Was hard to pay attention to. Many times not clear in her speaking. Tests were nothing like the homework or lecture notes. Homework super easy. Says book is not required but many tests involve information solely from the book and not in the notes or covered on homework. Had a good heart. offers a lot of extra credit, not clear on what it goes to
Class seems confusing, but the tests are fairly easy. Make sure to take advantage of the two hw attempts to cushion your grade with 100%. Extra credit bumped me up from B+ to A so make sure to go to class!!! Really cares about students doing well but can be timid and sometimes hard to follow. A lot is taught that isn't essential for HW or tests.
Her lectures are very boring but attendance is required because of in class participation questions which is 10% of final grade. Hard to understand at times due to accent. Class average on first test was 65%
Very hard to understand due to the accent. Lectures are very boring.
Very hard to follow, English isn't the greatest. Very quiet when lecturing, often looses most of the class. Uses Top Hat almost every lecture.
Hard to understand, information on tests is not similar to lecture or homework content
I cant understand a single word she says. I had to learn everything on Khan Academy.
She isn't that bad. You'll need to work hard on finding out how to look at previous homework problems, top hat questions, and you'll do perfectly fine and her having bad averages means we get more points anyways.
She's really a pretty easy prof. Lectures can be boring but she's passionate about the material. Attendance is required for Top Hat points. All homework is on Blackboard and you get 2 attempts at the exact same questions. She gives TONS of review materials for midterms and most of the questions are identical to those on the homework/review.
As an international student, her English is a little hard to understand but not that bad. Her lecture is clear. Not much homework. She gives materials to review before exam and those are very useful. Exams are not hard as her lecture materials. Overall, easy class.
Yes she is very hard to understand when it comes to lecturing. The class understanding would be better if midterms were slip into multiple exams. Top Hat heavy! I would recommend choosing a different professor if possible!
she needs to stop showing her baby pictures and she needs to stop talking about her pregnancy so much. I don't see how talking about labour pain is relevant to Econ
Don't bother buying the book. All exams were from the study guides and you get two attempts on the homework. Whole class is cuved, so if the whole class does bad you're more likely to get a better grade. Fairly easy as long as you study the study guides. She gives partial credit even if Tophat is wrong.
I gave Miyoung's class a three for difficultly, only because she tends to be hard to understand during class. If you read the book to the point where you understand the material the class shouldn't be too bad, but who actually wants to read the book? The test are very similar to her reviews; however, she tends to trick you by switching words around
I would say that Miyoung Oh's biggest issue based on my rating would be the language barrier as someone that has never had to deal with that and being new to college I found that it may have been the hardest class I have ever taken. The material was not hard to understand but you better bet that you will be reading the textbook.
Very hard to understand and generally not a good learning environment.
Really didn't care for her and her teaching style. Tests were very hard if you didn't understand the material and not very clear in her slides and lecture. Wouldn't recommend taking her class again at all.
Every single homework question (and extra credit) answer the entire semester is both in the back of the book, and online if you just copy and paste the question into your search bar. 70% of the test questions are from the study guide, 15% from homework 15% from tophat (both in the book). This includes the final. Read the book yourself and you'll A.
I took Econ 101 with Ms. Oh last semester. She's honestly not that bad. Homework isn't very difficult, and as long as you study for the exams, you can easily get a good grade. Most students just don't seem to put in enough effort.
Lectures can be a little hard to understand due to her accent. If you go in with even the most basic knowledge of economics, you really don't need them anyway (except maybe for top hat). Test questions come directly from the homework. I never used my book. Study the homework questions for an easy A.
She's not very good at explaining the content in class. TopHat is used almost everyday and you don't have to buy the book, but I personally thought it was very helpful to have. Make sure you understand how to do the hw problems before you take the tests.
I love Oh. Basically you're graded on in-class activities, homework on Blackboard once a week, exams, and some extra credit on tophat! She gives out practice tests with like 50 questions each chapter, and those are the same questions on the exams. 33 questions for each exam and 60 for final. Study class activities and practice tests and you're fine
I had a hard time keeping up in lecture but she had in class activites and uses tophat almost everyday. She provides practice tests before exams DO THESE she copy and pastes a large portion of the questions on the exam. Totally saved my grade
I had no problems with her
Tests are easy, same as her review exams. She is really hard to understand and her lectures are boring so make sure u try to pay attention. She has lots of extra credit though.
She wasn't the best professor but she was far from the worse. The lectures are really boring but the tests are easy. She gives you practice tests to use to study, and she takes questions from them to make the test so you should definitely do those. All in all, she needs improvement but it's definitely a passable class if you put in the time
Just take the class with her, you wont regret it
Miyoung is such a nice professor. Yet, the class is really hard. There is a lot of notes and I recommend printing the notes out to fill them in prior to the lecture. There are 3 tests and a final. Each test gets harder and harder, but she does drop the lowest of the 3 tests at the end of the semester. The book is only used a couple of times for hwk
Miyoung is an okay professor. Her lectures are really boring and are at a super slow pace. Hard to understand really anything going on, its pretyy much a repeat of the same thing every day. Tests and homework are easy, all you need to do is look up the concepts and learn them yourself. Not a tough class at all
Worst lecturer I've ever seen. From this semester, she cannnot allow us to drop one of the exam result. You have to take three exam and one final. Total is 4 and every week, you have to take online quiz homework. Not easy to understand her pronunciation as well.
Language barrier makes things hard. She doesn't use common American knowledge, and there are too many answers, so if you think a common sense answer is correct, you're wrong.
I enjoyed her personality, but I had a hard time learning anything in this class. I took ECON101 to fill a major requirement. I would probably try to take it with someone else if I was to have to take it again.
Extra credit is offered in almost every lecture. This professor did not post lecture notes online so it would be useful to attend lecture. Strongly against using electronic devices in class. Does not curve any exams or the class at all.
Rough class that should've been easy.
Miyoung is a great professor. Very clear on what she expects and gives you the test questions prior to the exams. Make sure to utilize the reviews she sends out! She also gives many extra credit opportunities. Her accent is difficult to get past in the beginning, but once you get past that the class is a breeze.
Rough...
Tells you what will be on the test
Miyoung is a great professor. She makes it easy to pay attention to lectures. Every question on the tests you have seen before. Pay attention to the study guides and in class questions. She likes to award people for going to class by giving extra credit.
Miyoung is a great professor at heart... and that's it. Her lectures are boring and she has no spacing while presenting from a powerpoint, so she rushes through slides that you write for and spends forever on slides that are useless. She tries to be funny but it doesn't always work out. She also does have an accent but it wasn't an issue for me.
Miyoung's lectures can be boring but usually have quality content. She rushes her slides sometimes. She's a nice and funny professor with a bit of an accent. She makes the content super easy to understand in class, but outside I really had to look online for answers to stuff because the concepts were beyond the teaching. Exams are difficult.
It is not difficult to pass Miyoung's class. Show up, look over the practice problems before the test (the most important part), and go take the test. Most of this class could be considered participation. She has an accent, but a little bit of context takes out any confusion. Miyoung was a very pleasant professor, and I enjoyed her class.
Miyoung has a bit of an accent and her lectures can be very dull. However, she gives out a lot of extra credit (we could get up to 6.5%) if you show up and participate. Her tests aren't that bad as long as you do the practice exams. Also the online homework answers are on quizlet. Overall, put in a little bit of effort and you will get an A.
There is a lot of extra credit opportunities; if you go to the lectures and you do all of the pop quizzes you will get extra credit for those along with TopHat and something else too. The thing I hate most is that you can't have electronics so taking notes by hand gets really tedious & she goes through the slides way too fast so you miss a lot
Professor Oh is a nice person, but she is not a good teacher. She presents from a power point and goes very quickly, so it is hard to write everything down. She does offer extra credit if you attend the lectures, which is nice, and if you meet with her after class or during her office hours she is very eager to help and answer any questions.
Her lectures can be dull and she goes through notes quickly which is hard to keep up with since she doesn't let you use your computer. I would say about 90% of the questions on tests are all either seen as examples in class already or are on the practice quizzes which I highly recommend taking. I personally never opened my textbook and did fine.
I had her for both microeconomics and macroeconomics but she was much better in micro. Topics were explained in depth but in macroeconomics I had to do a lot of on my own leaning. Overall, weekly assignments are very easy but exams can be difficult as you get more into the course.
Miyoung is nice but she tries too hard to get a LECTURE HALL to participate in class discussion. She goes through the presentation slides way too fast to take notes, and if you print her notes off they are poorly organized and you'll end up having 3 pages with the same graph on it. She talks really fast and is hard to understand.
Major Culture issue and test as exams are based off of her personal experiences not off of the text book she cant speak english fully so it is hard to understand her
for anyone who has never taken economics before in high school, DO NOT TAKE HER Ive taken economics in high school so this was a beeze, is easier than high school as long as you did satisfactory. She literally gives similar paractice tests before a test and its almost the same if you practiced properly. She has So many extra Cr.
I have not taken any economics classes up until this one, and I had a very difficult time through out the class. Miyoung's lectures are boring, and only skim the surface of topics that you are assessed on with homework and exams. On top of that, she has a bit of an accent. Hearing new concepts from someone who can't speak clear English is hard.
Miyoung Oh is honestly not that bad of a teacher. But the way she has class set up is terrible. She uses an online discussion board you have to pay for that contributes nothing to your learning, yet its 10% of your grade. On the plus side, she gives a pretty good amount of extra credit for participation in lecture.
Miyoung is a nice person and means well, but she is not a good teacher. Her lectures don't make a lot of sense and it can be hard to take notes. The exams were hard and don't follow the lecture well. We had to post on an online discussion board that we had to pay for, and it was 10% of the grade. I would take a different professor if possible.
Dont take Miyoung. Shes nice, but her lectures are not adequate. They are very dry and dont cover everything. Her textbook readings are very long and dry as well. Very difficult to raise your grade at all if you fall behind. She speaks clearly tho and is charming. Will help with homework if you come to office hours. Tests are very difficult tho.
I had this class online, not all lectures were recorded by Miyoung, but her lectures were really good, she went more in depth than other profs who uploaded the videos. She did a great job explaining the material. Tests are tough, but the worst test score gets dropped which is nice. Lots of extra credit too. I recommend Miyoung over other profs!
Bottom line for this ECON101 class: Exams are HARD and homework is a breeze. You can spend about 30 minutes a week on this class and finish all the homework. She offers a significant amount of extra credit opportunities, but the exams are very difficult. Study a lot for the short answer portion of exams, typically those parts carry a lot of weight.
I'm an econ major so take this however you want. People saying this class was hard must not have participated - especially this year with it online. She had every single test answer available in practice tests, and the short answer questions were identical to our extra credit assignment the day before. Not getting an A this year is ridiculous.
Passed me with a 59 so that's good I guess but the class was crazy hard compared to people that took 301 with other professors.
Professor Oh's lectures are boring, and often fail to cover the content that is assessed in homework and exams. The online homework is severely disconnected from what Professor Oh lectures about. Professor Oh is very disconnected from her students and lacks an understanding of how to run a course. Very difficult for a 3 credit entry level course.
Can hardly understand her, and lectures are very unorganized.
Miyoung is a joke. I can’t understand what concepts she is trying to cover in class because she wanders so much. She simply does not know how to teach a lecture bigger than 30 people. If she was a ring leader of a circus, I would give her a 10/10 but unfortunately she is a college professor and is not good at her job.
Her lectures are the hardest thing to understand and she doesn't give you time to ask questions. She talks nonstop for an hour and 20. Her exam are harder than they need to be and set you up for failure. 100% don't recommend taking this class with her.
She gives out questions multiple times per lecture that are worth participation and correctness and most of the time the questions dont make any sense. She always writes notes on the screen and her handwriting is atrocious. The exams are a complete joke, you get the 45 minutes to answer 35 questions and the class average ends up being 40-60%.
She honestly makes Iowa state look bad and is discouraging to anyone actually wanting to learn Econ.
Professor Oh is a great lecturer. Very interactive & cares about her students. Homework & exams can be tricky, but if you study the materials she gives you really closely, you should be good.
Great instructor that cares about her students and listens to their feedback. Gives lots of extra credit opportunities. Lectures can be a bit overwhelming but they are in a large lecture hall so that's part of it.
She gives SO MUCH extra credit it's honestly hard to fail the class. She is a decent lecturer does not read off slides the entire time, which is cool, and literally gives exam questions in class if you go. Just attend class pay a little bit of attention and you will be fine in the class.
Started out the semester rough but she really helped make sure everyone would succeed. She had exams boosters if the exam average was below 70% and tons of extra credit throughout the semester. The exams are tough, but it is easy to get a good grade if you put in the effort.
Lots of extra credit so I ended up with 101.86% but I definitely didnt understand all the material. If you want a good grade, Miyoung is the way to go, but if you want to understand the material with minimal extra studying, pick someone else. She is a funny person and genuinely loves econ, but her teaching method is different from my learningmethod
Impossible to understand and tests are insanely difficult. Test averages 50-55%. Free response is impossible the tests as she does not teach anything worthwhile in class despite giving out attendance points...only good thing going for her is LOTS of extra credit given out to boost everyone's horrible grades. WORST PROFESSOR EVER NOT EVEN KWAN CHOI
Professor Oh was literally so confusing. The entire class was structured so bad and you never know what actual grade you're going to receive because she changes the "extra credit" and curve so much. The only good is she dropped an exam and then basically curved all my exams to A's because the class average was so bad on every single test.
Miyoung is a great professor for Econ 301 if you were confident in 207. If that's the case you will have no problems in the class. Lectures got dry at times but they are important to go to. She is a caring and funny person. The exams are structured exactly like the practice exams and you get to use your notes on them.
Dr. Oh is such a sweet lady when you know her out of class. That being said, if you are not already experienced in Econ, be ready to teach yourself a lot of the material because her lectures don't do a great job of teaching the material. She offers a ton of extra credit to those willing to participate. Overall 4/5.
Miyoung Oh started the semester as my favorite teacher and after 4 weeks, was my least favorite. Her teaching style was next to awful. Many concepts on the exams are not even covered in class. I was extremely disappointed in Miyoung, along with the quality and quantity of information I took away from this course.
Professor Oh definitely cares about her students but her lectures are awful. Her exams are extremally hard. I think that the reason her lectures are so hard to understand is because of the poor use of slides and jumping around. If I were to take econ again I would Avoid at all costs.
Lectures were dry but she made the exam like the practice exam and that brought my grade from an F to an A. Do the work and you will pass
Miyoung tries to make the class engaging and fun, and she does offer a lot of extra credit. However, her exams are very difficult and it is solely based on memorization. The class consists of many graphs and memorizing answers.
she cares but she just kind of sucks at teaching.
She is pretty energetic and funny sometimes She does lots of extra credit questions during lectures and some of them are exam questions Her tests are very hard and the averages are low but because everyone does so bad in her class she offers a ton of extra credit and curves the grades a lot at the end of the sem
Her lectures were all over the place hard to follow as part of it were on computers doing LC and just listening or hearing her talk. Her test are not bad as long as you do the test run and the practice exams on each module as the questions are the same or similar. She offers 5% of extra credit on random things and 20% back on exam corrections.
Dr. Oh is very kind and wants all of her students to succeed. She is very accessible outside of class. She offers a lot of extra credit, which you should definitely do, because her tests are very hard. She sometimes struggles to communicate clearly, which can be frustrating, but she is very accommodating for the most part.
no curve on test exam average is a D
Lectures often do not cover most of the material on exams or assignments, so you'll have to teach yourself a lot of the class. She does not stop to answer questions in class either and will talk about other unrelated topics. Exams are extremely difficult and the class average is consistently very low, which is indicative of her poor teaching.
She spends about a third of every lecture calling out like one or two people for talking, which just wastes all 300 other people's time. Nothing is actually learned because when she does teach, it's irrelevant information. Exams are extremely hard and the average is always low. Lots of extra credit tho.
Miyoung is nice enough but she is simply not good at actually teaching. Exams are super hard for no reason and it's super discouraging to anyone wanting to learn econ, especially because she is the only ECON102 professor and this is an entry level course.
This entire course was genuinely one of the most frustrating experiences of my life. Her style of lecture was very strange and all over the place. Exams were extremely hard because most of it was never covered in class and the studying materials provided were extremely unhelpful.
Idk if I am just dumb, or if this is just way too hard.
Her exam average is a 60 or less every time so if that doesn't say enough idk what will. She doesn't prepare her students and just hopes for the best. nice woman but absolutely awful professor. Is not easy to communicate with either. Also puts surprise topics in her exams and causes people to fail cuz of it. honestly laughable at times
Professor Oh was the worst professor I have ever had in my 3 years of college. She needs to be considered for probation as the lectures were a disaster, and the exams contained information we did not touch on in class once. Please stay away from her if you can. I put a lot of work into studying, but I still get 70% and below on the exams.
Lectures are not organized at all. Reviews are not held at the convenience of students and are not relevant to what is being tested. Exam averages for her sections are 60% or below, and most people leave lectures wondering why they came to class. Gives lots of easy extra credit to inflate grades and to negate her teaching neglect.
Worst professor ever. Unorganized, doesn't know how to teach or use Canvas. Lectures are a jumbled mess that are impossible to follow. Tests are unnecessarily hard, and lectures don't help you in any way to prepare. It is baffling to me that Miyoung still has a job at Iowa State.
Nice professor, but lectures are hard to follow. She gives you a lot of extra credit that will help your grade. Test questions are questions you have seen if you study and can memorize answers.
BEWARE!!!. This class has been the bane of my existence, the average score on the final exam is a 50 with zero information about a curve. The extra credit is a joke, it barely boosts your grade and is not applied until the end so your ending grade is a complete mystery until its too late.
If you hate yourself I recommend this course. This professor does an incredible job at draining all of my joy and energy and still having a 50% average on the final.
The unfortunate truth of the matter is that Prof. Oh's Korean accent makes learning incredibly difficult during her already haphazard lectures. There's a huge disconnect between lecture material, in-class activities, exam prep/study guide content, homework, and what's on the actual exams. Cryptic extra credit policies are frustrating too.
Econ 102 itself is not incredibly difficult. That being said get ready to learn it on your own because lectures are of no use. Its going to take a ton of work outside of class to get a good grade. However she did curve the tests and final and gave tons of extra credit, so it definitely is hard to fail with so many opportunities.
Worst professor ever. Never answers emails and will come up to you in lectures no matter where you sit. Also no phones allowed or talking. All info is shared in class so if you don't go you won't know a thing. Go to SI it's the only reason I passed. All in all DO NOT RECOMMEND
I really like this teacher! She very obviously cares about her classes and she tries really hard to involve the students in learning. She's a fair teacher, and for the people that do study and turn up, this class is rewarding! I never found economics easy, but I've genuinely learned a lot from this teacher.
When I first read Prof. Oh's ratings I was dreading the class because her ratings are overwhelmingly bad, but she is honestly not bad at all. She has tons of extra credit opportunities, Homework where it's physically impossible to get anything other than 100, and 2 attempts on an exam with 2 sheets of notes. Her english isn't a problem, Its decent
Professor Oh has an accent which could affect learning for some, but she is a caring professor and wants you to succeed. Half of Tophats get dropped, one exam, and one HW. 4 pages of notes and 2 attempts allowed on all exams.
Lectures are hard to follow, but with Unstuckstudy and dedication, you can get through this class. The professor is nice, and the extra credit helps boost your grade.
Great and caring professor, lectures are kind of hard to follow and you really need to spend time outside to make sure you understand the information. Lowest exam score was dropped and multiple attempts so she was very forgiving. Her accent can be hard to understand and she was constantly asking for participation.
A little bit hard to understand. One of the worst professors i've ever had she's not engaging at all the class is boring she just goes through the slides and that's about it.
She is a nice person but she is a horrible instructor. Her lectures are all over the place and make no ense. Can't even study for exams because her "study guides" have nothing to do with what's actually on the exams. Exam average is 60% or less. If you can, avoid her lectures for your own sanity. also no make-up policy, you just take the 0%.
Miyoung's teaching is poor, and her exams are unrelated to the study guides, with class averages around 50%. SI sessions were the only help. While she offers extra credit, it doesn't make up for her terrible teaching. Take someone else for this class.
Great person, horrible professor. Tests are unrelated to study guides completely and TA sessions give very little insight. Exams are barely curved and the extra credit opportunities are slim. Lectures are dense and hard to understand. Register this class with another professor.
Miyoung is an awful professor. She never curves the exams even though the average is 60%. Her lectures don't teach you anything because you can't understand her. Top Hat questions are in class everytime. Go to the SI sessions to actually learn material. Do the homework and get at least 60 on tests and you will get a B at least.
Lectures are very difficult to follow, and content is often skipped over, so you pretty much have to teach yourself or go to SI. Don't bother with the study guides as half the stuff on them won't be on the exams. The tophats in class are also graded seemingly at random, as even if you get them all correct, they will be graded as if they weren't
Go for the tophats, learn on your own time, read the slides, it is all she does. You go through the material very quickly, which makes it hard to gain a thorough understanding. Exams are tough, but she sometimes curves them when the class average is below a 60%. Overall, if there is an option for another professor, I would take them.
