I really learned a lot from Mohammad!!! He is awesome!!
a life changing teacher and class. shifts and challenges all your beliefs.
The class I took from Mohammed was very compelling, and, yes, like everyone says, he'll change your mind about some things. The trouble I had was that his methods for doing that sometimes seemed very manipulative, and there's no point talking to him abou
Rather arrogant. He doesn't teach anthropology so much as his world view of things and his personal political theories.
awesome life changin class

he really has in interest in what he's teaching.
probably the best anthro prof in the country
Mohammad is absolutely fantastic. I had him a few years ago, and after several great instructors through university and grad school, he's still one that I revere. Yes, he has strong views, but he is rational and backs up his statements with logic and empirical data. He's just great!
Mohammed will open your consciousness to concepts you may not have recognized- and he doesn't sugarcoat. Be prepared! He does experiment with format and so you may have some difficulty with that as well as the large workload, deadlines, and time constraints- so you must be serious.
Brilliant. His politcs are spot-on. I love that he never had to use the (A) word. I would get an AA in his classes alone if I could.
BEST TEACHER EVER. not an easy class... but he's an amazing man. SCCC is luckey to have him. TAKE HIS CLASS.
he just looks crazy because you got crazy eyes in your head. he's a good man.
by far one of the most brilliant professors i have ever had.
The class is easy and Mohamed doesn't believe in testing.

i love mohammed.... he is my hero!!
ANT 202 the most perfect proffessor in entire WA. i LOVE his teaching style!!! HIs Grading is awesome!!! fair and square proffesor. if u have never had me take his class now!!
I loved this class, I loved this teacher!
loved it.
This class was fairly easy. Had to write alot of papers though. And weekly posts on the discussion board were somewhat a big part of the grade.
Blatant ideology masquerading as a social science class. Many of the left-leaning students at SCCC worship him--he simply reaffirms their beliefs. Seven weeks of anthropology were simply a warm-up to his real agenda: the evil inherent in the capitalist system. The outdated text was mildly interesting, and occasionally so were discussions.
This was the class that I was looking forward to this quarter. Instead it was filled with excessive far-leftist ideals. Their should be a much firmer warning concerning the content of this class, other then his horrendously understated proclamation on the first day. Far too much time was speant on non-cultural issues.
Great class, brilliant professor. Paper-intensive, but his teaching methods kept me engaged in the material so it was easy to stay on top of the workload. As for the controversial ideology, I'll take that over dry delivery any day. At least everyone seemed to have an opinion, which is more than I can say for most other courses I've taken.
Utterly, utterly great professor
Lots of busy work; little learning. I took his online sociology class and got a 4.0 without ever opening either dated and biased textbook. He has a blatant political agenda, but school shouldn't be about washing brains, it should be about opening them.
Mohammed is an amazing teacher. Be prepared to have your worldview expanded through his critical teachings.
Controversial teaching style that's refreshing in a lackadaisical world. High quality content. Emphesis on student accountability. He has definate thoughts, but he also encourages students to think for themselves. Highly recommended for either side of the political fence.
Mo assumes you want to be there to learn. Has high standards of classroom behavior. You must attend and keep up w/the reading. Lots of group work in the CSPMatrix. If you suspect that our socioeconomic system is destructive, wasteful, and oppressive, Mo will lead you to discover WHY it is.Does not brainwash, but makes you think.
I have never seen such a lasy teacher. I really hate him.
Mohammad isn't a tradtional teacher. If you don't want to work hard and step outside of your comfort zone than don't take his class. If you want to be challenged and learn some fascinating concepts than take his class.
Taxing, intriguing, fun and provoking. Not taking one of Dr. al-Madani's classes before completing your time at SCCC is an extreme disservice to one's education.
Great teacher, very intelligent. Has a lot of theories and teaches them in a very personally opinionated way. You can learn an immense amount from him, as long as you can honor that his opinions are his, and not necessarily yours.
Mohammad teaches you what to think, not how to think. In my view, his teaching style is criminal. Why? Because teachers are paid to TEACH! Not to indoctrinate students! Mohammad spews a monstrously slanted, painfully misinformed leftist vision of the world. Question what this man says! Better yet, take an economics class with Jim Hubert.
At first, he seems to be a very strict teacher but in fact, he's cool. For international students, it might be hard to keep up with him for the first few weeks 'cuz he uses lots of complicated and new words. It would be much better to read the book before entering his class, that way, you will understand more + learn new words as well.
He was interesting and opinionated. Seemed impatient somewhat, and was frustrating only in the sense that he changed the requirements of the class from those stated during the first week. I was out of town for a sibling's wedding and then sick with strep throat and by the time I realized the change in requirements it was to late to switch classes.
Mohammad al-Madani introduced me to anth. Inspired me so much I went on to UW to get a BA in Physical Anthropology. Take his classes.
great teacher refers to bad students as hitlers
A badass, but also a bit of a crackpot. Says he prefers to make his own ideas rather than rely on other theories; was badly bitten by informatic suppression memes as a child. Rabid Chomskoid, but is patient with argumentative students and takes time to explain everything.
He's the best teacher i've had in seattle central so far. at first, he seemed strict and scary. but he turned out to be very helpful and knowledgaable! you will learn alot in his class. as long as you give your best, you will do fine. its very worthy taking his class! he's an awesome instructor!!
Love his teaching style (no tests!) opens your mind to things you dont normally see
Very opinionated and usually unwilling to see things another way. but if you do the work-- you will get the grade you want.
very good teacher. but i do wish he would quit smoking! because he has great ideas and we want him to stick around a bit! makes you support your arguments and makes you think.
Mohammad's descriptions of the implications of Chomskyan linguistics and of the US racial system are particularly interesting. The papers require you to rearticulate his arguments. He is quite willing to recommend reading and answer student questions, not likely to change his mind. If you are at SCCC you really ought to take this class.
Definitely an interesting guy, with a lot of great things to say, but I don't know how I feel about the class. His set-up is confusing, and I don't appreciate that he seems to be asking that students NOT talk to him outside of class about homework (although I understand his reasoning). Hmm...
Mohammad is articulate and makes the class material fascinating. The class discussions are fun and enlightening. Everyone should take this class!
Mohammad is a wonderful teacher and inspires many students to get active in social issues. He is my favorite teacher. I would reccomend this class to anyone.
This class is a life-changer. MOHAMMAD AL-MADANI FOR PREZ 2012.
He does have some interesting things that will enlighten, however his attitude leaves much to be desired. He is egotistical and condescending. BTW, when he asks your opinion he does not want it. He asks to tell you how stupid you are. If you can kiss up alot you might pass.
I must respectfully disagree with the negative comments left about Prof. Al-Madani, because I, myself did not experience this negativism from him. He is one of thee most well articulated human beings that I've ever met. Mohammad's persona exudes confidence and respect, and when he speaks, all 70 students are transfixed and hanging on his every word
best teacher i've ever had. period. everything he says is interesting.
One of the best teachers I have ever had. I do not agree that kissing ass is what he wants. He asks people to state their opinions and then forces them to argue why they have them instead of just saying, "Uhh, I don't know." He challenges his students and gets them to focus on why they believe the things they believe. Take his class.
I appreciated his logical, argument driven approach to the class material. If you attend lecture, and take notes, the essays are a snap. I found the material challenging, but in a fun way. He is an interesting man and really cares about teaching his students how to think, and construct logical arguments on their own.
the course is fine, and i really learned some thing frome it. however, it is not easy at all!!!! when every time you give answer to hime, he always said "i don't know" or "no"........
Mohammad is an amazing intellectual! I hsve learned a lot from him and am very happy that I took his class. All of the people saying bad things about him are stuck in tunnel vision. You have to look from every view in life. If you are a right winged wacko and refuse to listen to opinions that you don't agree with then you will never see the world f
picks amazing books. if you pay attention, listen, and read YOU WILL LEARN SO MUCH ABOUT YOURSELF AND SOCIETY.Intensely stimulating, radical questions that if you're open minded, will make you wonder.
Plenty of writing. Attending class will help your grade. The class gets better as the quarter progresses.
His idea of teaching consists of brainwashing his students with unbelievably left wing propaganda. Easy 4.0 if you play his game, though. He should stick to the curriculum and realize that we are not paying for him to preach his opinions.
Very, very boring teacher with little to interest as to whether his students are learning anything in class. Avoid him.
The only students who are saying bad things about Mohamed here are the ones who like, voted for Bush, twice, have Fox news on 24/7 and don't believe in global warming. Anything other than their version of events is "brainwashing". I disagree. His class is an incredable eye-opener and I will remember it for as long as I live as being one of the best
Best teacher at SCCC hands down!
Mohammad changed my world and is the most influential teacher that I have ever had.
I took 3 classes with Mohammad and wish I could have taken more. I would recommend any class that he teaches. The content may vary some but the message is always the same. For those of you who wrote negative comments about brainwashing, think of all the other things you allow your self to be brainwashed by. Mohammad is a brilliant man!
Not a class i would recommend. Lots of boring lectures with a few interesting facts. He tries to add humor at times, which is nice, but overall not a fun class and he talks in circles. very confusing
The professor was inspiring. His approach to the material was deliberate, methodical, and thoughtful. In the beginning I was put off by what I perceived as his coldness and arrogance, but it was soon replaced by a thoughtful and passionate man. Articulate, humorous, and serious, al-Madani is a treasure. I know he wouldn't read this nonsense though.
I have a lot of respect for this man, even though he can be a bit harsh during class discussions. He takes anthropology, applies it to his students lives, and encourages them to make the world a better place. Take this class.
I took two of his classes. Great professor!
I felt very inspired by this man. He challenges you to go above and beyond and think WAY outside the box.
A truly inspiring man. A great influence on younger people. One of the best teachers that I have ever had!
Wow! I learned so much about myself and the world. I can't describe what I have taken away from listening to this man. I think his class should be mandatory for all Americans. Being a minority I thought I would know my culture more than anyone but I learned more in one quarter than all of my 30yrs. Everything makes sense now.
Mohammad is the single most influential prof I have ever had. He is brilliant, articulate, passionate, and inspiring. He urges you to explore your opinions rather than just state them. He brings unique perspectives to many issues. I'm now at a top 25 university and he is still the best prof I've encountered. I wish I had taken more of his classes!
Great class. People are saying he brainwashes and has a bunch of opinions, but honestly, he states facts. People who like Bush, watch Fox news, and aren't smart should NOT take his class. It takes a competent person to be in his class. I plan on taking more classes with him since I will be majoring in cultural anthropology. Again, great instructor.
This was the best and most enjoyable class that I have ever taken. As far as difficulty goes, if you do the little reading that is asked of you, do the 2 assignments per week and think about your responses to it, you will get a 4.0. He is a passionate professor and although the class is a little bit one-sided as far as opinions go, I got a lot out.
Mohammad's class is the most informative and amazing classes I have taken. He is incredibly smart and opinionated, but he challenges his students to think critically and form their own opinions. I wish he taught more classes- I would take every single one! I think he is the most amazing professor and I think he is incredibly sexy!
He's an amazing teacher, I took both his cultural and biological classes at the same time. There's alot of writing but he showed me a really easy way to write a 20 page paper. Organization, if you are interested in anthro he will change your world
Mohammed is an amazing professor. I took cultural anthropology with him. There aren't many assignments but he is kind of a tough grader. He is very monotone, so if you get bored easily, don't take his class. Don't take this class either if you are not interested in the subject.
Mohammad is the best teacher I have ever had. I have started thinking about race, sexuality and the way America is set up as a direct result of taking cultural anthropology with him. He's not easy, and he's controversial because he has strong opinions and isn't afraid to speak his mind. But that's what makes him such a good teacher.
Amazing teacher, life changing class. I highly recommend this class for every student of every major. it will provide a new way of looking at humans and our society.
Mohammad is an amzaing teacher! He is a brilliant man that is very passionate about knowledge. He is clear and his lectures and very intertaining. If you read the text assigned, come to class, and do the work you will come out on top. He is not an easy grader, but if you know what you are talking about he will indeed give you full credit.
Mohammed is one of the best and most knowledgeable teachers I've encountered at this school. He truly knows his subject. I love his sense of humor and his willingness to talk to students. If you're willing to ask him questions, he is an amazing resource and very approachable. I wish I was able to take more of his classes!
The class is focused on being a big group project through with to study main aspects of communication. Being on time is very important, especially on presentation day. Expectations are clear: show up and turn in all the assignments (they're easy if you do the readings) and you'll get an A. Madani is frank and class is great intro to Anthropology.
He's fantastic!
Mohammad is the best professor I have ever had. I have looked forward to every class and am sad to see it end. He is not an easy grader, he stands by his bold and outside-of-the-box-opinions and he is one of the smartest people I've met. Thought provoking lectures, readings, and weekly assignments. Take his class - it will change your life!
Very interesting material that was taught by a very interesting man. Take a course with Mohammad if you get the chance.
Any class of his can be a lofe changing experience. If you want it to be. He has an astoundingly vast knowledge of the material he covers and is willing to make sure his students understand it. A good cliche for his class is, "You reap what you sow."
Mohammad is the best teacher I have had at SCCC. He is amazingly knowledgeable and passionate. He is funny and makes class interesting. I recommend everyone take at least one class with him!
Engaged teacher. Exepcts full participation. Provides ample, useful office time and expects you to show up and follow through. Nice to have a teacher who takes students and teaching so seriously.
All of my friends who have taken him LOVE him so I gave him a try... I wasn't very interested in his 205 class but this 206 one I LOVED. He opens your eyes to new things and expands your world view. He's funny and sarcastic. He is very knowledgeable & keeps the class interesting. He doesn't use ppts & he always shows a film. His brain is amazing!
Since taking this class, I realized Madani has a reputation for being loved. This was not my experience... I did not enjoy the class. The whole structure was a seminar/group presentation in which you talked about culture, culture, culture. Also, he likes to shut the locked door on the hour-- don't you dare be late!
Wow, this man is amazing! Be prepared to have your ideas and what you think you know be challenged and really reflect on them, for the better. You will learn so much. He's the best professor I have ever had. Hands down. Come with an open mind and the willingness to learn and you won't be disappointed.
He isn't the right teacher for me, I feel as though some of the comments on here were hired to say nice things because hes definitely not loved.
Mohammad al-Madani is singularly the most amazing professor I have ever taken, and in fact is one of the most phenomenal people I have ever met. If you have the chance, look up the article written about him in The Stranger around 2003, I believe. The entire class was interesting, but the last two weeks absolutely blew me away and changed my world.
the worst class i have ever taken.
First rate professor. SCC is extremely lucky to have him. He is a heavy weight intellectual. Should be heading a dept. at Columbia or Berkeley. Appreciates witty humor.
I had my first Anthropology class with him this quarter, and he is honestly one of the best teachers that I've ever had. He is very clear about his expectations of you as a student and wants you to succeed, but he is not to be taken advantage of. I've never felt as engaged in a class as I have in his. Definitely a great teacher and a great guy!
Very organized and easy to follow lectures. Sequential and follows the book. Grade based on weekly quizzes so study up! Likes it when you speak up in class but may tease you if you get it wrong. Overall a competent, prepared teacher.
Phenomenal instructor. One of the most intelligent and passionate people I have encountered. Lectures are clear, engaging, and funny. Very fair. Somewhat of a tough grader as far as the weekly "essays". I took things out of this course that I did not expect. It was a very inspiring experience! Everyone should take at least one class with him.
So much and confuse work
Likes to drop f-bombs. Somewhat arrogant. Tough grader - makes unhelpful snippy comments on the weekly write-ups, which can be discouraging especially if you know that you've put some effort in the assignment which is not reflected in the grade you're given. would not recommend, unless you like professors who "preach"rather than teach.
awesome instructor! can be hard but take good notes, ask questions, and it's not too challenge
He's not that bad. Can be intimidating at first but super approachable once you actually talk to him. Class is easy if you keep up with the reading and take good notes. There's a written assignment due each week which is where your reading/notes will pay off. If you can handle those two things then this class is an easy A. Plus you'll learn a lot!
He changed my life.
Wish all my courses could be with Mohammad!
Mohammad is a great teacher who knows how to keep his class interested. Depending on the course you take, the class (206) has weekly essays (1 page content + reflection) with in class peer editing and are due at the end of the week (or Monday) or (205) there are weekly quizzes on the material + documentary watched + lectures. Very inspiring teacher
Great.
Don't miss.
weekly tests, each worth 9% of your grade. Almost nothing else. Did not even open my textbook, the quizzes are almost entirely based on his lectures. Easy enough if you take those quizzes are seriously as they should be.
Alright folks, here's what to expect from Survey of Anthropology with Al-Madani (I loved it): Lectures (and easy quizzes for your grade). 2-3 weeks of biological anthropology where you learn about evolution and bonobos and get very compelling evidence for why humanity isn't naturally warlike. Then cultural anthropology, then segue into capitalism.
Bit of a crackpot intellectual, too in love with his opinions and worldview... this class was mostly theorizing, I honestly do not feel like I learned much. Take this class if you are into that sort of thing. Could be "life changing" as some have said. Or not.
The only instructor I have had who does not bother to personally hand back the assignment to you. Just reads the name off the paper. Take that as you will...
tough grader.. international students shouldn't take this class
Mohamed al-Madani's class was the first anthropology class I've ever taken and it was everything I had hoped it would be. He had humor and great examples in his lectures. I learned so much about myself and other cultures. The "textbook" is a great read if you enjoy narrative prose I highly recommend this class and would love to take more from him!
He's such an interesting and special human being. He really makes you think about certain issues. No textbook. Everything from his genius brain. That's why you have to attend everyday, you won't wanna miss out on content he shares. Take notes!!!! Weekly quizzes all based on what he taught the past week. Assigns max 45mins of video to watch a week.
Honestly, this man doesn't really teach anything that you can't learn (or discover) on your own either through reading or just opening your eyes to the world outside your home.
Stimulating class I'll say that, but tough grader. I turned in 90% of the assignments, no late work, and put a lot of effort forward, participated in class, and yes..I missed a total of three days but somehow ended up with a failing grade.
A boring intellectual
THIS CLASS was difficult! Mohammad is a wonderful, intellectual guy who had a lot to say about his ideas and concepts of the world. In that aspect, I learned a lot. But as a 4.0 student, his class was the only class I have EVER failed simply due to the fact that he does not clarify what specifically you should know, therefor studying is impossible.
He's my favorite prof at Seattle Central. His classes are super interesting and he really makes you think about what you're learning. Skipping class with Mohammad isn't an option because almost everything is done in the classroom. Weekly quizzes or papers are his thing. Focus is needed in his classes but oh, it's so worth it!
I think to say Mohammad is my favorite professor. His lectures are amazing and he's a funny guy. Attendance doesn't matter and the only thing you are graded for are the quizzes and in-class assignments. The problem is that you only have a total of 8 quizzes and 4 in class assignments, which are more like micro pop quizzes. These can be difficult.
Not the kind of class you want to take if you are lazy and dont want to learn, and if youre paying for college if you are not going to class. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you miss class you wont pass because you dont have text book, and all quizzes are about the lectures and the random facts that he gives. One of the most amazing classes
This was the best class I have ever taken. It really helped me understand how humans organize systems, and why certain aspects of society are the way they are. Mohammad has a really interesting no-BS perspective about humans that I really appreciated. Take this class, you will not be disappointed.
He knows the subject very well, but belittles/demeans your lack of knowledge in such un-motvating ways that you don't want to answer future questions. Attempts at getting people to participate by calling them/us as listed: dead/braindead, rock, & martians from pluto & that we are constantly looking at him in a hostile way. Terrible Professor!!!
Almadani might seem dry to some people, but he is an amazing professor. He will start whichever class you take with him with a warning about NC grades and the like, so he will seem hostile at first. However, engage with him, ask him questions, and he will love to have an intellectual discussion with the whole class even if it takes the rest of it.
Maybe it's just me, but he seems more intent on getting his ideas or views across than in engaging with his students in a clear, helpful way. Also seems to have a mocking/cynical sense of humor which may seem insensitive or off-putting to some. Give me love over cynicism any day of the week! Odd teacher.
Show a lot of videos & tests on content. Best to read & study video transcripts. Interesting guy but tests are weird. He does curve the tests. He won't tolerate people texting, reading or focusing on anything but him. He's intelligent and interesting man, a radical thinker.
Al-Madani is an interesting man. He did a good pushing for discussion in the class however it is important to talk to him if you do not understand something or have an issue in or out of class. Relatively radical for a professor (openly criticizing academia.) If you are looking for a challenging class he is the professor for you.
Hes a hoot. The first few classes he tries to scare you but stick around because he just gets better. Hes very dedicated to what he teaches which is really nice. He doesnt grade you on much but hes a very fair grader. Fully recommend, totally inspiring!
He tries to get you to see the world the way he sees it.. which is heavily ideological. Kinda dishonest in my opinion. Otherwise he's an interesting, if kooky, professor. Proceed with caution!
Professor al-Madani is hands down, my favorite professor. So much so that Ive taken 2 additional classes with him that arent required for my degree. Hes very well spoken and has a wealth of knowledge to impart. His lectures are very informative. His tests are difficult and questions are derived almost entirely from in-class videos and lectures.
I'm a current student at UW and decided to take this class to transfer some credits. The first week seemed a little rocky so I thought he might have just been testing us. He never refers to the text or use canvas. He takes personal jabs at students during class and is very cynicle. I made this post so no one makes the mistake I made again!
Interesting man but the class was odd. It consisted mostly of online videos and charts that you could easily find yourself and he was rather vague on what would be covered on the tests. I would probably give another of his classes a shot though because like I said, he is rather interesting.
This class changes how I think about the world and was super funny, but the grade is based entirely on tests.
His lectures were interesting and the material is interesting but he's such a tough grader. I tried so hard to study and be prepared even at the expense if my other classes. My classmates who like him have only taken his cultural anthro, I took bio anthro. Maybe the material and vibe is different. I would say skip this Prof if you value your GPA!
Mohammed was the reason I decided to major in anthro! His perspective is really important, and if you listen and make the effort you will leave this class with a better understanding of how the world works! There was no required text for my class. To get the grade (and the most out of the class) you really have to be present in lecture and STUDY!
Mohammad is by far one of the most outstanding teachers Ive had, especially at Seattle Central. He is very funny and engaging, and very upfront about his ideas in a way that is educational. I signed up for Bio Anthro because I needed a 50 minute science credit but I got so much more. Attendance is not graded, but class is engaging and prepares you
Al-Madani is truly the most inspiring professor I am yet to encounter. He genuinely wants all of his students to get a good grade in his classes. On days before quizzes. he will point out specific subjects that will be found on the quiz. He is friendly and outgoing, and very clearly enjoys what he does. Is very respectful, fun and understanding.
I'd heard good things about him, so I signed up for this class during the COVID lockdown. I want to clarify that I never met the prof. There were no lectures, and no discussions, just reading assignments and papers to write with *very little feedback one way or the other. So I wrote five good papers and passed. Would have liked to attend a lecture.
I took a class with this professor over 20 years ago at SCCC and he changed my life. He radicalized my thinking, but also told us to get our degrees and succeed academically. I now have 2 bachelors degrees, a masters, and a doctorate, and he still remains my favorite professor ever. I know I would not be the person I am today without him. A++
A life-changing professor. The best and most engaging learning experience I ever had, and I wish I could go back and do it all again.
