hes good! :D

Very biased and ****. By the middle of the semester only two to three boys talked, and Azadpur didn't have any particular organization with his lectures. He takes attendance. I would NOT reccomend this class.
I did not like his class at all. He was only able to engage a few people. The class was centered around his views and did not incorporate anyone in the class. The text was bad and we were graded on only 3 things. The midterm was hard but somehow I pulled off an A on the final.
excellent fielding any question, willing to work after class and help on papers etc.
The man knows his stuff, however, communicating it is another matter. He needs to 'dummy down' his material so that more than 2 students can participate in class, as well as learn. The reading remained esoteric till the end, and his notes? Don't get me started.
What the people said before is fairly accurate. He teaches his class like he's having a discussion about the subject, NOT like hes interested in having the students learn. If you already know what he's talikng about you'll do fine but don't expect to have any info handed to you. Finals were challenging but good: Specifi essay questions
Some of the remarks on this page are defamatory and intolerant. I have had this professor for several courses and I have never seen him insult anyone. Also he teaches college philosophy, that means no spoon-feeding, lots of discussion, and realizing that not all of our opinions are true.
Azadpur is a true philosopher for people who want to learn real philosophy. The rest of you on here can go cry to your mommies at home during vacation getting your allowences- brats
good teacher and somewhat easy to follow; ask questions and he'll try his best to clear things up.
challenging and thought provoking, a better speaker than other philosophy teachers who seem afraid of human contact, very clear and concise for hard to grasp material.
i had a great time in his class, he made me think a lot. which is a good thing.
if you're the type of student that just wants an easy A dont bother. if you want to learn something and dont mind working for it this guy is your man. This guy is not for everyone. Thats for sure. But then again islamic philosophy isnt for everyone. On
Must people who are rating Azadpur are retarded. I look around during class, and everyone who has a clue has a great time.
He always engages the class and can keep smiles on our faces with the bad jokes.
He is a very good philosopher. On the other hand, he is not a very good teacher, not in the sense that he will introduce you to a subject that are you aren't deeply interested or familar with you in the first place. If you are looking for a teacher to introduce you to philosophy, take another teacher.
Awesome teacher when you give him a chance. alot of students seem to dog him but he always did his best to help me out. The classes were kind of dense but as soon as i went to office hours he would break it down alot better. I think maybe hes better one on one. despite sometimes getting lost in the material i found he was always fair and did his best to help.
I find him interesting. Although you can get really lost in his "philosophical discourse" if you dont pay attention. Advise: take meticulous notes!! Pay attention!! If you dont, you will have a difficult time with his midterms, even though their takehome. Overall, if youre the type who just reads textbooks, this is not for you.
Awesome and eloquent...cute accent.
great professor, he is engaging and inspiring. class is always interesting. the assignments, miterm, and final are not hard if you pay attention and do the required studying.
He is a great professor with a lot of knowledge that he shares with us. He also has a good sense of humour.
His lectures do get long, BUT TAKE NOTES. The midterm and final are both take home, so write well and go into detail. Thus spoke Zathura is a favorite of his.
He is a great Professor with sense of humor. He knows his subjects & is very knowledable. I really enjoyed his class. His final is take home & he has just couple of exams in the class (Open Book) very easy. I highly recommend him.
The talks about meta. have been the best because the have stuck with me to present day.
I think that the structure of his classes tend to really leave it up to the students to inquire for information, which is arguably the essence of Philosophy. I thought the class was great, don't be intimated when he asks a question and the room is silent, speak up and the class will become an incredible place of learning
I took a lot away from his class. Lecture/discussion and reading material very eye opening and thought provoking. 2 Midterms make up the whole grade, so be prepared to go to class and actually use your brain. Very intelligent professor with good sense of humor.
Fun and engaging, great breadth of knowledge on his subject. Easy on the load of work one has to turn in, yet very substantial and "meaty" in the content. I recommend him unreservedly.
We had Kyle Dupen as a substitute for the 1st month and I was facinated by the subject of World Religions.I was so excited to learn more when Azapur came but I was deeply disapointed. His lecture are boring. The material is interesting but he makes it very boring. All I could hear was .. umm.. umm.. um. Hes a great Philosopher but a horrible profes
Avoid. Completely useless and difficult material. Unless you enjoy superstitious midevil theology and "angelology" (seriously), this course has little to offer you. Maybe he's a nice guy, but a really bad prof.
A must take, I say.The instructor explains the Islamic mystical tradition by drawing from Greek philosophy, existentialism, and even Focault. He also compares Muslim thought with Buddhism, kaballah, and other mystical traditions. This is new. He goes out of his way to answer student questions and makes difficult stuff clear.
Really enjoyed this class on ethics. The class went through egoism, utilitarian, and Kantian theories the first half. Then the second half focused on virtue theory and existentialism. Very interesting readings on Nietzsche "Thus Spoke Zarathustra". Ethics was a required class, but I liked it more than I thought. It is a big interest of mine now.
This prof will challenge you, but is also willing to work with you; what you get out depends on what you put into it, and he made me a better student. If you are looking for an easy A, or aren't interested in the material, then this class is not for you.
Although an introductory course, he expects you to know a lot about ethics prior to this class. You must go to class, he takes attendance everyday. You must have a great interest in this class to pass. Also, taking notes and doing all the readings will not get you an A. You must do outside research in order to get satisfactory grade.
Azadpur is clearly interested in the material, he has knowledge. However, this class was not organized well, didn't really use the primary text. Two take-home essays were from extra reading materials. Lectures, he goes much too quickly and does not clearly present the material. Expect to dedicated a massive amount of time to outside study
He does not know how to engage students. He does not know how to interpret student question or comments, unless, that is, it involves an answer or concept he wants to discuss. He has overly optimistic goals for the semester and consequently does not discuss each reading adequately. Despite confused students, he often moves on to keep to schedule.
The class wasn't anything special, good or bad. However as a teacher he seemed ill equipped. On more then one occasion he yelled at specific students (which is just unprofessional), and another time he lost his temper with the whole class. I was unable to take him seriously, and didn't learn anything from him reading out power point presentations.
Grade is based 40% on a written midterm, 50% written final and 10% attendance... Once I got an A on the midterm using none of the lecture, I just signed in before class and left... Confusing but easy... If you can write.
Great teacher with a fascinating subject, just watch out cuz the final is really hard. Its not for his lack of clarity but the concepts he's trying to convey are difficult to get one's head around. But, its well worth the work.
I could barely stay awake during this class and I wasnt the only one! the grade is based on 1 midterm, 1 final, and attendance+participation. there is a sign in sheet. I seldom used the text for the papers and the notes were not too helpful either. Not impossible to get a good grade however it is extremely boring and useless.
he is defiantly a bit of a hardass because he will tare down your argument, but he will always try to help you improve and learn. he is a great teacher. i have had him 4 times and enjoyed each of his classes. he is open to any view point, but only if you can engage in well formed dielectrics. he doesn't accept unfounded opinions, support arguments
The readings were interesting but the class, not so much. The essay topics for the midterm and final made use of almost ALL the readings in the course so try not to skip them.
NOT easy. The material/way he presents it is not very clear. Did not require a great deal of reading, but held you responsible for what he did. Only a take home midterm and final. 4 essay Qs each, 2-3 pages per Q. Went to every class, and final killed me. Must work hard for passing grade. Azadpur is not open to much except his own ideas.
His expertise is Islamic traditions. He is slightly boring but he is there for the students. Very helpful and tries his best to make students understand the material. The material is interesting. I would take this class. He is also kind of funny.
Yes he is challenging but considering the level of the class it should expected. Pretty straight forward, 2 essays, both are open notes. Loads of reading, use your mind to the best of your ability and make friends and you will surely pass this class. He was even courteous to let the class look over his power points. Huge plus.
In classes I have taken with him (a few), he gives two tests but allows students re-write their midterms and helps us with our problems. The material is hard and very interesting. He teaches very well.
I've only had him for one day so this review can be taken lightly. Constructively speaking, he did not present the materials in an organized fashion and by this I mean that the presented felt very scattered brained. The discussion from the class did not connect to the materials, in fact it was tangential and absolutely useless.
great professor
Very interesting philosophical perspective...Challenging Professor. Will not hold your hand or carry your books. Not for the scattered brain or those who cannot dig deep into the material. IF you earn an A in his class, it is very well deserved.
Brilliant and funny professor who creates a stimulating learning environment, but doesn't spoon-feed students ideas. The class offers an array of philosophical, literary, spiritual readings that demonstrate the richness and reach of Islamic mysticism, and how within that tradition philosophy plays a part in realizing the divine.
a true college course, it is definitely rigorous. However, what do you expect from upper division philosophy? especially when the material is about Islamic political philosophy.
His lectures are outstanding. Great sense of humor. Explains the material in great detail. Available for help with papers and exams. I am thankful for having him as a professor this semester for Phil 436 and Phil 502. Just a tip, if you want to succeed in this class and Phil 502, attend all class meetings, do all the readings and you got an A.
Outstanding professor. The readings are somewhat challenging but he goes over it in class in layman's terms. His TA's are there for help during office hours. The exams and essays are not easy, but he will help you together with his TA's to make sure you do well. Must attend every class meeting to understand the material. He is also very funny.
The professor is...... Ok, nothing to special.
This professor has a different approach which takes a while to get. Which is around mid-semester. He's not hard, the information is different therefore processing takes more time
Azadpur is a nice guy and he knows a lot about the subject. I was really excited to take this class, but I found many of the readings tedious (not usually due to content, but rather the shear amount of them) and class time was not always rewarding. Attendance and participation will save you at the end of the day. Overall I'm glad I took this course
I took his ethics class and found it to be pretty easy, but I can't say that I learned too much. He's a really nice guy and knows a lot about the subject but most of the class time was spent goofing around or listening to him pull a few quotes out of the reading. If you're really interested in the subject I'd recommend another professor
It was the first time that Azadpur taught an existentialism course at SFSU. The class was engaging and gave me fairly decent understanding of existentialism. The readings from Nietzche and Fanon were my favorites. The only criticism is that some students would ask questions which were off topic and we would digress. Overall, class was pretty good.
Deals with difficult topics that sometimes don't exactly give themselves over to clarity. Handles it quite well.
I had this class early in the morning and needed much coffee to stay awake. I made the mistake of realizing early on that this professor says "Um" about every other word which made it difficult to focus. It's tough because there were grad students mixed with undergrad so the expectations of students were varied. Midterm/Final were very difficult.
His focus on his female GTA was more than his eye contact with the students. Nice man but not that great of a teacher.
He brings such a different style of teaching, it's focused on cultivation in the class room. You as a class grow to an understanding and it was one my greatest experiences to be a student of this man. If you like continental philosophy, you couldn't find a better professor.
I had a very good experience with Dr. Azadpur and found him to be very helpful and approachable and dedicated to helping the students.
Very intelligent professor, sometime his lectures are a bit dry and monotone but overall very interesting. Midterm is in class multiple choice and short answer, tough grader but within reason. He expects you to know your stuff. Final is a take home essay 3 separate questions, VERY detailed but he tells you exactly what you need to include. Grade is made up of midterm final and participation only. Two extra credit options throughout the semester, lectures with PowerPoint, attendance counts
He is a philosopher first, teacher second. I have not enjoyed his ancient and ethics course as much as his specialty courses. He has passion about what he likes and shows little interest on things he dislikes. Ethics is not a great class with him, he's heard all the arguments so many times it's hard to keep interest when the professor has lost his.
Do not take this course if you do not have to. If you are not majoring in Philosophy, you're gonna have a bad time. ALSO, he gives you an extremely difficult 9-12 page final essay. Just saying.
Azadpur was a cool guy, nice to talk to in his office hours. I am not a philosophy major and find the thickness of the subject to be a bit boring honestly. So the class was a nap sometimes. A midterm which is some muliple choice and short answer essay, an extra credit essay, and the final consists of three essays 3-4 pages each
Tough grade with strict guideline. The class may seem lay back but when grading your paper he follows strict guidelines, which could confused students at first. Do the reading, asking questions, and come to class. Not an easy course. Help move the class forward by asking question.
I thought it was an easy grader but he is not. He relies on many of it from academic understanding of the text. Come to class and ask questions. The main things to do the reading on your own. Many of the learning comes from your own reading. My suggestion on the day of the test is to wake up really early like 4 or 5 a.m. and reread the material.
Half of the class dropped. His expectations are out of reach. Grade is from two tests and nothing else. He teaches the class as though we are majoring in it and already have a thorough background. His tests are extremely nit-picky. He also never explains himself and expects us to just know what he means to say.
Gets irritated when students don't keep up with readings (intimidating if you've fallen behind lately!), but that's fair. Can be stern at times but seems to care sincerely about the success of his students, and is willing to help them and give them a chance as long as they show that they are going to put in the necessary effort. Solid professor.
Disliked this class. Disliked this professor. He spoke softly, unclear, and does not have a commanding presence. Talks bad about Trump often. I'm here to learn ethics, not hear your left-wing political views. Just wasn't very enjoyable and felt awkward at times. If he spoke louder, and said "uh" less often, class might be tolerable.
Not really into Ethics myself so I found the lectures boring at times. Two exams (midterm/final) and a couple of pop quizzes for extra points towards these exams. Attendance mandatory, but I hardly showed and still got an A. Exams multichoice/short response. Tough grader on short response. Provides study guides. Major requirement, decent class.
Prof. Azadpur is an insightful professor, both in his research and in his lectures. Yes, you must put in the necessary work to get the grade you desire, but that's how most things in life work. Don't let this dissuade you, however. If you are interested in philosophy, I highly recommend taking a class with Prof. Azadpur. You won't regret it.
Professor Azadpur is a wonderful teacher. He's fair, balanced, caring, interesting and inspirational. He provides clear, interesting, and compelling information. Ethics is a difficult topic and he provides balanced views while generating a lively class discussion. Highly recommended. I would definitely take his course again.
You can tell he cares deeply about religion. He is awesome about letting people share their views. He always makes sure that each student has a voice. I didn't know anything about the Islamic faith or Buddhism and he made religion accessible to an atheist. Great class.
This 770 course was a graduate seminar in Foucault. It was amazing. Professor Azadpur is kind and hilarious. He was great at facilitating lively discussion. I probably learned more about philosophical writing and arguments in this course than my other seminars. I really enjoyed this class and would def take 770 again on another topic.
World Religions course - Dr. Azardpur covered each tradition extensively, even going into some concepts I would not expect, like Nietzsche's commentary on religious morality. Azadpur is incredibly impassioned and caring about the discipline, something I found to be reassuring and inspiring. A professor to whom I hold the highest regard.
Ethics PHIL450 - Dr. Azadpur took extra care to review both traditional and contemporary concepts, and even going outside the box, so to speak, in order to provide a greater picture to the course and his instruction. Dr. Azadpur is a rare instructor, someone who clearly cares about the craft and is devoted to the discipline. Highly respected.
I found the reading and the lectures really inspiring even though I didn't pursue studies in Ancient Greek/Roman Philosophy. This is because Dr. Azadpur presented philosophy as a way-of-life which is ultimately meant to make your life happier and more fulfilling... But to do it right, you got to understand the underlying theory. Take it seriously!
Prof Azadpur is enthusiastic about the material he teaches, very well organized and ready to engage students. While many teachers tend to meander into their own (unrelated) philosophical musings in class, he is able to convey a vast amount of content succinctly without boring or overloading his students. His classes are among the best you can take.
Dr Azadpur is a great professor. His lectures show that he really knows his stuff esp. on ideas surrounding Nietszcshe and Continental philosophy. The course revolves around several tests and extra credit was available also at the end of the term. The ethics course left it up to the student to be responsible for the readings. Really great prof!
he was okay.
Really great professor. Yes the class is slightly challenging but after all it is a philosophy course so it is hard to understand sometimes but he did an amazing job at explaining and is very passionate about teaching. If you are struggling he will help you, just ask after class or go to office hours and participate!
