i hated this class. take another teacher.
This class was extremely hard. Go to tutoring alot to help get concepts explained, because he is quite difficult to understand. He was very helpful though, I could always find him in his office willing to help me out.
I loved him. He does have an accent, but after a day or two I could understand him perfectly. The tests are fairly difficult, but if you'll actually do the homework it's really not so bad. If you'll make a point of asking him homework questions then he'll answer them, but he doesn't do a "homework review." I had an overall positive experience!
I thought he was extremely hard...i had a 100 average in high school Honor's Calculus and struggled to get a B in this class. He is hard to understand and moves very quickly. Tests are hard, even if you do all the homework.
Tough teacher, and not the best at his job.
Foreign accent that is understandable and its math so everything he writes on the board is easy to read. Moves fast (one section per day) but does well explaining. Tough material, but he made bonuses frequent. When he puts problems on the board for review, DO THEM, he makes that bonus for the upcoming test. Tests are hard he gives partial credit
He's really nice, but he never emails students back. He's very awkward if you ask him a question after class. It is very clear that he should NOT be teaching an undergraduate math class. He is almost unable to follow his accent is so bad. He has difficulty with the english language. I recommend not taking him.
Fantastic teacher. Highly recommended. Unless you are just awful at math you should be fine in this class.
Excellent professor. He spends a lot of time in class on complicated proofs, but the proofs are not necessary to know to ace the tests. As long as you are able to do all the homework problems, tests should be pretty easy. He gives a good amount of partial credit on tests for wrong answers so show all work.
His test are really easy and he gives a ton of partial credit, if you do the homework you will be fine on his test.
One of the worst teachers I've ever had. I'm not sure if it was his complete lack of English comprehension or a total disregard for his students, but either way, I learned nothing from him despite my best efforts. Never answered questions (other than "it's obvious!"). All his lectures were straight from the textbook. Should be fired immediately.
Not a great professor. He didn't explain things clearly and I didn't learn much IN class. I had to have other tutors teach everything to me. Gives alot of partial credit and bonus point opprotunities. Do NOT take him.
very unclear about the material in endless powerpoints. Had to teach myself everything. He is a nice guy and he gives a lot of extra credit. Drops lowest exam. go to class everyday, if you have good attendance you can replace 2nd lowest test with final. do the HW too as it counts as much as a test in the end. Made an A but had to work crazy hard.
Even though this is a hard course, Min Sun makes it bearable with many extra credit opportunities. Attendance is not mandatory but if you go to all classes, you will get 20 bonus points on your final exam. Hw is required for each section, but there is also hw EC. He tries to make the lessons as interesting as possible. Accent but able to understand
Min Sun is not great at teaching at all. It is very difficult to understand him and he seems to not be able to understand what his students are saying either. The fact that his teaching assistants are better teachers then him is ridiculous. His notes are hard to understand due to his inability to use powerpoint correctly.
Sun knows the material and is a nice guy who gives a lot of bonus opportunity. However, his lectures and powerpoints are really hard to follow and he goes way to fast through the difficult material. Asking him questions is useless, he can't answer your questions eloquently enough in English for it to make sense.
His English is barely understandable, which is quite a problem when trying to learn calculus from him.
I had Min Sun for Calc 1 and 2. Both are hard classes, but Min replaces your two lowest tests with homework and your final. Perfect attendance gets you 30 bonus points on your final. He's always smiling! I would take him again.
He's foreign obviously so he's a little hard to understand. Tests are easier than homework, but still pretty difficult. He gives a TON of bonus points and if you attend class and participate, you're good to go. If you have never taken calc before I wouldn't recommend it, but I'm turning out with a good grade
If you haven't taken Calculus before, avoid Min Sun. Hard to understand and he's not much help at all. I taught myself using Khan Academy, so I did pretty well. The only thing that makes his class tolerable is the extra credit he gives.
Knows his stuff but is incredibly hard to understand. I'd already taken calc so it wasn't too bad but I wouldn't recommend for someone new to calculus.
He has a strong accent which is very difficult to understand. I had to teach myself the majority of Cal III. Tests are not too difficult and questions are usually similar to homework or textbook questions. Lots of extra credit opportunities and he replaces the two lowest test grades. Attendance is mandatory and can get you bonus points on tests.
Min Sun is a very nice man but is exteremly hard to understand. He gives TONS of possible bonus points which will come in handy around finals. If you have perfect attendence you can get 30 bonus points to your final grade. If you take him prepare to self teach or get a tutor.
Very hard to understand. If you take this class be prepared to teach yourself. Online homework was 100 times harder than problems worked in class. My tutor could barely work some of my homework problems
Don't listen to the others about his accent. He's actually very understandable. He CAN be a bit unclearconfusing sometimes about the topic. I took AP Calculus AB in high school, and I'm doing just fine in Sun's class. There's not a lot of hw. And the hw that there is, is multiple attempt and online. Lots xtra credit for participatioattendance.
Professor Sun is a little hard to understand because of his accent, and spends a lot of class time proving calculus concepts when you only need the concepts themselves to pass the test, but is a decent professor. He's very helpful and flexible, and listens to his students very well. (I took AP Calc BC in high school and scored a 5)
I am in Sun's class at the moment, and while calculus can be a difficult subject, I feel like he does a good job in teaching the material. His accent isn't bad like everyone says. He gives a ton of extra credit on tests and for participating in class. On tests, there is a free 20 points due to it being online for part of it. Overall, a great class.
Great teacher for all math classes. Give tons of extra credit makes good jokes and loves his job
Min Sun is great. His accent is actually very easy to get used to. Attendance is mandatory, but if its excused its fine. 30 bonus points added at the end of the semester for perfect attendance (other than excused absences). Homework online and easy. Tests are like problems worked in class. Tons of xtra cred opportunities!! Super easy A+
If you study and do the homework, you'll do fine. Does grade on participation, which is annoying. If you don't miss a single class, he will replace your lowest test score with your final and your second lowest test score with your homework grade. Accent is no problem, really nice guy.
Very good professor. If you can get past is accent (which isn't that bad), then its an easy class. I thought Calc II would be a very difficult class from what people had told me but I got an A in his class. His gives a lot of extra credit. If you go to class you'll do fine.
Dr. Sun is my dream grandfather. He is always excited to see us, and help us out. He teaches in a way that excites himself and others. I love him as a professor and friend. Every once in a while, I will see him in Fresh Foods, and he always smiles, waves, and says something nice. It makes my day. jk Week. 1010 would recommend. TAKE HIM!!! BONUSES!
Min Sun is a pretty great teacher. You get a ton of extra credit for going to class everyday (replaces lowest test with homework average if you have less than 4 absences) and will add 30 points to your final if you have no absences. His notes in class don't always make a ton of sense but pay attention to the homework bc that is basically the test
He is a really nice and funny guy. As others have mentioned, his accent isn't bad at all. A ton of extra credit for perfect attendance, practice tests, and a few other things. My main complaint is his confusing lectures. He seems to teach the theory or logic of the different concepts, but not the actual process of solving them.
I love Professor Sun, he is such a sweet guy!! He explains the subject matter very clearly and is always makes sure everyone understands. I would strongly recommend! Take his class!!! You won't regret it!!!
really nice guy! he will go out of his way to make sure you understand everything, he truly wants you to do well in the class. attendance is not mandatory if you work ahead on the homework and quiz and get an A on both. definitely take him! accent is hard to understand at first, but you get used to it
I was super confused, and I'm fairly good at math. He knows a lot, just nothing clicked for me. He gives a lot of bonus points! Just make sure you don't ever miss class! Also, do your homework. All of it.
Not bad, not good. His lectures aren't very helpful, but his lecture notes are extremely useful. He gives quizzes every week and offers extra credit if you learn to use MATLAB. Accent isn't bad.
Clear grading. Gives extra credit for attendance and a bonus practice test to make up some of the homework grades that might have been missed. Tests have two parts. One in class and one online so they are very easy.
He is very helpful and will answer any questions you have. He has an accent but he is still understandable. His lectures are not always clear. He really cares about how his students would prefer him to teach and how the tests are set up by taking a lot of surveys.
Can be hard to understand, but really nice and will help you through his class.
must sign in everyday. gives plenty of extra credit. he's basically a really sweet grandpa that gets really excited about math.
Really nice guy. He has an accent, but it's not a problem at all. He's just not good at explaining the concepts. Also, he gives A LOOOOT of extra credit. So, even though you might have to teach yourself half the things, the EC might make it worth it. Average/below average teacher but a really good grading system. Oh and there's hw due twice a week.
He may be nice, but he was one of the worst teachers I've had. He wasn't very helpful when asked questions about problems, and isn't very good at explaining or understanding. He may be better at teaching calculus than linear algebra.
He is understandable and very excited to teach
Min Sun is a great professor and a really good guy. He is always in a good mood before class and seems very enthusiastic about the subject material. Gives bonus points for attendance and volunteering in class. Has an accent but is very easy to understand. Class itself is pretty easy as long as you do the homework and pay attention in class.
He says the most hilarious things and is clearly passionate for calculus. Tests are a bit brutal, but there are lots of homework grades and his lectures are great. (For a man with English as a second language, he is remarkably understandable)
Sun loves his students and is very excited about Calculus. His accent is not bad at all and you can understand what he says 99.5% of the time. He has good notes and usually explains his examples very well. Sometimes you can see that he is almost too smart to teach this class but he does his best and i would take him again
I had a lot of fun in prof. Sun's class. You have to go up to participate on problems sometimes but that wasn't a problem for me personally. He understands English pretty well, but some of my more complex questions about what we were learning couldn't be answered.
Min Sun is very caring and will constantly ask for participation. He gives plenty of extra credit and is overall a good professor. He makes sure that you understand before moving on and he is very funny. He does have a bit of an accent but it is not hard at all to understand him. I would definitely take his class again.
Gave lots of extra credit (for perfect attendance) but otherwise mostly lectured. I have taken calc 1 before and he made me more confused than I started.
Guy gives plenty of extra credit, miss less than three classes and your homework grade gets scaled up to a full test which helps if you do the homework, which you should. Basically as long as you do the homework and take notes, he's willing to work with you and genuinely cares about and likes teaching mathematics. His accent isn't bad at all.
Min Suns speaks clear enough English so I never had any issues with that. He was not always good at explaining topics but he was very noticeably passionate about teaching. His tests were fairly easy if you know the material. Attendance was mandatory. He gave lots of bonus, but you had to have a certain attendance rate to qualify. Overall very good.
Not too bad, generally easy to understand what he's saying. Offers some extra credit.
Do not take this teacher for linear algebra. Calculus, yes. But linear algebra is far too abstract for him to convey to students. Meaning he has a hard time understanding what you aren't understanding. Also, homework system (webWork) was horrible and he will not budge on the grade. He was completely different than in calc 2. I regret retaking him.
Teaching focuses on solutions to specific examples rather than steps and tools for mastering the content in any situation. You can replace your worst test with grade on final x 100%-(5 x number of absences), so if you miss a few times it doesn't help at all. No homework.
Very hard to understand as well as not the best writing so you have to work hard to understand him sometimes. He follows only the book making it just as easy to study on your own but don't worry you'll still struggle on the test with homework that only a few questions match the style of work done there as well as it not helping your grade.
He is not clear in his lecture materials, and when you go to his office he is willing to help, however what he considers help is really not "helpful". You're basically only graded on tests (4 tests and a quiz). There is "suggested homework", but it does not factor into your grade. You need "6" or higher on 2 W questions or its an automatic fail.
Dr. Min Sun, for higher math classes, should probably be avoided. If you ask a question he only askes you why you asked the question. For example, a student asked him a question and spent 20 mins of class time arguing why the student's question was mathematically invalid. He doesn't allow creativity in math, only what he considers right is "right".
I am a ME major taking this class to try and get a math minor. However, after how difficult this class was I am not pursuing a minor anymore. Comparing Min Sun's tests to other teachers' tests, Dr. Sun's were far more difficult and he tests you over the most difficult specific problems. Dr. Sun seems like a nice guy but this class wasn't for me.
he gives good lectures and explains clearly
He is a really nice guy and understands math very well. However, he goes through material way too fast and does not really answer students questions when asked. He also skips many steps of problems assuming you know how to do them when they are not obvious whatsoever. Gives extra credit for attendance, but its needed w/ how confusing he teaches
Be ready to teach yourself
Had taken calc in high school, so this was more of a refresher but I felt like his tests were fairly easy. Perfect attendance and completion of the survey at the end are worth a lot of extra credit points. Failed the final but didn't affect my grade.
Offers extra credit MATLAB opportunities, and understands the lecture material well; however, I do not recommend him for linear algebra. The lectures alone and book will not help you with the homework, quizzes, and tests. He does not offer study guides for tests. Many supplemental sources were needed to understand the homework, quizzes, and tests.
He is very passionate, but I could not understand his teachings. His accent was fairly easy to get used to but I just could not get my head around his techniques.
The class was really hard, but Dr. Sun did his best to give everyone an equal chance. He is very understanding and genuinely wants everyone in his class to succeed.
Was one of the rudest teachers I have ever had. Took him for Honors Cal 2 and after the first test I went to talk to him in his office hours and he told me that I was an "average" student and average students wouldn't do well in his class... I made 5 on AP cal test and made a 99 in Cal 1 Final brought me from B+ to a C-.. just don't take him.
Dude gave optional homework and no test prep material, also grades tests super tough
He doesnt give extra credits and gives heavy tests. So many papers and too many questions.
Min Sun is absolutely horrible at communicating the fundamental concepts needed for theory of probability. He only regurgitates information. Just avoid him if you can
Dr. Sun does not post lecture notes, collects handwritten homework alongside online homework, and does not really explain how to approach problems in theory of probability. Tests are straight from the homework, but still challenging. There are other options for 355.
Lectures and notes are confusing, and Dr. Sun mostly just regurgitated info from the textbook. He's willing to help if you go to office hours but the "help" he gave me was never useful. Not a super tough grader on HW, but gives written HW and the feedback he gives is awful. He's a nice guy but not an effective teacher at all. Avoid him if you can.
I can say without a doubt that Min Sun is the absolute worst professor I have ever had in my entire life, no exaggeration. His lectures are regurgitations from the textbook. His notes are extremely non-linear, hard to follow, and stream of consciousness. The average homework took 7 hours (I actually took samples). Avoid if you value yourself at all
Just wanted to reiterate what's already been said, specifically about the MA420 course. Far and away, the most stressful class I have ever taken. I implore you to do everything you can to avoid taking Dr. Min Sun's MA420 class, for your own well being. The material is interesting but I have had no choice but to teach myself everything independently
Yeah if you hadn't gotten the point yet don't take this class, dude's stuck in the past, when you go on OSM he's been teaching the class since 2006 so how he still hasn't developed a style that is in any way cohesive or clear to the students is baffling. It's almost like he doesn't understand it himself - blatant regurgitation w/ no commentary, 0/5
Pretty much the same as what the other reviews said for his MATH 420 class. The class was set up in a very confusing way, the information is not presented in a way that is easily understandable, and it is unnecessarily difficult to figure out how well you're doing in the class and if whether or not you understand the material. Avoid if possible.
feeling nice once you get used to his style.
Sun gets a lot of grief for being a tough professor for MATH420, but I'm not sure it was him or the material. He taught some things very nicely, but struggled with others and wasn't helpful when asking for help. So either you understood or you didn't and had to find help online. His homework took awhile, but it wasn't completely unreasonable.
This course was needlessly harder than it needed to be. You are on your own for the homework assignments. The Dr. Sun's notes are next to useless, and tests are graded very harshly. Min Sun is a nice guy, but he expects you to already know the content before coming to class. Do not take unless you have to, this is not an easy class.
Min Sun seems like a nice guy but expects you to already know most things about probability coming into the class. We had 2 tests and a final we do get extra credit but with the way he grades, you would never know how well you actually did. The course was harder than it should have been and the textbook did not help. Overall Do not take this class.
dont take him. just dont do it.
I love Min Sun. Class is challenging, but that is as expected. Helped me catch up to be best of his ability when I was struggling with my mental health. I didn't do well but that was totally on me.
The worst class I have taken. He can't explain anything, gives lots of HW. However, he is pretty linear while grading and try to get good scores on HW and go to class everyday as there is extra credit for full attendance. Will never take class with him.
NEVER take 420 or 421 with Sun. He is the WORST professor I have EVER had. Reads straight from textbook with little commentary never explains anything shames you for asking questions. This class single handedly destroyed my mental health and confidence in math ability. Entirely proofs. SAVE YOURSELF AND TAKE LITERALLY ANY OTHER CLASS
If you care about proofs and understanding the math you're working with, he's great. Additionally, the course is well structured in terms of homework, which build both theoretical and practical skills with different concepts, and tests are mostly based on the homework. His feedback is less helpful. You will struggle if proofs aren't your thing.
Perfectly good prof for MATH237. Gave plenty of extra credit and even provided us with notes before class. Very generous grading on tests and projects. He sometimes struggles with english/understanding questions which may frustrate some people but he was a good professor.
I expected Min Sun's class to be tough, but the challenge really depended on my own effort. His accent can be a little hard to follow at times, but his lectures are clear, organized, and you can tell he truly enjoys teaching and wants students to succeed. Tests are fair, like the homework, and he's generous with partial credit. He's also hilarious.
I was originally worried going into the course, but Dr. Sun made it really easy to understand the content! His notes can be a bit confusing but they made a lot of sense! You get a formula card on the exams. Study his study guides and homework questions and you will do well.
Professor Min Sun was not the easiest to understand but he definitely knows his stuff. However, if I wasn't already familiar with much of the course work, I don't think my final grade would have been as high. He gives reviews before the tests and the tests are pretty much always easier than the homework problems.
He's nice but he has an accent that can be hard to understand sometimes
He's a fine guy. He's nice enough but not great at teaching calculus. You can tell he knows what he's talking about but is not good at explaining. By the end of the semester I only showed up to class for the bonus points for attendance. If you're willing to take the time to learn it outside of the class room you'll do fine though.
Sometimes a bit of communication difficulties, but overall, he was a solid professor for the course. There is a good bit of homework, but that homework certainly makes the tests a breeze. He does explicitly say to read the textbook and offers many extra credit opportunities (e.g. through attendance).
Overall good professor, takes some getting used to the teaching style, but he will do his best to help you if you put in the effort to get help.
It's as easy as you make it. He teaches all the info, but you gotta do your part and review it all after class and before to make sure you really know it.
