She's a great teacher! She's very interested in what she's teaching. Which makes class bearable. Her lectures are helpful, but I still used the book extensively to study for the tests. And she is very easy on the eyes...
Dr. Ferzli's awesome, but her tests are hard. Study, get a group, go to class, and if she offers any extra help -- take it.
She is an absolutely amazing professor. She truly cares about what she is teaching and is willing to help in anyway possible. GO VISIT DURING OFFICE HOURS. It will drastically improve your relationship/grade. I HIGHLY recommend her to anyone and everyone. P.S. Her tests are hard- study, study!
This class was hard not because it was hard conceptually but because it was hard for dumb reasons like taking quizzes on lab procedures which count half your final grade. Really don't appreciate quizzes telling me when to study and plus all those memorization noobs in bio have such an annoying in-it-for-the-points while the prof is so naiive.
Dr. Ferzli is GREAT! She is easy to understand, points out what you need to know, and makes the material interesting. She gives you lecture notes/outlines for each topic, study guides, and a practice test before each test. If you use the resources she has, it's easy to make an A! One of the best teachers at State! Take her for BIO 181 and 183.
She is awesome!
Definitely one of the best professors I had at state. She's great at explaining things so going to lecture is actually useful. Also take advantage of all the other resources she posts online like the study guides and practice exams.
Dr Ferzli is exceptionally nice, but very overrated as a professor. I was THRILLED when I saw that I had her for Bio based on the reviews here, but I regret taking her. She provides study guides and posts the lecture notes online, but the exams are still impossible. She doesn't like Moodle so you never know your grade for anything. Very frustrating
She was great, very interactive and attentive and always dressed to impress
She is just too awesome. You are sure to learn and enjoy Biology to the fullest. She is beautiful and that makes you even more interested in her. Make sure you visit her during her office hours. You are in for an ever-wanted surprise, then!
Dr. Ferzli is very sweet but I think she's overrated. She kind of talks in circles and her lecture notes/powerpoints are somewhat confusing. Her tests are really long and there are a lot of short answer questions so study hard! I didn't crack open my textbook once; don't bother buying it. I didn't put in much effort and got a B so it's not too bad.
Ferzli is an awesome teacher. She is really good at explaining things and is always enthusiastic about teaching. If you don't like the lecture setting i definitely recommend taking her scale up course it is really helpful. The only downside is that she does not post our grades online so you have no idea what your grade is over the semester
Dr Ferzli is a very kind, intelligent, Spanish woman. She explains things very well and is very methodical in her teaching method. She gives you lecture guides to wrote down notes on and practice tests. If you write down what she says and pay attention, you will do well. Study like you should and you'll do fine.
If you study the study guides and practice tests, you should be fine on tests. She's an AMAZING professor--always approachable, very thorough and clear, and loves getting to know her students. After having a different professor for 183, I can confidently say that she's one of the best in our Biology department. Take her for 181/183!
Good professor, very clear in lectures. Must be willing to put in the work but you will learn the material. I would recommend her classes and uses technology effectively. Definitely study the lecture notes that she posts and the practice tests if you have time. Wouldn't suggest purchasing the book because you never need.
She is very helpful and nice. Her tests are doable as long as you study and stay with the class. I had to read alot of things in the book because her voice was soothing that I would fall asleep if I hadnt gotten a lot of sleep.
Very good professor. Explains the material extremely well.
Dr. Ferzli is a great professor. She provides lots of helpful material like notes, study guide and practice tests. The course is kind of dry but she really tries to make it interesting. She cares about the students and though the class is not easy tries to help. If you have to take Bio 181 take her class!
Dr. Ferzli is a great professor. Having took AP Bio in high school, her class wasn't that hard for me, but her tests are long and can be challenging. She prepares you though for sure and she provides EVERY bit of material you'll need, she's awesome!! Best professor at NC State, take her bio scale up version too! So much better!
I took Dr. Ferzli for BIO 181 Scale Up. The course is hard, but Dr. Ferzli tries her best to make the information understandable. She's very nice and approachable. There were a few times I forgot/missed assignments, but after talking with her privately, she allowed me to make them up/extended the due date. Definitely take her!
Dr. Ferzli is a great professor that definitely knows all about her subject. She is very nice and approachable and will field any questions or concerns you may have. Her SCALE-UP class is great if you want to have a class similar to high school. She can rant sometimes off-topic but otherwise she's fantastic!
Very nice. Helpful. Knows what she is talking about. The tests are challenging but she gives you an outline to take notes that her tests are modeled after. Just study and you can get Bs/As on the tests.
Dr Ferzli's most-used quote in class: "Isn't that interesting?!" She really loves what she teaches and that shows in the fantastic lecture quality. If you fill out the lecture outline and make use of the Connect study modules, the tests aren't bad at all. She is very approachable and ready to help students outside of class.
Great teacher. Definitely knows what she is talking about and is very nice and helpful if you ever need anything or don't understand something. The class did get fast paced at times, covering LOADS of material, but if you put in the effort, you will do just fine. Dr. Ferzli is awesome!
Her teaching is straight forward, but her tests are ridiculously long and very tough. It feels like you are taking a final during every test. She also speaks in a condescending manner to her students as if you are inferior to her. ALWAYS BRING YOUR NOTES PRINTED AND READY FOR CLASS. She likes to pick out people who don't take notes/print them.
awful professor. does not test on concepts just trivia. really did not learn a thing
Dr. Ferzli is a great teacher, very helpful! The power points she uses are very beneficial.
Shes a decent teacher and very fair. She'll regrade your test if you think it wasn't graded well. But I have to say, I am REALLY annoyed that she doesnt really tell you your quiz grades. MAKE SURE YOU WRITE THEM DOWN EVERY TIME. I have good grades on all the tests, but no idea how I'm doing because she doesn't update her evaluations page, EVER.
Ferzli is one of the best professors I've had at State! USE HER LECTURE GUIDES. Do not try and study from the book, you are wasting your time. If you truly study and memorize her study guides before tests you will do well in this class. Also, take Scale-Up because I took lecture for 183 and Scale-up is a million times better.
I took Professor Ferzli for Bio 181 and decided to take her again for Bio 183 Scale-Up. She genuinely cares about her students and their futures and is a wonderful professor. The class is challenging and requires a lot of studying, but welcome to college. Anyone that says she is "impossible" simply did not put in the effort. Take professor Ferzli!
Dr. Ferzli is a pretty good teacher, but her lecture is extremely boring. Her tests aren't extremely hard but, there is a lot of memorization required. You need to start studying at least two days in advance to get a semi-decent grade. Try to take this class with a friend to make it less boring.
Dr. Ferzli is so passionate about biology and she really does have good intentions. With that said she only teaches with pictures so be prepared to pay attention and follow along with her. I struggled in this class because she only taught with pictures. Exams are ridiculously difficult for an introductory class, so be prepared to study hard.
Dr. F is a very friendly and optimistic professor, but is very difficult for an intro class. Her teaching style is best for very visual learners and her tests are very hard for an intro level class. I was left feeling like she had not provided the necessary information for the tests and expected students to already know the material.
Having taken Dr. Ferzli's intro to BIO classes, I can rant about several things. She is a very nice woman, with the best of intentions; HOWEVER, she flies through the material, has the most soothing voice to put you asleep, is not specific as to which material will be on the test, and refuses to curve lab. For best results, get into "scale-up".
I absolutely loved this course! Dr Ferzli is an amazing professor and human being. Please put in the necessary effort to earn a good grade.
Dr. Ferzli is a very nice lady! Her class can be difficult because of the large volume of material there is to be learned. If you know how to take and study for her tests you should be fine. I recommend making flash cards for everything on her study guide. It worked for me!
Boring- hard to follow- no clarity- waste of time.
She's really nice and explains concepts really well. Her tests are really hard though, so be prepared to study for a long time.
I absolutely loved her. I had her for the "Scale-Up" version of the course and it really paid off -- if you can take this section do it! She has a website with all of the PDF slides from her lectures, and provides you with note outlines, practice tests etc. If you just listen in class and study for the exams its straightforward. Overall amazing!
She is a fantastic professor, and super sweet lady. She knows her stuff and will go out of her way to help you. Not going to lie her tests are hard, and occasionally she will ask you questions you aren't expecting, but they are still pretty fair. If you actually want to learn something, take her. Be prepared to study though.
The class I took her for was for the first semester class for the PackTrack program and she is fantastic! She knows all of her stuff, and taking this class with her will really prepare you for research! The work load piles up at the end of the semester but she makes the class worth taking!
Ferzli is super enthusiastic about biology, respectful, and is willing to answer questions. Her class is difficult and her tests are long, but if you come to class and study regularly, it isn't bad at all. However, attendance is a grade (recorded by clicker questions) and the textbook (if you choose to use it) is a bit wordy.
I would recommend taking Ferzli to any incoming freshmen or anyone interested in taking an intro level bio course. I had her for both 181 and 183. She provides you with a study guide for every major topic you go over as well as a practice test and practice final. If you make use of all her resources you will not make below a B. I got an A in both.
This class was harder than it should have been. An intro level biology class should not be this difficult. Try to take anyone else if you can!
Sometimes her questions are vague and teaching methods make you feel like she is babying you or you''re in high school but hey maybe that''s a good thing. I mainly want to mention that if you are only taking BIO 181 in her class if you are in the SCALE-UP Section which you may not know until first day you dont use the book save 250
She is a really good teacher and if you put in the effort (more than I did) you can make a really good grade. Slacking off like me you can still pull out a C, but I could have gotten a B+A- if I tried more.
If you want an AA+ DON'T taking her class. Sure she's a great professor and you'll learn a lot in her class but for every test there're a few questions that were NOT covered in the class AT ALL. I've an A- test average despite EXHAUSTIVE studying. Forget reading the book its over a 1000 pages! Attendance is mandatory. AVOID!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lecture is easy but EVERY test is like a final. Test are strictly trivia. There're about 700 details you need for every test, around fifty of which aren't explicitly stated and require independent research. TEST ARE RIDICULOUSLY DIFFICULT!!!!!!!! Oh and you better buy the textbook now because god knows what details she'll quiz you on; AVOID!!!!!!!
Great teacher, you'll learn a lot and have a decent chance of making an A IF you devote tens of hours to decrypt and memorize the studyguides. Despite what she says, supplemental readings are necessary for an A. WAAYYY too much detail for an intro class, LOOK AT THE EASINESS RATING, premeds and GPA conscience persons AVOIDD!!! You've been warned...
Dr. Ferzli is an amazing teacher. She's willing to meet the needs of the student but her class is tough. Definitely makes students consider changing their major. Information is presented but very vaguely (especially for SCALE-UP). Everything is based on applied knowledge. Missing a day basically means you fail a test. Good luck.
good professor that teaches a tough class
The toughness of her class is directly proportional to her beauty!
Ferzli is a very nice lady but the class is very challenging. The tests are no walk in the park and require hours and hours of studying. I liked her as a person and she does explain things well, the tests are just extremely hard.
Her lectures are very boring, she covers a lot of material in one class so if you miss it, you will be behind. However, she is very organized and posts notes online. Tests are very tricky, requires a lot of studying. Tests are some of the only grades so you have to do well on them.
Dr. Ferzli is probably the toughest out of the Intro Bio professors, but she is probably the best teaching wise. I took SCALE-UP for both, which are recommended if you don't likewant large lecture classes. Make sure to study pretty regularly as her tests and quizzes are very detail-oriented. I couldn't imagine not taking her for BIO 181 and 183.
Best biology professor I have ever taken. She cares about her students success and will always put in time to explain anything if you dont understand. Go to office hours and get help. You can be very successful in her class if you just study and put in the time. I wish she taught other biology classes!!!
Dr. Ferzli was my favorite professor this semester! She was hard, and I spent WAY too many hours studying for her exams. But overall, I learned the most in her class. She expects a lot of effort to be put in, but it pays off. If you have a science, specifically biology, focused major I recommend this teacher for Bio181 and Bio 183!
She is SO hard. You will have mental break downs associated with this class. She is a good teacher but way to hard for a freshman class. Maybe this class would be tolerable if you also didn't have 4 other classes to keep up with.
Dr. Ferzli is awesome! I would recommend taking her class. Attendance is not mandatory but there are random clicker assignments that add up at the end of the semester. Tests are not too bad but if you don't study, you will fail.
Maybe it's because I hate Bio in general but this class sucks-the subject is extremely broad and tests are crazy difficult. Dr. Ferzli is a great professor, she just happens to be teaching a sucky subject. I would recommend taking her because she's actually a decent teacher. I'm just warning you, BIO 181 is not your typical college freshman course.
Test are hard. Study and you'll be fine. Go to lab!!!
Dr. Ferzli is probably great to somebody who loves biology. She is really passionate about it and she is a pretty engaging lecturer. BIO181 is a weed-out course so no matter who you take it with it is going to be stupid hard. That being said, Dr. F is probably your best bet because she makes it as interesting as she can and she is very helpful.
Dr. Ferzli is an extremely intelligent woman. Her class is really interesting, but I did notice her tests are a lot harder than all the other professors. I could study for 7 hours straight and still make at best a B- on the exam. Other than that, most of your other grades (participation, homework, etc.) will be 100's if you show up and at least try
She loves teaching and is very into her lectures. She is very organized and you can tell she loves what she does but, the tests are very hard. Make sure you keep up with the work!
Knows her stuff
Dr. Ferzli is my favorite professor at State. She's extremely smart and enthusiastic about Biology and it rubs off on her students. Her class is hard, simply because of the subject. She gives all the information and materials you will need to be successful. If you go to class and do the work you will know the material and will do well!
Dr. Ferzli is a saint! I missed the final exam and she allowed me to take it with her other section. That being said, she will go out of her way for her students. She is very clear on what material will be tested and her PPTs and practice tests are great help. I rented the book and didn't open it once--her provided material will be sufficient.
Really hard tests. Very detail-oriented and confusing lectures sometimes. Does have a thorough knowledge of the subject, however.
Dr. Ferzli is the professor you DO NOT want for this class. She makes her tests unnecessarily hard for absolutely NO reason. The lab system is messed up bc if you have a chill TA, you get easy practicals and labs. If you have a hard one, you'll get worse grades with the same effort. She makes special needs jokes in class and is very hard to follow.
Extremely hard class. Tests are basically impossible even if you study for hours and hours. Do not recommend taking her class unless you are extremely knowledgeable about biology. Even then the tests are extremely hard.
She's a good teacher and has good PowerPoints. She explains her topic well and obviously has a passion for it. Her tests aren't too difficult if you pay attention in class and use the study materials she gives. I'll be taking her Bio 183 next semester.
Dr. Ferzli is a great person. However, she doesn't seem to know that not everyone loves biology like her. Her class is very frustrating unless you love and know biology. Her tests r very hard, and can be very broad. She moves fast and isn't objective with her lectures. Like I said she is great, but it is hard to not get mad with her arbitrary tests
Dr. Ferzli is easily one of the best professors I have had. Now don't get me wrong you won't skate bin her class. But she gives you all of the tools to take on and be successful in her class. Spend some time and hit up her office hours and you'll be fine. But don't wait until it is too late for her to help you. Grades fairly and is approachable.
Although her lectures can put you to sleep, its clear that she has a super good understanding of the material and she's completely willing to work with you and provide as many resources as possible as long as you put in the work. The tests are pretty tough too.
Dr Ferzli is an amazing professor. She knows exactly what she is talking about and is extremely educated on the topic of Biology. She is also extremely passionate about biology which leads to her making fun lectures with random biology jokes. However, her tests require a LOT of knowledge. In the end, you will learn a lot but you have to work for it
This was the first Biology class I've taken in 10 years and I'm so glad I took it with Dr. Ferzli! The material is dense and her tests are very hard, but if you take her suggestions on how to study the material it will help you. She is always available to her students and sends frequent emails keeping you informed. Taking 183 with her next semester
Dr. Ferzli is amazing. I took her Scale-Up class and excelled. Her classes are very interactive. She gives you practice test and a key for every exam and they are very similar to the test, some times having the same problems. She gives partial credit on the written part of her exams. She gave us a lot of easy extra credit at the end. Take her class
Hard tests but Ferzli is very caring and accessible.
Dr. Ferzli is an amazing professor! I had never taken a biology class before but Dr. Ferzli's style of teaching and the high expectations she has for her students allowed me to excel. She cares about her students and genuinely wants you to get good grades. If you study hard, use the materials she provides, and go to lecture you will do fine.
Good overall, fair grader, cares about students. Tests are difficult but if you study the online notes, take notes in lecture (USE LECTURE GUIDES), and do hw they aren't too bad. Def use the practice test, and make notecards, etc. Save all tests. Pay attention and don't be afraid to ask questions. Will work hard but you CAN get a good grade!
For this class, you have to work. Whatever energy you put in, is what you get out grades wise. Not an easy A, but she truly is an amazing professor. You can tell she loves her job. My advice is to study hard.
Dr. Ferzli is a wonderful person, and she is very knowledgable about the subject she is teaching; however, it is nearly impossible to make A's on her exams. The lectures can be boring at times, but it is important to pay attention because she presents a lot of material at one time. Overall, a solid professor that wants to see you succeed.
She loves bio and enjoys teaching it, but I personally don't like this type of biology even though I am a bio major. It is very hard if you don't work in it and the test are pretty hard as well. I wouldn't recommend it unless you enjoy this type of biology cause it's kinda hurting me for med school. Her lecture is also pretty monotone and boring.
Dr. Ferzli is amazing. Although some of the subject matter can be dull, she makes things a lot better by subtle humor. You can tell she is very passionate. She truly is one of the best professors I've had. Yes, the tests can be difficult but as long as you focus and study there's no reason you shouldn't make an A.
Dr. Ferzli is very nice and cares about her students, but I would not recommend taking her. She doesnt go into detail for really hard concepts, so you will have to use outside sources to fully learn the material. She also doesnt understand that students take other classes, so she expects a lot out of you. You will work a lot harder in her 183 class
Dr. Ferzli is an amazing teacher. She is extremely passionate about both her students and the material. You will master the info. I had her for 181 & 183. Loved 181. Some tests were difficult, but I always felt prepared. 183 is very difficult. You have to be very specific & detailed & sometimes she throws curveballs. Great teacher but hard tests.
She is probably your best bet for BIO 181/183 if you want to truly understand the material. Gives helpful tips to remember tough subjects, very detailed and has high expectations for her students. Tests are very difficult, and long, must study at least a week in advance. LOTS of work outside of lecture.
Dr. Ferzli is one of my favorite professors at State. She loves her job, is passionate about biology, and truly wants her students to succeed. She is also very kind and caring, and will listen to any problem you have with the course (or with anything). Her class is definitely not an easy A, but she will help you understand the material in-depth.
Dr. Ferzli is probably the best choice for BIO181 and BIO183. Not to say that her class is easy because it isn't. She gives lectures which are typically interesting enough because she is clearly very passionate about Biology. She is a very caring teacher and although very busy she responds to emails and emails the whole class several times a week.
I freaking love Dr. Ferzli!! She clearly has a passion for biology and explains everything very well. The tests are hard. You really need to study because her tests are 70% short answer or fill in the blank. That being said, it is definitely worthwhile if you love biology. She will also bump your grade if you do some extra credit.
I love Dr. Ferzli. She is amazing and was a great biology teacher. She really explains the material so well. She is so sweet and understanding. I made a mistake on bubbling in my test answers and she gave me back all my credit. Also when my grandma passed away she help me catch up on missed quizzes and assignments. She is a sweet heart!
She is so sweet and very willing to help. She constantly sends emails throughout the week as reminders when we have hw or quizzes. it is a hard class so with a lot of info on each test, so study far in advance. She gives u the essay questions, practice tests, and reviews the class before the test.
Dr. Ferzli is hands down the best professor I've ever had. Her class isn't easy; you have to work for your grade, but she gives you everything you need to succeed. She provides amazing study materials and learning objectives, so there are no surprises on the test. She will help lay an incredibly strong foundation in biology. Take her class!!
Dr. Ferzli is an amazing professor who will go out of her way to help you in any way shape or form. Her tests were fairly difficult and stressful, but she prepares you in everyday possible. I could not imagine biology with any other professor. Take her in Cox Hall for the Scale UP class if possible. It makes the class more interesting!
Dr. Ferzli is such a caring woman and is passionate about what she teaches. Lectures can be a little bit boring but she tries to spice them up with her humor. Grading on tests is a bit harsh but nothing out of the ordinary. She gives practice tests and the essays that will be on the tests ahead of time. Definitely take Ferzli for BIO181!
Tests are very hard, probably the worst part about the whole class. She is a great professor and has amazing stories about traveling, but her tests are just extremely hard. And also the tests are online, so you must go to the DELTA Testing Center to take them.
Lecture was boring but you can tell she loves her job and she tries to make it interesting by telling jokes. Lots of work outside of class but its not too hard. Tests are very tough but you have a lot of opportunities to bring your grade back up. She gave a lot of easy extra credit. The textbook is not needed since she posts lots of resources.
It's a lot to learn and you really need to study. She's nice, focuses the tests off the powerpoints and gives you guided notes.
Dr. Ferzli is very passionate about what she teaches, which is a good thing. She makes class somewhat enjoyable through her love for biology. Sometimes I found that the tests she gave were a lot harder than the study guides and review questions, which was frustrating. Make sure to take notes during lecture and listen carefully to what she says.
I never thought I could enjoy bio until taking Dr. Ferzli. Her lectures are amazing, and she's patient at explaining and reviewing concepts before the exams. Test questions are straight from lecture notes and can be a tad tricky, but aren't difficult if you take good notes and pay attention in class.
Material heavy, rambles during lectures and sometimes goes off topic because she loves whats she's talking about so much. Take this class in the classroom and not the lecture hall if you can because lecture hall is easy to not pay attention since its boring. Tells a lot of dad jokes. She's nice but wouldn't grade bump me when I was one point away.
I genuinely love her but the material is very dense. If you try your best you will pass and she gives a few opportunities for (small) extra credit. However, she's really passionate about what she teaches and wants you to do your best.
Dr Ferzli is super nice. However, her lectures are extremely boring and she goes off into tangents sometimes because she is so passionate about her work. Her tests are VERY difficult. There are a FEW opportunities for extra credit. I was less than half a point away from a B- and wouldn't bump me up. /: You get what you get.
Ferzli is actually a godsend. Tests are a bit tough but if you study enough in advance its fine. She's the sweetest person and you can tell she genuinely wants her students to succeed. also she will help you if theres a concept you dont get!!!
Dr. Ferzli is one of the best instructors I've ever had. She is super nice and understanding; she genuinely wants her students to succeed. Her class is pretty hard (particularly her exams) but if you go to class and put in effort to learn the material you should have no issues in Dr. Ferzli's class.
You will be better of taking other professors since she gives more work and has more dense information on her tests that isn't necessary for the course requirements. She loves what she does so she tends to ramble and lectures tend to be boring and easy to get lost and fall behind. Study 2 weeks a ahead of tests and rewrite notes after lectures
I think where people struggle with 183 is that they try to memorize their way thru the course. Although memorization is a big part, Ferzli focuses and tests more on application-based problems. So if you take the time to sit down and understand the material, the class isn't too difficult. Exams are only based off lectures & Dr. Ferzli is really nice
Nice lady but she is a horrible professor and her exams are very hard!
Dr. Ferzli is a very nice lady but her class is unnecessary hard. She gives you a study guide before each exam but it really doesn't help at all on the exams. The lab for this class suckssssss! Do yourself a favor and take someone else for bio 181.
Dr. Ferzli was extremely passionate about the subject and helping her students. She wants her students to do well, but you have to put in a lot of work to do well. If you go to class, pay attention, and study a lot in advance you will do fine.
I thought Ferzli was bad until I took Parks--then I realized how good Ferzli was. Her tests are HARD; lots of memorization for lots of information. However, if you go to class and study your notes cover to cover, you'll be fine. There was never anything on the tests that wasn't in the notes. Teaches material well. VERY hard teacher, but fair.
Solid Professor, teaches well.
Ferzli's class can be easy to pass if you study a lot and take time to do the practice tests and read over the notes several times. Even though she can be dull in the lectures it's extremely important to listen to what she says as a lot of the information is not on the slides.
Her tests can be tricky sometimes with how she phrases/formats questions, but the study guide is almost exactly like the test most of the time and you can tell she's really interested in what she's talking about.
Dr. Ferzli is probably the best BIO181 teacher. I got As and Bs on all my assignments. I did fine without the textbook. However, I made sure to attend every lecture and complete every assignment.
Best professor I had in my first semester of college. She gives excellent lectures and notes. The material can be difficult, but she'll get you through it. She's very passionate about biology. Really enjoyed the class.
She is extremely nice and wants to help you learn, but exams have a ton of material.
She is a great teacher! She's definitely not an easy A, but the amount of work you put in, will earn you the grade you receive. I've taken Ferzli for Bio 181 and 183 so I can't compare her to the other bio professors, but I can say with Ferzli , you will learn a lot! If you're a Pre-Med, Pre-vet, or any kind of pre-health major, definitely take her
She was a nice lady and taught the material. However, I felt the pace for the class was very slow. Overall, I struggled showing up to this class. Some days it didn't feel useful because the material would be posted later and the lecture would be dry and not engaging at all. Participation is part of your grade, so I did show up and work.
Dr. Ferzli makes her lectures enjoyable. She will bring in her personal experience while teaching which is refreshing! She makes sure all students have access to her slides, makes lecture guides, gives you a list of what to know for exams, and gives you access to practice exams. The material can be hard but if you study, you should be fine!
Dr. Ferzli's teaching style is very monotone and her ability to convey the information is not clear when she begins to draw things out. In Bio 181 she placed such a very strong emphasis on plants failed to teach the different life cycles and left it to the TA's which varied in success. Overall a poor tracher.
Dr. Ferzli loves to play with models and acts as if her class is the most important. She assigns an excessive amount of assignments and there are better professors to take Bio 183 with.
Dr. Ferzli really cars about her students but her tests are so hard. You can tell this course is a weeder class, and the tests are purposely hard. I did everything she recommended to study, and still got high C's on the exams. If you do well in lab and go to class and do the HW, a B is definitely doable.
She assigned a huge amount of in class assignments, take home assignments, online quizzes, and so much more. I would say her practice tests are easier than the real test, but she tended to pull at least 3 questions from the practice test. Her tests were so hard, EXTREMELY detailed, PAY ATTENTION TO WHAT SHE SAYS not what's on the ppt.
Dr. Ferzli is honestly one of the best profs I have had at NC State. Her tests are difficult but if you study for them they are not bad. Also she assigns a fair amount of hw but it helps for understanding course material. Would absolutely take it again. If only she taught higher level bio classes.
Dr. Ferzli is obviously passionate about biology. But 183 was horrendous, you must take notes on what she says not what she writes down to pass. The tests are very difficult and she often assigns homework at the last minute and these homework assignments take forever. However, she is very helpful and always available for questions!
I had Ferzli for both 181 and 183. She was really good in 181, but tbh in 183 she was really bad with explaining concepts. I basically taught myself the entire course which really sucks. She's a nice person (sometimes) but it is a class you have to work for. Did not really enjoy 183, even tho the content is more interesting.
She goes through a lot of information very quickly so I'd recommend printing out the lecture guides before class. Test questions can be pretty subjective so you almost have to memorize the content exactly how it's presented. Decent amount of HW that doesn't end up being graded until the end of the semester. Class can be tough, but it's manageable.
Dr. Ferzli goes too fast through the material and spent too much time on plants.
Dr. Ferzli is a great professor, and she is really receptive to her students. This course has a lot of material. Tests are not that bad as long as you study and memorize everything on the notes she provides. I never used the textbook. Dr. Ferzli is extremely passionate about the course material and gives extra credit at the end of the semester.
Dr. Ferzli is a good professor and very nice. She was very receptive to students and always answered questions that any student had. She does go through information pretty fast though and taking notes can be a little tough at times. However, if she says that a test will have something on it or will use prior test questions, trust me it will.
This class was one of the worst classes I have ever had. She expects you to learn everything but frequently presented new material a few days before the exam.
She went so fast I was lost the entire time and fell behind. She skipped parts of material and assumed we already knew it and gave confusing homework that was loosely related to the notes.
Dr. Ferzli is friendly but a bit arrogant. Having a study group helped me pass this intro class. She made it more difficult than it needed to be.
She may be a nice person but that doesn't mean she can teach. Dr. Ferzli is very disorganized and speeds through material. Pay attention to what she says because she only says it once.
Very disrespectful professor who only cares for herself. She runs through material and is not clear in her directions on assignments. From what my friends say Flores is better.
Worst class I've ever taken. You will only do good if you're a bio fanatic or you're great at studying. Tests are horrible, you will need to know EVERYTHING. Moves through material too fast and has homework on topics before they are taught. Don't buy the textbook. Great person, but I wouldn't recommend taking her class. Also, the lab SUCKS.
Dr. Ferzli is very passionate about biology and so if you are a Bio major/took AP Bio but didn't get credit/otherwise really love Bio I would recommend her. She goes very in depth and you are required to know a lot of information for each test. She loves to ask very specific questions on tests. The course is manageable but not easy.
Tests are way harder than anything ever presented in class. She does not write down her notes a lot of the time so it is hard to follow. Plan on studying around 30 hours a test if you want an A.
Dr. Ferzli is a mess. Her teaching style is all over the place and never gives a consistent amount of information. She did very little in teaching the material and crammed it all into one or two lectures for each unit.
Awful awful teacher. Notes were all over the place and failed to give reliable biology content. Would not recommened even if you took AP Bio. 0/10
DO NOT TAKE IT WITH HER!!!! SHE IS ONE OF THE ABSOLUTE WORSE PROFESSORS I HAVE EVER HAD AT NC STATE.
Dr. Ferzli is one my absolute favorite professors! She expects you to come to class, learn, and put in effort. The material is not easy and she is great in office hours but this is college and you have to study hard and work for a good grade in her class. Her tests are very specific so you have to know the material. Go to the review sessions!
Her teaching style is too fast and she isn't clear about what is on the test. Had to basically teach myself the course with the textbook.
She is very confusing with her lectures and never really sticks to a single format. She goes too fast and isn't clear of what's going to be on the test.
She is an absolutely amazing teacher! I have had so many bad teachers, that this class gave me the hope to keep going. She organized but will make you work for your grade. It's a hard class but super fun. Tests: Do her study guides, practice tests, and quizlets. If you know that you will be golden! might give extra credit. TAKE HER!!!!
She is professional and she knows her Biology. You can tell that she is very passionate about bio. I found her lectures more on the boring side, especially if you do not enjoy biology. It seemed like she just went into the hard stuff about topics without explaining the basics. I found this class to be difficult. She was understanding and helpful.
I had Ferzli during the Covid-19 situation. The class itself is pretty difficult in terms of content, and there was little to no modification made when we were moved online. Alot of assignments which count for completion and not grades. She is very nice, and is willing to help you out but the class is way harder than it needs to be.
Easy class & amazing professor
Dr. Ferzli is a great professor! She is really kind and caring, but she will make you work for your grade.
I had Dr. Ferzli two semesters in a row for BIO181 and 183. She is very sweet and passionate about biology and you should take her class if you're the same way. The content can be difficult, but she gives you all that you need to succeed. She offers tons of study materials like practice tests, study guides, etc. which makes her tests a lot easier.
Ferzli is a really good professor because it's clear she is experienced and knows what she is talking about. She gives really good lectures so just pay attention and take thorough notes. She provides lots of helpful resources to prepare for exams, but her exams are really difficult. You have to really master all topics to pass the exams.
She is super passionate about what she does and cares about you. Her tests are open book, open note, open internet, but they're done in a way that you do need to study. The tests make you learn the concepts in a good way instead of just memorizing the vocab.
Dr. Ferzli was such an amazing instructor and you can tell she really cares about her students. The lectures are pretty content heavy and if you don't pay attention or don't go to them, you won't do very well. There's quite a few quizzes and smaller homework assignments, so the exams aren't the only grades. Theres a lot of opportunities to succeed.
Dr. Ferzli online was terrible. She takes notes on an online document and writes in the margins, so you can barely tell what she's writing. She gives out homework with no warning so you have to sift through moodle to find it. She's nice and can be helpful, but tests are hard and lots of studying needs to be done to get even a mediocre grade.
Honestly, she is one of the worst professors I've ever had. She acts like she is an expert in biology and education but really isn't in either. She has a masters in biology and a phd in science education... Thinks she is the best educator at state (literally said that) but gives the students SO much work and calls it active learning. She sucks!!
The lectures where Dr. Ferzli wrote on a document were hard to follow and the tests were unfair (w/ "select all that apply" and short answer questions that the TAs graded, NOT her). The worst part of this class was the TAs, who offered 0 help in review sessions. Take this professor if you're good at learning on your own, otherwise good luck.
DON'T TAKE 267 with her!!! Gives such bad feedback, super unclear. Thinks we're lucky to be in her presence. Makes me feel like I can't do anything right. Obviously hates the other professors in class and cuts them off or argues with them in front of the class. Expects us to write papers and proposals perfectly as freshmen with no guidance.
She seems nice but don't let it fool you, her tests are so stupidly difficult that it is mind-blowing. No matter what you put for the answer (most of which are short answers or multiple selections) it won't be "fully correct" and you'll lose points. The class is way too stressful and even after studying more than I ever have I still got ok grades.
If you want to take an easy bio class where you barely have to try DO NOT TAKE FERZLI. Despite the fact that shes a really good professor and seems to care for students her exams are really hard and take off points for the littlest things. Homework and class work problems are pretty easy, but the test is what makes her hard.
Dr. Ferzli is a very nice lady, but her class is so hard to succeed in solely because of the tests. I studied extremely hard and used all the resources given by her and the TAs and then the test covered completely random things that were never given any emphasis. It is not reflective of what I had learned and EXTREMELY frustrating. Save your time.
Exams are unbelievably specific and difficult even if you study hard and use all of the resources given to you. Do not recommend.
Had Ferzli for 181 and 183 freshman year and cannot say enough good things. She is very knowledgeable and passionate about bio and loves what she does. Lectures are interesting, tests are difficult but she gives so many resources to prepare so you'll do well if you try. Also gives extra credit opportunities! I'm going to miss her class!!
She's an amazing professor. Genuinely cares about her students and wants them to succeed. The little homework that she gives out is actually helpful, not busy work. Very accessible outside of class. Lecture notes are a bit messy, but she's happy to clarify/rewrite for you. Lots of review material and resources on Moodle page to prepare for exams!
If you want to do well, live by her lectures. She provides many other resources too that can be helpful. Her exams are very specific in what she wants so answer the questions with everything you possibly know to get as much credit as possible. I got a 76, 95, and 95 on the exams and a 90 on the final to get a 96. Dont slack in lab, it helps a lot.
I had Dr. Ferzli for BIO 181 & 183. She's very passive-aggressive in emails & there is a lot of miscommunication. Grading is very delayed. Exams are impossible even if you know the info. Don't ever bother emailing to fix your grade, even if you are right, because your issue won't be resolved. I strongly don't recommend her.
She's a great teacher, but man those tests are hard. I'm sure it'll be better in person, but when the tests are open-book open-notes open-internet, it makes it so much harder.
She seems like a nice person, but I didn't like her as a professor. Her lectures were disorganized and so was the Moodle page. Tons of random participation assignments that were not clearly marked and never graded. Her tests are ridiculously hard and poorly written or have ambiguous questions. Topics too in detail expected for a survey class IMO
I enjoyed ferzlis class, but it can be very difficult at times and she can be hard to follow. But overall a great professor that knows a lot about biology
LOVE HER! One of my favorite teachers at NCSU! She will make you work for the grade but you learn so much from her about Bio and she is very caring and wants you to have a great time and succeed. She will work with you if you have issues w/ the topic and she loves when kids ask her questions and engage in the class. Zoom option which is thoughtful!
Dr. Ferzli truly cares about her students and her work. The passion she puts into the lectures is truly inspirational, but her tests are rather difficult. Paying attention during class and using the resources she provides will help you be successful in her class.
AMAZING professor!! She explains everything thoroughly and even though she gives lots of coursework, she makes sure that everyone understands the material.
I really enjoyed her class. I feel that the tests were difficult but not impossible and it helped that they were online. I understood her lectures well and there isnt a lot of homework besides the lab and those werent that difficult either. She really cares about her students and you can tell she loves what she does. If you study, youll be great
she is an amazing professor and definitely cares about her students. her lectures are interesting and easy to follow but you need to attend them (in-person/zoom) to do well. use any resources she provides and make sure to understand concepts. her exams are open book/notes. she is great at explaining and definitely knows what she is talking about.
Dr. Ferzli is one of those professors who you know wants the best for you and is going to help you as much as she can. Although the tests are pretty hard, if you just pay attention in class and study a little you should be fine. She also does things in class where you get to participate in answering questions and working with people around you.
Took her twice for BIO 181 and 183. In both labs I had A+, but in her class I was consistently making a B- or C+. Tests are unreasonably hard, even though they are online and open note. There are lots of application questions. She gets off topic like crazy and explains concepts at a higher level than this course is supposed to.
tests are such a big part of your grade and they are way harder than they need to be. lectures don't match up with what you're tested on. it's like you're tested on a much higher level of biology than the one she teaches. so much application.
She is super sweet. If you go to lecture, and actually study even though you get to use your notes on the exam then youll do good. Pay attention to tophat questions and the stuff that she emphasizes or spends too much time talking about, because you will be asked in detail to talk about that specific thing on the test.
I like Dr. Ferzli. I. have had her before and loved her. However, this class was bad. I did well in BIO 181 with her but I STRUGGLED with this class. I am a high B and A student and for most of the semester I was struggling to even pass. The tests were too long for the time available and the short answer questions were difficult. Do not recommend.
Dr. Ferzli is one of the worst professors I've had. Tests are extremely hard no matter how much you study. They have content on there that wasn't taught in class. She often goes on tangents about topics, not in this course. Assigns about a billion assignments a week that are barely graded. Would not recommend her at all.
I took 181 with Dr Ferzli and decided to take 183 because she was nice. However, I forgot how difficult her tests are. They are open note but impossible to finish in the time limit. You will run out of time on every test and the labs are long and don't help with the material. I'll likely have to retake this class now, wish I didn't take it with her
Ferzli makes BIO183 way harder than it needs to be. Tests make up almost the entire grade, and half of the assignments we did weren't even graded. If you have to take this class, do not take her. Tests are extremely hard to do well on, and other sections of this class only have multiple choice on their exams. Essays count for a large chunk of grade
Dr. Ferzli is the most unorganized professor. She goes off on tangents during lectures and does not cover the material that we are tested on. This is a textbook optional course, but yet her exams are much more detailed than the notes. She will take off a lot of points on free response questions for not wording things a certain way. AVOID
I would not recommend Dr. Ferzli for 183. I took her for 181 and enjoyed it, but 183 had very few grades, many homework assignments she did not grade and often hid different places in Moodle, and almost impossible exams which took the entire amount of time given to complete. It was also very hard to learn the content in the lecture and on zoom.
VERY lecture heavy!!! The way she explains concepts are very confusing and she goes off on random tangents which makes it hard to follow. The tests and quizzes are also phrased weirdly so it can be hard to understand the questions. If you attend class in person you will do better, but you will still have to reteach yourself everything.
I honestly did not enjoy taking BIO 183 at all. I think that this class was challenging since all of the exams were difficult. I do not recommend taking BIO 183 with Dr. Ferzli.
Hated this class, she wasn't helpful. TA's grade so harshly.
I do not recommend taking BIO 183 with Dr. Ferzli.
Ferzli is an amazing person but the class is unreasonably hard. Graded by only a handful of assignments which are not easy at all. Exams are ridiculously hard and difficult to complete on time. I enjoy bio and do well but the structure of this class made it so hard to be successful. No reason an intro level Bio class had to be this difficult.
Incredibly confusing lectures with many tangents and unstructured notes. I hardly feel like I learned anything this semester and I came out liking biology less than I did before. Her tests were open note but highly specific and confusing. However, she is super kind and passionate about biology, it just didn't work for me.
if you're taking this research class get ready to not know your grade till the very last minute and have very little leniency for it
Ferzli is very nice, knowledgable but lectures boring. Tests are killer. Multiple choice, free response, fill-in-the-blank, drag and drop. Even online, the tests suck and hard to get good grades on. She provides many study resources but compared to my friends with other professors, we were overworked and graded more harshly. Take with another prof.
Dr. Ferzli was an overly passionate professor about biology. The class is very assignment-heavy and assignments are given randomly at the end of class or through email. You never know if these assignments are graded or participation. Tests are open-note and timed, but very specific. Rely on lab to boost your grade its worth 1/3 of the final grade.
Genuinely one of my favorite professors. Took her for BIO 181 and 183 my freshman year. Tests are open note, but she warns you that you have to study (and you do). Pay attention during lectures and you're golden. You can tell she knows her stuff, and she's been so so accommodating when I missed exams due to illness. One of the best profs on campus.
Dr. Ferzli is an amazing professor, she truly wants you to do well and she cares for her students. Test are harder but if you study and prepare well in advance you will do fine. Attendance is taken on lecture days. Lectures are taught very well and are interactive, but there is lots of information so pay attention!
Dr. Ferzli is a kind person, and this shows in how she teaches her classes. The lectures feel a bit long but were informative, and she provided lots of study resources. The tests can be difficult but if you study using her materials you do well. She does send assignments out via email, which is hard to keep track of. She is overall a good teacher.
She is a very good and nice teacher. Her classes are mostly lecture based. For the exams, just mostly study the vocabs and you should be good.
Dr. Ferzli is really good for 181! Make sure you're paying attention to the examples she gives in class because those often appear on the exams. She is very passionate about what she is teaching though and you can tell she enjoys it and being able to interact with her students.
Professor Ferzli really is a great teacher to have for 181. Tests can be pretty hard, taken at the Delta testing center, but you will do good if you have a good study drive. She is very caring about mental health and considerate to her students. Would highly recommend.
Grade was a good mix of assignments and tests. The tests are difficult but she gives you everything you need to study and do well on the exams, you just have to utilize them. I didn't have many interactions with her but she seemed very understanding and caring
Dr Ferzli is a great professor who cares a lot for her students. Its clear she likes both the subject and actually teaching. Exams can be tough (multiple choice, fill in the blank, essay questions, etc) but as long as you review notes and do the practice tests you'll do just fine
I truly loved being in her class. Her exams are very hard. I studied extensively and still did not do well. The lab grade saved my life. She also does homework like assignments that help your grade and understanding of the topics you are learning. She is very flexible when it comes to communication and family issues.
The lectures can be boring, but that's coming from someone who doesn't love biology. Overall, she is a great professor and truly loves what she's doing and cares about her students. There is not much homework in the lecture section, a lot for the lab.
Dr. Ferzli is a great professor and did a great job at communicating relatively complex ideas. As long as you study well for each test, you'll do fine.
This class definitely takes a lot of work and studying, but it is an interesting course and Dr. Ferzli is a great professor. You will need to take significant time outside the class to understand the topics.
Professor Ferzli is kind and cares about her students. She's very approachable and I enjoyed her lectures. Her exams are very hard though and I had to go to Cox Hall for all of them. The homework assignments aren't graded very harshly, and that's what saved my grade. That and the lab. So participate, and be prepared to study like crazy.
Dr. ferzli is super sweet. though she says attendance are mandatory, she is so flexible and chill. her lectures are amazing if you are interested in ecology. you can tell she is excited to teach so it is amazing to see someone so passionate. do the practice exams (don't have to turn them in, just for study). she also creates quizlets to help you
I liked Dr. Ferzli and the topics discussed in this course, however, her tests were unnecessarily hard and the lab portion of the class required A LOT of work.
She is very nice and caring for her students but honestly this class is way to hard for absolutely no reason. Her exams force you to memorize every single detail she ever says in her lectures. I was a biology major before taking her. But after this class, I have changed my major. If you want to maintain your sanity. do not take her.
get ready for the most boring lectures of your life. she means well but she is not good at keeping a class engaged and learning. her exams are also difficult even if you took apes or apbio bc they'll ask super specific questions and her short answers always look for some key word that if you miss, you'll get half credit for the question at most.
Dr. Ferzli is a caring professor who wants her students to do well. That being said, this class goes into such extreme detail that you must spend hours upon hours of studying to even get a decent grade on test. Her test are the hardest test I have ever taken and at DELTA. DO NOT TAKE UNLESS YOU HAVE PHOTOGRAPHIC MEMORY. Take ANY other professor
She often had a hard time staying on track in her lectures and misworded things often. She also teaches everything very rough and piece by piece, so you are always wondering what you even learned. There are 3 tests and a final and they are very short so getting a good grade is hard. Would NOT recommend unless you are a genius.
Dr. Ferzli is a very well educated professor, how ever she overloads you with information that you do not need to know. Her class is significantly harder than other professors' classes for BIO 183, and her lectures are very long winded and boring. Tests are crazy difficult, and not open note or open book like most other classes.
She is very passionate about Biology, but she rants in lecture and expects you to remember ever last word and every detail for the exam. The only people I knew who genuinely did well had a photographic memory or had already taken the class. All of the unclear and difficult questions on the exam are open-ended and worth 10 - 15 points.
Dr. Ferzli is very nice, but I would not take a class again. She doesn't explain well, and you would more likely struggle on every exam. She doesn't prepare you for the exam at all. There are a lot of topics that she didn't break down well and barely went over yet there on the exam. And there at Delta Testing, be prepared!!
Dr. Ferzli is a sweet lady but her exams are nearly impossible to do good on. Took her for 181 (got B) and her 183 section is harder than 181. Lectures feel really long but important to go to. Tests at delta, almost all of assignments submitted are not counted into your grade. Only take if your dedicated to learning material, or very good studier.
Dr. Ferzli is such a sweet lady, and she is one that genuinely cares for her students. She is very enthusiastic about the material she teaches, but her tests are insane. Her tests are graded very harshly and even with immense studying, I found it very difficult to even pass her exams. Do not take unless you plan to study every single day!!
If you have another option, do not take this class. The tests are nearly impossible to pass. Her lectures are so confusing and she discusses topics that we do not need to know. She is a very kind lady, but she is very confusing and not very helpful.
I took this class for a pre-med requirement and absolutely would not take it again. I studied two weeks in advanced before tests, hours each day, and still did average on the tests. There are other professors that teach this course way easier than her. The written responses on tests are nearly impossible to get correct. She's kind, but too hard.
Her lectures never really helped me absorb the material. Homework & assignments were the only thing that really helped me apply the information she was throwing at us, but sometimes didn't even match what we were learning atm. Exams killed my grade because she made them so hard & wouldn't make any curve even though the class average was always low.
would not recommend there are other professors who teach the course a lot easier. the lectures are confusing and the tests are more confusing. tests are 'select one or more answer' and short answer questions so if you don't know you won't pass. also short answer requires every small detail or it's wrong. studied very hard still didn't do well
Ferzli is incredibly nice, but the way she explains the material is very scattered, and makes it incredibly hard to enjoy learning the topic. At times I couldn't tell if I was just no longer interested in bio, or if her teaching was so bad to the point that it made me hate it. Her extra credit on the first test was nice though. :)
Ferzli is a very nice person in general. However, being a nice person doesn't mean that you're good at designing tests and making the lectures engaging. I had to sit through the most agonizing lectures that did absolutely nothing to prepare me for the monstrosities that are Miriam Ferzli's tests. DON'T TAKE UNLESS YOU WANT TO GO ABSOLUTELY INSANE.
Great person. Now that that's been said, TRY YOUR ABSOLUTE BEST NOT TO TAKE HER. Her lectures are chaotic and you will always leave questioning your life choices. Exams are at DELTA testing and are totally draining. Prepare to spend 10 hours studying for a spicy 70%. Lab will save your grade, but you might come out hating bio at the end of it all.
If you are premed or lifescience, taking Ferzli will help a lot later on with the extra detail she covers. The tests were detailed, but most points I lost were from TA's making grading mistakes and Ferzli would give back points if you asked. She also gave a ton of EC at the end (~6% of overall grade). Is the class a lot of work? Yes. Doable? Yes.
Ferzli was a very caring and passionate professor, but lectures were heavy on memorization. Tests were very difficult. There were 2-3 assignments per week that took a bit of time, but many were never graded. I would avoid her unless you're good at biology/willing to put in significantly higher effort than other bio183 classes.
Ferzli is definitely one of the most passionate professors. However, taking her twice did not do me much good. Tests were VERY difficult which made any amount of preparation impossible to receive a passing grade. Super caring, but doesn't understand that bad test scores mean lack of effort but rather a problem in the way the tests are designed.
this class? impossible compared to the other profs w online tests/open note-ours were delta, no notes, incredibly dense, 3x more detail. irrational grading w frqs-if u miss 1 thing shes looking for, credit off.15 hrs of studying per test for an A. expect to know EVERY detail in lecture even if not on the slides or 4pg study guide! orgo was easier.
It's a big class so not much to expect, but it's just hard to follow the lectures. Felt like I had to teach myself everything to understand it. She is very sweet and makes class interesting, but it's just hard to substantially learn.
Professor Ferzli is a very sweet and caring woman, but her lectures make me want to bang my head into the wall. She rambles on and on, and does not ever stay on topic. We probably heard about her trip to the Galapagos islands 50 times in the first two weeks of class. Her tests are very detail specific, so the TA review sessions saved my grade.
She's super sweet but my god I went insane (cried) studying for her tests. Unless you're a genius, do not take her class. The only thing I liked about it was the "Scale-Up" method as we would do assignments together with our table groups, getting direct help from the TA's if needed. But she is so harsh on those tests for no reason, so much content!
Dr Ferzli is a great person and very passionate about biology. She is very helpful and will answer any questions you have. That being said, her tests are INSANELY DIFFICULT. They are designed to trip you up and if you don't write exactly what she is looking for your score gets docked. Great teacher, but be prepared to go mentally insane.
She is really smart and has a lot of experience but she can be kind of annoying and go off topic. Her tests can be really hard, our class average was in the 60s on one exam. Luckily your lab grade can save your grade for the most part.
Dr. Ferzli is such a nice person and clearly loves biology. Class is very lecture heavy, though, and can be hard to follow sometimes. The tests are hard and the questions on it are confusing. I feel like I know bio pretty well but the questions on the test said otherwise. Take this class if you are committed to studying and learning on your own.
Dr. Ferzli is a very good person, she cares a lot for her students and has a lot of resources. However, her lectures are hard to follow and tests are very difficult. Yes, it's meant to test your knowledge but I felt like she taught a percentage of what she actually tested on. My test scores were bad, but the assignments and lab grade saved my grade
Her tests are detail-oriented but she supplies SO many study materials including Quizlets, videos, practice exams, and study sessions. The labs are fairly interesting but there's a lot of post-lab work. If you're a STEM major, take her. She is passionate about her work and you'll actually learn the material. I'm taking her for BIO183 next semester!
I love Dr. Ferzli as a person however I feel her exams were incredibly too hard. Too much to memorize and goes too into detail. My average for the exam was 60-70% and I would study for an entire week before. She is a great person and incredibly passionate about what she teaches, though I will not be taking her again for 183.
Textbook and attendance required in lab Uses DELTA testing, so if you get stressed easily, reconsider. Every detail covered in ppts is tested on, and she only covers each detail once. No helpful review material besides ppts, and really long practice tests. Class participation and attendance: 16.7% Lab: 33.3% Unit exams: 11.1% each Final: 16.7%
Dr. Ferzli is passionate about biology and she can go on tangents sometimes. The test are at Delta and can be difficult if you don't know the format, do the practice tests. Questions can come from assignments that have content not in the lecture notes. The lectures are recorded but she takes attendance. She is responsive to the needs of students.
do not take
she is a super sweet and caring person but her class is very challenging. her exams are extremely challenging and she expects you to know every bit of material that was covered. she does give practice exams but they are so much easier than the actual exams. she is super sweet but I wouldn't take her again.
The class was okay. Tests were hard to do good on.
The information was easy to understand. Would recommend this course with Ferzli if you want to learn the information. The tests were hard but Ferzli gives Quizlets, practice tests, and study guides that you fill out during class.
I loved Dr. Ferzli for 181. I have always struggled with biology and this was the first instructor to make it make sense (and fun!) for me. I love the class setup. But it is true that her exams are tough. She claimed the first exam was the toughest, but my grades have only gone down since the first one, and I have studied 15-20 hours for each.
class was so hard and exams were super difficult
Very nice but not a good teacher. There was not good organization or structure to the course. TAs were in the class but not very helpful or involved. Homework assignments were confusing and not straight forward while also not gone over in classes before. All assignments are graded by TAs that don't grade with a timely and accurate manner.
I love Dr. Ferzli and the PackTrack program. If you work hard, you will do great. She is so kind and understanding with all her students. The hardest part of the class is the individual lit review paper, but you finish it before spring break.
183 is more technical than 181 and I found it better to just go to class than rewatch lectures. Dr. Ferzli requires you to remember specific information for the test that can only be learned through memorization. There were some homework assignments which covered things we didn't talk about in class but were on the exam.
Very sweet but tests are pretty tough. Tests are multiple choice, short-answer, and fill in the blank. I did ask her about several questions the TA's graded and got points back on EVERY TEST. So that was annoying, the TA's did not know what they were doing and were grading too harshly. Lectures can be a lot, will need an ipad or printer to do well.
coming back to rate her after 2 years. very difficult compared to other bio teachers, but as a premed, it has helped me SO much more. if you're pre-anything medical i would recommend this class. if you're taking this to fulfill a credit - AVOID! take the other teachers with open note moodle tests lol (ferzlis are with delta and VERY difficult)
Ferzli's class is challenging but rewarding. The exams are tough, so studying 15-20 hours per test is a must. Unstuckstudy AI and practice tests helped me prepare.
Dr. Ferzli's class was one of the hardest I've taken at state so far, but very rewarding. This class really taught me how to study: expect to put in a lot of hours. Some of the exams were worded weirdly. As a person she is very kind/helpful during office hours. After I talked to her I started doing better in the class. Overall glad it's over.
She's a super sweet, caring human being, but the test are never actually on the lectures and instead mainly focus on one small detail that usually isn't gone over in the depth that it appears on the test. She tends to get off topic a lot, and you can't tell what notes you should or shouldn't be writing.
She's a sweet, caring person who is obviously incredibly interested in her field and knows a lot. The issue is that her tests never match her lectures or her study guides, and she assigns a large amount of homework, projects, labs, and exams that tend to all be due the same week.
This woman's tests are actually impossible and so far there have been no curves. I have studied for 5+ hours for each of her exams and cannot get above an 80. Her practice tests are NOTHING like the real tests so it is nearly impossible to prepare for them. Attendance is mandatory. I could go on and on but I am limited to 350 characters.
Professor Ferzli is very kind and passionate about her lectures, however, her exams are unreasonably difficult. Most of the time what you would use to study for her exam is not helpful whatsoever. There is no curve or make-ups for the exams and they are taken at a testing center. The most helpful thing is the TA's review sessions and office hours.
I loved Dr. Ferzli for Bio181. This class is hard, but if you want to do well you will. She is so caring with her students and clearly passionate about what she teaches. So many resources outside of class to help students with content and offered multiple extra credit assignments. Tests are hard, but definitely doable if you work hard.
Her tests are impossible. They are worded so weird and the study guide is not like them. So many multiple select on the tests and negative points if you click the wrong answers. If you take this class beware of the third test and study like no other. The lab and other class work make up some for the tests, but overall a very hard course for a GED
You would think the exams are written for a 400 level class. Not an introductory bio class. Insanely difficult. I would definitely take someone else.
The exams are impossible. You can only do good in this class if you come into this class with knowledge about the subjects. I started studying for her exams six days in advance and I have not gotten above a 60. The study guides and practice exams are unhelpful. The TA's review sessions are helpful but they are not given early enough in advance.
Dr. Ferzli is very nice and is very passionate about what she's teaching. Her tests are hard, especially the third one, but if you are willing to put in the work don't be afraid to take her class. The TA's offer SO MUCH extra help, and the study guides are great for studying for the tests. There is extra credit when the class does bad on an exam.
She's very passionate about the subject but towards the end of the semester I was lost. Tests were tough but she provides a lot of resources. TAs were constantly changing office hours and didn't help in class. I liked that she didn't read directly off of her slides. Lectures are recorded. Use the topic outlines or notes will be impossible.
Definitely the most caring professor I have had. She responds fast and typically is very understanding. The TAs were my favorite part of the class. But the class isn't easy, especially exams. I only passed one exam, but it's difficult not to make a -C or better. There is a lot of work, but it's easy. But the practice exams help a lot!
Professor Ferzli has very difficult tests that are taken in the testing centers which is annoying but she genuinely enjoys teaching and everything on the exams is provided in class at some point. If you study hard you'll be fine. Harder than other professors but her teaching style helps make the information stick. Very kind, funny, and caring.
You would have thought this was a 400 level class. The tests are insane and worded weirdly and all taken at Delta. Ferzli is passionate about the subject, if you're pre med this would be great for you but if your just taking as a GEP, avoid this.
Very difficult class, your lab instructor will make or break test 3, all tests are extremely difficult & worded strangely & taken at Delta. This definitely felt like a higher level course, Ferzli is very passionate, perfect for pre med students, but just taking as a GEP, AVOID!!!
I was scared going in as I'm not a stem major. However, Dr Ferzli is an amazing professor. You can tell she really cares and she explains things well. Great TA team. The tests aren't easy, but if you use your resources and study hard you will do just fine. Lab has a group project but other than that it's fine.
Best professor you could possibly get as a STEM major. Tests are hard, but have been very beneficial to me so far and I actually remember the information at the end of the semester. If you're not a STEM major, i would recommend going with a professor that has open-note and online exams.
Dr. Ferzli is overall a great professor but I would only suggest you to pick her as a professor if you are a STEM major and are some how going to use the information she teaches in the future. Her exams are really tough and it usually took me 5 whole days to prepare but she also give extra credit and other assignment to help your grade.
Dr. Ferzli is super caring and is passionate about biology. Class was the hardest I've ever taken. Failed every test and studied for hours. If you love biology and are a STEM major, take her you'll love it. Personally couldn't catch on. Lectures were somewhat boring, but Dr. Ferzli as a PERSON was one of my favorite professors this semester.
The lab grade is worth a lot more than the final exam grade. There are four tests, and every test has TA review sessions. The scale-up section is a lot easier than the lecture section. She uses some questions on practice exams for new exams and every question is usually based on the slides. If you put in the time, then the class is easy.
Dr. Ferzli was great. She cares a lot about the subjects she's covering and does a good job at explaining them. The tests are difficult, but as long as you study a decent amount you'll be fine. Make sure to turn in all of your lab work as it counts for about 30% of your grade.
Dr. Ferzli is passionate about her job, but this is a hard class. You go over so much material and have to know basically all of it for every exam. You have to study extremely hard for the exams to do decent and they are taken at delta which sucked. I would take her again, but I am a STEM major and enjoyed most of the material she taught.
She is very sweet and clearly passionate about what she does. She is very good about working with students if they need anything. However, the tests are very hard. They have matching, select multiple, and fill in the blank. You have to take detailed notes and study literally everything mentioned.
.she was sweet but the content was a lot of memorization and her tests were difficult. STUDY STUDY STUDY
I had Ferzli in Fall 2023. Recently I had the misfortune of her coming into my workplace, where she was extremely rude to me and her waitress. I was reminded by this interaction that she is the worst professor I've ever had, and I learned that she is not very kind to wait staff, so I wanted to share my experience inside and outside of university.
Ferzli is an amazing and caring professor, however prepare to spend lots of time studying. Tests are pretty difficult compared to the material taught, but attend the review sessions. If there is a good team of TA's then it will be an easy class.
She's fine, tests are kinda hard for the class, but if you study you'll be fine. I found her slightly annoying but I think everyone is.
Ferzli is a passionate teacher however she expects you to know the material intensively. Tests have all possible types of questions including free response, fill in the blank, matching, drag and drop, multiple choice etc. Be prepared to study extensively if you would like to receive a favorable grade. She is also a big fan of collaborative work.
TESTS AT DELTA. Dr. Ferzli is excellent, depending on the topic. She can go off-topic, but honestly, she's hilarious. Some topics she will just draw and expect you to learn. Prepare to learn on your own for that. Tests are VERY hard and unfair, in my opinion, but you WILL learn in this class. If you're pre-anything, I recommend her; if not, don't.
Amazing professor and very kind. Tests are just very hard but it is possible to do well on them as everything you need is provided. I loved having her.
Although the tests are pretty tough, Dr. Ferzli is very passionate about biology and wants her students to succeed. I struggled with the content and had to spend a lot of time outside of class learning the material, but that is not her fault. I wasn't the biggest fan of the group work, but none of the assignments are hard so it was managable.
Lectures can be a bit dry, especially in boring units. Lots of collaboration with group members, and there are several weekly in-class/outside of class activities. Tests are difficult and detail orriented so make sure you study A LOT and understand material conceptually. Not a bad professor and is superhelpful foundation for bio related majors
This is a hard class, but professor Ferzli is one of the best teachers I've ever had. Don't let other people's low ratings scare you from taking her class - she actually cares about her students learning unlike other biology teachers. EVERYTHING SHE TEACHES IS FAIR GAME ON EXAMS. "No way this will be on the exam, right?" IT WILL.
Dr. Ferzli is a wonderful teacher. If you truly wish to learn about biology, she will teach you. Her classes are difficult, and you will need to study. If you understand the material well, you will get a good grade. It is very important to show up to lectures. Often, specific details and information are covered in class that are seen on the tests.
Dr. Ferzli is a great teacher, however her lectures can be boring. I personally spent time re-watching lectures because I couldn't focus. Please listen to everything she says, even if something is mentioned very briefly, because it's fair game to be on the test. Things from homework will also be on the test. Just study and you'll pass easily.
Dr Ferzli is awesome, she truly cares about her students and is very understanding if you reach out and communicate. Her tests are hard but she is very accessible outside of the classroom and gives lots of opportunities to study and review.
This class was supposed to be an introductory/beginner class for research. However, Dr. Ferzli and her TAs graded each assignment very harshly. They did not consider the "beginner" aspect of the class, and expected every student to be a research expert. If you take this class, be prepared to have a lot of homework and receive harsh feedback.
BIO267 and Research PackTrack is a super beneficial course to take. I learned so much about reading/writing scientific lit. U also pretty much work the entire class in a group so beware of that. Dr Ferzli and TAs grade relatively nicely, however ur final grade basically comes on the last day of class. Also doesn't respond to emails fast.
Very caring, yet difficult professor. Both her and TA's are harsh graders, but still care for students. Content can be difficult. Attendance for both lab and class is required.
I think I love her
Not a beginner class what so ever. the work load is extreme and way too heavy. would recommend taking any other class if possible. ferzli is nice but work is terrible. tests are very hard.
Dr. Ferzli was an amazing professor, she was really interactive with her students and caring. The course itself is awful. If you're not a bio/science person do not take. There is so much homework that you will ace, but then the exams are incredibly hard. I failed every single one even after studying for weeks.
Terrible. Exams Suck and hardly and info from exam on study guide
Very nice teacher who would extend when I forgot to do assignments or got sick. Tests are very hard and specific to what she says in class. Not awful though and I think she's nice.
Dr. Ferzli is a great professor who cares about her students and want them to do well. I was able to actually learn the material because she is very knowledgeable and explains concepts well in class. However, the tests are pretty difficult and very specific + TA's are harsh graders so you must put in lots of effort for a good grade.
Dr. Ferzli is genuinely the most caring, nicest professor you could ask for. She truly loves her students and what she teaches, but her exams are incredibly difficult. If you are looking for an easy A, BIO181 with Ferzli is not that. To get As, I had to study for upwards of 12-15 hours/exam. However, I did really learn and grasp the material well.
Dr. Ferzli is a very kind professor. Be aware though, little-to-no extra credit (unless your entire class does very bad on a test), no grade drops or replacements, and extremely difficult tests with tough matching, fill in the blank, and short answer questions. You have to work very hard for an A, but it is possible with hours of studying.
A kind professor with lots of corny jokes. Soothing voice kind of put me to sleep sometimes. Content of this course is easy to grasp; but large amount of memorization is what makes it difficult. Tests are predictable & easy if you study EVERYTHING. Lectures are posted, didn't curve exams but gave an extra credit assignment. Very similar to APES.
Dr. Ferzli is a sweet, passionate professor. She is very nice and understanding of students and any personal issues overlapping with work. She does not post the slides from her class until AFTER the lecture. Her tests are very hard, and I felt like the practice tests didn't really help me prepare for them at all.
