Ididn't think she was a very effective teacher.
She made great handouts/breakdowns to compliment sometimes confusing discussion/textbook. Great prof- great course.
good teacher, not boring, handouts ARE AMAZING and maybe an easier selection for the textbook....we are only first year students remember? I had to re-read each chapter like 10 times and i still didnt get it. We spent valuable tutorial time re-caping cuz no one gets the book
Mitu is a relaxed, fun teacher, and has an ease with the material. She never read her notes when she lectured: that's pretty amazing. She gave us chocolates at the midterm: that was nice. The textbook sucked though, it was too dense.
Very fun and easy going.
The handouts that she gives out are VERY HELPFUL. that was a really good idea. however the lecture were pretty boring
Wicked Freaken Prof. very open, will to try new things overall a wicked class although the text book cramed a lot of info in small spaces the class was very wel conveyed by the prof. thanks for a wicked semester. see you in POG 110 woot!
Mitu is a very easy going prof. She can relate to us students and she is very personable and approachable. In addition, she is great at what she does and must have an amazing passion for Poli Sci since she was able to clarify the textbook for us through her handouts and engage us in roaring class discussions. Thanks for a cool semester!
Really well spoken, personable prof. She knows whats she's doing. Every piece of information that is given is related in some way to a current situation, which is interesting and easy to understand. Overall, a good experience.
It was interesting at times but mostly boring. Kind of dumb how she knew the textbook was difficult but made us buy it anyway even though if it meant 95% of the class didn't understand it...waste of money.
excellent profffff..easyyy goingg..very helpful handoutss..overall, shes a very sweet proff who treats all her students equallyy...all proffs should be like her..loved her class!!!
it's so easy to like her... and she makes even the dullest subjects seem interesting, although you know she is kinda bored too! she's so cute too.
Sweet, clear and knowledgeable. She knows what she's talking about and makes class enjoyable. Speak up for yourself though, people shouldn't talk through lecture! Very fair marker, very fair exams.
Lacks control of the class. Lacks grasp of content. Worthless class, unless you like hearing first-year students talk about how their mother was an immigrant and managed to succeed in Canada, and coming to the conclusion that because of that, the Canadian immigration system is good. I get dumber by the minute in that class.
Cdn poltics is really dry. Mitu Sengupta is not. If you have a problem with the course, recognize that its not the prof, but Cdn politics as a subject. Who really cares about Cdn poltics? And no, its not her job to make it interesting. Talking to her in person makes you realize how smart she is. She is too interesting to be teaching us this BS.
First, to all those people who wrote harsh things on Mitu, you are all clearly the ignorant persons who come to lecture to talk through it. if you dont like the class drop it and save those of us who are interested in mitu's lectures the pain of hearing your meaningless conversations in the backround.
it's true. all the bad reviews seem to be from the same student who thinks she is better than all us dumb first years and even the prof!
i was in class with the chart. the only thing wrong prof mitu did was to put up with an annoying student who asked irrelevant questions
Love this prof? Mitu! (Hahahaha - get it?)
I LOVE THIS PROF! She is awesome, she knows her stuff, and knows how to keep us attentive in lecture (although I once fell asleep for half an hour..she told me that it's ok because she would have done the same). The only people who seem to have a problem with her are those who don't read or pay attention in lecture.
could be better
the multiculturalism lecture was good!
If you like teachers who speak in vague terms and avoid giving relevant facts, this prof is for you. She hasn't attacked issues from any perspective but that of the same 12 students who enjoy hearing themselves opine. You haven't learned anything in this class? Mitu! (Get it?)
This prof is awesome but takes too much**** from the students. However, she doesn't bluntly state that the perosn is an idiot, she just kind of strays away from their idiotic response. In the class it's usualy the same 3-4 people talking. And they're usualy talking complete nonsense
A Great Prof! It was her first time teaching at Ryerson, and she did a great job of taking basic Pol Sci ideas and changing them into controversial topics the whole class had some what interest in. The whole class usually gets involved and its a great time. (aside from the haters that come on here, instead of speaking up in class)
horrible
Good teacher, I love her political views. To many out of class essays though.
Nice professor great for studing poltics just used too many presentations
she is excellent and very fair. the workload is a bit miserable for a first year class!
class was dead-boring!the lectures that i DID pay attention to (where i've had about 3 cups of coffee) were somehwat interesting, she just needs to be more enthusiastic so dat half the class dons't leave by the 2nd half of lecture. But if u're looking for easy course this is it. She gave us the exam quest'ns & her t.as mark easy. gud luk staying awak
Great prof! Very knowledgeable, very articulate, easy going and a great sense of humour.
She is excellent - helpful, knowledgeable and creates a good atmosphere in class. She was always helpful during her office hours. I think she made some of the more boring stuff in the class a little more interesting. She is my favourite prof at Rye. Take her class!
Excellent prof! The clarity and preciseness in her lectures was astounding.

If you have NO knowledge of Canadian politics go for it otherwise a HUGE waste of time.
This course discusses some interesting topics. This course isn't hard or easy. Somewhere in between, so don't expect an A while doing no work at all. Lots of readings involved and lots to remember. The TAs are helpful (and beautiful!). No final exam, but there is a final essay. Good for an intro intro to politics.
Professor Sengupta is very knowledgeable and also warm and open-minded. I felt very free to express my own views even though they seemed different from hers.
Very nice teacher, she marks students fairly. Lectures are informative and interesting for the most part. Enjoyable class.
good stuff
she is very good and very helpful. knows her stuff and has amazing slides. but don't get on her wrong side. she is not the softie she seems...
I like Sengupta and she teaches well. My only qualm is occasionally she tries to rush through all the powerpoints and so there isn't a lot of time for discussion. She marks fairly, and doesn't take s***. Also shes cute, easy on the eyes during lecture.
One of the better professors I've had at Ryerson. The course material is concise, interesting and relatively easy. She has a bit of bias in her teaching and relies heavily on her TAs for marking but is also very kind and accommodating.Oh, and she's hot too.
Totalitarian structure, nearly useless and outdated text.
she tells a lot of annoying people in class to shut up, which i personally am fine with. i also like the structure: it's good for a big, first year class.
She is helpful and really knows her stuff. I think she is the best prof I have had at Rye so far. What can i say - take her class! You will like the course, her and on top of that you are getting a hot prof!
The course is straight forward and not difficult. At the start of the course my impression of her was good. At the end,not so much. For a prof, Sengupta complains a lot on the announcements. Making an announcement about not answering students how to get to the gym is rediculous. Why not just answer it in your announcement post?
This course was decent for an intro-style politics class. Minimal text use, and the marking wasn't hard. Her teaching style is a tad boring, if she was a little more enthusiastic about what she was discussing it would make the class better. BTW all you people complaining about the GYM exam thing, get over it, you can't be spoon fed all your life.
I liked Prof. Mitu. She is definately a good lecturer and can be very helpful and kind and friendly. I think she just doesn't suffer fools, and that's why some ppl have problems with her. If you make an effort I think she's there for you. I agree she's cute but ppl shouldn't make such comments about her as the one below!
I liked Prof. Sengupta. She makes class interesting with her colourful slides and films. I learned a lot in the class. The tutorials were also good, but most people don't take them seriously enough so the discussion suffers. All in all, a positive experience.
She is such a good teacher, and she answer all our questions. You must attend all her classes otherwise u will just get lost, the textbook is helpful too but I recommend for you to read it after each class as you will understand it better.
She is such a good teacher, and she answer all our questions. You must attend all her classes otherwise u will just get lost, the textbook is helpful too but I recommend for you to read it after each class as you will understand it better.
Lacks clarity, generalizes everything to the point information is lost, moody, changes class times to start earlier, likes to talk in circles...Bad mistake!
the intro politics course is sooooooo pointless... very boring course, although this prof was ok.
I liked this course- very interesting, good learning & its my cup of tea. Tests are fair (easy for me)-study the website MC quizzes some of the q's will appear on the tests. Read book & slides. Go to all tutorials & participate- speak at least 2 times per tutorial for high mark. I had a good TA. Lectures are boring at times - still good prof & class
Overall she was a decent professor. Hammers home important stuff through the lecture. Multiple choice and essay mid term and final. MC is easy but essays are marked pretty hard by the TAs. You have to go to tutorial because 15% of your mark is attendence for tutorial
Very good prof. But hates people missing class. Show up to class and your marks will improve.
Awesome prof. Yeah, she does like people attending class. She makes them fun tho.
Watch out. Her classes are harder than they seem at first. She's a hard marker and expects you to be really thorough. I thought I was sailing with an A- and ended up with a B-. It was still worth it because I learned a lot. To be fair, this prof really works hard for the students. She is one of the most well prepared I have taken at Rye.
I agree that Prof. Sengupta is very well prepared. She obviously puts in a lot of effort. Has excellent slides/notes and shows film and video clips all the time. My interest was high. However, she can be bad-tempered and unhelpful, and is a hard marker. She expects a lot. But it was worth it as I learned more than in most other classes.
I have no complaints about Prof. Sengupta. She is balanced and good natured. I have complaints about the students who take this class though. Baseless opinions and a whole lot of whining. They ruined my experience in the class.
why is she given such high ratings? She is very hard marker and mostly not fair grader.
she is a hard marker. but one of the best profs in terms of what you learn from the course. good use of videos and films.
Hard marker but good prof all around. Has a short fuse though, stay on her good side.
I will always love Ms. Sengupta. She's an awesome, intelligent, and respectful professor! I would recommend her to anyone in a second. I'm not even a politics major (in busn mangement), but she really makes me wanna be one! Great prof...
Truly intelligent prof. Has a warm and easygoing manner in class. Is good at getting people to debate controversial issues by creating an open and non-judgemental atmosphere. She doesn't take any b**lsh**t from students tho, so don't expect to coast through the course.
Loved this class. It changed my world!
Excellent prof
a very kind professor.
Excellent prof. Very sharp. Has a nice, easygoing manner despite being pretty tough.
her lectures are good but she has so much expectations.. her mt, exams are usually take home and she uses turn it in to mark everything. if u dont participate in class you give get a poor mark
This course is legit. Good way to get easy marks is to attend her tutorials and know the key concepts. Overall, this Prof is excellent in teaching and the marking scheme is moderate.
Mitu is one of the best professors I have had throughout my academic career. She is knowledgeable, approachable and very good at generating a class discussion. The materials were engaging! If you are in the MPPA program at Ryerson definitely take the course.
She's a good professor. The only complaint I have is that she once said: "study hard because you'll be competing against good students." In other words, your grade will depend on everyone's grades, not on your knowledge. It would be fun if the whole class did poorly on purpose, forcing her to give everyone good grades then.
I like her s a professor, but she is a weird combination of being very laid back and very controlling (with high expectations). She is not particularly helpful, and doesn't seem interested in shooting the breeze as many profs at Ryerson are. She knows a lot about global politics and the UN system in particular.
This was a good course and the prof is def very smart and competent. I prefer the older prof at Ryerson though as they are more helpful and compassionate. Sengupta like other younger profs is really more interested in her own research than anything else. Still, a good learning experience.
She's a good prof, but has incredibly high expectations and does not suffer fools easily. It's easy to fall from grace with her, so watch out!
Really liked her and learned from the course. It wasn't easy, but not brutal either. Very fair, and a sweet person.
such a great teacher, made class really enjoyable. Watched a lot of movies which were easy to understand and make connections to the materials covered.
Love her as a person. Pretty good prof but definately makes you work for the grade! A semi-tough markers. However I learned a lot from her class!
There's a lot of depth to Ms. Sengupta. She has great insights and has an easygoing manner. Lots of great movies too. However, she makes you work hard and doesn't let you get away if you wan to coast. She asked some really tough questions about Batman, if you can believe that! Made me think of the movie in a different way.
I didn't think the course was hard at all, but people probably come into a class on film and politics thinking they can just watch movies and sail through. Discussions in this class were disappointing as most of the students are in businesssciences and don't even know what apartheid was.
Easy class if you make even the slightest effort. Discussions not good, but not prof's fault. Students not political at all.
She is an excellent prof and I learned more than I have in most of my classes at Ryerson. However, she is very demanding and the course is very conceptual. You need to be comfortable with theory. Someone said she hates people missing class. Absolutely true: if you don't show up to class, be warned, she will hold that against you.
Dr. Sengupta is very thorough and obviously extremely hard working. Also a fair and balanced person. One of the better profs I've had at Ryerson.
She talked about the same thing throughout the whole course and focused very specifically on India/China in terms of the films we watched. We spent so much course time just watching movies. She cancelled our tutorial section and instead we had to write blog posts. She was also very very boring when she did lecture.
I liked this class too, especially the final discussions around Blood Diamond. The India/China films were good too. I too thought she gave good, constructive feedback. I got very specific feedback that was about a page in length. I didn't know what to expect when I took this class, but I was pleasantly surprised.
Good points: clear about expectations, marks fairly, interesting, philosophical readings, online/tech savvy prof, returns emails quickly. Bad points: expects hard work; blog allows the usual students to whine endlessly about sexism, racism, sad immigrant experiences; more conservative viewpoints needed in readings.
Smart and kind person. Course was not what I was expecting, it was entirely about development. I didn't find class engaging at all. If you show up and do the work you will get a good grade. If I had known the course topic I would of chosen a different liberal. one essay, short answer mid-term and final, weekly blog posting.
Didn't find it hard at all. Maybe because I am a journalism student. Nice to have a young feminist woman of colour who puts loudmouths in their place as my prof.
Intellectually stimulating class. Not an easy ride, but it's worth it. Exam criteria were clearly set out and work was graded very fairly. Prof is very pleasant, but has a no-nonsense edge.
Great professor, easy class to get an A in if you watch the films and participate. Assignments were clear and engaging. Overall, a fun class if you're interested in politics.
She's a pretty good prof, the only thing is, she's not the most understanding person. if you have a tough semester or some strenuous circumstances, don't go to her hoping for an considerate outcome. She doesn't really care much about that. But other than that, really can't fault her on anything. Her class was interesting and she marks alright
My best class at Ryerson so far. Prof. is easygoing and very smart. Gets me to think in ways I did not before. Amazing selection of films.
Definitely my favourite class this semester. Dr. Sengupta is great prof and actually shows full length films in class as opposed to the other profs for this course, which is questionable for a film class. Does not take attendance often. You analyze the films in class so I'd recommend you go because she has really interesting and enjoyable lectures!
amazing professor. interesting topics covered. super approachable.
Loved this class and professor. Not only is Mitu super smart and knowledgeable, but she has a great sense of humour and is super chill generally. NOT easy though: you've got to work for that A!
She's a good prof who is both approachable and knowledgeable about course content. However, i found that she was a very hard marker and didn't clearly communicate the expectations for the midterm and final exam.
Best teacher for politics and film, 1st test is pretty much a what's the movie about type questions, she marks hard on it and she says it but that's the only thing she marks hard. the essay is easy I thought I didn't to well on it but ended up receiving an 80%, and the last test is a take home test and you have a month to do it. Take her!
Smart and kind prof, but hard to get hold of for one-on-one consultations. It's a demanding class.
Sweet prof. Shes super kind, an excellent lecturer. She scrapped our 8am class basically because it was so early. She gave us the midterm and final exam beforehand. Assignments were very easy. Lots of opportunities to make up marks.
Well organized and structured class with good lectures, clear instructions for the assignments, and fair marking. On the downside, it was too big and impersonal and TA-dependent. If you had a bad TA, you'd have a bad experience. My TA was fine, but much older than Prof. Sengupta, which was a little weird.
This class wasn't great, but at least we were returned graded assignments quickly which hasn't been my experience in other classes. There was a lot of flux with guest lectures, but I didn't mind as they were pretty good. My TA could have been better though he was a fair market. I would say the course on the whole was somewhat better than average.
Great Professor!! Was transparent about the syllabus, detailed about assignments and gave decent feedback. Knowledgeable about the material and never gets boring! The readings are pretty interesting and easily apply to course material. Learned a lot in this class, wasn't stressed in the slightest. Very accommodating too!
You didn't have to show up to class to do well in this class, only to the tutorials. Everything was very clear and information posted on D2L was detailed and up to date.
I love her SO MUCH! Such a genuinely caring professor. She is so well educated and knowledgeable about what she teaches, its impressive. I slept through her exam (I fell asleep at my desk studying), ran to where the exam was halfway through SOBBING and you could tell she was so sympathetic, literally hugging me. She let me make up for it too.
One of the best Profs out there! I really enjoyed her class. Her assignments are really easy! She doesn't mind if you hand in your assignment 1-2 days late but after 2 days you will get your marks deducted for handing in late. But make sure you do your work on time and you will be fine!
The course is not an easy A, you have to work for it. She's really nice, makes lectures entertaining and is a fair marker. There are a lot of readings and weekly assignments to do. Her TA's are not the best as they are tough graders and not as nice as her. Overall she is a great prof!
I would suggest avoiding her at your best. One of the worst profs at Ryerson. She is not caring and does not help you with anything. I would rather take an engineering course than this.
She is forgiving, and a great marker herself. Her assignments and discussions were fairly easy and the films we watched were very Interesting. The problem I had was not with her, but the TAs. They were tough graders for the assignments, it felt like they would not mark according to the rubric at all. Beware of the Tas.
If you want to waste your time and money by all means take this class! Ridiculous course honestly and unrealistic amount of homework!
This is a challenging course because the readings are hard (but brilliant) and there's lots of homework via the discussion board. Prof Sengupta is thoughtful and kind and a fair marker. But she's also tough and has no problem shutting down people and denying appeals. Do not take this class if you're expecting an easy A.
I love this prof. She's approachable and sweet, though with a total no-nonsense edge and organizational skills of an army general. Makes you work for your grade, is a bit too woke, but still always fair and willing to listen to everyone's point of view. Great class overall!!!
Great class. The course is not easy but the professor is transparent about her expectations.
Lecture were optional and were more tutorial oriented. She was eager to hear student opinions during discussion period. Does not like repeating instructions. Films selected were insightful and readings helped to elevate understanding. Marking was a bit hard, but fair too, on 2 major tests. Exam was very straightforward if studied thoroughly.
It isn't a hard class if you study. The multiple choice questions were super easy and straightforward. Essay questions were marked hard by the TAs. Discussion post enteries had to be done every week and if you did that you got a good grade. Overall, she's a fair and transparent prof.
Prof Sengupta is great in that what you see is what you get. She's a competent lecturer, her multiple choice questions are easy and fun, and yeah she does NOT like repeating instructions :-) She said at the beginning of the course that if you keep up and do the work you will come out with an A or A-. She was right.
I wish she would get rid of the long essays. Otherwise a terrific class. Prof is clear and easygoing.
Had little to no interaction with professor Sengputa. Class was very easy however; and exam was also very straight forward. 10/10 would recommend her class.
I ended up going about the class by not attending the non-mandatory lectures & simply getting into the groove of watching the films, reading the slides, doing the readings, and then filling out the discussion questions. The midterm did catch me off guard, be very thorough with it. She is very organized. Final exam was far easier than the midterm.
Attending classes are irrelevant, as Professor Sengupta may suggest to you. She does not like repeating herself and is all about hands-off, online instruction. I've never actually seen her. The multiple choice tests and weekly discussion posts are straightfoward. The caveat is the TAs' hard marking on the midterm, the final exam is a piece of cake.
Straightforward and easy class even if you do the bare minimum of work and follow assignment rules. Prof is efficient and very transparent and consistent. Beware, though, when she means no extensions, she means it and does not care even if you plead.
Agree with most of what's said here. Sengupta is transparent and fair and keeps everyone well informed. There are too many readings for some of the sessions, in my opinion. I didn't realize a film class would have so many readings. The films take time to watch and then there are 40 pages of reading every week. It's a lot.
Prof is organized and clear about expectations and transparent about the grading process. But watch out, as this isn't a "bird course." You can get away with a C+/B- with little to no work, but A will mean a hard slog. Prof likes answering questions with questions.
I agree with most of what has been said by other students. Don't expect hand-holding.
She is fair, a straight shooter. I genuinely like her. The class is very easy if you study even the minimum and complete assignments on time. Virtually impossible to fail or get a D unless you are asleep. She can be compassionate. I got locked out of my test by D2L and she stayed online with me until we were sure I was back in.
Easy and interesting class. Prof is a combination of being super woke (big fan of crt and gender fluidity) and super old school and bureaucatic ("I will not make exceptions for any student" and "talk to your program coordinator"). Somehow worked for me, but I'm a mature student.
The class isn't hard by any stretch of the imagination, but there's a lot of material to keep up with. It is honestly a question of staying plugged in. Professor is transparent, fair and efficient. Her lectures are good (attend them if you can, even though you can sail through without).
I took this class for an easy A but ended up enjoying it a lot more than my program courses.
Amazing professor, always available to relate, explain and help students.
clear and well organized. a little aloof, but fair.
As many of the ratings have said the course is easy if you keep up with films and readings. There's quite a lot to get through, but none of it is hard. Sengupta is transparent about expectations and puts many resources online. Easygoing and seems to genuinely like students.
She's a stickler for deadlines, so watch out. Doesn't let you do makeup work without submitting a ton of useless documentation.
For an elective, this course has more work then other- much more important classes. She assigns a movie every week, and 2 discussion posts as well as a comment. This doesn't sound like much, but it brings your weekly workload up quite a bit.
This prof releases the first course-related grade so late that you wouldn't know if you're doing badly to drop... Her grading feedback is unclear, almost none unless you request( a whole process). She or her TA, whoever grades, must include clear feedback, especially on discussion board grading. To conclude, her grading system needs improvement.
The criticisms of the course seem mostly unfair. It's an easy course if you make a comparatively small effort. She is generally very strict about deadlines, which might be a cause of disgruntlement. My advice would be to trim the Discussion Board assignment since the weekly deadlines are too much and detailed comments are not given in any case.
She's nice. Just a midterm, exam and discussion posts. Discussion posts can be tedious to do (answer 2 questions + 1 reply every week). Midterm and Final multiple choice portions were excellent (only if you actually watched the movies), but the short answer component was often marked brutally. Not a bird course, work is required for an A.
I've taken two courses with her. The 1st year POL128 was easy. POL609 (Global Justice) was much more demanding. I ended up with B+ and I was among the best students in the class. I learned a lot, but my GPA suffered. Take the course with Moura if you can as he teaches it as a film studies course. Sengupta is hard core logic/ philosophy.
Such an incredible prof. She truly cares about her students and the topics covered in her class. Participation was easy because she created such a welcoming environment. She has to be one of my favourite profs at the university. 10/10. Such a queen.
this prof takes this class way too seriously especially for an elective over movies, grades harshly on the exams. no proper feedback, and isn't willing to accommodate for students. i asked to take our final exam at a different time on the same day due to personal reasons. she said no & accused me of not taking my academics seriously...
This course is easy to pass but difficult to get an A in. I got stuck at A-minus for everything. That said, the films were interesting, politically on the left (with anti- racism and Islamophobia a strong focus), and she is definitely a no-nonsense straight shooter. I can imagine lol she turned the student's exam rescheduling request down.
It's not hard to do well in this course. I would say it is very easy to pass it if that's all you want. Be warned, though, this is not a bird course either. You have to put in a fair bit of work for an A- or A.
I dropped the in-person course in the Fall and ended up in this section instead. The virtual class is way more convenient and easier to engage with. The prof was more fun and willing to discuss controversial issues. The tutorials had a mandatory camera-on policy which took some getting used to.
I would say easy to get up to a B+ in the course. Don't give into temptation to copy stuff from online sources or AI-assist your essay answers because the prof gives zeroes if she finds out. That's pretty much the only way to do badly in the course.
HARD MARKER! I tried so hard to get an A but could not.
The course has an engaging mix of films and discussions, but the grading can be quite strict. Attending class is a must, and using resources like Unstuck AI can help with study prep. Overall, a solid elective with some work required for a good grade.
You are guaranteed a good grade if you follow the course rules and do basic work. She is clear about expectations and answers questions quickly. Prof posts many messages about giving students zeroes if they have used ChatGPT or not cited readings in the tests. She seems quite strict and unforgiving in that respect.
Mitu is straightforward to contact and the only homework is for bonus points. She's definitely an easy teacher. She gives you whatever you need, but you need to study and watch the films on your own to do well on the exams. The TAs mark hard for the essay portion of the exams, so you'll have to watch the films and make a good personal response.
not helpful at all, async class and gets paid a fully salary just to make a post a day the TAs do all the work.
I had an amazing experience with Prof. Sengupta. What I liked was that there were articles from this summer meaning she has updated the readings and modules for this school year where I feel other professors would just reuse old material. Fair marker and the exam was all multiple choice; got a 99%. One tip: DO NOT USE CHAT GPT. You will get a 0!
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE UNLESS YOU WANT TO LOWER YOUR GPA!
This is not a "bird course" you can coast through. It requires a fair amount of work and attention, but the material is not hard. If you want an easy A without work avoid this class and prof.
The final exam was easy with an average of 88%. The course gets easier towards the end and it's obvious they trying to weed out people in the first two tests. Definitely don't plan to ChatGpt your way through the course though.
I got a good grade, and you learn a lot, but this course is MUCH HARDER with Sengupta than it is with other profs like Moura. If you want an easy course, take it in another term with a different instructor.
The hate for her is so unwarranted. I was stressed she would be unfair but she's literally just looking for cues that you actually watched the movies and read the articles. She's firm yes but load your answers with detail and you'll be fine. For lazy people who don't do anything but use AI, she'll obviously be a nightmare.
Course was interesting but she is a tough grader and won't reply to emails If you want to request something. I would never take any course with her again.
Professor Sengupta is one of the best (and nicest!!) professors. She's been very patient and understanding, competent and proficient with what she teaches. She's also very accessible outside class, which she doesn't have to be, but it's very heartwarming to see how much she cares about her students and their success. Hope to learn from her again!
She was a bit tough, but it was a good class overall and I learned a lot. Knew her stuff and was able to explain it clearly. Seemed a bit of a hard ass but when you spoke to her she was very reasonable and helpful. Overall it was a great class and I'd would recommend taking her classes. Do the work and keep up with assignments and you can do good
She and her assistants mark on the harder side but aren't unfair. She'll be nice to you if you put in the work but seems impatient otherwise.
This is a good class, and Professor Sengupta is fair and even handed. My only complaint is that it moves too fast through too many topics. More time on international relations concepts and issues would be appreciated.
The professor and tutorial leaders were fine. The downside is that the class is too big and becomes easily dominated by one or two people who love to hear their own voices. Prof had a hard time with one particular guy who railed against feminism and seemed permanently angry and eager to offend. I felt bad for her because she had no help.
If she even suspects you of using AI you get a zero, tests are marked very harshly especially the essay components. Still did good but class average for first 2 test was 60% so not a bird course whatsoever.
I took the course is Spring 25. The average was 75%. Take her AI warnings seriously because you'll get a zero and be reported if you're caught. She tells you clearly it isn't a "bird course" but I think that's to scare people. Truth is it's an EASY course with minimal work. Provide details in your answers to prove you've watched the films.
Unfair marker, not recommended
For the first test, the class average is 71% and 30 students got 90s. I got 93%. So far so good! I don't think you can fail this class unless you get caught using AI.
Very unhelpful to her students, never responds to any communication
This is a great class, though you DO have to study and watch the films. The professor is quick, professional and transparent. She publishes test statistics and the class average in fall term has been above 75% for both tests. Nothing to complain about here other than that I wish we had live tutorials to discuss the movies.
Amazing prof and course! If you genuinely take the time to do the readings and watch the films you will do excellent. You can tell she cares about students success and she just wants everyone to show that they watched the films. There's only 3 tests and weekly discussion posts (graded for completion).
Good professor. I didn't do any readings and still got an A. As long as you watch the movies (I even watched some in 1.5x speed) you'll be fine. It seems tough to get an A+ but I'm fine with my A. I watched the movies last minute to be honest but Dr Mitu Sengupta is a fair marker.
You literally only have to watch the movies to get an A- or A. That's all they care about. I agree that it's harder to get an A+
Watch out for the second test. I did bad because they were boring films I couldn't get through. There are so many great films that could be covered in the course but we had to watch Beans and Ararat just because they are Canadian.
