He is a good chem teacher and his iclicker questions are always on tests and quizzes. EXACT SAME PROBLEMS. Most of the questions he does in lecture are on the test. He has a little bit of an accent but other than that he is really good.
Mr. Islam was an overall good teacher. He usually tends to use both his powerpoint or his own notes in class to teach in lecture. His tests and quizzes are very easy compared to other lecture teachers.
Pretty good professor. Follow his lectures and discussion worksheet and you should do fine on the exams. Clicker points for attendance. I skip most lectures and was still able to get a B. Posts all lectures online and has fairly easy tests (80% of exams are math based questions though) compared to other professors.
Honestly, he isn't that bad. He makes a few funny remarks from time to time. He isn't the best at teaching but he'll get the point across. Iclickers are random asf so come to class and if you pay attention and study before an exam and or quiz you'll do fine. Also reuses questions a lot... SO KEEP YOUR OLD QUIZZES AND EXAMS
I know now what to do when I retake to get an A so listen up: exam short answer questions are from lectures. Sapling hw & discussion worksheets & modules questions aren't in any exam/quiz. Final exam is brutal! Final exam is EVERY old test/quiz question and lecture question example (not *really* 8 short answer questions like he said it would be)
Decent professor. He seems to care about lecturing however, since it was his first time lecturing he wasn't the most clear. His exams were easy, but his quizzes were brutal. Exam questions were 80%+ from his review questions he gave which are found in the lecture. He curved the class 5% + curved many exams. Spent alot of time learning from book
Has an accent which is understandable at best. His tests were the worst. Get one question wrong and it drops you a letter grade an a half. Partial credit? Barely. Had multiple choice questions that were worth a few points, but the main questions t meant passing or failing. Takes attendance right when class starts. Dont be late. Take Jursich.
TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. Yes, he doesn't teach well (you might need to self study a lot especially if you haven't taken AP Chem). However, compared to to the other chem professors his tests are sooo easy. He grades leniently and gives you a lot of supplemental materials. Theres multiple choice too and his tests are literally all from the discussion HWs
He is one of the Best Profs I have ever seen. He tries his best to make things understandable to the students. If you are late or not serious, you will not get good grade. But if you are serious, you can learn a lot from his class and most importantly, you will most probably get good grade.
My man Islam was lit. He gave a great curve at the end that got me an A. Study for the tests and you're set. Honestly you should take him over Jursich and others, his tests are so easy. Yeah, he has a fob accent but you get used to it, stop tweakin. And he was pretty good eye candy too if you know what I mean ;) -(just kidding if it wasn't obvious)
Islam is a reasonable. His explanations are not the best, but the power points that he gives you are well laid out and you can easily teach yourself off of them. Quizzes are kinda hard. The tests, while kinda long, are super easy. questions are the exact same as practice problems with different numbers. Class ended up being curved heavily.
Seriously one of the best teachers I've had at UIC. He is one of the most understanding professors I have encountered. If he thinks there is an unfair question on the quiz or exam, he will give the points back to everyone and explain the problem thoroughly. Lectures can be a little boring but chemistry isn't fun. Really cares about his students.
He's honestly a great teacher if you pay attention but he tends to word all of his exam questions weirdly. If you don't understand what it's asking then make sure you clarify with him because your interpretation is most likely wrong. Other than that, the exams and quizzes are pretty straight forward and he's a fun guy.
The exams can be hard and separating the lab from the lecture has doubled the work!! Lab final exam, practicals! Time management is a big problem for full-time students. The class was NOT curved in the end & many failed!
Quite honestly, Islam is pretty unintelligible and reads off of slides. The class itself is quite easy, to the point of being intolerably boring.
Professor Islam's lectures are well explained. Most of the quiz & exam material is similar to the problems from the discussion worksheets. Most probably he curves the exams & quizzes! Much better than other chemistry professors at uic !
Professor has accent. iClicker questions in almost every lecture. He is very nice & knows the material. Posts everything on blackboard so no note-taking required. Posts study guide for quizzes and exams. Curves are not given in this class. Pay attention in class & you should be fine. If not look over blackboard material outside of class. EASY A.
By far one of the better Chem 122 professors, his lectures are sometimes confusing but if you take time to understand what he says it'll be a relatively easy class. iClickers are counted for points so don't skip class. Never needed to open the book tbh, just look over slides and do his practice problems before exams and you'll be aight.
He has iclicker for every lecture, posts everything on blackboard. Lectures are just him doing textbook problems, you don't really have to pay attention. He curved most exams because they were fairly difficult and lengthy. His tests are mainly conceptual based with few math problems, if you're better at math then take Jursich. Overall he was okay.
I had him when it was his first time teaching the course. I had to teach myself because his lectures were very unclear, and he wasn't very strong in explaining concepts. That's why it's important to have the textbook if you have him as a professor, so that you can use it to help you follow what's going on in the class.
Unclear lectures, and not good at explaining concepts. Want to pass? USE THE TEXTBOOK.
Dr. Islam is the best professor for chemistry 122. He curved every single exam, and his quizzes and exams are just questions from the lecture slides and discussion worksheets. He is very friendly and understanding, and believes that "No student should suffer in his class just because of a disorganized and irresponsible TA." TAKE HIM FOR CHEM 122!
he changes test last minute with a 3-day notice. Also, his lectures are not clear.
His test are nothing like the slides or lecture notes, its all from the text book.
His exams are never like his course materials. All I do is study and homework, I have no social life and I still manage to fail his exams. Mean and doesn't take into account family matters. If I could him a negative rating I would.
Dr. Islam is one of the best chem professors at uic. His quizzes and exams are basically from the textbook questions and the discussion worksheets. If you study what he tells you to, typically the lecture slides, discussion worksheets and the problems from the back of the book you will do good. Pay attention to lectures bc his i clickers r from it.
lots of grading mistakes but thats due to TAs which is annoying. READ THE BOOK, i got an a, and its because questions on the quizzes and tests are very VERY similar to the example ones in the book. do iclicker, go to disscussion for points. overall good class if you work hard
Lectures are very boring and he drags them during the first part of the semester. He yells "YOU NEED TO EHSTUDY" into the mic a lot. Has an accent but its not really a problem. Wants his students to pass but you have to work for it. Most of the quizzes and exams come from the book and discussion worksheets. He's okay and best option for Chem 122.
Dr. Islam is a a very good choice for gen chem. He takes the time in lecture to explain things and gives examples for literally every type of problem you have to attend lecture. Honestly, the only issue with him is that his exams are so easy, they throw you off. Study his discussion sheets and you'll do fine.
I took his class during spring. It was a Saturday class so lectures were long. Assignments helped a lot with in term quizzes and exams. At the end of a class we took the final exam, and I noticed that questions were very similar to what he gave us throughout the semester, so you better study them. Study and you will get an A
DONT TAKE HIM EVER
Honestly, I only took him bc he curved every quiz/exam but not anymore. He was an okay prof. Exams were pretty straight forward; I just didn't like his fill in the blanks questions. It would ask to define this or why this would happen. Everything else was covered in discussion. Also, go to tutoring at the SLC or go to LARES' chem tutor for help!
His testing style worked for me. Some multiple choice, some fill in the blank (mostly conceptual) and some math based "short answer" problems. Online homework. I suggest looking over your tests because I found multiple grading errors. Unavoidable when 10 different TA's are grading a single test. I went from an F to a high C on one of my exams.
This was my second time taking Chem 122 with Prof. Islam. Fall semester I did not study and ended up not taking the final bc I knew I wouldn't pass regardless so I retook the class this spring. Honestly, as much as I hate to admit it, studying will actually help you pass the class. Make sure you do all the homework and go to discussion.
It was just bad. Dont take him if you have other professors to chose from. Hes not understanding when you have to miss a test (theyre always late around 5 on Fridays) even with a valid excuse. If you have to take him, Goodluck youll probably fail.
Dr. Islam is not a bad professor. He knows what he is doing when it comes to Chemistry. However, his class is very lecture heavy and VERY uninteresting. He also doesn't show up on time for scheduled office hours. He has the TA's grade tests and quizzes, which is fine, but I lacked that professor evaluation of my work.
great professor. do the things he tells u to do before quizzes and exams and you'll be fine.
His class is as simple as it gets. Do the work that he assigns and you'll do fine. He's pretty funny sometimes too tbh.
Class revolves around concept, rather than math. Utilize the online textbook, as well as discussion, and you'll do fine. Don't expect to take any quiz or test for more than twenty minutes without being interrupted to correct a "small typo." (That includes the final, by the way.) Overall, he's okay, but not for everyone.
He's a pretty good professor but his lectures tend to get boring and it's very easy to zone out when you are in a huge lecture hall with some friends. My advice is to do all of the homework and make sure you understand all of the concepts. You need to study until it becomes second nature. On the plus side, he curves like crazy! And he's really nice
His lectures have almost everything you need to get a decent grade on exams. Overall, if you can understand and take notes and do the example problems in the chapter, actually try to understand the online HW, and do discussion worksheets with effort to UNDERSTAND you will be overprepared for the exams.
Tough class, but you'll feel good once you finish it. He also curves exams which is helpful.
Really not a bad teacher or a bad guy, hes very strict tho if he even sees you talking hell probably stop lecture and ask if you want to leave. Just pay attention well during class (although you're gonna spend a lot of time teaching yourself) and you'll do fine its a curved class.
Professor Islam is a nice guy. He's definitely tailored to teach CHEM 124! His quizzes and exams aren't that bad but you should probably study at least a few days before the exam so you don't mess up. He curves the class at the end of the semester and if you see him in his office hours, he's will do his best to help you out. Overall he's the best
For tests, study the questions at the back of the book as well as the discussion worksheets. You should also double check the points you get on the tests because the TA's mark things wrong all the time, so if they don't change it-go to Dr. Islam. He's really funny, but honestly, the best way to learn is to teach yourself from the textbook!
Really hard class but an ok professor.
He is friendly. He spends a lot of time explaining basic stuff then continue to build with harder problems. To get an A, try having a background by reading the book then attend the lecture and take notes. For the exam, chem 122 students needs to do the book example problems and discussion worksheets then review with his lecture slides. Great prof!
Dr Islam is a great professor. Total 3 quiz and 3 exams. Review past exams, discussion worksheets, and in class problems before the quiz and exam. Exams are pretty straightforward. If you put time then A is achievable. Curves the class based on how students did on the final.
Dr. Islam proves there are still good people in the world. HE CARES about his students and will help you if you're serious and try. This class is not easy. There was a lot of sweat and tears, but in the end the professor saw I cared a lot and did my best. I leave this class with great respect for the professor. DO NOT LOSE HOPE, EVEN IN THE END.
He's very rude, rushes the material, disorganized. Makes too many mistakes on exams and answer keys. Hosted a helpful review session before Exam 1 and only did another one for the final. His exams are unpredictable in difficulty and are graded too harshly. Read the book, skim notes, practice problems, office hours, iclickers. No extra credit.
One of the worst professors I have ever had. Hes a terrible lecturer and although majority of the department is complete garbage, he takes the cake. Unclear on whats on his exams and all our averages were Fs, as if thats something to be proud of as a professor. The entire class you must teach yourself everything, showing up is pointless.
If you want an A, be prepared to look over the slides and the book to get to the goal. The slides aren't great, so you'll have to find ways to study up the material to get the hang of the things taught. I DO NOT recommend skipping clickers or discussion, as they are easy points to buffer for a good grade.
Islam was ok. I felt like he just rushed through topics so I just had to self teach. Make sure you go to class and discussion, the iclicker + attendance add up and can really help if you are borderline. Curved the class like crazy at the end. A shame that exam averages were always D/F, says a lot about his teaching if the class is doing poorly.
I took Prof. Islam for gen chem2 and he was probs the best chem prof I had in my life! He made everything so simple! Just go over the textbook questions of each chapter and you'll literally do great on tests! He also provides study guides, do those because the problems are so similar!
Prof Islam is a solid choice. He does a good job explaining concepts and uses examples. Sometimes I think he feels the material is really easy so doesnt go into depth too much which can be frustrating but overall the material is pretty easy. IClicker heavy so go to lecture. His accent takes a minute to get used to but Overall a decent class
Islam is a decent man and all of his exams focus heavily on past quizzes or discussion worksheets. I think he was pretty decent and did not give unbelievably hard exams. You have a to do a lot of studying on your own, but if you go in for help, he will help you.
Out of all the chem professors Id go with Islam again. Hes a solid choice and I dont believe his exams/quizzes are as tough as the other professors
I thought he was a pretty good professor, because I've heard much worse about the others. I was really pissed that he didnt curve the final though. I was so close to get an A, and he didnt even let us know about the grading scale due to this whole Covid situation. He didnt even reply to my emails.
Hes by far the most unpleasant experience that I had at UIC. Doesnt speak clearly, doesnt know his own material. I got an A only because I had taken CHEM in high school. Also, all his questions in the exams can be found on chegg! But if youre looking to learn, then rely in yourself.
Like I said, hes by far the most unpleasant experience that I had at UIC. Doesnt speak clearly, doesnt know his own material. I got an A only because I had taken CHEM in high school. Also, all his questions in the exams can be found on chegg! But if youre looking to learn, then rely in yourself.
You pretty much need to be self-taught. Theres weekly HW, whose solutions can be found online. The HW in the text is super easy. The discussions need to be attempted. All questions in all exams/quizzes are on chegg. I wish i had a professor who had a bit of expertise. UIC has professors who do a lot of research, unfortunately, not this guy.
if you are good at guessing answers, then you can pretty much get an A in this class. since it was all online, all questions in all quizzes/exams are multiple choice. make sure you are good at googling the questions and have a chegg account. no point in attending lectures and he knows that too (because there's no attendance).
For context, he was my professor for CHEM 124 for 1 semester and 1 summer class during 2020 pandemic. His accent/poor pronunciation was an annoying obstacle to understanding the excess of concepts that he teaches in lectures and his class had mistakes that inconvenienced students. He gave me a F during a pandemic when I was 9 points from passing.
Worst professor I've ever had.
I KNOW he knows most of his students are failing, and I KNOW he doesn't care. The way half his exam questions are incorrect, doesn't show up to his own live lectures, and overall has no interest in his students shows that he doesn't care at all.
He is really caring and gives time in his office hours where you can also ask about your grade. If you get better than class average, you will receive B or A. All instructors from CHEM 124 proctor exams with respondous. If you don't study, not attentive, just do exam without preparation, don't blame him. I listened to him and I am getting B.
I took this class in fall of 2020 (when everything was fully online). Not even the strongest coffee on this planet can keep you awake when you watch his pre-recorded/live lectures. His exams were extremely hard, and if it wasn't for YouTube and other outside resources, I would have dropped this class since the first exam. He does curve though.
I will never take a class with this professor again. I received an A in CHEM 122 the semester before and definitely won't be receiving an A in this class. Doesn't seem to like his job, extremely messy lecture videos, and doesn't explain things thoroughly at all. He says to not drop the class because it gets easier after the first exam. Not the case
I took him Fall 2020, although I passed with an A in the class I would still say he was just an ok professor. He is not bad like the others are saying but he definitely is not good either. Pretty much had to watch 6 lectures to get an A in the class. 3 syn and 3 asyn, the syn. Just had to put in the work, only got an A cuz of the huge curves.
Not a decent professor. He is kinda hard to understand. The class makes you work hard.
I can tell he's passionate about chemistry but unfortunately, he was not meant to teach. I basically taught myself the entire course through youtube videos and used his posted lecture slides as a guide on what I had to learn. He was very bad at introducing new concepts and the notes he made during lecture were just scribbles.
He is not meant to teach chemistry, it is clear that he understands the content, but he expects his students to do problems in less than 2 minutes when he is unable to find the correct answer. Goes way too fast. I understand he tries his best, but when majority of the class says they do not understand/has an issue, he is not understanding at all.
He is a solid choice. He was probably the best chem prof I had in my life. He made everything so simple! He doesn't give unbelievably hard exams, but chem124 itself is harder than chem122. His suggestions in the class helped me a lot.
He's a typical Chemistry teacher; if you don't know the subject, you have to read the textbook and go to office hours as necessary. He doesn't just read off his presentations, and he explains concepts moderately well. Reading the textbook outside of class would help with exams and quizzes, but is not totally necessary if you can already understand.
The class has a lot of content and hes not that great explaining it. Often makes mistakes when solving examples and even gave wrong tables on slideshow and participation questions.
Lectures begin with the basic conceptual topic then progress into harder problems. Some advice- read the relavent chapter before going into the lecture and do the example problems (it will help get those iClicker points). For exams, review the lecture slides and understand the discussion worksheets. He's a solid professor.
Prof lectures by reading off slides and attempting problems than messing up. He has an accent so it's hard to understand sometimes. Did most of my understanding from the book and TA/tutors. SWORE he gave 3 mins for Iclicker but it was less than 1 min. Very understanding when you email him though, and always available outside of class.
he is obviously very passionate about Chemistry, but not at all teaching. If you want to learn, do not take him.
Listen, chem is tough. I initially hadn't liked Dr. Islam, but throughout the semester, I learned to really respect him and his style of teaching. He explains things pretty thoroughly and does many practice problems with the class. Reading the book and completing discussion sheets are vital for success in this course. You got this!
Dr.Islam honestly wants all his students to pass. Yes chem is tough but if you read and put in effort and go to class you should be fine. He also tells you what types of problems are going to be in exams.
Worst professor I've ever had. 200 points for the final in person during COVID, but refused to give back the test because of "health risks." Pls take it at a community college. Exams are worth 600 points. Curve helps. Tells students to "look up topics" if he doesn't have time to cover it. Not understanding. Do practice hw and organic tutor on yt.
Tbh, I don't understand the hate towards Dr. Islam. The only bad thing about the class is that there's some homework that isn't relevant for the tests but just complete these asap. Like he says during lectures, to get high scores on tests just go through his lectures and practice problems he gives a couple of days before the exams.
Pretty average lecturer. I-Clicker is important (random through the week) and I'd honestly say try to learn all the content yourself because he does not know how to keep the lecture from running short on time. I don't like the limited office hours he had after the final exam(2 hours only on one day).
Chem is going to be tough. Lectures are slower if you read the textbook before class, understand the problems in his lecture notes bc those are the problems that are similar to exams. Don't slack on the homework bc those add up- I did and I was
Honestly, he was just awful to me from the start. Would not help with homework or be accommodating. He was also rude. He clearly is very passionate about chemistry which is great but, would be difficult to understand because he would expect students to understand things that were not taught.
has a thick accent and literally stutters over his explanations, I think he would make a good teacher if his accent and language barrier didn't exist, but as it holds now I wouldn't recommend taking his class. But what other chem 122 professors are there?
Dr. Islam is a funny yet professional character. You have to pay attention during lectures and read the textbook chapters to survive the class.
All he does during lectures is write out problems and solves them. He doesn't take time to explain anything and just reads of the slides.
It is a stressful, quick-paced class. Islam gives decent lectures but expects everyone to understand a unit in less than a week and doesn't always explain the best. Expect many tests, sometimes a few weeks apart, weekly online HW, and iclicker for attendance. Also- you can expect the class to have a decent curve at the end of the year.
I think the coursework is what makes this class very difficult, but Professor Islam did well with teaching the material. Everything that is in the lectures you should take note of and study, as it will most likely be in the exams.
Dr. Islam expects you to read the book and do the practice problems to be really successful in the course. You have to teach yourself to be successful. He would go really fast and sometimes he would have trouble explaining difficult concepts. A lot of times he would over explain concepts and it could annoying for many of us who already understood.
