very challenging
This guy is okay, not hard not easy. You gotta do alot of out of class work to catch up on whats going on. He gives you a pre test before all exams and most of the time at least 4-5 questions are the same. DO HOMEWORK, that helps so much. He can be a dick so don't be late to class and don't piss him off. I got a C. no harm no foul.

Challenging class but not too hard. Must do a lot of work outside of the classroom to figure things out because he dosen't go over a lot of the problems in class-maily does powerpoint with one day for problems. Practice tests are great! I got and A-with hard work. He can be frustrating at times just don't be late and go see him during office hours.
A lot of kids stopped coming to this class after the first test. I kept going, but I don't think it mattered. A lot of independent work, but the material isn't hard. He gives 20 pts. extra credit on each test for completing Mastering Physics. Take him if you have to choose between him and Tony.
You will not learn anything in this class. However, he has a very easy grading system. Don't go to class because he makes no sense. He makes it painful.
This professor is useless. His european accent is practically incomprehensible and overall he's not a very good teacher. He is very knowlegable but he is kind of a jerk because I had a FUNERAL to attend on the day of a test but he still would even consider giving me a retake.
I'm only two tests into the semester with this guy but I like him so far. Actually TEACHES what's in the book instead of having you freeball it like most profs. If you take good notes in class you'll barely need to study. Gives pre-tests the day before the real one. Pretty funny guy too. Real low key sense of humor that goes over most peoples heads
Pretty laid back guy. Gives practice tests the day before the real ones which are almost identical. Take it from someone who aced the class... Cramster.com will save your ass a hundred times over when it comes to learning this crap.
Lectures where bad. He made the class way too easy with extra credit for doing the homework. There's not really much to this class, just get the formula and solve for x.
Easy class if you get lucky with the tests (otherwise they are hard) and do the homework(use cramster.com, it will save your ass). Adds homework score to the test scores. Do all of the above and you should pass with at least a C.
Horrible Prof! He has a bad attitude and an incomprehensible accent. Dont bother with him when there are so many better options.
Don't bother going to class unless you have nothing else better to do. Homeowrk answers is easily obtained from online (cramster). Before taking the final, I was already guaranteed a C. :)
Lectures are straight out of the book, but he doesn't explain some of the calculations he does when he introduces topics, which makes learning hard at first. If you get over 70% on the homework then he adds 20% to your test - it helps a lot! The class was good, but somewhat challenging. Really helpful with practice tests
horrible teacher! the only good thing is the extra credit for doing homework which is on cramster
Terrible teacher. Don't bother going to class. Better off learning from the book. Do the HW it becomes extra credit on tests. Go to class before each test to get practice tests. All HW is on Cramster
Lectures are all right out of the book. Thick accent but understandable. He's not bad but he's not great. Homework counts as 20% extra credit on tests so make sure to do the homework. It saved me. Lectures didn't help much. He pretty much just works through examples right out of the book in lecture.
Very fair professor. Funny guy. I like him.
He is good at physics but not at teaching it. Has a sense of humor that is easily overlooked. Attendance is not mandatory. His lectures are straight out of the book. Gives 20% extra per mid-term if you get a 70% on your online homework. CramsterDotCom helped out alot with homework.
Very easy to pass. I never attended lecture after the first week. I taught myself the chapters the weekend before each test and was able to manage. I like physics but I couldn't stand to sit in his class as they were over the top boring. Lectures page by page with the book. Take if you don't mind teaching yourself/don't care for interesting classes
great professor..loved his class, classy guy, wonderful accent from south america bem, bem , bem
excellent professor..doesnt spoon feed but explains the subject well. enjoy his classes, humor and intelligence
Prof is kinda hard to understand but the class is fairly easy. Huge extra credit for tests as long AS YOU DO WELL ON YOUR HOMEWORK! I don't go to lecture very often and teach myself, though the book isn't too helpful. I recommend him over the other physics prof (heard he's horrible).
Overall I liked this professor, his class was not that bad for being a physics class. 20% extra on the exams if you do the homework which really helps your grade, plus the class has a big curve and your lowest test grade gets dropped. Not mandatory to go to class because he lectures straight from book.
If ur a natural at math, u probably won't struggle since homework gives u 20 extra points on 100 point tests. On the other hand for someone like me, where math is difficult, you will be forced to teach yourself the material, because this guy will only zip thru powerpoints without finishing problems. Aren't profs supposed to teach? Guess not.
Horrible teacher. I went to every class and went to 6 hours of tutoring a week and still only got a B+. Half of the example problems he did on the board were wrong. Power points were pictures and tables copied directly from the book. He would stand there and read them, when the tables were completely irrelevant to the course.
Good luck passing this class. If it wasn't for the extra credit homework assignments and an AMAZING TA, there is no way I would have passed this class. When I went to his office hours for help he just got frustrated with me for not understanding. His practice tests are nothing like his exams because 'if they are similar then it would be cheating.'
Worst professor at SDSU. The only thing that got me through this class was the 20% extra credit from homework as well as the cheat sheet we were allowed at every exam. I'm pretty natural at math so that's why I got an A, but I didn't really learn anything. If you're good with numbers, you're fine... If not then you're not. This guy is bad..
Nice man BUT... Very unclear and has very poor methods of teaching; you must teach yourself. Asking to get help from him will completely waste your time. Ex: He spent 2 hrs. attempting to solve his own homework question, during tutorials and still couldn't solve it!
Not that hard of a class. I recommend just studying on your own. Only go to class the last class before the midterm. He knows his stuff, but not the greatest teacher in the world. Better off studying on your own and you can get an A. Do the HW to get 20% extra on each midterm and a 85% is an A in the class.
If you can take another professor, do it. Lectures are abstract and have nothing to do with calculations. Practice exams are useless. Honestly the worst professor i have ever had. Exams have no questions from homework or lecture? He talked down to the class when we all did not do well. If you want to learn physics wait for someone else.
If you can avoid taking this professor, do it. Sometimes does practice problems incorrectly. Even when he does a practice problem correctly, he does it quickly and it's very difficult to follow. His exams are not similar to the homework, practice problems done during lecture, or even his practice exams. He's by far the worst professor I've ever had
By far one of the worst teachers I've ever had! He is super confusing, doesn't speak very clearly, and often gets confused during his own example problems. The only good thing is that he offers extra points on tests if you do the homework. Otherwise, I don't think I would have passed!
Smart guy.. Really crappy professor though... Lectures are not helpful and the tests are unnecessarily tricky.
If you can do at least pre-calculus, this class is not hard at all. Professor T was funny in my opinion, although he will call you out (rightly so, in my opinion) if you talk too much in lecture.
He is probably the worst professor that I have had so far. His tests are so difficult and doesn't do well explaining his lectures. It is essentially pointless to go to class except that he does HW problems every so often which gives an answer. I accidentally marked the wrong form and he wouldn't change it, not an understanding prof whatsoever
Easy class
Heavy accent and sometimes cracks jokes. However, he is unable to clearly convey physics to students trying to learn. He talks extremely generically about subjects that we learned in 8th grade physics. He does problems in class, few if any. Tests are graded out of 10 MC problems, so one wrong means 10% gone. The final was only out of 8.
Torikachvili is a pretty run-of-the-mill Physics professor. He is funny and fairly good at explaining topics. His lectures are helpful, but not necessary. His curve is very intense, but tests are the only grade and are very few questions. Homework, although not mandatory, will very heavily boost your test grade.
Gives out 4 tests and a final and drops the lowest, so if you have a good grade going into the final, you don't have to take it. Doing the HW automatically gives you 20 points on exams. While he does explain some things in lecture, they are not necessary because you can teach yourself through the HW. overall, another average professor.
The whole grade was based off of your highest 4 exams (5 exams total) so you could not take the final. Homeworks are tedious and sometimes difficult but they give you a boost on the exams. Exams are not easy but manageable with the homework boost. Bottom line: DO THE HOMEWORK and STUDY FOR EXAMS. Class is not necessary to go to since PP are online.
Math people, don't fall asleep. Professor T is really laid back but the material in E&M takes off regardless of what the teacher's urgency is. He could help you out by doing a better job of consistently taking the class seriously but it will be on you to motivate yourself or your grade Will slip as the class goes on.
5 total exams he drops one. None of the tests are cumulative they each just cover 2 chapters. Get 70% on the hw and that's a 20% bonus on your next exam. The tests suck cause they're 6-7 mult choice questions so each is worth like 15-20%. An 85% is an A. I clinched an A in by the 4th exam so I didn't have to go to class anymore, soooo clutch!
Class teaches you to be creative with your problem solving skills at the expense of your grade and gpa
5 test drop one. He give me 0 while i can get a 100 because i did not write the name and process on the paper which is not need to submit usually. I was confused why the TA collected my paper after glancing it, now i know. that is how they scatter degree. My solid A boomed.
This class was probably one of the hardest I've taken at state. It's unavoidable if you need it to graduate, so you just have to power through. Class isn't extremely helpful and I skipped a lot. I studied like a madman before each exam and barely passed. DO THE HOMEWORK!!! it's 20 points extra credit.
Torikachvili's PHYS196 was a pretty mediocre class. Your grade is made up by the top 4 of 5 tests (each test worth 25% of your grade) with each test only containing about 5-8 questions. Doing 70% of the homework nets you 20% extra credit on the test for that section which is EXTREMELY helpful. No partial credit on the tests, it's all or nothing.
Don't ever take him. I have no clue how he's still teaching here. In a 500 person lecture only 100 or so show up on a good day. If you want to pass watch Michel Van Biezen on YouTube unlike Milton he can actually teach you how to solve problems in a way you understand. You'll never understand his accent or his writing.
The tests are mostly about using formulas and being able to calculate problems through tons of math. He rarely goes over examples that has to deal with these questions on the test and always spends most of the time explaining how each equation is derived which is no help at all. Trust me I show up to every lecture, this happens every day.
Be ready to read from the book to understand the material as needed. Sometimes his lectures won't cover everything he expects you to know in the test but if you are able to do the HW problems + the optional ones you'll be fine.
I show up to every lecture for every class until I came upon this one. Showing up won't help you on the tests. No amount of studying will help you on the tests. Don't bother showing up if you don't want to waste your time.
Tough class, I don't know whats harder; trying to teach yourself physics at this level or going to class and decipher this mans work and explanations. about 40 people go to class out of 500 after the first week. Bright side only need a 200/400 to get a flat C (guy knows this is ridiculous). follow his "rules" or you'll fail.
Lectures had no resemblance to those terrible test he hands out. Hope you're good at multiple choice
Get ready to get rekt. Pearson hw is trash, lectures do nothing to inculcate the material. Overall, take this class elsewhere.
This class is horrible. the lectures are pointless and the tests are unbelievably hard. there is really no good way to study for the tests because the questions will be way harder than the homework. the practice tests are sometimes helpful but you dont even get one for the final. if youre gonna pass you MUST DO THE HOMEWORK the points are crucial
just horrible, material confusing as hell. his teaching is non-comprehensible. and the tests are the worst system ever designed, the whole test is 5 multiple choices questions where you need to show 100% of your work. if you chose the right answer but did 70% of the work you'd get ZERO for the question. 20% of the test just gone, no partial credit.
all of my friends and I have retaken this class because this guy makes physics so hard to understand. he literally does the most at all times and just sucks. his tests are hard af and are nothing like the homework, literally do whatever you can to not take this class with him. transfer schools. But he is the only p196 professor at sdsu so goodluck
Terrible professor. Literally nothing you can study off of. His lectures are useless and the homework is only useful for finding the formulas that you'll use on the exam. Good luck.
Honest review for avg joe: all the reviews below me are TRUE. So i will give tips on how to actually pass the class. Chegg has saved me many times throughout college &this is one. Do the hw it's for EC. Get creative with your cheat sheets and "show work" for everything you can. If its blank they take ur test & scantron and give 0 credit. gluck
SOMEONE ELSE needs to take over. He will spend 95% class deriving equations --not actually applying them. Chegg saves lives. How do you expect us to know how to do something if you don't show us? He's discouraging too, telling you to drop the class, and saying you have no future in STEM. Tests are MC, 5Q, 20 pts each. Need to show ALL work.
Class is based on 4 tests and thats it. 5 questions and 20 points each. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. He's super helpful regardless of the class setting. Study by going over the hw repeatedly.
Torikachvili falls into the unfortunate category of definitely knowing material, but not being able to teach it well. That along-side his heavy accent makes it difficult to often understand. Also handwriting is poor, adding to the potential confusion. He allows formula sheets for tests, so use them effectively. Study the HW and lecture slides.
If you show up to EVERY lecture, and give it your FULL attention the ENTIRE time, you will do well. He teaches everything well, but does not repeat material. If you cant commit your full attention then youll have to read the textbook too.
Prof. Torikachivill was a very kind prof. He offered an extra 20 points in the class if you scored above a 70% on hw. Also dropped lowest tests. Lectures were sometimes confusing but that could be due to zoom. Solid choice for physics overall and plays fun videos during lecture.
he is not understanding at all the test closed on me while i was doing it i contacted him he didnt reply until the few hours passed by and he refused to re-open the test i would not recommend him at all and the way he discourage the students is awful
(Taken online during COVID): The class is entirely done on your own, so if you don't get it good luck. If you do all the HW you should at least get by with a C, but don't expect more than that. 400+ students in the class, so he doesn't answer emails often/can help you with problems. Pray you have good tutors.
It's physics. It's hard. I went during COVID so it was online. He added the same lectures from last semester, because of this I don't feel like I know him and that we were just getting the work done. That's good for some but for others it may not be. He made the lectures in short pieces which was really nice. I just have no reason to give him 5.
Tests were nothing like the homework and were much more difficult. You don't need much to pass but if you want an A it is very difficult.
Physics is difficult and this professor didn't make it any easier. He posted many recorded lectures, but they didn't always feel very helpful. Maybe he's a better prof in person. The tests were hard and never felt like I had enough time. Luckily, we were allowed to drop 1 test including the final and 2 hw. Only need to do 70% of hw for full credit
Prof. Sundqvist was substituting for Prof. Torikachvili during my semester. He only posted mediocre pre-recorded lecture videos from Prof. Torikachvili. Watch Prof. Matt Anderson's videos on YouTube to learn the material. Your grade is made up of HW and exmas. He drops the lowest exam and HW. There is a huge curve, you only need a 51% to pass!
Most people fail the first test and then realize how much you need to study outside of his lectures. Grade depends on homework and tests with 10 questions and no partial credit, so don't miss a negative sign and lose 10% of your test grade. He rarely replies to emails so if you have questions, ask someone else.
the lectures are completely useless and I learned everything from chegg. I took it online so I didn't have to deal with him directly but he was very un-accomodating when I got injured and missed homework. I'd say he's a mid-low teacher.
horrible professor overall. Lectures were completely useless and I had to learn everything by myself. Im paying thousands in tuition just to end up watching youtube tutorials to learn. SDSU needs to get rid of this guy asap.
He is not very good at making students truly understand the material. He assigns so many practice problems and assumes we actually have the time to do them. It is difficult, but it is possible to pass.
This is a luck based physics class. The homework is incredibly hard, and the tests are nothing like the homework. In an attempt to prevent cheating, mastering is telling professors to make the questions extremely difficult and convoluted. That being said, Milton has a very lenient grading scale that makes it very easy to pass.
Just don't do it
Torikachvili is not a great lecturer. He often talks about things that aren't directly related to the content and doesn't make much sense when explaining things. If you asked him a question, it'll most likely be answered with something other than what you asked. He does offer pretty good "curves" though, dropping the lowest test and homework.
Dr T's lecture are difficult to understand, he goes through the content extremely quickly. The homework can take a lot of time, but because the tests are through Pearson, the same program that does the homework as long as you practice most of the problems the test questions will be similar. Recommend reading the book or watching lectures before.
Professor Torikachivili is the most OK teacher in the physics department. Its apparent that he cares for his students, but the lectures were pointless. Most learning came from reading the textbook and practice. Assigned in class participation quizzes every day to encourage attendance. All exams are on Pearson, no partial credit, so study hard.
Tests are 4/5 of ur grade and only the lowest gets dropped. His lectures are pointless and there is so much homework. The tests are IMPOSSIBLE with no partial credit so good luck. He is such a nice guy but I wish he was a better grader.
Dr T is an amazing professor. His lectures supply you with all the equations and info you will need to complete the homework. He gives us practice tests that are similar in concept to the actual exams(lowest gets dropped. Studying the homework is good enough to do well in his class. His office hours are really helpful and he is a nice and funny guy
He's a funny guy but his lectures don't make sense. Grades are determined by your tests and each test has 10 multiple choice questions with NO partial credit. He does example homework problems in class that are mostly correct but otherwise create a group with this class it is your best bet.
Super nice guy but his lectures are a bit confusing as he often goes over really complex derivations and the slides them selves have very little information on them. Worst part about this class is the exams. 10 questions all multiple choice, leaving no room for errors of any kind. Decent teacher but without a E&M background, this class is rough.
Lectures don't make sense and the exams are insanely hard. Good luck if you forgot to put an equation on your equation sheet for exams because he does not give that information to students. If you want to pass this class make sure that you read the textbook.
This guy is nice enough but his lectures are so garbage as he spends so much time talking about derivations, and sometimes doesn't even finish his examples. The tests are pretty difficult, 10 questions multiple choice with one being out of 7 so one wrong grade explodes. Very easy to pass though as the threshold for a C is massive.
He's a cool guy, but his lectures are pretty confusing. He covers a lot of derivation and very little information on his lecture slides. Your best bet if you have to take this guy is to self-teach, attend TA office hours, and read the textbook. The worst part of this class is the exams. There are five MC exams with no partial credit whatsoever.
Funny guy but thats not enough, lectures arent great with in class examples sometimes being wrong. Exams are also very difficult but the class is heavily curved
he was sometimes difficult to understand during lectures and i definitely would recommend staying after class/going to office hours if you have questions, rather than asking during class. also gta harry g does review sessions toward the end of the semester on zoom, would recommend watching those and doing dsms to pass/understand
Took Dr T's class Fall 2024. Going into the class you need to understand the curve. To get a C you need 50% of the given points. You shouldn't be taking STEM classes if you can't achieve that. A funny guy who understands his material. Similar setup to 195 with Pearson, so it shouldn't be jarring.
Funny guy but unfortunately not great at teaching the concepts of physics, you will mostly just be remembering formulas and problems. Tests are very hard and homework is long but because of the grading curve its pretty easy to at least pass with a C.
I basically taught myself everything but he was funny sometimes. I will say, going to lecture helps a lot because he shows you the equations and sometimes how to use them...
celtics shaq
Chelsea fernando torres
I basically taught myself. Lots of homework. Tests are insanely difficult and confusing, completely different from the homework and there is no partial credit for procedure, if you miss even a sign but your procedure is good you will get it wrong even though you know the material. Bad lecturer, boring class, easy to pass with a C with half points.
5 exams, 1 is dropped. The test are really hard, even after reading the book and doing the homework. It is a hard class to fail but also very hard to get an B+/A. His lectures don't add anything, very surface level. All problems done in class and at the practice exam are way easier than the exams.
Lectures barely cover formulas and laws, rarely the concepts themselves, you have to read the textbook to do well. Homework takes HOURS to complete. Tests can be very challenging, but if you read the chapters and watch the review sessions you should be ok. Worst thing is majority of grade relies on the tests (80%) but he drops the lowest one.
This professor was alright ngl
