she's very nice, and she just may be the cutest string theorist EVER. however, she isn't all that talented at explaining things. if i didn't already know the material i'd be lost in lecture. i usually just check her out and wonder if she's married while she's looking cute and defenceless while struggling to finish an ambiguous explanation.
Her exams are _very_ fair. When I took the final, I thought to myself, 'Wow, this exam is really well done!' I couldn't complain if I got a bad grade since the the tests weren't crappy like most physics tests I have taken. She seems to be new to lecturing and stutters a lot tho. Prolly needs more practice and/or confidence.
supercool
If you already know General Calculus, Math 1A with her may be a bit boring, but I know some people who were afraid of the lecture about Delta/Epsilon proofs. It was enjoyable because she pronounced it "ep-sigh-lawn" but it confused a lot of people. She needs to work on her explanation skills, but otherwise, she's a good and fair teacher on tests.
She is very helpful in office hours. Midterms and finals are fair. Lectures can get a bit wordy but still interesting and cover the material well.
easy class - she does a good job of making it seem harder than it is (ESPECIALLY when it comes to delta-epsilon proofs, geez!). if you took any calc or precalc in high school the class will be totally fine regardless of her teaching. lectures are pointless
It's an easy class if you just do the homework. You don't even really need to go to lecture. My only incentive for going to lecture once in a while was to check out Professor Mina and listen to that cute accent. And she does explain everything well.
Easy class, easy midterms...but the final was horrendous. She went out of her way to make it as difficult as possible with at least 5 parts to each question. She posted 3 sample finals online, all of which were straightforward and very similar to the midterms, yet the final was long, complicated, and poorly structured.
Midterms were very straightforward and like the homework, but she really tried to kill us all with the final. Overall, she needs to improve a bit on her lecturing skills. It seemed she was trying too hard to get our approval. The class is pretty easy, just make sure you don't fall behind, especially when you learn about proofs :/
Homework and lectures are decent, but what sets this professor apart from others is that the midterms are pretty straightforward and there aren't any "clever tricks" to most problems. However, the final was harder than anticipated. On another note, she is very cute for a physics nut, but that just might be the berkeley-vision taking over the senses
She is great, very enthusiastic, and generous with the grade curve
Great professor! Very willing to clarify things. The best part, though, is that she is totally cute. I'm in love.
Good class. Straightforward tests and material. Not the best lecturer, but it is worth going to class because Mina is pretty hot. Brains, beauty, and she's super cool. She is still young, so I imagine her lecturing skills will improve in the upcoming semesters.
Kind of difficult to understand during lecture because she was always super nervous teaching. Her midterms were pretty hard and the final was ridiculous. If you study hard and use the book alot you should be able to pull an A. Lecture isn't all that helpful, if you have questions go to her OH or GSI's OH.
Everything but the final was really easy. The final even wasn't that bad. She just threw a few curves that a lot of the class didn't expect. I didn't get some of them and still pulled off a good grade so don't worry so much about the final. If you know your stuff then it's fine. O yea she sucks at lecturing so you'll have to go to a GSI. Get Jana.
If you have taken calculus prior to her Math 1A class, this shouldn't be too difficult. I thought she was a decent lecturer; she goes through lots of examples. She has an accent, but she isn't hard to understand. Mid-terms are straight forward. The final definitely threw some curves, but if you understood the material, you could work through it.
Went to every lecture, but what helped the most was having the answer key for homework problems. As long as you thoroughly understand all the concepts behind the homework problems, you're set. Class attendance isn't necessary.
Well... The material for Physics 7C was Quantum Mechanics and Relativity. I think she taught it very well and clearly for such a difficult topic. Her tests were really fair. Rather surprised to find such a young professor teaching this subject.. haha.. she's pretty hot... Enjoyed this class a lot!
She apparently was nervous and struggled with her explanations at times. However, considering the topics of the class, I think she organized the lectures pretty well, gave very fair and straightforward exams, and showed her passion for teaching.
Don't take this class if you have never done Calculus. It's really hard. She's a sporadic teacher. Her accent is hard to understand. She tries really hard, but she's just not a good teacher. I was in tutoring for this class four days a week, at least. I eventually took 16A and did much better.
Mina isn't teaching this class anymore, but I really liked her. She was kind of nervous and kept dropping the chalk and the eraser, which I found very endearing. Class was early so I skipped out most days, but sometimes I went just to admire her (that pic above doesn't do her justice). You just need the textbook and your GSI for Math 1A.
I took this class 4 years ago when I was a freshman. I was doing some scheduling and found myself on this website again and remembered her, and just wanted to take the time to mention that despite her nervous tics and tendency to reach the end of lecture covered in a layer of chalk, she was one of the hottest math professors I have ever had.
BEST TEACHER EVER. gave hints on how to solve every problem on the first midterm.
Math 1B is apparently the most failed undergraduate course at Berkeley due to intense grading and difficult tests...Prof. Aganagic makes this class completely manageable though! She doesn't try to throw curve balls in her tests and even tells you how to approach every problem. Take Math 1B with her if you can!! You won't regret it.
Best math professor ever! She's clear, her tests are very reasonable, and best of all, she doesn't take herself too seriously. If you can take Math 1B with her, DO IT.
Generally explains concepts pretty clearly, and gives lots of examples in class. Her midterms are pretty easy, but that means a lot of people do well, which brings the curve down at the end. Final is a LOT harder than the midterms so watch out. Otherwise she's a pretty good professor
Very hard to follow her lectures. But other than that midterms and final were decent and fair.
In general give clear lectures with good examples; tries to answer all questions. Quizzes and midterms are relatively fair; the final comes out of left field, however, and is much harder than either of the midterms.
Mina is a fine lecturer. She explains concepts clearly and goes over example problems in class that are very similar to those given on the tests. The tests were challenging but by no means overwhelming and if you do the homework you should be well prepared.
Mina is super adorable! She is very organized and all of her notes are uploaded to bcourses after class. Sometimes she can overcomplicate certain topics but overall is very clear. If you took AP Calc AB in high school, this class will be almost entirely review. If you do the homework you will be fine on midterms and the final. Highly recommend her!
ABSOLUTELY AMAZING. So far the only math class I've taken is 1A, so I have no experience with other profs, but considering all the lukewarm to atrocious reviews other profs have, I feel very blessed to have had Mina. She's a clear lecturer, gives perfectly straightforward exams, and is quite enthusiastic and charming to boot. Easy A if you study!
HW and Qz's are worth only a small percentage. Everything is centered around 2 MT's and a Final. Tests are an accurate reflection of HW and Qz material. GSI are where you will get more intuitive examples, while Prof gives more general, abstract informal proofs, or derivationsexplanations. Responsive to questions, but GSI is main point of contact
She is an amazing professor! Her exams are straight forward, resembling much of the homework. She doesnt throw any curve balls. Highly recommend her!!
She was an amazing Math 1A professor. She was clear about what she wanted you to know and tested you as such. I had a great first math class experience here at Cal because she was willing to take the time to explain concepts and didn't assume you knew everything. (unlike some math professors here)
Do the reading before class; the way she talks is occasionally brilliant if flustered, but the problem is that most of the time her lectures are borderline incomprehensible, unless you already are acquainted with the material. She's friendly and all, but just not great at explaining anything.
Lectures are extremely confusing, making the textbook your primary instructor. Homework is interesting, but beware if you find a mistake in the solutions - it will be difficult to get it fixed. Exams are also interesting, but are based on deriving material not directly covered in class, and thus very stressful under time pressure.
As others pointed out, lectures were absolutely incomprehensible, and if someone asked a question she couldn't answer, she'd get visibly more erratic subsequently. Homework was brutal, midterms and final not so much. But really the worst thing was the unfair grade boundaries (although I'm not sure how responsible she is for that)!
Instead of being the promised introduction to QM and thermo (Bohr model, particle in a box, ideal gases), we spent 80% of our time on upper-division Quantum and the remainder awkwardly covering stat mech. Lectures were incomprehensible, and the GSI did all real work of teaching and writing problems. In sum: a disaster on par with the Hindenburg.
Lectures were borderline useless, and made the material even more confusing. I have professors in Mse who explain quantum better than she does. She's not good at answering questions, and her accent really gets in the way of clarity. The GSI also really dropped the ball on this one. Mina might get 1 out of 5 stars, but the GSI gets 0 out of 5 star
She is clear in her lectures and in what she expects you to know for the test. Her HWs are Mastering Physics, so could be easy or hard. Her tests can be easier (Midterm 1) or much harder (Final). She does focus on certain topics too much, i.e Geometric optics, and sometimes ends up making a particular topic boring. But overall, solid.
She's very flexible and accommodating (in these dire times). Lectures are clear. Tests are super straightforward. Exams were made to count for less of the final grade in the beginning of the semester because everybody made dissatisfied noises on the first day. She shortened the final bc we were assigned a late time. Super nice would recommend.
Was the best professor I could have asked for in these tough times as she kept trying her best to accommodate and changed the class structure multiple times to make sure the students were comfortable and learned the concepts instead of focusing on grades and stuff. Her lectures weren't very clear but she didnt make attendance compulsory so....
If you have never taken calc before she will definitely be no big help. Self resources like teaching yourself, reading the book and/or taking and adjunct course will save you. Her lectures are not clear. She herself is not great at answering questions or clearing confusion but she is kind and tries.
Mina is a very sweet woman, but her lectures are all over the place. It was hard to know what to learn. During COVID, she was super nice and caring. The midterms went back and forth. It was hard to understand what to know for each and what to study. 1/3 of the exams was super hard compare to the other 2/3. These 2/3 were VERY straightforward.
Prof Mina's own lectures often were confusing and riddled with jumps in logic and/or conceptual explanations and proofs, but her GSIs more than made up for it; they were very clear and covered relevant material. Her tests are extremely straightforward and and very fair. She was super caring during COVID and reduced her class difficulty, amazing!
Definitely one of the easier professors for Math 1A, from my experience. Her lectures aren't super helpful for HW/weekly quizzes, but the they're pretty easy if you've taken AP Calc/self study. Midterms fine, and the final was hard, but Prof Aganagic is def one of the most caring profs and will work with you to succeed in the class.
Professor Mina is not very organized. Her lectures were a mess (she would do her own problems wrong) and she was not good at answering questions. She often would ignore them. Reading the textbook and studying yourself is the best way to be successful in this class. However, she did let the class dictate the grading rubric which was really helpful!
Due to COVID-19, Professor was very accommodating for her students by making a balanced grading rubric. Even before, she allowed the class to have a say in it. Her lectures are very generic and aren't helpful for homework, which is what you need for quizzes and exams. If you've taken AP Calculus/IBSL/HL Math, you should be fine for most of it.
She truly cares about her students, but her lectures are awful. I never watched them because they were confusing and messy. However, her quizzes and exams are very easy if you understand the basic material. They're very straightforward. She always ask for her students' input.
Professor Mina was a wonderful prof especially through spring 2020 and all of the sudden adjustments. She really cares about her class and is very willing to listen to you. Her lectures can be confusing so it is really important to be there in person. She will also answer any math question, even if it seems silly, and explain it genuinely.
An amazing professor!! I had her during the pandemic and she made all the necessary adjustments to her course so we could do well. Her exams are fair and are based off the homework, so if you do all your homework and understand the concepts, you'll do great!! She was better than my Calc AB teacher in high school for sure.
Mina is very friendly, approachable, relatable, communicative, and flexible to student needs. The syllabus was fair. However, her lectures were hopelessly confusing and disorienting. The textbook is your best friend. I wish she talked more about her work, connected with students, and included applications... it was very cut and dry math.
I think moving from online (covid) to in person was difficult for her. However she was understanding and flexible when it came to in person lectures and online quizzes, homework is self graded. When she teaches she kind of rambles and makes it hard to follow, but an easier/clearer math professor here at Berkeley. I haven't learned much though.
Professor Aganagic has been lenient overall due to Covid. But, her lectures are all over the place and it seems as if she just summarizes the chapters in the textbook instead of breaking it down for her students. Her handwriting is also illegible. I learned the topics for this class all through online resources instead of the teacher herself.
With no background in calc, I struggled a lot. It's normally easy for me to grasp new content but the prof was too scattered and oftentimes made mistakes in her own example problems. Grading is relatively fair but be prepared to teach yourself by reading the textbook/watching yt videos. Also NOT considerate of Covid exposure. She's nice though.
She started off accomodating and considerate to COVID conditions. But then she began to neglect the online resource; she wouldn't start Zoom without informing the students, not to mention she cannot teach. I learned on my own. For our final, she's not allowing COVID positive students an alternative but instead making them take an Incomplete.
Doesnt care about her students nor does she have any tolerance for Covid-19 accommodations despite showing proof of positive results.
She was only accommodating to Covid when it benefitted her (when she was traveling) now she is not making any exceptions to people who test positive, the options are either be marked incomplete or risk the health of your peers. Also her lectures are very confusing and not helpful at all.
Really bad professor. I am usually a strong student in math and I could not even understand prof Aganagic. She would explain concepts beyond what we need to know, and miss the parts that are helpful to learn. Not accommodating AT ALL and is making us take the final in person regardless of people testing positive for Covid. Bruh :| do not take her
Her lecs are extremely confusing and hard to follow. She assigns a TON of homework and refused to allow students who were pos for covid take an online version of the final (instead they either had to get an "incomplete" grade for the class or come IN PERSON while pos for covid to take the exam). She also gets impatient when people ask questions
Prof Aganagic is making the final online when many students have notified her of their positive covid test results. She can't teach, was traveling throughout the vast majority of this semester, and is impossible to talk to. She shows no respect towards her students and is all over the place; lectures are impossible to understand and are a mess.
Mina Aganagic is definitely a good person. She is kind, however, she overcomplicates pretty much everything she teaches us and though I usually do well in math classes I am concerned I will not pass this class. It was hard for me to understand lectures and examples, I ended up teaching myself pretty much all of the material through YouTube.
I took this class after having taken AP Calculus in high school, so the things we learned in class were all pretty elementary to me. Hardly anything we learned in class was on the final, instead it was super complicated problems that I had never seen before on the homework or mentioned in class. She was always late, and very unorganized lectures.
Final was nothing like the content we've learned this semester and she was so unaccommodating to students with Covid. It was her first time teaching 16a so maybe that is why the class has been so scattered and overly complex, but she should stick to teaching her other classes that she's gotten better ratings for. She is clearly unable to adapt.
Mina was just not a good professor. She had boring lectures, I know it is math but it seriously just wasn't worth going. Additionally in lecture, her notes were illegible, a regurgitation of the textbook, and often times led to the wrong answer. Furthermore, the quizzes and final were not like the homework which she claimed they were.
The class was very difficult and lectures were very confusing through her teachings. The professor took a really long time to respond to emails as well.
The final was very difficult and did not reflect our homework. I wouldn't take this professor again because her lectures were very confusing and I ended up self teaching myself.
In person class was best. I was able to communicate with her well but many people had issues when they got covid and had to take the final exam. Homework should be done carefully. She is right about that. Also pay attention for quizzes they are important
Learned mostly through the textbook, quizzes were easy, midterm was REALLY easy, final was harder than everything else, but still not bad if you studied. Caring prof and GSIs. If you do the hw well and with the intnetion of practicing the material, you'll be totally fine. Class was NOT curved for my semseter.
Professor Mina is a very disorganized lecturer and honestly makes things more confusing. The class is graded on literally 5 things and there's no room to improve your grade if you mess up in a few areas. Homeworks take a lot of work and the exams are graded strictly. She is okay at conceptual ideas but mostly you will need to self-teach yourself.
I found Mina to be a good professor. I think she was very receptive to feedback given by students and was accommodating throughout the semester. I found her lecture style to be very helpful and easy to follow.
Such Confusing Lectures, had to learn somewhere else and A LOT OF HOMEWORK that is only worth 2% of grade.. the quiz, midterms final worth majority of your grade. The final was not similar to anything we've seen before.
Mina is not the best lecturer however, she is very clear and is very gracious with the grading bins. I ended up passing the class with 50% which is was a pleasant surprise! Tests are heavily based on the homework! We were allowed 3 cheat sheets on the final which helped a lot! Overall, really good experience! Thanks Mina!
Being a first-gen student, I was scared of calculus. However; those feelings dissipated once Professor Mina started teaching! She is such a caring professor and truly understands not everyone has the same background. Also emphasizes with students about the pandemic era! I also recommend the SLC, it helped immensely!5 quiz's (two lowest drop).2MT's.
At first, I thought this class was going to be difficult; but now, I can honestly say it was not bad. Prof. Aganagic really seems to care for students - from allowing cheat sheets for exams to biweekly, open note quizzes - this made me feel I was doing good. As long as you do your homework with time and study for exams & quizzes, you will be fine.
after struggling in high school calculus, this class was slow and clear enough that I completely understood the concepts thoroughly. the quizzes seemed easy to me, as long as you do your homework. sometimes lectures could get repetitive, but she was very receptive to feedback and made it easy to succeed.
Professor Aganagic is very accommodating and caring. She can be a little confusing during lecture, but she actively encourages people to ask questions. She genuinely cares about her students!
Mina is the only professor I've had that actually acknowledged how learning has been impacted by covid. She's very accomodating and even spends time in lecture reviewing foundational concepts. She does assign a lot of homework, but completing it every week really helps with quizzes. It's pretty doable as long as you put in effort and start early!
I believe Professor Mina is so underrated! Her lectures are very clear, thorough, and very detailed- she always tries to stop herself if she feel she's moving too quick! Although homework is kinda heavy for little grade, I find it helps a LOT for the midterms and quizzes. I actually understand calc lol, recommend HEAVILYY!
Pretty easy course as it doesn't go over a lot of content as compared to a AP Calculus AB class (if you've ever taken it and failed). Homework is really easy to complete if you're on it.
Do the homework and you'll be fine. Most if not all of quiz/midterm/final questions are very similar to the homework.
One of the best math instructors i've had - super clear and easy to understand lectures and a really well made syllabus --> I would highly reccomend!!
Had to re-take Math 1A second year because I didn't do so well the first time around (don't underestimate math at Berkeley, it truly is DIFFICULT). Mina wasn't a horrible professor, but then again she wasn't the best either. Your grade at the end of the semester basically rides on Quizzes, Midterms, and the Final.
I had to retake after dropping my 1A class last semester (DO NOT TAKE BAMLER) and I did very well for being very mediocre at math. Mina is a pretty good lecturer but more importantly her quizzes/midterms are easy if you do your hw (she also tells you the type of questions for the quiz of that week). Final mostly reflected practice exams.
As someone who had never taken Calculus before college, her class was incredibly easy. Class is test-heavy, 75% of the grade from exams. But all quizzes and exams are open books/notes and are just like the homework problems. Her lectures and notes aren't great, but reading the book and the homework can help. Overall, very caring and easy teacher.
Mina was a wonderful professor. Her course consisted of 5 quizzes (the lowest two were dropped), 2 midterms, and a final. The exams are worth a majority of your total grade but they are open note & book. She does assign a LOT of homework but it's great practice. If you just try, you'll pass!
Great professor, I retook math1A (DONT TAKE BALMER) and had lost my confidence in math but wow, did Mina help. She is very generous with grading and the exams / quizzes are open book! This class didnt take up alot of my time and it wasn't nearly as stressful as the previous semester.
Mina is amazing!!!! she is so passionate and kind and her class allows you to learn so much without all the unnecessary stress!! she helped me sharpen my math skills a lot, I absolutely loved taking her course!!
the professor does not have organized lectures and overcomplicates simple concepts (she managed to confuse the whole class with y = mx+b. we couldn't even tell that's what she was trying to review). however, she is a very lenient grader. make sure to attend discussion and do the homework. only way you'll pass the class.
I honestly think Mina was a great and passionate prof. I got a D in AP Calc AB in high school, and I never thought I could do well in math. Mina, however, takes everything STEP BY STEP, and ensures you have that foundational basis. I'm slow at grasping concepts, so her step-by-step process was great at engraining the processes into my head.
She was really empathetic of her students and overall a really caring person! I really liked the homework system she had where we graded our homeworks based on completion. The lectures were pretty cool and easy to follow which made for better understanding. She honestly made calculus really enjoyable for me!
Mina was amazing! I took AP Calc AB junior year of high school (definitely forgot most of it) and I still found this class super easy. She gives you lots of resources to do well, and all the midterms/final are open note! I was never stressed out about this class and she's also very accessible outside of class/on Ed discussion. Recommend 100%!
She is a great professor and person
