Usually, with languages you don't have to be fluent until 2001. However with this class and THIS teacher, you have to be fluent. If you are not she will fail you and not care that your LEARNING, she only cares about following the curriculum . Don't Take or else, you are asking for a bad grade or a" W"
Incoherent! Very unhelpful! if you walk into class a few minutes late (after) roll, she marks you as absent. you only get 4 absents until your grade drops. Final was harsh and she did little to prepare us for it. She will also tell you something is for an attendance grade and count it against you. NO EXTRA CREDIT either on the BRUTAL class.
She seemed nice at first. But she is really unhelpful when you get to a test, where she basically says "just study everything." or if you don't understand something she "just read the book." Take another teacher.
Alonso doesn't deserve such negativity. She does speak in spanish frequently in class, but she repeats everything she says in english. She gives you a study guide for every quiz and test! She comes around to each individual student to ask if you have any questions. She does grade kind of hard, but she really wants you to be able to learn.
A quarter of your grade is online, so you are in control of a good portion of it. She speaks in spanish in class, but she will repeat it in english if you don't understand. She walks around and helps everyone in class to make sure they understand. She doesn't seek out mistakes in your test. If you try you'll get what you deserve in the class
Milvet is honestly great! I don't know why there are any negative comments here. She gives thorough study guides for each quiz and test and goes over it ahead of time. She is always walking around to answer questions and help out. The online homework is easy and is a big chunk of your grade. She's awesome I would take her again!
Also not understanding the bad reviews for Milvet. She was very nice, funny, and helpful. Her class is fairy easy if you do your online work and put forth a reasonable amount of effort.
She was a very nice and helpful teacher. I never dreaded my 9:05 despite the time. She had practice in class where most of the teaching was done outside of class. I would recommend if you have the opportunity.
I don't know why Milvet had such poor reviews earlier, but she was very caring about her students' success this semester. She always made sure everyone understood her & asked if anyone needed help with the assignments. Great class!
I've taken Spanish before in high school, so I may be biased but Prof Alonso was super sweet and easy! The lowest grade I got on an assignment was a 96 and I do not consider myself fluent in spanish. This was her first semester teaching so I guess that's why there were many harsh reviews.
Milvet is an awesome teacher! She is patient and super helpful when students are confused. She is very clear with instructions and always gives a study guide before pruebas. The tests are WAY easier than the activities we do in class.
Milvet is extremely helpful. All you have to do is ask for help and you'll get it. The curriculum was very rushed and there was a lot to cover, which was frustrating for me. But, she did a great job of helping us and preparing us for test/quizzes/finals/etc. I'd recommend her.
I would highly recommend Ms. Alonso! She is always willing to help her students succeed, and grades the tests/quizzes far easier than the other professors. I put in very little effort and got a B+. Quizzes are 5%, but they are easy. Midterm and final are 15% each. DO THE HOMEWORK. it is 25% of your grade and it is SO easy.
Professora is one of the best spanish teachers I have ever had. She is very professional and simple to follow. She incorporates the language in ways you can comprehend it. She is very helpful to her students and the work is not too hard. As long as you put some studying towards the class then it will be simple. The final was the only difficult part
Very nice and helpful professor. Always willing to give clarification if needed. Quizzes and other assessments are not too difficult; you just need to be prepared, and Profesora makes review sheetsguidelines and does review in class for pretty much everything. I would definitely recommend Milvet if you have to take this class.
Most boring class ever, and she will always hold you for the full time. We never got out of class one minute early. Lectures are long and repetitive, mostly useless and come straight from the book. She assigns 5 papers and many quizzes throughout the course. There's also an oral presentation that has to be 10 minutes long! Overall boring teacher.
I did not think she was very nice or helpful to certain students. If you tried to get help, she would try to help, but it was not always too helpful because she does not speak English too well. There is a department wide syllabus, so who you take does not matter too much. It is doable, but it is not an easy A for most people.
Absolutely wonderful teacher! Extremely caring and invested in her students. Would recommend 1,000X over.
Not a hard class, no tests just announced quizzes on reading and grammar. Kind of boring but there isn't much work either.
No exams. Just 5 grammar quizzes and 5 reading quizzes (all announced), and four essays (2 in class 2 out of class). Homework is very short. The class is not very difficult, as long as you try.
Milvet is a great professor. While her English is limited, she knows how to simplify things well when her students have a question. However, she does not tolerate absences, or even tardys, and makes you type your homework assignments and print them more times than not, which often made me late for class. Participation is important.
I enjoyed her as my professor, and I do believe that she has helped me with my spanish. I wouldn't mind taking her again!
Very cut and dry class. There are a lot of small assignments and quizzes, but no tests. Alonso is a solid choice and cares about her students, and I will be taking her again next semester. If you are willing to just study for her quizzes, show up every day, and are a decent speaker/writer, you will enjoy this class.
Great teacher and person. You don't have to be really good at Spanish to get an A. The majority of the class is conversation about global issues, so you just have to come up with an opinion. All homework/quizzes are announced. Some weeks you have no homework at all. I devoted like 0- 20 minutes to this class a night. Super doable.
Milvet is a pretty great Spanish teacher that takes your level and understanding of Spanish into consideration with grading. She is very helpful and patient with students. Participation matters a lot and can really boost your grade if you just speak.
What she says in the syllabus she means, no matter what. I had a family emergency and was late to class (still went) and was ridiculed in front of the class. This happened multiple times, not just to me. If you show up after the door is closed, you will be late. For a 3010 class and someone with only a master's degree, it was ridiculous.
Sra. Alonso is one of the better spanish teachers that I have had a UGA. The class has a lot of homeworks that usually only take a few minutes, and there are no exams, just 5 reading quizzes, and 5 grammar quizzes, along with 4 compositions (2 in class, 2 at home). She makes sure that you understand the material, and is always willing to help.
I love spanish, but this Span lit with this professor is the worst. I put in a lot of work and left feeling like I didn't learn or improve. She is picky with grading, participation, and attendance. She will take off points if you go to the bathroom. She also made me feel dumb and disrespected if I gave the wrong answer in class.
She was good because she made us talk in class and practice our Spanish, but she also was a very tough grader. Her tests were insanely hard, but she graded the essays fairly.
I love Spanish, but I feel like I didn't really get a lot out of this class. Professor Alonso is a good teacher, but she kinda made me hate coming to class. It's a lot of partner activities and speaking in class, so participation really counts. The grade is essentially grammar and reading quizzes, compositions, and participation.
Milvet is not necessarily a hard teacher, but she is a very picky grader. She unnecessarily took points off essays and tests. She is also very picky with participation, even if you talk sufficiently, you won't get a high participation grade. The class is somewhat interesting if you enjoy Spanish literature, however I don't recommend taking her.
HW after almost every class, in class quizzes are straight memorization. Tests are tons of writing/short answer questions. Doesn't put any materials online so you have to take extremely detailed notes to study for tests
Worst professor I've ever had. Terrible teacher, unfair grader, and not very friendly. Really tough on participation. After the first half of the semester, I received a poor participation grade so I actively participated the second half of the semester and received an even lower grade. Received As in all other Spanish classes but this one.
Literally awful, do not take this professor EVER. Quizzes and tests are so hard. A lot of difficult homework. Not approachable. Doesn't let you make up quizzes/tests even if you were sick or had a legitimate excuse. In the past Spanish was not difficult for me, however this professor has made me not enjoy it and dread going to the class.
Alonso is a good professor, not amazing, but she teaches the class just fine. All of our work and discussions are centered around the textbook while I believe other 3010 classes are more open discussions. People in my class complain about the work but it's pretty standard book work. I took AP Spanish last year and this is the same level or easier.
She is a fine teacher. However, she does not care about her students succeeding at all. She does not accept late work or excused absences. She is rude when asked questions and does not seem to want to help outside of the class time.
The BelJean packet used for class is humongous, twice the size of what one should be, and you do read every single page. She grades really, really hard, and if you don't word anything exactly like she wants it, it's not correct. The class content was interesting, though, but not enough to make me want to take a class with her again.
Professor Alonso is a kind person, but very type A. She has very high expectations when it comes to grading. We took quizzes on reading and grammar, and I always scored worse than I expected because she was so picky. She does grade more lightly for presentations and oral exams. I got a 5 on my AP Spanish exam in high school, but I got a B+.
I have gotten A's in all of my Spanish classes until now. She grades so hard on the homework and quizzes, where even if you miss small thing, she counts the entire thing wrong. I ended up not being able to pull off the class and had to withdraw. Take a different professor if at all possible-seriously. Not worth the struggle
I think some of these reviews are a little harsh. She does grade tough but she is really kind and genuinely wants students to understand the material. Absolutely ZERO English ever. The grammar quizzes are tough and people get Cs on them frequently but you can still end up with a good overall grade if you stick it to the end of the semester.
Very old school when it comes to technology so be prepared to put it up. She knows what she is teaching. Do not be afraid to go to her office hours and talk to her; she is very open to those who seek her help and show an interest. She is extremely professional and gives a lot of feedback. Grades hard but it's necessary if you intend to learn.
I took Alonso for 3010 & 3020 which had almost the exact same structure. Her class is HARD for sure, but it's not impossible if you stay on top of work and participate. If you struggle at all with Spanish or don't like talking in class discussions, I would not recommend taking her. I think my Spanish definitely improved a lot when I had her though.
Profesora Alonso does not speak English super well, which is frustrating when trying to learn spanish from her. She doesn't understand why we cant speak with perfect accents or why spanish is difficult because she is a native speaker. She even spoke in spanish at office hours, which made it worse. Overall just too difficult to work with
So hard I had to withdraw. Absolutely impossible to get a 100 or high A on anything because she just rips you apart. The presentations are brutal and the quizzes are even worse. Doesnt care about student success or understand that English speakers will never be able to speak like natives. Seriously, get a different teacher
Milvet is a tough grader but she is very nice. Though I did not get the grade I wanted, my writing and reading levels GREATLY improved. This was a hybrid class, so I am sure in person is a lot easier. She cares for her students and wants them to learn. Tough grader.
There was lots of homework, but that is expected when learning a new language. Almost everything was done through Connect. She grades easily, however Connect does not when it comes to spelling. She is very kind and helps you when you don't understand something. I'd take her again. Make sure you have computer access and good WiFi.
Dr. Alonso is an extremely difficult and unfair grader. It felt impossible to make good grades in her class due to the arbitrary nature of her grading. I remember on multiple quizzes feedback said "This is correct, but I don't feel confident in your understanding" so she marked it wrong despite saying it was right. I would not recommend.
Honestly not that hard of a class for 3020. Had homework based off of readings from textbook almost every class but it's not hard just annoying. Everything was take-home NO in-person worksheets/ quizzes/tests! In-class assignments can get repetitive but again, not hard just annoying and you work in groups most of the time.
I highly recommend taking this class. If you are present and class and do the respective homework assignments you won't have any problems. She gives great feedback and I feel like my Spanish improved significantly in her class! Just show up, participate, and you'll be fine!!
Professor Alonso sticks by the syllabus but the class is really manageable. You do have to show up every day but she's super nice and I feel like I really learned a lot!
She was a great teacher but you will need a good understanding of spanish to do well in her class. She talks slowly and clearly so she is easy to understand. You will be expected to talk in spanish every class. She reviews the grammar quickly and doesnt offer much outside of the classroom help. It is a challenging class but you will learn a lot.
She is a really tough grader on the grammar quizzes. It is definitely doable to make an A in the class if you do well on the presentations and participate in class. She is very intimidating at first but I kind of warmed up to her.
The professor seems nice and caring, but this class is just a Spanish elective and the homework takes up more time than all my 4 other classes combined. There are readings and questions assigned after every class that take 2 hours per assignment. We are also assigned just as much if not more readings on Friday that are due Monday. Don't recommend.
After taking other classes with horrible professors, Professor Alonso is, in retrospect, a great professor. I always found her class a little hard for me, but although there was homework, it was 1000x better than other professors that require you to read for every class and have no participation in class. Wish I could take her class again.
Profesora Alonso is awesome! She really cares about improving your speaking abilities, and her class is designed to improve your Spanish A LOT over the course of the semester. Although her grammar quizzes are a little tricky, they are very doable and you will do well on them if you listen to her grammar lessons in class. Take her for 3010!
Her class is difficult, but reasonable. Since it's a speaking class, she lets you take quizzes and tests at home, open note. The assignments are challenging, but you will have what you need to do well. If you apply yourself in class and on the assignments, not only will you be able to do well, but your Spanish will no doubt improve.
Professor Alonso's homework is a bit hard if you don't understand Spanish to a certain degree. Some of the content is heavy so definitely be ready to read. A very understanding teacher just don't miss class.
Great professor and definitely wants you to learn. Only get 2 skips all year though or you lose points. Also, her quizzes are hard. Gives some homework but nothing unreasonable. Very manageable class and can learn a lot if you want to.
You need to have a really really really good grasp of essentially everything before you come. Lectures are mostly reviews of the textbook and application of grammatical tenses. She's really good at answering questions. Harsh grader on quizzes corrects you while you're talking. Midterm, Final, and oral presentions are online and open note.
This woman was the reason I dropped my Spanish major
I dont rly understand the bad reviews. If you actually want to learn and get better at Spanish, she is a great option. The discussions in class can be repetitive but I rly found myself getting better and speaking and comprehending Spanish. This has been one of the most helpful Spanish classes I have taken so far.
I absolutely LOVED Milvet and would recommend her 100%. She was such a good teacher who made sure that her grading criteria was very well known. She is honestly hilarious if you crack her - which our class definitely did. She does her entire lecture in spanish so get ready for that, but it's not too terrible at all.
All of her other reviews say that she's tough and a harsh grader, but I never had this problem with her! She's very sweet and funny if you actually try in class. Also she does interrupt you to correct you, but since this class is a speaking class, it's definitely necessary so that you can make sure you're learning and saying things correctly!
Sge was my favorite Spanish professor I have had. She is very knowledgeable, engaging, and gives great feedback. She is happy to answer questions and facilitates great relationships between students. Her quizzes are difficult but they aren't a large part of the grade. I thought she was very fair, but she strictly adheres to her syllabus.
Milvet is by far my favorite Spanish professor I have had at UGA. She is very kind and encouraging. The quizzes and assignments aren't very difficult, and the lowest assignment and quiz grade gets dropped (if I remember correctly). I always enjoyed going to her class and I think my Spanish improved a lot thanks to her.
Incredible course/professor and not difficult. Homework was manageable, and Alonso is an easy grader, funny in class, and personable. The one issue I will say: you only get two absences for the semester NO MATTER WHAT. I had a health issue and a note to excuse me, but she would not accept it. Just be ready to be in class every day, and it's great!
This is a speaking class and Dr. Alonso will make sure you participate. There wasn't too much homework and our exams were taken online. However, the classwork was very tedious and made a 50 minute class feel like 2 hours. The quizzes were difficult but she does her best to prepare you for each one. If you want an A, don't miss class.
Professor Alonso is a great professor for taking SPAN 3020. She actively makes sure you are engaged in conversation with your peers, which makes you more comfortable with speaking Spanish with others. However, her quizzes are sometimes difficult, but the lowest one is dropped. Her attendance policy is very strict, so you need to attend class.
Alonso is great-- The homework load is very manageable, and she tells you exactly what will be on the quizzes and drops your lowest quiz. Easy class to get an A. However, she is very strict with attendance. I had a concussion mid-semester and she would not accept my doctor's note to excuse me from class. Use your 3 free skips wisely.
Do your work and come to class prepared. If you don't do your work, that's the only time you'll run into problems. She doesn't put up with goofing around with the work for her class.
I had Professor Alonso for this class and SPAN3010 and loved her. Attendance is mandatory but she allowed 3 skips for the 9:10 class and 4 skips for the 8:00. She gives thorough and helpful feedback on quizzes and homework which are easy because she posts study guides. She is a fair grader and not as tough as everyone else says. Take her class !!!
Take her for 3020! Although the class itself may not be easy, Alonso was very sweet and always did her best while teaching and answered questions. She gives hw every week but it doesn't take long and is easy. textbook was pretty expensive so I wouldn't buy one if your friends already have it. Grades fairly and lets you know what she expects
Alonso is wonderful! I have taken her for 2 semesters and appreciate what a clear communicator she is. She answers emails quickly and is always clear about her expectations. BUT Only 3 absences before you get a grade reduction-- not exceptions!
Attendance matters!! Great instructor but the daily homework sometimes felt tedious. Pretty light grader on the compositions and gave study guide practice for each quiz that was veryyyy helpful. Overall, participate, don't miss class, and put in the effort to get an A. It is manageable and I am taking her again for 3030!
Just go to class and understand the grammar for the quizzes (4 total). Quizzes are graded out of 25 points. So, you miss 2 questions, that is already an A-. Midterm and final exam are take home and essentially open note. Profesora Alonso is not intimidating at all and encourages students to speak (not degrading). I would recommend her!!
Ms. Alonso was an amazing professor, love her. She is super sweet and helpful. Yes, as the other reviews say she will cut you off to correct you.. but again it is to correct you. She doesn't do it rudely or disrespectfully at all. She explains everything very thoroughly. Rarely any homework, oral presentation 1, midterm and final are take home.
I liked her as a person but she is a difficult professor. The book she required was over $200 for SPAN3020. Weekly homework assignments but nothing too difficult. The take home, online midterm and final exam was nice. A few grammer quizzes throughout the semester
Like some of the reviews say, Professor Alonso will be quick to correct you, but she is so helpful and really cares about your understanding of the class. Each class is pretty much full time participation, so you only get 3 absences before losing points, which is understandable. I would definitely take Alonso again!
Professor Alonso is very helpful with pronunciation, grammar, and overall Spanish comprehension. She cares about each student's success and is accessible outside of class. Participation is crucial to class as only 3 absences are allowed, and 75% of classwork is conversation. She creates a welcoming classroom environment, and class is fun to go to.
great professor. I have had alonso since 3010, and I always know what to expect. She is clear on expectations and requirements, and, if you follow through, you will have an easy A
I loved having Dr. Alonso! She will cut you off if you make a mistake, but she means well and is so easy to talk to. She creates a comfortable environment where everybody can talk without having to worry about their mistakes. The only downside is that she requires an old textbook that cost $70. Definitely recommend her!
Very kind human! Wants to see everyone succeed in the first Spanish class that really tests you. Exams are online and so are oral presentations other than the last one.
Daily HW but it is relevant to the stuff she tests you on. She has clear expectations and if you follow them, getting an A is not that difficult. ATTENDANCE MATTERS. I had her for 3020 and would take her again in the future, great professor!!
Dra. Alonso is one of my favorite Spanish professors! She's patient, engaging, and kind. The class is heavy in discussion, and she'll cold-call you, so if you're not willing to work on your oral skills, consider another class. Great pacing in the course, and there's constant review/preparation for tests. What you put in is what you'll get back.
