he teaches very fast, it is very difficult to keep up with him, but i learned a lot from this class. make sure to keep up with homework and it will help a lot.
he is a very smart person but one of those types who is too smart to go down to your level. he is very picky on your answers (e.g. he dropped me points because my sin curve was not curvy enough on the top). confusing in some of his teachings.

THIS CLASS SHOULD NOT BE CALLED PRE-CALC! IT SHOULD BE 'WATCH HUBBARD PRACTICE HIS MATH SKILLS.' The guy goes too fast and doesn't really explain anything, although he is a nice guy. He is too smart to teach math, he should be a philosopher or sumthin.
He needs to check which class he is teaching... Not philosophy. This guy spends way to much time talking about pointless things that don't even relate to MATH
i had him for calc as a freshman, very smart...worked too fast for an 8 a.m. class...the coolest prof i've had when it comes to just b.s.'ing in his office...loves skydiving, uses this in examples, has a certain ben and jerry's feel about him
You will be tested. He has solutions that I've never seen before! Very bright person, very dedicated professor. Class will be fun if you keep up on your homework. Very understanding person that wants to see you succeed.
always willing to help students
One of my favorite teachers so far at SCSU. I thought he made pre-cal fun and easy as long as you kept up on your work.
Nice guy, but way too smart for this course. Not too hard on grading, but lots of pop quizzes, so keep up on your homework!
There are lots of pop quizzes in this class, so stay up to date with your homework. He teaches the material very well and is always willing to help students. One of my favorite math profs by far.
helpful professor. lectures are pretty clear. You need to stay caught up. You need to stay caught up. You need to stay caught up. Pop quiz points add up. do the homework.
Hubbard is the best math prof I've had at SCSU! He is more than willing to give extra help, whether you are a current student of his or not. He relates the material to students very well, but gives quizzes often. They help though so be prepared.

nice guy
very nice guy but it was difficult to take-in all of the material because he moved so fast and always had pop quizzes before you had a chance to get extra help. stay caught up with your homework and ask your questions!
This is a 5 credit class, so it's a fast paced coarse making math even more difficult. Dr. Hubbard did a great job and was always willing to help. I would deffinately take a class taught by him again. Come to class, study, keep your appointments, etc.
Very un-helpful, after making an appointment to meet and take a test, this proffessor was not there. The next day I received an e-mail from him saying he'll be late, but seeing as not all students have computers in their rooms it is hard to rely on that form of communication.
he is always willing to help you during his office hours and is always available. has a lot of quizes, if you stay on top of your homework and unerstand it you will do fine. tests are not bad at all as long as you understand the material. he is easy to understand. i liked his teaching style.
Hardest class i have ever taken, but he is a very helpful teacher. Take notes and don't skip class or you will be extremely lost. I had as many appointments with him as there were class periods and he was happy to help everytime. Take Hubbard for sure.
Hubbard is one of the best teachers I have had! The class definitely is hard, so don't ditch class because you will fall behind in class and lose pop quiz points. But he is willing to help you whenever you need it. Very helpfull and an awesome teacher!!!!!! RECOMMEND
For sure the hardest class i have ever taken. Hubbard is an awesome professor though, the most helpful professor that i have ever had. I had an appointment with him at least every other day and he was always happy to help. He never made me feel stupid. Oh, and if you fall behind you may as well just drop the class.
Dr. Hubbard is very helpful and will take any extra time to help you. His lectures are very helpful if you pay attention in class. I would highly recommend his class. He gives real life examples. He skydives, so he likes to live on the edge, which shows in his teaching. He is a very easy going guy. Highly recommened!!
The class sucks, but he does his best to help you out
This class is obviously gonna be hard and Hubbard makes it a lot easier. He is always there for help if you need it and his tests are fairly easy. Just go to class to get pop quiz points and to stay ahead in class. dont have much homework at all....just tests and quizzes. He is so helpful though and great at explaining. Recommended hands down!
He is one of the most helpful professors I have ever had! He really tries to make sure I understand everything. Take him for sure with this class. The tests are alright and there is always help for homework.
Math 196 is a b*&#%. Taken the class before, and this teacher makes you understand the content. Failed the class before now im getting an A, this guy actually cares about how you do in class and will confront you on it if he thinks you need help....wish all professors here were like that. Absolutley take him if you take math 196
I have no idea what these people are talking about. Yes he is helpful if you go to him during office hours. His lectures are hard to follow i was always still writing the beginning of a problem when he had moved on to the next. Take a different professor. He also has pointless calculator problems that you will never need to know anytime in yourli
196 sucks the way it is and hubbard only makes it worse. He feels the need to fly through all of the material, and make sure people actually understand. Even if you go to his office hours he still flies through everything. this was the worst class ever, I've never studied so much in my life and I still failed!
He was a helpful teacher. Yeah this class is hard but just stay with the work and getting a C wont be to hard. Take him if you have the chance.
worst teacher ever, moves way too fast through the material and doesn't give anyone a chance to comprehend what he just did. His tests are hard. He needs to retire
yea this guy is wayyyyyy to smart for his own good. for fun he gets together with math friends and estimates where pumpkins will mathimatically land when dropped out of a plane. he has no clue how to teach college level students, he moves so fast you dont even know what he says. go teach at MIT Miles...
One of the best math professors at SCSU. He is very helpful and approachable. Helped me get off to a good start in higher math courses. Moved fairly quickly, but if you keep up it isn't too bad. Highly recommended if going into caluculus courses.
helpful, but thinks everybody knows math. Goes way too fast. Do not take him if you just want at least a C in the calculus.
horrible professor...goes way way way too fast, expects you to know all of the material before you take the class, not helpful at all
He goes through the material WAY TOO FAST. its almost impossible to keep up. He thinks his students know all the material before they take the class. Tests are pretty hard too, unless you really konw what you are doing. Offers help in the tutor lab and during office hours, but he doesnt really teach anything, he just does example after example.
Pretty good professor all around. The class is difficult no matter who you have it with, but Miles keeps it as painless as possible. I got an A on the first test, but the class gets A LOT harder after the first test. Study, do the work, pay attention, and do your best on the tests. He is a generous grader!
He is dificult with partial credit. He is a nice guy, but he does move very fast. He tends to offer Supplimental Instruction and the "tutor lab" a lot but meeting with him one on one can be a waste unless you know exacly what you "don't" understand. He is less concerned about showing work, and more concerned about the final answer.
goes pretty fast but is ok
This class was a Bit*& no matter what way you look at it but I still pulled off an A with Alot of Effort. Through talking to others taking MAth 196, Hubbard is still probably the best prof to take it with. Pop quizzes but pretty easy to predict what day they are going to happen.
The best math professor hands down. Make sure you do the homework and show up for class and theres no way you can fail. Very helpful, just make sure you pay attention and you will be fine.
Offers a ton of extra help!!
he is the most hard teacher i ever had.. very very hard if u are ready to suffer than only take this class..
He is horrible. Tests are ridiculous, tons of homework. He goes way too fast and assumes that everyone knows math as good as he does.
He goes fast. If you are seeing the concepts for the first time, it could be confusing. However, it's rare to find a teacher so dedicated to helping students (in my limited experience). If you accept the help he offers, you should do well, according to hearsay. Apparently 196 is hard to pass regardless of the prof. Might as well have a good one.
Very Tough class. Very tough prof.
He isn't good, recommends going to 'supplemental instruction' all the time, because he can't teach us anything useful in class. Tests are really hard too. Lots and Lots of homework.
Besides the subject matter being difficult, he made it even harder by not teaching it well. Instead of explaining himself he would just randomly write examples and move on. If your good at math you'll be fine...if not good luck!
The material itself wouldn't be too bad, but his teaching manner is not the best way to get the information across. You can do very well on homework assignments, and still do bad on the tests. It's a really difficult class and you really have to stay caught up to do good at all.
Makes class harder than it actually is, this everybody knows math as well as he does. Is frustrating even when you go for help (especially if you're slow at math). Too much homework. I can't remember anything good about this professor. Be warned before you take his class.
not very helpful. hard hard hard
I think that he is a good professor. I thought that the class was kinda hard but as long and you do the work, pay attention and go to class, and get help if you need it you will do just fine. He knows his stuff and tries to make class fun by telling jokes.
Math sucks, period. but there has to be professors that are more willing to teach!
Miles is great math professor compared to others in the math department. He recomends supplmental instruction which he does attend. The material covered in class is done at a very high rate of speed.
is very helpuf but but not lenient at all. if you are on the edge between two grades he cannot take you to the higher grade. if you good in math you can take him but if not i recommend not
VERY BAD teacher. he just gave me F. very merciless even after hard work and struggle.pls do not take him at all.unless u r so so good in math. trust me that u will regret. VERY BAD TEACHER
Worst teacher i ever had
He was horrible. I am good at math and it was STILL really hard, he is very strict. He also goes very fast. However, he does attend supplemental learning times which are helpful.
I think Professor Hubbard was great! He did have a tendancy to go rather quickly through the material but if you go and see him, he is more than willing to help. This class is IMPOSSIBLE to pass if you don't attend class so make sure to go. Y
He goes over material very fast and its hard to follow along sometimes. He makes sure if you dont understand something he wants you to come see him in his office so he can clarify. Make sure you do homework every day so you get it, also if you dont do it every day their is no chance your going to pass
Dont listen to what everyone else wrote. I am majoring in math and because of him I know for sure. He does take attendance and he will know who you are within a couple of weeks. If you do bad on a test or quiz/ homework, and he thinks you need help, he'll come up to you or write it on your quiz, test, or homework to make a weekly appointment w/ him
Yuo have a lot of homework and a quiz once a week w/out warning. (10 pnts a quize, same for homework usually). On tests/quizes, he does give partial credit but not much. You can at least attempt a problem and if u started it wrong you got 0 points. No extra credit offered either, unless one time for 1 pnt if u answered test ? VERY thoroughly.
He is friendly and approachable, very willing to help you understand the material, he has a very positice persona, goes through material fast, supplental instruction not that helpful plus it's hard. 3 tests and a final, final is pretty easy. He uses math xl. I skipped the book homework and just studied the math xl problems/homework/quizes & got a B
You get to keep your tests, quizes and homework; he'll usually have those back to you by the next class. Grades also posted on D2L. It's hard to understand him teach you how to use a graphing calculator if you never used one before. Hubbard never cancels class, except one day he forgot about class and a couple other days he was out of state.
Very helpful. If you need extra help very willing to sit down and go over the material. very real will let you know if you are not doing very well but will work with you to improve your grade. Lots of math xl there is one due every other day so you have to be on top of that. Overall a good professor
I hate this professor! Don't take him. I was an A math student till I entered his class. He doesn't follow the book so your only reference is his sloppy notes! He also takes a large amount of points off for tiny mistakes, has many pop quizes, and his tests are super hard.
Very helpful out of the classroom. passed with a C after failing with Buls freshman year.
Textbook example of the perfect mentor.
he is hard grader. he love to use pen to mark answers. also plan on doing lot study for exams. also can put alot of time into studying and receive a grade that doesn't show it. also watch out for quiz they are hard and can cause blanks. but on the flip side he helps out alot when u go to his office when u have a ?
Excellent math professor. Is very willing to work with students. Will go out of his way to meet with you if you need help. Set up a study day an hour every week to work on homework and ask questions. Takes questions on homework, tests, etc at beginning of class. Tries to make it more fun. Grades quickly, almost always get work back the next class.
He tries to be helpful, and demands that you go to visit him, but then when you don't understand something you are made to be an idiot. The tutor was more help then he was. Never make any little mistakes on tests because he will mark off any point that he can until all that is left is his pen marks.
Very hard, very demanding. Teaches extremely fast and assumes a lot for a low level math class. Offers a ton of help but goes too far. Make one mistake and he wants you to make an appointment with him in his office. The email reminders that my online homework wasn't done at 11pm was a little weird too. If you understand math very well he's a teach
Dr. Hubbard is extremly helpful if you need help but he is the fastest professor i have ever had. it is an insanely fast paced class. if you want to take him expect to spend few hours after every class if you want to do well in the class. he is very hard, he gives a lot of quizes and gets lost sometimes explaining examples.Do not recommend at all.
The material in this course isn't too difficult. Although attendance is not mandatory, but in order to well, showing up to class may be helpful. He gives many pop quizzes. He is quite fair though when it comes to grading. He offers lots of help if you need it. He expects a lot out of students. You must do your assignment every night.
Math classes are hard unless you practice and learn the material. Easy to blame an instructor for your own laziness. I hated math coming into the class and never studied for math before. If you work hard you will do well. Miles is always willing to help. Go to class and the skills center then you will do fine in the class.
Calculus is challenging, no matter the instructor. Hubbard did a great job of teaching the class. He went through many examples in class and directed "lab" exercises which I found particularly helpful in learning the material. Online book work, keep working problems until you understand them. Barely enough time for tests, so study the reviews well.
I would never recommend taking Hubbard. This was the worst class I have EVER taken and he is only interested in a raise(i.e helping students out of class so he gets a good survey at the end of the term) although he is very helpful, it says something when several students fail on the material he teaches/tutors himself.
Calculus is already a hard class and Hubbard makes it even harder. He goes through examples way to fast for a 112 course and doesn't explain the material well. He is a very smart teacher and is willing to help, but it get a good grade in his courses you need A LOT of outside work with him and other tutors.
I took this class in the summer which kinda sucked because his class has a TON of material that you need to get really good at. He is a very good teacher though, more than willing to help in and after class. All tests are "show work" which is good because even if you get the wrong answer he still gives credit for what you did right.
Prof. Hubbard is very helpful if you ask him. He wants students to understand and he'll take the time if you make appointments outside of class. He does fast though and unless you're great at math you'll have to work for the grade. There were several times when he would just keep talking with little clarifications or time for questions.
I switched into a more challenging math course because I didn't think I would survive the one the University put me in. Prof. Hubbard was a very challenging teacher, because he taught in a way I had never been taught before. He explains how you get the answer instead of showing you how to do it, but he was always available for extra help.
I hate the assignments from d2l it's because you'll have to find the answers yourself. It's a really tough course. I really suggest that you should study from the text also. Helps you get by the lab homework quicker. Takes 1-4hours to finish the lab homework. Sometime the professor teaches different from the text. Read text before going to class.
Class is pretty hard but he offers lots of extra help. Just go spend an extra hour a week going to his officer hours or the extra class period and you'll be good.
He taught me nothing, his lectures were very unclear and he does not explain things well at all.
This class was very difficult. His lectures are pretty boring. He always gives out pop quizzes and they are generally one or two questions, so if you don't understand the topic, you are screwed. He gives confusing and hard assignments that don't really go along with the book. Even the tutors had trouble solving the problems. Take a different prof.
He will take off points and not tell you why. Worksheets are hard and very confusing. Pop quizzes every week. Homework is due almost every day during the week. He teaches out of two textbooks, the MyMathLab has the second one online. In addition he will lecture five minutes over most class days. My opinion: Run.
Hardest class I've ever taken. The tutors struggled to help most of the time. He does reach out to you more than any other professor to help. He wants to make appointments with students to help. Pop quizzes are hard, expect homework every night, and expect him to take points off for stupid reasons.
Hard class with a great teacher. He expects a lot from you so show up prepared by understanding your homework. If you stop doing homework, you'll fall behind without question. My class had 19 pop-quizes at the end of the semester. If you aren't a great student, find another prof. If you ARE a great student, take Hubbard, you'll learn a lot.
Super willing to help out and office hours are great. Gives a ton of pop quizzes but he usually drops hints on what they will be about, which helps. Also drops 2 of your lowest quiz scores. If you try, you will be fine. I would recommend him because he's so willing to help.
Horrible professor. The first time I went to his office hours he started off by telling me that I was hopeless and that I will be lucky to finish with a C in his class. It was only the third week in. He would single out people that did not have a grasp on the current concepts. The tutoring center had frequent trouble aiding in homework.
Prof. Hubbard is really helpful when it comes down to it, but only if you take the time to talk to him one on one outside of class. In class he teaches at an outrageously fast pace, with very few examples of how to do something or where we can apply the information. If you don't study, or get outside help, you probably will struggle immensely.
Hubbard is the best Math prof at scsu!! Lectures were challenging because he goes through the material quickly. ALWAYS read the chapter and do the homework BEFORE the lecture, and you will be fine. Goes out of his way to help students who struggle by making regular appointments with them for tutoring. Loves math and teaching. Be prepared to work!
First off, Dr. Hubbard goes EXTREMELY FAST. If you are not used to a heavy work load, get ready. He also gives quizzes without warning throughout the semester. However, he wants students to succeed and makes himself available at any hour of the day, and he's good at teaching what he teaches. I'd say he's easily the best math prof at SCSU.
Dr. Hubbard is brilliant when it comes to mathematics, but doesn't do to well in teaching. The class is incredibly fast pace, and he loves giving pop quizzes in the last 5 mins of class. I went in to see him for help and he flew by everything in under 5min, and felt I wasn't a priority. Don't take the class unless necessary.
Hubbard is one of the best professors there is! His class is lots of work but he is more than willing to help you. He does give extra credit as well! His exams are hard so make sure you do the review guides a week in advance.
I would absolutely take him again. He's extremely caring and willing to help. The class is hard, but there are plenty of opportunities for help. He does like giving pop quizzes at the end of class, so make sure you stay caught up in class.
Easy to understand prof! Very helpful.
