Nice person but a very bad teacher! He cannot teach and seems unprepared.
You will learn the material, just wont get a good grade.
Very unlucky class
Would not recommend this class. I would rather have my teeth removed without painkillers than sit through this course again.
good teacher and very nice
THIS TEACHER IS UNPREPARED FOR CLASS.
This is calc 2, it's not a simple topic at all. However, he does understand the material very well and is always there to answer questions and clarifies during class. I like him much better than who I had for calc 1.
Good teacher, good lectures. Friendly and easy. His way of presenting the materials was very engaging and interesting. Even now I still remember all details about series, and all the limit tests... Incredible!
he is very engaging with his students and takes the time to answer tedious questions that his students ask. but! he is a tough teacher. he taught this Math 30 class like everyone was going on to Calc 2.
Very hard teacher. too much homework, too much quizes
im now taking math 285 and so far from high school i got one B and one D and rest of them are all A's..... He is the one who gave me D...
Teaches this subject very well; he understands what he is talking about. Recommended.
good teacher, lost of homework(due every monday), kisses sometimes after lecturing some sections. tests are from the book(chapter tests). pretty easy if u know what you are doing.
Difficult to understand. Has very heavy accent. Her long hair appears not to hvae been washed in weeks. Good points. Always willing to answer any questions. Very Helpful!!
Before i start critiquing negative comments, i would like to say.. hes a GREAT TEACHER..VERY HELPFUL! Its math come on now.. how fun can get it right?.. Besides that.. damn he gives alot of hw! Make sure you know some calculus before entering the course becuase if you dont, then you have a hard time
he is sooo bad!! he made me feel stupid for asking a question! never take him!!
I love math I have been soo good at math all my life he is BY FAR the worst teacher i have ever had EVER. He spends half the semester on the easy stuff then speeds through the more difficult stuff. Don't ever take this teacher unless you want to be completly confused.
for calc 180: He gives a ton of homework, but its good if you have time to do it all because his tests are straight from the assignments he gives and its good practice you NEED for the tests. He is quite humorous and teaches very slow unlike most of the calc teachers. I am glad i had him for calc. :-)
He lectures so slow that sometimes makes me fall in sleep. He tries his best to make you understand. A ton of homwork( 2 sections a day,one section is usually from 1-61).His exams are depended on his mood.First and final are so easy but, the rest are killers. Many of the test questions are from homework, but which ones in the thousands?Recomended !
Good teacher in all.
he is a complete jerk
He's a straight forward instructor. Wants students to understand material. Teaches at a steady pace, not fast at all. You have to enjoy math to like him. adds in jokes to keep attention. recommended. i don't know what the others are talking about Alves being a jerk or too boring. they must not like math. anyway, a helpful instructor and knows what he's doing.
alves is a really boring teacher. he goes through material and teaches them in ways you wouldnt understand because he doesnt explain them thoroughly. in class quizes are real easy, if youre paying attention in class. the tests are hard and so can the online quizes and hw. i thought his class was a waste of time. DONT TAKE IT
...teaches calculus like he's remembering it.
HE IS THE WORST TEACHER I HAVE TAKEN IN MY ENTIRE LIFE!! I am on the third week of class and he is giving a test on the entire book without teaching ANYTHING! He jumps all over the book for hw and does not explain anything. I am dropping and am pissed. I wish I would have known about this site before taking this waste of a teacher. DON'T TAKE HIM!
Alves is not a good teacher at all. He's dull, boring, and teaches calculus in ways that make it dificult to understand. He has a weird way of interacting with the students (almost as if he feels he's smarter than everyone and he's above everyone). By all means, do not take his class.
oh yeah i remember alves. he's an SASS*. NOt easy even though he constantly brings up the fact that most are taking math 30 to get it over with. Attnd is no factor, but quizzes are! U mess those up and you might as well call it quits. Calc teachrs should not teach lower Math w/ an attitude like his
He IS a hard teacher, but is very patient and helpful with all his students. Five 100pt tests and one 200pt test make up your grade. No curve.
Very clear teacher. Hard test. Lots of homework. He apends time making sure everyone is good to go before he moves on. He is also very good at breaking things down from another angle if you don't get it the first time.
great teacher. very clear and easy to understand. keep up on the homework assignments when they are assigned and you will do fine. i wish i had him for all of my math classes.
Seems like an OK teacher, not easy but not too hard either. His explainations are pretty decent. Tests were just homework problems. Hard part is just doing your homework when it is assigned and keeping up with the class.
I like math. I dont like Alves. I've never in my life seen a teacher make more stupid errors while trying to teach a class. "Rumor has it" that his sense of humor is extremely lame. I had to point out something he was doing wrong at least once a week, just to keep myself awake. Easily one of my most frustrating math classes, even getting an A.
he's a very fair teacher. He explains it clearly and if you don't get it, he's willing to assist you. Once in a while, he makes some mistakes. But hey, calculus requires a lot of showing work. Even when I redid the problems, I made the same mistake. The key to getting an A in his class is doing and re-doing the hw problems.
worst teacher ever. dont take him
I love business, but real estate is very hard. My favorite is residential property
This is the only math classes in the series of calculus that i can't get an A. Why? He doesn't give you a second change. I got 89....%, But have to be exactly 90% to get A. I did homework twice, practice exams many times, read the book, and solid A in the final and A+ in the first exam, got B and C in next two exams. Still end up with an B++. Pain!
Too much homework. Full credit or nothing on the exams. Very heavy accent. Difficult to understand in class. Suggest you take someone else.
His tests were real hard. its basically all or nothing. i e mailed him for help and he never got back to me. i felt like his class really brought out the worst in any math skills i had, which arent great. he doesnt really seem like he cares about the students doing good.
Alves is a mellow, funny, and patient teacher. He's all about helping the students understand math. He's not as thorough as Livingston was, but I would still recommend him for anyone looking for a good Math 30 teacher. He's very friendly and doesn't make you feel stupid.
Tests are terribly hard! Moves wayyyy tooo fast! I got 2 tutors, never missed a day of class, worked my butt off..and he failed me. I would NOT recommend him at all!
He was my stats teacher. At first I thought he was kind of mean, but then he was nice towards the end of the semester. I'm kind of glad he was strict in the beginning because he weeded out all the slackers and our class became a close-knit group of friends rather than classmates. Keep up with the work and you're golden!
His class is boring. Homework is ridiculous. The tests are the hardest things ever! He was my first D that i ever got in a math class. Absolutely ridiculous!
Very nice teacher and a great human being. He teaches with dedication. He can be witty and clever at times. His tests are similar to the homework. Very fun guy. You are warned though, the material in this class is very hard and you will need alot of time doing the homework. Otherwise, this class will be fun. plus he talks about current events alot
As was said before a great human being and a gentleman as well. The class is hard and you need to ask if you don't understand, but he'll always help. For exams he gave us always the whole class period which is over two hours. I got As in both his MATH 180 & 185 though I had to work my ass off for them, but hey - it's CALCULUS!
THE WORST MATH TEACHER EVER!!!Although I'll admit he knows Math very well, the problem is he doesn't know HOW TO TEACH it!!!!! Boring lectures, lame sense of humour, too much homework, hard tests. If you ask for help or need a better explanation, he doesn't help you understand and points you to the math lab. DON'T TAKE HIM!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This guy rules. Pay attention, ask questions. Do the homework. Most of the tests are multiple choice used from the book. Sit in front and tell the kids straight from high school to keep their mouths shut
Definitely a great teacher and person! I was dreading taking math again but after having him for Math 10 I knew I would take his class for Math 30. He's always willing to help out and clarify things. You can't go wrong on the tests if you do the homework and do the practice tests from the book or math lab. Highly recommend him!
Decent guy. No surprises on tests-pretty fair teacher. Somewhat funny. Fairly lax, I got away with acting up a bit. Would take again. Even though I'm good at math, I got a B but it's my own fault for slacking off - I did NO homework at all. Also homework while supposedly mandatory isn't(told us at end of semester), all tests. Would take again
Funny and sarcastic.
Good teacher. He explains things well and is very helpful if you ask questions. His tests are basically homework problems so make sure you do your homework, although it isn't mandatory. Doesn't grade on a curve, but he still isn't really that hard, it's just that Cal is a hard subject for most. Highly recommend.
I dropped before the deadline. Enrolled in Koines' Math 180 class and passed it easily. Try it!
I am stunned to see anything negative posted in regards to Mitchell. Thanks to him and his different tactics in teaching, I understand a higher level of math fully for the first time in my life. He is great and has a brilliant personality. I pray that I can have him for my next round in math.
Great guy. Tests are a combination of hw/quizzes. Believe me this guy is on your side! Just come to class having read some material at least! You have to do all/most the hw prior to the test or you will struggle. Its not mandatory but you have to learn it to be successful. Math is tough ppl!
Extremely difficult class, his quiz's are at random so you can't even take a breather he had one both class meetings one time! Wouldn't recommend for someone that isn't good at math or finds it difficult to understand
this is an all right teacher.UMmm his test questions come out of the homework. SO doing your homework and gettign the right answer will help you do well on the test
Hard teacher for a hard subject. Doesn't click with me. He is useless, the class is a self-teaching class.
It's a tough class. Tons of homework is assigned and he expects you to give in 10 hours a week to study. But he explains the material very well. Overall, you won't get the easy grade you want but you'll learn the material.
terrible teaching. lame sense of humor. tests are hard and based on only 10 questions each. book used is poorly written. best learning it by yourself from another source.
You have to memorize alot. If you do most of the homework and understand it you can pull off a B. The test might not seem straightforward but they are made up from hw questions, i mean thats as straightforward you can get. He's a great teacher idc who says otherwise. It's just a tough class that you have to focus alot in.
I don't know why Alves gets such bad ratings, he teaches math like a university professor would, there is a lot of homework and outside effort that needs to be put into this class if you want to get an A,as long as you just do the homework, read each section prior to doing the homework, and review his notes, there is no reason why u shudnt get a an A
enjoyed his class. he likes students and talks a lot of jokes though i didnt find them funny. u can get an A if u keep the work, such as reading the text or doing homework. however, u need to give some time to do all of those. the exams are mainly based on the notes of the lecture, so dont miss the class.
His tests are very hard.He gave all or nothing test, and there are some random questions which you never thing about.I worked hard and I got a C. You will not survive all the tests with an A or B
He is hard grader! He looks so goofy and all of our classmates didn't like his sleepy voice. He doesn't have a sense of humor. His exams are extreamly hard no joke!! Just remember that he is HARD GRADER~~~!!
Very hard grader and kinda makes you feel stupid when you ask questions. He seems to cater to those who get it really easy. Office hours help, but very very difficult class.
Really good teacher, made everything click. I mean I'm a nerd, but i know a great teacher when I see one. He also doesn't grade on attendance, so if i wanted to sleep in i could. I was kinda pissed he gave me a B though!
I think he was a nice teacher but don't let that fool you he's a hard grader. He likes to point people out to see if you are getting the lecture. There is a final that you is from the whole semester isn't so hard though. Get used to loving math problems and waste 20 pages of paper. Take him if you need a math class finite math.
Great guy, reasonable. Homework assigned everyday, (just like all math classes), you get partial credit for tests, and the final is half multiple choice, half written.
He gives A LOT of homework, A LOT! However, if you do all the homework, show up to class, and do ALL the chapter reviews & tests, you will get an A. Frustrated w/ amount of homework, but in the end, it is what helped me get an A, so do it and understand it! Also, if you ask, he will help!
I took him a few semesters ago. It was the only class I ever got below a C. His teaching style is alright but the lectures are too easy, compared to the exam questions or HW. He offers office hours, which is helpful. His exams are difficult and you need to keep up, in order to pass the random quizzes. Final's ridiculous &dropped most students' grade
This class was easy. As long as you do the homework and attend class everyday, you will do fine. The tests are really easy. They consist of questions from homework or examples from his lecture and examples from the book. The only thing that sucks about him is that he assigns lots of homework, his pop quizzes and he takes forever to grade test.
I'm an average student I had a 3.0 for my high school GPA. He is a nice teacher. Good guy but Calculus is a hard subject no matter what. Tests are hard there's only about 6 questions. If you don't buy textbook you have no chance. You can NOT fall behind in this class. Best way to study is to do homework which is given daily :(.
Alves is a good teacher. I hate the pop quizzes. When he notices that you are copying the homework out of the solutions manual he will embarrass you. DO the homework. It is a lot, but it's worth it. THe first two tests were very easy after that they got pretty difficult.
DO NOT TAKE HIM! If you do, make sure you have ALOT of previous experience in Calc. He NEVER gives back your tests. His tests are ridiculously hard. Comes up with questions on his own. I wasted a semester of my life trying to pass his class a second time around and I still got an F. I hate it and my GPA is messed up because of it. DO NOT TAKE!
I had him for Cal 1&2. One of the greatest profs. His tests were straight forward. Do all the homework. Do the review section, HW problems and examples before the tests. You'll get at least a B. Listen carefully to his lectures and show him your respect. As long as you do that, he won't give you pop quizzes.
Alves takes his time to explains things well, but also picks extremely hard questions which I wouldn't mind if we had more time (only 75 mins). Only returned 2 tests the whole semester so you don't know what you have until 2 weeks after finals. If you're going into higher math, pick alves b/c he will prepare you. Bio students go else where.
An very easy going, friendly and fair professor. Jaded sense of humor. Tolerates inane student chatter, creating an unwelcome "high school" atmosphere. Those seeking a truly knowledgeable instructor beware: his grasp of higher math and science is weak. Overall, an uninspiring mechanic who shows no real knowledge of or enthusiasm for mathematics.
Alves is a very good teacher and is very fair with his tests. Just make sure that you do your job and study, so that he could do his. In my opinion, he is the best math teacher at OCC.
He takes too many quizzes but never give them back, neither quizzes nor tests. The final exam is just base on final answer if your final answer so if you make a minor mistake u loose point... however he madke 100000of mistakes during the class... He can teach some part very well, but I'm sure he didn't understand some other parts so he can not teac
He's very good teacher. Explain concepts clear, does not get mad at anyone just because they ask some supposed-to-know question (such as how to add two rational numers?). Quizzes and exams are easy. He makes calculus not intimidating at all. Just pay attention in class and do chapter review and you will get a solid A in his class.
First of all, this is my second time taking calculus since high school. He likes to introduce each topic with theory behind the lesson. Very sarcastic. He is knowledgeable and helpful if you don't understand. His test are 10 questions but they are usually from chapter review from the book. This class is easy if you actually put an effort.
Alves is the man. He's a good teacher and a cool guy. If you study the chapter reviews and keep up then you will be fine. He's happy to answer questions and help, and he's got a sense of humor. Likes sports too. recommended
A very good professor. His exams are not hard if you do the homework after each class and do some problem in the chapter review before the exam. He's very thoughtful. He never take off many points if you have a wrong answer in the exam if you show him that you understand the material and just have a mistake in calculating. Best Math professor!
Excellent professor! Alves made Calculus II easy to understand. Starts every section with the derivation of whatever formula or theorem you'll utilize in your homework. Explanations are clear. He's very nice and is helpful if your stuck on a problem.
Mr. Alves is a positive person. He enjoys what he does and explains things clearly. However, he does not have enough time in class to go over all questions you may have on homework. Going to office hours/tutoring center is a must for this class. What can I say Calculus takes time and effort no matter what teacher you take.
Im taking the online class Math30 in CCC with this prof. BIG MISTAKE.He makes the class very difficult. You basically have to study the complete book. He didn't give us a study guide. He's late with test results.Everybody was making complaints in the discussion board, but he doesn't care.I highly recommend you to find another professor.
Took the in class math30 class. The quizzes are more than 25 questions but worth the same percentage as the homework and the tests have the same amount of questions as the quizzes. So hard to get an A in this class. Students complain constantly on the the discussion boards and he is VERY slow at posting grades.TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR.
Hard because the high level of information that you have to work on. Tons of homeworks.Quizes are very dificult. Two midterm in campus. He didn't give study guide. It was very hard, but he gave study guide for final. GREAT. It was really helpful. If you need help, you can go to his office and he will help you. Very nice person
The class itself is not bad. But the professor; there are concerns. For one, hmk/quizzes which are at times over 25 questions are only 10% of your grade. But the kicker is he requires participation in the discussion board which I did occasionally but he gave me a 0 on that. Dropped my grade 4 percentage points. Don't take this professor, my advice.
Take his class with caution. Homework/quizzes are long and worth very little. No study guide given and must show all steps on exams
Great teacher! -at CCC
Professor Alves is an AMAZING professor. He really takes the time to ensure that all his students understand the lessons. He will keep going over problems in the lesson until it was clear for everyone to understand. Class is not too hard, but you have to make the effort to study do the homework. If you need help, he will be there to help you.
If Math is not ur best subject don't take it online in a 8 week summer session. Online class is on my math lab course it was alot of work & to many Quizzes & 2 test on campus plus on final. Teacher is very helpful & answers back quickly, he was very helpful made sure students understood & explained in detail all answers. Great teacher overall.
Homework OVERLOAD assigns un-necessary amounts of homework for no points. Has 4 test that are huge percent of grade, tests are on 3 chapters of material or about a month of class time. Nearly impossible to go that long and retain info. No study guides are given for the Test class instruction is all over the place not structured well at all. AVOID!
Very Rude. Very Sarcastic This was just within a couple of days of starting my online math course. I dropped this course immediately!
do not take this professor unless you want an absent professor who doesn't respond to emails or even grade his own assignments. he uses "grade scope" and you cant discuss your grade with him. he doesn't respond to emails. he never keeps your grades up to date. half a semester in and I don't know my grade. absolutely horrible class.
