This was his first time teaching the class here, so he had to tweak the class a little, and the class was too easy at first because he wasn't sure how the curve needed to be, but overall Dudley's a super nice person and always ready to help students when they ask for it, and he goes beyond what's necessary to make himself accessible. Great class!
This was his first year teaching the class and for being at U of M. That considering, he did a great job. Knew the content well and presented in an enthusiastic way. He is a fun guy.
Dudley is awesome! He's a nice and approachable professor who is willing to take out time to meet with students who can't go to his office hours. He goes a little slow, which can sometimes make lecture dull, but it helps drive in the concepts. Exams are pretty easy too
He's a very good teacher. Lecture is not mandatory per-say but the slides he puts up on ctools are not complete and you need to fill in blanks during class. It is hard to study for this class because he never gives out the answers for homework so it's hard to tell if you're actually doing problems correctly. He does however teach material very well
Dudley is the man! The class policy kinda sucks in the way that the entire class grade is based upon 3 mid-term exams, and the lectures are at 830 am. He is a very clear lecturer, however, and always has suitable examples to suit the theory he is teaching. He makes himself very free outside of lecture, and hosts review sessions. Follows textbook.
Easily the most boring class I've taken at UM. Boring topic and Dudley makes no attempt to engage students.
The class was interesting but tests were tricky at times, since the class was based off three exams, it was annoying. At times because you had no other ways to boost your grades. Class average was a C+ so don't think this is an easy class. The biggest problem with this course is the lack of problem sets or practice hw.
Stay away, for some reason he enjoys tricking the class and overall class could be much better but as long as he makes similar tests, you won't have fun. He will curve class average to a C+ but Average in the class was low so i would go for others.
Very CLEAR syllabus. Class grade = 3 exams. The book and his corresponding slides and handouts ) are what makes up the exams. There are really no surprises tbh what's on the exams and not very complex math. Book is very clear. He does not post completed slides and his class being at 8:30 is a drag to go to sometimes. Liked no HW. Hard to get a C...
Really great guy! Despite some dry lectures, the exams are easy if you study from the book. His office hours are disorganized a little but he means well. He even gave me a letter of rec. Really good prof to cultivate a relationship with.
That Southern way he talks and the way he walks; I think he should be called Professor Studley! :)
I really liked him and his class. His lectures are good. Only a few times did they seem ridiculously long and boring. He is really into the topic and enthusiastic. Always ready to help when I went to office hours. Tests are hard, but not if you study. Class avg was around a B+.
Amazing professor- very clear and straight forward. You need to read the textbook, though. If you don't, you won't do well. His tests are hard. Most people I know don't do well. If you put in a lot of time and work hard, you will do well. Summary: great teacherprofessor, hard exams. You need to study and put in work. Hard to get an A- or higher.
Need to pay attention to ppt. They have things that deviate from the textbook. His lectures some time can get somewhat long only because he's trying to explain things very thoroughly
Shamelessly steals all slides from the book. Over explains the most simple concepts and spends 20 min at the start of every class on worthless information. After the second exam, in which most of the class preformed poorly, he spent 30min lecturing the class about how they didn't try hard enough instead of admitting his teaching and exam was flawed
Terrible Lecturer, more like high school quality. Did not provide enough study materials for exams. Would not recommend.
HARD EXAMS! After our second exam the professor spent time explaining to the class that the students obviously did not study hard enough even though as a whole we all agreed that the exam was too hard. He ended up having to curve the class after the final since the average was low on the final as well.
Do not listen to any of the highly negative ratings below... anyone hating on this class is hating because they're stupid and didn't study, slacked off and in turn, did poorly in the class. Dudley is a great man and super nice. He is a great lecturer and very straightforward. he responds to all emails. if you study, you WILL do well on exams.....
Lectures: Summaries of textbook content w own explanations. He's a strong speaker; funny...? Exams: Difficult to prepare for; few old exams as reference. Memorization alone will probably get you C (Q's a bit tricky; he had to curve). Must understand concepts thoroughly; don't assume too far! OH: Willing towill help! HW: Q's - effort grade.
Dudley made ECON 102 fairly interesting. 90% of the grading of the class is based on 3 significantly tough tests, so you really need to understand the material to succeed. However, Dudley is always willing to help. Read the book, study, and do the homework, and you'll be okay.
Can be loquacious, really cares about his students and knows the material incredibly well, and pretty clear at presenting it, too. Found the first exam okay, and the latter two more difficult -- did well on the first two but bombed the third, still walked out with an A. Only went to OH once but would have again. He's a good prof and a good person.
Dudley is a funny guy & he keeps his lectures interesting. His area of study is environmental econ, so he often incorporates this into lectures. If you're not interested in that area, though, it's not overwhelming. Overall, he lectures well and his examples are helpful to understanding the material. You need to read test questions very carefully.
Dudley has never taught 101 before, this being his first year. I thought the tests were extremely reasonable, i know my friends who took professors like Gerson had much harder tests. If you study there is no reason you cant get an A or A-
Easy class. Very clear. He makes himself available to students. There is no curve, but the exams are easy enough. You need to take ECON 101 anyway, he is probably your best bet! However, the GSI's and the discussion sections were about the least helpful thing ever.
Professor Dudley is the best professor I have ever had! He makes the lectures very interesting and enjoyable--which is hard to do in a room full of freshmen trying to get into Ross! He is really fair and a great person overall, as he really puts a lot of effort into trying to allow his students to do well.
Dudley is probably the best Econ 101 prof at umich. He can be loquacious in lecture, but does a really good job of explaining the material. The tests aren't that hard and I enjoyed taking his class. You don't have to attend discussion either you can just turn in the homework and leave.
I don't get people's complaints about Dudley. He is a great lecturer and makes the material incredibly clear. Yeah the humor might be too much sometimes but it doesn't hurt the overall quality of the course. His homeworks and exams are really easy. GSIs play a minor part in grading.
Professor Dudley understands how an economics class should be taught. The Tests are extremely fair, not necessarily easy, you still need to study hard. He is always ready to help. Dudley is a funny guy that has relatively enjoyable lectures. I'm recommending him to all of my friends and recommend him to anyone that asked for a good professor.
Dudley tries to make microeconomics as interesting as it can be. He is a self proclaimed "Econ Nerd" and makes a ton of corny jokes. It's clear he knows his stuff, but he sometimes gets a little off topic and lectures are boring. I probably learned more from the book than from lecture. Didn't curve because our "grades were where he wanted them"
While many think he's a decent professor, I found him to do a poor job of teaching the material. Even after seeking his help a few times, his advice was to just read the book more in depth. Lectures were became useless, and his teaching style was drawn on and boring, with a touch of arrogance. UM should be able to get a better ECON 102 professor.
Great professor for Econ 101. He is amazing at explaining key concepts and breaking them down. He also is eager to meet in person and interact with students. His class was very organized and you always know what to expect.
Very clear in presenting the material in class. Used the book only for homework problems last minute studying chapter summaries. There is a homework assignment each week graded on completion which helps your grade a lot, instead of pop quizzes like other teachers. Tests were easy and straight up. 50 multiple choice instead of 30 like others.
His lectures were incredibly boring as he speaks monotonously. But my biggest pet peeve was that he would just try to throw in so many trick questions in his exams. I did manage to get an A in the class but I learned most of it from my textbook and GSI. It definitely is Much harder than Econ 101 though but still very doable if you work hard.
I don't understand how anyone can hate on Professor Dudley. If you visit him in office hours even once, he is so friendly and genuine and clearly wants to take time to help you. Just in lecture alone you can see he's a cool guy who loves to teach and interact with students (although i will agree he does ramble sometimes)
Mitchell Dudley is really smart and inspiring. This environmental economics class makes me think a lot and is useful in terms of real-world applications. I especially like the second part of the class which is policy-based. I have learned a ton about Kyoto Protocol and other environmental policies and understood how it functioned, which is cool
Dudley makes Econ 101 seem easy but he makes the tests incredibly hard to take. If I had one piece of advice for people considering taking Econ, don't take Dudley. He's incredibly narsosostic and thinks he's way smarter than he is. I wish I would've never taken his class
I thought Dudley did a great job teaching the material for econ 101 and making it seem simple and relatively easy, until the test. There were many trick questions and the topics were much more complex than what we covered in class. While he's a cool guy and really passionate about econ, I regret taking this class with him.
Dr. Dudley is a straight up awesome professor. He is a great man to talk to in office hours, even if it's not about Econ. His lectures are good not great but the class is extremely fair. You know exactly what will be on the exam, and his lectures help you prepare very well. Teaches mostly from the book, but going to lectures still helps.
Compared to the other Econ 101 teacher this semester, I would say he's much easier and clear in his instruction. I've heard another econ teacher is very vague, abstract, and gives hard tests. None of this is true for Dr. Dudley. He also tries to liven up the class with jokes (which doesn't always work) but A for effort.
Very good professor. There is no way to make Econ 101 easy, but he does a good job making it as easy as can be. The tests are very similar to practice tests and he slows down to match the pace of the students. He is really nice and helpful in office hours and the homework is for completion. No cumulative final
Professor Dudley makes Econ 101 simple to understand and learn. His lectures are straight forward and never boring, and he answers every student's question as the class moves along. His tests are straight forward and fair. I hope he teaches the other Econ classes I take in the future. I would strongly encourage students to take his class.
This class was definitely not as awful as I imagined Econ to be. Definitely go to lectures and take good notes because a lot of the exam questions come from making sure you can understand his lecture slides. He explains content very thoroughly with plenty of examples, and he handles questions very well. Also the homework is based on completion.
Dr. Dudley has been by far my favorite lecturer at the University of Michigan. His lectures present the material in a clear and understandable way, and the GSIs go more in depth during discussion. He's really helpful in office ours. There's a few tricky questions on the exams, but he gives plenty of practice ones so you kind of know what to expect.
Dudley is a great lecturer and he makes the material as easy to understand as it can be. He gives a lot of examples and is very clear in his explanations. Show up to lecture, take good notes, and study for the exams and you'll be perfectly fine. I thought his tests were very fair and I would love to take another class with him in the future.
Dudley makes econ 101 as simple and straightforward as it can be. His lectures, while sometimes repetitive, cover exactly what will be on the test in a way that makes sense. He was willing to meet outside of office hours to go over a concept, and the meeting was very helpful. I would recommend Dudley to anyone planning to take 101.
Horrible professor that does not care about the students. Makes the exams very difficult and is not easy to follow during lecture.
Dr. Dudley isn't the worst but he's definitely not perfect. Tests were unpredictably and very different from practice exams. He does a pretty good job at making his lectures interesting but his examples drag on. Be ready for lots of food analogies!
Econ 101 is not very difficult, and Dudley is great at keeping it that way. His lectures help make somewhat boring material interesting, and he has a knack for connecting with students (often by using extended food analogies or personal example). Attending lecture probably isn't necessary provided you read the book, but it's certainly helpful.
Dr. Dudley genuinely seems to care about his students' learning (which is unusual for econ, tbh). He sometimes spent too much time on the easy concepts and rushed through the more complicated ideas, but overall good lecturer.
Dudley is a good lecturer but exams can be a little tough! Lectures follow the textbook pretty much so you'll be fine just reading that. I did that towards the end anyway.
Dr. Dudley makes Econ understandable to everyone, which is a skill many econ lecturers lack. His tests are straight forward and fair for the most part. The GSI's are very helpful, and both the GSI's and Dr. Dudley are available to students who require help.
Great professor, very clear-cut and straightforward. As good an econ lecturer as I can imagine there being. Exams were slightly harder than last semesters exams, so it was sometimes slightly difficult to prepare for exams. However, he makes Econ 101 very fair. It can be difficult at times, but overall its a great class and not too bad
Mitchell Dudley is a class act. He's enthusiastic about teaching and you get the feeling that he'd do anything to help you out if you needed it. That being said the class was really easy so you probably won't need any help. Go to lecture if you want to learn because he's legitimately a good lecturer, and funny in a dad joke kind of way.
Dudley is an awesome professor and brings his A game to every lecture. You can tell that he really cares about his students and answers all questions with clarity. He keeps his lectures interesting with cheesy dad-jokes. If you put forth effort, you will do well in this course.
He was one of the most self-absorbed teachers I have ever had. Class was not bad lectures were okay but he always spent more time talking about himself. He shows that he loves the subject but really gives off the impression that he wants a certain number of As and Bs and not that he wants all of us to succeed. If you like econ, don't take his class
Dudley is a great teacher who definitely loves what he does, and it shows. However, the class was definitely not an easy A. I messed up on one exam which made it extremely hard to pull my grade up. Test questions aren't necessarily hard but can trick you. The class is good though, Dudley is better than the other Econ 101 teachers for sure.
The only problem with Professor Dudley is that he can go on tangents that end up over-explaining things or going in depth with explaining unimportant things. However, this is just because he is very passionate about the topic, so as long as you focus on the important parts you'll be fine. His textbook is great and if you study hard you'll be fine.
I took environmental econ class with him. He try to be clear when he explains the concept. Willing to be helpful to students during office hour. As long as you study hard before the exam, going to his office hour when you have anything uncertain, you will do fine. There's only three exams no homework.
Did well in this class solely because of my GSI Obeid Rehman. Dudley will teach you the general concepts but the textbook (really well written, actually) and discussion section will prepare you for the exam.
Dudley is one of the best professors I have had. He was fair, would only introduce a curve when it helped students, and kept to the traditional 3 graded tests. His tests are all multiple choice (50 questions) and most questions tested 1 concept. The questions looked familiar from class. He was very approachable and friendly, and made lecture fun!
Dudley's a great professor if you go to lecture with the intention of at least trying to comprehend the material. My discussion section wasn't the least bit helpful, but it was required you attend (ON TIME - VERY IMPORTANT) to turn in the homework. The class is heavily based off of three exams, but they are rather easy if you know the material.
Don't get the hype. Reads off powerpoint. Questions were so much harder than practice problems but there's no exposure to harder questions so you're screwed. We had major cheating scandals so it was a crazy unorganized, dramatic semester but if you have to take econ I guess since all profs aren't the best so Dudley's fine.
Good teacher with engaging lectures, but can get off on tangents time to time. Exams are multiple choice and worded pretty tricky. Def need to read the textbook and do practice problems to do well on the exam.
Don't bother attending the class. Mitchell is going to waste your time. Plus, he is one of the worst professor I have ever signed up for.
He's a great guy and is always very helpful in office hours. The tests are difficult, but if you study very hard and know the CONCEPTS very well then you will be fine
Note: I took AP Micro in high school I found the lectures very over-descriptive and boring, good if you are bad at econ. Ended up not going to half. Homework takes 1-2 hrs a week, and u don't need to read the textbook. Dudley seems like a good guy, but I never went to office hours. You only need to go to discussion to turn in homework then leave
Dudley is a good professor. His lectures are good although sometimes boring and he explains things pretty well. If you have no econ experience, definitely put some time into this class. Tests are okay if you read the book, do the homework and discussion activities. I screwed up big time on the first test and I had to work my tail off later on.
Excellent teacher and excellent human being. Any professor that genuinely cares about the mental health of their students gets my respect. In addition, the course he taught was interesting and engaging material. He has a passion for his students and for what he teaches, and exams were clear and understandable. Can't ask for much more from a prof.
Dudley could possible be the best econ professor at Michigan. Hes funny and lectures fly by because he engages with students. Great guy and professor. Easy class and exams were clear, be sure not to cheat on exams though, he failed a handful of kids in our class that he caught. Also theres is no homework for this class, just exams.
Professor Dudley is an incredibly sincere and caring person. He makes all of his past exams and lecture slides available online to students. Tests are fair provided you understand the material. I would be happy take a class with him again.
Good overall teacher, reading the notes will get you a B, and going to class will push you over the edge. He is good at lecturing and is really helpful when you have a question whether its during class or at office hours. Solid teacher, tests are slightly more difficult than the material in the notes so that is why you should go to class.
A great professor who makes lecture interesting and fun. Will be honest, if you do the practice exams you don't need to go to class.
Dudley is a great guy and can be funny in a "dad" kind of way. He tends to ramble in lecture, and the GSIs for the most part are not helpful. He changed the format of the class so there's open ended on the exams. Do practice exams and practice problems, you should be good.
Dudley is a really good professor. He is very excited about Econ and his lectures are really good. For 101, the grading is fair. You take 4 exams but can drop 1 of 3 and write 5 short papers.
The lecture and discussions are very concept based however, when you get to the exams it is all math problems. The lectures are not helpful.
Lecture is pointless he just reads off the slides and rambles. You'e better off just reading the book. The assignments have barely any correlation to the exams so they don't help, and from my experience and my friends' the GSIs don't really care of want to be there. Literally just wait for a spot in Caldwell's class.
Lecture with Dudley was not helpful in the slightest as he just read off the slides and would end up stuck on one small detail for 30 minutes. As others have said he recently changed the format of the class, and the new essays have nothing to do with exams. Tests are way harder than problems done in class and often are worded to trip you up. Pass.
I was shocked to see he only had a 4 on here. His enthusiasm for economics is contagious, explanations of concepts are really insightful, and his expectations more than reasonable. The tests are also straightforward and overall the workload was very light compared to other 4 credit classes. I have solidified economics as a major because of Dudley.
Dudley is one of the best professors I've had at the University of Michigan. He is super enthusiastic about economics and wants his students to succeed. Tests are fair; he does not test anything not covered in lecture. Workload was light, but you learn a lot. He is also generous enough to offer extra credit; 55% of the class got an A this semester!
He is the only teacher I've ever had that actually makes me excited to learn economics (weird, right?). Not only does he make the class as easy as possible, but I would marry him if he wasn't already married.
- posts lectures online - class is straight forward. Materials are all in the text book - 3 midterms (lowest is dropped) 1 final - relatively easy course as long as you put in the effort
Great Professor!Makes learning Econ fun! The class is well-rounded and Dudley genuinely cares about students succeeding.
I loved Dudley!! I honestly don't know why everything thinks Caldwell is the best - Dudley is just as great in my opinion. He is fun and interesting to listen to, and he's passionate about econ. Tests were much harder than lectures though (lots of application and math I didn't expect before I saw the first exam) so go to office hours/discussion.
Dudley is a good choice for your econ professor. He does not assign any homework besides 5 400-500 word essays that are peer reviewed before submission. My only criticism is his tests are a lot harder than his lectures. The tests are a lot of math so you have to go to your discussions to learn how to do it. Besides the tests it was very easy.
Dr. Dudley is a great choice for any economics classes. His lectures are clear and he is great at answering any questions. He also gives great real-life examples to make sure you understand the material. Exams were not difficult because there were many sources to prepare well. Take econ 101 with Dudley.
Genuinely cares about his students. Him and Professor Adams were easily my favorites in the department. Made the regrettable mistake of going to my GSI's office hours instead of his.
Dudley's a really nice guy and probably the easiest Econ 101 professor. His class is very manageable if you either go to class or watch the online recordings of class, but a bit difficult if you don't do that. The textbook isn't necessary, but it can help. He also drops your lowest test grade, which helps a ton.
I'm writing this to recommend Econ 370 class! One of the best professors! His lectures are clear and interesting. But I hope he gives more questions in the exam, because each question worth too much! So if you make a mistake, it affects a lot. It's basically whether you don't make a mistake or not.
Awesome professor, accessible and fair grading system
Would not have made it through Econ 101 if Dudley had not been my professor. Super detailed yet entertaining lectures. Very respectable professor who genuinely cares about his students. Grading system is fair.
I enjoyed Dudley's class. He is a good professor, especially because this topic is really his speciality. My only complaint is that sometimes lectures were just boring.
Professor Dudley makes the concepts interesting, but his Econ 101 course is not quantitative enough to properly prepare students for Econ 401. The only homework assignments are papers which are then peer-reviewed, and they don't require much quantitative analysis. But he does make himself available to students and his lectures are quite humorous.
Not too bad of a class but he's definitely made it harder than last semester from what I've heard. His lectures are good and helpful but discussion section is where you actually learn how to do the stuff that'll be tested on. Tests are much more quantitative than lectures. Read the textbook, it helps
Dudley's teaching style is very laid back, but he is an effective communicator of the material needed. He is also very helpful in office hours, and has a good sense of humor. For Econ 101, he is a solid choice
Dudley is a really nice guy who seems to really care about his students. He loves Econ and tries to show us the real-world significance of Econ every lecture. The tests aren't bad at all. Attendance isn't mandatory because he posts all lectures to Canvas. Reading the textbook isn't necessary either. Great guy. 2nd best 101 professor behind Caldwell
Dudley is a super humble guy, which really shines through in his lectures. His passion for economics is infectious. You have to work and really know the material to get an A, but it can be done. In case the entire class does poorly (the average grade on each exam was a C), he adds a curve so 35% of the class gets As and 75% get an A or B.
Hes a very nice guy who is super passionate about Econ. I really liked this class even though it required more studying than I thought. He is super friendly and very accessible out of class. I wish I had him for Econ 101 instead of the professor that I had. I would definitely recommend taking any class with him.
Dr. Dudley is a great prof with a lot of love for Econ. Although his explanations are sometimes a bit circuitous, he is happy to answer any questions and usually picks up on the issue the student was having immediately. Would recommend!
Dr. Dudley is a solid choice for a Principles prof. Only complaint is that he doesn't have very conceptually intuitive explanations for tougher concepts in Macro, but then, what professor does? He's very available outside class and will answer all your questions.
Dr. Dudley as a person is really nice and he takes the time to answer questions thoroughly, but the lectures feel pretty dry sometimes and there are not a lot of assignments in the class so there's more pressure to do well on every single paper and test.
Great lecturer. Explains things very clearly and uses lots of examples (sometimes too much). Lectures can sometimes get boring, but useful in a lot of times. Lectures are recorded, no unannounced quizzes / participation points, so attendance isn't mandatory. Writing assignments are relatively easy and short.
Great Professor
Great class, great teaching process, very helpful with any difficulties you may have. Exams weren't too difficult, just study the lecture material well. Somewhat relaxed class environment, but pay attention!
Great teacher! Explained things very clearly, and I learned a lot. I started off reading the book and then realized that just paying attention in lecture and attending discussion would get me through. Didn't read a single page the rest of the semester. Exams were pretty fair and anything that wasn't, got taken off.
Okay, so here's the deal. I absolutely suck at Economics in general, but Dudley made Econ 101 that much less painful. I think with any other Econ professor I would legitimately have failed the class, but Dudley took the time to explain things in lecture and always answered students' questions. Also, don't sleep on the discussion sections.
Dr. Dudley was a solid choice for ECON 101. I struggle with economics in general but was able to pull through in Dudley's class. The tests were fair and the writing assignments were a good grade booster. And he drops your lowest test grade which is so helpful. His lectures were thorough and easy to understand.
Dudley was a great dude. His class was pretty easy. The first two tests everyone did well on, class averages were high B's. The third test slaughtered everyone but he drops your lowest score which includes the final. You also had three papers where you went further in depth on concepts. Every lecture was recorded. Would recommend.
He spends way too much time talking about his personal life (and the "connections" they have to the material) but overall his lectures were as interesting as possible for an economics class. The grading system is great and it's really easy to get help or feedback from the GSI's/writing fellow's/him.
This might be one of the worst classes I have ever taken at Michigan. Beware of the hype because you will regret taking this course with Professor dudley. To start out with Professor dudleys lectures are extremely dumbed down and not helpful for tests. GSI is not even fluent in English and makes no sense. You are graded by 19 year olds. Avoid.
He's one of the most caring Econ professors at UM!
Decent lecturer. Tests are weird and difficult. Practice essays are not helpful at all. You'll have 30% of the grades graded by 20 year-olds. Would not recommend.
Good lecturer, I relied on his explanations and examples a lot. Classes are recorded so you can watch them online after. Papers were annoying to have but not too difficult. Exams were pretty straightforward and not too hard.
Dudley gets off topic/talks too much during lectures. Stopped going to lecture so I could fast forward through the nonsense. Lecture and discussion are both optional. I did decently well in this class for not trying, so that is a positive. However, writing assignments are graded harshly by "fellows" who are just undergrads. Exams are moderate.
Dr. Dudley makes the lectures interesting and does a really good job providing examples connecting economics to our daily lives. When studying for exams, make sure to take advantage of the practice tests posted on canvas.
Dr. Dudley is an alright instructor. He does spend a lot of class time talking about himself instead of focusing on the material. Overall, I thought the course was ok.
He is a decent lecturer, tests aren't bad, and writing assignments (assuming you put in effort) are a good grade booster. The only reason I gave him this rating is that the lectures and examples are so simplified and dumbed down that they are almost useless for studying. Also GSI'S don't speak good English at all, so do not rely on them for help.
Very caring & replies email fast. A good lecturer as well, probably one of the best Econ 101 professor at Umich.
Very nice guy! You can teach yourself 101 with textbook, and the old tests he posts on Canvas are helpful. MWrite essays are beyond useless, graded by undergrads, and there is a major issue of inconsistency amongst them. Not the worst for 101, but not the best.
Dr. Dudley is a fine lecturer and explains complex concepts very well, but he goes off tangent so frequently it sometimes detracts from the material and causes him to fall behind schedule. Tests are fair, but the writing fellows for the written assignments are hit or miss in terms of grading. Put some effort into this class and you should do fine.
Solid lectures. Incredibly accessible outside of classes. All round great guy.
Professor Dudley was one of the least understanding professors this semester. He was incredibly tough on grading and didn't take into account all the issues that were affecting students. He gave all open-ended questions for all of his quizzes with a small amount of time. If you're taking Econ 101, I'd recommend taking it with Zamzow for sure.
Asynchronous lecture videos were extremely clear. Grading criteria and expectations clearly laid out before the term starts. Excellent professor.
All the lectures were recorded and available to watch on Canvas. Each section had a nongraded mini-quiz to test your knowledge during lecture. He made sure his lectures were clearly understood and that he was approachable for OH or general questions. Would definitely recommend Prof. Dudley, I imagine the in-person version would be be even better.
Dr. Dudley was great this semester - very clear and very open if you had any questions. I wasn't the biggest fan of having 7 quizzes instead of three midterms, but some people really liked it. I would just note the quizzes are much more challenging than the practice materials - if you participate and do a through job on the papers you will be fine
I really enjoyed this Econ 101 class. For the Fall 2020 semester, he chose to do 7 quizzes, all worth 60 points, and would automatically drop your lowest 2 quiz grades. We did not meet for class other than 1 discussion section per week with a GSI, but he had office hours at least 2x a week. His lectures were long but manageable, and well explained.
Dudley himself was a really great professor and explained Econ 101 really well. But the 7 quizzes that made up the class were unreasonably difficult, and the 1 hour time limit only made things even more difficult. The questions were all short answer and were unlike any of the practice problems he gave. Really struggled with the quizzes in the class
Professor Dudley was a great Econ 101 professor. He explained the material very well, and it was very possible to do well on quizzes and papers throughout the semester. It is not a blowoff class, however, and people have to stay engaged in the class in order to keep a high average. If you are focused and organized, it should be very easy.
I enjoyed Professor Dudley's ECON 101 class! His Canvas page was extremely well-organized, and everything necessary for success was always right in front of us. His lectures were long, but they were spaced out with questions to check your understanding in-between. He seemed like a great guy and was always enthusiastic in his videos!
Dr. Dudley has been one of the best professors I've had so far at Umich! His lectures are super entertaining, and is always willing to answer questions before, during, and after class. The structure also sets him apart from the other Econ 101 professors, as 5 quizzes (dropping the lowest one) and 3 short essays, really reduces stress about grades.
I personally feel that Dr. Dudley does not care enough about his students and his quizzes do not reflect the material that is taught in class. Additionally, I think he gives minimal room to get partial credit on quizzes and is not understanding when one tries to explain themselves. I have never felt so lost in a class and would not recommend it.
I can't recommend Dr. Dudley enough! He is an incredible lecturer and explains everything in multiple different ways to make sure all of the content is clear. The quizzes and writing assignments are pretty straight forward. Easy to get an A as long as you pay close attention in lecture.
super easy teacher. just pay attention in lecture and get an A. not interesting at all, though.
Dudley's lectures are pretty funny but still boring, I stopped showing up halfway through the sem and just watched them online. Definitely watch it tho, all the content on quizzes will be covered. The class is graded through 5 quizzes (lowest mark dropped) and 3 writing assignments, but there's enough resources to help you do well if you try.
Prof is fine, but my goodness the quizzes/assignments are AWFUL. Plenty of extremely ambiguous questions that you won't get credit for if you aren't on the same mental wavelength as him (even if you're also right). Quizzes are terrible--getting 2 MC questions wrong puts you at a B b/c there's no partial credit, I've genuinely never seen worse.
Top, top professor - exceptional at explaining concepts. Yes, there isn't a lot of opportunity to get partial credit on quizzes but he's also not out to get his students. Study concepts and read questions carefully and you will do fine. Definitely recommend taking econ 101 with him.
Dudley is one of the best professors I've ever had. He gives clear lectures, relates lecture material to real-world examples, and responds to emails quickly. The class is out of 500 possible points, & a breakdown can be found in Canvas so you can always know how many points you have or can still gain so calculating your grade is super easy.
Really interesting lecturer and explains everything in a VERY clear way with lots of examples! If you watch/go to all of the lectures and practice the quizzes and worksheets, you'll be totally fine. One tip would be to watch the lectures online and put it in 1.5x speed, he talks a little slow so it really helps to focus on the faster speed.
Dudley has been teaching Econ 101 for a long time. His lectures are entertaining and informative. As a person, Dudley can be fairly arrogant but is available outside of class to help. I would lean more heavily on your GSI for help on assignments.
Great lecturer - very easy to pay attention to. Also he doesn't assign much homework. However, tests are very hard.
Clearly loves what he does, talks to students before class. Class load is pretty high, 3 essays 5 exams, graded on very little outside of those 8 things. keeps your attention in lectures for sure.
Prof. Dudley is very passionate about what he does! I really appreciate his grading structure (3 500-word essays and 5 quizzes, no exams), which made it easier for me to learn and reflect on the key concepts. As long as you consistently show up for lectures/discussions and study a little, you will walk away w/ a good grade.
Take Econ 101 with Dr. Dudley!! We did not have tests, only quizzes and which are fair (also no final exam). There is no HW in the class besides 3 small-ish writing assignments that people overall do really well on. If you pay attention in lecture and do the practice quizzes/discussion WS you will succeed in this class! Pretty low workload overall
Dudley is a great lecturer, very enthusiastic, explains material clearly.
Very clear class guidelines and structure. Lectures can be sometimes a little bit boring, but he clearly cares a lot about Economics. He's also very accessible, and an Econ major advisor if you need more information.
I strongly believe Dudley is the best professor for Econ 101. I was a big fan of how he used quizzes instead of tests and you get to drop the lowest quiz grade. His lectures were very engaging and helpful. He also is easy to talk to...go to his office hours!
Dr. Dudley is a great teacher. He prepared for classes very well. Course content are relatively easy to understand. He is also very responsible after class. When I sent him an email asking about something, he would reply very quickly. The only thing I don't like is the quizzes, which is 60% of the grade. These quizzes are difficult. Be prepared!
Dr. Dudley is a really nice and passionate professor. For Econ 370, he taught a lot without any slides, and would write during lecture on Microsoft OneNote which could make class a little slow. Class is solely exam-based, but they weren't super hard and he provides practice materials. The units of pollution economics and climate change were great.
Not a good professor.
Dr. Dudley is very passionate about the subject he's teaching but his lecture can get bored sometimes. But if you gonna take ECON101 take it w him. The class has 3 short easy essays and 5 quizzes no final and you can drop 1 quiz. Make sure you take the past quizzes and past homework to get ready for the quiz as some problems can be rlly tricky.
Dr. Dudley is great if you are interested in the subject and keeps class engaging by providing lots of examples. Personally math/science isn't my strong suit, so I found this class more difficult that my classmates. If you are like me, focus on getting high scores for the 3 writing assignments, that will really boost your grade.
best econ professor at umich
A large portion of the class is writing assignments that 1). Do not teach you anything and 2). Punish you for going more in-depth than basic economic concepts. I averaged a 99% on the exams; however, ended up with an A- because of the fact that I got a significant amount of points taken off on peer review and writing assignments.
This professors downside was the fact he spoke very very slow
Dudley was a good econ professor but class is made up of 3 writing assignments-->writing fellows who grade them are so inconsistent so you never really know what grade youre getting. there are 5 quizzes and you can drop the lowest which is good. the quizzes are difficult though so you have to go to lectures, do practice worksheets, redo quizzes
Econ 370 was one of my easier classes work-wise although our entire grade was based on 3 exams. These exams are just like the notes he gives in class and the past exams, so if you watch the lectures and take notes, you will be fine. He is a super nice guy, just talks really slow.
Prof. Dudley is extremely passionate about the stuff he teaches and you can tell he loves to teach. He's a great lecturer, the exams were straightforward and the workload is really low. However don't take this class if you're not a good tester, 100% of the grade is exams. Overall CANT RECOMMEND ENOUGH!!!
Prof. Dudley runs an incredibly organized and effective ECON101 section. This section is by far the best, as the only grades are 6 quizzes (one dropped) and 3 essays. Dudley uses intuitive examples and his lectures are very interesting (great for 1.5x speed). When I was wrongfully flagged by the chatGPT detector, he was quick to apologize.
Great professor. Engaging lectures, reasonable assignments, learned a lot.
WOW! TAKE DUDLEY. He is by far the best prof at UMICH. He cares for his students and explains everything beautifully. I wish he taught econ 102! I loved his teaching style so much!
Do not take, avoid this class/professor!!! The class format is difficult, the 5 trickly quizzes and pointless writing assignments never give you a break in this class. I found the writing fellows to be inconsistent in grading and other econ101 classes do not have the same heavy workload as this one. Nice guy tho!
Dudley is a very good instructor for 101. His lectures are engaging for those who don't know econ, but for the people who have taken AP or IB micro the class will feel like a complete rehash and may be a bit boring. The class is really easy, and Dudley cares a lot about students, his office hours are quite entertaining.
His quizzes are made so that no amount of studying or other review methods will improve your chances of getting a higher grade. The practice guides appear helpful but the quizzes are nothing like it. He believes it is normal for students to fail their first and second quiz instead of changing and adapting his teaching style to raise these grades.
Dudley is a good prof and explained complicated topics relatively well. Only graded work is 3 writing assignments, which are a little tedious but not too bad, and 5 quizzes, the lowest of which is dropped. Quizzes are hard though so be sure to study beforehand.
Dr. Dudley's lectures are clear, effective, and engaging. His exams are highly application-based, so make sure you fully understand the material, not just memorize it. Your lowest exam out of 5 is dropped. Go to lecture and discussion and you will be well set. This is THE class if you want to gain a strong comprehension of basic microeconomics.
Best econ professor/class by far: no HW other than writing assignments and studying for quizzes. Quizzes are not bad if you prepare with the content given. Only thing is he is VERY stringent on grades and deadlines. If you miss something you're basically cooked.
Dr. Dudley is a good choice for 101. Your grade is made up of 5 quizzes and 3 writing assignments, other than that there is no homework. Old quizzes are provided as study tools which are helpful and each writing assignment includes a first draft where you're given useful feedback.
Lecturer Dudley was nice but strict. He was kind in OH but showed a lot of attitude in teaching so many students. Your grade consists of 500 points, 300 from 5 quizzes, and most of the rest from writings. The quizzes were challenging, with limited partial credit, and writing grades were very subjective. He's fine, but take Caldwell if you can.
lectures were good, but the writing assignments are very dependent on subjective opinions from GSIs, which lost me many points alongside the very broad/unclear rubrics
Dr. Dudley was a great lecturer. However, I found the grading for the writing assignments to be inconsistent and unfair, especially since an 80% was "meeting his expectations." If you wanted an A on the paper, you had to "exceed expectations," which I found frustrating. These writing assignments are worth a large chunk of your grade so be prepared.
Lectures were most of information and if you go its great. He is accepting of most things, however, he is test and paper heavy. Lectures were boring and he would go on tangents on one concept and would speed through the rest which made the lectures not worth going to. I would take a different professor.
Everything you need to know is learned in discussion. The exams are fair, but easy to fail since each question is 2-6 points, so missing one could drop your grade by a letter. Your grade also mostly depends on the GSIs that grade your writing assignment, since some are harsher than others. I did fine, but I also felt unsupported in the class.
Overall an easy class that suffered from a lack of homework. There is not much review material, lecture recordings expire after 48 hours, and textbooks often don't align with lecture, making exams hard to study for. Lecture was fine, office hours are helpful, but the entire grade was reliant on 3 exams with multiple trick questions each.
His voice is so incredibly annoying I nearly wanted to fail the class because I couldn't bear listening to it. So so annoying.
Dudley's Econ 101 class is extremely frustrating. Basically your entire grade depends on just five exams, and each question is worth a huge portion of your grade, making them very easy to fail. The exams are much harder than anything covered in class or practice materials. He's a nice guy, but I don't recommend this course.
He's a fine lecturer but goes off topic once in a while which I found frustrating with trying to learn. The writing assignments honestly were good for learning the concepts but the way they graded is that they expect more from you than what the rubric asks. I would definitely not take this class again if I had to do the writing assignments again.
He was nice, but often went on rants during class. There were no midterms or finals. Rather, there were 5 non-cumulative quizzes. Each one got harder and harder each quiz. There were 3 writing assignments, but there was first draft, peer review, and final draft for each assignment. Other than these assignments, no homework.
The material, classes, and discussions teach concepts well, but don't take the class with dudley. He makes exams and the questions dont match any kind of practice exams or questions or homework assignments. The gsis do more for you than dudley. Take caldwell or anyone else and you'll probably fair better in applying concepts.
I mostly had trouble with the content and not with Dr. Dudley. I just wish that there were more assignments besides the papers and quizzes he gave us. He ended up making two assignments to help people get their grades up, so I wish he had done that from the start. Lectures are a bit boring, but he is kind, respectful, and tries to engage students.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS WITH DUDLEY!!!! It is not his usual teaching assignment, and he made it clear to us day one that he would not be taking our class seriously. Expected to memorize long lists of random words for the three exams that made up final grade. No practice work given ever, so no homework, but also no non-lecture way to learn content.
The content in the quizzes was way harder than what was covered in lecture and my GSI was not very helpful. His papers are also very difficult as you have to include a massive amount of information in a very small word count.
he made me hate econ somehow
Quizzes often contain material that he does not teach you. Lectures are boring and often contain more confusing than useful information as he overexplains simple principles of economics. There is some slack in that if your GSI is good, the class experience probably could be better.
This class is very easy, the tests and papers are easy, I don't know what others are talking about on here. Dudley seems like a nice guy, he is helpful. Lectures are slow, and sometimes feature strange tangents, but if you go to every lecture, you should have no problem getting an A or B in the class. Textbook readings are not necessary.
He is a really nice and funny professor. While he often goes on tangents during his lectures, he manages to explain the material pretty well. Although the five mandatory quizzes can be a pain, if you put in the effort and go to his office hours you should be able to get at least a B on all of them.
He gives extra credit, which is nice. Papers are graded by writing fellows, so it all depends on that. The tests can be hard and don't offer much partial credit, which I found frustrating. I like his lectures, though. It was a good pace to keep notes, and he gave helpful, real-life examples that solidified the conceptual topics for me.
Not my favorite... Lectures were never engaging and I found his teaching style hard to follow. Exams were not impossible, but definitely not easy. He has very high expectations for his students and can be really persnickety. Just always kind of doing too much. Discussion sections are optional as well, which is nice.
If you've taken AP Econ you'll do fine in this class. Lectures are just soooooo boring. Professor Dudley is a very nice guy, and you can tell he's passionate about econ. I just don't think he's the best teacher.
The 5 quiz format is wayyy more difficult than the other econ 101 classes and I can't be convinced otherwise. Content is much more difficult on quizzes than what is gone over in the lectures and discussions. He will try to trick you on the quizzes. Writing fellows grade everything and will take points off whenever possible. I enjoyed his dialogues.
He is a very nice guy and good lecturer. Went to his office hours a couple times and he was very helpful and eager to teach. The material is not hard but you're only graded on quizzes and essays, so you have no buffer if you don't understand or do poorly.
Dr. Dudley was a great Econ 101 professor! He is very enthusiastic about the subject and his lectures are pretty engaging. If you do all of the practice quizzes and make an effort to understand everything in each unit, you should be fine getting an A. I also thought the textbook was very helpful in increasing my understanding of the topic.
He changed the grade distribution at the last second. THE VERY LAST SECOND. AVOID AT ALL COSTS IF YOU CARE ABOUT YOUR GPA EVEN SLIGHTLY. Assignments are much tougher than all other teachers, and expectations are obviously unclear. The feedback received is very vague and misleading on all other assignments.
Decent guy, lectures can be boring at times. 5 quizzes, 3 short papers. The papers can be confusing at times, but the quizzes are easy. He gives out extra credit when necessary. Changed grade distribution at the very end, which could screw some people over.
Solid Econ professor. Lectures were good, but would delete the recordings after 2 days so you couldn't watch them later. I'm a little confused why he'd add extra credit if he was just going to shift the grade distribution at the very end anyways. Makes the points redundant cause they were for completion lmao. Cool guy though
He starts the beginning of the year saying you get a curve. This curve HURTS YOUR GRADE. I had a 92 which got curved down to a B+.
If you miss anything, no makeups, your done and cooked. Curve at the end can hurt people who worked hard and help people who didn't. Overall a weeder class with a stuck up professor.
He curved me from A to A- :(((((((((((((((((
Professor Dudley was great! Loved his lectures and quizzes weren't too bad.
He is an okay teacher. Textbooks weren't required, but it helped more than his lectures did. His office hours help as well. His graders for the writing assignments were really bad. You could follow the rubric completely and still get points off. His tests aren't super hard, but if you get some wrong that have a bunch of points, you're screwed.
He rambled on in lecture a lot and assigned a lot of work. He offers extra credit several times. Overall he's an okay professor, but with all that he offers for grading, if you put in the effort you can easily get an A.
