she goes through the material really fast and quizzes are not even on the material, there is ALOT OF HOMEWORK!!! take this teacher if you want a tough teacher, YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!!
Misako isn't the best professor ever she is ok. She tries so hard to teach the material you can see in her eyes when she is lecturing. She actually spoon feeds you steps through problems which most professors don't do, and she is very good looking. Over all she is average on teaching.

She is an extremely dedicated professor. She is also very helpful and goes slow enough for students to understand the work. She's nice too.
She is so helpful! She does have an accent but after you get used to its easy to understand. Excellent teacher that will is willing to work with you untill you completely understannd the material. Without her help, I wouldn't have passed the class. Thank you Misa!
Misako is an AWESOME Precalculus teacher. If she goes a little too fast in her teaching, tell her! She is EXTREMELY helpful when it comes to office hours. She'll answer all of your questions. She knows her stuff. She a cute and funny professor. TAKE HER! Do your work, do your best on her tests and you'll pass. I got an A.
Best Professor Ever! You will learn a lot from her and she is so helpful!
Dont look away from the board.
Misa is the reason I love math. She was far and beyond THEE best teacher I've ever had in ALL my years of schooling. I wish I could have Misa for every subject. I actually learned in her class, she's incredibly approachable. attendance isnt mandatory but who wouldn't want to be in her class?! number one teacher. PERIOD.
she is extremely helpfull inside of class and during her office hours. moves pretty fast but is very easy to follow along. there is a lot of homework though but it IS college
Took her over the summer, and her teaching style really works. She keeps you alert during class with wrkshts, hmwk, and she'll sometimes call on u during class even if u sit in the back like I did, so pay attention! She does examples relevant to hw probs and gets u ready for the tests. I aced both tests and final by studying her notes alone.
Misa is the best! She explains concepts well and will go out of her way to help students after class and during office hours. Homework is collected biweekly, tests/quizzes are challenging but fairly written. I highly recommend taking her for Math 19 especially if you have struggled with Precalculus before. Work hard and you'll do well.
She is the best MATH teacher i had so far at SJSU! She explains concepts well and will go out of her way to help students after class and during office hours. She also prepers you for the tests/quizzes by giving you study guides. I highly recommend taking her for Math 70.
She is very helpful, she is willing to have her students go to her office hours. Though her accent and her teaching skills is VERY hard to understand what she is talking about. NEVER LOOK AWAY FROM THE BOARD. Quizes/tests were hard, she puts problems on there that we never went over. Try to avoid.
She is one of very good professors at SJSU. She is very helpful, willing to help students even out of her office hour. Very nice teacher. She gives you many chances to get extra credit. The rest is your efforts. A lot of home work but helpful for your exams. Three exams and one final. You should take her class. Nice accent like in the +18 movie.
Prof. Van Der Poel is super sweet. She really wants her students to not only pass the course, but understand the material as well. My only negative would be that she calls on students. It's a little high school-y to me, and I hate being put on the spot. Other than that, she's super easy. She offers SO much extra points, it's insane. Take her!
Not an easy class for me. She was very helpful though and cares about the students learning. I failed all but one test with grades with D and lower, and still passed the class. Make sure you do all the homework and show up to class. Put in the time to learn your stuff and you should be fine. She is super helpful, and she wants everyone to learn!
Easy class if you work at it a little. She can be really obnoxious though, didn't let us use calculators even though her syllabus said so. Attendance not mandatory, but can be extra credit and homework is given at the beginning of the semester and turned in through weekly increments
Let's just clear one thing up: if you have a hard time with math, DO NOT take her. Although she tries to be helpful, her poor english and not-to-the-point teaching style confuse everyone. She is not an effective teacher, but as a class it IS easy if you have already taken a similar math class. Recommended for those who are already gifted at math.
She "appears" to be very nice during class and she is, but she isn't nice when it comes to grading or tests. Had 8 HWs, dropped lowest 2. Had 4 quizzes, 2 take home. 2 Midterms and 1 Final. 10% on lower scored midterm, and 30% on higher scored. She really wants to help, and it shows, but if you try to talk to her about your grade, good luck.
She seems nice at first but she really isnt.It seems like she dosnt even teach. I do NOT recommend this teacher!!!
I loved Prof Van Der Poel. She's super nice yes, but her tests are can be tough, so study. She offers tons of extra credit, and if you show progress and effort it will be reflected kindly in your final grade. She really want's to see all her students do well. I would take her again in a heartbeat!
Her class is challenging, but as long as you study enough you'll be fine. She is very fair as far as grading and gives plenty of opportunity for extra credit.
Differentials is not easy She so nice makes it clear easy to understand, gives extra credit, always available in office for help, has review sessions for midterms(3) and final, Gives her own note packets no need to read book, HW is odd problems to check your work which helps. Those who say she's hard it's because they probably missed class.TAKE HER!
Pros: Very nice and helpful to students, grades fairly, gives clear lectures and lots of examples. She the best for 133A especially if you struggle with math. Cons: She didn't discipline several very disruptive students who interrupted class frequently and cheated often. Also the pacing of the class was too fast, but she did try to make up for it.
Overall very helpfull inside class and office hours. However, quizzes and tests are never even remotely similar to practice tests she gives. Almost seems like she intentionally tries to "trick" you (which is probably not the case). Calculators are not permitted on the tests and grading seems rather harsh.
I've never been good at math so this class was difficult. A lot of the times I walked out of the classroom confused because she didn't do a very good job of describing everything. She is very helpful in her office hours though, so go to those. She definitely takes your effort put it into consideration, so try your hardest. I got a C+.
If you depend on homework for a good grade do not take this class. you are only graded for 3 categories: 1: quizes 2:tests 3:Final Exam. this class is so hard to understand and even with modified accomidations i still feel like i don't get enough time on her 15 minute quizes. do not take her
Sometimes it's hard to get around her accent, but she's willing to repeat herself and clarify for students. Unfortunately, the grade depends on tests and quizzes, so it's a little difficult to get a good grade. However, as long as you do the homework, you'll do fine on the tests. Also, GO TO CLASS. It helps.
She dint help me learn the material at all!Her accent makes it hard to pay attention and she dosent understand students very well so she never seemed to be able to answer question correctly. I relly regret taking this class since your grade depends mostly on your test its relly hard to get a high grade.
I absolutely love her. She makes math class engaging and positive, and this is coming from a student who failed high school algebra. She is extremely clear on both concepts and assignments, and is also a super nice and funny person to boot. And honestly, if you can't understand her accent, I don't see how you understand basic English either.
She's hilarious, and she wants you to pass the class. She definitely boosts the crap out of your grade at the end of the semester with all the extra credit .Youll have a couple of lenthy Webassigns a week, but you get used to it. Solid teacher, solid class, I don't regret taking her.
horribly unorganized teacher. had her over summer; tests every monday and many hw's due every week. scrambles through lectures and isnt to the point. the hw usually doesnt pertain very well to tests and tests often contain material very briefly/not covered in class. doesnt manage time well, we were a week behind; ec opportunity taken away as well.
She tries very hard to make sure everyone understands the material and as a result the lectures move slowly. (Our class ended up a week behind at one point) Her tests usually have a few questions which aren't covered in the homework. She is very helpful when you go to her office hours.
I took her calc three class over the summer and I seriously felt that if I had taken her class over the semester I could have earned an A but a B is fine too! She is a great lecturer and she even writes our notes for us and all I have to do is fill in the blanks! So she really baby's us I think and it helps! He does have an accent but honestly I never had an issue with it. I never went to her office hours but I'm sure she would have been helpful. Also there is no CURVE and we had mc exams
Best math teacher I have ever had. She teaches the material very well and will elaborate herself if you do not understand the subject. She is also more than happy to help during her office hours which are very helpful as well. She's very committed and devoted into teaching, I would take her class again if given the opportunity. Highly recommended!
Wonderful math professor. Very helpful in and out of class. Attendance not mandatory but go and arrive on time. Sometimes extra credit 1st min of class. And every day has 1+pt problem at end. Those points seriously matter in the end. Definitely do study guides. Highly recommend her for Calculus!
Show her that you're really trying in the course and you'll pass. I did terribly on the quizzes/tests but ended up passing. Frequently asked her questions/went to office hours and study sessions. She's very helpful and an awesome professor.
She was really helpful and it was obvious she really wants everyone to understand the material. Her tests were kind of hard but tried to accommodate everyone due to results from the first test. You really need to attend class to understand the material unless calculus comes naturally to you. Overall I think she's been the best math teacher Ive had!
She's very nice. I think her only problem is her accent. She's not a native speaker, so that's acceptable to me. Her lecture is very clear, quiz and exams are easy (If you attend all the class and do homework). I love her class cuz I don't need to buy book. All the homework are online, and she sends out worksheets for new chapter.
Go to class and do the homework and basically work hard. Go to office hours so she will see that you care. Despite the fact that the class was hard, she really is a teacher who cares about her students understanding the material so that's why I would take her again. (but really go to class because she gives extra credit and it'll help)
This class was a breeze. Even if this is your first time taking Calculus, the class should not be too bad. She extremely simplifies the topics for you (maybe a bit too much). Test questions are very similar to hw problems. Extra credit is aplenty. 3 midterms (100 pts each), 25 counted hw assignments (4 pts each), and a cumulative final (200 pts).
Don't try to take.
She has a really harsh accent but she can explain the material very well. She will work with you if you can't understand a problem. Test can be tough but she'll allow a cheatsheet so if you know how to use the fomulas you should be good. All homework is online. Textbook is not required. Going to class helps to rack up extra credit
I would not recommend to take her class. Her lectures were bad and left every one confused. No clarity. Her accent made it very difficult to understand. Then, her tests were completely different than the homework.
Terrible teacher. She can't speak english properly and expect teach math. Students asks a question and most of the time she doesn't understand the question to answer them. There's a lot of print out and many pop-quiz and worksheet at the end of each class. My grade was so low because of those. Test and final are randomly hard.
Van Der Poel is a great professor! She does have an accent but I never found it to be a problem (and I'm usually really bad at understanding accents). She's funny, caring and really wants you to pass the class. Expect to work hard because this is still difficult material. Do the practice tests she has on her website; the tests are very similar!
Prof. van der Poel does have an accent but her lectures are clear enough, it seems like she wants her students to pass and its very helpful. Overall, i think she is pretty good the only thing is that her exams are extremely! Hard and often didnt have time to finish them on time. SHE GAVE A LOT OF POP QUIZES so you cant miss class. Also Tough grader
Tests are HARD; a lot of pop quizzes usually they're every Friday at the end of class, but sometimes she likes to "surprise" you guys & have it right after she taught something or the beginning of class. So make sure you come on time because you CANNOT make up those quizzes. SOMETIMES gives E.C. quizzes. DO NOT BUY TEXTBOOK, uses webassign instead
A more recent rating: all this talk about extra credit... where? She does not blatantly say in class that if we do a certain assignment or problem, then we get extra credit. There are no extra credit quizzes, just a lot of quizzes. You might be able to get extra credit by going to her office hours and asking questions, but good luck.
Not a native speaker and can barely hear her. Very unclear, and often answers questions by asking the question to another student. Tests are much more difficult compared to what is taught in class. Unforgivably strict on grading, when even she herself frequently makes mistakes during lecture. Teaches by solving simple problems from the book.
Overall she is a good professor, but the material is too hard. The strong accent makes it harder to understand. Normally, she would post worksheets on her website and we have to print it out and bring to the class; homework is on WebAssign, and it is easy to finish within an hour. However, when it comes to the exams, it will become very difficult.
Overall, she was one of the worst professors I had. She teaches really fast and the worst part is, her practice tests are half as hard as the real tests. I would NEVER take a class with her again and suggest everyone be cautious of taking her class.
She makes the test so hard you would have never thought of those problems. Goes through lecture notes fast and asks students questions before even teaching the material. The worst part is she would give quizzes the last 7-10 minutes or even less.. Avoid this professor for your own good or else you won't pass OR learn.
Her Tests are so tough for you to pass. She won't grade easily. And not much extra credit
Lectures were generally confusing and a bit hard to follow. Most questions that students had were redirected to other students to answer. VERY hard tests, and quizzes are a regular thing. Expect a quiz every week, she gives them 5-10 minutes before the end of class. Lots of homework but those are free points. Caring professor, wouldnt recommend.
She tries her best to lecture the material in class, although she can be very unclear at times. Make sure you have access to a printer because she will make you print everything. Her practice exams don't really prepare you well for the exams. She doesn't have a practice final, so practicing the midterm problems is very important to pass the final.
Her lectures can be very confusing and hard to understand. Her test are very challenging and require you to study a lot. She also gives you a study guide for each test but they are not very useful for exams, so you will have to go over everything in the unit in order to do well on exams and final
It's a very difficult class to pass
She is funny and she gives extra credit.
She was very lenient with the grading of our exams. Homework load was average, due at the end of the week which was helpful. Always enjoyed going to class because she's really funny and made it enjoyable. Studying off of the study guides alone will do nothing. The material on the study guide is 10x easier than the exams. All quizzes are group, swag
take her if you want to work hard. there pop quizzes, if u r not present, then no make ups for quizzes. she uses webassign for homework. gives material to practice, but not so much related to the exams. there will be 3 midterms and a final.
Prof Van der Poel was a fantastic teacher for calculus 1. Although you have to work hard for your grade, its a great learning experience. The first few days of class may be seem very overwhelming; however you will get used to it. Make sure you go to class everyday. Her practice exam were also very similar to her exams! LOTS OF Extra Credit!!
The lectures are extremely helpful and make reviewing the concepts at a later time easy to follow. If you understand the practice exams well, you'll do just fine.
Van Der Poel is very confusing. If I hadn't taken AP Calc in high school I would be extremely lost in her class. In fact, I believe that although I knew most of the material prior taking this class, attending it has made me lose a grasp on the concepts she covered.
Van Der Poel does not understand how to teach a class. She will ask for questions but don't bother wasting your breath. Rather than explaining the problem like a rational human being she will ask a random student to explain the answer. Do you understand whats going on, to bad your the new teacher, go explain to the class what you don't know.
Has students answer other students questions, makes you calculate your own grade even before her office hours, random and lots of iclicker questions, not very thorough in her explanations, take home quizzes are given randomly and are take home (must get it in by the exact start time of class)
To begin, the homework she assigns is absolutely different then what she teaches in class. She doesn't allow you to use a calculator but all the problems on web assign require it. She slightly goes over a review but its very vague and doesnt match up with the exam. I went to every class and completed every assignment and had a very hard time AVOID
When describing Professor Van Der Poel, I honestly like her class because of how she lightens the mood and funny. However, the thing I have wrong with her class is how the exams is harder than examples and practice test she provides, no transparency with your grades, and no curves. I like her as a person, but definitely not as a teacher.
Don't take this class. This is not just me but my smart ass Indian friends were also struggling in this class.
You definitely have to work 110% to get a good grade. I spent over $1,000 on private tutoring for this class, and I barely have a B. The homework load is not too heavy, however, her exams are extremely difficult. She provides sample tests for the exams, which helps a lot. Take this class if your willing to put in the effort to learn.
She's extremely nice and always asks for your understanding. Homework, textbook, and Chegg was your best friend. She gives you a study guide for each chapter, but it barely helps. For Math 31, there a no calculators allowed but will let you have an index card as a cheat sheet for each exam. It's possible to pass, but you'll most likely get a C.
She is a nice person but a horrible professor. She give easy examples in the classes and make you think that you can do it. However, her tests are a 100 times harder than the examples she gives. Most students scores were below 70. I worked hard for all her test and still failed her exams. She grade really hard and take points off for no reason.
Knows the content, just not a good professor. Can't necessarily explain it well. If you have her, you'd have to put in extra effort. I did fine and got an A. All these people are capping about it being impossible to get above a C or something. It's college, just put in extra time if you're stuck with her and you'll get a B and above.
Van der Poel is a nice person and really wants you to understand the material, but actually sucks at achieving that desire. She also has a t h i c c accent and has bad lectures. However, it's basically required you attend the lectures because she hands out extra credit and papers you need. Her class is only easy if you have a firm grasp on Calculus
She's not very clear with her grading corrections and her lectures are almost always behind the homework chapters making it difficult to keep up. Go to class frequently and don't procrastinate on homework.
I like her as a person and she is quite humorous. She wants us to succeed and tries to be understanding. Her tests are quite difficult and homework was mainly WebAssign. I recommend asking any questions during lectures and participate to do well.
350 characters is not nearly enough to fully describe this professor. She gave me 50% on a multiple choice quiz that I got all of the answers correct on because my work had minor omissions such as forgetting the sign. When courses went online, she refused to take the time required to give partial credit on tests making them much more difficult.
Her exams were pretty tough and she grades kinda hard. Calculus is already a pretty challenging subject and even though her teaching is alright, sometimes it's hard to understand what she's saying due to her accent. To get an A in her class I feel like you would have to be really good at Calc or you'll have a tough time.
Calc 2 was really hard. This professor is mediocre at best. Exams were difficult.
Does not teach the course. Get ready to learn on your own because she is just their to waste your time. Honestly cant believe she is allowed to be an instructor. Got an A but it was not because of her teaching it was in spite of her inability to. Stay away!
She does not convey information well, and has a hard time understanding questions and answering them. She puts topics on homework that she hasn't taught yet and has you turn it in before she teaches it. I ended up teaching myself a lot of this class.
I'm gonna go against the grain here and say that she was pretty amazing. I know she can be tough and is pretty rigid when it comes to the rules, but she cares about her students and wants them to succeed. She's extremely knowledgeable and will help you when you need it. Her lectures are pretty straight forward and she has worksheets that guide you.
This professor gives hard deadlines to online work with no opportunities to communicate with her. Her lectures online are difficult, confusing, and hard to understand. The tests are a lot harder than the actual study sheets. Her homework and quizzes introduce new topics that were not introduced in class yet, and they were always due an hour before.
Professor Van Der Pol's online zoom class for Math 71x is not worth it. Try to take a diff teacher if possible, her tests are harder than the study guides and study sheets. Her lectures are difficult to understand and there is nothing helpful if you miss class. There are generally pop quizzes in each class and she hardly offers extra credit.
Van Der Poel was very caring and nice in class, but the material covered in class was not very well matched with the homework given. There was absolutely zero transparency on grading, with little to no feedback on most things. The class is passable, but you definitely have to put in work. Majority of grade comes from the exams. Some extra credit.
She is the best math professor I have ever had and probably the best professor overall. She cares about what she is doing and wants you to learn the material. She has a great personality and is very friendly. She has difficulty understanding your questions when she asks, but she usually figures it out. Put in the effort and you'll get a good grade.
Terrible professor, skips way too many steps and her test grading requirements are ridiculous
Great professor, she is very caring and understanding.
Nice teacher who wants the best for her students. Sadly, her tests are very difficult compared to the HW problems assigned, and her lectures could have been more reflective of the exam content. Make use of all the HW/Quiz/Clicker credit that she provides and go to office hours. Generous curve given at the end.
Took it FA 2020. Practice exams were very similar to the actual exams, so do those a few times and you'll have a good feel for the exams. She offered a lot of extra credit through extra iClicker problems and other assignments. It's not an easy class, but it isn't impossible to do well.
DO NOT take van der poel if you're not a math major or a math genius. Lectures are OK at best, she's approachable and caring, but the tests are out of this world. No curve, grade averages are around 30/100, pretty much the whole class failed the tests except for 2 or 3 students. Don't take her unless you're ready to self study like crazy.
Her tests have a lot of questions but very little time. does not test your math ability . fat accent hard to understand. Lecture are stupid.
Thick accent which can be hard to understand at times. Tests are hard and most students don't do well but there's plenty of extra credit which boosted my grade from a B to a A-. Definitely better than the other MATH31 profs.
Calculus II is the hardest class I've ever taken, she does her best to teach but the difficulty across the homework, lectures, and tests is inconsistent. Best score on the midterms was a 63% and got a 55% on the final, but she gave a lot of extra credit opportunities that carried my grade to a C. Also has office hours/is approachable after class
Not a bad professor. She runs the course in a pretty straightforward lecture, homework, quiz format with 3 major tests. The tests are sometimes substantially harder than anything on quizzes or homework so studying outside class is a must. It's not a hard class so you can get an easy A by coming to class and following along with the notes.
Calc 2 is hard. I didn't personally like her teach style she tried to get people engaged but honestly felt boring, plus a heavy accent. Self study and practice is a must to pass understand the content. Exams were pretty fair and overall grading is clearly laid out. Good luck!
Very hard class but she teaches at a good pace and actually addresses students' concerns. Always go to class bc she goes over specific examples and gives insight on exams (Exam questions were still pretty tough compared to lecture examples tho). The class is curved so it is doable! Averaged 52% on all exams and still passed with a B-!
Professor Van Der Poel's class has very tedious and boring online lectures. She has a very heavy accent which can make it harder to understand, and skips steps. Regardless the material is rather easy. However for tests she grades extremely hard and is nitpicky. It almost seems like she tries to find every possible excuse to deduct points.
Professor went over core concepts and specific examples that may or may not be on the test. Tests are extremely difficult as I got scores of 57%, 52%, and 70% on all three midterms, and there is usually never enough time to complete them. Study outside of classes and prepare for tests, since they're 80% of your overall grade.
Does grade makes you do math to find out your own grade. Test make up most of the class. Doesn't provide a study guide for the exam. She just selects problems out of the book for you to practice. Should try and get out of this class if this is your teacher.
Don't take this professor. She never uploads your actual grades bc she makes you calculate it all yourself. She took attendance the two months that I showed up. Nice person but not a good teacher. I would also hear ppl complain about her in my other classes. 2 webassigns due every sat and tuesday for my class.
I respect her as a person, but not a professor. She was very unhelpful when it comes to teaching and grading. Her grading is super nit-picky and she takes points off the smallest things so they add up and unfortunately affect your overall test score. Her exams are tougher than any other professor as they are different than the department.
The midterms were extremely difficult and different to any of the HW or class problems. She doesn't give a proper study guide so it's really difficult to study. I averaged 68% on all the exams and still passed with a B- though. She drops your lowest test score and 5 lowest HW scores.
to be honest, all the calc 2 teachers at sjsu have the same curriculum, Van Der Poel is a no-second-chances type professor with lectures that are hard to understand unless you are familiar with her accent and even from my friends who are I have heard it is still just as boring and hard to make it through. it also takes her like 2-3 weeks to grade.
Unengaging lectures with heavy accent. Has a hard time understanding and being understood by students due to language barrier. Rude and unhelpful during office hours with her favorite phrase being "I don't care". Super nitpicky when grading, even more so than the graders on the final exam. Clearly doesn't care about students and grades slow.
Yeah no. Avoid at all cost and you're better off taking this class with another professor.
Worst professor ever - gives you a negative credit for ticking an option instead of circling it. Such a dum* professor, doesn't know how to teach or how to grade, doesn't even curve the grades. She should not be teaching anyone, she needs to learn herself first.
HORRIBLE. Can't teach and hard to reason with. Avoid her and get a better profesor.
AVOID. She is a horrible professor and her study guides aren't anything like what's on the exams.
She has the easiest tests of any other calc 2 teacher. And her lectures are slow placed. Just make sure you attend class and you will be ok.
AVOID! For tests, she doesn't even bother giving partial credit or feedback, all she does is put a bunch of question marks and X's over your paper even if you do parts of the question right. She will MAKE SURE that you get points removed when you don't write out every single little detail or miss writing random notations that you wrote already
Lectures are digestible and I did learn a lot. Try to participate in class. The midterms are difficult but not impossible, and she is very strict with grading them, but they prepare you for the final exam. She is nice and understanding, and her office hours do help.
Prof. Van Der Poel is very energetic and explains lectures well. She gives study guides where other math 31 profs don't, and will give a lot of hints as to what's on the test. Many low grades are dropped and the grade percentage is curved -- I think I finished with a 78% and passed with a B+. Just attend lecture and pay attention, and you'll pass.
She cared a lot about the class and had very clear lectures. Wants students to participate. No judgement and was very helpful during office hours. Gave us study guides for tests. I would definitely take her again. However I think she ignores any message with 'math' in it since her policy is no answering math questions outside of office hours.
Straightforward lectures based off of the textbook. Provided plenty of example problems, as well as study material for test preparation. Very approachable outside of class and is always encouraging students to ask for help during lectures. Also offers many extra credit opportunities, overall great teacher.
I was worried for a bit because of her reviews and didn't like the way she taught at the start but throughout the semester, I started to like her lectures and thought her way of teaching was neat and really organized which helped visualize things better. The grading system comes in handy since a 78 is like a B+ and drops lowest 4 quizzes and 5 HW.
She is caring but a bit heavy accents. However she gave plenty extra credits which helps boosting up the grade. Her test is heavy but do able. Work hard, you will pass!
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS, all these other comments are tripping. She is extremely difficult to understand especially with her heavy accent. If your only calculus 2 option is to take this class, I suggest finding another college to get this credit because she is not the way to go. She is nice, but her teachings do not even compare.
Her lectures are helpful and provides sample exams that match the difficulty of the midterms. she also replaces your lowerst midterm with the final if you do well. I will agree with others that she is a tough grader. I also dk why people complain about her accent, it really isnt that bad. Just study days prior to the exams and you'll be fine.
Her grading style on exams is horrendous. You can get the correct answer, but still get marked off points for not having the steps being exact copies to her answer sheet side by side. Throughout the course, more people failed because of her terrible grading than passed.
Grading is harsh and pushes for exact format as solved in class. Thick accent but manageable. Major issue: Stops for participation, often on easy parts, but speeding through difficult ones. Sometimes hard of hearing and needs things repeated 2-4 times. Sometimes dismissive of student contributions, seems discouraging to those who ask questions.
She's genuinely a sweet person but there is a social disconnect with how she explains and talks to us. I feel bad because she's trying to teach us and knows what she is doing but understanding from our point of view can be more difficult than it should be. Her practice exams are similar to her actual ones and all HW is due right before the test.
"ARE YOU OKAY?" "OK!"
Professor is fine at teaching the topics but spends so much time at the beginning of the semester doing useless review, leading to there being very little time to actually cover the topics of Calc2 while over a month of class is spent on review of Calc1. If you want to actually learn, I'd recommend taking a different professor. Work is pretty easy.
We are not ok. Bob the builder wouldn't be able to fix her.
Good person and very nice as a person, but as a teacher she was lowk really bad. You get maximum 1-2 partial points on tests out of like 6-8 or sometimes 15. Know what you're doing and go to office hours. But generally, DON'T TAKE CALC 2 AT SJSU IT'S TERRIBLE GO TO A COMMUNITY COLLEGE!!!
She is a great person and want you to do well. The homework and quizzes prepare you for the test. The practice tests are similar to the midterms and useful for studying. Your worst midterm grade is replaced by the grade you get for the final.
Just don't take this class.
she is a terrible grader and grades very dishonestly. She takes off points when you use any other convention outside of the one that she has written in her answer key, even if other textbooks solve the problem in such a way. It is obvious that she has a very superpicial understanding of the topics she is teaching by the way she grades.
Do not take this professor if you are unprepared to ace every question on the exams. Will mark you off for even the slightest mistake. Alergic to giving partial credit on wrong solutions with correct work. Got marked off a whole question for simply writing the factored-out answer in the box when told only to set it up, which was shown in the work.
Do not take this professor if you are not prepared to ace every single question on the exams. Allergic to giving partial credit to a wrong solution with correct work. Got marked off a whole question for simply putting the factored-out solution in the box instead of the setup, which was shown in the work. You can not make one mistake in your exams.
AVOID HER AT ALL COST!! She lowers your grade on purpose, there's no grade transparency. will mark you absent even if even 2 mins late. no extra credits and she's a very tough grader. you wont even know your grade till the end. WORST PROFESSOR EVER. ALSO SHE HAS THE WORST GRADING CRITERIA.
As a person she is very nice, but as a professor, she is like a play-in Klay . Not bad at lecturing, and you should always attend class if you really want to pass, since she does attendance checks. But when it comes to tests, expect something hard, and unexpected. Also she will take off a bunch of points for no reason. Glad I still passed!!!! :)
Professor Van Der Poel is overall a good professor. Her lectures are kind of hard to understand but if you consistently show up to class then you'll understand everything that will come on the midterms. Her exams are hard but if you do the weekly homework's and take-home quizzes then you should be fine. Go to office hours as they also help.
Honestly, not that bad of a professor. Quite understanding and tries to make sure everyone understands a topic/concept before moving on in her lectures. She'll hand out review sheets before a test and gives you extra credit if you fill it out and complete it. The questions on her test are mainly based off the review questions.
Constantly docked points for things that weren't technically incorrect. Get ready to study all of calc 2 on your own, because she is impossible to understand. By far the lowest grade I've ever gotten.
Vanderpol is super nice and always means well but she's an extremely tough grader. There's not enough time to solve the problems on her tests. Also, her lectures are not like the homework and the homework is not like the tests. I wish she would see this and try to improve on that front. I think it would be a great class if it weren't for that.
Although she is a decently good lecturer, the main issue is the practice material. For Math 39, we're given a blank review paper with fill in the blank review material that doesn't help, and the homework problems do not help you at all with studying. She is kind, however hard to follow at times. She means well, and gives a lot of ec oppurtunities.
Exams are very hard, and the exam reviews she gives out are just questions that you have to guess and fill out what exactly they are. Don't expect curving, tests are completely different from lecture material, but she does sometimes drop a question/give out extra credit.
Terrible, terrible teacher who has zero empathy for students. The exams were so difficult, and she gave so much homework. There was no review session for exams, and the sample paper she provided before the exams was basically useless.
Do not take this class for an easy A. Be prepared to do a lot of self studying. Every other review says the exams were difficult, but they are copy and paste questions from the worksheets done in class. Make sure to do all of the worksheets again before the exam and you will get a good score. Extra credit is basically worthless gradewise
Lectures are good, not mandatory after the first few weeks (though you get extra credit). Exams fairly straightforward but grading is strict. Graded out of 600 points, plus up to 20 extra credit points (3.33%) from attendance and activities. Seems to be an administrative person. Doesn't answer math questions via email, no emails after final, etc.
She gives you a list of topics that will show up on exams but does not review sessions and homeworks that are done online do not represent the type of questions to expect on the exams. She gives a decent amount of opportunity for extra credit which is honestly needed to pass the class. Lectures are ok but she'll do random attendance checks for EC
