Millie is a very nice person, and she is very excited about math. That being said, she is possibly the WORST math teacher I have ever encountered. Don't even think about taking notes, because she constantly erases, re-writes and then leaves half-f
Millie is fantastic. I became a math major because of these courses.
Awesome mind!Just watching her teach gets me excitted abt math and teaching myself.Very high expectations for conceptual understanding of material on test but works very hard to help you understand it.if I could just figure out how to absorb her energy...
Millie Johnson is a nice person, but by far, the worst teacher I have ever had. She didn't teach in class periods, but would cover small parts of a couple of homework problems, or talk about her personal life. Good person, horrid professor.
Millie is very smart, but doesn't have the greatest teaching style. You better be a quick learner to take this class becuase it goes fast. She is pretty clear but the material is what makes it confusing.
Very nice and helpfull lady. I liked her alot as a person. Will take time the time to help you outside of class. However, I think she's one of the worst math teachers I've ever had.
Very excited about math and willing to help you if you come to her office. Her lectures were confusing, very hard to follow. Some irrelevent assignments and tests were hard. So many people teach this class, dont get into her section!
She's one of the harder teachers in the department, but unlike most of them, she genuinely cares about your grade and does everything she can to help you. And she's incredibly nice. By the end of the quarter, you WILL know your stuff.
She completely lacks objectivity. Her favorite students can get more points on an incorrect questions than other students got for getting it correct. She grades intermediate work so thoroughly that your final answer is meaningless. Expect to do poorly.
did not find her teaching style helpful. unsatisfied with her level of difficulty in comparison to her ability to teach.
cool teacher
Constantly picked on various members of the class, especially the ones who didn't do so well. Excited about the material, but incredibly scattered and hard to follow. Very open to helping outside of class, but didn't speak my language.
Millie is a very nice lady. However, she is an unbelievably terrible teacher. She is not at all like the other teachers in the math department. She doesn't even have a Ph.D. Don't waste your time taking a class from her. She doesn't teach classes over 200 level. Take classes from the old timers.
Professor Johnson was one of the best teachers I have ever had. 300 words could not do her justice; I won't try. I will say that Dr. Johnson's lectures were clear, motivated, and motivating. Her homework assignments and tests were rigorous, but fair. 300 words isn't enough.
I understood all of the concepts that Millie taught the only problem was applying them. Her lectures didn't flow and she was very disorganized which made it hard for her to teach the class how to apply our knowledge well. But she did really care about us and wanted everyone to do well.
I quickly found out that she does not like to help outside of class and in fact can be quite rude to students who try and get extra help. She is extremely disorganized and believes that students should teach themselves. She would not show up to appt times you set with her and limit office hours.
She is extremely disorganized and has horrible time management skills but she really cares about every one of her students. She loves math and is VERY excited about it. Her energy was too much for me at 8 AM but she's a really nice lady and always willing to help outside class. At first she was very annoying but now I like her.
If you actually want, or need to know the material, Millie is the ideal prof. She grades a little hard, but if you put in the time and know the material your grade will be alright. If you don't need, or want to know the material, don't take this class. Millie is a very sweet person, who cares about her student and feels they deserve to learn.
I think Millie is an awesome teacher - definitely the best I've ever had for math. She's hilarious and though she may be scatterbrained I do believe that she really knows what she's talking about.
Millie is always interested in challenging her students to think for themselves. If you want to learn how to understand math in a whole new way, Millie will be there to help you! She is extremely intelligent and is consistant in her expectations of herself and of her students. She is very kind!
Awesome teacher. I rearranged my schedule so that I could take her again next quarter.
class was hell. she's nutso---which wakes you up at 8am and is nice is that aspect. but the material.....was awful.
Millie was my advisor, and was incredibly mean to me. She told me I didn't like math for the right reasons and that I was poor at the subject---and I was her grader! She never signed things for me promptly and made me cry a few times. I'd swear about her if it were allowed. Be careful about what you say, Millie! Be nice!
Millie was a nightmare. She would make fun of people if they gave her the wrong answer then she would get angry and storm out if we didn't offer her another answer. I learned nothing from her class and was miserable the entire time. Over half the class ended up dropping it. Stay away from this prof.
Craaaazy woman. Kinda lovable. Hard class, but teaches math conceptually -- you'll learn alot and leave with a much better understanding of "why's" rather than "how's." If you try, that is. There's definitely some trying involved. Need to pay attention in lectures!
Not easy, but if you want to UNDERSTAND math and not just plug in numbers, take her course. Amazing teacher, not a free ride, but you'll leave with so much more than you came in with. She is crazy, in the best possible way.
Completely disorganized in class. Would waste so much time going over problems she rarely got to the lecture. Grading style is bizarre - will give 50% for a correct answer if she doesn't like the justification. She wants you to get into her thinking style, but she's just not insightful enough to be worth the headache. Easy class, just not worth it.
Hilarious
Millie was fun to listen to, and nice, but I would never suggest taking a class from her. She never got through her planned lectures and the tests were much different from the homework problems. Daily homework assignments were difficult to earn full credit on, and her teaching style was based on her way of thinking which is very abstract.
lots of homework!!!
A concept teacher, you need to LEARN the material to pass the class. Tough grader, but she curves your grade in the end based on how she thinks you've improved. lots of homework, but only counts if it helps your grade. She's crazy and awesome, and loves math. don't take her class if you're a "monkey pushing buttons" and just want to plug #s.
Her lectures go fast! She will NOT just give you a formula, she makes you understand the formulas structure. EXTREMELY helpful during office hours. If students are not engaged, she completely loses interest in teaching that day, so stay focused & pay attention 100% of the time. Offer your answer when everyone else has that "deer-in-headlights" look
Great help in class. She makes sure that you are paying attention by randomly asking people to answer questions. Crystal clear lectures and explanation.
I found Millie to be incredibly rude and annoying. If she randomly calls on you and you are not prepared, prepare to be humiliated (and she WILL randomly call on you). Other than that, exams are fair and she will tell you what to expect on them. Lots of homework, but that should be expected. Also posts hw solutions in the library, which is helpful.
Don't let the 100 level of the course fool you. The course is extremely difficult even if you have taken Calculus in the past. She is crazy, in a good way and her passion for math is shown through lecture. This class was a hate/love relationship.
Millie was fun. She really wants her students to understand why they are doing things. She is not a "plug numbers into the equation and get an answer" teacher. If you want to do well in her course, you must put in the time to understand the concepts. She gives 2 part tests, in class for 30 points and take home for 10. I look forward to 204 with her
Very, very hard!
She was a great prof., managed to explain the concepts of the material. She respects students who respect her and posts guides in the library for the homework. A good professor if you want to actually learn something in class. My only complaint would be that she can talk fast sometimes during lecture
Those who don't like her are the ones getting their butts kicked. If you need help, go to her office hour. You'll do amazing if you just ask for help.
scatter brained, does not stay on the same subject long enough to teach. Teaches thigns you DONT need to know, and does not spend enough time on the things you need to know.
I'm surprised Millie gets such low ratings -- her classes are demanding, but she's very in tune with the concepts and illustrates her points well. Her enthusiasm is helpful. Homework is optional, and the exams are not overly difficult. Students used to memorizing methods will struggle, students who are best are conceptual learning will thrive.
Millie is a very nice and funny person. She is very corky and awakening for an 8am math class. She is pretty easy to follow and the homework was purely optional. Her office hours are definitely crazy though since many people need her help. She was very good about posting resources for us to use on Blackboard.
Millie is a great teacher, her methods however are a tad bit odd, but she makes sure you understand what you are doing and WHY you are doing it, not just teaching you how to do it, if anyone has a chance to take her I would suggest it, and if you put any effort into learning, shell teach up a storm.
This was one of my favorite classes, and I am definitely NOT a math person. Millie is extremely energetic, and while quirky, she knows her stuff. She teaches the "Big Idea" rather than just handing you equations, which can be a bit hard, but she's always in her office, so go if you need help. Take her class if at all possible; she's amazing.
Millie Johnson is an amazing teacher. I hated calculus in high school, but it became my favorite subject this quarter. She goes very deep into the subject so you actually understand what you're doing. Highly recommended.
Millie is the best. She actually cares about her students and will do whatever to help as long as you are willing to learn. And she is halarious, I loved going to class.
Millie is awesome, she makes class feel like family. It was super difficult for me, but she provided all necessary resources for us to succeed. She is perpetually bubbly and happy and PASSIONATE about math and life, even if I fail she'll be a good friend for later. Also made great friends in bonding over the hard work. All in all- totally worth it.
Millie is an absolutely amazing teacher! She sets great expectations for her students and really pushes all of them to do their best. Her class involves a lot of work, but all of it is totally worth it! Sometimes she can be a bit spacey and sporadic, but she definitely wants to help everyone learn and she brings a great passion to the subject.
Great prof, she loves math and will work so hard to make sure you understand everything. Take her if at all possible! Homework is optional, tests are conceptual and way easier if you do the homework. Be prepared to think if you take her class though.
Lectures were disjointed and boring. Test questions were unclear. She also grades on how your write answers, like this is an English class. Don't show up late to class or she will ridicule you.
She's a nice person, but her class was very difficult. But then I really only had a passing interest in the subject matter (didn't need it for my major).
I loved this class! Millie is an awesome professor and is especially great if you're a visual learner. She loves pictures! Difficult subject matter but a class I looked forward to everyday.
Awesome class. She'll go above and beyond to help you with anything you have difficulty with. If you put the time into it you'll do great.
Go to class, ask questions, do your hw (though it is optional), and go to Millie's office hours. Then you will get an A even though the class is difficult. You have to understand the material which means the class goes from hard to easy as you grasp all the concepts. Take her class if you plan on majoring in math or just want to learn more!
Sometimes it was difficult to grasp the concepts but she was extremely helpful. I appreciate that she was supportive instead of demeaning like some professors can be when you aren't getting something. Though I'm not coming out with the grade I hoped for, that's ok because it was a really great experience, I learned a LOT, and made some friends.
Professor Johnson is a great match for students that share her hypernormal obsession with visualization and pedantic detail. A word of caution: if you take Professor Johnson's 304 class after taking 204 from another professor, she will expect you to coordinatize your answers relative to her world; one with an extremely limited basis.
LOVED THIS CLASS!!! don't go in expecting the type of learning you are used to. it is difficult but you will become a much better student, not only in math but other areas as well. You learn to think about what you are doing and why. "Those who know what to do and how to do it will always be working for those who know why they're doing it"
Millie has such a desire for her students to truly understand concepts. She is ALWAYS available for afterhours help, so if you take her class take advantage of this. Be aware that homework is due and graded everyday, but homework grade can only help you on class. She is not a generous grader, so your GPA may struggle. But she's so sweet :)
Millie is enthusiastic and caring. I had Millie 4 quarters in a row (135,224,204,304). Every quarter she manages to instill a deep visual understanding of what is going on and why. Her lectures are literally inspiring. Beware, she is not an easy prof. But she is the Best prof, and btw I was raised by a 4.0 math grad from Cal Tech.
Millie is a wonderful person.. and I really wanted to like her the two quarters I had her, but she was not good at making the material very clear. I was always asking her to explain it in a different way and she couldn't. Find a friend in this class she lets you work together on take home tests :)
Millie is a very difficult professor. She is very good though, you learn a lot! She teaches you what the material means as opposed to teaching you just how to plug numbers into equations. You have to work hard or take a hit to the GPA, but the learning experience is worth. She is a great teacher and is very friendly, cares about all her students.
Millie is incredible! I had her last quarter and will have her again for 135 this upcoming quarter, and I absolutely loved her class. She doesn't just throw information at you; she teaches you WHY certain things do what they do so that you ACTUALLY understand math. I'm tempted to minor in Mathematics JUST to take her upper-level courses.
Millie is amazing!!! I was inspired by how much she loves her job, loves the material that she teaches, and trluy cares about all of her students. Yes, 134 is difficult, but it's do-able if you want to put in the time. So, if you have the chance to take Mille, DO IT!!! I promise you won't regret it!!!
Millie is amazing!!! I was truly inspired by how much she loves her job, the subject she teaches, and her students. Yes, it is a difficult course but it's worth it if you are willing to put in the time. If you have this chance to take Millie, DO IT!!! I promise you won't regret it!!!
brutal exams (3 hours or more per exam) plus take home exams. bad testing environment, which allowed cheating. sloppy lectures, hard to read what she writes, and she doesn't state things clearly. uses class time as personal time, ie talking to the class about a fellow students drawing her prius. also gave about 2 minutes for teacher evals. dontdoit
Oh, Millie. I love her attitude and enthusiasm, but sometimes hated the class. The take homes will kill you, no matter how much time you spend on them she'll find something wrong. She's a stickler for details, but fair over all. It was a tough class but I miss it now that I have a regular boring teacher (who doesn't make us brownies).
Millie is so sweet, and extremely enthusiastic. But if you don't have the luxury of making her class your priority, this class will not go well. DO NOT TAKE HER SPRING QUARTER. Take home tests are crazy, as well as the inclass tests. Make sure you have a good chuck of time free after her class to stay for the tests and office hours.
Millie is an excellent professor and a wonderful person. Yes, this class is difficult. Yes, you will have to work hard. But I came out with such an in-depth understanding of calculus. There is nightly homework, but it is optional. The tests are long, but she gives lots of extra time and the class average is usually a B. Would DEFINITELY recommend.
If you want to really understand the principles behind mathematics, Millie is your girl. She doesn't want you to be a mindless robot who pushes buttons on the calculator without knowing why. Lectures fly by because Millie spends the time showing you what seems like mathematical magic tricks, and it'll make you excited about math over and over again
Millie is great for really understanding visually and conceptually the principles of calculus, but she is very condescending towards her students, as an honors student she made me feel stupid. she also discredits other math profs. Her grading is not consistent and her test feedback is impossible to read as she marks up EVERYTHING.
I've taken 4 of Millie's classes now. The more I got to know her, the more motivated I became to challenge myself and really focus on her class material. Millie calls forth her students' intuition and builds deep connections not only between aspects of the material, but between student and teacher as well. Best professor I've ever had
Millie is one of my favorite professors at Western but I wouldn't jump at taking her class again. She's easily distracted, but when the class is focused I learned a lot. Office hours is incredibly useful (but also popular, expect to wait!). She's a wonderful mentor, but a little scattered of a professor. Beware of written tests.
Two of the very best teachers I've ever had were at WWU (both math dept.). Millie was one of these. Took her for math 204304 years ago (1998-1999 ish), and they were absolutely amazing classes! She has wonderful passion for mathteaching and is very skilled. She really inspired me and my complete love for math. I even named my daughter after her!
Its a tough class, but she cares about her students and loves what she teaches.
Are you interested in understanding the mathematical process? Are you willing to work hard and challenge yourself? If not don't take Millie, I took 134/135/224/204/304 from Millie and loved them all, I got a B in 134 but managed A's in all classes after that. If you put the work in you will be richly rewarded. She is by far the best teacher ever.
she is the best math teacher I've ever had!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Very nice, genuine and funny, approachable. Tests are more focused on what she says in class than the homework, so attendance is essential, but she's very accommodating if you have to miss class or exam and you email beforehand. If you're going further in math, she will help you with advising and CRN-override you into any class you need.
After taking Millie for two quarters, I finally appreciate math. Her classes are tough, but you'll definitely leave with a strong understanding of the material, granted you worked hard for it. She lets you drop one quiz, and homework only counts if it helps your grade. Tests are ridiculous, I recommend an hour before and after so you have time.
Millie is one of the best professors I've ever had. I'd already taken AP calc in high school, so I was a bit annoyed about having to take it again at Western, but I still was able to learn so much from her class. You really leave with an incredible understanding of the topic. I changed my major to math because of her class.
Millie is one of the worst math professors I have ever had. She made me hate math. Very unorganized and bad at lecturing. Won't answer questions and her tests are completely different from the homework. She is rude and doesn't give enough time. If you want a good grade I recommend a different teacher.
THE BEST PROFESSOR EVER. Her classes are difficult but only because she goes into so much more depth than anybody else. You walk away with just an incredible understanding of the subject. She does give really intense tests, but she's also very free with extra credit; I never got less than a B. I've taken every class with her that I can.
Incredible at teaching the concepts of the classes she teaches. Most generous grading policy I've ever seen always gives you motivation to master the things you did poorly on before. That being said, her classes are without a doubt the hardest of any section, but it isn't a bad kind of hard, and you'll come out much stronger because of it.
Millie is the best teacher I have ever had. She cares about her students and real education. She expects a lot, so her classes are difficult, but it's worth it.
