Ã?etinkaya-Rundel is a good professor. Definitely need to be on top of your work if you want to do well in the class though. There are homework and quizzes every week and the hw is time consuming. There're clicker questions for every lecture so attendance is basically mandatory. She's very helpful outside of class and respond to emails fast.

The best professor I have had at Duke! She is very good at what she does, and unlike other professors, who do not have the "best" teaching skills, she takes you through the course as easily as a HS course! I knew NOTHING about Stats going in, but now it's something I'd consider minoring in. If you do the (easy) work, you'll do great!

I had no prior statistics experience, so this class was more challenging than it should be. The curve is skewed since there will be a lot of students who've taken AP stats in the past. Rundel is very patient and clear. If you're not interested in the class, you simply won't get the grade you want. Stay on top of the work or risk falling behind.

This class is not an intro to statistics nor suitable for students with no coding experience. Lab grading is unclear, exams lack study guides, and the final project has a vague rubric with inconsistent TA guidance (this is not their fault). The instructor creates an unwelcoming environment by targeting late students. This course needs reevaluation.

Not a good teacher by any means. Lacks empathy and is condescending. Labs take long and the grading is so harsh. You're not really learning. No quality study material. Long story short, she's an expert, but some experts aren't meant to be teachers. I hope she reevaluates her behavior/class and Duke reevaluates her.

Mine is by far the most heartless, condescending, rude and irresponsible teacher at Duke. Please do not take this class. Labs are arbritrary, TAs are not on the same page, course lacks ANY type of guidance and Mine is overall just a horrible lecturer and has no empathy for anyone. You might think im saying this because of the grade but be warned.

It's unfortunate that an intro-level class causes so much stress. As a senior pre-med STEM major, I've found that at Duke, effort typically translates into grades I'm proud of. In this class, however, condescending remarks deter engagement, and unclear grading criteria for labs (worth 35%) add frustration, making the experience discouraging. Avoid!

Honestly all these bad reviews here aren't the real issue with sta199. Yes she can be a bit condescending, but who cares, take the high road. The real issue here is this class just doesn't teach stats. It's a coding class for R, plain and simple. Never learned central limit theorem or odds or t scores, threw in Conf Ints but no real interpretation.

Very disappointed in this class. I was required to take this class for my major, and was genuinely interested in a field I knew nothing about. Mine is fine, everyone here is butthurt. This course is very watered down for all of the humanities majors that need it for their major. Mine's lectures are not very engaging, but data science is not of interest to the majority of the class. The grading is all by TAs and seems overly subjective. Overall, the work is doable and the class is fine.
