This was a difficult course for me because I hadn't had a math course in 2 years. She explained things pretty well and actually seems to care about her students. The course was rushed because it was during a summer session, but she managed to get all the material in.
You will probably learn more practical information taking this class with her than with anyone else. The drawback is you will put in twice the amount of effort into this course and probably get a lower grade than you would taking this course with anyone else.
Probably one of the easiest classes I've taken at UNC. If you don't have to take an upper level math, definitely take this class. She also teaches you how to use Excel, which is a bonus.
This class was the easiest thing ever, i guess because i had taken calc 2. The homework and assignments were tedious, required a lot of effort but were barely worth anything. As a person who already knew the material, i think that she her explanations were kinda confusing and took the long route in solving problems. Barely used the text book .
loved her... super helpful and a good person
Great teacher, really nice, and cares a lot about her students. I had her for MATH 119 and she taught very in depth, and even showed us how to use excel. Easy to get an A if you study a couple hours for each exam. We also did a lot of group work. Homework was rarely collected, but was sometimes used in class for group work (again, a lot of it).
She is a really nice person, but I feel like lectures weren't as helpful as they could have been. I learned how to do the problems correctly, but there wasn't much emphasis on understanding what our answers meant. The three tests count A LOT so you can't afford to do bad on one of them.
Tests were more than fair and she's a great teacher (and person). I came in dreading this class, but it's now one of my favorites this semester. My recommendation is to do practice problems an hour or two each week (besides the Webassign hw), and you'll breeze through 232
I got an easy 5 on the BC Calc but wanted to be confident going further in math so I retook 232. I tested well (2 high As, 1 high B) but the final was unfair. The other professor wrote it & it didn't test the course material well. I got a mid C on the final and I feel confident in the material. Annoying with no curve. VERY similar for my friends.
Made mathematical mistakes during lecture sometimes, but who doesn't. Caring, helpful during office hours. Webassign was awful. Lectures often didn't prepare you for the difficult problems required on Webassign. Not only were they hard, you had a max of three attempts per problem. She made mistakes in class, but we couldn't on Webassign.
She works through a lot of examples in class, which is helpful only if you already know what you are doing so make sure you don't fall behind. She sometimes doesn't do a great job of explaining things during the lectures but is very helpful one on one. The class was easy but tests are worth over half of your grade so if you bomb one its over
She's a great teacher. I took this course just for the QR credit and I ended up enjoying it. She really cares about if you know the material and is never judgmental if you don't know the material.
Dr. Thomas was a good prof. This is a flip class, so you watch a video and take notes on it before going to class and then do a few practice problems in class. She is good at explaining in class so just ask. Tests were a pretty challenging but as long as you watch the videos and know how to do the in-class assignments the midterms should be ok.
I needed pre-cal for my major and I'm so glad I took it with Dr. Thomas. She runs her classroom flipped style and I learned so much that way by taking notes on the videos before class and then doing the practice problems during lecture. She explains concepts well in class and is always accessible right after for extra help in office hours.
If you do the work you will be fine for class. Attendance isnt mandatory because learning catalytics can be done from your dorm, but you may miss a few things in lecture if you get in a habit of not going to class. Very caring professor, and is always willing to help you.
Overall, Dr. Thomas is a caring professor and truely loves math and wants the success of her students. I thought that her lectures were rather low paced but overall understandable. Math 130 is a fliped class, so just watch the videos before class and your're good.
makes at least 5 Enormous mistakes per lecture. so hard to follow what she's doing bc she barely knows what she's doing. doesn't explain the math behind the tricks she uses, just assumes you know how to do it. HWs are way harder than anything done in class. so frustrating. would never recommend.
Lectures are awful, she doesn't teach the material, she just does math in front of you and expects you to understand. Homework is next to impossible compared to the questions we cover in class. I feel like I understood the material better during the COVID quarantine just by skipping lectures and watching youtube vids. Also she teaches on projector.
Dr. Thomas is an awesome lecturer and communicates concepts very well. The class has a couple homework assignments due every week and a recitation activity, but these ultimately should bump your grade. Midterms weren't too hard if you study, the final is the hardest though so try to keep a good average early. Would recommend her class!
MATH232 is no joke, but Dr. Thomas made it bearable. While she would occasionally make mistakes during lecture, she was transparent and would let us know where she went wrong. She's very kind and understanding one-on-one. While she won't hold your hand the entire time, she provides all the resources you need to pass. Ask for help if needed!!
Definitely take Professor Thomas for Calc 2!!! Class notes are extremely organized powerpoint slides with tons of space for notes so you never feel like you're missing anything. She is super caring and will stop the lecture for questions. She is very reasonable, especially during virtual classes, rounding everyone's grade to the nearest integer.
Professor Thomas makes Calc 2 achievable! A lot of people complain about the difficulty of the homework, but it is definitely doable with the amount of resources available. A few homework grades are also dropped at the end, so there is flexibility. As long as you actively follow her notes during class and seek help when needed, you will be fine.
Dr. Thomas's lectures can be boring at times, but she has organized outlines that she follows that help. Her tests are easier than others, but math232 at UNC is no joke and is a jump from 231. MathLab homework SUCKS but resources like math center help a lot. Made a lot of changes to help with distance learning that show that she does care a lot.
Professor Thomas has been my favorite math teacher so far. She goes in-depth with every topic in class and is always willing to answer questions. She also explains the logic behind a lot of problems to give you a better understanding. If you miss a class, it is not that big of a deal as long as you have a friend who can provide the notes for you.
Very sweet person to interact with but made so many mistakes with during the lectures and wouldn't correct them until 48 hours later when you've already finished studying and processing the material.
Do not take Math 231 with Professor Thomas. During our zoom lectures, she never turned on her camera once and relied completely on long, unclear slideshow notes that were not helpful in preparing for the tests. I did every single problem in the textbook chapters for the last test of the semester (not the final) and got a 65.
Thomas is a fine teacher, just not the best option for MATH231 (Take McCombs). The tests are hard and you have to study A LOT outside of class if you want a good grade. I took calc in high school and got an A and struggled in this class. 78% of your grade is based on 3 tests and final, but the final does replace lowest test (which saved me)
this class wasn't great, lectures were super boring. unreasonable amount of homework, tests super hard.
She's an alright professor for calc. She frequently makes errors during class while teaching which is kind of concerning but students usually capture her mistakes. The class itself is hard and she doesn't necessarily help or hurt that fact. Just an average professor, she is very friendly and nice though.
Math 232 - She is very nice and willing to go over things, but is NOT good at explaining the concepts. The introductions to concepts are very surface level and she goes rapidly through examples without much explanation or guidance. Many students feel very lost in class and get so left behind that they can not even form questions.
She is the worst. She's completely inaccessible outside of class and clearly does not care about students. Showed up late to our test after telling us to arrive early. Takes off 15+ points on tests for one error. Never explains her work and skips steps which makes her work impossible to follow. Pair her w a bad TA and this class is hell.
I love this class! I don't get why Thomas has such a bad rep. Lectures are very straightforward (she makes mistakes every now and then but who doesn't), she's super friendly, and tests aren't nearly as hard as the homework. If you are not a strong math person be prepared to put in some extra work, do not try to blame it entirely on the professor.
She's a pretty good professor for what she teaches. I'm taking this class right now and it's fine enough. Just be sure you know how to do everything. She provides review problems and answers questions on Piazza, but if you don't use those, you may find yourself losing 20/100 points on a test because you don't know how to do a free response!
Don't get me wrong, she seems like a sweet lady that knows her material, however, her lectures are extremely hard to follow. The material is very difficult, she works through problems too fast, the homework is long (and nearly impossible), and if you do not have a good TA, recitation won't help. Avoid this class if you value your mental health. <3
The material in this class was so difficult, not directly due to Prof. Thomas's teaching. I appreciated how she worked through problems slowly with step by step instructions in class, but she often picked out easier problems to do in class. We often had problems on tests and hw that were much more difficult which was frustrating.
Dr. Thomas was very organized in her lectures. She uploads the slides before class for you to fill in. There is a lot of homework, but she gives extensions a lot. She genuinely cares for her students and offers a large range of office hours. Tests were fair and a lot of study materials were provided.
Just an ok professor. Final is worth 40%, with a final replacing the lowest grade. Hard for sure, calc will never easy unless you keep practicing. Lecture is pretty fast pace and she does some steps in her head so it is hard to keep up when you look back to it sometimes. Lectures are kinda boring.
So many mistakes during lecture, not very understanding, easier tests than expected, be prepared to spend a lot of time outside of class teaching yourself the material.
I do not recommend. Dr Thomas is the reason I will be taking Calc 3 off campus next semester instead of settling for a lower rated professor...I learned my lesson and will never make the same mistake again.
She made some mistakes in lectures, but she usually corrected herself. You had to teach yourself some material outside of class, but it's no fault of hers. Calculus 2 is a hard class- it isn't her fault. Tests were alright if you prepared. She wasn't the best professor I've ever had, but she was far from a bad professor. She's definitely overhated.
I really appreciate Dr. Thomas's methodical way of explaining various concepts in Calc 2. Her note outlines are very helpful, and while she does make some mistakes here or there, she accepts feedback graciously and is always willing to help students outside of class. Her tests are also very similar to in-class problems, so definitely manageable!
Overexplains the easy stuff and doesn't explain the harder. Just didn't learn much from her, ended up teaching myself most of it. TA over my recitation said that she shouldn't be including one of the units in the class but idk. Oh, and she never answers emails
I'm not sure why her score is so low... She goes over examples in class and doesn't get bogged down in theory like some other 232 profs. As far as 232 goes I'm not sure you could have a much better experience.
The lectures can be boring at times but she goes through a lot of specific examples and tests tend to be easier than the harder class/test review problems. If you study the reviews youll always be prepared for her tests. The homework is much harder though, luckily its only a small percent of the grade and you get multiple attempts.
I recommend taking Math 232 with Professor Thomas. She explains well and is organized. I love that she posts all lectures, slides, and gives test study guides. This class is difficult because Calc 2 is hard. Professor Thomas does everything she can to make it easier. If you want a good grade, then you have to work for it through practice problems.
The homework and tests she gives are relatively fair and she was very merciful on the final exam. That being said, she makes a TON of mistakes in class and sometimes takes a few days until she realizes it. 10/10 recommend just teaching yourself the content beforehand and practicing in her class.
Professor Thomas was great. Lectures could be dry at times, but if you paid attention in class and did the homework, the tests were very doable. There were 3 tests and a final, but none of them were terribly difficult. Work outside class is reasonable - one or two homeworks per week.
Thomas is a nice person, but she lectures off of powerpoints, making her teaching style boring. I have a headache after most classes, not only because the content is hard, but she sometimes just skips over explaining the most difficult parts of the course. Overall, if you put the time and effort in with homework and other resources, you'll be fine.
Professor Thomas was a little difficult to adjust to but now that the class is over I don't want a math class to be any different to how she conducts her class. She gives blank notes to fill out with lectures and makes the test pretty simple. If you study the lecture problems for midterms and then old tests for the final you should get an A.
Miranda was a great teacher for MATH232. I really liked her style for lecturing. She would go through the guided notes on her iPad and display her screen for everyone to see. She recorded all of her lectures and made it really easy to go back and watch. I would rewatch lectures before midterms and it was very helpful. I wish she taught MATH233!
Dr. Thomas was by far one of the better math teachers I have had at UNC! Her lectures were easy to follow and they were incredibly helpful when it came to the homework. If I ever have the opportunity to take another one of her courses, I will absolutely sign up!
As far as math profs go Mrs Thomas is one of the best. That being said, this class still isn't that great but maybe that has more to do with me than her. Pay attention in class and do the classwork and you will be okay maybe.
She is a good teacher, if you already know the subjects prior to. She teaches by power points and does not show good examples when learning a topic. She also skips over the difficult parts with teaching and does not explains things clearly. You will definitely have to use other sources/notes off google to learn the topics if you are new to it.
Her approach to math is very straightforward, and practical. However, her lectures consist of her quickly doing problems on the board and then moving on to the next without checking for understanding or explaining in detail what's happening. Did give a lot of extensions on homework, and the test is very similar to the problems in class.
I liked Professor Thomas, and am taking her again for Cal 2. Her lectures are straightforward, and her notes are good and reflect test material. She is understanding and will move back homework deadlines. She does tend to move through material very fast, but this wasn't a problem for me. Overall straightforward and fair class.
I believe Dr. Thomas did a good job of teaching Math 231. She occasionally messed up on questions in class or would go too fast, but she extended homework if we needed it and the test questions were often similar to recitation questions/in class questions. She would also explain any questions you needed after class.
I learned next to nothing from the class itself, but I liked Dr. Thomas because her tests were the easiest of any math class. Dr. Thomas would make mistakes in class and the peer mentors would not explain anything when you asked. I think she cares, but she needs to check her work. To get an A, you need to teach yourself outside of class.
She was a very mid-professor. The one thing that was nice was that she did her lectures on fill-in-the-blank notes. Otherwise, the class is test-heavy, and tests only had a few questions. TAs do a lot of the grading and recitations were difficult. Homework was long and often didn't pertain to lectures.
Dr. Thomas truly is a professor who wants to teach, she got her degree in teaching math and it shows. Her lectures are a little slow, but her tests are easy compared to lectures and recitation, and she does everything she can to prepare you. She is very kind and understanding, and if you just communicate she is happy to help. Best prof for calc 1!!
Dr. Thomas is great! She has a really good style of teaching and is very charismatic. I'm not at all a calc person, so I struggled a lot with the content, but it's absolutely not a result of her teaching. I didn't talk to her much, but the times I did she was super nice. If you have to take calc, I'd definitely recommend taking her class!
Professor Thomas' teaching style is very unorganized and confusing. There were multiple classes where she wrote down work on slides, but then it would all be wrong. During tests, she would make announcements about there being multiple typos and incorrect values on questions. If you can take this class with another professor I would recommend it.
Prof Thomas was a very good 232 teacher up until halfway through the semester. After the first midterm, her lectures almost being impossible to follow along with. Ended up watching youtube videos to teach myself all new content instead.
I personally thought she was a really good teacher and explained things in depth well. She was really understanding with deadlines and I don't think the class was that difficult.
I took her for calc 1 and 2 and I like her teaching style. However, at the end of calc 2 she taught us two new units in the last week where the other sections were taught them early in the semester. We had no practice with the material and it was heavy on the final. So it was very frustrating and my final grade suffered because of that.
I have taken Professor Thomas for calc 1 and 2 and thoroughly enjoyed her. Her exams are the easiest by far and she does genuinely care about teaching. She is difficult to access outside of class, and beware that every exam I have taken included a grading mistake, but the class rewards diligent effort, and she is by far the best calc prof.
Don't take her. She's not a mean person, but you will often find yourself scrambling to finish notes as she moves through slides quickly with little explanation. She makes mistakes in class and typos on exams. Our final was written by a different professor and recieved no curve. 10% of the final was a unit we covered the last two days of class.
The class is tough and many of the topics needed to be learned by yourself. Expect a hard class but if you put in the effort, you should come out with a decent grade.
She put in an A for my grade in connect carolina and then on the final day of grades being due, sent me a message telling me that she messed up my grade and lowered it to an A-. Talk about giving out false hope. Not cool.
Dr Thomas' form of teaching is based on reading off of . She expects you to already know complex topics before the class. She is not accessible outside of class. She is also a slow grader. Even after you teach yourself, succeeding in this class is very hard. Due to this class, im questioning my abilities to be successful.
Professor Thomas is a great fit for non-math majors. The courseload itself is demanding regardless of who you take it with, but she makes it very digestible. Her syllabus is lenient, with attendance drops, homework drops, and the opportunity to replace your lowest midterm with your final exam grade.
Tests (final plus 3 exams) are worth 80% of final grade. Tests can be pretty challenging and require lots of prep (especially if you are new to calculus.) Makes frequent errors and justifies them, which can be confusing. Drops some homework and Pollev. You can replace a test with the final if it is higher. Office hours ONLY on Zoom, which sucks.
Calc 2 is a hard class by itself, but she makes it even harder to understand. She also gives a lot of homework compared to the rest of the Calc 2 classes. I always had to refer to other calc classes' notes to understand the material. Additionally, her tests are considerably more complex in comparison to the other sections. Take it with McLaughlin!!
Not a very good teacher, and makes lots of mistakes. Regardless she makes exams very easy and she's the best option so take her class.
If you put in the work, you have nothing to worry about taking her class - I took this class first semester freshman year and I heard awful things about Math 232. But Dr. Thomas made this class super fun - and she's so so sweet!
Best Advice: If you are good at math generally, go for her. If you have issues with math, she is not a bad choice, just have friend in the class. I felt that calc 2 is easier than calc 1. It is straight to the point, no words. She gives partial credit for multiple choice. That is amazing.
Dr. Thomas was an amazing professor, really kind and caring! Her notes were fill in the blank, making them easy to print or follow along with as a PDF. There was a lot of hw and it was difficult, but the tests were similar to the notes in class for the most part. Tests made up most of the grade, & the final dropped the lowest test too! Recommend!!
I had previously taken AP Calc in high school, so I had some background knowledge coming into the class. You have to pay attention in class if you want to do well (she doesn't record her lectures), even if you have taken calc before. The final was worth 35% of our grade, so it is important you understand concepts because they build on each other.
Not only is she a very qualified math teacher, but she is genuinely such a nice person. I think her tests are easier than the other sections are she makes it very clear what will be on them...she doesn't try to trick you. She moves fast in lectures but that's every STEM class tbh. Super awesome and totally recommend for any calc class
Professor Thomas teaches ONLY by doing problems. She will only briefly review concepts. If you are not willing to put time into learning outside of class then don't take this course. If you want to do well in this course, go to your TA's office hours. Tests are worth a lot, but if the grade on your final is higher it will replace one test grade.
The lectures were okay. She kinda skips around during her work after the first example so its hard to keep up sometimes. The homework was super hard, way harder than the lecture practice and test. The test are doable if you study a lot. Not my favorite.
Professor Thomas is definitely the professor to take 232 from. She is caring and understanding. Her tests are easier than the other professors, and her tests are very similar to problems done in the class. If you study the slides and her old practice exams for each test, you will be on the right track.
Professor Thomas did a really good job of explaining concepts and was always willing to go back if a student didn't understand something. I had a hard time with the homework at first, we were allowed multiple attempts on problems, which helped. The tests aren't too hard, but make sure you study because they cover a lot of content.
Lectures are from skeleton notes, which is incredibly helpful. Final replaces lowest of 3 quizzes if higher, and homework is slightly curved. Made some mistakes during lectures and some concepts were better explained by outside sources. Class is fast paced, but if you're willing to finish learning concepts outside of class, you'll be fine.
I would take this professor for 231. Her tests are easier compared to the other sections. We do worksheets in recitation and our TA is very helpful. The other sections take graded quizzes during recitation. Her lectures can be unclear, but as long as you're willing to put in the work and take advantage of the math help center you should be ok.
Moves very slow in class and offers very few example problems during class hours and expects complete mastery of subject for homework problem sets, which are 10x more difficult than examples in class. She clearly cares about her students and the subject itself, I just wish she gave us harder problems/more examples in class, kind of frustrating.
Math 231 is hard, but if you have to take it, take it with her. Homework is much harder than tests, but I think that's more of a math department thing. Tests are worth much more anyway, so if you can figure out the homework, you'll do great :) She's also very kind and definitely wants students to succeed.
Dr. Thomas's lectures were really organized and easy to follow, and she posts the notes of canvas. The homework was more complicated than the tests but manageable. This class is very manageable if you do the assigned textbook readings before class, do homework, and use the test reviews and practice tests. The test reviews prepare you well!
i loveeee dr thomas. She is so caring, and she takes the time to reexplain any pre-calc/algebra concepts that people may have forgotten instead of just assuming we remember high school math. her tests are pretty easy, and she sets people up to succeed in her class. definitely take her class
Great lecturer. very clear grading criteria.
Dr. Thomas was a great professor when she was there. We had a sub one too many times and she failed to post homework/class notes on time repeatedly. She is a very nice person but I think she has way too much on her plate and it reflects in class.
This class is super hard but if you're going to take it with anyone make sure it's miranda thomas.
Retook this after being in it with McCombs last spring-- Thomas is significantly better. She writes out each step clearly during class with iPad and is very clear about what you need to know for exams. Do her practice problems-- then you'll have no surprises on the very fair exams. Homework unnecessarily harder than exams. Very kind prof, loved her
Dr. Thomas was a super nice person and she was willing to help a lot, however this class is difficult and in my opinion she didn't really teach the class. She was very scatter-brained and seems to just have too much on her plate, which came out in classes. She also never actually taught, the video lessons were from another professor at UNC.
I really liked Dr. Thomas. She wrote out her notes during the lectures which made it easy to follow along and learn. Her tests were hard and so were some of the homeworks but she did give lots of resources to help you understand the information. I would also say that the TAs were really great for this class and really helped me with the content.
This is literally the worst class I've taken at Carolina. Dr.Thomas made the exams very difficult. She hardly taught and was overall not a good professor. If you can, take it with another professor and save yourself the trouble.
flipped style classroom so she didn't really teach the content. we watched videos for homework and then did practice during class. as long as you did the homework and studied a few days in advance, the midterms were fair. she was super understanding though and ended up randomly giving back a lot of extra credit.
Super great lecturer but we got behind a little bit at times. Takes time to clear up confusion but when that puts us behind it makes for some days that are very quick and a little hectic to catch up to the course plan.
Definitely take MATH231 with Professor Thomas! She's great at breaking down concepts and providing clear explanations. The homework is more challenging than the tests, but using resources like the textbook, practice problems, and unstuck ai can really help you succeed in the class.
Teaching to a large lecture class can be very difficult, but she does a great job of ensuring everyone is caught up. We got behind at times, but she is a super understanding person and is willing to work with you. You can tell that she wants everyone to succeed. She goes a little fast at times just to make sure the material is covered.
She got behind the course timeline at times but caught up and was really amazing. One of the best calc 1 professors. Posts notes online and does them on her iPad in front of the class which was really helpful. Her tests were fair and she gave a lot of partial credit which helps everyone. Super understanding and is prepared to answer any questions.
As someone who doesn't love math and hadn't taken calc in high school, Dr. Thomas made success very achievable. She posts all lecture notes/slides and gives many resources for exams which was super helpful. Overall solid class and great prof for 231
I realize she hasn't been teaching business calc for very long, but this class was difficult and I feel as though it was built for students who already have a strong understanding of calculus. DONT take this class unless you already have a good grasp of calculus concepts.
Dr. Thomas is great, very understanding, and an excellent teacher. Not an easy class. Tests are huge and end up being close to 85% of your grade. I will say, just because this class says it's "business calc" does not mean it's easy. It's very similar to normal calculus, but with a few business-related word problems and formulas thrown in.
second time taking her. very clear lectures and grading criteria. literally just follow the class notes for exams and you'll be okay. she is very kind and patient and never made you feel dumb. attendance is only really a thing for the 2nd/3rd part of semester
She is a really good professor. However, this poor rating stems from how terribly she underprepared the entire class for the final. I had a 94 going into the final and began following her guidelines 2 weeks prior. Suffice to say, I do not know anyone who scored over a 90 (after what was likely a 20+ point curve). My grade dropped from an A to a B+.
Dr. Thomas is a pretty good professor! She is a good lecturer, her tests were fairly easy, and she is genuinely such a sweet human being. The only things I would comment on are that she did not prepare us too well for the final exam, but I don't think any calc 1 teacher did. Also, sometimes she falls behind on notes. Besides that, she is great!
Dr. Thomas was, overall, a great professor- her expectations were clear and fair. The HW was harder than the exams, but it prepared you well. The kicker of this class was the final- made by the overall math department was way harder than the other exams and honestly, completely unreasonable. No hate to Dr. Thomas but def hate towards the department
Overall this one was a good class. The slides she went over in class were similar in difficulty to the 3 mid term exams. What neither me, nor the students I talked to after the semester ended, were prepared for was the final. The final was unreasonably hard for what we had been previously tested on. My grade dropped 12 points due to the final.
