Took his class got a D!! Then took Patterson and got an A!!!! Explain that?
Very hard to understand him when he talks and his handwriting is very bad....hard to read
Quite a competent teacher, yet his classes are not as easy as many make them out to be, and he doesnt seem to respect his students much.

Teaches well in class. Exams have NOTHING to do with notes.
YOU SHALL NOT PASS! that should be darboes motto, like the scene from Lord of The Rings. Darboe's class is impossible. I found his lectures to be interesting after filtering out the psycho **** babble. He's a bitter man.... Take Hulse instead.
This class is very difficult, but hes not as bad as everyone says. He gives all exam questions & answers, but its difficult to remember all the information and STATE EXPLAIN and give an EXAMPLE. I have learned a lot in this class and would be happy w/ a D
I don't agree with everything he teaches, but I respect him. He is wonderful at what he does.
very difficult....seems to be respected only by the black students........crazy man
great teacher and fun. if you study like he says you shouldnt have a problem passing the course. It was an interesting year for me and I never got sleepy.. thats a plus!
best prof at shepherd. he cares about the material and cares about his students. he is demanding, and rightfully fails students who fail to grasp the material. take darboe if you are serious about learning about real issues that plague U.S. society.
consistently wastes half the class telling us all how lazy we are. Darboe is malicious, unhelpful, unreasonable, and miserable. I would rather be beaten by a cop who hadn't had his morning doughnut fix than take his class again.
Best proffessor. He cares about the subjects and expects students to take them seriously. Those who work hard and want to LEARN will do well. Those wanting only to pass will fail. Taste the difficulty of grad school. He is only disliked by the resentful.
Darboe is interesting to listen to during his lectures, but half of his lectures do involve how stupid everyone but him is. The book will not help you at all because his test come from the notes only and his notes are pretty confussing. YOU WILL FAIL
You will learn in his class. He grades very difficult on exams. Study very very hard and make sure everything is exactly as he says!
He could be considered a pretty good professor if he wasn't so stuck on himself... He's too worried about setting a standard because "all other professors inflate their grades." You'll learn but ur grade will be horrible!!!!!!!!
Simply one of the best professors I have ever had. Difficult but worth every bit of work put into his class. Extremely helpful if you suck it up and go to him and ask questions. Demands that students apply themselves-otherwise they will not make it.
This man is not only difficult, but almost every student fails his classes. If you do plan on taking him, be prepared to go through pure hell on earth. He'll make you want to die!
Great teacher. Very accessible. Very demanding. Memorization is key. This isn't high school so be prepared to think and to work.
I had him for my first class ever at Shepherd. Mistake! He is not a good teacher unless you are one of the girls. On the first test out of 35 students two passed. One with a D one with a C. Doesn't say much about his teaching.
Although I learned alot in his class, it was EXTREMELY DIFFICULT. He is passionate about what he teaches, but will fail everyone for minor mistakes. Also class participation is a must, he calls on everyone to participate.
easiest class i've ever taken, i got As on all quizzes and tests so far, even a 100! so people complaining are just the people who shouldn't be in college
If you can parrot what he says to the exact word, you can pass his class. If you like to put the ideas into your own words, do it VERY CAREFULLY. If you change the meaning of your answer just a little by doing so, he will count it incorrect.
Didn't want to hear opinions. Tried telling us on first day of class that humans no longer have instincts and when we asked how that was possible, just kept repeating it. Unwilling to listen or help. One of those "intellectuals" who believes he's smarter than everyone. Rails against American culture
Dr.Darboe is very hard, but a wonderful teacher. He's very intelligent and is willing to help if you ask. He'll keep helping until you've learned it. Dr.Darboe makes you earn the grade he doesn't give it to you. You have to be willing to sit and study his lectures every day if not you will fail.
HERE IS THE DEAL. If you are looking for an easy A, DO NOT take this teacher. If you want a teacher who will encourage you to think for yourself, teach with extreme clarity, and make an impression on you for life then TAKE HIM. YOU are paying for this, make it worth it. Challenge yourself. DO IT!
Dr Darboe is my favorite professor at Shepherd by far, wonderful, funny man. If you want a class that will help you and make you think.. go for it. I really enjoyed the class and even though it was tough at times it was all worth it.
I stumbled across this site and thought I'd check out some of my old professors. I graduated from Shepherd in '94. I'll tell you guys something... if you take his class, you'll remember him more than anyother professor in school. Take him...it will pay off in the long run.
This class was miserable. The information presented was common sense; however, the testing was horrible. He's a tough grader, and I would suggest that anyone taking him not have very many other credit hours when doing so.
he is kind of hard, you just have to pay attention he gives you everything you need to know his stories are good too and he is funny He is one of my favorite professors.
awesome
You will remember everything you learn in this class. Take Dr. Darboe and learn something in college! Even though the class may be hard it is also very interesting and fun. He's a really great teacher and helps you every step of the way.
DARBOE OWNS YOU! THEN HE LAUGHS ABOUT IT!!! BEST TEACHER I'VE EVER HAD!
Great I loved his class

I've never had a teach that has more knowledgable about the subject matter at hand... GREAT TEACHER
Darboe graduated from an Ivy League institution and you never will... True Story

This man is the greatest prof. I've ever had the honor of learning from. His lessons will be with me forever. After being away from Shepherd for almost 10 years, I still miss him.
I was extremely interested in being a Soc. major/Criminology conc. b4 taking his class. I knew the material by heart but since I never worded things in his EXACT manner I got an F on his exams. I can relate all the info. he gave, but in my own PROPER English. He is extremely unfair and everyone I've talked to agrees the same. Now I'm a Psych major
Even though I got a D in this class, I still think it was one of the best classes I've ever had and Darboe is certainly one of the best instructors I've ever had!

This guy did not like a word that I wrote or spoke. I busted my ass in his class and was not rewarded fairly. He was an interesting character and very demanding, but again if he doesn't like you than you are not going to get the grade you deserve.

way difficult but quality dude.
Everyone told horror stories about him, but as long as you go to the class, pay attention, review your notes, everything's fine and dandy! His teaching style is so unqiue, I loved it!
As long as you take notes, attend class, and pay attention, he is a great teacher.
His classes are very clear and informative, but he grades his tests very unreasonably....If you don't put exactly what he wants on his essay exams, which are pretty much all his exams, then you will not do well...I liked his class and I came out of it with a B
When i first took Darboe i thought this guy is crazy. However he was a very hard instructer, i believe i have learned more from him then any other teacher i have ever had. There is horror stories, rumers, and whatever. Those people can believe whatever they want, but he really is a brillant person.
good teacher but very hard
Very difficult to understand, makes people affraid to ask questions. Most people drop his class and anyone around college will tell you to drop him just by saying his name. Out of a class of 30 students 3 passed his class one semester.
He is very hard on his tests! I studied forever for every test and still would fail! For all the effort I put into the class it didnt even pay off in the end!
genuine nut job!
This professor is a very interesting person, and nice, one on one. However, as a teacher, he is terrible. I would go into detail as to just how his class is bad, but it is just so far out there, that it would take too much time to explain. I was a 1st semester junior with a 3.4 gpa, and I dropped out of this class. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS.
Grades very hard, not clear on what he wants, he will tell you one thing and act like he never said it. hard
Shows no respect for students. Complete disregard for many demands facing students with jobs, families.
Ok, so everyone says that you won't learn anything. But they're dead wrong. He's difficult, but I've never learned more in one class. Kids just don't like having to work for their class. You can't snooze through this guy's class. If you aren't willing to work, don't take him. But if you want to really learn from a brilliant man, take Darboe!
He is an awesome teacher and you learn ALOT. He actually got me interested in sociology. You should read and study a little everynight. Tests are long and he is the toughest grader ever. Even if you think you got an A...at most you got a C.
Well, everyone goes on about how they either love this man or hate him. I for one respect him, but I don't care for him as a person. I went to his office once and he called me lazy and said I had problems, and this was the first time we had met and BEFORE I had taken his class. Overall: hard grader, but you learn a lot, so its up to you.
If you are up for a challenge, take Dr. Darboe. He is a great and interesting man, but nearly impossible as a professor. I had to drop his class, as wonderful as I thought it was, because I simply couldn't improve. If you take him, prepare for the challenge.
--One tough class-- Darboe is a true professor. If you want to learn A LOT then shoot for him. However, if you have some other demanding courses (such as myself), and you're not a sociology major, then I wouldn't recommend it. Most horror stories are bunk... he's always ready to talk with those who need or want help, and I know this first-hand.

Well I am a sociology major with concentration on criminal justice and my friend had told me that I should take Darboe for intro because it would help me alot. Yes, the tests aren't a piece of a cake, but I learned so much from Darboe I did get C in the class, but better than any A I ever got!!! Darboe will help you if you go seek it!
verry rude , heartless worst teacher ever
If you want a good grade A or B ? Don't take Darboe! Basicallyany grade you get in his class is two letter grades (at least) below what you would get with any other professor. Very smart. The problem is when you get your exam back! The one u reviewed for 10 hours and got the worst grade ever, when u r sure u put what was in your note book...
difficult is putting it lightly
His class is extremely difficult, but I enjoyed it. I do not regret taking it, but the, literally, 17 or 18 people who dropped did. Seriously, there were only like 7 people left at the end. According to the grades I received I should have failed the class... but I got a B. So, I think he's fair... in the end.
Darboe told me that I would pass his class and I did not. Beware socio majors, you are REQUIRED to take at least one of his classes or you can't graduate w/ a socio degree from SU
he was the worst professor i've ever had!!!!
very hard, but i earned a lot. dont take if you want an a
worst teacher i ever had
you'll learn a lot, but this class is way to hard for people who aren't sociology majors. After the test you may think you have an A but as everyone else has said you get it back and your shocked.I spent hours studying and memorizing notes.Don't take this class unless your a soc major. At least he's funny?
great teacher, extremely hard.
I don't know what his point is by failing people who are trying? (he is an idiot)
USE A VOICE RECORDER IN CLASS!!! GET EVERYTHING HE SAYS ON THE RECORDER!!! ABSOLUTE WORST PROF. EVER!!!
He is a really hard teacher. Have to write everything he says. However, he is more than willing to help you and is a good teacher who knows what he is teaching. He expects you to study, and to pass you have to study a lot, but if you are interested in sociology, I personally think he was a good teacher.
Not an easy professor.Hard to understand, tons of notes, but by far the worst thing is his tests.1 test for half of semester and i got a 45 on it. And i'm an A student. Suggests to everyone to drop his class. Not very helpful to students seeking help.Take only if your a sociology major. Otherwise save you GPA energy and mind.
Definitely not who you should take if you want an easy A. The only grades are tests and a quiz before each test. The quiz is easy if you study, the tests are intense. I honestly liked the class and learned alot, even though I didn't make as high of a grade as I would have liked.
Extremely hard teacher, but I learned so much. I failed basically all of the test but I attended all of the classes and a participated and I got a "C", he is really helpful if you just approach him, He is always available during office hours. Everyone does drop the class, so the students who do stay see that Darboe just puts on an act until everyon
Darboe teaches a very hard class. He is always willing to go over a test or help out a student. You'll have to change the way you learn and the way you study to pass the class, but if you get used to it, it's not so bad.
I think Darboe is good at brainwashing people into thinking he's a genius. If you're weak minded and love it when psychos manipulate your life, then you'd probably like Darboe.
Personal conversations will yield more than lectures. I didn't understand what was expected on exams. Essays are subjective by nature. The material itself is straightfoward, but try not to be deterred by race discussions. Unfortunately, Darboe is living up to his popular reputation and supposed character. His subjectivity doesn't work.
I am not sure how this professor is still teaching. He is absolutely horrible. He says he doesn't want you to write down word for word what he writes on the board, or what he lectures but if you don't memorize it he won't count it. This class was absolutely ridiculous. I failed this class and I attended everyday, took notes, and studied.
I'm not sure how this professor is still teaching. He is ridiculous. If you want to fail and have to retake a class then go ahead and take him. I went to class everyday, took notes and studied. I got 12/100 on his tests. My highest grade was a 24%.
Dr. Darboe is great prof. I don't understand how one could fail his class because he will tell you /everything/ that will be on the exam. He's not manipulative, evil, or out to get you. All that's required is actual EFFORT. He explains how societies have developed step by step and at least for me, it was understandable. AWESOME PROF!
Extremely difficult, but passable. I got an A. Write down definitions word for word and have him check them (and your example for each definition). About a week before a test ask for practice questions. Do them and take them to him as many times as necessary. Stay focused and practiced. A lot of work, but the only way to have a hope of passing.
Best Professor ever!
Awesome Professor! He is hard, but if you want to learn, go to graduate school, or learn good studing techniques, then you should take him. It just takes a little effort and you can easily get an A.
I took every class I could take from Dr. Darboe. I added a second major in Sociology because of Dr. Darboe. He challenges his students and pushes them to the brink of their ability. I am forever grateful for the chance to have him as a professor!
Very helpful to the dedicated student. You will need to push yourself but you will learn a lot. He will push you too. I don't think he understands why I missed the top McMurran Scholar, but I was incapacitated for a while.
Very hard grader!!
Memorize the definitions and the examples & check all of them with him. Understand the theories inside and out. You won't get any credit for BSing and this man can spot it a mile away. He's tough, but he knows what he's talking about. Taking him again and looking forward to it.
Dr. Darboe is a great professor. He honestly cares that every student succeeds. Dr. Darboe explains everything very well and helps anyone who asks him. Some people may say that he is tough, but it is because he actually has expectations for his students unlike most professors. I would recommend anyone taking him, you will learn so much.
Great professor. He is very challenging, but he is willing to help his students when they ask for it. His lectures are interesting. Do NOT miss a class because you will fall behind. I strongly recommend him to anyone because he makes you think and you will learn a lot.
Omg! He is seriously the hardest teacher here at shepherd. I tried to meet with him and it was not helpful! Avoid at all cost!!!!
I give him his due, he's knows his stuff. However, he blames any and all failures on the students even when 3/30 people in the class achieve a PASSING grade on an exam. Somewhat helpful during office hours, but not much. To pass ask for practice questions and memorize definitions word for word. Do not take him unless you're a Sociology major/minor.
very tough, very smart, very helpful..hardest professor ive ever had but also the professor ive learned the most from. I recommend taking him, but not if you arent prepared to give your all.
Dr. Darboe is the best professor I have had at Shepherd. He goes over everything that will be on the exams and makes sure everybody understands the information. Doesn't base the exams on memorizing material, but rather concepts that he goes over with you in class. His class is very easy once you figure out his style of teaching. Highly recommend
He is intelligent, and super, super specific. You can pass his class with flying colors if you take notes word for word, then memorize it, but if you don't understand that what he tells you is exactly what he wants on your tests, you will not do well. If you need help, he will help you. It is far much work for a 101 class.
Dr. Darboe is tough. If you want to get on his good side, show up to class EVERY single time and go to his office and speak with him. He expects you to be pretty much perfect on his test. Study and working hard is the only way for a okay grade. Even with all the hard work, he is worth taking because you WILL learn a lot. He truly enjoys teaching.
This guy is something else. At first I thought he was not so bad but he is a complete jerk. When you get A's on his exam he thinks you're not smart. He hates when people do well. He loves the fact that people fail and doing well pisses him off. He is beyond subjective and a lot of stuff is bull****. I got a B my first class with him so not so bad!
Hes the type of professor where the class is about him, not the students. He like to see people struggle and he starts every lecture off with how dumb and lazy we all are. I did really well in his class and he told other students how much of a failure I will become. However I proved his ass wrong.
This class is super easy once you truly UNDERSTAND.Don't over-think. Do not miss a single class, takes off points. Go in to talk to him if you need help. He is very willing and inspiring. His lectures are fascinating. It's a "tough love" situation. He wants u to do well so he will not lower his standards.
Dr. Darboe is an inspirational man. He is very demanding and expects all of his students to perform their best. I took him for every class he offered. He is respectable and will help any and every student. The horror stories are simply from people who are too incompetent to grasp material. Expect a challenge but I recommend him to everyone!
Dr. Darboe is very demanding and expects all of his students to perform their best. I think that if you can understand how to take his exams and study with others, and more importantly READ THE BOOK you will do fine. He is respectable and will help any and every student. Expect a challenge but I recommend him to everyone!
If you're a sociology major, take him for intro and you'll be glad you did. If you're not a soc major or minor...forget it.
Dr. Darboe can be a helpful and kind teacher, and he does force you to think about what you are learning. However, he doesn't give out enough written work to help you gain a sufficient amount of points in his class, and often times he goes into these rants about what students are saying about him. He is not very professional.
HARD. not saying college should be as easy as cake....but he expects way to much from students who are taking more than his class plus work part time/full time.
intro to Sociology
he has a bad reputation but hes one of the best teachers ive ever had. he explains things so clearly that it seems completely obvious. he really makes you learn. his tests are hard but only because you have to prove to him that you really know and understand the information. i would recommend taking him if you are serious about taking the class.
This class was crazy. He is very intense and super hard. I'm not saying all classes should be easy but this was like senior level. Don't take it if you are not majoring in sociology or a freshman. Just don't even think about it. yes you learn a lot, but your'll never pass his tests higher than a B. It's all about memorization. just stay away.
Dr. Darboe was such an awesome teacher. He is difficult to understand at first, but you get used to his accent. I learned more in his class than I have in any other class. The class is very difficult though. Lots of studying and YOU MUST ATTEND CLASS.
Dr. Darboe is a very good teacher and knows what he is talking about, but the class is not easy by any means. You will have to study, a lot. He will help you if you need it, and you will learn the material. Study hard and you'll be fine. If you're a slacker, this class is not for you
Ethnic Relations' is Dr. Darboe's speciality. If you don't have the same liberal beliefs he does forget about taking this. He likes to scare people and using teaching tactics that should not be used in a college classroom. He is rude and offensive. Bring the book to every class or be prepared to get embrassed.
His class is probably one of the hardest classes I've taken, but I really learned a lot. And if you want help, he will give you as much as you need.
ITS IN THE BOOK. Tips for Darboe students. Know your definitions by heart and be able to give a real world example of it. Don't just practice the definition, practice coming up with examples. Read the book, than read it again and than read it again. Go to his office ask questions. Do not miss classes. Go in with an open mind. Darboe changed my life!
Dr. Darboe is a very good teacher. His class is harder than most you will take here at Shepherd but the quality of teaching he adheres to is top notch. His accent makes him a little hard to understand but he has no problems in clarification. I intend o take another class he teaches.
Dr. Darboe is a great professor. A lot of people say they don't like him but personally I think he's great. He has a thick accent but after a few classes you get used to it! His lectures may be confusing at times but he is more then welcome to clarify if you need it. In his class you are only graded on exams and pop quizzes so make sure you study!
Dr. Darboe is a challenging but considerate professor. His class is tough but its because he truly believes in you and wants to push you to your full potential.
Gives pop quizzes, but always the class before you have a test. He only tests when you know the information, or after a chapter is finished. Very friendly. If you talk to him, he will work with you. Challenging teacher, but you will actually understand and learn the information.
Worst professor I've ever had. He does not connect with his students. Seems to play favorites. If you want to pass his tests, you need to memorize every word that comes out of his mouth and rewrite it verbatim. Learned nothing in this class. Ended up retaking it with a different professor and learned so much more. Do not take Darboe!!!!!!!!!!
His class is really tough, but it is worth taking. Darboe prepare you for real life. His test are essays and if you know the concepts and could explain them you will do just fine. If you are looking for an easy A, Darboe is not it.
In all honesty, Dr. Darboe is a good teacher as far as helping students better understand the material. With that being said, he is the worst exam teacher I have ever had. When taking his 'tests' you would be best served to think of it as three essays on topics he discussed in class. If you miss-spell one word, you are wrong. HARD!!
A lot of people complain about Dr. Darboe expecting too much, but that's really not the case. His tests give you at least 10 different questions to choose from and you only have to answer about 3 or 4. Obviously your answers need to be substantial but it's nice to be able to choose what you are most comfortable with. You will learn a lot!
If you miss classes you will fail. The best way to pass his classes are to take notes and ask questions.
Dr. Darboe expects A LOT. But he explains concepts in depth. He tells you what is on the test. It's up to you to show him that you learned something. He will help you if you ask. His accent does not make the class hard. The hurdle to overcome in his classes is to take responsibility for your own shortcomings.
He's class is difficult because I'm used to cramming things I usually don't understand and that's not an option here. You have to understand what he's teaching in order for you to pass the class. Believe me this class is more difficult than high school honors and AP together, whether you're out of state or in state. It's worth taking though.
He's a fantastic teacher. If you're looking for a class to skip and pass, keep moving, he doesn't want to teach you. If you are looking to actually learn the material, TAKE HIS CLASS. He's willing to help you if you go to his office, he'll explain it until you get it. He is a tough grader, but as long as you take time to learn it, you'll be fine.
He is very specific on what he wants on his exams . It may not have to be word for word but he wants it pretty close.
Despite all of the negative feedback Dr. Darboe receives, I think he's wonderful. He truly cares about making sure students receive an education, teaches straight from the book, and you'll learn the basics better than anyone else. Yes, this class is difficult; you have to be willing to take EXCELLENT notes, study a little each day, and work for it.
Dr. Darboe is notorious at Shepherd for being a difficult professor, but he is one of the best professors you will ever have as a student. He genuinely care about your education and not so much about the grade. If you pay attention and ask questions you will understand and thus pass the famous Darboe exams. I recommend giving him a try. Great class
Dr. Darboe's class is very lecture heavy and requires a very solid knowledge of the material. The quizzes are pop quizzes but are placed at logical intervals throughout the material. Dr. Darboe teaches slowly and thoroughly and builds on all material to make the information as logical as possible. He is very accessible outside of the class room.
I spend 3 hours a day studying for his Social Proplems class. I go to him after every class and show him papers I practice write for studying purposes. Some how, I still end up with 50%s on all my tests. He also doesn't accept funerals as valid excuses for missing class and even states that he missed his own mother's funeral. DO NOT TAKE HIM!!!
Worst teacher I've ever had in my life!!! Says something one minute and then says something completely different. The class' average on tests is 60%.
He tries to be an exceptional professor in his own way. However, his grading criteria is confusing. Do as he says, and you will still get an F on his tests. Nothing will ever be enough for him, even if you spend 2 hours trying to answer his 4 essay questions the best possible way. I would not recommend him.
It was hard but overall I really enjoyed his class. Great teacher who cares about your success. Hes a tough grader. However, if he sees that youre trying and participating in class he will work with you!
He is a great teacher, he just grades very specifically and toughly. The only grades in his class are unannounced quizzes.
Dr. Darboe gets a bad rep at Shepherd, however that is because of students not taking the time to learn the content he provides. It is a difficult class and he is very specific on what he wants, but nobody will prepare you better with lessons both related to Sociology and life.
I took this class at Shepherd and had to withdrawal from it. I took it at a different university and got an A+. I'd highly recommend looking at a different professor.
If I could get Dr. Darboe a 0, I would. He's an extremely intelligent man and he really does want his students to learn, but his expectations for his students are so high he sets himself up for disappointment. The ONLY way you'll do well in this class is if you memorize everything he says and repeat it verbatim on the exam. Just don't take Darboe.
This was a super hard class but if you're willing to study and show up to class and actually work hard to pass, you'll learn a lot and its super rewarding. I looked forward to this class more than any of my others.
