everything he teachs...is exactly what the book says...even the diagrams...but you wont be able understand him a lot of the times because of his accent....
well, even though his accent causes confusion, he tries as many students as possible to be engaged in the contents. Not really difficult,,, just convey what you r thinking to the lecture hall.
i really don't understand what the hell he was talking ahout because of his strong accent. For those who are not used to that, try to swich to other profs. i did it
YOU HAVE TO PAY 300% ATTENTION TO WHAT HE SAYS BECAUSE OF HIS AFRICAN (OR SOMEWHERE WORSE) ACCENT. JUST POINTLESS TO GO TO CLASS AS HE JUST READS OFF THE SLIDES WHICH IS FROM THE TEXT BOOK. BUT HE TAKES ATTENDENCE IN LECTURE. LOL
Do Not take this course. He gives a pop quiz which is tricky. The worst prop. in SFU
Reading off slides, boring lecture, picks on people, doesn't even understand what he's teaching. He won't even let you sleep through his boring lecture.
I was a bit confused by his accent, but i got used to it after a while. He's pretty helpful and goes through the material again, if you ask. He does like class "interaction" so he calls on people (but mostly the people in the back).
His quizes are harder than mid-terms; if you ask him a question, he will ask you to tell him the answer; I only understand half of his lectures most of the time; and it's just so much better to read the textbook
Very strong east-Indian accent (understandable). He wants everyone to do well. Be prepared for questions in lecture. Its not hard to do well in his class. STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE ACCENT AND MAN UP!
he cannot speak
The textbook is all you need, I have more difficulty understanding him than the actual stuff we learn. Don't go to his lectures, they are useless, he just reads off the slides that you get online. If you know the textbook, you'll do good on the test.
Don't let his thick accent deceive you. Hidden underneath that accent is a big heart. He gives very difficult quizes which are worth 1%-2%. You then go over it in tutorials and when the real midterms come, Its easier or literally the same type of question. He wants all his students to do good. Can't understand anything in his lectures though.
I dont know y everyone is complaining abt the accent. who cares. the guy has great notes and exams corresponding to them. you dont even need the text book. he's an easy prof. he might make ur life a bit difficult in class by picking on u, but i gues thats his way of say I LIKE YOU :P. but midterms are generaly easy. have fun!!!!!!!!
you're better off just reading the textbook. for the first few classes though, don't be late/"early for the next class."
Pretty funny guy. Somewhat easy, the quizzes and assignments keep you on track and are easy to get 100% on!
Breath of fresh air. This guy is an awesome prof. He is funny and wants all of his students to do well. Exams, Assignments and Lectures are all connected there are no surprises. Attend lectures b/c everything he stresses is on the exam . The course content is very interesting. Accent adds to the humour, wish there were more profs like him.
Many may disagree, but I think he's unfair and unprofessional.First off, people mite find him easy b/c everything is based on the textbook, but do you consider someone who just stands there and read off powerpointslides good at teaching?thats not teaching, thats reading, anybody can do that!@the end of the sem, he claims "too many people are gettin
This guy is a hard marker, his lectures are terrible. can't understand this guy. i suppose if i were from india it would be alright, but i don't speak punjabi. nice guy to talk to though and makes an attempt at helping you out but a hard marker, often missing things that you should have gotten marks for.
This guy has the worst accent among all the profs I ever had. His Exams are fairly easy however. Many of his Final Exam questions are right from the textbook. Word for Word. Just read the text and the course will be a breeze. You probably could get a good mark without going to the lectures, because to be frank, you will not like his lectures.
He is a pretty good prof. tests are so easy, the answers are straight from the textbook. Marking is a bit tricky, so just be careful. final exam is very long, nobody can finish it on time. BUT he will scale for sure. Overall, his courses are pretty easy
I never knew there were so many people in the class until the final, because no one ever showed up for the lectures. You dont need to go to class at all if you read his notes cuz they come right out of the text, which is amazing. Easy exams, easy homework, bad accent, but who cares? Take this prof over the others!
Horrible prof. Exam questions are not structure clear and he doesn't care. Make fun & yell at you in class. He kicked ppl out of class if they are 10 mins late at the start of the semester. Lecture are useless since he copies the text book on to the power points. Don't know his own material, SFU got another prof to teach half way into the semester.
One word to describe his teaching ability. Terrible. Absolutely terrible. I had hard time understanding what he was saying. His accent is pretty brutal.
harsh accent. heavy use of textbook.
This guy is a jerk. Really frustrating to talk to a guy with a very high ego (always thinks the students are wrong). Pointless lectures, horrible slides, disgusting attitude, no teaching ability and a ridiculously hard marker. Stay home and memorize the notes and everything will be fine. Take another prof if possible.
i cannot understand a word that is coming out of his mouth
This guy SUCK..don't know why he is still teaching! His english is full of accents and always picking on people by asking questions but no one could really understand what his question!
hes not the best prof ever! hard to understand, has a bad accent. there's no point in going to his lectures cause he just reads the lecture slides off the screen. He does pick on people during the lecture to answer questions. Better off reading the textbook than reading his notes. His lecture slides are just point form of the textbook. Bad prof
WORST PROF IN SFU HISTORY, STOP TAKING COURSES WITH HIM SO OTHER STUDENTS DON'T HAVE TO SUFFER LIKE WE DID.
I rarely understand his english most of the time. But if you understand it, it is actually helpful. He also like to pick on people, espeically the people who has sleepy face or who sitting in a corner. He actually wants us to learn. Some of his exam questions are from our practice exams or assignments. So remember to study those.
Terrible prof. Bullies students, doesn't communicate well, writes confusing exams.
if you hate econs but you need to pass it and you can memorise the textbook... take this class. came out knowing about as much as i started off with.
WORST PROF IN ECONOMICS HISTORY! STOP ENROLLING IN HIS CLASSES SO WE CAN GET A NEW, BETTER PROF!
Definitely under-rated. A good, solid professor. Econ 331 was a good class. Personally, I don't understand why so many people have indicted Akbar for his accent; I'm a run-of-the mill English speaker and I didn't find his accent difficult at all. In fact, he was pretty clear.
Thank god i took akbar on my last sem, 331 i failed 2 midterms and still ended up with B-...Do not expect him to teach u anything...read the text instead, bcoz his assignments, exam questions are pretty much from the text...KEEP IN MIND THAT IF YOU WANT TO JUST AIM FOR A PASSING GRADE, TAKE AKBAR, he doesn't fail anybody, nor as giving a D to u..
decent prof & pretty funny. going to lectures pretty useless... just read the textbook and online slides. exams are easy if you study.
i like him. his humor is somewhat crass-i think that's why ppl think he's actually mean, but i find him hilarious. content is a bore but what do u expect? class is easy, everything is from the textbook/lecture notes. how to ace his course? figure out his marking style and adapt to it!!
humorous and nice, easy exams(compare to the other prof). if he did not have the awful accent, he would be a good choice.
You will do well in this class if you pay attention to HIS notes. Probably one of my favourite profs so far. His accent isn't that hard to understand. You can miss lecture and do well if you just understand the concepts HE focuses on.
Question on exams are not in line with his answer key, therefore you must answer a part of the question that isn't even there, to get full marks
Little hard to understand but got points across. Also gave out free marks for answering questions in lecture
He has an interesting method. To do good, read just his stuff and find that stuff in the crappy textbook. His final was totally tangent while the rest of the course was pretty on par and easy. He's a good prof. I looked forward to his classes---his humor is classic..he literally had the lecture hall laughing each class!!!
Don't go to lecture. Pointless. I stopped going sometime in October... just go to tutorial and hope that you get a good TA.
GPA killer. don't take his course. he never reply your email if he does not like to
umm..i didnt understand a single word he said for the whole sem... =.= i think i went to.. 6 classes? but yea, i got thru the course reading and taking notes from the textbook =D ...his midterms are not bad, some questions are repeated from assignments... HOWEVER his FINAL EXAM was IMPOSSIBLE! ...i walked out of west gym cryinggg =(
You wouldn't understand his lectures because of his accent. He is so mean as well. Never get a course with him.
Sure he has an accent, but it made me listen more carefully. His exams are basically from his notes, which was awesome. You didn't need to go to lec to do well especially when he goes over important concepts...a lot, which kinda made it boring.
He is very rude with his students and never wants to help any student.
He is the worst Prof ever who doesn't know how to teach and is EXTREMELY RUDE to students... but tests are extremely easy too
As an engineering student, I found his course and tests very easy. I had a him teach my tutorial and was helpful. I went to a high school where the majority of the people spoke his language, thus it was second nature to understand what he was saying. If you didnt do well, it because you took it too lightly.
i agree he has a strong accent that sometimes i cannot understand him either. but i got used to his accent eventually. as long as he doesn't speak fast i can understand him. yes he is very rude to his students, but his exams are just too easy.the class is not even curved nor scaled.you make the decision between having easy exams or difficult profs
Seriously, only stupid people dont understand him. He is a decent prof
Great Professor. He puts fear into the class room because he cares. If your complaining that he picks on you, its because your sleeping or not paying attention. Furthermore, stop complaining about his accent
a great prof and a very easy course with him.. i find him funny and that always keeps my attention .. overall good guy and a good gpa booster
Easy exams, useless prof. OR vice versa? I'd rather do distance ed. Frankly, he has an accent and has horrible writing, but the class is what you make it. Don't blame/hate him for his bad teaching. Love him for his easy exams? If he made more assignments, the class would be even better. Take his class, but just be friggin' prepared.
I wouldn't give a comment of whether his exams are easy, but I can tell you that his exam questions are straight forward. (EX: What is the difference between demand and quantity demanded). But he requires explicit ans, so he is good for those who like to memorize the text
overall he was a good prof. ya people say he has a bad accent&cant be understood but that shud not make him a bad prof. he teaches u exactly wat u need to noe for his midterms & final.if u go to every class© his expls down&read over the notes he posts online u will do fine. the textbook is just for extra help his notes are made from the book.
His accent is a non-issue. The problem with this guy is that he goes all over the place...his lectures do not follow logical steps; in other words A MESS. He has a hard time getting concepts across, and his terrible handwriting doesn't help. 1 midterm = very easy, 2nd = hard, final = hard. Not recommended for first time economics students.
at first his accent is a little hard to understand but his exams is so fair cuz it's everything he talks about in class. there is no tricks in his exams, they are straight forward. gpa booster
Akbar is the worst prof i have ever had. His teaching is messy and you will find yourself frustrated and aggravated by his lack of caring for the education of his students. Thankfully, you should be fine as his tests are quite straight forward. If you plan to major in econ stay far away as you will probably learn nothing in this class.
EASY prof, once you get use to his accent and messy writing, hes actually a good professor. Midterms are SO EASY, the first midterm was EXACTLY the same as the first assignment. Final was a little bit trickier but probably better than Doug Allen for sure.
I don't know what people are talking about. If i listened to any of these comments i wouldn't have taken the class. But i would 100% recommend him. He helps you if you come to him after class. Also, depends on the t.a. you get. Funny prof. You have to understand his humor is dry/sarcastic.
i would say take his class but go to another econ 103 lec n exams shud b real easy. my TA actually outrightedly criticized him to our class. exams didn't do it for me since he expects you to give exact words from the text in order to get full marks. my TA was good in that he explained lots of concepts and i learned more from him than the prof.
His class is actually pretty easy comparing to all the other eco classes i have taken. Exams are straight forward, as long as you work hard for the assignments and pay attention to what he kept asking in class. He is being mean to students because those ppl were either chatting(extremely obvious)or doing stupid stuff in class. overall,he's not that
just love him so much! he is really nice, the most important is he gives straight forward exams! exactly the same as the assignments! totally underrated! he does scale marks :)
He is an easy teacher, read his notes and you'll be fine. attendance isn't mandatory but will help during midterms. BEAWARE of his final exam
worst prof EVER. mt were "short-answer" questions which he expects us to have "explanations". my TA said he docked marks NOT b/c of content but b/c of the amount written. TA kept teaching the wrong things in class. akbar has thick accent, but bearable if you pay attention. wastes a lot of time asking questions and get people to be involved in class
I have to say..this is a WAAAAAAAY underrated prof! Sure he picks out students during class and asks them questions... but he explains all his concepts 'very' clearly and is pretty funny too. You can't get another prof who gives exams EXACTLY on the assignments and the things that he talked about repeatedly in class.
hard to understanding his talking... he is just reading the notes during the lecture!!!
He's straight up easy just make sure you do the assignments and the practice midterm cause all his midterms are straight fromthem...
He is the funniest prof that I have ever had!!! Everything is explained really well and his exams are all based on the practice questions he gives you ahead of time. Just go to lecture and attend tutorials. No need to read the textbook. Take Econ 105 first, it is easier. If you are from Africa/India you can understand his accent, no problem.
One of the funniest profs i've had so far. his terrorist jokes are amazing. that and the person who always drops the glass bottle. His course isn't too bad, everything is straightforward, however, you need to decipher his notes and understand what he is saying. All in all he's alrite. assignments= midterm.
Very funny prof!!!!! Glad that i took this class with him.
this guy is hilarious. the jokes are funny. his notes are messy but it has all the info u need.his mid terms are easy too. read that allan's text. it helps alot. bad TAs tho.but i really recommend to take econ 103 with this guy
his midterms are realli easy! because it's relali close to the assignemtns he gives u b4 the exams, but u will nid to try write a lot because every question worth a lot of marks. so they r realli helpful. he is funny but has a heavy accent. Overall hes pretty gd.
If you are non-business, and take his class, what ever. But if you are business, then good luck understanding future BUS/BUEC courses. Simply put, you will FAIL later on. Want to actually learn Econ, take someone else, seriously. And Akbar's exam were NOT easy - some people just exaggerate. :@
Absolutely terrible teacher. Notes during lecture are often hard to read, in part because he refuses to dim the lights due to the possibility of people falling asleep. Exam material is closely related, but does require precision and complete explanation. Nice, funny guy but definitely not a good teacher.
Worst prof/class I've had. Doesn't seem to understand material, gives unclear/incorrect explanations, contradicts the textbook, lectures were a waste of time. Exam questions seemed straightforward, but marking scheme was very strange and subjective. Worst marks I have ever gotten in my life, but somehow ended up with A+ overall after the final.
really easy prof. he gives out practice midterms that are exactly like the midterm! and the final isnt even cummulative - so its just like another midterm. writing is a bit messy, but he also gives out slides so you dont have to really copy notes. super easy class and only 2 simple assignments the whole semester! definitely recommend
The greatest prof ever.
He is a God amongst economists. He is as amazing as Akbar the Great, the king of India who built the Taj Mahal. Yeah, he might have an accent, but its not that bad at all. He's pretty hilarious too.
Just study his notes (that he writes out in class)and make sure you understand it! His exams are easy (both the midterms and the final). So definitely take this class with him if you care about your gpa.
This Prof was amazing! the class was simple and he got to the point. Questions on midterms and final are exactly like the questions given. Incredibly fair prof..we had a blast. Everyone should try to make it into his class. Lectures were so much fun!
He has an accent but you can get used to it in a month. His writing is messy, however, copying notes is not import tnat in this class. Using many graphs to answer questions. Then, you will do fine.
It all goes back my first day in SFU as a freshman business student. I was so excited to be a student of the most prestigous faculty of business, yet things started getting messy when I met this professor. I took Micro Econ with this prof but this guy can't even speak in English. Mumbling and making some weird noice in the middle of lecture.
He is a great Professor!
I took him in my 2nd semester at SFU. He was hard, I had no idea what he was talking about. He would just read off the screen. Mind as well go home and read the lecture notes yourself. If you tried to rely on the textbook, that didn't help either. Overall, everyone did bad.
Had him in Fall 08. Lectures weren't bad, he makes a few good jokes. He doesn't do a great job of explaining concepts, so attendance to tutorials is absolutely NECESSARY. Exams weren't too difficult, but understanding of all graphs is 100% mandatory. Take CARLA for TA; BEST TA EVER, GIVES STRAIGHTFORWARD EXPLANATIONS OF ALL COURSE MATERIAL.
Funny ass teacher, going to his class is like a fob russell peters comedy show. This teacher is a G for sure, got over 90% on both midterms and just wrote my final. the 1 class that i enjoyed in sfu this semester.
This guy is awesome. he is SOOOOO funny, like omg. his exams are very easy and fair. there are no surprises, so as long as you know what is going on in the class, then you will do fine in his class. i dont know why this guy has such a bad rating, he is a REALLY good teacher. he explains concepts very clearly. All in all, a very dedicated professor
good funny teacher.....great course great teacher....recommend!!
His accent really isn't that hard to understand! He tells you exactly what will be on the exams! Not difficult at all.
Awful Professor. He just scribbles all over the over-head and does not properly label things :S His course outline is a joke as well. I would never take another course with him again!
terrible teacher. Doesn't know how to teach. Needs to learn how to speak english properly and this guy is heartless. i worked hard throughout the whole term but got nothing in return. Talked to him about how to improve. Gave me a shtty attitude and doesn't care about how his students are doing in class. Doesn't give any help AT ALL. don't take him!
Akbar can be rude and mean sometimes. But he is a great prof. Very clear on what he is teaching. just go to the lecture every time, pay more attention on what he is saying, its a easy A. He gives very easy exams and always wants his students to do well in his class. He is helpful and nice during office hrs, too!
Not helpful. will belittle you for asking questions or making an effort to answer questions in class
The best Prof in Econ department!! I took both Econ 103 and 210 with him, he is a very nice person! I love his lecture!! ^^
People will say he's easy, when really, I found his course to be quite difficult. He marks unfairly; he'll make you answer questions you think you know, then after marking tell you it's a 0/8 because of something he failed to mention earlier. Exam materials were irrelevant to teachings - I KID YOU NOT. He shoots you down when you try to approach hi
Fair prof. Goes over some topics many times, but usually those are the ones on exams. Nice to have 2 MTs + non-****final! Hard final tho since no assignment given before it. No mult-choice, explanation answers need to be precise. Doesn't give TAs ans key, so marking style can be pretty random. Avg was low this term, so Easy A+ for me!
Highly knowledgeable; potential to be an excellent lecturer. However, he is extremely rude, abrasive, and intransigent. A number of my classmates shared the same concerns; his demeanor and unpredictablilty with respect to mood and attitude do not create a healthy or encouraging environment in which to learn.
EXTREMELY RUDE! shoot you down whenever you approch to him. mark very unfair and does not care about how serious this course is to econ students. does not know what he is looking for on the exams
i think he dreaded the 3 hour lectures as much as we did. spoke in a monotone and read right off the slides so i stopped showing up after lecture 3. tests are fairly easy and fair though cuz i think the TA's did the marking. this class has potential to be so interesting and i think he killed it
This was the one econ class that I was most looking forward to taking and I was utterly disappointed. When he was actually interested, the prof seemed more interested in getting laughs than helping students learn. Further, a quarter of the lectures were taken up by student presentations which is not what I expect my tuition money to go towards.
I came into this class with preformed prejudices towards Akbar, but rudeness and intimidation, hes a great lecturer! his notes are great for studying, the assignment qs are essential to passing! he is sometimes hard to understand bc of his accent, but you get by. hilarious when he cracks a joke! talk in class is good. mt and final was fair-hard.
I dont think he's as difficult as others mention! 2 mt 2 assnms and final. no MC questions. MTs are fair but final was hard.he's accent but you get used to it by time. you've to study both class notes and text.he's good sense of humor. even though i expected higher grade at the end, i'm satisfied his teaching and i'd take more classes with him.
I took akbar for 305, 355W and 387 and got A+s in all of them. Those who say he is mean and hard don't know him. The guy has lots of office hours and is friendly if you apear to put in the effort... and if you never noticed- EVERY MT AND FINAL QUESTION IS FROM THE TEXTBOOK!
good prof!
nice porf, easy course, go take it!
the textbook is fxxking useless.it's full of bs. the course is pretty easy. but if u sleep in class or being late, he ll make u pay off
sooo funny! well I thought so anyways. People who think he is mean, clearly don't have a sence of humour, or they just don't put any effort into learning the material.
Funny guy looks clinically depressed but it makes his jokes funnier. A LOT of ppl complain about his accent but he's not hard to understand. My class mostly azn - likely they cdn't understand his Indian accent bc they're FOBs -I'm azn too;]. Practice shts for MTs almost exact same Qs. 2MTs:25% F:40% T:10% Study slides + his lecture notes.
He gives u final marks based on the class average, so even 80 percent can give u only just C grade in the course.Watch out guys , but midterms r ****ing easy and final was not that tough
Very funny and engaging prof. He really wants the class to succeed but he does teach at an advanced level. Enjoyed the classes, suffered studying for the finals. Definitely read the textbook and make your own notes. Isn't too helpful after class but the class itself was interesting and entertaining
The worst I have seen in the department. No knowledge, and quite evil attitude. Jokes sound quite insulting. May give low average to class, for example, C.
His exam questions are very unclear. Sometimes, it seems, he does not know himself what he intended to ask, then clarifies in the midst of the exam and does not add sufficient extra time to do the question again. Still, he's relatively better than many other Profs I have experienced in the ECON department.
Even though his class is quite boring, and his writing is messy, but he is willing to help students by explaining over and over again until we truly understand. Notes are useful, attend lecture and tutorials to understand concepts!
His course is pretty easy and he is a nice prof!!
He's funny and can instantly give funny examples which gives this boring course a life
All exam questions were straight from the textbook.. that tells you one thing: either you need to get the solution manual to survive the course or you will need a good TA. Boring class + tons of unrealistic models introduced = I finally understand why people hate economics
he is ok and his accent is not that bad as everyone says ..lol and for both the midterms make sure u know the sample midterms and it's just the same. Attend every lecture bcoz he clarifies the stuff he will put on exams. Final is ok but make sure u understand everything , then u will be ok.All tas' were terrible and had to fight for marks:(
OMG I don't understand why the rating for easiness is so high for Akbar.First he skips the chapter that is going to be on the the midterm.Second, reviews are useless.Third, lecture slides are useless. Fourth, his writings are horrible to copy it down! Fifth, the TA is useless. Conclusion:HORRIBLE CLASS.Although I got good mark for studying my ass off
OMG I don't understand why the rating for easiness is so high for Akbar.First he skips the chapter that is going to be on the the midterm.Second, reviews are useless.Third, lecture slides are useless. I've taken Akbar for Econ 210 which led me to take Econ 305 a few semesters later. The guys hilarious but he is quite clear in his explanations. The first MT is usually the easiest and they do get incrementally harder. In particular, his finals are usually pretty brutal so be careful! He might be the best prof to take for 305 as well.
Terrible prof
I really liked him, even though he seems a little harsh or in your face, he's just being funny, he taught the concepts so well i aced both midterms, never once read the book, he goes over every question before starting so gives u lots of time to think of answers. Definitely recommended. dont be intimidated by his accent, half of SFU profs have em!
i'd recommend him just cuz his class is so dead easy you can sleep your way through a semester and pull off at least a B. it's a 5 credit course but i spent less time on it than 105.
First off, Akbar's accent is not hard to understand. Second, he is the sure way to go, especially for tough courses like 305. Akbar is probably the most knowledgeable prof in econ and he hammers the concepts into your brain to the point that they become impossible to forget. His midterms are not hard but final is harder. Assignments are a breeze!
Easy course
nice teacher
esay one, funny guy
Worst professor I've ever had. He has no outline or agenda for the class, and lectures without slides or any sort of order or purpose. He asks students "yes or no", and all sorts of other questions, and then rips them apart if their answer isn't 100% correct. He is unwilling to help when you don't understand something, and often humiliates you.
Dr. Akbar always dragged class after the time, sometimes half an hour into your next class or for me, lunch break. That being said, he's my ALL TIME FAVORITE! Just bring food. It was a well earned A. I never missed class.
