Actual. Angel. I hate math but she was sweet, entertaining, good at explaining, and understood that sometimes we need help just to get through the day. You have to use an online textbook but nothing is easier than the textbook assignments.
Molly Metz is the best!
Caring, organized and clear
Definitely one of the best professors at UofT.
clear in her explanations but holy her exam is hard..
You thought you understand everything in her lectures and ready for the midterm but when you actually write her test, you will realize you are wrong. EXAM IS EXTREMELY HARD
Don't bother taking this course. It is mediocrity at its best. She tries to cover all the bases by assigning students too much and has endless amounts of PowerPoint slides that are pointless because she barely even talks about them in her lectures. She is new, so maybe she will get better with more experience.
Avoid taking any course with this prof or you will lower your GPA. The courses she teaches are not difficult but the way she grades assignments is very strict, especially anything with a written component. The lectures are not terrible but also aren't very interesting. If you have an option to take the same course with someone else then choose them
She took a really interesting topic and made it a lot more difficult than it needed to be. Textbook readings, weekly article readings with 500 word article response papers, proposals, essay rough draft, essay peer edits, final essay, application brief, and two midterm exams. Overkill on everything. Plus, the marking was very tough.
Actually cares about students. People who complained about the midterms were those who did not bother understanding the big picture of what we were learning (for PSY331; admittedly, the first midterm didn't go well for me at all but the second was much better), or didn't bother reading the textbook (PSY202). Lots of chances to boost your mark.
Take her courses if you are genuinely interested in learning and pushing yourself to really understand the topic. She is tough but fair. Her assignments require you to actually apply what you have learned and think deeply rather then repeat. Very sweet and really cares about students!
Intentionally makes her exams so that the averages will be low. People like her because she has this faux-nice facade but anyone with any sense can see right through it. If she was actually nice she wouldn't refuse to take questions right before exams and instruct her TAs to do the same. She's actually quite rude.
Dr. Metz is a super awesome Prof. Extremely approachable and is amazing at explaining statistical concepts and makes it super fun!
Purposefully omits questions on midterm and final to lower the average instead of curving down. Also marks assignments extremely strictly instead of laying down straight forward instructions to set students up for success. One of those profs that loves adjusting marks instead of designing proper questions and assesments.
She seems nice and lectures were easy to follow, textbook really helped too. But the midterm mark scheme is very unclear and ambiguous. Assignment and exam grades were released at the same time when final grades were out so students weren't able to challenge the assignment grading. Note: assignment was due late march, final grades released mid may.
She gives great lectures and makes difficult concepts clear. However, this course gave heavy workload and makes you suffer. I took her class in the summer term, and she placed 3 heavy chapters in one week, making 3 problems sets due in five days along with an essay. I had to sacrifice my sleep time merely trying to follow.
Molly Metz is able to plan her courses in the student's shoes and executes them in the student's best interest. The way she organizes her content, explains & cautions us on harder content, engages the class, makes a confusing course become much less confusing. To succeed, simply listen: her lectures are very engaging anyways!
Absolutely worst prof at U of T. She has no idea what she is doing. Completely incompetent in writing tests. During the exam tells you that half of her question do not make sense. Or she will let you write the answers and then not mark half of the test because the questions were unsolvable. She does not answer anyones questions and tried to mislea
Extremely dogmatic and biased professor. I enrolled in this course interested in psychology of emotion, but found out it was very political and opinionated. Material she would present would be more ideological than scientific in nature, and she would treat her *opinions* as objective truth--most of which focusing on social justice. Dropped.
I dropped this class halfway through even though I worked really hard and was doing well. What she expects out of students is unrealistic. Her teaching style reminded me of middle school.
*Instead of writing 2-3 papers throughout the semester, you get assignments usually small in size but large in number and "flavors". Beware: you MAY or MAY NOT like that. *Tests are fair and clear. I'd say textbook and lectures are 50/50. *Actually a good person. *That said, her class discussions are often ideological echo chambers, sadly.
I had a great semester with Dr. Metz. She makes statistics approachable and is very accessible if you have any questions. As a student who is bad at math and scared of it, she makes it less daunting and the first test is almost all theory based. Can do well by just attending lecture and doing problem sets.
Her term tests have nothing to do with what she talks about in the lectures. Mostly definition based, and it is really hard to prepare for her tests
SHE IS THE BEST! I had her for psy201 and i was afraid of all the math that i would need to do but she explained everything so well and i ended up with an A in the course. LOVE HER! p.s took her again this year and plan to take her again next year :)
I took PSY323 with her and got 70s on the first assignments and term tests. I did better when I got help from the TA but found her classes to have a lot of work for very little marks (e.g. reading responses). She tests from lectures so study them better. Amazing lectures though!
she is unfair, the 2 hour midterm was actually 2 hours, of full on writing. She doesnt care about students. She is so unorganized in her lectures and I am a fourth year taking this 2nd year course. IT IS HORRIBLE, UGHHHHH!
Dr. Metz was extremely disorganized and did not communicate well with her TAs or students. 90% of the time, when we asked the TAs questions regarding assignments or tests, their answer was "I don't know, Molly hasn't told us". She doesn't explain assignments clearly and marks unfairly. It is quite obvious she doesn't want her students to succeed.
Dr. Metz is the most kind and understanding person. Lectures are very clear and she is clear of expectations. Tests require you to apply your knowledge. I failed the midterm due to no fault of Dr. Metz and she was amazing in helping me through my difficulties. 10/10 would recommend, don't know what these negative posts are talking about.
Amazing lecturer! Though this class is content dense, I feel Dr Metz tries to be engaging and she really does a great job educating. She could benefit from better organization, but it doesn't seem to impact her teaching much. Tests are long but questions are fair. I'm shaping my course schedule to fit more of her classes! She is wonderful!
Her tests are brutal. Its often unclear what she wants and her definition questions are the words. Lectures are also mediocre at best.
I signed up for the course expecting to do actual statistics and maths and ended up writing paragraphs of words in the exams. It's a waste of time and effort personally and I wish she would just let us do maths.
She's extremely nice, however the tests are kinda brutal and there a lot of writing involved, and less so computations. but if you go to class, she explains concepts really well in my opinion. i would take her class again, but maybe not this class ahah
Prof. Molly Metz is someone who definitely cares a lot about her students (even to the extent of reminding students to take good care of themselves). She was also very clear in her explanations of specific concepts for PSY201, and also left room for students to ask questions before, during, and after her lectures. She is a true homegirl. :)
Super nice prof, and decent lecturer in combination with the MindTap assignments. She curves with the test short answer though, so you can give a right answer and lose most marks on the question if it's not absolutely perfect.
Sometimes she can act sassy and have attitude, but she's actually nice and not too bad of a prof. She references the real world a lot which makes me enjoy the class. Her lecture slides are amazing. However, you think you understand everything in class, but as soon as you get to the midterm, you will realize how hard it is. (especially MC)
Her multiple choice will trick you every time, many people in the class would have 90s on the short answer and be in the 50s or 60s on mc. She seems very nice in lecture but when approached or attempted to reach outside of class she is stubborn on her ways.
misleading prof
Would not take again.
As background I was a psych specialist going into her class with a 3.95 cGPA. I approached the course no different than my other courses and managed to get 65% on the midterm - didn't look into it, just dropped out. The only thing I'm thankful for is that this class inspired me to settle for a psych major & further explore immunology and biology.
don't take her class
The worst prof at UofT. Her lectures seem extremely easy, but her tests are the worst. The lectures dont prepare you AT ALL for the tests. I shouldve dropped the course. Dont do this to yourself and dont take her methods course.
I'm an A student in most of my other classes, but I did terribly in this class. I genuinely thought I understood the content, did the practice problems, and watched YouTube videos for hours and still ended up with a terrible grade. Don't take her class if you need an average grade to get into grad programs because the midterms and exam were BRUTAL
Her tests can be pretty difficult but they're doable. I'm not great at math but somehow I actually did really well in her course. You can tell she really cares about her students based on her emails and responsiveness to questions. It refreshing to see a prof as nice and genuine as her for once
I understand that it's her first online class and she is a very nice person, but she is extermely disorganized. She gives super hard tests and doesn't prepare you for them. Like here were questions about stuff we didn't even cover on the midterm. I'm all for independent learning but I would appreciate more guidance.
I usually nail psy courses, but this course is hard af... although she gives us a long time and open book for the midterms, but I felt as if open or close book makes no difference... some questions on it were topics which werent covered at all or questions were full of traps... one word makes a huge difference. But she is nice and caring but harsh
I initially struggled but it turned out okay. Metz shows to genuinely care about students. She provides a lot of resources before and after exams so that all questions can be answered and everyone can improve from the last exam. Tests were much more conceptual than expected (few calculations), so focus on understanding topics and analysis.
I think Dr. Metz was a wonderful Professor - kind, friendly, and always cared so much about her students. If you genuinely put in the effort and engage with her lecture content (which is always thorough and clear) + you're a creative thinker, you'll do well!
Professor Metz was a very supportive teacher! Always willing to help students and answer questions! The multiple choice section on her tests might make overthinkers (like me) pull out their hair, but the relatively easy short answer questions usually make up for it. If you spend time doing the work, you can definitely succeed in this class.
Dr. Metz is freaking lovely. Courses are hard and content heavy but she organizes them really well. I bombed PSY201 but would have failed if it weren't for her and you can tell she really cares about the content and the students. She let people complete more/less of the projects this semester and graded accordingly which more profs should have done
i really like her!!! honestly i hated this course so much but she really tried her best to make easier on us, and she was also pretty lenient with the marking. also quite funny too
Terrible lecturer and makes material seem too easy... but then tests are super hard (worth 75% of your grade). SA questions are v open ended, yet the rubric for the answer requires you mention specific things. The prof clearly doesn't care abt her students as she sends out "copy-and-paste" emails and doesn't respond when students email her back
Always preaches wanting all of her students to get A's/ wanting us to succeed, but marks way too hard with no feedback. She's a very subjective prof. Literally could sum up lectures in 30 min but will rant on random things for 1 hour just to make the class longer. Avoid class if you can.
Unfortunately PSY202 is a required course for me this year. I hope the professor will not pay less attention to the lecture and just use some Google videos to dismiss the students because it is an online course.
Her homework and her lectures are not at all compared to her tests. There's a big data analysis project where she will not help you how to do things on the software and you will have to use Google for it. If you have questions about how to do analysis on software, you better ask throughout the class or you will be left on your own at the end.
Beware of her tests. They are so difficult and do not reflect her teaching at all. She teaches the bare basics of the concepts, making it seem very easy, but then hits you with VERY hard tests. As a referencem the maximum grade for the first two tests was a 90. Her teaching is fine, but the issue mainly lies how she assesses the class.
seems like a nice person but her exams are ridiculously hard. get the practice problems correct almost 90% of the time yet did really bad on the exams. the TA's mark way too harshly. course content isn't too bad but her exams make it impossible especially with lack of flexibility they give. would stay away from this class, super low class average
A lot of people are talking about how Dr.Metz was hard and yes this is true, BUT she is an incredibly good prof. She repeats things multiple times which is why I have such a good understanding of stats even after finishing the course. The course requires hard work, however, if you make good notes and ask for your help you will be fine!
Shoutout to the TA Stephanie. The data analysis project was tedious but not difficult. If you ask a lot of questions you will be just fine! Don't be scared of the Prof, she is so nice and has a good understanding of the material. I improved from midterm 1 to 2 and she sent me a personal email so she is very kind, but does require hard work.
The low ratings of her is completely undeserved. Students that don't spend the time to understand and apply the material will obviously do badly on tests and exams. Your failure is a reflection of you, not a reflection of the professor. It is YOUR responsibility to use the resources available to you.
tests arent bad, funny prof
Kind and understanding towards students but rambles far too much in lecture. A lot of the material for this class could have been explained in 2 hours or less. Seems to have a strong obsession with control that makes it incredibly difficult to like them. Fairly disorganized. Would benefit from reading student reviews more often.
I liked this professor and class. She was very enthusiastic. The lectures were quite drawn out. I would play them at 2x speed and still get bored at times. My only other complaint is that I do not believe my class was prepared enough for the essay question on the midterm... the avg for it was around a 50 I think.
It's crazy that the class average was 50 for the midterm. It's ridiculous that I have more challenging classes than PSY203, but this is my lowest class. The professor is just hard to listen to for 3-hour lectures. Honestly, take something else. Don't take PSY203 with Metz; nothing against her, but you will probably do better in another class.
Extremely disorganized (Quercus webpage especially hard to navigate and access). Drawn out lectures that are incredibly tedious and long. Unfairly constructed assessments that maximize student suffering. Limited opportunities for regrading requests/grade disputes and feedback on assessments. Enthusiastic about the material but a mediocre educator.
omg she deserves better ratings! I hated math and stat and it was online asynchronous so I was worried at first, but ended up getting an A! She explained things clearly during lecture, gave many examples, and made the content interesting! You can always go to her weekly zoom session to ask questions. Would 100% take her again for future courses.
Prof Metz is so disorganized, her Quercus page is extremely hard to navigate making it hard to know what is due and when. She talked incredibly fast in her lectures which makes it hard to understand what she's saying, her slide decks are also 100+ slides when they really don't need to be.
You can say whatever you want but one thing's for sure, this woman is UNORGANIZED and CONTROLLING. Avoid her if you can. Unreachable/inaccessible outside of class, limited opportunities for regrading, limited feedback, and consistently rambling. Don't let people fool you, she looks and sounds nice but simply just isn't.
SUPER DISORGANIZED. The tutorial covers many things unrelated to the tutorial HW, and yet those things don't include what's needed for the hw. Yes she can put the 5% hw score on the project so you don't have to do the hw, but the project also lacks direction. She just expect you to perfectly wing it. FYI the discussion board was never answered.
Very harsh on essays.
difficult tests. lot of homework. not organized. hard tutorial
bad prof, disorganized, too much work, tut unrelated
Dr. Metz is one of the most knowledgeable people/professors in the Psychology department. Lectures were so amazing and interesting. Be prepared to do a lot of readings. I CR/NCRed the course because I didn't do great on the midterm. Exams are a little bit difficult, but as long as you watch the lectures and do the readings you'll be good. Enjoy it.
Unorganized, inaccessible, hypocritical, and rude. Controls every aspect of your learning so that you have absolutely no incentive to learn. Never replies to emails. Did not post textbook materials until the 3rd week of class. Locks assignments before they are assigned so you can't do them beforehand. Just awful.
Disorganized course. Tutorials were incredibly confusing. TAs didn't know what was going on. Lectures were hard to sit through. Had zero idea how well you needed to do on the final because half of your grade was still up in the air by the time the exam rolled around. If you can avoid Metz... do it. (she also has a huge victim complex??)
Professor Metz is great! She explains statistics very clearly and makes connections to the real world to help us understand why what we are learning is important. The assignments were clear and the tests were challenging, but fair.
She's been disorganized from day 1 of the term. Many profs give textbook access and the viewing of the syllabus earlier than the start date. She does it much later (like a week or a week and a half in?). You're better off reading the textbook on your own. Of course, watch the videos, to note important topics. I just cannot stand disorganization.
don't take her asynch courses
Better than Marco Sama, worse than anyone else
The most boring lecturer I have ever had. A lot of talking about nothing, and the 3 hours lectures with content which other profs cover in 1-2h. Nice person, but her teaching style completely did not work. Tests were not too hard, but grading criteria never seemed to be fully clear. Avoid her courses, despite her being a nice person.
Honestly well-rounded teacher. I felt like she gave us enough practice for exams, and we got lots of practice from MindTap. The multiple choice bits on the exams were super hard, but if you know how to do the math part of stats, you'll be fine. She's very nice and answered FAQ on weekly zoom meetings, plus discussion posts were answered quickly.
super awful, just avoid
She actively tries to ruin your grades, her tests are extremely difficult. Her short answers are unbelievably unfair, she will provide you an a few example questions with no answer sheet or with a very limited rubric but expects you to be able to write like the best researcher alive. Do not let her kind demenor trick you, she will screw your grades
I thought that true evil does not exist, but Metz proved otherwise
I would cry after every test I had with her. We are not PHD students in statistics! The tests are extremely hard! And no help is provided
THE MOST HORRIBLE PROF IN THIS UNIVERSITY. HOW THE HELL the avarage of the class midterm is 55. PSY DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING WITH HER
everyone is collectively shocked after today's midterm grades were returned back 🤣 avoid this monster by all means. she is doing absolutely nothing in this class, no responses, exams are the hardest I've ever had in this uni.
I will have to either do CR/NCR or she will become my 13th reason why for sure.
I am incredibly sorry for her cute dog to have such a disgusting owner. Funny how molly Metz tought us more about Gordie than statistics. Avoid her, please for your own sanity, avoid her
I thought Sarah Mayes-Tant was the worst professor ever, but this university can surprise
queen of russian roulette exams 🤩🤩
Agree with what was said earlier today + multiply by 1000 She is that bad
people fail for a reason, and she is the reason why I fail my midterm
she is such a disgusting human being, like one of the worst I've ever seen. she is evil and the reason why I'm starting getting tachycardia and shortness of breath.
imagine not a single soul gets 85 the class so you have to increase the score to get the top performance people at least 90, while still saying that the avarage was perfect
I found her lectures were actually pretty good, and I learned the content well from them. They were pretty concise and explained concepts well. The tests are definitely marked a bit harshly though. I did ok, but definitely expected to do better, and the class average was quite shocking
Initially comes across as nice. Leaves queries unanswered & forgot to post topics yet pretended she planned to post later. Mismatch between content students practice with & tests. Doesn't provide practice in her style, because she reuses material (tests & videos). Could be a good prof but online format allows her to do less work, so she does less.
Metz might be a crazy manipulator, I walk into each midterm with a good level of confidence, then she completely destroys it by asking about things I have never seen before. Her random test questions combined with her lazy teaching might have actually just ruined stats for me, and I actually found stats fun. Holy she is so lazy.
She reuses lectures and does nothing in terms of practice for your midterms and tests. Cashes her check from the school and does nothing. LAZY. Metz, if you are reading this, I want you to know that you need to do better, if the school fired professors who performed poorly, you might be the first out the door. Also, care more for your students.
Molly Metz is the worst professor of university of Toronto and that's just a fact — person is doing absolutely N O T H I N G and wants you to know everything to such a high measures — that even TAs have no idea why the question was wrong or right
A warning memorial: PSY201 runs on ancient recordings, absent guidance, misleading practice questions, no answers, and exams far harder than anything shown. Grading is murky, averages collapse. A required course run like an abandoned office. Spare yourself—avoid this class if possible.
This class was absolutely horrible. First off the prof gate keeps past papers and so there is no form of adequate practice for midterms or finals. Secondly, to make things even WORST she does not give practice questions/ rather RARELY give them and when she does they are a waste of time as the test format and questions are nothing like the practice
this class will be in my nightmares until my last day
Molly Metz converted statistics into philosophical something — where you have to be a magician to know what's going on in her head to get at least an average grade, above 50. There is zero practice, not a single problem will help you to succeed in this class. It's philosophical, not statistical
I think this class stressed me out so much I lost 10 lbs I'm not even kidding
Why are there so many negative reviews? Just read the textbook and you'll be fine. You actually get three hours for the tests and the final exam—that's really generous and allows students to double check their answers. The short-answer questions are difficult, but I wouldn't say they're unreasonably hard. Moreover, you actually get 10% for free :)
The course she ran was possibly the worst piece of education I have ever received in my entire life. UofT being a world-class institution is a lie. If people like her were the only people on this earth allowed to teach, we would all go back to the dark ages.
Honestly, this prof is outrageous. She explains content like it's so easy, and then provides test questions that don't even seem they come from this course. Not to mention that she provides zero practice questions for a final exam and no past papers. She couldn't care less about her students, and she is not easy to get in contact with if needed.
One of my easiest classes I have ever taken as a psychology major. Dr Metz you better ignore them !
Congrats to all the people rating this professor anything above a 1.0. You randomly got your grade artificially boosted so this piece of work doesn't get fired. The rest of us, sinking here on a dying ship, are suffering for your success. Congrats though. Wish I were one of you.
These positive comments are ridiculous— please, do not trust them. Just because of people like that I through that Metz statistics is not as bad and enrolled — this class is a pure nightmare
Honestly Metz is a good prof if you *actually* watch the lectures and use her resources. Wild that this is U of T, the 'best' school in Canada and y'all are so averse to doing any work that you can't just ask ChatGPT to do for you.
The course emphasizes logic over computation, and the math is around Grade 10–11 level. If you watch her lectures, you should be fine.
Dr. Metz explains the concepts really well, and the tests actually line up with the material. She even gave everyone extra free marks on the midterm! I'm not sure why people are complaining so much...come on... be appreciative. She is actually nice and caring.
I want to put in now my opinion about Molly after the class is officially done today. She is de facto one of the best professors to explain the content. She is passionate and her videos are amazing. The exams are hell. Yes, future students need to be aware. But with Metz you will learn statistics extremely well (although the class is very hard lol)
Molly is super clear in lectures and her videos make the material seem easy, but the tests were way harder than what she taught. I studied a lot and still struggled. She's really nice, but I don't think she prepared us well for the exams. I wish she offered more realistic practice.
Tangential, slow lectures, confusing the point being made. Things that could be simply explained take forever and topics that need more time to explain in depth are skipped over. The confusion continues with what she expects from her assignments. Lazy admin work not even updating the syllabus or assignment documents from previous years.
