but other than that they really aren't too bad!
Dr. Engell is AMAZING she obviously shows an interest in your well being and wants you to do well. Her tests are a little difficult because they are so specific to what we talk about in class. Other than that her lectures are incredibly engaging and she explains everything in great detail with examples that students can relate to.
I really liked Dr. Engell as a person, but I really struggled with her teaching style. It is a LOT of information, and it's presented to you and you memorize it or you're not going to do well on the tests. She's clearly very intelligent and passionate about what she's teaching, but if you struggle with memorizing information.. prepare yourself.
Dr. Engell is a great professor. She is a dymanic speaker and her lectures were extremely enjoyable to attend (given the material). Her tests are usually very fair and indicative of what was taught in lecture. Occasionally, the tests will ask a SUPER specific question about some minutia she mentioned in passing in the lecture, so pay attention!
Best teacher I have had so far in college. She loves what she does and she always makes class interesting. Her tests are tough so you have to know the material, but she'll make you want to learn. She puts all PowerPoints online but will include additional specific examples and case studies in class (which often show up on tests). OPTIONAL FINAL!
She changed my view of biology
If you are looking for an easy A in a 100 level bio class do not take her. Her tests are very difficult, besides the final which I found to be easier than all 3 combined.
Dr. E is an amazing person and professor. She makes the course interesting and is pretty funny. Don't expect an easy A as she is detail oriented. Her tests are on the longer side and if you pay attention in class and follow her guide you'll be fine. The in-class questions are easy points and I found the assignments and readings worth while.
I have taken Dr. Engell's Animal Behavior and Human-Animal classes and she is the definition of a great professor. Her lectures are clear and fun to keep up with. She is a very fair grader and doesn't assign anything that she doesn't think you will directly benefit from. Super receptive to meetings and has helped me a lot through college. TAKE HER!
I was not a fan of Dr. Engell's class. As a person, she was great; however, her tests were honestly ridiculous and unfair. In order to do well on the tests, one would actually have to memorize and be able to recall every tiny, winy bit of information gone over during lecture/notes/lab. I do not recommend her class at all.
Dr. Engell was a good professor, but the class was more difficult than it needed to be. I already took this class as an AP credit in high school but decided to take it again. She tests you on very specific topics that she vaguely mentions in class, so make sure you pay close attention. The tests were lengthy and difficult and online.
I dropped Bio 181 the previous semester because of the professor, and I am so glad I did because this time around I got Dr. Engell! She goes very fast during lectures, but she posts the slides online. Her tests are a mix of multiple choice, matching, and short answer questions. If you study a reasonable amount, you'll be fine.
Dr Engell is a great professor. She is very enthusiastic about biology! I will say that the tests are specific and it is important that you actually know the material. If you want to do well in this class you will have to study and go to class . The book wasn't of use to me. Review her power points, articles and videos that she posts!
Dr. Engell is one of the best professors I have ever had! She delivers the material in a great way. I will say her class was very difficult but it was also super interesting! Go to her office hours and she will do her best to help you out! Not only a great teacher but a great person as well.
I absolutely adore Dr. Engell and how willing she is to help her students do well in her class. She is very accessible and accommodating. Course material can be difficult but I never felt like what was being asked of me was unfair. I have taken classes with her several times and would continue to do so if I could.
Very nice and open to questions, but sometimes it felt rushed. You definitely need to study for tests, but even if you don't do great on them, it won't hurt your grade too bad. One group project which was kind of tricky in terms of communication in such a big class but not difficult.
Dr. Engell is a great professor and the lectures were fun and interesting with hilarious examples. It was easy to ask questions and have a discussion during the lecture, but there is a lot of information so be sure to study the PowerPoints before the tests. Also, the final exam is optional.
She is a good teacher and a sweet woman but she does grade hard and you can study for her tests and still only get a b. Her tests were hard but I enjoyed learning her class
Worst bio professor Ive had. Moved to fast during lectures and tests on specific pieces of information rather than the application of concepts. I do not recommend her
Sweetest professor i've ever had! She knows so much and loves to joke around. Shes incredibly knowledgeable and cares for her students. Her lectures are fast but as long as you can follow along, she posts the slides on her moodle. Highly recommend :)
Bio 181 with Engell is a difficult class. Her tests are extremely hard, but she does have a lot of other assignments that can help make it up. She is passionate about biology and loves to have fun, but she goes through notes very fast and I found myself behind in taking notes almost every class.
I truly enjoyed her Bio 440 class. There weren't man assignments or Hw just two papers throughout the semester (one she grades very tough but fair) and the other is pretty much opinion based so its a freebee and top hat questions based on interesting reads so it wasn't a chore to go to class, i looked forward to it and she enjoys teaching it.
If you are not good or not interested in biology you will not enjoy this class and it will be very hard. There is just a lot of material thrown at you and if you don't have some sort of background in biology you will struggle. Also, the tests are very hard even if you study a lot... pay attention in class and get help when you need.
The test are super duper specific. Go to lecture for the Tophat points and because what she teaches in class is closest to what is on the tests. Don't slack off in lab because it make up a large portion of your total grade in points. Dr. Engell is really knowledgable but this class is challenging don't underestimate the workload. Be ready to study!
Good bio course. Boring bc lecture heavy, but the professor was really passionate about what she was teaching. She was really sweet and liked to keep the energy up as best as she could. TopHat questions were tricky bc of touchy wifi. Light homework, longer tests. Keep up with studying and you will be fine.
Dr. Engel is a fabulous bio teacher! She reignited my love for biology. You will have to study frequently and pay VERY close attention in class to do well on tests, but regardless, I highly recommend taking her class. She's so passionate about the subject and has very informative powerpoints and supplemental links, articles, and websites.
Dr. Engell is the best! Her enthusiasm for the class makes you want to learn and actually retain the information. It's not super super easy, but it isn't too hard to make good grades in the class. She will definitely take care of you and help you get the grade you deserve. Highly recommend her for anyone!
Dr. Engell is really a nice lady with good intentions but unfortunately, she's terrible at correlating lectures to tests. Rather than testing students on course material, she tests them on random tangents she goes on in class and pointless YouTube videos she posts online. The tests are the worst and if you know your stuff you still may not do well.
2 exams and a final; she drops the lowest of the 3. Got a low 70 and high 60 on the two, missed 2-3 classes and was rounded up to an A- so she definitely curved grades. Uses TopHat every class and its a large part of grade so attendance is required. Lots of material but she is organized and has good study guides. Didn't use the book but should've.
Really fun class, so dont screw yourself like I did by oversleeping and missing half the TopHat questions youll hemorrhage points that way. Likes to give a lot of trick questions in class, but you still get half credit if youre wrong. Definitely CTRL+F the PDF of Dr. Tatiana b/c the quizzes can be tricky even when youve done the reading.
Dr. Engell is an amazing lecturer. She is passionate about what she is talking about and tries to help her students to the best of her abilities. Make sure you know the study guides extremely well because she does go in depth on those topics. Make sure you go to class because TopHat points can boost up your grade.
Dr. Engell has very interesting lectures which you must go to for attendance and participation points. Her tests are specific, but they are manageable if you go to class and study. She is a very sweet lady and cares a lot about what she does.
I really enjoyed Dr. Engell's class. She always brought enthusiasm and positivity to the classroom. She is very approachable and wants her students to succeed. While you do have to study, she does offer extra credit opportunities.
Honestly such an amazing professor! I loved every minute of her class. She is very engaging and obviously cares very much about what she does. She always made herself accessible. Her tests were completely reasonable. There wasn't that much homework. Overall, just really great!!
Dr. Engell is AMAZING! Her lectures were easy to understand and she is always smiling. She really cares for her students and wants them to understand the material. She isn't TOO test heavy as there are other factors into your grade. Homework wise she doesn't give a lot. She provides study guides and her tests are just information from the lecture.
Dr. Engell is definitely your best choice for BIO 181! She is super nice, always available for questions, and is very clear on her expectations of you. The tests are heavily based on the lectures, and you get a ton of opportunities to earn extra credit. If you take any other professor for BIO 181, you are hurting yourself rather than helping.
Dr Engell is an amazing professor. She makes lectures enjoyable and worth watching. She gives the tools to easily succeed, despite tough material. 10/10 recommend. Few assignments outside of class, but the few we had helped my understanding greatly. I was worried with it being asynch, but its my favorite course
Dr. Engell may be the greatest science professor I have ever had. She truly cares about her students, and all of her lectures are nothing but engaging. Her examples are often hilarious and very well tied in to one another. It was very obvious that she invested a large amount of time to make sure this class ran successfully, and I appreciated it all
She makes Biology interesting. You will have to memorize a good amount, but this is one of the best professors to take. I will say that it is easier to take online. At the end, there is some extra credit which is useful and there are buffer grades if you don't do too well on the tests. I got high Bs and a low A on the final and finished with an A.
If you're on the fence about taking her class, this is your sign! She's so caring, organized, and passionate. I'm so disappointed I wasn't able to be in her class in-person because of COVID. Quick response to emails, more than happy to sit with you 1 on 1 (via zoom in this case) to answer questions, interesting lectures + an organized online format
Loved her class! The only complaint I do have is that her grading criteria isn't very clear and I still don't really know what my grade is since everything is graded out of 900 points.
She cares very much about her students and it super understanding. Just make sure to rewatch the lectures before the test and youll be fine!
3 major tests throughout the semester and the final cumulative exam. Dr. Engell is very detailed and engaging in lectures. I found the tests to be somewhat difficult, they definitely require studying & memorization of terms.
Dr. Engell is an amazing professor for Bio-181. She explains every concept in detail and is very helpful. She drops the lowest test grade, which I am so happy for that because the first test was soooo difficult, but it did teach me to study more effectively. She provides extra credit opportunities on her tests, which helps your grade.
Decent professor and accessible outside of class but the exams are difficult and she will not curve grades even if students do not do as well. She does drop lowest grade but the tests are extremely specific and detailed. Sometimes she'll ask about the little things that you think dont matter but they do.
She is accessible outside of class and responds to emails promptly. She is very high energy which was helpful for an 8:30 class. Tests are difficult, she expects you to know every topic covered and be able to apply your knowledge, so do not cram for exams. Very enjoyable class!
Dr. Engell was really nice. My main complaint is I was quarantined right before a test and she would not let me take it since she drops one of the three tests you take. I wanted to take the test since I did not do as well as I wanted to for the first test. She offers an online option where you watch videos of her lectures if you can't make class.
Professor Engell was overall a solid professor to have. Her tests were pretty hard even with a lot of studying and there's no curve. Textbook is definitely not needed. Halfway through the semester I started to watch her lectures online instead of attending and my grades stayed the same so attendance is not necessary.
Dr. Engell was a real joy during lectures. She always tried to make lectures interesting, which made the material easier to remember. She also posted lectures online so attendance was not mandatory. Her exams are taken in DELTA and they had short answer questions, but they were extremely difficult. She also drops your lowest exam score.
Loved Dr. Engell. You don't have to go in person and can do the lectures on moodle, so if you sign up for the 8:30 its no problem. Tests are at Delta but I felt well prepared for them from the lectures. Super kind, funny, and explains things well.
Dr. Engell is super approachable and gives very good lectures. Her tests have no surprises and everything from lecture is used. Lecture is actually fun and she's super approachable.
Dr. Engell is incrediable! She seems really passionate about what she teaches and teaches in a way that's easy to grasp and relatable. She also posts the notes early and I found it helpful to pre write the notes and follow along in class.
She gives very good lectures and lays out the material she presents VERY WELL, however, most of the material is not useful on the tests. She is fairly lenient with extensions, but she will take A LOT of points off for minor extensions. She is very upbeat and an excellent professor who has amazing energy EVERY CLASS, which I really needed at 8:30am.
I loved Dr. Engell her lectures were amazing and easy to understand, I ended up taking this class at 8:30 in the morning and it still kept my focus. She is incredibly easy to reach outside of class and is super understanding of any personal issues you may have. There are three major tests and the final but she drops the lowest grade so it's not bad
Loved her class. She's very understanding, prepared, and energetic. My only critique is that her moodle page can be confusing. Be sure you scroll to find assignments. Don't rely on the dashboard. Read the extra resources for extra credit questions. The easiest core stem class I've taken.
Dr. Engell is super upbeat and approachable-- will reply to emails quickly and always happy to provide resources. There is a lot of content in this class but she presents everything in a very simple and even fun way. Test questions can be specific but there are no surprises. One of my favorite classes I've taken, and she might be my fav professor.
Dr. Engell is a wonderful professor for this introductory biology course. Your grade is made up of 3 exams (multiple choice with a few short answer questions) along with in-class participation points, mini quizzes, and some larger assignments. The lectures provide all the information needed to be successful and the lowest test grade is dropped.
Dr. Engell is the best professor I had this semester. Her lectures were so interesting, even at 8:30 in the morning. I highly recommend her for BIO 181. I feel like I gained so much from this class. It also teaches you great study skills due to the amount of information in this course. I love Dr. Engell!!!!!
For an intro biology class, she made it very fun and enjoyable even for an 8:30 section. She is very kind and understanding and is very enthusiastic about her teaching. The test was mostly multiple choice with few short answers with the lowest test grade dropped. Minimal studying is needed outside of class if you pay attention.
She's awesome.
Dr. Engell has been my favorite professor after 4 years at State! She is really enthusiastic about what she teaches, and makes class content fun and interesting. She is also incredibly compassionate and understanding towards her students and their mental healths.
Professor Engell is very understanding, kind, and informative! Her lectures have a lot of information and you end up taking lots of notes but it is very engaging and interesting. She's very energetic and passionate about her area of expertise. 3 tests, lowest grade is dropped and lots of opportunities to boost your grade in the class and lab.
The first exam was rough, but it's on you if you're not doing well- Dr. Engell is a great professor and gives plenty resources to learn what you need to know for tests. The tests can be extremely specific and you may need to know literally everything in your notes. Also she kinda piled on a tonnn of new info for the final which was annoying
Dr. Engells was good and her lectures were very interesting, but her tests are hard. Her in class assignments are not that hard and she doesn't give too many. With the tests make sure you really pay attention in class and watch all of the additional links in moodle.
Dr. Engell is one of the best professors l've had this semester. The first test was rough, but the other 2 felt easier. Lowest test grade is dropped and participation is a test grade. She really cares about her students and is easily accessible out of class. If you're taking Bio 181, take Engell!!
Engell was more than amazing. I had an 8:30 and she is very upbeat and lively but not in your face about it. There are 3 tests and a final but the lowest grade is dropped. Never really any hw but a few small assignments here and there. Everything she says in lecture even if it's not on the notes is fair game for the test
Attendance is taken during lectures using tophat. She was a good teacher the tests were just very hard and are taken at DELTA (SCHEDULE TEST APPTS EARLY). I recommend looking over the extra material for the topic as well at going over the study guide. She drops the lowest test score
Dr. Engell was so great as a biology professor, she explained everything so well and would always answer questions in a timely manner. she really valued class communication and making connections in class with peers if you ever need help. the tests were a bit hard but if you really put in the work to study you will make great grades.
Dr. Engell cares about her students so much! The mental health of all of her students is very important. Her class is fun and engaging and she is very passionate about what she is teaching. The worst test is dropped which is very nice and the exams require some studying but are pretty straight forward.
Dr. E was a great professor, do not get me wrong. But so many minor details of her lectures end up on the test so you have to listen so closely and carefully. She is also REALLY big on attendance.
Dr. Engell is really nice and knowledgeable. She grades quickly. There are some observation assignments where you have to go out and observe animals, but it is much more fun than sitting in a lab. The tests are not excessively hard and she drops your lowest test grade including the final.
Her tests are very detailed but she gives a lot of bonus questions.
I absolutely love this professor, she makes the lectures somewhat interesting and always plays silly videos that she thinks are so funny. It seems like she really enjoys teaching this subject so there is a lot of passion in her teaching lol I LOVE HER
Love her. Had her at a tense time on campus and she was the only professor I had that addressed it and altered the course to help us. Very easy to succeed in the class but need to take notes. Exams are completely reasonable.
Really fun class. I had a lot of fun doing her observational studies where I got to watch animals. She does go through lectures kind of fast, but she does post the slides. She explains things really well and answers questions with many examples. Her tests aren't too bad if you use the study guides she puts up. Overall a fair professor
Engell is fantastic! She makes class interesting, cares a lot about the subject, and gives us a lot of extra credit questions though tophat. There are three main tests, a few scattered readings and quizzes, and the final exam. A lot of the test questions are very specific, so that being said you will definitely have give yourself time to study.
She explained the material well and I don't really have any complaints other than some of the course didn't really make sense why we were learning things that had nothing to do with each other but that's the course's fault not hers. She was also nice because she let us drop our lowest test grade which was really helpful.
Dr. Engell is great! The first test is tough, but it gets much better and you get a dropped test. Not many assignments, but when they are they are relatively simple and weighted to help balance test scores. You do need to study a lot as there is a lot of material, but she is great!
100% recommend Dr. Engell. If you want to be successful go to every lecture she drops a test so you have a lot of leeway. Test tend to be a mixture of conceptual topics and memorization overall is a really good class if you dedicate some time to studying and doing every assignment.
If you pay attention and actually do the work, this class will not be hard for you. Pay attention to the TopHat questions, as they may show up on exams! Dr. Engell cares about the well-being of her students. She is very organized and her lectures are clear.
She is really nice and will drop your lowest test score. Her lectures are a little overwhelming if you take hand written notes. She talks extremely fast and will go through so many slides in one lecture. There were lots of assignments to help raise your grade. Would definitely recommend if you need a good grade in this class.
This class was very interesting, especially as someone who has no interest in science and took this as a gen ed. The textbook to me made the content more confusing, she talks really fast but has a recording of every class online, which is super helpful. She genuinely cares about her students.
She is AMAZING! Super fun lectures. Attendance is taken for a grade. All the test material was on the study guides. As long as you do the study guides fully you will do well on the tests.
Dr. Engell is a fantastic professor. She has high expectations for her students and her tests are tough but if you pay attention during class and take great notes you'll do just fine. She cares about her students and you can really feel that! Pay attention to small details during lectures they do come up on tests!
Dr. Engell was super cool, very enthusiastic about teaching, and very knowledgeable, and she was very accessible outside of class. Fully recommend, as long as you're cool with taking exams at Delta and not in class.
I liked Dr Engell although her tests were very specific. You really have to review the notes and material before taking a test. She took random attendance and you had to do Tophat questions in class, but she assigned homework maybe 4 times during the whole semester. Overall, she was great and I def recommend her!
Dr. Engell is a nice person and you can tell she's passionate about Biology. This being said I found the test to be relatively difficult. I went to her office hours and this didn't help. She was late and made it seem like a burden that I actually showed up to her office hours. I just think my learning style and her teaching style didn't line up.
I don't recommend taking a class with her class.
She is a super nice professor, very understanding of personal situations. I took summer 1 online and there were 2 tests and 1 optional final. Tests are at DELTA and you have to study EVERYTHING, the questions are obscure and super specific so I made a C and a B. The class ain't too hard except for tests, and Dr. E is a great professor.
Dr. Engell is very passionate about teaching and a very nice person. It helped having so much enthusiasm at 8:30 am. She made something I never thought I would like actually interesting. The exams are mostly straightforward with weird things here and there. Expect to do a lot of studying as there is a lot of material on each exam.
Dr. Engell is a very good professor who is passionate about her jobs and cares about her students. She is very understanding if you are having difficulties with assignments and she responds to emails almost instantly. She keeps the class engaged during her lecture as she is very positive and uplifting.
She is such a great professor. Her lectures are engaging and the material isn't too bad as long as you keep up with everything and study consistently. There aren't too many assignments either so the workload is definitely manageable.
Loved Dr. Engell! Her lectures do move fast, so taking notes using slides prior to each class is helpful. She is very engaging and enthusiastic, which makes lectures interesting. You have to really know the content for exams, but through studying it is possible. She lets you drop your lowest test grade which is super helpful.
Great professor! Tests are VERY detailed. recommend rewatching the lectures and/or find a study group to quiz each other
She is a good professor! Lectures were kind of fast, but they are recorded. Attendance is mostly mandatory due to tophat/lecture questions that help prepare for exams. Very few assignments/homework throughout the semester. Exams were very detailed, but studying overtime helps to pass them.
Great prof. She only has 10 ish assignments throughout the semester. Tests are pretty specific and sometimes have details she only mentioned once in class, but totally doable if you take good notes and study. She often goes pretty fast, but drops your lowest test grade and makes the content actually seem interesting. Flashcards = your best friend
Dr. Engell was a FABULOUS professor. You will learn A LOT from her. However, she runs her class by: Take tests at Delta (good/bad based on you) She grades on a point-based scale, which doesn't allow you to see your grade until the end of the semester. Attendance is mandatory --> She bases her tests around her slides, so quizlets IMO were useless
dr. engell is a fine teacher, she has a passion for what she does. the exams are in an interesting format, but they aren't hard as long as you study. there's lots of info but most of it is pretty easy as long as you pay attention. it was VERY hard to keep focused in her class as it was fairly boring, but to mainly no fault of hers.
Dr. Engell is definitely very enthusiastic about teaching this class. Helped my 8:30 be a little better. A lot of stuff to memorize, especially near the middle of the semester. Three quizzes and a final but pay attention to everything posted on moodle and things discussed in class because they will show up on the exams.
Dr. Engell is a passionate and knowledgeable professor. While the tests can be challenging, her engaging lectures and accessible office hours make the class manageable. Unstuck study is a great study tool alongside the class materials.
Great teacher and a great class, but warning the tests are difficult so make sure you are prepared for them.
Dr. Engell was a good teacher and very helpful during tutoring. The tests are pretty hard but only because the material covered is specific and there is a lot of it. You have to come to every class, and she uses TopHat to make sure you're there and participating. Which these answers are then incorporated into your grade. Overall, a good class.
Dr. Engell was so great! She made the 8:30 worth it. Although the tests can be very specific, it's manageable with flash cards or serious study buddies. She is able to explain the material with memorable references and overall makes the lecture enjoyable. Fight through waking up, come in with a good attitude, and the lecture will be bearable.
Engaging and fun class! Dr. Engell is incredibly enthusiastic about biology. She often gives extra information that's worth tuning into. Homework assignments or videos may appear on tests, so when you study, make sure you're thorough. Also, I recommend sitting near people who participate and collaborate for TopHat questions. I loved the semester!
Her lectures were engaging, but the tests were hard. You had to study hard, especially vocabulary, but if you did the tests weren't that bad. She uses tophat questions for attendance, and was always willing to help her students.
the lab group project actually almost killed my grade. Also do not pick the 8:30 section. EVER.
Professor Engell was great! Her lectures were engaging, and she was always excited to teach, but she sometimes went pretty fast, so I'd recommend re-watching her videos after class. Attendance (via Tophat) was strict, but otherwise, the test content was predictable, and her lectures were reliable and easy to take notes on.
Dr. Engell is amazing!! The tests are difficult, but if you use all of the study materials then you're set. The lectures are always interesting and she is very passionate about the subject. Projects are also fun!
Tests were way too difficult and specific to her lectures. Do not take this class for an elective if you think it is going to be fun to learn. She is very passionate about what she teaches and it can seem interesting but if you don't live for studying animals the exams will screw you over. She wants you to remember every word from the lecture.
GO TO CLASS. Attendance/participation is 1/9 of total grade. I found difficulty with tests, but I also skipped class a lot. I find the recorded lectures more helpful than the in-person ones, but attendance is graded from TopHat questions. Dr. Engell is great, just take her class seriously, don't miss deadlines, and don't skip class.
She was a very passionate teacher about bio and went in-depth about all the material. Attend the lecture and make sure you can apply the material and not just remember it. The lab was a crazy amount of the grade. A lot of lectures.
Loved Dr. Engell! Very passionate and really nice person. Class content was fun to learn, but her tests are very specific and can be hard. Make sure to take notes on what she says in class and other examples. There were 4 observation assignments that weren't too bad and there were also Dr. Tatiana quizzes. Uses TopHat for attendance, easy points.
She goes so fast I recommend writing your notes beforehand or just watch her posted videos. This class did really have me stressing tbh, i got a 93 on the first exam 98, 69, and a 73 on final. She drops your lowest test grade, but TRUST me leave the dropped grade for the last test it was hard. Make sure you try in lab its worth 1/3 of grade.
Great professor. Her lectures were super engaging, and you should take her if possible. As someone who struggles with waking up early, I think it's honestly worth taking the 8:30 with her over some of the other bio professors at state.
The exams are VERY specific. I recommend watching the recorded lectures and writing down everything she says in the videos. After, make a Quizlet from everything you wrote down from the lecture videos- even the small details you think are insignificant, because those will be on the test!
