What Students Say
“Took this course last semester, the highlight of university was when someone asked what the midterm average was, Hossain looks directly at him, pauses for a good couple of minutes and finally says: "some people got 100, some people got 80, many people got 40" funny professor, sometimes difficult to understand, and hard course if you don't know econ”

The most jokes prof for some reason, he can't answer questions during exams because he may give the answer to you (too nice for his own good). He is super easy going and there aren't any surprises on tests, he uses the same problems from his class... Quizzes are hard but when done poorly by the class he curves it!
Fair exams. Whether you're going to class or just reading the textbook, you're set with this guy.
This guy gives you joke midterm exams and quizzes, you can get high 90s on those, however, the 50% final is brutal.
Dr. Hossain struggles to explain concepts clearly. Luckily he teaches from slides which explain things well. Homework assignments and quizzes are EXCELLENT practice for exams. I went to class just because I found him entertaining. Do the practice questions and you'll do fine. The final exam was incredibly difficult, much worst than the midterm.
He's one of the best profs I've ever had in Western. He's so caring and responsible for every student in his class. Don't hesitate to talk to him after class or during his office hours. He will be very willing to help you obtain a good grade.
He is an awesome professor in Western. He replying email very fast and answer questions clearly. if you have any question do not hesitate to talk to him after class or during his office hours. he always helping you.
Incredible professor, always available for extra help. Read assigned textbook pages, use the available practice questions and quizzes and you'll be fine. He's extremely understanding and is super helpful if you're stuck on concepts. I usually hate economics courses because of past experiences in 1020 but Prof Hossain is one of the best professors.
Very good prof. I took this course as an elective, and i loved it. He really loves his students and wants all of them to do good. I recommend all to take Prof. Hossain whenever he is teaching a course. He will take the time to explain any concept you might have problems with, and explain it very well.
Prof. Hossain really is a good professor. He always talked a lot of details during the class and provided many good feedbacks to his students. When I asked questions, he always replied email immediately. He loves his students and hopes everyone can do well in courses. I love him very much.
Honestly, this guy has me speechless. I didn't think profs could get this bad. He's boring, tests are VERY hard, doesn't care about students, microphone quality is awful, takes away studying resources days before tests, doesn't even teach just lists stuff to read. It's honestly disgraceful that I pay for this and it's considered an education.
I am very happy to spend a pleasant semester with this professor. The professor made a specific video explanation for the calculation and analysis part, which was very helpful for the examination review. In the process of learning and review, the professor always responds to emails in a friendly and timely manner and explains them patiently.
Patiently answers email questions. Lectures aren't very helpful if you already fully understood the tb material. Teaches r e a l l y slowly and the accent may be a problem to non-native speakers.
I toke his class this semester. His class is amazing. What he taught me is inspired and useful in the future study. Actually, he is willing to help student even after class. Actually he helped me a lot not only in this class but also in my life. Also he responded to my questions so quickly and carefully. I do recommend u guys choosing his class!
I do recommend u guys to choose his course. Actually he is the ever best teacher I have ever met. His class is clear and he is so responsible to his student. Not only me but also others got help from him a lot. His course is so amazing and helpful even in the online class. He is so willing so nice to help students. With his help, I feel so thankful
Patient and respectful prof. Hold a meeting weekly, and quick email response. Really recommend you guys come and take this class if possible. Tests are fair, straightforward, and not tricky. Just read the textbook carefully and you will be fine. Amazing course, enjoyable experience.
Amazing prof. He is the sweetest, he answers emails really quickly and you can tell he wants his students to do well.
How can someone like him be a professor? Trying to stay awake when he teaches was THE single most challenging thing to do. He pauses for way too long for no reason during lectures. His explanations are not clear at all. If you take his courses, good luck ^^ No wonder why he only teaches first-years. Cuz no one would ever take his course again :)
Professor Hossain's lectures were clear. He arranged lectures every week and posted some good videos. He responded to my emails quickly. Following his lecture notes and lectures helped me understand the difficult topics and doing well.
He is a really nice prof, and willing to give you advice and feedback
I highly recommend his courses, he's a responsible, patient and reasonable professor.
nice funny prof who is accessible and happy to help students
Highly recommend his class. He explains the concepts clearly in a short lecture(usually 30-40min). You should get an easy 80+ as long as you follow his lectures and lecture notes. Reading textbook and attendance at lectures are not mandatory but highly recommended.
Very nice professor that goes out of his way to make sure everyone understands. His exams were very reasonable as well.
His lectures are incredibly unclear, messy, and all over the place. Avoid him at all costs unless you want to be confused and dependent on solely the textbook for the entire semester. When you contact him with genuine constructive criticism about his teaching methods he becomes very patronising.
What can I say about this gem of a person? Mohammad Hossain is by far the best prof I have had thus far. He quickly responds to emails & he genuinely wants us all to do well. He CLEARLY tells us what to expect and ass long as you do the MyLab you are good. Beware tho, Hossain's final is hard compared to his midterms and worth more of our grade.
Hossain is a very fair and sincere professor. He always answers questions after class. Those that do poorly in this class most likely dont attend his lectures or dont follow his instructions. Hossain closes MyLab a few hours before examinations because he wants you to use the textbook and lecture notes, which are better resources to prepare.
I went to every single lecture during the semester and I can base my rating on a few solid things. Prof Hossain is a very nice man and tries to keep his lectures short and sweet. He will always cut class short, if your class is at 1:30 you're out by 2. That being said its hard to retain was he's saying during class.
Hossain was a good prof overall. He clearly wanted students to succeed, and he put-in the work to ensure that we did! His review sessions were very helpful, and many people did well on the exams because of this. My only complaint is that his videos were very poor quality and were hard to learn from. Be prepared to do a lot on your own in his class
Professor Hossain explains the concepts well and motivates the regular students. His classes are short but enjoyable and he also encourages participation. His exams are difficult, but regular students can answer difficult questions well.
Hossain is really chill and a great guy. He's really nice and funny. Lectures are a bit boring and he doesn't explain things very well. His exams especially the final are really challenging and you need to practice a lot. Make sure you know the content and book inside and out. Very hard to get a good grade in his class.
Best professor Ive had so far. Prof. Hossain sets reasonable expectations, tests fair material, and is a kind person. Its not hard at all to do well in this class as long as you attend lectures (he hints at what will be on the exam) and tutorials. Good sense of humor and often hosts exam review sessions and office hours. 11/10
One of the best professors I've had in university! He explains all concepts very well in his lectures and VT's. If you put in the effort, it is easy to do well. He makes economics a lot easier to understand. Would definitely take his class again if I could!
Kind professor who genuinely wants students to succeed. Final exam was very difficult (study!!), in-person lectures were confusing and presentation text was way too small, so it's hard to focus if in the back row (couldn't come early had a back to back class). Focus on understanding textbook content and USE MYLAB (will help a lot). Best of luck :)
I really liked having Hossain for this course! He is very genuine and a fair professor, also super encouraging! I know people who skipped class and did well in the course, but personally, I always found it helpful. Make sure you sit up front, it can be hard to hear him clearly in the back.
Professor Hossain's lectures cover every main topic that will show up on the exam. He always stays for over 20 minutes after class to help students if they have any questions and always responds to emails immediately. Truly a great prof.
Not great. His lectures were really boring and I found it impossible to understand his explanations to anything. He was nice but honestly an awful prof. Your textbook is your best friend when you have him.
Professor hossain is caring. His classes were short but enjoyable. He discussed key concepts and asked more questions from these concepts in the exams. His exams are hard but fair and regular students can do well.
Lectures.... GREAT!!! I am not in his class, but my roommate is and I listened to her lectures, so funny, love the guy. Makes me wish I was in econ and not in science :(
Best prof! Reaches all types of students from any background. Use his office hours, very helpful.
Really good professor who is very patient and course contents are well-organized and detailed. It is a fairly easy course that if you spend enough time on it you would get a really good grade.
Professor Hossain makes micro insufferable. It is hard to understand what he is saying and if you have to sit at the back of the class, there is no way you can hear or focus on anything. Makes final EXTREMELY HARD. DO NOT RECOMMEND, avoid this class if possible.
Nice and kind professor. Gives good feedback. Responds to emails quickly. Explains the math and graphs very well.
Midterms were decent but the final was BRUTAL. His lectures were not as informative so reading the textbook is definitely required.
Hossain is a very caring prof that strives to help his students so succeed. Def attend his office hours and lectures! Be aware that at times it can be hard to understand him during the lectures and that the exam was on the harder side. Overall, decent prof!
This professor really cares about every student and will really try to make you get good grades
To do good, solve weekly practice questions and submit assignments timely. Any problem in classes or resources, share with Prof.
Discussed interesting examples. Exams were based on concepts and examples discussed in classes. When we used office hours, Professor Hossain explained the mistakes we did and how to overcome those. A caring professor.
Hossain is genuinely the only economics professor who is a human being at Western. Hossain cares for his students and wants us to do well. Definitely take your course with him if you can, he marks relatively easily and will help you do better in economics if you are struggling!
Great!
The professor made me love math econ!
Thank you Professor Hossain. For your teaching and guidance.
Hossain overall is a good prof but his accent makes it hard to understand him sometimes in lecture. He says 20mins after class answering students questions and goes slow in lectures when explaining concepts.
A caring prof. Explained everything very well and slowly. Available to answer questions before and after classes. Posted helpful lecture notes and practice questions. Many of my friends did very well in his course by following his lectures.
Solid prof for an easy class and he sets you up well to succeed even if you don't go to any of the lectures. Recommend this beauty but he's hard to understand sometimes.
I had a chance to review the MANY comments that were posted on Rate My Professors, and it seems that most comments were posted by the same person. Probably him, given his ego. There is NO way that so many people rushed out to post so many posts for one professor. He expects you to learn from the textbook and goes over few concepts in depth.
Professor Hossain is overall a very caring professor. Most of the content is straight from the textbook, so coming to lectures is unnecessary. The difficulty of the two midterms was average; however, I found the final exam difficult. Try to get a good mark on the midterms so you aren't as stressed about the final.
Professor hossain is a caring professor and an easy marker. So as long as you study doing well in the course isnt hard, however, the lectures are a waste of time, he doesnt teach much that you cant find in the slides or textbook and it is hard to understand through his accent at times.
Good prof although the mid terms and final were pretty brutal. A lot of people don't like him for his accent but if you try even a little you can understand and you'll get used to how he phrases things. Classes usually never fully covered the material because he runs out of time. Really nice and easy to talk to, and always encourages students.
Mohammad Hossain is a very caring professor. With no prior econ knowledge, the course was very manageable as long as you kept up with the lecture notes and read the textbook as necessary. The exams are very fair and match the lectures well. Honestly, you do not need to show up to lectures as long as you read the textbook and do practice questions!
Hossain is very hard to understand as he has a very thick accent. This took a few lectures to adapt to but once you start to understand the way he formulates his sentences it gets easier. His tests are fair and are very heavy on lecture material rather than the textbook.
Professor Hossain is an extremely caring professor, You can tell he wants each student to succeed. If you attend his lectures and follow the suggestions he has for you on what to study and how to study his course you will do extremely well.
He is a lovely guy. His accent is very difficult to follow but the exams are very very easy
Yes he is hard to understand, but he recognizes that and gives lots of resources to help! His exams were not hard (but I also took AP in high school). I think he is the best 1021 prof. If you attend his lectures, he will also tell you some of the questions on the exams in advance. He is also quite funny. I would definitely take a class w him again!
He is a good guy and an okay prof. His accent is annoying and he so through the lessons painfully slow. He makes a 1hr feel like a 3hr
Hossain is an easy prof to have but he doesn't go through test-like questions in his lectures (khan does). He usually reads of his lecture slides which are pretty much word for word copies of the textbook. He's probably easier than the others but not nearly as good of a prof
Professor Hossain taught me Econ 2210 and Econ 2261 courses. The topics Professor Hossain discussed are helping me to understand many topics in my graduate courses. I am taking this opportunity to express my gratitude.
REALLY HARD ACCENT, don't try to understand if you are a bad english speaker. Nice prof overall, not though on exams.
Hossain is a gem! lectures are bland by everything is very straight forward and exams are fair. He does genuinely care about his students success.
Took this course last semester, the highlight of university was when someone asked what the midterm average was, Hossain looks directly at him, pauses for a good couple of minutes and finally says: "some people got 100, some people got 80, many people got 40" funny professor, sometimes difficult to understand, and hard course if you don't know econ
Do not take this class at 9am if your not an early person, this teachers heavy accent and difficulty to understand can get you angry. Since my highschool taught most of this course material already it wasn't bad but I can't imagine this class without that knowledge.
Amazing lectures. Engaging and thought-provoking. His feedback during office hours was invaluable. Thank you Professor Hossain for everything you have done for our class
I could barely understand him during lectures. He tries really hard which is nice, but he has a thick accent and on top of that he talks really quietly. The videos he posted for extra help were not useful at all and none of it was on the exam. The midterm 2 and final content was really tough and I didn't feel prepared for it.
Hard to understand in lectures
The course content is great, but in every lecture you can't understand what he's going over because of his strong accent
Once you get past h
midterm is hard
it's a nice professor
Had him for first year Econ, super nice guy, willing to help at all times and installs confidence in students who doubt themselves. Always gives tips to succeed and overall, great prof.
Very kind and passionate about course material. Go to lectures and do a few practice problems and you'll do fine.
Hossain is a caring prof and is well respected. The reason for the low mark is that it is very hard to understand his lectures due to his thick accent, although he tries his best it was very difficult for me to grasp what he was saying, I would recommend looking for a different 1021A prof.
Professor Hossain is the best, he cares a lot about his students and constantly encourages them. His way of teaching is memorable and very straightforward, simplifying difficult concepts.
If you've taken econ before, you'll be fine w Hossain. Just know the slides and you'll do well. It's hard to understand him sometimes which is why I say you'll be ok if you have a background in econ already. If econ is new to you, my rec is to learn w a diff prof bc its a subject that can be hard to grasp at first. His midterms/final r not that bad
Caring professor and straightforward exams. Do yourself a favor and buy the textbook and MyLab. Read the textbook and do the myLab questions to prep for exams. Had a great semester!
While Professor Hossain is encouraging and caring towards students, his exams are by no means reflective of what is taught in the lectures. A lot of self studying is needed to even get a passing grade. Don't even get me started on when he tries to teach using the chalkboard... get ready to be lost three seconds within the start of class.
Please do yourself a favour and save yourself from taking this class. Prof. Hossain tries his best to teach students but it is incredibly difficult to understand his lectures if this is your first time taking econ. Not to mention, having your final grade consist of only three assessments (with the final being worth 50%) is unfair and ridiculous.
He has a very heavy accent and reads off his slides. You can do just fine if you skip his lectures. Just make sure to read his slides/textbook and do the practice problems he posts and the mylab.
Hossain is a solid prof and a great person. He cares about you as a student. MicroEcon is the wake up call for most first year MOS students. I went to all Lec & Tut, bc he uses examples that will be on exam verbatim. Make sure to review PPT after. I got 62 on 1st MT then turned it around once I figured out the study habits that worked for me GL:)
Prof Hossain is a good teacher and great person. He is very caring and will do his best to help you (within a pretty rigid administration/faculty). | finished with over a 90 without going to many lectures, but would still recommend going as you can just do practice questions if he's reading off the slides. Definitely the best micro prof. 340/350
Has a strong accent, but after you get used to it it's fine. Care about his students, office hours are great, exams are generally easy.
Great prof, for sure the best you can get for Econ 1021.
Hossain is incredibly hard to understand; however, his first two midterms were super easy, and anyone who put in a few hours before the exam could easily get high nineties by reading the textbook and doing My Lab. Most of the questions came straight out of the My Lab practice questions provided.
Best! Highly recommend
he is the best one!!!
He is the best one !!!
My goat
Awesome professor super funny, engaging and really wants everyone to do well.
Would highly recommend
Great professor, great guy, great lectures. If you want to succeed, make sure you do question banks and read the textbook (it isn't that long). Go to his office hours if you need help, he'll explain things properly if you need more help. Exams are fair, study well and you'll do better than I did.
Good prof very caring and gives good feedback
Literally cannot understand him at all. Read the lecture slides yourself and save your time going to his class!
Can't even understand him. Nice person but the accent is almost impossible to decipher. Would recommend literally anyone else or just reading the PowerPoint slides on your own time. He over complicates everything and just does the most sometimes. He is very passionate about economics but I think he just learnt the material different than us.
Hossain is the most caring prof I have had thus far. He genuinely wants to see his students do well, and if you put effort into studying the contents his tests are very straight forward, aimed to make students succeed. If he has an error on an exam he opts to give us the mark rather than removing the question, just speaks for the type of prof he is
his accent is kinda hard to decipher, but he is a great prof, his assessments are fair and he gives clear, helpful instructions
Hossain is overall a pretty good professor as he cares about his students doing well and is extremely helpful!
Prof Hossain is a very sweet prof and cares about his students. His tests are far easier than the other Econ profs, however his accent made it quite hard to understand what he was saying a majority of the time and I had to resort to learning on my own from his lecture slides, which are very useful.
Super kind professor. He really cares about you and if you do the work you will do well. Unfortunately he has a really thick accent and the videos online aren't much better. THERE ARE SUBTITLES THOUGH!!! USE THEM. fair exam but I still struggled because I put off studying. If you do study though you will do well.
Amazing professor, he posts clear study guidelines and if you do his MyLabs you'll be fine, econ is not a "bird" bird but it's still a bird
Bud gave us a whole ted talk about how we could do good on the first lecture. Idk found it funny but overall really easy prof his midterms are insanely easy you could definitely get 95+ on them and the final exam is a small jump in difficulty but still relatively easy. He will baby you to free marks gang ngl.
He does care for his students and was very fair on the quizzes and midterms, although the final definitely did not reflect the teachings nor was it even close to the same difficulty as the midterms, I know a few people including myself whose grade dropped 10% from the final worth 50%.
Definitely a caring prof who will tell you exactly what to study for on quizzes and midterms, but the final was a huge step up in difficulty and the syllabus for it was extremely misleading (study everything). Thick accent, but posts lecture notes and midterms are pretty easy. Take him over Bruno for Microeconomics.
Okay lecturer, hard to hear him at times and his accent is a little strong but you get used to it. He is organized, gives clear instructions on what to do and how to succeed, and tests are relatively straightforward if you study well.
heavy accent, can't understand anything, totally studied by myself and use knowledges in highschool Fortunately the two midterms are not hard, handled it pretty well after a bit of self study the final is bit harder tho, detailed questions asked so be prepared
can't understand him and need to read the textbook thoroughly for good grades
Prof Hossain is a caring instructor who breaks down concepts well. Attend lectures, do practice problems, and use resources like unstuckstudy - it really helps simplify the content. Overall, a solid micro course.
By far the worst professor I've ever had. His exams were ok but I cannot stress enough how hard he is to understand. His accent is so strong that I literally could not even make a guess as to what he was saying about 90% of the time. I did not gain any benefit from attending lectures and I would recommend that you take literally any other Econ prof
Easy exam, nice prof, can't comprehend his accent during lectures tho
Truly is hard to understand. It was frustrating especially when learning a new subject. I think it is fair to expect the lectures to be more understandable.
Professor Hossain is kind and genuinely supportive. He clearly wants his students to succeed and appreciates consistent attendance, he'll even recognize you for it. He also offers practice questions that closely match the midterm, making it easier to prepare. Even putting in a modest amount of effort can take you a long way in this course.
I genuinely think that he is an amazing prof (it's just that sometimes it can be hard to understand his accent). His exams are based of the things he mentioned in class, and even though attendance for me this semester wasn't mandatory, I do think that it will be beneficial for you if you could attend all his classes.
Easy course and easy exam. Hossain is GOATed for not taking attendance. Might be somewhat challenging for those who've never done econ before but all concepts were super easy + primary school math.
He really cares about his students' understanding and he spends a good amount of time on practice questions during the lectures to ensure you know how to apply the course content to the exam. Exams are very fair if you read all the chapters, attend lectures, and do the MyLab. I had never taken econ before and I though it was super doable.
He's a good foundational prof but he's too hard to understand
Was a great prof with very fair exams. A bit difficult to follow and understand lectures at times but you can tell that he loves his job and really cares about his students.
I could not understand a word he said, partly due to a strong accent and partly because he mumbles. His slides are also just straight from the textbook and he reads straight off of them. Your best bet is to just study the textbook since all exams are based off of it, pearson plus is definitely worth it to study from.
Content is doable, but he is extremely difficult to understand.
Kind of like unable to speak english properly and teaches the subjects at a very basic level. But his exams are also pretty easy as long as u reread the slides, do tutorial work, and do the textbook. If u try and write the midterms purely based off how he does stuff in class you'll prob get 60's. Didn't study for midterm 1 or 2 and got a 90 and 85.
MY GOSH! HE'S TESTS ARE SOO HARD! IT'S ALMOST LIKE INTENTIONALLY WORDING IT THAT WAY! DONT BELIEVE THAT READING ONLY THE LECTURES NOTES ARE FINE!
Yo this guy has the craziest accent I've ever heard. Stopped going to lectures because you can't understand a single word he says. For a review session class, he spent a 50 mins lecture on 5 questions for us to review. Told us that exam questions would be similar to in class ones but hellll NAHHH. How is this guy even hired.
He's a really nice guy, but don't be fooled when he says, "the midterm will be easy." Lies, definitely study. He's got a pretty thick accent, but after the first week of lectures, you get used to it. He always ends class early. He's pretty good at explaining concepts and is also available outside of lectures.
Not the best teacher if you learn a lot during the lectures. The slides are very clear and if you understand them, you will do great on the tests. Overall, the evaluations were a bit harder than expected, but a pretty chill prof.
Most people don't go to a single lecture, because they are so slow and not useful. He does 5 practice qs per lecture and sometimes the answers are wrong. Just read the PPTs and do the practice qs. Don't buy the textbook!! All textbook content is in the PPTs it's a waste of money.
Impossible to understand. Very heavy content wise
