Dr. Wetzler is really nice and helpful, just wish he didn't spread out his lecture all over the place. It's possible to get confused in his class but just keep track with him and GO to his review sessions. They did help alot.
He tends to skip over small concepts that he thinks are not important, which confuses a lot of students. It's hard to understand what exactly is going on in class, but he offers a lot of one on one and help and review sessions. Making an A is definitely possibly, but truly understanding what you're doing isn't
Dr. Wetzler is extremely helpful, just go and talk to him. He's very funny & articulate and can communicate with his students. While his lectures are not strictly by Smith's lecture guide book, he covers the material in a way that makes it easier to learn. Pay attention to the little "unimportant" things, they tend to be extra credit questions.
If you have a hard time at chemistry and aren't very comfortable with it, I wouldn't recommend Wetzler. He is not a bad professor by any means, but he is a bit disorganized and hard to follow sometimes. He is very willing to help if you don't understand something though, but sometimes he will go off on tangents answering questions.
I really like Dr. Wetzler. He was a little scatterbrained at the beginning of the semester but he's come a long way. He's very helpful and nice. On top of that he actually makes organic make at least a little bit of sense, which is quite a feat.
Modi is a fantastic guy and I believe to be a great teacher. His teaching was a little scattered in the beginning but he got a LOT better and was always clear about what you needed to know. He was ALWAYS available to help you and learned everyone's name because he really cares how you do. GO TO OFFICE HOURS. Highly recommend him.
Dr. Wetzler was a good professor who really explained things well. He have a TON of grade-boosting help, with group quizzes (that he would help you get the right answer on in-class), take home quizzes, and bonus points on the test. I'd tell anyone to take his classes over the other Ochem profs.
Modi is the man. Extremely helpful if you go to office hours and genuinely cares about his students. Occasionally rants about random things, but he knows his O-chem and is easy to learn from. Take him! You will have to work for an A.
Dr. Wetzler is great! Very friendly and very willing to help. Go to office hours. Tries to learn all his students' names. Hard subject matter but if you go to class, somewhat pay attention, do some of the HW and go to office hours, easy B, possible A.
He's really nice and understanding and if you make a bad grade he will try to work with you to improve your later grades. He does tend to get off-topic in class so either go to SI and office hours, or study the book. He sometimes gives free points for attendance which helps grades. Make sure to go to every class as he recognizes students quickly...
Professor goes on millions of tangents in class. Doesn't exactly tell class what to expect on exams. Masteringchem homework has little to do with what he teaches. Gives minimal examples in class. Provides extra credit for attendance sometimes. Might as well teach yourself and go to class for extra credit. Cool guy though.
WORST TEACHER EVER!He never returned anything graded. My class and the other section took a test before Thanksgiving and we have yet to get it back, it's Christmas break. He is scatter brained beyond belief. Laziest professor I have ever had. DO NOT take his class. Ask anyone who had him Fall 2013.
Modi is a very nice man. He genuinely cares about the success of his students. His tests are easier than other OChem professors, which help in terms of exam scores before the final, but he did very little to prepare for the ACS final at the end of year, where everyone went blindly into it not knowing their last 2 quiz grades and last test grade.
He really cares about his student's grades, and he even makes the effort to know the names of all the people in the class. His tests are fairly easier than other professors, but he will make you very frustrated with grades. Going in to the final, we had two quizzes and an exam that he hadn't even graded yet. It takes him literally a month to grade
Dr. Wetzler is a very nice guy. He gets to know the students in his class. However, his lectures are not helpful one bit. The first quiz I went into, made a 60, just reviewing his notes. For the second quiz, I read the textbook, and I made a 100. Reading the textbook is a must. With Dr. Wetzler you do not learn as much as other teachers.
He glosses over some of the basic topics, but if you study a bit you'll do alright. He grades very fairly and is extremely friendly, he'll be happy to help you out if you ask. GO TO CLASS. I didn't pay attention much but he does give extra credit randomly to everyone who showed up on a particular day, especially near holidays.
Not organized, taught things that conflicted with the book, and seems lost at the board. Took a different prof for orgo 2 and it was worlds better and I learned more material. Take a professor, not a lecturer.
Dr. Wetzler truly means well, but needs to redo some of his teaching methods. He does provide random opportunities for extra credit just for coming class and will curve exams. He takes forever to grade things and give them back and can go off topic during lectures.
Knows his stuff, not always super clear. Funny guy, but be ready to connect the dots on your own.
They finally decided he couldn't teach organic and made him teach another class. Tells you how bad it is.
Although Dr. Wetzler does jump around a lot in his lectures, he is very knowledgeable on the subject and will stop for a student if they have a question. Homework grades are easy, but the homework is necessary, and expect to be read and study at home. Funny guy, does sometimes go on tangents
Dr. Wetzler made Organic Chemistry very entertaining. I had him for an eight am and his class always woke me up. Saying that the class is not the easiest you have to read on your own. The study guides are helpful, but you cannot just memorize them you have to understand why things happen. He goes out of his way for his students.
Wetzler was amazing! He turned the most feared class for undergrad science majors into my favorite subject.
Had to work hard, but got an A. He's pretty awesome, and really gets to know the students, even in a huge lecture hall. Getting to know him and sitting near the front will probably be beneficial to your grade. The tests aren't awful but aren't easy-going to SI is a HUGE help. Gives extra credit- mostly based on attendance.
Dr. Wetzler is a bit sporadic and will go on at least one tangent during each lecture. However, he is very good at making sure you are prepared to do well on his tests. Tests are multiple choice!
Dr. Wetzler is one of those good guys and bad teachers. Teach yourself if you want to survive. He's constantly telling you about how stupid and pointless this class is... seriously. It's nice that he "gets it", but that doesn't help when it's test time. At least there's extra credit and he's a pretty lenient grader, drops some quizzes and tests
Would NOT recommend this class. He is nice, but extremely unorganized and scatter brained. Did not even know my final grade going into the final exam because he would not update grades for over a month. He explains simple topics in really confusing ways. Likes to get off topic during lecture all the time and talk about how stupid the class is.
Wetzler is a nice dude, but an awful teacher. He won't respond to emails or update grades very often. I had no idea what my grade was going into the final. He constantly goes off topic, and I honestly learned more from the book than his class. He does give extra credit randomly though, but attendance is not mandatory.
Organic chemistry is a very hard class and Dr. Wetzler knows what he's talking about for the most part. If you don't understand things during class, you're probably not going to be able to figure it out on your own, so make sure you read and attend PAL sessions/office hours. If you go to class, he gives extra credit. Good luck!
Dr Wetzler seems to be a very nice guy, but his class did not help me learn organic chemistry. He constantly goes off topic and he spends more time in lecture talking about how stupid the class is than actually teaching the material. He gave lots of extra credit and is fairly lenient when grading. He's also bad at posting grades in a timely manner.
You have to do a lot of on you own reading and basically teaching yourself organic. If you go to class he will put some reactions on the board that will be on the test but then he will also get off topic for about 20 minutes afterwards. Tests are every other week and 13 MC questions. Sounds easy but can be very tricky.
If you are willing to apply yourself, which you should be if you're taking organic chemistry, you will not regret taking professor Wetzler. You will likely have a new sense of appreciation for organic chemistry or science in general by the end of the semester.
Dr. Wetzler is about giving people credit when they earn it. Go to class, as he appreciates those who are always attending and will help you. He appreciates people who are dedicated in the class and willing to make the effort. His office hours aren't long but very helpful. He had 10 or 20 point extra credit, depending on what assignment you did.
Wetzler is a very nice man and it's clear he knows his stuff. However, it doesn't seem like he knows how to make it understandable for students. He over-complicates things that should be a lot easier to comprehend. The online homework was difficult. Essentially just be prepared to teach yourself orgo on your own because the lectures are confusing.
Dr. Wetzler will not teach you organic chemistry. Since this year's switch to common exams for organic chemistry, Dr Wetzler's sections have performed the worst out of all the organic chemistry classes. But instead of trying to adapt and improve his teaching, Wetzler spends the majority of class whining about the exams and other professors.
Dr. Wetzler likes to tell stories. I'm pretty sure I can tell you more about random stories he has told us than I could about Organic Chemistry. He teaches very confusingly and does not make things very clear.
Wetzler is a nice guy and you can tell he is very intelligent, but he makes you seem dumb sometimes when he says if you dont understand this youll probably fail. He doesnt really explain things and gives a vague summary of the text. I highly recommend reading the textbook and going to tutor sessions because you will learn little just from him.
Barely anyone goes to class anymore because either they already dropped the class or feel theres no point in going since he doesn't teach the material well at all. The only organic ive learned is from the book and online tutoring. He puts examples on the board and has no slideshows/notes we can follow by. Youll be lost if you dont read before class
This professor uses a chalk board to write every word thought of. He goes off topic so often that it doesn't even relate to OCHEM, highly recommend any other professor if you actually want to be prepared for any exam or moving forward in this field. The only reason I did well in this class is because I worked my butt off and went to other lectures
Wetzler is a great guy, but he may not be the best lecturer if you're trying to only go to class and not study on your own time. His office hours are great to go too though because he will explain things. However, he does spend A LOT of time telling you how awful he thinks it is that we have to learn certain material.. Great guy, not great lecturer
He's very nice and cares the subject, but spends more time giving history lessons and complaining about the orgo department than actually teaching. He only uses the chalk board during class and writes examples with no explanation of how he got the answer. You have to teach yourself everything and his sections do way worse on every test (by 15 pts)
Honestly, if you're looking for a pointless lecture class where you have to teach yourself everything and become a fiend for other professor's notes, Wetzler is your guy.
Wetzler, bless his soul, has a great heart and cares about his students. His teaching; however, was so unhelpful that I chose to go to a different professor for the rest of the semester and I went up two letter grades. His lectures are so unorganized and he even forgot to cover material that will be on a test and had to be reminded to cover it.
Professor Wetzler is very encouraging and inspirational and obviously knows organic chem very well but he struggles at teaching it in a way that's understandable. He is not good at responding to emails. He does give an easy visual assignment at the end of the semester that will help your grade. His homework doesn't have a due date but its not easy.
Professor modi was not a good professor at all. half way through everyone stopped going or dropped because his lectures never covered the material. he was always off topic and/or ranting about how Orgo isnt taught right at clemson. to even to be able to pass the class i had to sit in other professors lectures . i highly suggest anyone but him.
This was the worst class I have ever taken. He doesn't teach, and is not available outside of class. Organic chemistry is already hard material and he made it 10 times worse. He's a nice guy but super unorganized and not helpful. DONT DO IT
Dr. Wetzler is nice and approachable. However, he spent more time giving motivational speeches in class than actually teaching. I had to rely completely on my textbook (his notes are useless) and youtube videos. I have had 3 classes with my new Orgo2 professor this semester and I have learned much more in those classes than I ever did in his class.
I have yet to have a great chemistry professor at Clemson, Modi was no exception. There are no lecture notes online and the only notes in class are confusing and all over the place. Class is useless, just read the textbook its your only good resource. Nice guy but just doesnt give his students the resources to succeed.
3 tests and final count for 80% of grade - good teacher though who is really into the material and makes sure you know exactly what will be on the test. Clarifies anything that will be on test that he didn't teach on the day before test - would take him again if I could
He doesn't care about his students, and messes up on the homework and quizzes given all the time! If you get him, don't run away, SPRINT.
What he has in character he lacked in teaching skills. Wetzler uses his teaching time to rant and barely go over the concepts then just tells you to read the book. I spent hours upon HOURS reading the book just to watch the other professors give their students easy to use supplemental notes and worksheets. Save yourself the stress avoid Wetzler!
Okay this class is the hardest class I've ever taken. Some people find organic easy but for me it was wicked difficult. Modi is great personality wise but he gets WAY off track 24/7. Read the book or you won't understand. Attendance isn't mandatory but I guarantee that if you don't go to class you'll fail, unless you're a wiz at orgo.
Most of these negative reviews are inaccurate or are exaggerated. I have not had a more accommodating professor since I've been at Clemson. He is entertaining and teaches effectively. Yes, you have to read the textbook occasionally, but what he tells you to read never takes more than 30 mins. Its Orgo, you're going to have to put some work in.
Prof. Wetzler is sweet but goes on tangents 24/7. He only teaches surface level material, so tests seem impossible. His own quizzes/hw are easy (and have EC) but they don't prepare you for the common exam. I'm a good student and did bad. Most difficult class because the prof didn't teach. Use Dr. Smith's proton guru if you take Wetzler.
Wetzler is the sweetest man ever but is the reason why I have to retake orgo. I learned from the first test to study proton guru which are OTHER professors notes and had to teach myself because he gives very basic lectures and reading the text book can not even save you.
He really cares about your success!! He took student feedback throughout the semester and really improved. He began to make practice tests and study guides which were super helpful. He's funny, focuses on test material, and his lectures were great, though he could be scatter-brained at times. Be ready to do work outside of class if you want an A!
If you have the option not to take him for orgo, DONT. He is a very nice guy who cares about his students, however, his teaching if awful. All of his lectures are very surface level and unorganized. I used another professors lectures notes, and managed to get an A. He did round grades at the end of the semester though, which was a big bonus.
he is really terrible at teaching the course. the class he goes off topic too much and you never never anything. he gives very basic concepts in class and the hard stuff you never practice. the other professors gives worksheets and ways to learn the class better. highly suggest anyone but modi. he also will get his own questions wrong too on tests.
I had Modi for orgo survery and it was an easy A if you put in the effort. If you are looking for a normal 2230/2240 class I would advise against him but hes great for the basic level stuff. Wants you to get an A
Just rants all class and goes over like one problem. His class always had the lowest test average.
A lot of people complain about his lectures because he does rant during them. If you learn by lecture then this is not the professor for you. However, his homework assignments are what allowed me to get one of the highest grades on the second (hardest) test when the class average was an F. He puts the time in and if you do the work, you can pass.
He genuinely cares about the students and the material. He doesn't like the curriculum and the way he has to teach the class, but he is good at it.
Wetzler is a super nice and approachable guy but if you actually need to pass the class avoid him. He gives the bare minimum in lectures and his homework assignments are much easier than the test. I have had to use another teacher's notes and content to somewhat understand the course. If you can avoid him I HIGHLY recommend it.
Cares a lot about his students, and very funny. However, not good at explaining concepts. Told us "my job is not to teach you, but to give you self-confidence". So he's nice, but doesn't really teach. He wants you to succeed though, and drops a lot of low HW grades. Just doesn't prepare you very well for the difficult common exams.
Wetzler really cares about his students and will take time out of his day to explain difficult concepts and make sure that we feel ready for tests. He DOES NOT like the orgo department... at all... and will complain about them (a lot). He is also rather disorganized with posting homework and study materials but overall a kind guy
He cares a lot about his students and makes it evident. Youre not going to find an orgo Professor that has a really good grade distribution so its at least nice to have a professor that cares. He can get off topic, but is a funny dude. Definitely go to office hours if you have questions. Great at explaining problems if he was unclear in lecture.
Modi is a great professor, he kept class entertaining and made difficult concepts easy to understand. Orgo is not going to be an easy class with any professor, but Modi gave out lots and lots of practice, and as long as you read the text book along with the lectures and do ALL the practice he provides, this class is very easy to pass
Modi is the BEST. He explained things in a very different way which was helpful to my ADHD brain. It made me remember things more. He 's one of the rare college profs that genuinely cares about his students. He learns your name and does everything in his power to help you -including going against the department when the common exam average was an F
Nicest professor I have had at Clemson. Super caring and really knows the content. Slides for class are super in detail and we go through them together. Attendance is not mandatory but please go to class! He is super kind and even brings breakfast for those that show up sometimes!!
To say that he is a hard teacher is unfair, simply because Chemistry is a hard class. If your looking for an easy class, your not gonna get it taking Chem. He is a good professor and an okay teacher. As far as grade boosts, his class is the best compared to other teachers. His quizzes are open note and you have unlimited attempts, unlike others.
Extremely kind and caring. Very little homework and lots of practice during lectures in class. iClicker is required. lots of online materials for your convenience.
Coach is easily one of the best professors I have ever had.He genuinely cares about his students and wants you to do well.He requires very little in his class, you'll have homework and quizzes but on both you have multiple attempts to complete and he gives you plenty of time to finish them.Attendance isn't required but if you go you'll do 10x better
If you're someone who just aces all tests, then coach is your guy. He's an extremely nice guy but gets his own questions wrong ALL the time & just spends half the class encouraging you instead of teaching,& when he does, it NEVER prepares u for the exams. I constantly went to multiple tutors, PAL sessions, and office hours, but it didn't help...
Modi is a great person who really seems to care about their student's mental health. Two weeks ago, I would have given Modi a 5/5. However, near the end of the semester & FINALS WEEK, he literally ghosted us. Did not respond to emails or give any resources or information about the final. He sent a message at 9:35pm the night before our 8am final...
Before finals week, I would have given him a 4/5 but the week before finals he yelled at us during our final class, that we sent him too many emails and the week before his final he did not answer one email from any of his students because he claimed to be "mad" at us. He sent a reminder and the exemption email less than 12 hours before the exam.
At the beginning of the year he preaches about how he cares about his students and their mental health. However, the week before finals he claims the class sent him so many "whiny emails" and didn't answer them. I did not know I exempted the final until the night before the final because he ghosted the entire class.
Dr. Wetzler was a super nice and approachable guy, but his lectures were simply not helpful. He rambled about mental health the entire class, so we rarely finished notes. When he is teaching, he often does the math in his head which made it difficult for me to learn. Homework/quizzes had unlimited attempts and were easy. Wouldn't recommend.
He is so ENCOURAGING and kindbut this man can't teachfor the life of him...After the first exam went very poorly I started going to office hours, private & small group tutoring, & PALsessions EVERY WEEK. I spent majority of my time studying for these exams despite coach himself not assigning much work. I failed. DO NOT TAKE HIM U WONT LEARN!!!
Coach is an extremely nice guy, but that's just it. I participated in everything possible in order to do well in this class, but it was no help due to Coach being so disorganized in teaching. He makes all problems himself, and they never are similar to the ones actually on exams. if you actually need to be taught, I do not recommend him whatsoever.
Dr.Wetzler AKA "Coach" was a great professor and helped make CH1010 enjoyable. Chemistry can definitely be tough at times, but his lectures and personality really helped me stay engaged throughout the semester. Additionally, Coach is one of the easiest people to talk to as he really understands what it's like to be a college student.
Coach Wetzler is an amazing person who truly cares about his students and their wellbeing. Unfortunately, the lectures were not as fantastic. It's obvious he knows a lot about the subjects he teaches, but the way he does so was very hard to follow. He uses a lot of analogies that just confused me more. It is a weed out class, so be prepared.
Prof. Wetzler is a very kind person who is very passionate about chemistry. But as a professor he is simply not it. It's as if it's his first time seeing the material when he lectures and makes so many mistakes. He uses analogies that don't make sense and he is very very sporadic and confusing in his already dense lectures. Take someone else
If you are a person that only has to take one gen chem class, I would highly suggest Dr. Wetzler. Beware he is...quirky but he is one of the only professors that ACTUALLY cares about his students, would start every class with a "Minute for mental heath." He cut out the BS out of learning materials and it is easy to get 100 on his quizzes.
I enjoyed Dr. Wetzler's class at the beginning of the semester, BUT he's very disorganized, causing him to post assignments late, move tests, start class late, etc. The assignments are fairly similar to the tests, but when he doesn't post anything on time, the class is frustrating. However, he's a nice guy and cares about his students.
Absolutely horrible man. Preaches mental health but as soon as something comes up its a problem. Seems nice at first. Memorizes everyone's names so you think he cares, really its just so he can tell if you're in class or not. So disorganized and moved exams literally days before. Do not take if you need any sort of mental/physical accommodations.
I had Dr. Wetzler for Orgo 1 in Fall of 2021, and I really don't understand the hate that he receives. He deeply cares about his students, so much so that he made it a point to memorize the names of all students sitting in the first few rows. His only downfall is that his teaching did not align well with the common exams, but I still did well.
