Exams are incredibly difficult. But he teaches well.
Great teacher. He tells random jokes and stores which makes the class enjoyable. He gives you a lot of examples and knows how to really teach. Lectures are not mandatory but since it's a statistics class, you should go. He does have a slight accent but it's not hard to understand. I highly recommend him as a professor.
Overall, great professor for ECON-317. Whatever notes he writes on the board are usually good enough for the tests. I never used the textbook unless he assigned HW problems from it. He's really helpful, and visiting his office hours can help. Other than that, go to every class, take good notes, and you should be fine.
I love Safarzadeh. I did really bad on the first exam because I didn't show up to lecture and didn't do the homeworks, but I talked to him after that lecture and he said as long as I show up to class and improve, he would forget about my first test. Overall he is a very understanding professor and he wants to help his students. Good joker too.
Nice professor but gives extremely difficult exams. I don't know why he makes the exams insanely long (you'll need full two hours cuz there are at least 60 MC plus bunch of graphs) and impossible. The material is not that bad but he makes it ten times harder. Nice guy but definitely not an easy A class.
He gives insane tests. He gives questions based on graphs which he doesn't exlpain correctly. You cannot look at your midterm in case you think you got graded wrong. Jokes are not very funny and he is old. It seems he already taught the same material 1000 times.
Easy A for this class. Just go to lecture and you basically don't need to read textbooks at all. He is very nice that if you explain reasons to him, you can take exams, quiz, or do presentations at any other time.
Professor Safarzadeh is the best professor I've ever had in USC. He is extremely humourous. He does not really use the book so you don't have to buy it. However, I would suggest you to attend all/most of his classes or you will fall behind. His tests are rather straight forward and definitely go to his office hours.
hes a good professor but sometimes he can go a little cray cray, only because hes old and a little forgetful. if you do all the homework you have nothing to worry about because his tests are usually exact replicas of the hw. i got an A- in the class despite the fact that i did pretty badly on 1 midterm so i would definitely recommend it.
The lectures are pretty boring and he is easy to tune out. The grades are extremely skewed. I put in a lot of effort studying and still don't do well on the exams. All tests are scantron and come "from lecture" though the questions are 5 times more confusing than anything we've learned in class. I would not recommend this class.
He might sound monotone but he jokes around with his students. I didn't do well in the beginning because I sat at the back and i just dozed off when he was lecturing. but he was really helpful during office hours. do well on the homework and you'll be fine for the midterms. study his powerpoints..he doesn't use the book at all.
This is the second course I took w/ Safarzadeh, and his teaching style requires diligent notes and that's it. He's very passionate about making sure you understand stats, and don't just memorize formulas. All his classes do group ppt presentations which are not hard w/o procrastination. Also he's hilarious in an endearing grandpa way!
Safarzadeh has a dry humor and slight accent that prevents everyone from recognizing his personality, but this is a passionate and hilarious professor. Really wants you to have a good understanding of the material. Take good notes and study the homework before tests and you'll be fine. Barely used the textbook.
Great professor, take him!
ridiculous class. nobody ever knows whats going on. thought i did well on the last two tests and ended up getting a B and a D. he is the only professor for this class unfortunately. the only people who do well in this course are people who have taken some statistics before.
Rarely uses the textbook, and he teaches it differently from the book so it can be a bit confusing for people that are more comfortable that rely on the book. Very accessible with office hours and his way of teaching is a dummied down version of stats. Overall it's not as hard as Rashidian and the class was enjoyable.
such a nice guy, never uses the textbook but uses his powerpoints every day and they really help for the test. you have to know ALOT for the tests but he's helpful and truly wants you to do well
Absolutely LOVE him! Such a great professor. He really wants you to do well in his class and he will work with you until you understand the material! Going to office hours help a lot! Also he never uses the textbook. I actually returned mine and still did well! Attend lecture and take good notes!
Prof Safarzadeh is not easy but he is a GREAT professor! He truly knows economics well and I learned a lot from his course. I wish I could take more courses with him.
He is GREAT. He explains concepts well, provides a lot of in class practice so you're not surprised on the tests, and his midterms are not cumulative. He barely touches the textbook, so take notes diligently. He is one of the most helpful professors in the Econ dpt. His classes are the perfect balance of getting good grades and actually learning!<3
Good luck with the 10 page midterms and final. Yikes
He is such a relaxed stats professor. He punctuates classes with funny anecdotes and is so approachable all throughout the course. He's the best stats professor offered by USC because he prefers practical applications and his tests are manageable.
My favorite prof at SC! He explains the concepts extremely well. The tests are EXACTLY what he taught us in class. Listen to lectures and you'll be fine. But you can read the text to understand it better. He's very nice, very funny and EXTREMELY helpful during office hours. At least 5-6 kids are at his office at all times and he helps everyone.
My favorite Econ class thus far, and it's ECONOMETRICS....that says something about the professor. He goes above and beyond to make sure everyone understands and as long as you attend class you'll be good to go for the exams. Very enjoyable class for a subject that could be dreadful with other professors. TAKE HIM if you get the chance.
I was terrified to take stats but it ended up being my favorite class. Safarzadeh is really helpful and hilarious. Lots of practice problems in class and almost weekly homework assignments. Four non-cumulative exams and one group "project." Attend class and do the homeworks and you can get an A
He is super helpful. Just make sure to attend his lectures.
Go to class, take notes, clear things up in office hours and you will get at least an A-. Do problems sets he gives you as he bases the tests on these (very similar problems).
Really does love his students. BEST professor I've had at USC and I hate stats. NEVER ever had a professor have a line out the door each time they hold office hours, but it's because he cares and help you understand the material. Go to class everyday, listen, take notes, and do the hw and it's an easy B. A if you put in a little extra time.
Patient and meticulous. The best Econ professor I've ever had at USC. He has four tests in total, but none of them is cumulative, and they are all very similar to the homework assigned. Highly recommend him!
ECON 352- best professor offered. His classes are structured in a logical manner he prepares you for the midterms very well. Not boring at all. No test is cumulative and tests are similar to sample quizzes.
Prof. Safarzadeh is a very nice guy, but often does not explain Econ concepts clearly. Bought the textbook, but never used it. No homework, and tests are easy if you're good at memorization. Would not recommend this class to someone with no previous Macro knowledge. Class really depends on self-studying, and his office hours are pretty packed.
Be aware, this feedback is deceptive. I switched into his class thinking he was one of the better professors for Econ352X (which might actually still be the case). But he has a very monotone voice which makes his lectures impossible to listen to. He doesn't really elaborate much off of the ppts. When he cracks a joke, he's hilarious but it's rare.
This class was pretty easy, but since it is easy, everyone did pretty well on tests. His grading criteria is pretty unclear and no one knew what their grade was until there posted. No homework. 4 quizzes, 3 midterms, and a final. Gives out practice tests which are similar to the midterms. Go to office hours. They're packed but he's really helpful.
No homework, 4 quizzes, 3 midterms, group project, and a final. Group project is simple. Quizzes are usually given a class or two before the midterm which is really good practice. He goes pretty fast through concepts so if you are confused simply ask! What matters to him is not just your grades, but your progress and effort in the class.
No homework, 4 quizzes, 3 midterms, 1 final, 1 group project. All you need to know for your exams are in his lectures, so come to class and take detailed notes (even things you think aren't necessary, unless he says so). He helps students every time, even if tests were hard (esp. finals). but he made me like econ :) come w/ a positive mind it helps
It's true; Safarzadeh is a very nice person and if you go to office hours he will help you. But his teaching style is very frustrating. He makes assumptions that you know the basics (in a entry class) and does not bother to explain things in depth. His tests are graded harshly. Does not follow textbook closely. Basically a self-teaching course.
Best professor at USC! Always willing to help! Don't need textbook, just pay attention in class, take notes, study exam practice, and you will get an A!
Very nice and smart guy. You learn a lot too!
Professor Safarzadeh is the sweetest professor ever! Be sure to go to his office hours if you don't understand something in class - he is super helpful. Can sometimes go off into unrelated tangents in class, but otherwise he is the best professor I've had. No need to buy the book - all the info is in his slides and midterms are similar to quizzes.
Great professor. You need to attend class, study for the exams/quizzes, and you will be good. No homework aside from one group project that is not harshly graded if you come up with something decent. He does a good job of explaining complex concepts and is more than willing to help you outside of class. One of the best professors I've had here.
Professor Safarzadeh really does his best to make the course as enjoyable and reasonable as possible. Take the time to talk with him outside of class. He has a lot of great things to say. His tests can be difficult, but as long as you contribute to class discussions, attend class, and participate, you should have no problem getting at least an A-.
Safarzadeh is a nice guy, and he is very knowledgeable about macroeconomics. The thing is, his lectures are just really boring. If you ask him questions, he will give you great answers and explain concepts carefully. Quizzes and tests can be difficult, but if you read the slides multiple times, you should be able to get at least a B in the class.
Got 99 in linear algebra,100 in Statistic and A in Econometrics, but B+ at this class. Tests were easy. He asked 1*0? style questions. And I literary lost over 20 points because of those. Students were standing in a line to ask him questions while taking the tests! Office hours were sooo crowded. It was easy to be confused. Didn't learn a lot.
He's very smart but just reads off the powerpoints and isn't very clear when he's teaching. It's not easy to understand the material because he explains it in a confusing way.
Lecture heavy, but a pretty good class. He provides every resource necessary to succeed. He makes his slides available, gives practice problems, and says how he recommends studying. Doing well in this class is definitely possible. Professor is mostly nice to talk to and fair with his tests
a very kind man and teacher. provides materials to succeed in the class, but a bit disorganized. however he is extremely accessible with any questions and looks for his students to succeed as well.
The professor is really nice whenever in class or after class. He could always answer your questions patiently. And the exams are not easy. The only thing you need to keep in mind is to review each part of the assignments and course notes before the exam and be careful with each question.
Positive: Textbook does a decent job explaining complicated topics. Also shows you how to use R to do certain calculations Negative: Textbook is filled with mistakes; professor doesn't directly answer questions in class; unwilling to answer questions outside class/via email; I find him very unapproachable. He is condescending and arrogant.
His powerpoints are a bit difficult to navigate through because the information is not very organized. The powerpoints were not really helpful in fully understanding the material. However he is such a nice professor and always willing to help. Very clear grading criteria and tests/quizzes are pretty basic. He is the best option for 352!
Professor Safarzadeh is an amazing professor. He is very accessible and he explains the concepts very well! I have never done well in ECON until I had Professor Safarzadeh. Not a lot of homework. A group project. I highly recommend
Super nice and the best choice for macro. Content is pretty easy to understand and he is always helpful and willing to answer questions. He also is very flexible with grading and accommodating to students' needs. If anyone talks bad about him it's on sight
"I'm bad but not that bad"
Lots of homework. Homework is not related to the exams. His course materials have so many typos.
Here's the deal. If you're taking a quant class at USC you chose to be here. Prof. Safarzadeh is incredibly nice, and has a dearth of knowledge to impart if you take the time to speak to him. He welcomes and encourages additional research, and you can feel his passion for the subject. Pick his brain and put some work in -- you'll thank yourself!
He's a really nice guy I liked him. FBE506 isn't too hard, and he does a lot of hands-on Excel practice on what we learned. Show up, take good notes, and you'll do fine.
Professor Safarzadeh is very humble, and makes time to accommodate all questions. His lectures are easy to understand, and the tests are easy. Encourages effort, and is a really nice guy in general.
Very sweet, kind guy. Good professor who has a profound understanding and passion for economics and international finance. A bit slow at times, but always willing to answer questions. Interesting class that is highly applicable in real life/other classes.
Really nice guy and willing to help students who ask. However, his lecture slides are incoherent and often leave out crucial content he's talking about; which makes it 1) really hard to follow, and 2) even harder to study for midterms/quizzes. His lectures are also very slow and monotonous, which makes it very difficult to stay engaged.
Professor Safarzadeh is a nice guy, with interesting life stories to share too. His exams are challenging but fair and the answers for the questions are all found on his lecture slides. His lecture style is however, a little slow and not engaging.
This is my first rate because i had to come here and give Professor Safarzadeh my thanks. An absolutely amazing professor. Extremely accessible outside of class and will do anything to support you as a student and a person. Please take the time to chat with him outside of the classroom, you will not regret it. Easily a top professor in Marshall.
I would not recommend this professor if you do not understand economics. His lectures are really boring and hard to grasp the concepts. He does not give a lot of relevant test prep so it was impossible for me to understand how to study for the exams, and hard for me to do well. Whenever I would ask for help, it was not helpful at all. 0/10
Overall, had an amazing time with Professor Safarzadeh. Super nice and personable man. Class was incredibly lecture heavy, so be prepared for that, and we had so many examinations. 4 Exams (Including Final) and 4 Quizzes. Other than that, Safarzadeh explained all the concepts very well, and just overall a super nice person to speak too.
Prof. Safarzadeh is a good guy. His lectures are sort of boring, and just reads off some of the slides rather explain in his own words. Was good at answering questions. Someone could ask the same question 5 times and he probably wouldn't get angry. I recommend looking at the practice tests, sometimes they are very similar to actual test questions.
Professor Safarzadeh is the best professor I have ever had at USC. He is so accessible outside of class and truly cares about his student's success. One tip is that some concepts on the exam are discussed but not on the lecture slides so it is important to attend lectures and take good notes. If you put in effort and talk to him you will do great
His course is not structured. He teaches concepts whenever he feels like it even if they are a part of the previous chapter that he was teaching. His textbook is very unclear and is full of mistakes. You never know what kind of questions are going to come on the test because he is so unclear about everything and he is very unapproachable.
worst professor difficult and extremely unhelpful... take any other one but him
terrible extremely difficult exams and not helpful professor dont get him
Time for the most unclear teacher in Econ 352 to retire. It does not matter if he is nice if the tests are super unclear.
Perhaps one of the worst professors I've taken. He straight up lied to me about an opportunity to retake a quiz I missed then told me it was impossible to take it again. Tests are nothing like what he teaches. Lectures are insanely boring, no one pays attention. Even quizzes have nothing to do with lecture slides. Don't ever take him. Seriously.
The most boring lectures in existence. The answers he gives in class on in-class participation worksheets are completely different from the solutions he posts online.
Professor Safarzadeh is so sweet, but probably one of the worst professors I've ever had. There was no homework which made it really hard to keep up with already difficult information and incoherent lectures didn't help to study for the exams. The exams/quizzes are nothing like what we learn in class. Try to take another prof if you can.
He is a caring and nice guy! Although his class contents were hard to understand, he strived to answer questions inside and outside of the class. If you contact him frequently and ask questions, you can definitely catch up and get a solid knowledge of forecasting methods! However, he did not record his classes at all, so I must deduct one point,
As a person he is a nice and pretty funny. He wants you to succeed and is always available for help if you need it. However the class itself is poorly structured. You will have to use R but he doesnt teach you how to use it, yet on his assignments some questions cant be done without it. He's super unclear alot of the times as well.
Safarzadeh seems unfit to teach at this level. His formulas are inconsistent, leaving students unsure of their accuracy (& he doesn't create the study guides). He struggles to understand student questions and sometimes dismisses them as unintelligent. During exams, unclear wording leads to constant confusion with 6 students clarifying at all times.
Horrible professor. He doesn't appreciate if you ask questions and gaslights you. So unorganized n confusing avoid at all cost.
Hard to understand at first, but if you pay attention and take down everything he says and write you will survive. But all in all he is caring and wants you to succeed.
Extremely knowledgeable professor. His exams were not as difficult as everyone made it seem, they were exactly like the homework problems. He curves up if you tried your best, and is always available for office hours. His class may seem scary but it's not bad. He's definitely someone you should take to prepare you for work in the real world.
AVOID THIS CLASS. The professor is very lecture-heavy and homework is due at unreasonable times. He is inflexible and unwilling to accommodate anything but what he wants. He is a very boring lecturer and is slower than every other class. His accent makes him hard to understand. He is generally just mean to students, and doesn't explain things.
He always uploads the assignment that is due a day or two before the due date. Reads off slides during lecture, so you don't really have to attend. Rarely does practice problems with us so its up to you to figure out how to solve things on exams/quizzes. This class shouldn't be hard but he makes it hard.
STAY AWAY. The class is already hard, and his poor English + lack of clear explanations make it worse. Just reads slides, messes up on the board, and barely clarifies anything. Homework gets posted late Friday with Saturday deadlines. He tries, but it's not enough. Since it's mandatory, pray for a better prof.
Spent most of my time teaching myself the material because of his lectures were not helpful for quizzes or tests.
just skim over the slides and it should be a free class
LOVE Professor Safarzadeh. Most of these reviews are unfair and too harsh imo. Just attend class and make an effort to participate. He is very kind and always places his students first.
just go to class and do the assignments before quiz and test day
I would not recommend taking his class unless absolutely necessary. His lectures are impossible to understand if you're not already good at the subject he's teaching. He also does not fully inform you about what the syllabus for his exams is. The exams are way harder than he makes it sound. Don't do it if you have a different choice.
first time writing a review, had to be done for this one. lectures were extremely unhelpful for exams, no practice exams, was told quizzes were to help study for exams but neither answers nor questions were ever posted. only helpful thing was the test your knowledge and extra practice problems (not mandatory).
professor safarzadeh is extremely sweet, but i wouldn't recommend taking him unless you took an econ class in high school. attendance isn't mandatory, but you should still come bc he explains how to do hw assignments, which are literally the same as the test questions. also, he never responds to email/brightspace so you have to go to office hours.
He is the sweetest teacher and wants the best for his students. Lectures can be long and attendance isn't mandatory but attending class is helpful because he is very approachable and willing to help. Grade is mainly based off tests but the content is similar to quizzes and test your knowledges.
It seems like this guy genuinely goes out of his way to make life harder for his students. By a country mile, the WORST professor I have had the displeasure of experiencing.
If you took AP Micro Econ, this class should be pretty easy, no matter who you take it with. He is a boring teacher, but if you have a solid understanding of econ already, his class might not be the worst class. He posts all slides as well. He took attendance once out of all his lectures. Super nice guy tho.
