I love him!!
I really like this class, interesting topics! He's a very good prof, always available to answer questions, fun class!
Cool class, it gets very boring at times especially at 9 A.M. Easy class though, and hes a good teacher, just a little dull.
Very hard to pay attention to/get anything out of the class at 9am. Interesting topics, but must easier to learn if you just go over the powerpoints (he posts all the lectures online) by yourself. Don't waste your money on the book, you won't need it. Fairly easy class
The class is interesting, and Mitch is a good teacher, but it's a little hard for me to pay attention because it's at 9am and I am not a morning person.
Mitch is the epitome of the word BAUSS.
DO NOT BUY BOOKS. never opened them. going to class is POINTLESS. i went to every class it didn't help. he read straight off the slides. HWs are easy. tests are tricky. basically you have to memorize every lecture cause you won't know whats gonna be asked. lectures online.
The tests are pretty easy, but you have to go to every class, otherwise you'll miss subtle points that he'll ask on tests. The slides he posts online are helpful, but only if you're going to class too. Don't bother buying the books, you should just find information online if you don't get something.
VERY interesting class. I learned so much! I would definetly recomend it to everyone! There's not really a need to buy the book, b/c the slides have all the info you will need for the exams, which aren't too bad, but you need to study for them. Hope the review helps...
DON'T BOTHER BUYING THE BOOKS! i never used them. its a really interesting class but he just read off the slides and asked really hard test questions irrelevent to the information we learned.
Awesome teacher! Very helpful and got his point across clearly. Exams reflected the notes. Didn't need the book because he explained everything well enough in c lass. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS! Microbio 160 (Bio of cancer and aids)
microbe 160 was a terrible decision. DON'T TAKE IT! they changed the class and it is not easy like everyone was saying. the tests are ridiculous, he puts questions on there that should not be asked in a gen ed class. also the homework's he assigns are not useful and are tedious
Somewhat interesting class. Professor is prepared for class and seems to know material fairly well. That being said they tests are WAY too hard for a gen-ed class. An incredible amount of information is thrown at you every class and you are expected to know literally every single piece of it for the test. The homework is too personal and tedious.
The real problem with the class is if you don't go at best you can hope for is 85 (because he puts question on that aren't really covered in the lecture slides). On the other hand while you're in the class it's so boring that you can feel yourself decomposing.
Probably the most boring class I've ever taken in my entire life and I like science. Not a bad BS gen ed though the class is pretty easy.
I have no idea why people are saying this is an easy class. I just checked the class distribution. 4 - 6 people out of the ~180 people in the class got an A (94 or above). The median for the class was a C, which is the grade more than half the class received). Save yourself the trouble, stay away. Take an easier gen-ed that has a better scale.
Probably one of the worst professors I've had. Disorganized, terrible slides, and by his exams DO NOT correlate at all to the depth covered in lecture. Took this class to gain insight in the field and complete my gen-ed requirement. Ended up studying for this class more than my upper level chemistry courses. TAKE WITH A DIFFERENT PROF.
"Mitch is the epitome of the word BAUSS." Love his humor. He's Polish too, which explains it.
One of the worst classes I've taken. He babbles and gets too off topic. Needs to explain his slides better
I took this class because people told me it was one of the easier gen ed requirements. Not totally the case, but not a bad class. Definitely have to study for the tests and it does help to go to class because he helps explain lecture slides in everyday terms. I really like the class but wouldn't reccomend it for an easy A. Have to put in work.
Professor was extremely hard to follow and all over the place during lecture. Slides are confusing and no help! I attended every lecture, even though he was no help at all, and needed to read all the chapters prior to an exam. He covers material in a great amount of depth and then asks basic (but horribly worded) questions on the exams!
Love him as a person, but his teaching is a too fast for me.
SO HOT! I LOVE HIM but he teaches way to fast and expects you to understand very quickly. Very interesting class and informative but not clear enough and slides are difficult to understand.. not considered an easy gen ed.
Not worth buying the book. He expects you to catch on. The class is very informative but is too much for a gen ed.
Just an overall wonderful person, approachable, humorous, interesting. He is very tolerant of kids who don't have any prior experience and he teaches the class to people who may not be interested in pursuing microbiology but are interested in having a firm, fundamental of its concepts. This class is a great way to make yourself more well rounded.
Great professor. He teaches a really heavy topic but keeps it very interesting and holds attention well, but moves very fast. He is very in touch with the students that he teaches. The class is a little difficult but there are only 3 tests with an optional final. The man is full of information and is really informative in class.
No way that everything could be covered in microbio310. Walkowicz knows this and tries to make it as broad as possible so that in the end, students will walk out learning something. He needs help in organization, but is overall a great professor and is willing to help students succeed.
Mitchell is awesome. He knows his material and he teaches it very well. I feel like I learned a lot from his class, and I got a few laughs out of the occasional jokes that he made. Take this class. It's easy and you learn a lot of relevant information to two major problems facing today's society
Awful professor. So disorganized and all over the place. He would rush review sessions and not show up to meetings or office hours. He is a nice guy and means well but he doesn't know how to post quizzes or grades on moodle and is unclear when explaining things. The class wasn't too hard and as long as you study you will be fine.
Decent professor nice guy, attending lecture is optional and is probably not necessary overall. Just make sure to read the book. The exams are just one big vocab quiz (so make sure to use the book website) as long as you know the terms you'll have an A.
Great person but not so great professor. Goes over lectures VERY fast; gave up taking notes in class & would take them from the slides at home after. Recommend reading book to review the info covered in lectures bc there is so much. Tests were tough, but mainly only bc there's so much info. Attendance not mandatory but there's always a few
questions on the tests that are only discussed in class. There are 2 projects that can up grade.
Always willing to help and answer questions. Really generous with extra credit points at the end. However, course material is tough, and exams cover small details. Sometimes wording on exam is confusing. Must go over lecture slides with the book for clarification. Do not cram for exams last minute.
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS IF YOU ARE NOT A SCIENCE MAJOR. He is a really nice guy and always willing to work with you. However for non science majors this class is really difficult. I had hall A's prior to taking his class and ended up in the C+? B- range in this class which wrecked my GPA.
Nice guy, easy enough class, although exams can be a bit tricky. Not many people went to class; I'm guessing that has something to do with some of the complaints.
Mitch is awesome. The tests are really easy as long as you study his previous tests. I went to class but I never really paid attention. He was good at what he taught I just wasn't really interested in the material. Overall it was a good Gen Ed
He is a super nice guy. Homework is extremely easy and light (roughly 3 a semester). The lectures are very fast paced. The exams are pretty straight forward. Attendence is optional.
Mitch is a down to earth guy who teaches very well. He is interested in the subject and cares about his students. Fairly easy Gen Ed and I recommend it. You will need to study a little to do well.
I loved this class & Mitch. Great guy, down to earth, straight to the point. He'll intimidate you on the first day of class but he grows on you. Very passionate about the subject & sharing it in an understandable way. I left this class having learned A LOT. Exams aren't too bad either, and the optional final was a breeze - definitely take it.
I didn't receive the best grade but I found this class to be very interesting and I'm glad I took it. I find it to be more on the difficult side, especially for a Gen Ed. I couldn't keep up with him, especially when he got into all the details. My advice is to make sure you do all the written assignments. Forget one and it'll ruin your grade!
Mitchell Walkowicz is by far the WORST lecturer I've ever had. It's impossible to follow him; his lecture slides have zero explanation, he jumps around from topic to topic, and his voice is inhumanely annoying. His exams are also unnecessarily confusing. And don't bother buying the books, he doesn't use them. This man is ridiculous. Awful teacher.
I hated Mitch for the first few weeks of class, but once you learn his teaching style he isn't too bad. Just don't expect to be spoon-fed the material; he isn't very good at explaining things in a way that non-bio majors would understand, so expect to put in a little extra effort in order to do well on the exams.
Extremely hard class! It doesn't matter how hard you study for his exams because they only test your analyzing skills. The questions are worded specifically to trip you up. The course material is interesting, but you won't get a good grade. CHOSE A DIFFERENT PROFESSOR.
Do not take this class as a gened because Mitchell does not know how to teach this material to people who don't know biology. Also, don't buy the books you'll never need them. And the exams are 75% of your grade. They're so much harder than they need to be so even if you study, you bomb them. This was too hard for a gened.
hes never prepared. hes a funny guy but the fact that your entire grade is based off three exams is not good at all. i do not recommend this class or the instructor, try to take a different class for this gen ed
Best lecturer I've ever had. Guy is super nice.
Mitch is a great professor for general micro! He ties in real life anecdotes in order to help teach the potentially stressful material. The quizzes help prepare you very well for the exams, which are fair.
Great guy. Jokes are on point during lectures. Class attendance does not matter. If you do the Writing Assignments on time and follow directions you'll get 100 on all of them. Really interesting stuff, tests are tough but if you study enough you'll do well. Cannot emphasize enough how cool Mitch is, really makes the class. Highly recommended.
Mitch doesn't require attendance and he posts all lecture slides online, so lots of people are tempted to perpetually skip. Then they complain the course was too hard. Mitch is generally pretty great and he tries his best to make the material relatable. Just show up, give it a LITTLE effort, and you'll have a great semester.
Does a good job at making the class amusing, however his lectures get confusing because he will start and stop a sentence multiple times. Lectures are difficult to take notes and online lectures don't have much information to go off on. Exams require a good amount of studying or you will fail. Only four writing assignments which are very easy.
Mitch is not a very good lecturer but his class was decent for me. He tends to ramble on and get off topic and I was often unclear on whether what he was talking about would be on the exams. Some biology background would be very helpful for this class. Exams are 50 multiple choice, not very hard if you went to class and studied even just a little.
His class was FILLED with information, you had to pay attention in that class. The tests totally weren't hard, but you had to remember the easy-to-remember examples from class. He had a great voice to listen to, but he definitely went a little fast, and he doesn't put the words on the slideshow just the pictures so you do need to pay attention.
He is super nice, and if you ask him to clarify something, he will do just that. Make sure to attend the exam review sessions held at night!
Ignores students Changes assignment dates regularly
Mitch is a really nice guy and knows his material well, but he is incredibly hard to reach. You have to email him 3 times before he will respond to you. If you have questions about graded material good luck getting answers. He is awful with Moodle and nothing is out of the correct point amount and there are lots of broken questions on the quizzes.
Honestly, Mitch is pretty chill guy and so long as you show up and barely pay attention, you'll pass. It's a very easy class. The reviews he posts on Moodle are nearly identical to the exam he gives.
This class was extremely interesting, and as long as you go to lecture the class isn't very difficult. The tests don't try to trick you although, you need to study. There is a textbook but I never read it. He has review session and is overall a really understanding man.
His powerpoints are terrible, they literally just consist of dumb graphs and pictures that never show up on the exams. He rarely ever teaches you useful information needed for the exam which absolutely screws you over for the exam.
Mitch is a great person and extremely knowledgable, however this integrative experience was extremely tedious. There are a lot of group projects and a lot of independent research of the topic you're discussing. Overall not a bad class, he is extremely lenient with deadlines which is a plus sometimes and he often goes on tangents which last awhile.
Walkowicz's lectures were interesting if you pay attention because he goes fast. There's 4 exams, but he drops the lowest one. I didn't buy the textbook and thankfully never needed it.
Overall, this class is an easy B+ and up. The material that we covered was interesting. Mitch covers material sort of fast in his lectures and is a little mono toned. If you miss anything you can just read over the info in the powerpoints. The powerpoints do contain a lot of seemingly useless info in the form of graphs. Would recommend 4 a gen-ed.
The class was very interesting and he is a pretty good teacher. It's not too bad of a class to take for a GenEd but the tests are actually kind of hard. I would study as much as I really thought I could and got 80s on all of the tests.
He makes the class interesting and is very reasonable with students. Exams are straightforward but difficult because the material is challenging. He doesn't assign homework but you have to read the textbook to do well. Doesn't remind you about due dates for syllabus assignments. Overall good guy and good professor. Cares about his students.
Lectures can drag because he's a bit monotone, but the material is interesting. If you get an 85 or up on the first test, you can stop going to class. He puts the slides online, anyway, and as long as you take detailed notes on them and study, you'll get a B+ or up. However, go to the review sessions he holds before a test. They're really helpful.
I hate science and decided to take this as a gen ed thinking it would be the easiest one. A lot of people don't go to lectures, he puts all powerpoints online, but i've found its v helpful to go to class. the papers/online quizzes are really easy. tests are not easy, but if you actually study throughly you can do well. he's pretty funny & easy goin
Mitch knows what he is talking about but doesn't put much effort into his job because he does not think he is compensated enough. His exams are obscure yet still specific and unlike what he tells us to prepare for, usually twisting his words and making the exam more difficult. There are only three papers, three quizzes and three exams in the class.
A great class to take as a gen-ed. I would say the science is pretty comprehensive and the material is interesting, especially if you're at all into health sciences. Mitch's lectures are funny, and although attendance is not mandatory, it will help! He explains the material very clearly and you will only have to do some light studying for exams.
Went into the class hating it but by the end of the semester, I really enjoyed the class. 4 exams and 4 forum posts. forum posts are essentially easy A's. exams are hard. go to class, study for it and you'll be fine. he gives extra credit.
This guy is literally the worst professor Ive ever had. He talks around concepts so its impossible to follow his logic. He uses these obscure analogies that only make sense in his own head. He expects students to follow his circuitous, rambling lectures. Even worse, hes unavailable when attempts are made to schedule office hours.
The class is graded on 3 exams, 4 new forum posts and 10 replies through out the semester, and quizzes on Moodle. Although his lectures are posted online, It's very helpful to go to every class and learn the material in person. Make sure to go over slides before the class! Walkowicz is a great professor!!
Overall this class is very easy to pass, I showed up only to a few lectures throughout the semester. Class is lecture heavy but if you pay attention to important details its nearly impossible to fail.
Mitch wastes SO MUCH class time, he goes off on random tangents that you don't need to know about and skips through important information on slides to make time for this. If I could have taken the class with just Yasu, I would have in a heartbeat.
He did not always cover the material very well and a lot of times questions would appear on the exams that were either never discussed or are trick questions. He also messed up answer keys and grading so much in my class that we would always get bonus points back, and sometimes his study guides did not match up with the true answer key.
DO NOT take this thinking its an "easy gen ed" unless you're already good in science. The material is very in depth. He is hard to follow in class because he just talks around topics and never gets to the point. It's very difficult to stay with him in class-- hes the type of professor that teaches as if the material is common sense for everyone.
Really bad professor. Disorganized, quiz/test questions don't match up with class material, very difficult to take notes because his lectures are all over the place and go off on tangents. Slides aren't thorough enough to study off of. While the class is interesting, Walkowicz is a very unfair/unorganized professor and it's not an easy gen ed.
Disorganized, out of his mind. 80% of the words he is saying doesn't match the words on the power point slide. Interesting course, but bad professor
Lectures were horrible. But the slides online don't help either. Exams are difficult and the information is rather random that is on them. Miserable class. Do not take as a GenEd. Not easy, much more difficult than any of my other classes.
Classes aren't mandatory but most of the test info is from what he rambles on about in lectures or in random slides in his power points and they're very hard to study for. He's very unorganized. I would never take a class with him again. I was told that microbio160 was an easy gened and read good reviews about him but he's truly an awful teacher.
Honestly...I enjoyed the class. Copy down the slides (all posted on Moodle), look it over before quizzes/tests, and you'll do just fine. Quiz/test questions are usually the notes verbatim. Interesting stuff.
Literally, just go to class, listen to him lecture and go on tangents, if you're confused, ask a question! It's one of the easiest 300 level classes I've ever taken; would recommend reviewing slides and notes for the exam for a couple days. don't stress it; he doesn't stress it much either.
Easily one of the best professors I've ever had. He puts notes on the slides but goes into more detail in the lecture. If you miss something he said or miss class he has all of his lectures online. He is a caring and incredibly knowledgeable professor and makes his lectures interesting by connecting them to the real world. Amazing professor!
He is one of the best professors I have had at UMass. He is well prepared for class and understands the material very well. He makes a complicated topic so interesting and even though attendance wasn't marked, he made me always WANT to be in class to hear his lectures. He does a fantastic job presenting information, and puts all the notes on Moodle
Attend and pay attention. You're good. Can skip b/c of online videos of lectures. No textbook. Frugal. Very generous on grading. On avg we received 9 points back on tests. Drops lowest grade out of all tests. Only note take from slides? You're in for a bad time. His slides aren't good for note-taking. Try not to autopilot in class but you can
He gets a bad rep because he can come off as intimidating but he really does care about his students success. This class was graded off forum posts (easy 100), some moodle quizzes (easy to do well on) and exams that he always gives EC on. Material isnt super easy, but with the time and effort you will do well. I suggest taking him! He is very fair.
I really like Mitch, I look forward to his lectures he's funny and obviously cares a ton about the material. He relates everything to real life and makes complicated subjects interesting. It's nice to have a professor who cares about what they're teaching. The material isn't easy but if you study a little and keep up with lectures you'll be fine
his classes are soooo easy, exams are open book if you're online, super chill dude everyone loves mitch!!
Microbio was so boring for me, but I found Mitch absolutely hilarious. Every day it felt like Mitch wanted to be there just as little as we did, and his "I don't care" attitude definitely made me feel better about also not caring. Free 30% for participation and easy 30% for quizzes with multiple attempts - this class is an easy A
I personally didn't like his style of lecture. He's very informal, kind of unstructured (skips around powerpoint slides) and sometimes hard to follow. Grading is set up so a majority of your grade is from quizzes with multiple attempts and forum participation. Tests are pretty fair, and easy when you can refer to notes online. Don't need textbook
Mainly your grade is going to be discussion posts (you only have to do it, and it can be about anything), quizzes (multiple tries), and then 5 exams (1 dropped). The class was an extremely easy A, especially with quizzes and exams open book, however, I did not learn anything. He's a great guy, but his teaching is very informal and hard to follow.
Really nice person, cares about his students and it shows. Will do his best to help you. Decent prof. If you like taking notes off of slides instead of writing down what the prof says then you're going to struggle a little to get down all of the info. Wish his slides were more text-based (they are very picture/infographic based.)
Professor Walkowicz is hands down one of my most respected professors at Umass . I had him my freshman year and I still think back to his lectures all the time. He explains things intellectually well. I learned a ton from his class and he made it interesting which helped considering how complex the material is.
It took me some time to get used to him, but after I did I learned a lot and did well. He can talk fast and assume that everyone knows what he's talking about, but he's also smart and funny. I really liked that he encouraged critical thinking about everything and taught about the social aspects of the subject, especially with HIV. Great guy!
Professor Walkowicz is very knowledgeable in his field and does his best to make students interested/engaged. This class was all lecture based, with exams (40%), quizzes (30%) and online forums (30%) making up the grading. He always gave points back on exams. If you read through all of the lecture slides before an exam you will be good
all the lectures are available on echo360, daily homework could be make up if late, test in person is a bit hard but not unbearable
I really loved going to Prof. W's classes. You could tell that he really knew his stuff, and even though biology and science really go over my head, he made it easy enough to understand (most of the time). TAs were amazing, and he grades only Packback (just discussions) and exams (which he usually gives 5-10 points back on each). Don't buy textbook
This man is incredibly down to earth, funny, and wants everyone to learn and succeed. He truly does care about his job and has immense passion for microbiology and what he teaches. His anecdotes and explanations are second to none, as they are very comprehensive and easy to digest. Guy is incredibly friendly and will work with you if you have issue
Walkowicz is fine, took as a Gen Ed and got an A-. Grade based on best scores out of the 4/5 tests and participation on an online platform (don't remember name of it, but costs around $30). Watched a majority of lectures online, studied a moderate amount, and got mid 70s on the tests, but he always gave points back, giving me an 80 test average.
Took this over the winter and it wasn't bad at all. There's 5 exams & quizzes, lowest one gets dropped. Easy pack back that can be on anything from the course. Allows multiple tries on quizzes. His teaching is hard to follow because it can be all over the place. Exams are pretty fair when you refer back to the lectures. Overall, easy A.
Professor Walkowicz is a decent professor with well-thought-out lectures; they can be highly dull. The source material may feel like it is not worth sitting around for, but the workload is smalloverall, pretty fair class.
Everyone loves Mitch! Attend lectures IN PERSON that's how you will learn, so don't rely on PowerPoint slides. Always gives 5-10 points back on exams and really does care about your learning. He also takes feedback good or bad to improve the course. Don't stress the class, as long as you attend lectures and know the review guide you will do fine.
He is super funny and the lectures are fun to listen to. The lectures might be hard to follow if you don't have a background in cell bio, biochemistry, or microbio. Weekly packback discussions, some quizzes, and exams are your whole grade. But he drops one exam so the class is manageable.
Walkowicz is a professor who knows what he lectures about and cares about his student's success. He'll be there to help you if you ask, his lectures are interesting and engaging. Lectures must be attended in person, watching them through ECHO-360 doesn't do them justice. 4/5 exams were graded, and everything else depends on the Packback questions.
Should have taken Biology in High School (would be easier to understand the phrases and information taught in class), however, this course didn't require you to understand very deeply of what you have learned. The professor is really engaging, learned a lot through all the lectures. There are only four quizzes and an exam (easy homework)
Didn't love this class because I signed up thinking it was going to be fun and easy. Walkowicz is a great professor if you're actually interested in the topics he teachers, for he's incredibly educated. Didn't love the slides though, it was mostly just blurry pictures with little to no words. Tests were straightforward and weekly homework was easy
Frequently late to class, confusing lectures, doesn't provide a clear outline of the semester. I could go on and on. His lectures are just him going from topic to topic, skipping slides, he's not open to feedback about altering format of lectures. TA is also unhelpful. If it is possible to avoid having Mitch I would recommend that you do!
Professor is routinely late to class. Lectures are ALL over the place and are often just pictures. He does not directly teach the topic, he will dance around it and make analogies that you are then expected to extrapolate the concepts from. He asks for feedback, does not take it, and regularly implies that you are stupid/lazy.
If you are like me and dreading doing your science gen ed requirement, TAKE MICROBIO160!! It was really easy and Mitch curves all of his exams which is always nice. I would say that I am taking more real life knowledge away from this class rather than actual core microbiology. Go to lectures+take notes+do the simple HW=easy pass.
Mitchell is a great professor, and the class is not that hard. He does a lot of rambling and sometimes you'll have no idea what he's talking about, but when you pay attention and listen to what he says you'll do well in the class. Only one homework assignment weekly for packback discussions and then 4 main exams with an optional final.
Very kind and understanding. Course material was also very interesting & helped us engage with scientific literature. But, the lecture slides were never taught in order, & his train of thought was very hard to follow. His voice was also very monotone, which did not help his class being in the morning. Graded on weekly discussions, quizzes, & exams.
Do not take this class. His lectures are all over the place. He doesn't put any information on the slides and then asks particular questions on the exams. So, if you missed something specific in his ramble during the lecture, you have to go back and rewatch the video to find it. He can seem charismatic when talking to the group but is rude 1 on 1.
Walkowicz clearly knows what he's lecturing about. Material can be confusing at times but review sessions before exams are great for clearing that up. There are 5 exams but one can be dropped, Moodle quizzes and weekly packback discussion questions/responses. If you do all the assignments and study for the exams, you'll be totally fine.
TAKE THIS CLASS! This was my favorite class this semester and I genuinely looked forward to every lecture; very funny and engaging. Mitch is a fantastic professor and you can tell that he cares a lot for his students and he is very helpful if you have any questions. Graded on weekly forums, Moodle quizzes, and exams w/ lowest grade dropped
Exams make up most of your grade. His lectures are all over the place. If you have good background in biology, chemistry, and microbiology then this class will be suitable for you, otherwise don't take it. He kept scaling our exams due to average being low and his final exam is recycling all the questions from previous exams.
not sure why he has such a high rating when he is not good at teaching lol. hes rude asf and his lectures are all over the place. hes late to almost every lecture and will imply/call students lazy/stupid. avoid taking him
Mitchell provided tons of important information that I am sure will be useful in the future. The problem was that he taught tons of it super quickly and expected us to know it. I found myself rewatching all of his lectures in order to get the grade I wanted on the exams. He ended up giving us points back on most of them and giving weird excuses.
I hated bio in high school, but I enjoyed going to Mitch's class. He's funny and approachable. He is also easily accessible outside of class via email. Your grade is heavily dependent upon Packback (super easy, but tedious) and exams (~45 MC questions). Awesome and chill guy who doesn't ask for much from us. Just show up and pay attention fr.
Professor W is a very funny person, but falls short as a lecturer. He typically talks "around" a concept and neglects to give solid definitions. This gives you a weak foundation to build off of. I found that his exams, while all multiple choice, were not the most representative of the lectures. Hard to predict what he wants us to remember most.
I enjoyed this class. 5 exams that are all multiple choice and you can drop the lowest grade. Weekly packback. Online quizzes every few weeks. Lectures are recorded so there is really no need to go to class besides exams. I recommend taking notes based off what he says rather than what is on the slide. He scales all the exams by like 5 points
Walkowicz is very intelligent, lectures are very interesting. Take notes on what he says rather than what's on the slides, then go back after lecture and jot down notes from the slides. His slides bounce back and forth between topics (can be a little confusing). Review basic microbiology terms and processes before this class and you will do great.
Walkowics is an amazing professor, he is very passionate. The material he discusses during lectures is very important for exams, definitely watch the recordings of the lectures if you don't go. I missed 2 of 5 exams and still ended well. You only have one homework assignment per week and there is usually 2 moodle quizzes before exams (with 2 tries)
Mitchell can have a dry sense of humor but it's evident he's very knowledgeable and wants his students to remember course information even beyond the final. His slides are sometimes out of order but the exams are based more on his lectures than the slides anyways. He drops one final, one quiz, and offers extra credit via Packback.
He is extremely unhelpful and no one has any idea what to do or how to study throughout the entire class. I went to every lecture, did every assignment, and typically do well in all of my classes, but this class is so unorganized and there is no structure. No idea what we are learning, and no help when asked.
Prof. Mitchell Walkowicz taught this class for the haters, and I am definitely not one. Despite speaking in riddles and appearing perpetually fed up, he communicated some complicated topics in accessible ways. He also referred to God as "she" casually and honestly? His outfits kind of serve.
his teaching is all over the place, i mainly study off the textbook bc his lectures are so confusing. 5 MC exams (1 dropped), no attendance, quizzes are easy and def study them bc he reuses quiz questions on the exams. so far this semester no extra credit or exam curves yet. wish there was a better 310 prof tho
Literally my bestfriend.
Bio 160 is the easy gen ed you are looking for.
mitch is so goddamn funny i can't leave him a bad review. but the way he explains things sometimes makes no sense. he is clearly very smart, but he assumes the information he is giving us is easier to digest than it is. once you can get his long analogies and riddle-like way of speaking, the content is interesting. tests require a lot of studying.
The way he talks/teaches is comedic and interesting, but sometimes I lose track of what we are talking about. Not easily accessible outside of class. He has made a lot of confusing typos and incorrect due dates on canvas. PackBack assignments are annoying, but workload is overall doable. Tests are 50% of ur grade!!!
Has a weird rapper-esque obsession with the "haters". PackBack is fun at first but you inevitably run out of things to ask. Warning: will talk about your Grandma when referring to cancer patients a lot. Has good insights to questions as long as you have the courage to speak up. Lectures are overwhelming at first but the quizzes and tests are fair.
Not a bad lecturer, packback was ok but became a chore. Exams are curved.
Mitch is a nice guy but all his lectures are all pictures. You have to pay attention to everything he says even the smallest details because that's what will be on the exams. The exams are HARD almost everyone fails them and he doesn't curve them!!!! There are 5 exams and he drops the lowest one but I definitely would NOT recommend taking this.
Prof Walkowicz is a chill dude, but his lecture style is very subjective and he goes fast, giving vague analogies often. The test questions can be pretty tricky as well, so after the first one I stopped attending lecture and taught myself. If you're willing to do that, then it's an extremely interesting class, albeit extremely content heavy.
Mitch is overall a confusing lecturer with out of order slides and saying random things. He excepts you to know a lot of information before lectures. His lectures were not mandatory, honestly easier to skip class and watch later on echo 360. Overall not horrible class if you study, especially quizlets.
Amazing professor! I was nervous about taking general microbio in the future so I decided to start with micro160. I have never learned more in any other class. Mitch is amazing at what he does and the way he explained everything helped all the material come so naturally to me. I plan on trying to get him again for general microbio
Mitch uses a non-traditional style of teaching which can be confusing at first, but the material is interesting so as long as you go to lecture and pay attention you'll do fine. Write down notes based on what he is saying and look at the slides later. Very easy class if you do the work.
I love mitch. Dry sense of humor and kind of out of pocket. Passionate about what he teaches but slightly disorganized/tends to go down rabbit holes; study what he says not what is on slide for exams. 50% of grade is quizzes and packback, 50% exams... 5 exams total including the final, one is dropped. You will learn a lot!
Teaching style and class dynamic can be really confusing at first because it's really lecture-heavy but not too bad once you adapt. He has a dry sense of humor and makes a lot of memorable jokes. He doesn't want to see anyone fail so he's not a harsh grader at all. Also not a lot of work outside class.
Mitch is really funny and entertaining, but he is not a good lecturer. He tends to ramble on, skip around, and go over ugly and hard-to-read slides very half-heartedly. If you're truly looking to learn a solid base about microbiology, either look to another class or another professor because Mitch won't do it. Decently easy to get a good grade tho.
The lectures are really disorganized and hard to follow. The slides are a mess with random bullet points and pictures. It's hard to predict what he's going to ask on the exams. Unless you have a strong bio background this class will be hard. Wouldn't recommend taking him unless you absolutely have to.
Worst prof I've ever had. Only teaches in analogies & useless slides. Exams based on what he says so its nearly impossible to study, & refused to reexplain stuff. Rude to student & to the poor TA, often called the class lazy & spoke in annoyed tone. 5 exams but only counted 4, final recycled questions. Quizzes & packback cushion a lot. Do not take
Mitch is the man. He lectures very story-like, so attend the lectures or at least watch the recordings(you won't do as well if you just read the slides). He's a genuine guy who cares about what he teaches, and Packback is clutch for participation.I had an interview for a job during an exam day and he offered to let me retake the exam on Sunday.
Mitch was the worst professor I have ever had. He is extremely condescending and always talks in riddles. All exam Qs are based on things he mentions during class (very few things are written on the slides that help you answer the Qs). The material was intriguing but I hated listening to Mitch talk. Packbacks are easy participation at least.
Take microbio of cancer and aids, you will learn A LOT!!!
Kind but terrible prof. Does not explain info, he just gives examples of stories. It is SO hard to follow along. The slides he posts are missing key information he quickly says out loud, and yet full of unnecessary info at the same time. Final mostly based off of old exam Q's. I got a C on every single exam and got an A on the final - memorize.
Pretty simple Bio Science Gen Ed, Mitch is funny and makes lectures more interesting (if you go to them). Packback assignments that're mostly every week are kind of annoying but easy part of your grade.
Exams in this class are very straightforward as long as you watch/attend the lectures. Some of the exam questions could be some random thing he mentions in class once. The lecture slides aren't too detailed so you have to listen to him explain certain concepts in order to get the full picture of concepts.
Prof. Walkowicz is fantastic, he is funny and informative. His exams are pretty straightforward and should be an easy A, he curves the exams or takes off bad questions often if they're too hard.
I hate biology and this class confused me but I always did better on the tests than I expected. He gives you the topics to study and I usually just spent a couple hours the night before and never got below an 85. Final exam is only previous exam questions and I aced it. If you don't like biology, Mitch will not change your mind. Very long winded.
Mitch is an engaging but disorganized lecturer. His classes are story-based and require attendance. While the slides can be confusing, the material is interesting if you engage with it. unstuck ai and Packback helped me stay on top of the content.
Mitchell is my man!!!!! He always delivers (he's not pregnant). A great professor with engaging lectures
I love MICRO160! I was not very interested in the beginning, but I've learned so much that is actually relatable. The exams are on all of the content gone over in class, but in order to do good on them, you have to pay attention to what he is saying, rather than what is on the slides. Very knowledgable prof with easy PB assignments.
Prof. Walkowicz is a great guy and clearly wants his students to learn. His slides are almost completely useless though so I would recommend taking notes on what he says rather than what is on the slide. There are weekly PackBacks, which really help out grade-wise. Exams are all multiple choice and true or false, which should be easy enough.
the class was pretty unorganized, but I enjoyed it. You pick a relevant topic of choice with a group and do a presentation about it using research papers. Wasn't a lot of pressure and I learned a decent amount about interpreting data in papers.
Professor Walkowicz was a very engaging professor and it was clear that he wanted students to succeed. As a non-science major this course was a bit difficult but he drops one quiz and test grade. This way, it is easier to succeed in this class. He is a great professor.
I'm not a STEM major, but I definitely learned a lot of interesting stuff with this class. Useful things too. His lectures were mostly interesting, and homework/tests were not too bad. As long as you keep up with the slides and key points in his lectures, you will be fine.
All 5 exams are all multiple choice but often feature random questions unrelated to the lecture slides, focusing instead on what he says in class. However, his lectures are disorganized and full of tangents, analogies, and unfinished thoughts, making it difficult to pinpoint key material.
Mitch, you either love him or you hate him honestly. If you are the kind of person who is not a good exam taker (like me) this class is difficult. Exams are 50% of your grade and the homework doesn't really apply what we are learning in class. Speaks in a monotone voice and powerpoints seem scattered. This class would definitely benefit from an si.
The information he “teaches” is just random facts that you won't comprehend if you don't have outside biology knowledge. You won't have any idea how the things he says relates to each other. No words on the slides either so you really have no idea what you're supposed to study. Exams are so difficult too. DONT TAKE AS A GEN ED BELIEVE ME.
Overall, I think he's a great prof. As long as you pay attention during lectures, you should be fine. He's a very fair grader, and gives points back if everyone missed the same questions on the exams. Sometimes it's a bit hard to follow along with his way of teaching, but he gives out good study guides and does review sessions before every test.
There's an online forum you buy (Packback, $40 total) to make a weekly question and respond to 2 others (super easy). 4 online quizzes and 5 exams but lowest grade was dropped for both. Rarely studied and got 75s on exams, but saved my paper exams and made a quizlet at the end of the sem and memorized it for the final (got a 96). Take this class!
Lectures are super random & disorganized. He's interesting, and you can learn a lot, but it gets boring and has very odd slides (random dates & newspaper headlines). 5 Exams (drop 1), I never studied for them until the night before using his Exam Review, and I managed 85-92 for all of them. Not that great as a Gen Ed (an easy A if you work smart!).
This course is extremely straightforward. Five Exams, one of which is dropped. All exams are multiple choice and typically have generous curves (4-6 points!). Showing up is 80% of studying. Accessible Natural Science Gened requirement. Everyone should take this class to learn more about cancer and what it takes to treat it.
He says comments in lectures and makes them seem insignificant when they end up being exam questions. There's too many topics you have to remember for each test and I get that having background knowledge in cancer and whatever is useful but not really if your career has nothing to do with life sciences. Worst gen ed I was forced to take. Crazy.
If you don't have background in biology, avoid this class or you will suffer. Prob the hardest class in my 4 years of college.
Very funny, speaks a little too quickly but uploads lectures to echo. Review sessions the weekend before exams were the most helpful, very passionate about the subject.
His negative energy is, imo, main reason for poor attendance/participation. Exams were HARD (i went to all classes & sat in front) He'll say not to study certain things but they end up on the exam, dont fall for it. Much of his statistics r from 20 yrs ago. Throw out your knowledge on current health stats, he tests u on how he teaches. Tyrant prof.
Just to start off, the mean for all FIVE exams, even though multiple choice, was in the 60s. The class was interesting, I did learn a lot, and Mitch is a nice guy, but don't take this to fulfill your bio requirement unless you love bio. Exams in person, weekly packback.
Lectures were optional but I usually tried to make it to everyone. Very interesting course and he teaches it very well. Exams were somewhat difficult, but it all came from the lecture, and he told us some of the questions that might be on it. Overall good course and if you have interest in cancer or aids, I would totally recommend taking this.
Prof Walkowicz was nice, but his lectures tended to be confusing. Attendance optional so I kinda lacked. 5 exams, 1 drop for your lowest grade. Packbacks weekly. Overall, easy course load, but just study well for the tests and don't leave till last min. He's easy to reach out to with questions and understanding. Better/easier Gen Eds though.
The lectures were all over the place. He would jump from one topic to another without really explaining how anything connects. Even when students asked questions, the answers didn't help much because he just repeated the same thing. Also the exams are extremely hard, at least for me who is a non bio major
Too many exams and way too disorganized
Your best bet is to attend lectures so you understand the criteria. You have weekly packbacks but that's not difficult. 5 exams and drop the lowest score. You take quizzes online which is good padding for your grade. The test questions are sometimes not on the study guide so you have to attend lectures
Great professor, it's not an easy class, you will have to study, but it's really not that bad. I'm awful at bio/science and consistently got 90s. Lectures are recorded so you don't have to show up, but you should so you can understand better. Mitch is very helpful, answers questions outside of class time and wants to help you learn.
Most reviews are too harsh. Just attend lectures and study the material before test.
One of those professors who is very unorganized. There are five exams including the final and the questions seem unrelated to what we talked about in class. He will randomly blurt out information that he puts on the exams but will never mention it again. If majority of the class gets a question wrong he does give points back. I wouldn't retake.
Feels like every week you are studying for a new test, as there are 5 throughout the semester. The slides are very disorganized and the material you are tested on is so random. He will mention something minuscule once and it will be an exam question, its ridiculous. He is a great person, however; the class is not run well.
Everyone says its a hard class, thats not true. there are 5 exams, but one can be dropped. he makes it really easy to get an A as long as you watch his lectures. Just pay attention in class and take notes for an easy A. Really good professor, stimulates interest in the subject.
Never went to class, easy to catch up. good guy, knows what hes talking about. im not a bio major, but just watch his recordings and you'll ace the class.
A good professor that teaches a difficult course. As long as you come to lecture and pay attention, you should receive a good grade. Gives quizzes/study guide in preparation for exams which are helpful.
Mitch is probably the worst professor I've ever had (in 7 semesters). He cannot teach but instead chooses to randomly speak in a way that comes across as riddles. Incomplete sentences, improper grammar, ramblings, it's not conducive to a students' learning. Exams make up 50% of grade but you may not even recieve A. an exam or B. the correct exam.
This is the first time I have ever truly hated a professor's teaching style. I do not think I learned a single thing in this class. Mitch is very nice, but cannot teach material. He often goes off on tangents, most of his slides are just pictures, and he asks exam questions that are never covered in class. First time struggling to get an A.
I had to take a makeup exam and he made me take it on a bench under the stairs, right outside of N151. So beyond unorganized and goes on random tangents throughout class. He is nice but there was always a problem with his exams. He either didn't print enough or gives you the wrong one. Couldn't recommend any less.
Mitch is an awesome person. I will say it took a couple classes to adjust to his lecturing style, but once I did I learned a ton. He was always super caring and available outside of class. If you put in the work, you will do well. This class reminded me how much I like bio and I would definitely take another elective with him.
Though I'm not a bio major, this was a bit difficult for a gen-ed. Mitch has a very particular teaching style. I tricked myself into finding biology interesting and then studied HARD for exams. Overall, he's nice, though. He drops the lowest quiz and exam grade, so easy to skip the final if you do well.
HORRIBLE teaching style. lectures were ramblings, and he jumped from one point to the other with little connection. slides are just random pictures, so all you have are his ramblings to rely on. exams feel like they were generated by AI with how many strange questions there were. a thing he talked about for just 0.02 seconds would be in them.
310 with Mitch Walkowicz is by far the worst class I've taken. This class is unnecessarily difficult. Completely true what others said about the exams being 2% of what the slides say, which is all there is to study. He actually gave half the class the wrong exam. There's a reason there's an influx of 1's coming in this semester.
Mitch is chill but he is a bad professor. The majority of what he says is not related to the material itself but related to the news and real-world examples of microbio- he does not teach. The exam answers are on Quizlet, making it easy but if answers weren't on quizlet the exams would be very difficult with questions on random things he says.
He is the best. If you are someone that does not come to lectures, you will not do well on the exams. Everything he says in class is on the exam, and it is very easy to study and earn a good grade. He is also just a very understanding guy if you reach out to him about something.
