Kinda hard to understand
No Comments
He's a decent guy. Despite his accent he is still understandable. The material is harder and more math based than the other professors. Take good notes and do the practice problems, he never tests on anything except concepts in the lectures. When confronted with problems he is pretty helpful. He underlines and mispells a lot, funny guy.
Teacher sucks
Funny chinese man
He is funny by nature and does a lot of things in class that will make you laugh, such as mispell and pronounce everything wrong, but not to the point where it messes you up...He is a great teacher and gives many examples, if you get those and do practice problems and understand both, you have an automatic A!!!
He knows what he is talking about, just has a few problems with saying it although you can understand what he is saying. He is incredibly funny though. I just wish he'd give a few minutes in class to have students do problems and then have him do it on the board. He kinda does the problems by himself really quickly and makes things like "What?"
Dr. XU is a good teacher, just take your notes and you're ok. Don't bother doing every practice problem unless you are having trouble - they are very redundant. He gives plenty of opportunities to laugh when he misspells words or says "This is easier in Chinese" after mispronouncing something. Good professor. Quizzes and tests are fair and easy
Ming Ming is a really good teacher, he has a chinese acent but very understandable. He knows his stuff and everything on the test is covered in lecture. He's also pretty funny. First day of class he said, "As you can tell, I am chinese."
Sucks
YUCK!!! Hard to understand. TA for lab was even worse. Had to drop the class and change my major cause I was failing so bad. Do not recommend!
Good ol' MingMing's only spoken English each lecture is what he prepares on his little yellow sheet. He only know what English to say due to his little yellow sheet. Ask him a question in class, and after a few horrible attempts at English, he says come to his office 4 stories above our current location to get the answer, because I can'tspeak ENG
at first i thought he was a good teacher even tho his accent makes him hard to understand, but the only reason i thought that is because i already knew the material. once u get into more difficult material u will be lost. he cannot teach at all and always has to make things more difficult than they already are. he tries real hard but still stinks
If you have a decent background in chemistry Dr. Xu's class really is not that bad. However, if you have never taken chemistry before avoid him at all cost.
Not the best chemistry teacher, but I found this class to be extremely easy, as he told you the day before the test exactly what would be on it and how many of each type of question would be one it. The quizzes were just as easy. Really easy A if you showed up and listened.
Go to class because he tells you exactly what is going to be on the test, and if you have a question he'll pretty much tell you the exact questions that will be on the test if you go to his office.
My first CHEM class, after about the first test, was not able to learn the material well from the way he taught the class. Unless you have a fairly good background with CHEM, I would not recommend taking this professor.
Dropped the class due to the professors unability to teach it. And the TA was twice as bad. I really don't think I heard him say one word in english. Kinda sad when one professor and one class can change your mind about your entire career. DO NOT RECOMMEND!!!
Dr. Xu can be hard to understand sometimes, but he always prepares you for his tests. He always lets you know exactly what you are going to be tested on. The tests are simple, but the final was harder because it is made by the department, not Dr. Xu.
I seriously hate this guy. Averaged an 98.5 on the 4 test and the **** gives me a B in the class. Don't take him.
Are you kidding me? This guy is rediculous. I cant understand a word he says, let alone read his handwriting. He writes so small and underlines and puts boxes around everything he writes down. I went to class and still barely managed to pull out a "C" I strongly reccomend you do not take him!
I loved him!!He is very clear and to the point and wants you to succeed. He also tells you what is on your test(ex. so many of this type of problem on test). If you study what he reviews before the test you will do fine in his class.I enjoyed him enough to take his Chem. 116 class.I strongly recommend him to anyone!!
Doesn't explain things very well. Even though he is foreign, he's not too hard to understand. Class material is very hard. Will require lots of studying. He let's you know what is on the test question by question.
If you are not good at chemistry, dont take him. His English is easy to understand, but he goes fast and it is easy to become lost while scribbling down his notes as fast as you can. If you don't understand something you will be lost from that point on. His teaching skills arent the best, but I'm sure he is still better than other chem teachers.
I'm sure he's amazing at chemistry, but he's a horrible professor
I think He is an absolutely amazing professor, the people that are putting bad posts are the people that do not pay attention or do not go to class. He has a slight accent but is extremely understandable. He explains the material extremely well and moves at a good pace. The day before the test he does a great review. Highly Recommend Mingming!!!!
Mingming is not hard to understand even though he has a slight accent. All you have to do is go to class and take your notes. Any questions you have he answers, all you have to do is go to his office. Before every test you review and he tells you how many of each question will be on the test.
Mingming Xu is very straightforward, but his tests always get the worst of everyone. Everyone always ends up walking out of the test room thinking "I aced it!" when they really just got a <70.

He's an exellent teacher.
Mingming is hard to understand sometimes. He pronounces certain words different. Instead of three he says tree and instead of moles he says mores. Its pretty funny sometimes because he can be rude.
His tests make you feel like you did awesome, but you usually don't I always understood what we did in class but did terrible on the tests. He was still pretty fair and gave bonus a few times. He's not too bad compared to the rest of the Chem dept. I'm taking him for 116 next semester
I barely went to class, boring. I got an A,my friend failed. If u don't know chem, dont take him.Compared to my teacher in h.s.,MingMing sucks.I might have hated it more b/c I got stuck taking it but he doesn't make the material easy to learn. The tests were easy if you know your stuff,I didn't open the txtbk & then couldn't sell it back.Take Tinsley
Lectures were to the point, but boring. The tests were only from the notes. He doesn't teach you anything you won't need for the tests. He is more than willing to help you outside of class if you need it. I thought it was an easy course.
I liked him as a teacher. People say that he's really hard, but the truth is, they're lazy. He's a pretty good teacher as long as you dont mind the slight accent
Overall a pretty good teacher. Will answer questions in class and especially during office hours. Tests are not to hard but you will have to study and do the homework
He is a pretty decent guy. His test seem easy, but unless you really know it, you probably didn't do that great. He goes into more depth than other professors. I liked him better than the other chem professors.
You think you do well on the test, but then end up getting just a fair grade. Answers that include anticipated mistakes are included as choices. Helpful at office hours, but sometimes doesn't get info across to students well. Makes many mistakes but he is a nice guy.
Dr. Xu really cares about his students, and he trys hard to explain the material effectively. However, sometimes he does not explain key chemistry concepts thoroughly enough. Dr. Xu's class will teach you to rely heavily on both note taking and book use to do well.
Took Chem 115 in summer school, do not do that. MingMing was a very good teacher tons of material very quickly covered. Take notes, study alot, read the book twice do all the problems, then you can get an A. Not an easy class esp in summer school. I will take Chem 116 during the year with him. Loved the accent, understandable.
Hard to understand and doesn't answer questions!!!
He's really funny.
mingming is a baller
Very good
Great teacher, serious, but knows how to teach, hope to take him in future whenever possible.
He teaches quite well, and makes it fairly easy to understand. One of the tough parts about it is that his tests only have 20 questions on them, and they tend to cover a wide range of topics, making it very hard to remember everything.
Difficult test. He will teach you though. If you ask him questions he will answer them and talk to you until you understand. If you want to learn, take this class. However, if you are a bad test taker. do not take this class.
How can anyone possibly write anything bad about this guy? He is a great teacher, and test material is based solely on the lectures. He is very helpful and knowledgeable on the subject. He's pretty funny, too. Just come to class, take notes, study the notes, and you're set. Definetely made me like chemistry more--he made it easy.
Dr. Xu is an awesome teacher! I do not like chemistry at all but he made the subject very easy to follow and even interesting at times. He is very funny! The tests are right from class notes, so as long as one goes to class, it is not very hard to do well. He is very clear and easy to understand. I would recommend him to everyone!!
Good teacher even though he can be hard to understand. Demanding on-line homework and tough tests.
he is the best....I realy mean that...he knows everything about chemistry..I took him for chem 115..Exams are not that hard.my average in the 4 exams was 88 and I got A in that class.Attendance is realy important..do good in lab final in his exams and you should be fine...I really recommond him
He was good at chemistry.. but wasn't good at teaching it. Teaches the easy stuff but when it comes to homework and tests it's more complex. If you don't know chemistry very well don't take him. You'll only be lost.
I actually thought he was one of the better chem teachers. Everyone says he is awful, but I understood chemistry better when I took his class.
Pretty easy to understand, personable, helpful, and knows what hes talking about.
Really smart man, but would only teach the basics in class. Homework and tests a lot harder. You had to do the homework to understand the tests though. The final really screwed me over.
hard to understand sometimes, but still a good teacher
He's very helpful. Sometimes he's hard to understand. Class is a lot more math based than anything. Homework's easy... but tests are very complex. I wouldn't reccomend.
Class is just difficult. Lectures are very boring. Homework is 30x easier than the tests. With lots of studying barely managed a C
excellent teacher, always helpful when i have questions, his office hours were a lil off with my schedule, easy to understand him, he barely has an accent for a chinese man, tests are fair, his study guides r accurate, and tests r not a shock when u get them, take nots, read book, and do online homework, and u will get out with a decent grade!
pretty easy. if you do the online homework and pay attention to what he says in lecture you will be fine
He isn't hard to understand at all, just a small accent (he sorta says "more" instead of "mole"). Chemistry is really hard for me but I thought he did a pretty good job. I found the tests easier than the homework. He does not go fast at all in class which is nice. Go to class and pay attention if chem does not come naturally to you.
I absolutely hated this class. I did not take much Chem in high school. I figured if I studied I would do fine in this class. I guess that wasn't the case... It was nice to have the online homework, it was easy and boosted my grade. Labs were fairly easy. Tests were difficult for me. It seemed like the way he worded the questions was odd.
This class was horrible. The homework was nothing like the tests. Half the class is destined to fail. I know he is a smart man but his ability to connect with a student and teach them is lacking. Nice guy but poor professor.
Dr. Xu is amazing! He is extremely fair on his tests and always has a review class before the exams so that you know exactly what will be on tests. I studied straight from his notes and did the online homework and thought the tests were simple. I didn't even have to open the text book. He was willing to help anyone outside of class too. Loved him!
Dr. Xu is a great teacher! His accent is easy to understand and there are never any surprises on tests if you study his class notes. He is always willing to help you if you need help with anything. You should seriously "sink" about taking him because he is awesome!!
Great teacher. Go to class and pay attention and its not bad. Never has a random question on tests, and has a review class before every test.
Mingming is very straight forward and keeps no secrets. Tests are challenging but if you understand the concepts, you will definitely be alright. Overall good teacher
The lectures can get boring, MingMing just talks and talks and writes on the board and never tries to grab yuor attention. The test are challenging but its a challenging course. Best teacher there is for this level class.
Dr XU is amaizing. i barely pass my chem 115 and i was sure to even fail chem 116 but no..i'm making an A. he is very clear ad his notes are all you need to succeed just come to class and study his note you won't get less than an A. i'm so thankful to him.i learned so much in that class.he is the best .
Mingming was a great professor and made the final very easy. Much better professor than the other 116 professors. His tests are fair and he always gives at least one example problem during lectures that will relate to the exam. Always available outside of class for assistance. Highly recommend this guy.
great chemistry teacher, willing to go out of his way to help you anytime you need it as long as you let him know...highly recommended
Mingming was a good chem professor compared to the other options. The tests are hard because they're multiple choice so even if you work the process out right, one wrong number and you lose 5 pts. The final was hard as well, but it's a hard class so that's expected. He was helpful when asked during office hours. I enjoyed his humor.

This was the worst professor I have ever had. Seriously. He was rude, not helpful to explain things that were unclear and made the tests way harder than they needed to be.
Wonderful teacher if you are looking to understand chemistry. His exams are tricky but if you know the material its a walk in the park. He is very helpful
Mingming was a great professor. The weekly homework was long, but taught me everything I needed for the tests. As long as you listen to the lectures and take notes, and go to labs, you will not get lower than a B.
He is a great teacher, and I use the word teacher over professor because he is very capable of teaching his students unlike some professors. He is extremely fair when it comes to grading. One bad exam won't kill you, but you must study and go to class. I am taking him again for Chem 116.
VERY straight forward with lecture material and ALWAYS available for extra help. YOU HAVE TO KEEP UP. if you don't you will fail. it's a very hard class but he is the best teacher you could have out of them. the tests are very hard but you just have to keep up. go to the TLC, meet with him, do everything you can and youll pass.
I had him for the STP program at WVU, and he was a splendid and excellent teacher. He made us work hard, but if you needed it, he was very helpful. He speaks English quite well for a Chinese man as well.
He is the best teacher ive had. his examples and still of teaching make everything understandable
Dr. Xu is horrible. I ended up dropping his class. I tried to contact him and would never hear back. The homework, lectures, and book did not prepare me for the tests. The material on the tests were extremely hard even if you understood the content.
Mingming is the best chem teacher ive ever had! He always makes class fun with his examples. His accent makes it all the more entertaining. Although his class is probably one of the harder chem classes, you will benefit from taking him. He is always available and willing to help. Go to class, study notes, & do the homework and you will easily pass.
funny but at the same time is serious about the material.
Dr. Xu was a great professor. He was helpful outside of class and his lectures actually taught the material. I would take him for 115 and 116 if you can. Old practice tests really help too!
GREAT TEACHER!!! highly recommend him, try to get old practice exams, they will help you study a lot!!! if you dont have those, check your notes, if you can do the problems in your notes, YOUR GOOD!! I wasnt the best at chemistry but after a semester with mingming I was golden!!! the final is rough, but managable if you study, got an A in class
Great teacher, received a B & complained; looking back it's clear that I was being a complete wuss. It comes down to STUDYING. Wait until organic chem to complain. You're not going to become a doctor if you're dropping 115 because you think the teacher isn't good enough; it's your fault. Any chem115/116 prof will seem difficult at the time.
Class is pretty hard, you must study a lot. Mingming is very helpful and a very good teacher. Love him!
Don't let people fool you...if you know chemistry, you will do well in his class, if you dont, he will leave you in the dust and never think twice...avoid if you can
Dr. Xu is by far the greatest chem professor I've had. He explains things so well and helps you make sense of all the topics covered in the class. Dr. Xu has a great personality and cares about his students. Also he encourages students to visit him during his office hours. I have been there many times and have shared many laughs. I definitely would
I LOVED MingMing. His tests come directly from the notes. He is always willing to help his students out. He also has a great sense of humor. One of the best chemistry professors I have had to date.
Mingming is a good teacher. He is funny in class but sometimes the class is very dull. Material is easy for a few months then gets very difficult. He is always willing to help anyone outside of class. His exams come directly from the notes, but are still rather difficult, especially exams 3 and 4. Its a lot of work for an A, but a B/C is attainable
AWESOME!!! I loved Ming Ming as a teacher, he's very helpful to his students. The class itself is boring, but his tests are very doable. He has a great sense of humor too! He doesn't take crap from lazy people either, so don't try to mess with him.
Xu was one of the best professors I ever had. He does his best to make chemistry interesting. He actually takes the time to fully explain a topic so it's understandable and test you purely on notes. Great, funny teacher, just be prepared having to deal with chemistry as a freshmen, he may be the best but chem 155 is a hard class as it is.
Mingming is the best professor I have. He makes funny jokes all the time and makes things easy to understand. Take him for sure.
Dr. Xu has been my favorite professor so far. Chemistry is not an easy subject by any means, but he is willing to help you in any way that he can. He has a good sense of humor. He has an accent like everyone would expect, but he is very easy to understand.
Didn't teach everything we needed to know during semester to complete homework. Wasn't effective teaching.
Hard, but good
Great Teacher. Would recommend. He keeps the class attentive and does almost every exam problem type on the board during lecture.
Very helpful, always available during office hours, overall good teacher.
Mingming was an awesome teacher. Sometimes he would try to be really serious, but he would usually try to make a joke or something during class to keep you interested. A little hard to understand at first but you catch on quick.
Dr. Xu was an amazing professor. He was always very helpful and kept class interesting. He reminded me of my high school Chemistry teacher, which was great. His teaching style is very easy to follow and I thought he was very easily understood. Definitely would recommend him to anybody taking Chemistry.
Good teacher. Knows what he's talking about and gives good notes. Tests are a little difficult, but if you study really hard for them and know the examples that he provides you should be fine. Always very helpful and understanding. Was always willing to help at office hours, I recommend this teacher.
Professor Xu was absolutely amazing. I learned so much in this class I would have never wanted another teacher. He was so good as explaning things. His tests are ONLY what he goes over in class; he won't give anything he hasn't taught. However, he loves to try to trick you so make sure you know common mistakes that students make. go to class!
Excellent teacher. Be careful because of his wittiness. Tends to trick you on questions on exams..Study study study and you'll do fine. Never read over questions.. Also, handwriting is sloppy so sit close to the board so it's easily understood.. Lastly, beware of WILEY!! Has nothing to do with what is taught in class!!!
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I have attended EVERY SINGLE CLASS and it has only hurt my grade. everything taught in class is negated by most exams. You're better off taking Chigwada for Chem 116. I have not once done so poorly in a college classroom. I have an average 3.6 and this class brought it down to a 3.3... I repeat DO NOT TAKE HIM..
Ming Ming was a great professor! He tells you the information that you need for the tests, you just have to make sure you listen and attend class. Granted Chem 117 is not an easy course, so you have to put a lot of hours into studying and practicing. Ming Ming was always willing to assist or tutor during office hours!
This man is great. Chemistry is a very difficult course so no matter who you get it will be challenging, but MingMing does a great job of teaching everything.
I would definitely recommend Dr.Xu. He is always willing to help students and is very easy to understand. His tests are very similar to the problems he does in lecture. Favorite professor so far!
Very Good professor. You can tell he spends a lot of time preparing his lectures and his exams closely resemble lecture material. His tests are difficult but his great teaching makes them easily manageable. Also DO NOT be worried about his speech when you hear his name. His English is VERY good.
He is a terrible professor. He presents relatively easy questions in class, but make no mistake, that is no indicator of exam questions. Every question will be an attempt to screw you over in every possible way. His speech is not the clearest and he often misuses words leading to confusing lectures and difficulty understanding the course material.
The material is really tough, no matter who you have. I think he gives amazing lectures, though. If you go to class, you will really learn something. A lot of students feel his tests are too hard, but I didn't feel this way. I think if you put the work in, you will get a decent grade in the class and learn a lot more than with other professors.
Although his english is not hard to understand, his teaching is. All of the work is done on the chalk board where as all the other teachers give power points. Very difficult class.
awesome professor. he knows exactly what he is teaching and knows the material very well. the professors make this class harder than it really is to scare everyone. just get your achievement points and you can retake the required tests as many times as needed. i suggest that you DO NOT drop this class. the finals are very easy to get your points
To pass this class you need to go over problems on your own time. Xu is a great guy who you can tell cares about his students. Sometimes he is hard to understand but if i were going into higher levels of chemistry i would take him again in a heartbeat.
Great guy and given his extremely Asian name isn't all that hard to understand, if you go to class you'll pass the class
I took Dr. Xu for both Chem 115 and 117. He may be slightly tougher than the other professors but you really learn the material and the final is easier because of it. His grading standards are clear. He may not come off as super friendly but he's open to questions and loves to see that students are trying. If you work, you can get a decent grade.
The secret to passing 115 is to take very good notes and copy verbatim what Xu writes on the board. Problems on exams come straight from the notes and online youtube videos he goes through step by step. Somewhat pretentious but you find hat with most chemistry professors. I enjoyed his lectures and how easy he made topics to understand. Take him!!
Mingming has probably taught me the most this past semester. If you miss class, there is no catching up. Tests are extremely difficult, but they are fair. He never tests students on material that he didn't personally go over in class. Do your Aleks homework, that 10% is a life saver!
Mingming is tough, but fair. By far the best chem teacher at WVU as far as I've heard. His lectures are clear and he tries very hard to make the material understandable. He is funny every now and then but very busy. His English is very good, so don't worry about not understanding him.
Dr. Xu's chem class is a class where you have to take great notes. His tests are extremely hard. He doesn't use PowerPoint. Everything is done on a chalk board so make sure to get a decent seat early. He is a nice guy who helps if you ask. I got a B in Ratcliff's 115 course and dropped this one. I would recommend taking her. Her notes on eCampus.
This guy is just out to trick you on exams. Its a set up for failure. He does this to his Chem 115 and 116 classes because and I quote " one of you guys might be a scientist with NASA and need to be meticulous so you don't kill someone." Stay away for chem 115 and 116. I hear hes great for higher chem though.
By far, the best professor I've ever come by. Very difficult. VERY difficult exams. But he prepares you for all of it. Attend class, do the homework, study for the exams, and you'll get an A. He rewards the students that work hard and that's all there is to it. Incredibly fair, super helpful when I go to his office. Took him both semesters of chem.
Mingming is an excellent chemistry professor and tries very hard to communicate the material to students. As is expected, chemistry is a very difficult course so you HAVE to study. His tests are thorough and quite difficult but manageable of you study well in advance. Mingming frequently cracks jokes during class and is willing to help anyone.
His class was much easier than my high school chemistry class, but I think Professor Xu was more thorough in teaching the material. I would definitely take him again, just wished he taught organic chem!
Very clear and funny with purpose. "You put the toaster in the tub with the fat guy; he's gonna get toasted". GO TO CLASS. Or else the homework is impossible. But if you do go? You will learn more in 1 class than a whole year of high school Chemistry.
Hardest class ever!
The class was very difficult, and the tests are mind blowing, but if you're willing to work for your grade and seek help when you need it, he's always there to help and there's no reason you should fail. Chemistry is tough, there's no way around that, but he explains everything very well and he makes the class a little more bearable.
Dr. Xu is an excellent teacher, however that does not mean his class is easy. You absolutely must study for every exam. When you feel like you have studied enough, study a little bit more. His exams are extremely difficult, however he prepares you for the departmental final the best. Talking with friends in other classes has shown me he is the best
Mingming was a great teacher, but his tests were awful. Expect major trick questions!
IF you hate writing note each class DON'T TAKE HIM, his explanation is good but he doesn't have lecture note and you have to take notes each class to get a good grade or you won't pass.
If you have to take CHEM 115 or 116, take it with Dr. Xu. He is really fair, funny, takes no nonsense, and wants you to pass. For exams, study with the YouTube problem-solving links he puts up. They help immensely!! You will pass if you go to class, take notes, and repeatedly go over practice questions from the notes and homework.
Mingming is a hard but good teacher. I dont recommend him if you have never taken Chem before. He tends to be unclear on many topics. No need for a book. His tests are very challenging, they require a lot of study time. He does make jokes in class, which are usually funny. Nice guy too!
Mingming really knows what he is talking about and will help if you ever need anything. If something is confusing, talk to him after class or go to his office hours and he will help as much as possible. Has a good sense of humor and you must go to his lectures.
He was the greatest professor I have ever had at WVU. He helped me so much throughout my undergrad years and helped me get into medical school. I am so grateful I had the privilege of having Dr. Xu. I highly recommend him to any student.
Had a friend in the chem class taught by another professor and he didn't have half as hard of a time that I did. HW you get 3 tries and then it's wrong. The other class had unlimited attempts. Chem itself is a hard topic. Mingming goes over the material fine but when it comes to tests they are nothing like anything he has gone over. Class avgs low
Incredibly smart man. Not a good teacher or person in general. Tests will murder you. Avoid at all cost.
He is horrible. Unless you are naturally gifted, get ready to work. He is just rude. I went for help and he turned me away saying I didn't study enough, to go home and try harder without even talking to me. I studied extremely hard and still never understood him. He deliberately tries to trick you on his tests. Even the chem tutors cant help you.
Mingming is not the easiest professor but he is one that you will learn so much from. Do not and I repeat DO NOT scan in for class and then leave because he will catch you. If you study, pay attention, and take good notes you should be fine. No issues with understanding him. I am taking Chem 116 now from him and I have an A so far.
Prof Xu was a very hard professor and gave very detailed lectures. His exams were harder than often necessary and told us on the first day of class that it was a weed out class. I would not suggest taking him if you have another option.
Dr. Xu wants you to pass his class. He ALWAYS points out everything he will try to trip you up on during the exams, so there is no reason you should fail them. Personally, his teaching style is not for me. He is a story teller and can take a whole class to go over one topic. If that kind of teacher benefits you I would definitely recommend!
I took Mingming for both 115 and 116! He is a great teacher but his tests are super hard. Attendance is mandatory or you will fail the class. He is usually available for help outside of class, but sometimes going to his office hours are not the best idea if you ask dumb questions.
Definitely have to work for the grade you want. If your not a good test taker than his class is probably not for you since most of the class rests on your test grades. But he is very straightforward with his notes and what you have to study for the test. I had him for both semesters and the work load is manageable.
Professor Xu is a 'no-nonsense' teacher but he is good at explaining difficult concepts and does plenty of example problems. If you go to class and actively take notes you will learn a lot. His grading of homework and tests is consistent and fair. His English is easy to understand.
Mingming is the best! His English is very easy to understand and he is hilarious. His lectures make mostly everything easy to understand. TAKE TAKE TAKE!
prepares you for the final. he has the hardest exams, but all of his questions come from your notes and examples. do the practice exams, do all of your homework, go to class, and GET HELP when you need it. if you work hard you could get a b
Best for 115! Teaching style is analogy/story heavy, but examples directly address common mistakes. Explanations are mainly verbal, write down what he says as well as whats on the board. Tells you how topics will show up on an exam as well as ways to study/practice. Doesn't want students to fail, but has no sympathy if you don't put in any effort.
This class was a lot of work with the homework, lab, and tests. Chemistry isn't my best focus but I came out of CHEM 115 & 116 with a B. He was pretty funny during lectures. He expects achievement from his students. He is quite fair.
I tried to email him 5 times throughout the semester and didn't get one response.
Very old fashioned and teaches every concept in the hardest way possible. I think people who love chemistry would really enjoy his class but for those who don't like chem or aren't good at it do NOT take this class. When a sub explained a concept to us that he couldnt the whole class applauded her if that puts things into perspective.
He likes to put hard exam question, the class average in the first exam was great 75, however, the second exam it was 55. must of my friends in the university told me to take with another professor, Each exam worth 12% so if you fail one exam it will hurt you alot. Moreover, the homework worth only 8% final exam worth 25 .
amazing professor, now he do the teach a very well A++
I would highly advise against taking his class. He taught all of the material in the hardest possible way. Many of my friends were in the same class with a different professor and they were taught the material in an easier fashion. If you do take his class, make sure that you attend every lecture because you will be very behind.
Taught the material in the hardest possible way. I had to have students in the same class with different professors teach me the material because the way he explains the concepts is confusing. I like chemistry and he made the class unbearable. Attendance is mandatory not only for your grade but if you miss a class you will be behind in the material
If you are not naturally gifted in chemistry, this class is probably not for you. Lecture material easy to understand, uses good analogies to explain concepts. Tests are often much, much harder than any practice material/homework/examples from class---- practice tests given did not help. Class average was around 60 & there was no curve.
If you visit him outside of class he doesn't really give advice, if he does he finds multiple ways to explain the same piece of advice. Doesn't put stuff online. You won't know your grade until the end of the semester, so you won't know what to focus on. Tests don't line up with lectures or homework. Do yourself a favor and don't take Mingming.
In his lectures, Dr. Xu takes his time and does not rush through examples, though he sometimes rambles a bit too much. The exams, however, are miserable. They are much more in depth than the information from lecture and do not really line up with the homework. This class is much too difficult and tricky for an entry level class.
Pretty funny and entertaining during lectures. The exams, however, are often much more complex and difficult than the lectures. You need to study so much. The homework doesn't always line up with the lectures either. Kind of intimidating to talk to one on one. The students I know that had the other chem 115 professors got much higher grades.
He is very entertaining during lecture, and really tries to explain concepts in simple manners. He also has a youtube channel with sample problems if you feel like you need extra practice or more exposure to some of the concepts in lecture.
Ming Ming knew what he was talking about if you went to see him one on one. He got off topic a lot and only gave previous semester exams to study for current exams, with no solutions to the problems or even the correct answers. He taught different ways to solve calculations from other professors and I thought his way was more complicated & confusin
He is a good teacher when it comes to lecture. He goes over examples in class and will answer questions in class. He even has examples online on his youtube channel. His major downside is his exams. They are very tricky and far too in-depth. I failed 2 out of the 3 exams despite heavy studying. I only passed because of the standardized final exam.
Overall, he is a great teacher. I have never learned more in a science class before having him. I found the material to be very interesting, especially when he would use a plethora of analogies for it to make sense. He is very knowledgeable and very helpful. However, if you plan to skip class, make sure you ask a friend for notes or you will fail.
During lecture he doesn't explain topics clearly and while doing examples he flies through them making it hard to understand how to solve them!
mingming is a very talented professor, I loved his lecture. if you wanna do well on the test you gotta study for it.
He will only write notes out on the board and will not post notes online so you need to show up to class if you want to pass. You need to study if you want to get a good grade as his tests are harder than the other 116 professor. Ask around for more practice tests as he gives you one per exam. If you work hard and pay attention, you'll be okay.
He makes the tests way harder than they need to be. I wouldnt take him.
Xus class is very lecture-driven. His exams are not too difficult. However, if youve never taken a chemistry course before it might be difficult because he expects you to already know some things. Online homework due every week. His English is easy to understand. If you study your notes thoroughly, then you should pass his class.
Chem 115 is hard enough but when the professor doesn't care about anything but his reputation in the school and is disappointed in the whole class for a 70 test average, it makes it even harder. He wouldn't let us know what our grades were at midterm and thought it was crazy for us to ask him for those grades. Get out of this class while you can!!
If you do not have any chemistry experience before him, this class would be very hard. He usually just uses a few examples on the board. He talks a very long time instead of just getting to the point. Lectures 90% of the time go over the scheduled class time.
Ming Ming is difficult to understand, teaches class at though you already know chemistry. Furthermore, his test averages are far lower than other chemistry professors at WVU and he WILL NEVER CURVE. Accent can be hard to understand.
Dr. Xu is a pretty good professor. However, he doesn't make much of an effort to help the students understand the subject beyond presenting it in class. You ask a question and his response is generally "you should know this from class". He's an alright guy, very funny, but make plans to go to tutoring if you want any help outside lecture.
Dr. Xu really cares about his students. He knows what he's talking about, and I think he explains everything really well. The most impressive thing for me has been how he has handled the move to online classes during the COVID-19 crisis. He wants to make sure that everyone still has a fair chance at passing the class, and his efforts show.
I think he has a great knowledge of chemistry and presents it well. GO TO CLASS. If you miss class you will fall behind. If you do practice problems, weekly quizzes, and read the notes you will be prepared for the test. He is helpful ones you get past his jokes and sarcasm.
Do NOT take. Mingming is very disrespectful to his students. He will not hesitate to call you out in front of the entire class and will not go easy on you. If you anger this man, watch out. Assigns homework that does not help at all. If you ask him for help, you better make sure you have tough skin or else he will tear you apart.
Dr. Xu is a great guy. He tries to be funny in class which makes the lectures less boring. Content is annoying and its hard to pay attention during the lecture but the class wasn't that bad.
This is definitely a class that you'll have to put effort into, but as long as you go to lecture, take notes, and study after class you will be fine. He is very good at explaining topics thoroughly, and from my experience the students that disliked him/did bad in the class did not put in the effort to learn the material. Very funny and a nice guy.
Love this man so much. Hes so funny and truly cares about his students. However, if you dont put effort in, you wont do well in the class. He is more than willing to help.
Dr. Xu is a great professor!!! Sit near the front since his lectures are on the chalkboard. His lectures cover everything you need to know and he provides exam like examples. The material on ecampus is helpful for the tests. This class is fairly easy if you GO TO CLASS, pay attention, and study before the test. He speaks very good English as well.
Dr. Xu is very good at explaining hard concepts in an easy way. Definitely go to the lectures. He's actually pretty funny, but serious all at the same time. The tests are a little harder than the examples in class. Make sure you study conceptual stuff and the math rather than just the math.
Professor Xu gives good lectures on everything you need for Chem116; there was never a need to read the textbook (although it's free/online and can't hurt). Definitely write down every bullet point and example problem, they're perfect study tools for the exams. Study hard for the exams and you should pass with no problem (with good prior chem).
The hardest thing I have ever done and would not recommend for future students. Makes everything 10x harder than it should and classwork is not helpful when it comes exam time. There is no point to even study because no matter how hard you try you will still fail. First day you will meet him he's great just very hard as a professor.
Ming Ming Xu is a good dude but should not be a college professor. He does not give good notes, they are all over the place, and does not explain things thoroughly. He gets very off track very quick and I had a very stressful time in this class. He does not give practice problems or practice exams and flies through recitations with no hesitation.
He was very nice, a good person, and clearly passionate about chemistry but very disorganized as a teacher. The homework didn't match up with the test. We would cover topics on assignments after we've taken an exam on them. Lectures were very long, disorganized, and messy. His accent was never a problem.
While some of the issues are because of hybrid courses, I still do not like Dr. Xu. He can be an unsympathetic jerk. His lecture videos are torture; he pauses between his phrases and its unbearable to listen to for 3 hours a week. I have just fallen behind and taught myself what I need to know for the homework and quizzes. Take someone else!
Professor Xu knows what he is talking about and I think he forgets some people aren't naturally gifted in chem sometimes. The homework system on ALEKS is stupid it doesn't even line up with material and it won't let you move on so I have been stuck on week 5 all semester. Tests are insanely hard so go get help or you will not pass. A "C" is OKAY!
Easy to understand, makes class interesting, solid lectures I do feel like if you don't understand a concept in the way he initially explains it, he's not that great at explaining things in a different way, but those situations are few and far between
Lectures are very boring and often off-topic, minimal to no opportunities given to practice new concepts, and tests are unnecessarily hard. His class consists of a 50-minute video, of that 20 is spent off-topic, 20 is poorly explaining a topic, and 10 is giving one example of how to produce answers (that's the only time you'll see how to do it).
If you need practice in order to learn a subject this class is not for you. He only gives out video lectures that are an hour long each and expects you to know everything. He is very rude if you ask questions and doesnt respond to emails. For the recitation sheets you get 4 questions that dont go over every topic. I would not recommend him.
Xu was honestly not the best teacher. He was definitely passionate and cared about his students, but wasnt great at explaining concept topics to kids that have never learned them. I would avoid taking him if you could, at least online. Im not sure if the class would have been different in person, but this was not an easy class.
Professor Xu was absolutely terrible. He was rude to his students and many were afraid to even ask him for help. His lectures did not line up with the timeline of the lab class that is taken along with the CHEM 115 course. His lectures were not clear and concise. His exams were quite difficult and felt unfair.
AVOID XU AT ALL COSTS. I study hard & have As in every class but his. His lectures are decent, but his exams are much harder than quiz, lecture, and practice problems-- even outside practice rarely helps. He might be better for lab, but he's pre-med student's worst nightmare for lecture. Your only hope to revive your GPA is the final. Good luck...
Worst teacher I ever had. I thought I was going to like him a lot when I first walked into his class, but I truly do regret not switching out when I had the chance. The man doesn't teach and his exams are impossible. I wouldn't recommend him to anyone. His class is a horrible, horrible experience. Also, the Aleks program sucks.
I'm really disappointed to write this because he seemed like a great professor on the first day. Nothing could be farther from the truth. He has no problem with exam scores averaging in the 60s and his lectures are not great. There is some extra credit which helps, but not much. I would highly recommend switching out if you can :(
I consider Dr. Xu as a good professor. He always responded to my emails in a timely manner and answered any questions I had to the best of his ability. He was very good at making hard concepts simple to understand. To succeed in his class you just have to put in the work. I look forward to having him next semester.
Dr. Xu's class requires you to really work for your grade. The majority of your grade comes from 3 challenging exams (15% each) and the cumulative final (25%) so good notes and STUDYING are critical. Dr. Xu's lectures are informative but are not enough alone to prepare you for exams. Quizzes and homework require you to buy TopHat and ALEKS.
This class definitely requires a good bit of work on your own. If you did not watch the lecture videos he sent out weekly, good luck doing well in the class. Many of the exam questions were similar to questions reviewed in lecture and quizzes. He made exam review videos to discuss the most missed questions which definitely helped for the final.
The exams are hard. I got a 60 on the first one, but was still able to make an A in the class. The final is easier than the rest of the exams, so it is a grade booster. His lectures are really helpful. The only think I didn't like was the Aleks homework.
He's a nice guy but you don't get many assignments to save your grade. His tests are hard, so if you do take him, study and take good notes. Exam averages were super low this semester and he curved only one of them, so don't hope for a curve/extra credit. Also, make sure to do the homework and the quizzes, missing a lot can really hurt your grade.
He is so hard to meet with, will not answer questions at all. Is horrible at explaining anything and everything. Lectures are on Youtube and does not explain very well, speeds through it and is all over the place. I will avoid taking him for anything ever again.
Dr. Xu is a fantastic professor!! You will learn so much from his class. I literally adore this man. If you have him, you are so lucky. He is super kind and works really hard to make sure you understand what he is teaching. Hosted office hours all the time so you could log in and talk to him. Literally such a gem of a human.
Most people are rating Dr. Xu way too harsh. Chemistry is a hard course in general, but he does a good job teaching it. Video lectures are long & boring, but really helpful. If you watch the videos, do homework, and study you'll do fine. Exams were very straight forward and matched notes and examples. Just wish he'd post grades on ecampus
Do NOT take this online. It is horrible. The tests are like the examples but good luck understanding those. Lectures on youtube aren't very helpful. Class sessions are even worse. He doesn't use a powerpoint and basically just talks about chem like we're supposed to somehow know it and be able to follow without seeing an example.
He is super nice and explains things very well if you ask him, you have to pay attention during lectures and you be alright.
he does a good job at communicating material, but the examples he gives in lectures and on quizzes are nothing like the exams. The class average on one exam was in the 60s and he decided he wasn't going to curve because 5 out of 250+ students got an A.
This is obviously a difficult course, and if you are not ready for that you shouldn't even consider taking 116. Unrelatedly, to say professor Xu is the worst teacher I've ever had, is an under statement. Lectures are long, confusing, and rushed (1 hr). Asking any question, will result in a condescending answer. Exams/quizzes are 90% of your grade.
The amount of time I have spent for this class is far from disgusting. Other than an hour meeting mwf, you also have an hour recoded lecture to watch each of those days. Good luck deciphering the chicken scratch that is professor Xu's handwriting. Makes you pay for another app for quizzes because he is too lazy to do it on ecampus. Hw is 10% & long

I think he is the best choice of chemistry professors at WVU. I took him for 115 and 116 and received an A for both. The exams are pretty hard, but as long as you pay close attention to the examples given in lecture and review your notes well, you should be fine!
Dr. Xu is truly an amazing teacher. I hesitated to take him at first but I would recommend him to anyone taking chem 116. He is my fav prof at WVU so far. He definitely doesn't sugar coat anything and his tests are hard, but if you study you will be fine. He is also great when you ask him questions at explaining them 1 on 1.
Doesn't seem to care about his students and if they pass or fail. He talks very fast and can be very quiet and has horrendous handwriting. You may think you know the topics on the test yet still fail. He is horrible at giving feedback, especially with tests.
Professor Ming Xu, he is a not the best chemistry instructor. He tends to keep his class at a fast pace, outside class learning will need to be done. During his in class lectures, majority of the content is not explained in other ways. In more words, he is a strict professor, take him at your own risk :)
Lectures are fast paced with not much review time. Hes bad at explaining and wont ever repeat. Tests are hard no matter how long you study. No help outside of class. I am lucky I passed as a bunch of my classmates were near failing or failed. Communication aint the best with him. Get another chemistry professor.
This is the worst class I have ever taken, do not take this class (especially if you don't already have a strong science background). Tests are worth 75% of your grade and he tests on things we have not even learned in class.
Never take this class. Professor Xus class is 75% all exams, so you fail your exams and you will not pass. I took 2 years of chemistry in high school and failed the first 2 exams so I will not be passing. Skip class, you wont pass anyway. The exams also relate nothing to what was covered in class.
his exams are 75% of your grade and theyre HARD. hes incredibly unhelpful when it comes to review and if you ask a question he will make you feel incredibly stupid. im doing really well in every class im taking this semester except for this one. literally take anyone else.
Do not take him!!! Exams are the only grades and he does not teach well!!!
Mingming is a good teacher, but only gives 1 or 2 examples for each concept. If you are coming in with a decent chem background, you will do fine but studying is a must. Everything on exams is covered in class but you have to be willing to take the time to study to truly understand it. HW is not helpful and annoying since it's on ALEKS, but doable.
Do not skip class or you will be lost. If you have trouble understanding concepts with only one or two examples, then this is not the class for you. He covers material extremely quickly and never reviews after it is first presented. Exam content is expected but is very hard if you do not study and really review notes, recitations, and quizzes.
Worst class ever. I studied, went to tutoring, got help from fellow students and still had an F in the class. If you aren't already amazing at chem this class will destroy you. Little to no credit is given for the amount of time you put into homework, and if you do bad on an exam your grade is done. He's very concending with his answers aswell.
MingMing was the most stressful class I have ever taken in my life. His class solely relies on good exam scores. I do not recommend taking as a professor.
Worst professor i've ever had. Could not care less about his students or how they do. Every test grade average in his class was always failing and he sees no issue with that. Offers no help or engagement, and just tells u to study better. I studied nonstop and did everything right, and he still failed me. If u don't know chem goin in, u will fail
Please don't take this class. I thought that the reviews might not be accurate of how bad this class truly was, but they are. I was a straight A student in AP classes in high school, but I spent the semester wondering if I was going to fail. Exams are full of trick questions. Class averages on exams were failing, he doesn't curve. Grade75% Exams
I found that many lectures would lead to off topic discussion, causing him to go over the class time. My biggest concern was his feedback, I emailed him about issues I would run into in the semester, and he gave very little back in terms of helping to find a resolution to those problems. I would definitely not want to be in that environment again.
Dr. Xu has a reputation of being hard but he gives you a lot of resources to practice the material. His lectures are also really easy to follow because he writes everything on the board. His tests are hard but its because of the content and time constraint, not him. Just do all of the practice work he suggests and youll be fine.
As other students who took this class, I was a straight A student in high school, who took AP and dual enrollment classes, and I still could not pass this class. I felt he didn't explain topics very well and only did one or two practice problems per topic. He also didn't give us many resources to practice and doesn't respond to emails.
Mingming is probably among the worst professors I have had at this institution so far. Exams are 77% of your grade and only 20 questions! He gives only one example for learning new topics and they are usually simple. When you go to homeworks and exams the questions are way more difficult than the one example he gives in class. Would not recommend!
Hands down worst professor ever. If there was a way to give half a star I would. Exams are 10 times harder than any homework or quiz given. Got an A in chem last semester and just got a 50% on 1st exam.
Worst professor I've ever had. I am a straight-A student, but this class was ridiculous! When he lectured on chem calculations, he would already have the answers calculated out and so he wouldn't bother explaining why he was doing what he was doing. There is no engagement in the class, he just talks without checking in on students' understanding.
Hard to understand lectures. Difficult exams which make up most of your final grade. Have to spend a lot of time preparing and have a good understanding of material before going into exams.
Class was hard but he changed the way he did stuff from past semesters!Homework is on eCampus (very helpful) Quizzes- (tricky) definitely make sure you understand problems for exams. Exams were average. If you study you should get at least a 65% He will give EC opportunities. I feel Im not great at chem and I got a B, Dont go in with bad mindset!
I took Chem 115 in the spring with Mingming. I had a tutor, attended nearly every lecture, and even had a study group. I did everything in my power to learn from this class, but in the end I didn't learn a thing. His lectures don't make since, over 75% of your grade is from exams alone. I'm a A-B student, do not take this professor.
WHATEVER you do, do not take this professor. His entire course is based your tests. When it comes to emailing, he is unresponsive. He won't feel sorry for failing you and won't give you any bonus points or extra credit. He mentally calculates during class and is uninterested in going into additional detail about how he arrived at his conclusions.
Dr. Xu is a good professor. He does explain things well for the most part. Some lectures are better than others. It is very test heavy, which is a major downside. You must go to class or your will not pass, and he doesn't always show every problem you could encounter. He isn't as bad as everyone says, but be prepared to work hard for a good grade.
Exams are way too rough for the percent that it is worth for the grade, his lectures however did swap between extremally boring and mildly entertaining. Don't take if your if your major is not related to chem.
Exams are too difficult. Spend the majority of the time making stupid statements, such as declaring that everyone will perform poorly on the test if he asks a question and no one in the class responds. He never apologizes or attempts to help you during office hours if you are on the verge of failing the class. Don't take it with him.
Mingming gives good lectures, test material matches exactly what you do in class and homework. I had him for both 115 and 116, both classes were great and fairly easy. If you're a strong student, it won't be a hard class. Although if you skip class and don't do the homework/quizzes, you'll definitely fail.
Dr. Xu makes it easy to stay engaged. He asks questions to make sure the class is on the same page. He won't test topics that haven't been covered, and he puts recitation worksheets/self-assesment questions on eCampus. Examples covered in worksheets, quizzes, and lecture notes are pretty similar to the exam. Don't skip class and you'll be fine.
Professor Xu is, without a doubt, the best professor I've ever had. I think a lot of the poor reviews are kids coming in to 115 and 116 straight out of high school AP chem or 110 etc. Chem is hard. The exams are hard. But it is chemistry. Dr. Xu is incredibly engaging, kind, takes things slowly, and provides several examples. I highly recommend.
The course was very difficult, but this is to be expected of a chemistry course. What made the class even worse was the fact that exams were 80% of the grade; this, to me, seems outrageous for a class that is already difficult. Be prepared to study (A LOT) to get the grade that you want in the class.
Professor Xu is an amazing teacher, its just unfortunate the material is very difficult to grasp. He made many great and funny analogies that made the class easier. There are quizzes every non-exam week and a few extra credit assignments. Exams are multiple choice but have randomized questions for every student, which really hurt me on the final.
Dr. Xu was not as bad as I expected from seeing reviews. His lectures were engaging, and he posted lecture videos if you had to miss class. My main problem was the way they did exams with randomized questions out of 200 so you would in theory get 10 of the same type of question which ended up hurting me. So be sure to study ALOT.
Mingming is an amazing teacher. I've had him for other chem courses and have always felt they were fair. The problem is this semester he had to coordinate his exams with Betsy. These professors have completely different teaching styles and often teach completely different things. It is not viable to make their exams the same.
Professor Xu is hands-down my favorite instructor at WVU. Chem is difficult, and no one is going to make it easily digestible, but Mingming makes an extreme effort to be engaging, entertaining, and to cover everything thoroughly. Judging from previous reviews I imagine he really changed up his teaching style, and is (now) a must take for Chem.
I had him for 115 and 116. A lot of people didn't like him but it was just because the class was hard. You have to pay attention during lectures. As long as you pay attention and submit homework and quizzes on time you will be fine. I got a B in both and barely studied. For 116 he gave us a lot of opportunities to improve our grades.
Very pessimistic and out-of-tune professor. Seems like he just wants to lecture and get out of class as soon as he can. I wish he could articulate himself better and be more caring towards his students. He often intimidates them and tells them they have no chance of passing his course if they don't understand X. I would like to see encouragement.
Does not give much study material for exams. Do good in the weekly quizzes and homework since they are open notes. It takes a minute to get used to how he speaks but otherwise, he explained things well.
Professor Xu is very nice but I did not find lectures to be helpful at all. I self-studied the majority of the class and ended up with an A. From what I've heard the other Chem 115 professors aren't much better so I would take him again.
This was the worst course I've ever taken because the professor never covered relevant material to assignments and exams. He purposefully did not share review materials with my section, but he would spend half the class rambling about bad grades. I only did well because I would put in 10+ hours a week using other professors for tutoring.
Mingming is very rude and does not care if you fail his class. Approximately half his students fail his class every semester. He does not teach correctly and has barely any assignments so most of your grade is based on the exams. Don't expect him to be helpful during office hours either. He does not respond to emails and if he does, they are rude.
Goes over material in lecture too quickly. If you take his class you need to review, practice and study each subject through other sources on your own time. Willing to help you. A decent professor but unless you're gifted, or have had plenty of experience in chemistry don't take his course unless you are willing to put in many hours in studying.
He was a good professor. The problem was I took him in Spring 2023 when he had to coordinate his exam with Radcliff and they have two different teaching styles and topics they stress. His homework and explanations were easy and simple, and if it were just HIS exams I was taking, then yes I would take his class again. Class very exam heavy (80% ish)
MingMong was a great guy and a heartfelt friend. chemistry
Professor Mingming makes chemistry engaging, even if the material is challenging. Attend class, use the free textbook, and try unstuckstudy ai - it's a great study tool. The exams are tough, but putting in the work pays off.
Having Dr. Ely, one of the best chem professors for 115 and then having Mingming in 116 was just a horrid experience. His lectures are not engaging and I got nothing from them. Tests involve both conceptual and math, which was a big change from 115 so beware of that. Study the after class assignments and you will be fine.
He's a Chinese professor, but he speaks English better than most non-American professors. He does care about his students, but they don't seem to put in the work to get good grades.
I asked for help after coming back from having covid for a week (he knew this) and he said if I didn't have certain formulas memorized then he couldn't help me-so I asked which formulas I needed to know and he told me they were on the chalkboard on one of the days I missed, so I had to "figure it out". I dropped the class right before he failed me.
This class was the worst I've taken. Ming never entered grades, and when I asked about when he would input them, he said he didn't know how. He spent class complaining about poor grades on exams and quizzes (the average was always failing). During class, he spent little time on topics that were relevant to homework and/or exams.
He's the goat. Plain and simple. Great teacher, got me inspired in chemistry. All the math is the same with a little change. He's got sass.
Very lecture heavy. Attendance isn't mandatory, but not attending the lectures will result in a poor grade. Exams are 50% of your grade with the final being 25% but he gives you pre-tests that are exactly like the exams. If you practice those, along with the homeworks, you will get a good grade. People complaining definitely just slacked off.
I have not heard positive things about this professor, but he was the only teacher for this class that fit in my schedule. I asked to meet with him multiple times. He would set up dates and times and not show up to his office. He blew me off without contacting me five times. If you are naturally good at chem, you will be fine. He is not helpful.
Avoid Mingming at ALL costs! He was a horrible professor who didn't follow his own syllabus criteria, never answered emails, and gave poorly worded lectures which were not engaging and difficult to understand. He is completely unaware, doesn't speak good English, & NEVER updates ecampus grades properly, therefore misrepresenting our class progress.
Exams are not like the material gone over. He does not go over important concepts on the exams well but will go in depth about stuff he says we will not need for this course. He does not put in grades so you don't know your actual grade in the class. If you want to pass this class practice problems and organic chemistry tutor will save your life.
Difficult exams, lots of studying, difficult questions l
Mingming gets a bad reputation but I found him to be an amazing chemistry teacher. His homework and exams are challenging, but if you put in the effort to understand the content and ask for help when needed, you shouldn't find yourself in any trouble.
While Dr. Gu can be an intense force in the lecture hall, he is a very good teacher if you take the time to show up and focus/follow along with his examples! Although I struggle a bit with chem, his (sometimes hilarious) explanations and dedication to helping anyone who asks made this class easier for me. I definitely recommend him for 116!
This professor made it so hard to learn chemistry. He would just write random things on the chalkboard with little to no explanation expecting us to just know it. It was also extremely difficult to contact him. I have emailed him multiple times and he did not answer me once. He was also extremely rude when the whole class would do bad on the exam.
Dr. Xu is definitely hard to work with at the start of the semester. But once you settle in and get used to the teaching style, then the class becomes far easier. You have to study and show up, but doing those simple things make it 10x easier to pass compared to just giving up cause the professor is tough to work with at the start.
Dr. Xu is an amazing professor. His lectures are pretty good, and he uses good analogies to explain difficult concepts better. He is also very funny. The class is very test heavy though, so be prepared to study.
He is fine, the class is difficult by itself and he does not necessarily make it easier. The lectures are fast and he really only uses the chalkboard instead of technology tools. This entire class is based on the exams there are 4-5 of them and if you get a bad score on one its very hard to come back from it.
Really difficult professor but teaches the material excellently.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Easily gets off-topic and rants on things that do not matter. The content of your exams will not match with any practice he gives you.
Funny and kind. Chem 115 is not hard as long as you take notes in class.
He's an overall silly guy. He might not be the best at explaining things but he's a very fair grader.
Wouldn't recommend if you do not already have a basis of chem, his classes consist of only chalk board lectures and he is difficult to hear. Content is similar to Chem 110, just more in depth. Exams 75% of grade. He is also not super tech savvy.
He makes learning anything extremely difficult and does not explain how things work.
It is a tougher class, but he genuinely cares and wants the class to do well. If you do well with the homework, take notes, and pay attention in class, you will be fine!
CHEM 115 is generally all over the place, regardless. It is a good general overview of Chemistry if you want to learn and have some background. He wants his students to succeed and is available a good portion of the week if you need to come in. Most of your grade is exams and there is little chance for extra credit.
Mingming is great. I had him for both CHEM 115 and 116, and I feel like he has helped me develop a good foundation for general chemistry. He was good for 115, but he was great for 116. He is very funny and gives good lectures. If you show up to class and put in the work, you will pass this class. I highly reccomend him.
Expects us to learn new content the week before the final. The material was not covered in detail and expects us to be experts in it. Could have taught myself the same material in half the time and better.
I would not recommend him to anyone. Everyone I know that took chem 116 failed this course with him as a professor. He only writes on the chalk board and his notes are messy. He sends out practice exams that are nothing like the real test, so students have no idea what to expect. His lectures were hard to stay engaged in.
Lectures are boring, just copies notes on the chalkboard. Also spends good amounts of class lecturing that exam averages are low and why we don't understand concepts. Homework's take a fair amount of time so it does help you understand. Exams are worth the majority of your grade so be prepared. He is funny, so it makes things a bit easier
People give Mingming a bad wrap and want to blame their grade on the professor when really they do not want to put in the work. The pretests and homework are the same questions that are on the exams, so as long as you get good grades on those, you will be fine. I took AP chem in high school, and this class was a breeze.
Dr. Xu is clealry experienced in his field and gives good feedback office hours, but in lectures he often rambles on and on wasting valuble time to actually teach. The exams can make or break your grade, even if you do well the final can ruin it all. Overall he's a great and funny guy, exams are the worst part which is something to watch out for.
Everyone told me that Mingming was going to be a bad teacher but it honestly depends on the person. I thought that Mingming taught the class well and answered all the questions I had. The tests were like the practice tests he posts but yet the tests are still hard. This class itself wasn't easy and I think it was a fair class.
Professor Mingming was one of my favorite professors, you could tell he really cared about how his students were doing. The class can be hard, content wise, but he is very thorough on his notes and provides other resources besides homework to help you prepare.
Tough, but a very good professor.
Professor Xu is a very polite and respectable man, that being said, he is a terrible professor. His Course was incredibly difficult, and the grades were based solely on the 3 exam grades. He lectures from the chalkboard and often goes overtime by 5-10 minutes. He was available by email and offered extra help, but I found it to be unhelpful for me.
Don't take if you want to pass
Mingming is the worst professor I've had. He teaches like we already know chemistry, skips half the content, writes only on a chalkboard no one can see, never answers emails, gives no study guides, and his notes/homework look nothing like the exams. I've had to rely on ChatGPT to learn anything.
Prof. Xu was a good professor , his exam questions are "almost" identical to the Homework practice questions , He gives lots of Homework assignments and quizzes , and he is caring. He is a tough grader, but if you stay engaged in class, attend regularly, ask questions, and keep up with the homework, you can do well.
I think Ming would be a great guy to have a beer with, but he just wasnt the prof for me as someone who didnt take chem in hs. I had a B going into the last exam then final but was terrified to risk it and dropped the class to switch majors entirely. 1 quiz & hw every week and exams every 2 weeks or so. teaching yourself may be better.
Professor Xu is a very nice man and can be helpful if you reach out, but other than that, I feel that he could teach a lot better. He expects you to understand the material as soon as he tells it. This class shouldn't be as difficult as it is for a prep chem class. If you can at all costs, take another professor to save your grade.
