The lectures are enjoyable enough, although she seems very ill at ease (forced smiles at weird moments). She is a hard marker, but it was kind of a nice challenge.

you can have an opinion in her class as long as you've had her before or know her very well; otherwise have her opinion, but that won't work either. just don't take her. you can ask questions but the answers dont apply.

A bit scary at first (she's not at all as strict as her first lecture about "rules of the classroom" seems), but actually not bad at all. Generally clear and insightful. Has some quirky habbits, but nothing bad, just odd.

Yes Miriam is a hard ass. But she's really nice - she just doesn't tolerate idiots! People don't like her because she isn't a push over and won't give you good grades if you don't work for it.

Funny how most ratings have focused on her physical eccentricties rather than the class taken. Miriam is a very intelligent person and I guess the majority find that intimidating. Who cares if she has funny facial ticks? The woman knows her stuff and has a passion for what she teaches.

Her lectures are all over the place, never clear what she's trying to say. Very inconsistent marker. Rewards nothing for creativity or effort, only for rephrasing her opinions. Anyone who actually likes her is an obvious kiss-ass.

I am totally afraid of this woman. She is like a robot! Random creepy smiles at inappropriate times. She writes all over your work. Now, you may be thinking, that's because you're a crappy writer, but no, that's not even it. That aside, her lectures are reasonable interesing and easy to sit through.

Mirriam is very intelligent and obviously knows her stuff, BUT the lectures are boring and she expects a lot. There is a wrong and right answer to almost everything in her class. On the bright side, she will push you to be a better english student.

Miriam is a good teacher. No she won't just give you an A cause everyone else does. No she won't babysit you. Yeah she's harsh, but you actually LEARN something about being a good writer instead of just getting a shiny GPA booster. If you go and TALK to her you'd find she's a very nice person and very helpful.

Did not consider personal opinion or life experiences in writings. Good grades were only given to those who regurgitated her words. Was very rude to students who shared their life experiences in class while reflecting on what an author was saying. Some people know their stuff, but this doesnt mean that they should be teaching it, Miriam for examp

Miriam is an amazing teacher. She doesn't hand out good grades just because. You really have to work for them, and it makes them all the more valuable. Go see her and you'll be fine and ACTUALLY read your books :)

Sympathy goes out to all those who Miriam personally attacked during class. I was one of them. I often enjoyed the lecture topics but class was made unbearable by her. I'm a A student, she just didnt like me or my opinions and made me pay by humiliating me and by grading me low. If u want to regurgitate her opinions go ahead. I dont recommend her.

She's a pretty tough prof, expects a lot out of an entry level class. Which might be good for some. She marks low, and is very liable to shoot down your ideas. And she does take paragraphs out of your papers and puts them on display.. but she keeps it anonymous. She has a very creepy smile...

Some of her lectures were fairly difficult to grasp if you weren't familiar with...let's say...the fisher king myth. I think she expects her students to already know a whole lot about certain things before entering her classes. However, she is remarkably intelligent, and very helpful in teaching how to properly construct an essay.

Assigns a LOT of reading. You will pretty much need to refrain from having any sort of life if you want to be able to do well in her class. She is very intelligent (pretty much the smartest person I have ever come across.) She expects you to know a lot before you enter her class, and if you dont, you will not be able to follow her lectures.

The first time I had a class with Miriam, I struggled because I had never had an instructor who expected so much out of students. The second time I took her, however, I was more prepared and I did much better. She definately has high expectations for her students, but if you do your work you'll learn a lot. She taught me how to write better essays.

All I am going to say is avoid Miriam like the plague. She is a big fan of public humilliation and rediculous workloads. I am pretty sure she wants her students to be just as miserable as she is. Creepiest semi-smile ever.

I found that after I got used to her that she was incredibly helpful. My advice is to take her comments into account when you write second and third essays and edit 7 or 8 times. It is not impossible to get a good grade in her course

Miriam really encourages classroom discussion and uses a process of graded responses to help determine participation marks. She can seem intimidating but it's just because she's incredibly intelligent. Her marking was fair and she was available outside of class for questions/concerns. I'd take her again.

do not take her classes. she loves to shoot people down in class if they don't agree with her way of reading a story. she has completely discouraged me from going to class. i can't stand the two hours i have to listen to her read to me from the text i already read. waste of time. avoid her.

I believe tough but fair describes her perfectly. Don't take her courses if you want to pad your grade. If you want to really challenge yourself she's the teacher you want. Though she marks hard she allows rewrites and genuinely loves the material she teaches and encourages you. Highly recommended if that sort of teacher appeals to you.

High expectations, but very fair and inspiring. Really knows her stuff. Has no respect for BS so don't try it on her. You actually have to learn the material (and there is a fair amount of it). Best professor I have ever had, highly recommend to those who love English and learning. If you just want an easy grade forget it.

Avoid this prof. She humiliates students. It didn't matter how hard I tried (and I really tried), I ended up with a much lower grade than in any other class.

Avoid her at all costs. She undermines and devalues those opinions that conflict with hers. She picks favourites (those who are too outspoken and only agree with her) and disregards everyone else. Her marking style is pure discouragement and offers no advice or ways to improve. Lectures are painfully boring and poorly structured. Keep away!

Though not the easiest marker, I learned more in her classes than I have in any other. She expects students to have done the reading and to put thought and effort into their essays. Take a class with Miriam if you are actually trying to learn something in university. My favorite prof.

All through high school I had been praised for my writing, receiving top marks on my provincial. I was shocked coming into her class and receiving such low marks. She has high expectations. This doesn't make her a bad teacher. This is grammar and essay writing course, be prepared to pump out some good work. If you want any easy ride, don't take her

Miriam is a good prof. She has high expectations, but if you want to learn, her courses are worth taking. Don't worry too much about her opinions or being shot down in class. Just think your questions through and don't yap on and on. And put in the work on the papers. She is a fair person and will respect that.

Marks super hard and doesnt explain topics for essays well enough to understand what to write. Tells students one thing but expects a totally different thing from their work. For a first year class, she treats her students like they should be handing in third year work.

Miriam is awesome. She's passionate and pulls you in & makes you want to learn. She has clear expectations and goes out of her way to prepare you. People need to realise that an A in highschool English means nothing in university. She's awesome & I will take more classes. You can tell she's a kind hearted person.

Miriam is one of the best professors here. She is brilliant and passionate about teaching, and she made me want to be a better student. Expect to work hard, really hard but expect to be rewarded with in depth knowledge, not just superficial understanding. Miriam is the smartest of the smart, and everyone should take a class with her!

Miriam is a tough teacher. She is super knowledgeable and may seem disinterested in her students at first. If you work hard in her class, she shows interest in you and is encouraging to those students. She's funny, but you have to get used to her. I enjoyed her teaching, but she could be more clear with first year students.

She is tough, but I think its worth it. Her class demands a lot of reading. She is a clear lecturer, she post all the slides from class online. Shess a tough professor that makes you want to work hard. She is really understanding and easy to talk to if you have an questions or concerns. I really enjoyed my class with her.

Very tough marker and teacher. There are too many novels that students have to read in her course. Also, she does not seem to be interested in her students. She talks down to them and does not want to help them. She is very intimidating.

Miriam is one of the hardest markers I have ever had at UFV. She is very strict about punctuation, tenses, and mla formatting. That being said, I learned more from her in one class than I have in any other. I highly recommend her. Expect LOTS OF READING. She likes to have a LOT of novels in her classes. Overall, great proff and very smart person.

Very helpful instructor, her ability to clarify any misunderstood formatting, tenses or grammar is very good. I learned more about writing and proper grammar in this class than I have in previous courses. Very clear about expectations for readings , homework, assignments or essays. A hard marker, class participation and attendance matter!

No denying Miriam is a tough prof, but if you take the class seriously then it will all pay off. She is very knowledgable and can deliver some of the most engaging lectures I have heard on campus. Be prepared for brutally fair marking and critical feedback, but she is hands down amazing and her input will set you up for success if you apply it.

Sometimes its less that she's talking to you and more that she's talking to the ghost of the author you're studying. It almost feels as if no matter what you do, you're grade will not change. Almost as if she tries to ride on charisma she doesn't have. Not a bad person, not a great teacher either. Really easy to day dream in her class.

I absolutely loved Miriam's class, she is very passionate about literature and that shows in her lectures. She is very personable and easy to talk to, when needing clarification she is willing to take the time and help. Hard marker but I really think that can make you a better student, and she gives great feed back to make you a better writer.

Her lectures can be quite boring, but worth it. She won't walk you through a text in terms of plot, so make sure you have read it, but she does extensively cover metaphor, symbolism and meaning which is helpful. she expects a lot of reading done in a short peroid of time (a book a week usually). She marks hard, but allows re writes, so its good.

Miriam does not enjoy teaching academic writing at all and makes sure that you know it. There was minimal feedback for essays so it was nearly impossible to improve your grade and she is an extremely tough marker. Do not recommend her for Engl 105.

Super hard prof for first year english literature class. Makes you do a 20 minute presentation on your own and doesn't really clarify expectations. It's pretty much you learning on your own and she's their to regulate in class discussion on readings. Overall ok .

If you don't write the way she does or have the same ideas she has for a piece of literature, she'll give you a bad grade. She "anonymously" grades people's work in front of the class, which is kind of demeaning. She's good at passively putting people down.

If you show up to class with the material read and somewhat understood, you'll do fine in the class. Sometimes, she will call on people to answer questions about the book. There is 1 presentation, 2 take home essays, a midterm essay and a final in-class essay. All in all, she's a good prof if you do your end of the work.

Miriam is super energetic and passionate about everything she teaches. She gives great background to every poem we cover and gave us more than enough time to complete our assignments. She also allows rewrites for all assignments. Very excellent teacher, I really learned a lot.

Miriam is a great prof. If you listen to what she says and learn from your mistakes, your mark will improve over the semester. My mark started at a 70, and now I'm nearing 80 and there are still some more assignments left of the semester. She is very easy-going and will help you however she can if you ask.

She is a very nice prof but if your ideas don't match up with hers, the likeliness of receiving a good mark is slim. She seems to only want you to think like her, which is not what English classes should be - interpretation only counts when it's her own. Other than that, it's still possible to do good in her class if you put in the effort

I was so disappointed in this class. Nothing was cohesive. At the end of the semester many of us STILL do not understand what this class was supposed to be about. The material was all over the place, and was very philosophy heavy. For those of us who were not philosophy students in the class, it was insulting and irritating. Avoid this class.

I graduated a while ago, but when I think back to my uni days this professor still haunts me. We had an assignment once to write about "a personal incident" and Momo:) chose one good example and one bad example. She put my bad ex. up on display and I sat there while the class discussed why my writing was sh*t while mocking my "personal incident".
