Nice teacher. Does not collect homework. Tough exams.
You'll need to study to pass but she teaches fairly well. Teaches way better than Hayashi. DO NOT EVER take hayashi.
took her during summer school for trig.. not bad she'll explain things until you understand is patient with you. tests are simple. maybe because its a summer class. who knows
Nice class, even though she doesn't collect hw you better do the hw if you wanna do well in the class. Here's a quote, "yes why no why?", "I love this problem, who picked it?"
BEST IN THIS ******* CAMPUS
Ms Castroconde is a really good teacher who explains well. Sometimes, the pace of the class is too fast for some people to even catch their breath. She gave quizzes every monday and her tests are pretty straight forward. See her at Math Lab for help.
I totally agree with the previous post.DON'T TAKE HER CLASS! You'll have to learn from the textbook if you take her.
Very thorough. No where near as hard as she could be. Quizzes and tests are fairly easy. Learning Maple with the class is extremely worthwhile, she is very personable and helpful, always responds to email, and willing to work with you.
Very thorough teaching. Wants students to learn and is willing to work as hard as the students for success. Some think she is hard, but I think it is just a lot of material to cover in a short period. She does a good job with it. Fun personality.
I haven't been in her class for a long time, and I only take tests! She is the best Math teacher @ IVC. Very Good!
Her instruction is very fast paced. She is very helpful upon request. Great personality. Beware of her T/F questions. To get credit you must justify why it is true or false, very tricky!!! I lost many points to these even though the T/F part was correct.
She is a good professor, very passionate about the material. You can think of her like "Math Yoda". Very clear explanations; weekly quizzes are good test preparation.
Instructor needs more training in mathematics. Students are afraid to question her authority because instructor presents the material obscurely so there is not enough information for students to digest, only accept as true.
I can't comment on her knowlage, because she is a berkeley grad. You have to treat her well. She is a little too picky about problems, but she is nice of cource overally easy.
My average on my quizzes was a 96% I got an A on one test, a B on another test and a C on another test and I got a C in the class. She may be good for the easier classes but when it comes to linear algebra or D.E. she reads straight from the book.
it is really hard to understand the lectures and get a good grade because she explains so freakin' fast..!
Very helpful and nice...
She gives facinating lectures, and has a great teaching style. Her classes are at a lightning fast pace, so be forewarned. She is very fair, and very knowledgeable about her math. Not an easy grade, but you will come away with a lot of knowledge.
She really helps u. She is kind even though she always acknowledges she is mean..
I have taken all of my higher maths with Miriam and I can assure that she is the best math teacher around. She is not the easiest but you will get the grade you deserve.
I dont know what people are saying. But Castroconde cannot teach. She has problems doing problems from the board herself and people in the class dont say anything because they think she deserves credit cause she went to Berkley. She has no logic whatsoever and has no right to teach at all.
Do not take Diff Eq. with her. She don't know what she is doing. the Quiz is a killer. If more math prof. like her no one in U.S. will learn math any more. Many time she is doing the wrong prove in class. she teach very fast and write very fast. you don't have time to listen to what she has said.
Arrogant teacher. she demands a lot from student, but she is not holding up her end.
Great teacher, tests can be hard if you don't study. But if you study hard easy A.
she is really a good teacher. if you do the homeworks and go to class, you will get an A easily. the only thing that i didnt like about her class was doing the project. they were time consuming.
Easy class if you study with your book alone. dont rely on her in getting the subject matter she just parrots right from the book and her notes are exactly from the book. just skip the class on days without quizzes and tests and simply study the book.
Her lecture is crystal clear.Exams&quizes are very similar to suggested homework exercises,so do all the assigned homeworks&your satisfactory grade is guaranteed.I highly recommend her clas.A bad instructor is something, but being lazy&blaming your lazyness on the instructor is something else.
A combination of Nice and Mean personalitis provided in one package named castroconde. She is a real tough teacher.
joke time teacher. self study the subject matter and chances are you'd learn the exact same way with mrs. castraconde. her tests and quizzes are easy though.
she is PERFECT!!!!
take her classes at saddleback. she's a read-from-the-book-teacher.
She frequently confuses herself during the lecture, and sometimes gets proved wrong by a student. Test was easy for me because I taught myself from the book. She cannot teach, so if you are not good at math you will struggle. I do like the quiz every week however... it keeps me on track.
The book explains better. A waste of time to take her. She confuses herself and stops in the middle. She should take a class to teach.
she is the best teacher at IVC.
I think she is a great teacher. Very helpful and clear in her lectures. Her quizzes and tests are very fair and if you do you homework and keep up with the class you can get an A.
weekly quizes, maples projects, pretty hard tests make this class a total ppain! But she is always ready to answer question, inside and out of class
She's a very nice teacher. You should study for her class in order to get an A. the exams and quizes are not that hard. A is possible. I liked her. Just do what she wants then you'll get an A.
Very good teacher. Lots of work. Class enjoyable. Must work to get A, but you learn.
The best teacher at IVC! You can tell she loves math and knows it well. Learned a lot this semester. Lots of work but test are fair. The weekly quizzes very helpful.
This woman cannot teach. She copies her notes directly from the book and she still gets puzzled. It is extremely hard to understand her with her thick Mexican accent especially when she makes her constant errors.
She knows nothing.
let the ratings speak for itself!!!
she says that shes mean and stuff. shes not. shes just not a good teacher.
This teacher loves to help you out if you ask. I do not hink her accent is a big deal and she is not from Mexico she is from Belize.
Wonderful teacher! Hard, but very fair. She really does love her students and math.
always says shes mean - actually shes not, shes really nice but what she isn't is a good teacher. shes horrible. take her if you want to self study.
Waste of time.
shes a really good teacher. maked calculus easy. she explains it to you like you are 5 years old and i LOVE it
Miriam is awesome. She explains the subject and makes it very clear. She is very fair and gives partial credit if you at least try to figure out the information on the exams and quizes. Wonderful instructor, looking forward to 3B
I LOVE her. she is so sweet and teaches GREAT...I dont know whats wrong with that dude complaining about her. I know nothing about math and so she taught me how to do math!!!
The best math teacher at IVC, possibly the world?
She is a very good teacher. She explains the material very well. She loves teaching and has a great sense of humor. She is fair. You must work to get a good grade, but learning is fun with her.
The best math teacher I have had. Math is not easy for me, but she supported my efforts and helped me every time I asked for help. If you want to learn. Take her class, but be ready to work, work, work.
I'll admit she is definatly one of the better teachers at IVC. She LOVES what she does and she definatly knows her stuff. You have to work very VERY hard to get an A, and you absolutly must do all the homework AND understand it entirely. She is helpful but its alot of work. Every week there is a quiz and a maple project.
One of the better teachers at IVC. She is a very nice lady and is very helpful. She is also funny many times. Homework is online and mandetory. She uses powerpoint slides to teach. There is no need to take notes in her class. The slides are posted on blackboard. I LOVE HER.
OMG THE BEST MATH TEACHER EVER. I WENT FROMA D FROM MY PREVIOUS MATH3A CLASS THAT I DROPPED TO AN A IN HER CLASS. SHE'S VERY COMPASSIONATE TOWARD HER STUDENTS AND SHE IS ALWAYS WILLING TO HELP. VERY FLEXIBLE! I JUST WISH SHE WAS TEACHING 3B NEXT SEM. I WOULD SOOO TAKE HER AGAIN!
Mariam is a helpful instructor, But you should study at least 10 hours per week to pass her class.
The best teacher ever! I would take every math course with her. You have to work very hard in her class, but you definitely learn. She is fun and grades evey paepr IMMEDIATELY. It is impossible not to like her. I highly recommend her.
The best teacher at IVC, no exageration! I got a B, but still think that I learned in her class more than in any other math class. I wishe she would teach all my math classes.
Seriously one of the best teachers at this school.
She is a great teacher and it is very easy to get an "A".
Best teacher ever!!! If you want to learn, take her class. Nobody like her in the entire world. Lots of work, but enjoyable class.
I like her way of teaching. You work in her class everyday. She grades all papers fast, including exams. Best teacher ever!!
Best math teacher I have had. Explains well, helps students, grades papers. She is a wonderful person. Take her class.
She was the cutest thing. Really helpful. Do all the homework when she assigns and don't forget about Maple. It is easiest to get a running start, and then you can do well. I am defiantly coming back to take another one of her classes. Sit in the front in the center!
Her accent sometimes made it hard for you to understand what she said. I don't really understand why we had to spend so much time on the entire Maple work since she did assign a lot of book problems for us to work on (she should have handed out much more specific guidelines on how to do Maple, so we didn't have to spend so much time on it.)
Not a good teacher. I teach myself and waste my time going to her lectures. Arrogant and self centered.
She is the best. Students that fall behind don't enjoy her class and complain. You have to keep the pace and do the work assigned if you want to get a good grade. This is my third course with her. Once you take a class with her, you are hooked. The complainers should take classes with other teachers.
A very good teacher. Cares about her students learning. Grades papers all the time. Wants students to work hard to learn well. Must do all work to get good grade. Highly recommend her if you want to learn not just easy grade.
study ur assoff! castrocronde is a pain hard as hell but has so much knowledge about the advance mathematics. its amazing!!! She will always say when class is struggling " I LIKE IT!"!!!!!!
She is good teacher. If you are taking her class, get ready to have no weekend if you want to get an A in class.
took honors class. the class work was pretty hard at times. But most of the test questions were DIRECTLY from homework questions (so do them!). cant remember about the quiz... really nice though and helpful. Maple projects are so-so, but they help you grade a little bit. power point lectures were BORING.
I do not know what to say. She is simply horrible!
I hated this class! She literally killed all my interest in Math! If you take this class, you have to listen very carefully because she can't speak English! And on top of that her exams are hard and you have to study your ass off to finish assignments! DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS! I think she is the WORST teacher at IVC!!
She is verry good teacher!! I strongly recommend her!! Fantastic teacher at IVC!!
Thorough, helpful, and very intelligent. Understand everything thoroughly, or else she will find it in her brutal exams. Recommended for math majors, and nobody else.
Great professor. Lectures are organized and focused. there's a lot of work in the class but Mrs. Castraconde is very helpful.
Pretty nice lady, very approachable. Diff. Eq's takes a lot of effort to do well in. If you want a good grade do all the homework and participate in class.
I really good teacher, but you have to work to earn an A in her class. Available during office hours, willing to explain as many times as needed. As she says, don't fall behind. If you want an easy A, take the another class.
she is def not an easy teacher but she is willing to spend time to help you and explain every step to you. her tests are exactly same as worksheets and quizzes but you still have to work your butt off. if you are willing to work hard and learn something, you should go for her
she is the most clear teacher ever, i wish she taught chem too. her tests are based on the worksheets that are done each class meeting. She has quizzes once a week which are based on worksheets and somewhat homeworks. the homeworks are very very helpful if you do them on time. she doesn't collect homework. but she collects worksheets which are 10%
she's not that helpful, and she explain unclearly. Take her if u'r good at math.
What a waste of time that was. If she gets her nose out of her Powerpoints maybe she will pay attention to her class.
Those that complain about her are the ones that do NOt do the work and expect a good grade. If you do the work on time, go to her office hours, and take the class seriously, getting an A is not hard. She is a really good teacher. Helps students a lot and makes math easier to understand.
She is great! You get to work in class every day. She grades your work every day. She explains stuff well and helps you all the time. Too bad she wont teach 253. I would take her class if she did. She makes math seem easy.
She rushes through things. She hops around to explain kinda disconnected. I did not like her. And I could not understand what she says.
getting an A is not hard until you do exactly what she asks you.the worksheets in the class are really helpful.she doesnt care if you dont care about your grade because she thinks it is not her job to get students to work but if someone ask for help she is there and more than happy to help.very smart person!just the accent is a little bit annoying.
I took pre calc, and calc 2 with her, i got a D in pre-clac and dropped with a w in calc 2:D She's a very nice lady and helps alot but she made me hate math, if you dont love to study math 24/7 dont take anything with her. if you're already good at math then you'll be fine. Trust me you won't get an A in her class.peace!
Took her for calc 3b, 4a and DE. If you can't hack these classes like I see a lot of you complaining about AND you are planning to major in physics or math, just change your major to business right now. Miriam is one of the most clear, helpful math professors I have ever had, OVER prepared me for UC.
(24)It bothers me that she's the only one teaching differential equations. It's very strange that she will waste the lecture time answering questions about the Maple project, which is wasting full-time students' time. Who made the book choice anyway? UCI is using Diff. Equ. & Their Appl. by Martin Braun. That's a better book (and cheaper, too).
I do not get it! I was stuck taking all my upper division classes with her. I made it through. Not a good teacher. Now I am done with math they hired a new guy who I heard can teach. Oh well!
I'm 1 of her fans & hate 2 C her being rated as "B" teacher bcause her brain, heart, & work ethics R A+. Yet, I often wonder maybe I could skip her lectures & just read the textbk. She needs 2 work on her delivery. Right now she isn't "translating" the material 4 her students. I'm v hardworking & always got A+ in math until now. I'm v frustrated.
To do well in her class you need to do EXACTLY what she tells you to do. I was struggling until I followed her instructions to the T. Getting an A in her class is possible.
She's not as easy as these ratings say. You have to put a lot of work into her Pre-calc (math 2) class... Definitely not an easy A. The quizzes are difficult. She's a really nice and helpful lady. If you're willing to put in the work, take her because she's fun! If you want to SLACK don't take her!
I took Math 2 and Math 3A with her, but couldn't take Math 3B. Now I know how good of a teacher she is! Nobody works like her. She cares about her students, grades more papers than anybody else, and is always available. I will take my next math with her. She is the best!
I love her class. For the first time i look forward to the class work. Even if I don't know all the stuff, the worksheets are so useful. I will take 3A wit her she is # uno.
boring class time. all your gonna be doin is the suggested exercises if u want an A.
She has a one quiz and worksheet every week, but they are helpful in keeping you on track. Lectures are fairly clear. Her enthusiasm during lectures really precipitates into students making the class more interesting. Tests are difficult, but if you study, you can get an A.
If you study, you can get an A or B.go to math lab! The only bad thing is that she never curves, even when the whole class gets a DOverall nice teacher
She doesn't curve if your life depended on it! Mid terms are not easy but the final is all questions picked from the 3 midterms, so make sure that you study all the forms for the 3 midterms with the keys posted.Good teacher with good personality, but lectures are confusing.Need outside help to pass.
Prof. Castroconde is a wonderful teacher. Very sweet. She keeps you on your toes with projects, quizes and worksheets. As long as you do your work you will get the grade you want. She is extremely helpful. SHAME ON ANYONE WHO MAKES A COMMENT ABOUT HER ACCENT. HER ENGLISH IS PERFECT.
Getting into Prof. Castroconde's classes is like getting a ticket to the hottest rock concert in town. Warning: get in line THE FIRST DAY. And prepare to work your behind off. Getting an A is possible. I agree with one of the reviewers before who advised others: to follow Prof. C's instruction on how to study to the T. Great role model!
I hate to say it but she was a waste of time. Not a tough grader if you can bite your lips and stay in her class. If you can not get anyone else, take her if not, AVOID HER AT ALL COST
I took math with her since 3B. I know she doesn't explan math concepts very well in lecture so go to her office hours. They are extremely helpful. Exams are based on qizzes and HW problems. One more good thing is she does not grade it hard. partial credits are generous.
I think she is the best math teacher at IVC. If you want to learn, not just get a grade, she is the teacher to take. Work and keep the pace. People who complain about her are those that don't do the work, but expect a good grade anyway. She is a VERY nice person.
Castroconde is articulate and understanding. I did not do any of her assigned homework and still managed to understand the material. I got a B in this class but most likely because I have taken pre-calculus three times before that. Her worksheets are very easy but her quizzes are a little harder. Just ask for help and this class should be a breeze.
I love her in class worksheets. They help you learn the material and allow you to work with other students and ask her questions if you don't understand. Her power points are gold! I think she is the best!!!
I also like the worksheets and power points. I go to her office hours. She is VERY helpful. If you keep the pace, you learn the material. Don't fall behind!!! GREAT teacher!
I pretty much taught myself. Enough said!
I really like the way she taught the class. If you are not good at taking notes, she has a powepoint notes which are very helpful. Her exams are right out of the worksheet and quizes. If you just do the HW and come to class everyday and try to do her worksheet by yourself then class is very easy. I never thought i would get an A in this class.
She is great at teaching the material and really wants to help you succeed. This was probably the most difficult class I've taken at IVC. It is possible to get an A if you really try hard. If you got a B, you probably didn't put enough effort into the class. You can't just slack off and expect an easy A in this class.
If you have a little bit of will to study, she would be the best teacher. She is very enthusiatstic and helpful those who wants to learn. Explanation is very clear and easy to understand. Attendance is mandatory. Personally I love her personality toward students. As I heard, from now on, she may not teach for Math2. Meet her for Math3A,3B :)
Absolute waste of time :(
I agree with the previous comment. I taught myself.
She is definitely different..not my favorite and I will not take another math class with her. She is more theoretical than anything and her notes are pointless and REALLY long. Difficult class and not the best teacher for the job.
I was stuck with her for calculus two semesters. Don't get it! She primarily teaches upper division even though she does not know how to. What a waste of time!
I never got a good grade in math before! She is a great teacher, helps students understand, and gives lots of tools to learn. The work in class is the best. I met students and work with apartner as she suggested. It paid off. She is te best!
I also took Int. Alg. over the summer with her. I found her to be a very good teacher. For the first time I enjoyed going to a math class. I met other students, formed a study group and did well in the class. She encourages group work, gives lots of handouts and is very helpful.
I am taking ma third math class with her. She is the BEST!!! I have done very well in her classes becuase she motivated me to do my best. If you do ALL the work, keep the pace, and work with other students in the class, you learn to love her classes. Go to the tutoring center also.
I do not get it. Why are we stuck with her in all upper division classes. I will try to avoid her but it is hard. Not too many choices.
I think she is a very good teacher. She cares about her students, is avilable for office hours and helps a lot. Students need to do all the work ssigned. I took Gupta for 4A and went back to Castroconde. NOBODY like her.
OMMMG avooid at all costs!! i am in her class now, i wish i took it with someone else ahh shes terrible =(((((( take it with daschlager or erbas white, i wish i did =(
don't listen to whoever complains. They just weren't paying attention in class. Her lectures are very organized and help you grasp the material! She works at math lab too which a double plus cause you can ask her questions outside of class. I have an A right now so take her!! Better than Erbas White definitely.. I dropped her class like it was hot!
This woman is a total waste of time.; Avoid at all cost. Take Erbas or Chen
I know who wrote the complaints about Castroconde. they took 3A with easy teachers than don't care if you learn or not. But if you want to learn, take her class. She knows the stuff and helps you during office hours and during tutoring time. Her worksheets are great! YOU NEED TO WORK TO EARN A GOOD GRADE. Slackers stay away.
Be prepared to do work!!! If you want to do well on tests study the quiz's and in class worksheets. She gives you questions that really test your knowledge of the material. Make sure to re-study homework problems before the test, focus on the hard/tricky one's not the easy one's. She's not an easy teacher so u better work hard if your signing up!:)
I just finished my 3rd class with her. I love her style, her sense of humor, her worksheets and her power points. She makes easy learning math and she encourages you to work with others. I have made friends in her classes and together we study not only math with other commond courses. You have to work, but it is worth it!
I have taken a math class with her every semester since I started at ivc. I will miss her! I can't believe it, but I enjoyed going to her math classes, working in groups and at the tutoring place. Take her classes if you want to learn and do ALL the work.
I have taken 3 upper-division math classes with Miriam and I can say she is the best math professor I have had. She is not easy mind you, but, she is a great teacher. Challenging but not daunting. She wants you to learn the concept and not the labor of math, but you have to do the labor to get an A :p this way my hardwork was rewarded and I learned
awesome
just take her. you will be happy
I do not even know how I got a good grade. All I can say I did not learn it from her.
She is the best calc prof at ivc! Teaches very well and all her exams are fair-not trick questions.Just study the quizzes and wrkst and you will be fine. Homework is a must tho! She is very helpful and always happy to help her students. Teaches math with a passion. Never bored in her class-JUST TAKE HER!
Phenomenal professor. Her method will teach you the subject matter extraordinarily well. Math requires work, those who complain are just looking for the easy way out.
Are you kidding me? She is awful.
Homework isn't mandatory, but if you don't practice Calc at home, YOU WILL FAIL NO MATTER WHERE/WHO YOU TAKE IT. There is a Quiz or worksheet EVERY class session, so don't miss class. Quizzes/Worksheets=15%, Each Midterm is 15% and Final is 40%. Will replace lowest test score with grade received on Final if it's higher. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND HER!
she is an angel. just study and you will do more than great. Fair exams. The best teacher!
she really loves math and tries to explain well. study the wksh's and ull be fine.fantastic teacher!
Not good. Not good at all!
She is the best Calculus teacher at IVC. You have to attend class everyday because of the worksheets/quizzes. What she teaches in class and what she assigns for HW is what you will see on the Exams. You have to study alot but I highly recommend her!
TAKE HER! She is amazing! First math class since like 8 th grade that I was able to get an A. She has her quirks, and is pretty stubborn about things being her way. BUT if you just do what she says and make sure you actually pay attention you'll do fine. Anyone who says they don't like her probably just struggles with math in general. TAKE HER!
She may be good in calculus but she sure sucked in our class.
Horrible teacher, got a decent grade but i have never had to work so hard in my life. She missed an entire week of an 8 week summer class then decided to not show up the day of our final review.
Hardest 8 weeks of my life, but totally worth it. Crystal clear lecture, good communication, listens to students' suggestions about the curriculum. She did miss a week of the course, but was apologetic AND she was there for the review past the allotted time.
Miriam is easily one of the greatest teachers I've ever had. She really enjoys teaching and puts a lot of effort into the class. I took an 8:30 am class which I never do just because she was teaching it.
Anyone who doesn't like her must be crazy. I look forward to her class. I will only take a math class if she is teaching it. A's are achievable if you put in the work. I've gotten an A every time.
If I could understand her maybe I would learn something. At all costs avoid her.
Amazing professor. Consistent diligence is necessary to succeed, but when the class is done, students are very well prepared. Choose Miriam if you really want to know the material when you are done.
I enjoyed Miriam a lot. She is a great professor, not only extremely intelligent, but also a great professor. Your grade really depends on you, if you put in the work you will get an A or B in the class, if you slack, you'll fail.
Quizzes/worksheets every class. Tests are fair. Drops two lowest quizzes and worksheets. Replaces lowest test score with final. She treats you like an elementary school student, so she can be bit annoying. Teaches out of PPT. I learned from her ppt lecture, not her. LOTS of time&effort required. I wouldn't recommend her.
She tries to help but at no avail. I'd rather take it with someone else. I can not relate to the way she teaches. I just can not put my finger on it. She is just not all that good.
On the downside, you get quizzes and worksheets every class period. So that means class is mandatory. But then again she drops the lowest quiz and worksheet grade. All in a nutshell: her quizzes are like the worksheets, exams are like those two combined, and the final are like the exams. If you don't put the work into it. You won't get an A.
She is very good. Students need to work consistently. If you want to learn, do al the work. She prepares you for the next level. This is my second class with her. You can tell who took Precalc with her and who didn't. Those who did, know the prereqs down
I just finished my 4th course with Miriam. I am going to miss her! I learned so much from her: about math, about life, about work ethics. She is the best prof at IVC. You earned your grade, she teaches the class and guides you. Looking for a good teacher? Miriam is the answer
Her grading is unfair especially partial credit. Lectures doesn't make sense since she talks and writes very fast. If you want a good grade in her class I recommend you read the text before lecture, do homework, do worksheets, and attend office hours.
The only thing that I can say is "she is the best ever".
Her grading scale is very fair. I had an F in the class, studied my butt off for 3 days for the final, and ended up with a B on the final and a C (73.1%) in the class! My grade probably would've been higher had I managed an A on the final and didn't make calculation errors, though, but oh well.
I want to add to my previous comment that I wasn't lazy and that's why I had an F in the class--it just took me a lot longer than the rest of the class to understand the concepts (though once we got to derivatives, antiderivatives, and integrals, I understood those immediately!). :)
I got As in Algebra & trig but got a C in precalc. it is NOT just a review of the material, so dont take this class for granted! Miriam is an EXCELLENT teacher, very responsive and really explains the conceptual to help you understand the material. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Final replaces the lowest test score.
Not helpful at all. Grading not fair. You teach yourself. Not recommended.
Attendance is mandatory; worksheet/quiz every day; 2 exams and final. She's very strict when grading. Even if your answer is right, she marks you down if you forgot a step. She's not always clear, but she really tries to help you. About half the class dropped. Even with prior experience in Calc, this class was difficult. Much Time/Effort required.
She is a very nice person. and her problem that she is a genius. i recommend her for anyone who has time to study at least 5 hours aday just for math. there is a worksheet and a quiz every week and no hw. on the other hand hw is helpfull. shes great but i honestly think that she grades differently for students. If your smart she will help you
Not half of the class dropped! Of 60 startin, over 50 are still taking the class. You have to work, as expected for a 5 unit class and you can't follow behind, but she is really a good teacher. Be prepared to work. You will earn your grade. I stayed in her class because I will be prepaed for the next. An easy grade is not worth it.
She is a very good teacher, but students need to work. She grades papers fast, is available and likes to help. Not an easy A, but definitely a learning experience. Take her class only if you want to learn and have time to do the work.
she is a good teacher. very easy in the beginning but in the last 2 months she crams everything in. The other week she did 7 sections in one day. although I did get the subject it was hard to understand at first. and she doesnt put the taylor or mclarins series on the final. just pay attention and you ll do fine
I do not know what to say. Avoid her at all cost.
To succeed in Castroconde's class, there are several things that you need to do. First, you must religiously attend her lectures. Without consistently attending her lectures, you'll fall behind. Secondly, you're going to have to devote a good amount of time and effort to be successful in this course: don't think you can Ace it without hard work.
The best teacher at IVC. You need to work to get the A, but you really learn. I have taken several classes from her. I can tell who her students have been. They know how to work and know the stuff.
Great Professor. Clear lectures and fair tests. Miriam has a unique personality that puts some excitement within the learning process. Very helpful during office hours. Definitely recommended
Castroconde really loves math, but be prepared for her accent. I had a some trouble at first, but I think it was because I wasn't expecting it. Do the "optional" homework (it helps) and redo the tests, quizzes, and worksheets she posts on Blackboard because she sometimes reuses those questions. Don't be afraid to ask questions if you have them!
Very helpful and very lively, her spontaneous attitude has kept me awake like no other math teacher has. I never had to buy the textbook and just copied pages from the library copy for homework. Has helpful online powerpoints. Quizzes every other week, easy if you do the homework and study. Exams are harder because they are cumulative.
Her tests are fair, but man are they hard. She'll throw you some things that NOBODY remembers like the half angle identities. She's a great teacher, but other professors are much easier. She also covers sections that other professors don't. More material to cram on top of the already hard material... This will be my first B in a math class.
Great Professor, probably the best I've ever had. Gives 5% extra credit on the final if you study at the math lab, and your final covers your lowest test score. I really enjoyed her class and I wish I could have more classes with her.
The problem is that she thinks she is good. I really have hard time understandindg what she says. And she did not prepare me for UCI. I had to learn everything again when I got there.
She tacks on (literally) the hardest section in all of Stewart's book at the very end of the semester. If you manage to learn this section, which is as difficult as learning Mandarin or something, you will have NO time to prepare for the final. No other professor teaches this section. Curve/EC only benefits those who did well in the first place.
Definitely take any course you can with her. I had 3B and 4A with her and enjoyed myself the entire time. She's very nice and helpful. Definitely the best professor I've ever had. Also she gives extra credit for studying at the mathlab, and there is no curve.
Very mediocre. Very thick accent. Somewhat fair. Not recommended.
Excellent teacher and very helpful. Got a lot of help during office hours. Gives many examples and her worksheets help a lot. I made good study friends. We will take 3B with her nextfall and we plan to keep studying together. Take her if you want to learn.
You teach yourself. She thinks she is good. I do not recommend her.
Waste of time. Read your book and learn.
Worst professor ever. If you are out of mind you would take her class. She assumes all students have already taken this before. As she always says in class, she is MEAN! She doesn't know how to teach. No matter how much you study, you'll not do good in quizzes and exams. This a difficult class.
I think she is a very good instructor, but you have to work to earn your grade. She returns papers graded the next class, post solutions, is very helpful during officehours. I do reccommend her, but keep up with the class.
This is my 3rd class with Miriam. She is tied for the best math teacher I have had. She understands math. She gets excited about math. Lastly her accent is not too thick for me to understand. If a teacher is enthusiastic that is all I can ask for.
Dont take her class based on reviews! I did & I regret it. I was talking w my friend about her rating, they told me she puts good reviews for herself. I couldn't believe it, but when I read her reviews again, I found out she does & thats a shame. make sure to read the book carefully before the lecture, otherwise you dont get anything in class.
I have no complaints about her accent, I could understand her just fine. She is very intelligent, but this is a tough class. I barely got an A. You have to put in extra effort, go to office hours, and study. She loves to help and is really clear. Advice: go to office hours frequently & ask questions on your missed questions for quizzes/tests
Very average. Incomprehensible. Clueless about how bad she is. Do not take her. Want to ruin your GPA then go ahead.
Makes too many mistakes. Tests are right out of her work in class if you can put up with her and attend. There are way better alternatives. I would avoid her at all cost.
I really enjoyed her class, she is really on top of what she is teaching. if you do the hw you are guaranteed to get an A. every week there is a quiz which is almost exactly like hw problems or the questions that she solves in class. midterms are even easier than quizes but there are lots of questions same with the final test
One of the greatest math professors I've ever had. Will not hold your hand through class and will make you work for your grade, which is expected at higher level math. Quizzes are harder then test which is good because it means you'll constantly be studying in order to do well. Lectures are very stimulating. Likes to challenge her students.
12 quizzes, 4 project ,3 exam, final. She drop 2 quizzes, but no extra credit opportunity. I was able to get an A, but it took so much effort to make it. quizzes are hard because it is not straight forward, and project is just time consuming. However, Exams are somehow fair. Overall, I don't recommend taking her unless you have time. Good luck.
Not impressed. I taught myself.
I think she is way below average. My major is computer science. I had to take the class. If I did not teach myself I would have failed. She thinks she is smart and acts that way. I could not take it. I tried to skip classes and somehow made it. Do not take her if you want to learn.
Not very good. Tries to help but not capable. Taught myself. Will take Gupta next.
The problem is that she thinks she is a good teacher. She gets lost in her own explanations. She makes mistakes. Thank God I taught myself. I tried office hours. Again no help there. She does not know how to teach. I think she rates herself. I can't believe anyone thinks she is any good.
Castroconde's quizzes challenge you to study more and push yourself until you really understand the concepts.
Even though I attended class regularly I thought her lectures were confusing. Tests were fair but I cannot really tell I learned much from her. There are way better teachers at IVC.
Professor Castroconde kept me interested with her humor and awesome accent. She is really animated in lecture and is obviously passionate about "math fun". She has prepared powerpoints to compliment her lectures, and quizzes are harder than the exams - which are fair. If you do the homework you will pass, likely with an A. I plan to take her again!
Did not learn much.
Great person, but not a great lecturer. If you put in enough effort, you should not worry about tests or quizzes.
Professor Castroconde is probably the nicest, sweetest, most positive person that you will ever meet at IVC. I took 3A with her and I'm taking 3B with her as well. Her tests are completely fair and you can easily get an A by just going over her lecture notes. Trust me, you will not regret taking 3A or 3B with her (other courses I don't know!)
Very easygoing and helpful if you approach her with any questions you have. Worksheets are slightly more difficult than exams. It's easy to pass exams with minimal studying (as in 2 hours for the next 2 days before the day of the text). Therefore it's possible to pass class with a B+ at least, or even an A-.
Despised her with a passion (coming from someone who LOVES math) If I had not taken Calculus before in highschool, I probably would have failed. She REALLY DOES NOT KNOW how to teach. 2 hour lecture but she went over at most 5 examples. She was not very helpful, not clear at all. Super harsh grader. Avoid her at all costs, trust me.
She is really friendly and helpful. every week one quiz and one worksheet which is good because in worksheets we can solve the problems with other students, and she helps too. I liked the way she taught, simple language and no stress. If you do the homework and attend the class, it is an easy A. Really organized, and gives the grades very fast.
Not a good teacher. The problem is she thinks she is. I did not learn much. I would take someone else next for sure.
She is a great professor. I'm math stupid and I was able to pass Math 3A. Obviously I had to work my butt off. Castroconde understands the subject and explains it so it's easy to understand. Trust me, if I can learn and pass her class so can you. Do your work, use the math lab (extra credit), study, do homework. She replaces an exam with the fina
SHE IS A NICE PERSON
shes great just take her trust me
Miriam is very engaging in her lectures but only if they helped at all. A quiz every day was hell and she never really made herself available for that reason. She is not willing to work with anything, everything that is in the syllabus/schedule she sticks to no matter what. Exams are really difficult but final is not that bad, just review past exam
Castro is by far my favorite math professor. She is the most organized and hard working teacher. She cares about her students very much and will do anything to help them if they seek it. Her lectures are very clear and she goes over everything that you need to know. There are a lot of quizzes and worksheets but in the end they help your grade.
Her class is pretty straight forward. You attend class, take notes. Do her impossible worksheets, Take daily quizes.. and prepare for the tests. Her quizes were based on the worksheets, and the tests were based on the quizes. If you want an A you will have to work for but but its possible. I would love to take her again.
For Math 3A, it is an easy A class. Her exam is really easy as long as you go over all the notes carefully. She won't check the homework , but you'd better do it to help with understanding. Overall, she is good!
Getting an A on her class will be fulfilling. She is caring, dedicated, and an amazing lecturer. Her class might be difficult, but she is one of the few professors who will naturally encourage you to keep trying. Thank you so much professor.
She is a nice person. She can't/doesn't know how to teach.
This woman knows her stuff. I've had math teachers who simply go over the examples in the book; she'll take numbers on the fly from students and work it out on the board, no matter how ugly, because she understands what she is doing and is able to communicate that.
This professor is so funny and very willing to work with the students. If you are coming from high school to take a math 3A class, I would recommend to not take honors unless you took AP Calc or have a SOLID background in the topics of calculus. Every week, we have a quiz (on ur own) and worksheet (w notes and student/teacher help). Easy C, Hard A.
Worst professor ever! Quiz every week and one time she said the quiz is going to be on section 5.1 but the whole quiz is from section 5.2, which she didn't even finish 5.2 in previous lecture. For test, she called an average of 69 a "good test" for her because she is trying to keep the average around 70 I guess. So thinking twice before taking her!
She's the worst math teacher I've taken for math at Irvine Valley college.
Seriously one of the best math professor! I don't know why she has so many bad reviews, but she really does care for her students and clearly knows how to teach. Her weekly quizzes and worksheet might seem like hell, but they really do help you not to procrastinate and get behind in class. Plus, some of the problems are very similar to the exams.
Another amazing semester with Castro. No, she is not easy, she wants you to understand the concepts. But the next math class will be easier because you took her and you wont struggle like the other students. She gives partial credit. Weekly quizzes, 4 projects(easy), 5 exams. Everything is laid out and organized. Its worth the effort.
Amazing professor. Really hard working and makes the class easy. Her test are fair with no surprises and she does her best to make material easy. Loved her
Professor Miriam Helped me through this course, even though I took no trig nor pre-calc. You should do the suggested hmw, review the worksheet and quizzes and know your trig and you will pass.
I love this lady. She is sweet and you can def get an A or B in this class if you try. she's like my grandma.
Fantastic professor for Differential Equations. Quizzes once a week keep you on your toes and make sure you're continuously studying. When tests come, you feel prepared since you have already studied for the quizzes. Learning how to use Maple will help you a lot in this course. Her lectures are also great. Very organized, on top of it, and sweet.
She's a very organized teacher and provides everything you need to do well in the class. There are daily quizzes however if you just read the notes and maybe go through some of the homework you'll be fine. The quizzes and projects(which are easy) also boost your grade a lot. Overall, a simple, straightforward class.
Her class is not that hard like the rumors say:) The problems in the textbook are even harder than her problems in the exams:) If you want an A, just do optional hw in the textbook.
love her. if you are the type that needs extra help for math, go to her office hours. It helped me so much, because it's one on one and she explains the material in further detail and goes at a slower pace. she is a really sweet lady who is always willing to help as best as she can.
Classes are mandatory cuz every class has either a quiz or a worksheet to do, has a total of 3 exams and 1 final. Very organized professor, all her worksheets/quizzes are uploaded online, go thru each quiz & worksheet thoroughly before the exams, the questions are basically the same. GO TO THE OFFICE HOURS if you need to, it helps!!!
Fall 2018 was my third semester as a full- time student at IVC and she is the best, by a landslide, math professor I have had here so far. I am bummed I will not have her for Math 4A. Keep up with your homework and studying because you will basically recieve a grade for every lecture you go to because there is always a quiz or in- class assignment.
This class was relatively easy, but I'm used to math teachers that just tell you to do problems with no explanation. She is very clear in lecture and will hint at some of the things that are on the test. 1 wkst & quiz each week that are either harder than or reflective of the test material and 3 tests. Generous grader & gives points where she can.
One of my fav profs every. She is SO straightforward unlike so many prof these days which I love. She tests you on things you should know and direct concepts instead of trying to do the same thing in a harder way. Obv she is not easy but with practice and attendance to her lectures and organization of notes, you will succeed.
she is the best. highly recommended
love her! prof. castroconde is the best of the best! extremely intelligent and very passionate about math. explains the material in a way that is engaging. do the suggested exercises! quizzes and tests are easy but only if you know what you're doing.
Love her! Just keep up with the homework and visit her in office hours!
She is a amazing professor. I like her passion on teaching math. As long as you complete the homework and understand the concepts, this class can be super fun. Also visiting her in office hours helps me to clarify the concepts that she teaches in class. Highly recommend her.
Miriam is a great math prof! She takes time to answer questions and has fair tests and quizzes. Don't mess them up or fall behind, because it's really hard to catch up. Make sure you know your 3A/3B material, keep up, and PRACTICE/STUDY. If you take 24 right after 3B, it'll be a lot easier. If you know Calc I/II material well, you should be fine.
She is the best MATH professor!! Take her and you wouldn't regret
She was okay. Honestly, I had to teach myself everything. I have never had to work so hard in a math class before and her quizzes every week were really annoying.
Hands down the best math teacher at IVC
PROFESSOR CASTROCONDE IS THE BEST MATH TEACHER I HAVE EVER HAD IN MY LIFE! Trust me, TAKE HER! She helps me a lot during office hours and answers every bit of my questions! She explains everything very clear and very patient! Learn her class exercises, suggested exercises, quizzes, worksheets and you'll definitely pass this class with an A!
Miriam is one of the best professor that you can find in math. Her criteria are reasonable and interesting. She have quizes and WS to help you learn the materials. If you want an easy A, go elsewhere. Don't mess up with her, she is really respectful and caring to her students.
This professor is honestly based on what you like. Her grading style is that every week you have one quiz on one of your days, and a worksheet on the other. For the Exams, you have 3 exams and a final exam. She gives no study guide out but the tests were not all too bad. You just got to put in the work for her and you should be able to get an A.
Useless prof. Purposely doesn't teach all topics, tells you to go learn it yourself. Skips steps explaining, looks at you dumb for asking questions or being unable to answer hers. Only answers like 2 easy Qs about the HW per class, ignores harder Qs. I regret signing up for this prof because a robot would teach better than her.
Truly one of the best professors for math and just in general. She is SO knowledgeable and experienced. She managed the transition to online during covid perfectly. Miss you prof!!
