I thought she was a very fair marker and tried to help us all understand more complex ideas in literature. Fun classes.

Dean may have her favorites but I found her extremely helpful outside of class. She gave me some excellent writing tips, her marking was fair and her lecture style is upbeat, diverse and intellectually stimulating.

While Dean seems unapproachable and harsh, she is good one on one- definately intellectaully stimulating and fair, though not easy

At first, I didn't like her. but once you approach her, she is very friendly, helpful and gives great advice. Her alleged "favourites" aren't favourites - they are the people who actually participate vocally in class (not me) She never tells you you're wrong, merely to take all issues into account.

She really knows how to make the readings interesting. The research project took a lot of time, but she marks it really easy.

An approachable instructor who writes helpful, clear and thorough comments on essays. She chooses great reading material and encourages discussion. Your essay writing will improve. She's a fair person.

great class, great prof. into the material, personable, funny, and knowledgable. has a great understanding of the material and is also open to new interpretations and students opinions. the lectures where stimulating and interesting and the selection of readings where entertaining and worth while. she's fabulous and the readings are worthwhile.

Misao Dean has been on of the most helpful teachers I've ever had at UVIC. She urges people to participate, loves good discussions, and is very personable. She goes out of her way to help with assignments and has a very strong knowledge of what she's teaching. The textbook for this class was amazing. I'll be taking more from her in the future.

Dr.Dean was my favourite professor EVER! I found her classes stimulating and challenging. I have never learned so much in my life. I HIGHLY recommend her. She expects a lot, but if you do do the readings, class is amazing. It took me until 4th year to find a teacher that motivated me to attend every single class. I didn't skip once!

To survive this class, DEFINITELY attend all the lectures, or else you're going to end up getting butchered in the final exam. I thought she was enthusiastic, and she clearly knew what she was teaching. For essays, it would be better to expand on topics covered in class rather than do your own thing.

Dr. Dean's lectures were interesting and her book choices were great. Attend all lecutres; if you skip, you're doomed. A fair prof, but an extremely hard marker.

Great! University is supposed to be a place for progressive, critical thinking people to engage with progressive, critical ideas. Doctor Dean offers a place to do that in her classroom.

I really enjoyed this class and her way of teaching. There are a lot of novels, but all great choices. She discusses them with the class in great length but with wonderful stories and explanations! She funny, respectful, and fair. She's a tough marker but with the amount learned from the class and remarks on your essays - it is a great choice!

Professor Dean is really passionate about what she does, and her classes are enjoyable and fun. She loves Canadian books and knows a lot about the context and history of the novels. The writing assignments are a bit too limited, but overall a good course.

Very clear on what is expected for each assignment. Gives good feedback on your papers. Seems like a tough grader but who knows it's the first (hopefully last) university English course I have taken. She is very smart, funny and inappropriate. The women has a strong personality and is very passionate about teaching. She makes you work hard.

I didn't really want to take this course, and it was hard. But I feel like I needed it to learn to write university essays, and I appreciate how much work she put into it.

I had to take this course for education but I ended up really loving it.

Dr. Dean is my favourite prof at UVic. Her classes never disappointment me. They have made me change the way in which I see the world. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND TAKING ANY COURSE WITH HER.

Really encourages critical thinking, be prepared to debate! Brought to mind many angles and perspectives I hadn't considered before. Dean is very approachable and shows a lot of interest in student's individual projects and ideas.

Well, she's not based on bull, I guarantee that. However, she's assertive by default, and arguing feels difficult if you can't levy a similarly large counterargument against her.P She does suck at compressing her points, though, because the interview that started the shenanigans didn't even represent her own arguments in ENGL 448.

Look out, we have a hot tamale alert! Hot off the grill, she is comin' at ya and she is going to change the world. She is patient, and generally cares about her students! Hurrah!

Straight-up awesome prof.

Some of the texts assigned were super boring, but Dr. Dean's discussion of them in class actually managed to make me interested in the material. She's a very clear, concise lecturer. You can't skip class, as the test material covers what's talked about in the lectures. If you do the readings and pay attention, you'll walk away with a good grade.

Probably the chillest ENG teacher currently out there! Very anecdotal so get ready to know everything about her. Enjoyed classes so I actually did the reading. It was my last class of the day and it was honestly my time to relax a bit, felt like hanging out almost.

Dr. Dean is GREAT. makes effort to engage with & get to know her students personally, respects/values student voices&overall clearly just really likes what she does. Her lectures are fun and engaging. Lectures don't give you the answers or exactly what to know, but is a foundation to explore what you are interested in. guideddependent learning

I really liked Dr. Dean as a person but not so much as a professor. The assigned reading was very dry and the quizzes required memorization of the most minor details from the books. She was clearly happy to be there and passionate about the topic which made the class more enjoyable, but I still would not take it again if I redid the semester.

Absolutely wonderful woman! Grades involve quizes on the readings (which are fairly easy if you read them and attended lectures), 2 papers and final exam. Dean is so caring and lets you makeup quiz grades if you fail. Very hellpful in her office hours too, if you talk to her about the book before the quiz she'll let you know what to study. 10/10

Dr. Dean is truly an inspiration. She's kind, articulate, and always up for class discussion. This is a well-structured course, and she is a fairif not, generousgrader. I am so glad I took this course and can't wait to take more of her courses in the future.

Third course with this prof.

Dr. Dean made the boring readings interesting with her lectures. Her quizzes were all based on the specific reading content, but she offers make-up assignments if your memory isn't the best. I also liked how she asked the class what we wanted / needed help with, and what we wanted to focus on learning.

She was fantastic. The lectures were interesting, she was engaging, and while the course certainly goes through a lot of books she paced them out well. She was encouraging of new ideas from students and respectful of input from any students who had personal insight to the cultures we discussed. Great course.

Friendly and inspiring. Quizzes are easy if you go to class.

Dr. Dean's brightspace page was easy to read. She gave us questions to prepare for class discussion and the discussion classes were great. Better go to class tho, because otherwise you won't get good marks on the quizzes.

Good, really popular course.

I think if you are a conservative you shouldn't necessarily sign up for a course on one of Canada's most famous feminists. Dr. Dean explains Atwood's ideas really clearly, and also tells you which ones she disagrees with as well as agrees with.

I really enjoyed the Atwood class with Dr.Dean. She is a bit disorganized when it comes to due dates and quizzes, and I can see why some people might not enjoy her lecture style. That being said, she is brilliant and very funny. I found her marking to be very easy. The course consisted of 5 short (500 word) essays, a final, and quizzes.
