Wonderful professor! Very clear with lots of interesting facts to share. Also very knowledgeable about all things Microbio related. Exams are pretty straightforward, and lab is fun!
intense summer session. prof is enthusiastic so you'll have to keep up with her energy. makes class relevant by adding extra info about microbiology. exams are fair and straightfoward. approachable for help outside of lecture. she's a hot pepper in this guy's book!
Good teacher. Tries really hard to help you understand the material if you don't get it the first time.
I loved this professor and this class! Attend lectures because the tests are based on them and there is no podcast. She is contagiously enthusiastic, very willing to help, and a fair grader. No surprises, just keep up on your lab work and have fun!
Intense Summer class; tests are hard and they test on high-level thinking / problem solving, so be sure to know everything at the basic level at least. Go to lectures, do the readings, ask questions about what's unclear to you. Time-intensive class, but you come away having learned a lot.
Really great professor overall, shes very sweet and caring. Homework assignments are a little tough and not very related to the lectures. Final was fair. Overall a great class for mic majors!
I took this Professor based on her ratings and I can say that I made the WRONG decision. She assigns a ridiculous amount of work, quizzes that are extremely hard because you're supposed to teach yourself before. Furthermore, she acts like this is the only class you are taking and assigns work every night. She's not accomodating, take a diff prof.
Very blunt with answers, not willing to listen/understand students' concerns. Has you do (basically) daily quizzes before every lecture. You're teaching yourself and are expected to do readings from textbook to understand material. If it wasn't my last quarter, I would be lost. Supposedly good lab prof for 104L, but sucks at lecturing basics
3 unit class? Nah, more like 5 units with the way she teaches, we're forced to self teach ourselves, and over the course of 3 weeks we were quizzed on 300 pages of reading, clicker qs, hard midterm. Take a different professor, unless this is the only class you're taking this quarter.
Rude and extremely unfair with grading. Over 20 pages of reading (from a dense science textbook) per lecture, along with a pre-lecture quiz, reading beforehand doesn't even help. Not clear with what she expects students to study for midterms. Headstrong, narrow-minded prof that gives ambiguous quizzes with multiple correct answers but only takes 1
do not take her. I never write reviews ever and I highly recommend that you DO NOT TAKE HER! so much work, you basically have to teach the content to yourself from scratch. she depends toooooooo much on reading. worst decision I made.
Created a rate my professors account just to warn others not to take Martin. Nice lady, but one of the worst professors I have ever taken. Whole class is self taught, she does not prepare you well for quizzes or midterms. Unreal expectations, I would avoid at all costs.
The worst professor I have ever taken in my life. She acts nice but in reality she is the worst teacher ever. She does not know how to teach, so she makes you self teach. Then she quizzes/tests you on these concepts you wouldn't know until grad level. Her volunteer tutors do not know what they're talking about and gave me wrong info on the midterm!
She's the worst & makes the subject unapproachable. The material she covers in class barely touches the level of understanding she expects on exams. She assigns reading from a flawed textbook that doesn't always present material clearly. This classroom environment only instills fear of failing and is not conducive to learning. Avoid her if you can!
I used to love microbiology. After taking this class, I hate microbiology with a passion. Very difficult professor to cooperate with.
A professor that, on paper, is the one that you'd want to have. She podcasts, records, and uses piazza. However, the class is entirely dependent on reading, the lectures don't help at all, and she is insistent on group learning and participation. Clicker questions make no sense and are extremely unhelpful. Absolutely hate micro because of her.
While I do agree that this class is challenging and requires a lot of work, Dr. Martin is a great lecturer and is always willing to answer questions and help students out. There is a lot of reading that is required but she is a solid professor and would take her again.
In my 3 years here, this professor has been my least favorite. Insane amount of reading and expectations for students with other classes, activities, and families to take care of. All quiz and test questions are extremely tricky, and if there are any ambiguous answers that could be right, she only accepts what she thinks is right. Do not take her.
What a waste of a good subject. Beware her class has no direction- a lot of information with a "banking style" learning system- she thinks mandatory clicker questions equals learning- wtf? Tries to micromanage individuals learning styles to mimic perhaps her own (or someone elses') no room to utilize own style- esp w no direction in lessons or cla
Easily the worst professor on campus. she cares more about her research than actually teaching kids, she also cancels office hours because she wanted to ref soccer games for extra cash? Then she gets annoyed when you dont put "work" into the class, she doesnt teach, all self taught, take someone else.
There's so much reading and even I read them, I do not know how to do the quizzes. She's just so tough and goes through so much information in each lecture. Besides, she speaks really fast and not very clear. She just doesn't know how to make things clearer. She assumes that every student has fully understood what's in the textbook.
Forces you to do things that she thinks good students have to do rather than accepting the UCD students already know what works for them. Requires textbook readings with daily quizzes, requires attendance with iClicker, weird tests with individual and group parts that waste time, sent 74 announcements in 9 wks, possibly cares too much, like a mom
Micro is already a difficult class on its own, but I had the hardest time learning from Dr Martin. The book was not very good whatsoever. Practice exams were much easier than actual exam, which were rushed since we also had to take a group exam. The class is not curved; definitely had mental breakdowns over this class. Don't recommend.
The best professor in UC Davis. I strongly recommend students who have a lower GPA to take this class. The material is accessible anywhere and the lecture notes are well organized. Practiced exams are useful. Attendance is a must and clicker points are worthy of 5%. The average of this class is B.
She's a great professor. There is A LOT of reading to do but her quizzes help you stay on track and not slack off till the end. Her lectures and readings reflect exactly what you are tested on and the practice exams, clicker questions, and resources are super helpful. I honestly don't know why so many people are complaining.
Dr. Martin tries her best to go over the information you need to know for the exams but the readings are a must. All the questions are covered in the book. Make sure to memorize and understand everything in the book that she goes over in lecture. She is always open to questions and is flexible to help students do well in her class.
I never went to OH or anything. She did for sure give tons of reading (that I sort of stopped doing) and her questions were definitely on the harder side. I did particularly well since I stopped reading the book and focused on rewatching lectures. But overall yea it was hard but I liked her, I learned a lot cuz she really makes you work for it.
Martin's command of the subject is great - she really knows her microbiology inside and out. Readings actually helped me understand the material better. That said, she's trying to reinvent the wheel with "education research" and it is a massive flop. Group tests, retakes, etc are a waste of time and cause confusion. Stick to the basics, Ms. Martin!
I really like her as a person but her class was intense. I stopped reading after the first week because it became too time consuming and instead rewatched the videos of the lectures which helped a lot more. She went too much into detail and asked incredibly complex questions on exams for an intro level class. Quizzes are also pretty difficult.
Professor Martin made this class unnecessarily difficult. I had to read every page of the textbook that she assigned. 30+ pages per class. She pulled questions directly from the textbook and they could be the smallest little bits. If you're not ready for some hard work, don't take this professor. But, personality wise she is nice and caring.
Dr. Martin was one of the best professors I met at Davis. Her class can be a bit hard and there's a lot of content covered, but she is very helpful- especially with one on one questions. She really cares about what she's teaching, and that really shows!
i was excited to take mic 104l but after that course i can genuinely say i will hate microbiology. The class itself is badly structured and not very organized. BUT the worst part was hands down my TA it is a very ta heavy course and beware of vanessa she is the worst and toughest grader not nice and extremely picky she is the equal of failing
She's gotten unfair reviews even though she's enthusiastic and caring for her students. If you actually love microbiology and work hard, she'll be one of your favorite professors ever. If you expect the class to be easy then yeah you'll hate her, but she'll still teach you a lot.
Acts kind and enthusiastic, but if you actually try to talk to her youll find out she is rude and demeaning. Some of her comments were personal and hurtful. In addition she is a really hard grader and unclear about assignment criteria.
Great professor enjoyed having inspiring conversations with her. Class was extremely hard, but learned a lot so it was worth it.
Worst Professor ever. Never make things clear. What we read in the textbook, learned in the lecture and worksheets is one thing and what's in her test is another.
Her notes are not useful at all. She gives too many readings and there's no way to know what to focus on for the exam. Unnecessarily hard class with super unclear explanations. Her lectures are boring and monotonous as well.
You'll have to read A LOT. Readings have to be done before lecture. Pre-lecture quizzes, clicker questions, individual(85%) and group exams(15% of your grade), worksheets, boring lectures, & NO CURVE sums up this class. Highly avoid if you can. She needs to understand not everyone is a microbio major & this is INTRO to mic. AVOID and save your GPA!
I was excited to take MIC but bad experience with her. Why do they even pay her? She does clicker questions so people won't skip class. She also has a stuffed bacteria toy that she throws around the class and whoever catches it has to answer the question. You can't fall behind at all if you want to pass. Basically memorize the book and pass. (:
The worst professor Ive had at UC Davis by FAR. Expects student to know way too much specific info for an intro course. Tests are super tricky and assigns about 60 pages of reading every week. Do yourself and your gpa a favor and dont take her.
Do NOT take this prof! This is a 3 unit class but the workload is equivalent to 5 units. On top of that this is supposed to be an INTRO class but the material she teaches is way too in depth. She doesn't prepare you for exams/worksheets. OH, and there are 2 quizzes every week which are impossible to get a good score on. Don't waste your time w/ her
By far one of the worst professors you will take in your life. Period. I regret taking this class. If you want to go to medical school, save your GPA and don't even think about taking this course with her. Not even in your dream.
Lectures do not equal the exams. Assigns more than 30 pages to read per night. Textbook exams I wish I could go back in time and never show up to class, never take notes in lecture, and just focus on the book.
She is the WORST you will ever encounter. If you do end up taking this class, take it for P/NP. Otherwise take this course with a different professor. She will murder your GPA. I mean it
Pro: You can tell she really loves to teach and provides students with a lot of resources on topics she's lecturing on. Con: She literally treats you like a child. Doesn't take into account the fact that not everyone in the class learns material the same. The class consisted of nothing but busy work. Please do yourself a favor, take someone else
There's no question that she is knowledgable about microbio and loves to teach us students about the subject. However, I didn't exactly enjoy microbio after taking this class. Imo, the textbook reading/quizzes was unhelpful and concepts taught in class were not exactly reflected on tests. Exam questions were tricky and can easily confuse you.
this is not an intro class. you are required to understand/remember the whole textbook. lecture notes are pointless. her exam questions are very complex and require much more time to do than given since its a 2 part exam. she wont tell you to know specific microbes but they will be on the exams as if you're an expert. NO CURVE so be prepared.
The heavily weighed exams are extremely difficult and you don't get enough time. The online quizzes, 3 worksheets, and a plethora of other weekly assignments will make you work your ass off, even though they make up a small percentage of the grade. Btw she loves tedious assignments. Make a document of study questions to prep for exams.
The other comments are far more harsh than necessary. Yeah she's hard, makes you read a lot, and has lots of assignments but its not thaaaat bad. Read, do the homeworks, do the practice exams, and you'll be fine. iClicker questions, mandatory reading, no curve, 2 stage exams, 3 homeworks, bi-weekly quizzes. She's super nice and knowledgable!
Hard class for sure. I don't think it was the professor, just a lot of material to cover. There are online quizzes before every lecture but, they helped me learn the material better. The tests are not what the practice exam is. This class takes a lot of time.
As a senior in bio, I have prior experience with most of the material being taught in this class, yet I still struggle to answer test questions pertaining to material I've learned MULTIPLE times before simply bc she phrases them strangely and you have to think like she does to know the answer. If you don't have a strong background in bio... well gl
If you aren't experienced with upper div bio classes, avoid her. Students who found this class doable had already taken the upper div bio classes & she teaches as if you already have that sort of background knowledge. Group exam score & extra credit saved my grade in the class. She's also super stingy with points. Tons of reading doesn't help.
Too much material with no emphasis. There are 8-14 study questions for chapter and 17 ch's total, 3 worksheets on material she did no teach, readings (30+ pages) before each lecture on hard quizzes, the exams are tricky and do not cover what you learn in lecture or slides, lectures are heavy and dry (no emphasis), hard grader and picky. GET OUT!
As everyone else said, the material is very heavy. Prof. talk super fast. Everyday before lecture, you have to read >30 pages to do online quizzes + 3 worksheets + iClicker Qs in every slides. The midterms are very hard, (short-time with tricky written questions) also gathering in group to do the multiple choice Qs. You can't get back your exams.
I used to complain about how much work I had to do for this class When I was taking it. But now that I am in grad school, i'm super grateful for her class. She prepared me well for the PCAT and graduate school. Sometimes I need to refresh my memory about MIC for some topics in pharmacy school and her slides are super helpful. You gotta work for it!
Took Dr. Martin for MIC 104L. I mostly interacted with the TA's and she would pop in once in a while, but gave us a lot of work for a 3 unit lab class. She's nice but she definitely expected a lot from us. Felt more like a 5-6 unit class.
You have to work for it, but you learn a lot in this class. The classes are super interactive which helps you stay on top things. Definitely go to class! Dr. Martin is also very accessible outside of class.
I took this class because I thought Dr. Bragg would be teaching it. Dr. Martin just isn't as great and the class is unnecessarily challenging. We had to do a scratch off quiz as a group which might seem easy, but it just gives you a headache. Her entry visas are really hard and there is no clear criteria for what points are taken off.
As someone who is not a bio major, this class was unnecessarily hard in my opinion. Prof. Martin skips right over topics without going into detail, or breaking the info into simpler terms. I can read a book on my own, I attend class so a teacher can make the info more understandable. She does NOT do that. Tests on complex concepts.
Very approachable and bubbly. She offers very good feedback and is very helpful during lab classes. The class demos are a bit long winded but she does a good job with them.
Contradicts textbook frequently during her heavily weighted exams and quizzes. Gets offended easily. Avoid.
Online due to COVID-19 She gives 2 weekly quizzes on the material of each lecture that is ABOUT TO take place, so she expects you to read ahead and magically understand it. Doesn't teach, relies on textbook. About 20-30% of every question she writes are deliberate trick questions. Unforgiving and she gets defensive if you challenge her grading.
She is a very nice person but it was a lot of work for a 3 unit class. She claimed that she toned down the weekly readings because past classes complained but they were still 30+ pages a week and difficult to understand. Tests were very challenging and not curved. She is very approachable but the exams went way further than the lecture material.
She keeps changing everything over the quarter. It was a disaster each time she changes something. Even though I build up A grade, each time she says anything can destroy it. I recommend you to take this class with other professors. My friend took it with the other one and said this class is easy. Be nice to yourself and not to take this pro.
DO NOT read the 102 reviews if you are looking to take her for 104L; it's a completely different ballgame. 104L with her is fantastic. I took micro lab at my community college which certainly helped me in this class. Otherwise you have to work hard and read and stay ahead. She is very helpful outside of class and no question is stupid.
Please avoid this professor. She does not have logic when providing the lecture. The lecture is boring and you can't determine which concept is more important. I only learn things from readings, quizzes and midterms... You can definitely study without this professor. The exam is hard and the rubric is ridiculous. Be nice to yourself.
Pre-quizs, worksheets and midterms are disasters. A lot of readings you need to read before the quiz, but you still do not know the correct answer. Each problem she gave is unclear, like you can do this way or that way, all seems to work, but no credits. Worksheets and midterms are all short answers, and seldom of answer comes from the textbook.
All she does is show pictures during the lecture and barely go over any important concepts. The quiz and midterm questions are extremely difficult, even when having done all the reading and watched all lectures. On top of that, she docks points for so many little things with little partial credit. Save yourself and don't take this class with her.
I thought they were very nice to students, but the lack of sincerity and realism when writing exams versus actually relaying that information in the lecture was ridiculous. Considering this was remote, it made matter matters even worse and her grading was so particular and required meticulous details for .5 pts on a 50pt worksheet/exam!
Dr. Martin is a fantastic professor, especially in the online format. All open note exams and worksheets. Anyone complaining about them clearly didn't work hard because they were very easy. She's generous with points and drops 2 lowest quizzes. The class is honestly very straightforward and not hard at all if you pay attention in lecture.
I really wanted to learn about MIC. I was so excited. But her lectures were so dry and she doesn't know how to make something sound interesting. I kid you not. I learned nothing from this class. If you ask me something, I would not be able to answer. Her quizzes were so book heavy but the book was not helpful. It was very dense and ill written.
Since it is COVID, however I feel like we have to self-teach ourself by reading the textbook. In the lecture, the professor just densely self introduce the material and then it become more of a conversation class. The quiz are hard and the test are hard. Best to avoid her if you are ready to read the textbook and self teach yourself.
She's so enthusiastic about microbes in lectures! Very generous with a couple of EC opportunities, 2 quizzes dropped, and 1/3 exams dropped. If you've taken biochem and/or genetics then the class should be relatively easy, if not, the readings are kinda long but doable and lectures emphasize what's on exams.
Dr. Martin is a great choice, don't know why she has such a low rating. She drops two quizzes, an optional exam, and gives us extra credit. Her class is textbook heavy so be ready to read. Her exams are short answer which gives you the chance to explain your answers for maximum points. Very nice professor great choice for this class.
I'm not sure why her reviews are so bad. I think she's a solid choice for MIC 102. She does grade harshly + there were too little assignments for my liking, but her class is definitely manageable (albeit a lot of work for a 3 unit class) + I think she's an interesting lecturer. Take advantage of your resources. Read the book to do well on quizzes!
Not a good teacher. Lectures do not prepare you for exams. You have to teach yourself the material. Reading the textbook is the only way to succeed. Information you learn in class does not fulfill requirements needed for exams. Exams and assignments are graded to very specific detail, which is not presented clearly in lecture.
Good professor. Lectures are boring but make sure to keep up with reading. She was really generous and dropped 2 quizzes (instead of 1) and always gave points back if a question wasn't fair overall. She does grade a bit harsh. She looks for specific key terms in responses. Optional final replace a midterm so course wasn't that bad. Not bad overall.
Never take her
The quizzes were heavily tested on the book, but her exams neither followed the book nor her lectures! The lectures were ok but the information was so superficial that it made them useless. The structure of the exam is horrendous. There are many questions on content that we never came across in class. Just don't take this class!
Exam and worksheet questions were hard to decipher and had extreme detail to them to the point where you always have to memorize for exams. Does not drop anything but has these rescue points that no one understood what was going on with them. Lectures were boring where people only attended due to the clicker points that counted for the grades.
If you're looking to learn microbiology, look somewhere else. I went to every single class section and did not learn a thing from them. The only thing I learned was through spending hours and hours reading and taking notes on the textbook. Her worksheets and tests are poorly worded and confusing and she is not accommodating or understanding.
Not the best professor I've had, but she definitely does NOT deserve awful ratings. You will learn more from taking notes on the textbook and treating lecture as review, though it demands a LOT of time bc the textbook is dense. Lecture is "mandatory" since there are rescue points. She posts the reading schedule, so I recommend getting a head start.
So much material. The tests were very difficult, and require a mastery of the material -> always analysis and figuring things out. Also weird tests with half of the time working in a group of 4, your grade essentially depends on how lucky you get choosing your partners.
Changed her last name to Markum. Can't speak for MIC102 but MIC104L is more about learning lab techniques and making mistakes don't necessarily mean you will lose points. A lot of busy work and easy to fall behind but if you stay on top of things and do a thorough job you will be fine. Prelab quizzes can be tricky. No curve, standard grading scale
Mic102 and Mic104L, as long with other microbiology courses with Dr. Martin were my favorite courses i took at davis. The material, laboratory skills, and critical thinking that she teaches you are crucial skills that helped me in my career as a lab tech and CLS. If it wasnt for what I had learned in her class, life post grad wouldve been harder
The lab techniques that Dr Miriam teaches in her lab courses are important if you want to pursue a laboratory or microbiology career following graduation. The class does require commitment to staying on top of work, but it is very rewarding. Stay up to date with material you have to read and your lab notebook and you will be fine!!
Idk why she has bad reviews, im guessing you have to beware of reviews from kids who don't like having to put in work or read more than they want to. Mic102 and Mic104L that I took with her were my favorite courses at uc davis. They teach you great things and interesting material (if you're truly interested in microbio) Just do the work and keep up
I took her MIC104L class and thought the course overall was fair. I believe that if you put in the effort, you can AT LEAST get a B or B+ in the class. Obviously, if you want an A, I strongly suggest going to her office hours or going over worksheets before turning it in. She is very helpful and genuinely cares for students!
MIC 104L w/ Dr. M was my favorite class at Davis (granted microbio was my major). I really enjoyed the hands on component and always looked forward to lab as a nice break from sitting in lectures. Dr. M's instruction of this course was very fair and she always made her expectations clear. You'll be great as long as you stay on top of your work!!
I enjoyed how Dr. M would connect the material to areas beyond microbio considering it's not just microbio majors taking the course. Clear expectations and lots of outside resources/guidance if needed. You can also tell Dr. M is super passionate about microbio and what she does, so she's amazing to talk to if you're looking to learn more.
There's a lot of material to read and you have to stay on top of your lab reports, but Dr. M was amazing in that you could really tell she cares about her students; as seen from the way she taught (live demos, explaining every step to new procedures, open office hours, and being friendly when we had questions).
