Chirico is an awesome professor! I wasn't sure that I'd get a good teacher for this, and she surprised me and made it so much more interesting that I'm now! taking her again for the next level class. She's also very intellegent and knows her stuff!
Dr.Chirico is very very smart and knows her****. Just do what she tells you to and you'll do well.
I can't stand her! I think she's arrogant and b**chy and makes each and every class a living hell. I received a good grade in her class, but she made it difficult because class was not interesting nor was it fun. Never again will I take Chirico for a class...EVER!!!
She is a really nice lady but tends to teach college as if it were elementary school. She's too strict on certain things.....actually on most things. But she does have a great appreciation and understanding of literature.
The exams are challenging. Make sure to post on WebCT or you will fail like I did. She gave me second chances but stands by what she says. Respect her and she will respect you. Don't wear a hat in her class. Oh yeah, make sure you get your own book and read for each class or you will be lost.
Chirico is funny and cool and if you didn't think so you were probably just too stupid to understand her. I worship Chirico, changed my goddamn life. Hell ya ****es. PEACE OUT. ;)

has too strict of an attendance policy. and she doesn't allow men to wear hats in class. ask intelligent questions, she may get flustered. sometimes the class gets awkward w/ some topics, she fosters "great" class discussions that usually get off topic. take her class seriously or she'll hate you.
She may be strict but she is extremly intelligent and can really teach you something, I enjoyed the time I spent in her classes
Prof Chirico is a bit like an old fashioned school marm. She's a bit weird and awkward sometimes. I had a hard time in her class. I was let down by her teaching. I had hoped to learn more. Just very disappointed. Try Pauley, McNeil, or Malenczyk. You'll learn a lot more and be treated better.
God awful! Needs to concentrate less on hats and more on teaching as if she were at a college! Really off on her own tangent sometimes; goes overboard on praising some students and loses focus. I had a good feeling before I took her class, but that went out the window. What a let down! Like taking a class with your mom!

Her attendace policy is overly strict, but her hat policy makes total sense. She understands and enjoys her course subjects (I had her for English 100 and Modern Drama) and she tries to engage her classes in intelligent discussions.

I do agree that her policies are too strict. I also agree that she’s kind of weird. I had a hard time feeling comfortable in her class. Seems like she has an answer in her head already, and if you answer her question the way she wants you to, she’s really mushy gushy. Hard to learn anything that way. Keep away. I did not like her.
I think some of you guys are being a little harsh. A 300 level class is not supposed to be easy, besides she knows the subject very well and she doesn't make you feel wrong no matter how odd your analysis of something is. I am currently in her class and I think she is a great teacher. She grades hard but gives you the opportunity to grow!
--hats aside, i'd avoid--
a nice lady overall but her class was alot harder than i expected. she definately wants you to take it seriously and get really into it or she doesn't like you. Thats how she made me feel. some ppl in the class were wayyy into it and i was just in the middle and she adores the ones who are obsessive about it!
Personally she needs to get over students not wearing hats...sometimes you just have a bad hair day...she also had an unclear teaching method...she will tell you something to write in notes and 5 seconds later forget what she had said..she also loves her sucks up...basically if you don't feel like kissing ass don't take the class
Knows the subject but has definetly biased views because she is a feminist. Not that feminism is wrong but she has girls read guys parts all the time and never has a guy read a girls part. She thinks she knows everything and is not open to new views on the subject matter. She also stereotypes people.
She is a really good teacher, but she expects alot out of you so if your interested in taking the class, be prepared for alot of work. She is hard grader on papers but it is worth it to learn from them.
By far one of the most rewarding classes. She is challenging but supportive and helpful. If you came to college to pursue a higher education, take a class with her.
By far the most rewarding class I have taken at ECSU. She is challenging and helpful. If you came to college to pursue a higher education, take a class with her! :)
Interesting subject matter, but her teaching style is a little awkward. She definitely has her favorites in class and spends a lot of time trying to win people over. She spends a lot of time trying to get people to like her. Overall just a little too intense and a little bizarre. If you show her you like her, she’ll like you.
The class material would be extremely educating and rewarding if the professor taught in a manner which was understandable and not ****. She shows favor to the males in the class, and i think its a sign when no one else signs up the class except eight people that you shouldnt sign up with her either. She chooses on her own whim who should...
she goes through her notes entirely too fast. half of the notes that are given are not even on the test so they are pointless. Sense of humor is very questionable. Very str8 forward and to the point. A no nonsense type of gal
I really enjoyed Dr. Chirico's class. She gave me my first B+ on a paper in college and I was upset. However she explained why and helped me on my next paper to bring it up to an A. She's tough but willing to help and passionate about her subject.
Great professor, very energetic and a great sense of humor. Wish I could have her for every English course offered. Drama is my favorite class, just keep up with the readings. Downside: exams are too complex for 50 mins; notes are scrambled and rushed, don't miss class if you don't have to or you'll be lost!
made us read books most of us had read in high school. BORING. never got our assignments back because they were due a few days before the final for this class. didn't hold my interest AT all.
I'm sorry, but truly awful in all respects.
Certainly one of the smarter professors I've come across at Eastern. She knows her stuff. She's very opinionated and HER answer is the ONLY answer, so just abide by that and you'll be fine. Kiss ass.
She definitely picks favorites in her class. She crams 2 hours worth of notes in 50 minutes and it is impossible to take all the notes. She is very picky with people being late and loves people who suck up to her. Her tests are hard and you must do all the reading or you will fail. Dont take this class unless you really love this subject.
She has no idea how to teach or think. she sucks and should not be a freashmen proff.
Dr. Chirico is criticized a lot, but from what I've witnessed, those who criticize her are typically the people who don't do well in her class for a reason -- themselves. She tends to be all over the place, but she is one of the smartest people I have ever met and she is a fair grader. It is not an easy class but not hard either. I recommend her.
Very Hard quizes but she tries her best to change them around so that they are a bit easier. Very nice, inteligent anf fair. Laughs alot. Don't wear a hat or come to class late!
I have had Chirco twice so far at ECSU, and I find her to be a good teacher in the classroom when she stick to her criteria. She knows her stuff and is clearly passionate about her work. However, she is cruel and rude when she singles her students out or when they go to her for guidance or help. Her grading is unfair; if you get a C, that's her B
Professor Chirico knows her subject very well but tries to fit a two hour lesson into a 50 min class. She is an unfair grader and not approachable when you need help. Keep track of your own grades because at the end of the year you will need to them to remind her you did the work. Show up to all the classes.
She's a very good teacher. As long as you show up to class and take notes and actually study them you should do decent. Also you NEED to read the plays and such. If you don't read you will not do well on the tests at all seeing as you need to identify who says what. Other than that she's a good teacher
She is really tough. I ended up getting an A- in the class, but I'm also an english major. If you weren't really all that into english and it's not your subject, DON'T take her course. She takes it much to seriously and tries to fit a three hour lecture into 50 minutes, which ends up being rushed, and leaving important material uncovered.
She is tough but funny. You don't have to be an English major to do well in the class, but you do a lot of reading. We read books and plays.Quiz every week matching character with quotes. There's an essay that is THE SAME AS THE WEEKLY BLACKBOARD ASSIGNMENT! Knowledge of Greek plays is useful, but not necessary. Very helpful and understanding.
Whips through her class. Be prepared to take notes and really listen to what she says. For the class an average week is read the play over the weekend, discuss the play and take notes on monday, write an essay based on her topic due wed morning, go over peoples entries wed, study for quiz, quiz on friday! don't miss a quiz! good luck
This Lady gets way too into Drama which is a pointless class to take anyway. Why learn about stories that didnt actually happen anyway? The plays are impossible to understand and the whole thing is just boring. Chirico is nice but very sarcastic and not funny when she tries to be. I wouldnt recomend this class to anyone..
She has a very fake personality, goes too fast during notes, her quizzes are too hard, and her grading policy is unfair. I would not recommend her for anyone at Eastern.
She's a tough grader. Stay focused and on top of assignments. Be prepared to answer questions, and do your reading. Basically, put in the effort that she asks for.
She is really kind of rude. She didn't remember my name all semester, but docked me points for misspelling Euripides after only a week with the material.
When I first met Dr. Chirico, I had NO interest in literature. By the end of semester I was reading almost everything I could get my hands on old and new. This woman is a wealth of information. She loves what she does, and so she does not give easy A's. Why would anyone want that anyway? If you have any difficulty, ask her, she loves to help.
Dr. Chirico is fantastic! Would definitely recommend her! She's super smart, and I loved the books we read in class!
Only allows 3 absences then she starts taking points off. Did that to me even though two of my absences were due to being admitted to the hospital. No extra credit, all tests are essay tests.
SUPER hard professor. Really helpful and knows what she is talking about, but getting above a C in her class requires A LOT of effort. I am about to be a junior in college and had never gotten below a B+ in any class up until I took her class. Taking a class with her has its ups because she taught me a lot, but it is a total GPA killer.
You need to work hard, attend all lectures, be on-time, and proofread your papers to receive high marks. I HIGHLY recommend taking Dr. Chirico if you wish to improve your lit. analysis skills and be fascinated. I found that most of the people who complained about her didn't put in the effort and felt entitled to receive an A.
If you are willing to put in the effort, then I would definitely recommend taking Dr. Chirico. Note: Some people get annoyed since she is not too great remembering names... Toughen up.
Gives you the skills needed to write argument. Supportive.
Honestly, I am a straight A student, I have a 3.87 GPA and never have had a teacher like this, her testing is ridiculous and expects a 600 word paper in 50 minutes along with a separate portion of test. Shes very disorganized and does not help you prepare for tests, shes a hard grader, very hard to get above a C, do not take this class with her
Chirico is definitely difficult. She does require you to have all your books and is very heavy on tests. I think if the class period was more than 50 minutes she would be a lot more successful in preparing students for exams. Other than that she is very critical of your papers and is a bit anxiety-inducing. Overall, difficult professor.
I had Chirico for my FYI class, and wow... I expected it to be an easy A, but nope, I had to work my butt off for that class. I would recommend not taking Comedy and Culture with her if you don't have to. I expected a funny class, but boy was I wrong... If you work hard you can get an A, but if you don't plan on trying, then don't take this class.
It is possible to get an A, HOWEVER, if you miss more than 3 classes, don't do the homework (there's soooo much homework), or do poorly on the exams (which are very difficult) you won't. The exams are very ambiguous so she'll always give you credit where she took points off. Unclear instructions on almost every assignment. BUT, she's understanding.
Chirico is a bit unorganized and can be all over the place. However, once you get used to her teaching style, she is quite engaging. You will have to work hard for an A, but it is possible if you do all the assignments and study for the tests.
I would not recommend missing this class with her because she covers a lot in a short amount of time and Never skip a reading because you will fall far behind, and always do your postings on time and also do reviews for the exams.
comedy and popular culture is NOT about comedy nor popular culture. strictly about political cartoons until the end of the semester where she talks about comedy for a few lessons. save yourself and dont take this class. its too late for me, but not for you if youre reading this.
Shes the worst teacher ever. Her assignments are made up and if she doesnt like the way you do she automatically fails you. She laughs at everything she says. Shes all over with the book.
She laughs at everything before she answers your question. If you forget your book in her classroom one time then she assumes you do not want to be in the class. Her grading is all over the place and there isn't a clear grading criteria. If you don't look at her in her throughout the entire class then she will assume you are disrespecting her.
She has a very fake personality, goes too fast during notes, her quizzes are too hard, and her grading policy is unfair. She laughs at everything she says so it is hard to follow along in class. She is all over the place in the book and she's always forgetting things. I would not recommend her for anyone at Eastern.
This professor has been a delight to have this semester. She always takes the time to answer questions and was easy to approach in general. Gives constructive feedback so you can improve if you're willing to put the effort it.
I've had Dr. Chirico for four classes. She has always been very friendly, knowledgable, & helpful. This class is a little outside of her normal literary analysis scope, but she did a great job of covering many topics in an efficient manner that was well suited to the class. I'd recommend this class for almost all majors, especially ENG, COM, & BUS.
Professor Chirico is a very nice and caring person. Her class was one of the more difficult classes I took this semester. If you put in the time and effort, you should do well but be warned that there is so much work that comes with this course.
Dr. Chirico has a good heart and if you don't pass that's on you because she helps her students in many ways. Though there are frequent assignments, they aren't hard if you actually do the work. She does pack a lot into one class and it can be overwhelming, but you get used to it. I enjoyed my time with Dr. Chirico, her literature choices are nice!
Don't take comedy & pop culture with her, it's not funny. 1st half is on old political cartoons, 2nd half is a play and a project on standup comedians. Not very personable. Quizzes are hard. You have to work harder than you should for an FYI. Only got an A because I went to makeup a quiz and let her try to convince me to switch my major to English
Great course! Dr. Chirico gave clear guidelines and examples for all assignments. She gave us feedback and the option to revise our work for a better grade. She was understanding, caring, and accepting of feedback from students to improve the course. I highly recommend taking any of her courses!
Her class was the hardest class I took freshman and sophomore year. It was hard to understand and analyze the poetry. Overall she's caring but a very strict professor.
I took comedy and pop culture, it was an easy class if you stay on top of your work. Her lectures do go kind of fast but she always posts them online after class for your convenience. I recommend taking her classes as long as youre a student who actually does your work.
I took FYI100 and you just have to show up for lectures and you'll do good. There's only about three essays throughout the whole semester and she gives great feedback on how to improve. There quizzes on the cartoon textbook, but she gives you multiple opportunities to improve your score if needed. I would definitely take her class again!!!
The class was great. The professor really knew how to teach the class and wanted everyone to succeed. It was a writing intensive class, but that helped to make everyone better and improve over the semester.
Great professor, great class. Do the work and you'll do great, too! Reach out to her if you have problems and she will make sure you get things figured out. She really wants everybody to do well.
Do not do this to yourself. There are better options. This FYI is so much more work than it needs to be. I enjoy english but the play you have to read for this class is so hard to understand. She was not helpful in this class and id rather not take her again. Personalities dont work too well together, but at least she seems like she cares.
I cant stand this lady. I want to rip my ears off when she speaks. I am in her fyi and it is ridiculously hard. There is so many assignments and there are so many better options to choose for an fyi. Do yourself a favor and dont take c&pc.
I am a freshman and this was the absolute worse class I could have chosen for my FYI. DO NOT TAKE HER COMEDY CLASS. There is little to no discussion about comedy, as it is mostly ananalysis of classic cartoons and plays. The work is unfair, as there are apparently no limits to how many words she can shove down your throat. Absolute worse FYI class.
DO NOT TAKE COMEDY AND POP CULTURE FOR YOU FYI100. This is one the worst classes I have ever taken and I cannot stand her. For your mental health, DO NOT take this course!!!!!!!!!!
DONT TAKE THIS CLASS SWITCH YOUR FYI ITS NOT WORTH IT!!!! It's not even about comedy you start with poli cartoons and she makes it mind numbingly boring. Then you get onto a book where you'll only understand if you read hamlet AND SHE DOESNT EVEN GO OVER HAMLET. She doesn't finish the lectures and requires way too much work for a non-major class.
Dr. Chirico can be very sweet but will assign a lot of work. The FYI class comedy and pop culture is not what you think it is. There is a lot of reading and essay writing that goes on in this course.
I decided to take comedy and popular culture for my FYI because I thought it would be enjoyable. It was not at all. She was my least favorite professor and it was extremely hard to go to her class. You can have an amazing paper (even one your aunt with a masters in English lit reviews) and it still won't get the grade you deserve. Do not take!
DO NOT take Comedy & Popular Culture! (Trust me. It was instant regret) Hearing Miriam speak makes me want to run into a wall. Laughs at almost anything that isn't funny, and if you don't have the same views as her, she will attempt to degrade and embarrass you in front of everybody, Also not the best class to start your day.
Don't take her if not an English major because shell treat you like one
Great person, not so much a great professor. Not the harshest grader, but it is not very likely that you will get a 100 on any assignment you do. I am fortunate that the class is taught by 3 professors, so my whole grade isn't determined by her, but it is stressful having your GPA in her hands as an honors student. Least favorite section in HON150
She was an ok teacher. Her class was very hard but if you are willing to put in the work, you can do well. I struggled for the first half of the semester, but reached out for her to get help and I did so much better in the class. She want you to do well, so reach out for help and you will succeed!
I liked taking this class with Professor Chirico. Attending class is a must because she explains the layouts of the assignments/writing styles with handouts and critiques student work. It can be time intensive, but I felt like I learned a lot. She wanted me to get the most out of my time at ECSU and even looked over my job applications and resume.
Nice person, not a good professor. She does not give 100's on assignments ever, and does not give good feedback when asked why you received a certain grade. Least favorite section of this course. It was boring and she thinks her class is most important, and we don't have work in any other classes to do. I will not be taking a class with her again.
By far one of my least favorite professor. Uses every textbook. Always gives out quizzes & homework. She doesn't help you understand the material. She isn't engaging with her students & her final is very hard. Her grading isn't fair. Her classes are for students who prefer to listen & read.
She is a nice person, but this is not a class to take. It is not what you think. The first half is about political cartoons, which was incredibly boring. The second is all philosophy. That was never in the description. It is not worth your time. She's nice but laughs at everything. and is really awkward. DON'T TAKE THIS CLASS
She is incredibly kind and cares about her students; She wants everyone to succeed inside and outside of class. She does assign a lot of assignments, most involve reading 50+ pages of books a night. So, be prepared to read. There are also a lot of papers and discussions each class. We had to write 5 papers for HON 361 and some were 3000 words!
very hit or miss professor. pushes students to think and become better academics, through very weird methods that put some people off. you can see the passion radiating from her and in a sea of unmotivated, lazy professors I will always respect that. I left her course with a greater appreciation for poetry. She needs to ease up on classroom rules
She is a tough grader and if your interpretation doesn't match hers then you will always be wrong. There are weekly quizzes and a blog post as well as two big papers a semester, but the workload wasn't anything crazy. If you put in effort and are prepared for class it isn't too hard.
Be prepared to read and have several homework assignments for this class. It was her first time teaching this course, so I understand certain choices she made, however I would not take her class again. She is a nice person, but I did not click with her teaching styles or assignments.
She is very nice but expects work really quick, takes significant points off our postings on blacboard if you turn it in past 4pm the day after assigned. Had to read hundreds of pages quickly. Expected a 750 word essay to be written during our 50 minute class period about a poem. Decent grader.
Dr. Chirico for Hon 150 is honestly an alright professor. She enjoys intellectual conversation and can help you grow as a critical thinker. However, the course material is really boring. She is a bit jumpy in class and has a lot of energy, allowing her thoughts to get scattered sometimes. Tougher teacher if you are more math or science oriented.
She's honestly just a lot. She can be very sporadic and disorganized during class time, but she is a respectable person. If you aren't an english major or enjoy that kind of stuff, you will have a harder time with this professor. It can be hard to follow (or care about) what she's talking about when she gets very passionate and intellectual.
Professor Chirico is an engaging lecturer, but the course material can be dry. While assignments are not easy to ace, Unstuck AI and the textbook can help with study prep. Overall, an average experience that challenges critical thinking.
While she is a wonderful human being, her teaching is not very neurodivergent friendly and can at times tend to be a bit on the ableist side without realizing it. Don't get me wrong, she is a good professor, but be prepared to be treated as someone who is in peak human condition with enormous amounts of brain capacity, despite it being otherwise.
My favorite professor. I try to take a class with her every semester. Each week we read a play, had a quiz, did a worksheet and short answer response in groups about the play so you definitely need to read to get a good grade. We also had a group project presentation, rlly easy. She gives great feedback and makes the class interesting. Easy A
Chirico's section of the class, while very interesting, requires you to think deeply about the text. She sets high expectations which seem unreasonable at first, but if you can figure out what she's looking for you'll do alright. She's tough, but reasonable and by the end of her section I came to enjoy it.
For non English majors she can be really difficult, she's funny and pretty passionate and a respectable professor her poetry class is not for the weak
