too much too study i had to drop! difficult exams way too hard...sorry!
Too hard!!!!!!!
I took this in the summer. Tons of information in a short amount of time. You have to be willing to commit to studying if you want to do well (it is possible, but it's not an easy class). Super nice woman and very intelligent.
I hated this class, but if you stick w/it, it really teaches you how to be a good student. She's a great instructor, dedicated & sacrifices alot of her personal time to help her students. But to be clear, there are no breaks in her class. You have to work your butt off.
She is a very unclear teacher. She says, " I may test you on that..." to nearly everything, which should be something everyone is thinking anyways. There is way too much information and she's making things too hard on everyone. Don't take her if you want to like biology afterwards.
This is a crazy woman! She expects your life to revolve around her class, and on her first day she announces to her students that she expects you to study 12-18 hours per week. She is unclear about her lectures. Don't take her class if you actually want to understand the material.
She is very nice woman but she is very hard. do not take her intro class you will not learn anything you will be lost. another thing do not take her class with any other difficult class.
here's how i see it, all the people that gave this extremely dedicated and intelligent woman a bad review didnt pass her class because they wanted to slack off. yes, she does demand a lot but you know about it the first day of class!!! took this class in the fall received a D, just getting ready to finish in the spring and i have an A. great prof:)
Great Professor! She is ALWAYS willing to help. Don't let the first day scare you off. Once you get in the habit of studying it becomes easy!
oh yeah I remember her two years ago, she was cool. kinda hard but i got a B. i thought she was pretty hot but then she had a kid I think. i like the fact that she was hispanic and had dr. in front of her name i think. oh yeah baby! anyways besides me drooling over her, she knows her stuff, was very helpful and I recommend her.
the class is very hard. she expects alot from her students, BUT she is always willing to help. she loves what she does and it really shows in her teaching. she cares and really wants her students to succeed. i highly recommend her. best teacher ive ever had! studying is a must. if i have the opportunity i will take her class again. learned a lot.
she is very proud of her "tricky" exam questions
Dr. G tells you her expectations from the beginning. She may seem intimidating, but she's very open, honest, helpful, and above all, fair. She is very thorough and she prepares you for University life. If you're a BIO major or you're going into the medical field, I highly recommend her.
I was so intimidated by the workload and her expectations that I almost dropped. I am so glad I did not! I got an A. She knows the real world is not that easy. She did not give it to me for nothing, I had to work my butt off, but I felt so good, like I actually achieved and learned a lot because of it. She's awesome! Go Dr. G! :)
Dr. G is definitly a difficult teacher, shes not going to hand you a good grade and make life easy for the semester.you will need to work your butt off, but its all worth it at the end. although shes difficult, she never hesitates to help. very approachable and easy to talk to..dont be intimidated. Passing her class is the most awesome feeling!!!!!
Tests are Multiple choice (a,b,c,d,e,ab,cd,de) (all of the above, 1 of the above, 2 of the above, etc.), Matching, T/F, Essay (subjective grading), etc. Do not take her class w/ any other subject or don't take her class at all if you can help it. I worked way too hard to get a good grade. Half of the final you have to study on your own.....
"Dr. G" is so proud of herself and accomplishments- gets very annoying. Not very helpful at all.
Hardest class Ive ever taken! If you want to get an A or B study everything. Be prepared to give up your life before taking her because youre going to be in seclusion. Even though she's hard, she'll prepare you for any program...I highly recommend her.
She's a very nice person...but the class is really hard and she's a very tough grader! Her lectures are clear but if your looking for an A or B in this class look elsewhere this is the hardest I ever worked for a grade and I still didn't cut it.
She is very nice and willing to help you. However, she is also a difficult teacher. She loves her field and it shows, but she is a great professor. Bio is a hard subject in general so that accounts for some claims about her. But she makes it as easy as possible while not just handing grades out. She is does what teachers should do well, teach!
Dr. G is the nicest most willing to help teacher I have had. Her class is no cake walk. It requires a lot of time and personal dedication. But that's Biology. She is wiling to help you as much as she can and wants to see you succeed if you are willing to stick with it! :)
Took Dr. G in Winter for Health Science 1. She was kinda hard, because she is originally a Microbiology and Biology professor. Like her class alot, the A I got was very satisfying because I worked my butt off for it. Very cool teacher, willing to help everyone! Extra Credit was available quite a bit.
She was amazing. I admired her willingness to make you internalize the concepts. I took her Biology class a year and a half ago and I thought I was going to die! She is difficult, but I respect her. I dropped her class because I had too much going on, but if she's still teaching next year I will take her again. =]
Dr. G. was one of the most amazing instructors I've ever had. All of you who complain about her being too hard, and never being able to pull off a good grade with her...well let me tell you something. I took four other demanding classes right along with Biology, and I earned a B+. I worked my butt off for it, so yes, it IS possible. She is defini
Dr. G has got to be one of the smartest professors I've ever had. Her class was fun, and she's so passionate about biology. It's no cake walk, the class is very tough, and requires a lot of work, but the only people who didn't pass are probably the ones who barely studied. I would definitely take this teacher again.
wow.... if you are truly interested in micro, then take her...because by the end you will know everything! stay away... straight A 4.o GPA and I dropped this class. Out of control!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dr. G is an amazing teacher. She is absolutely brilliant and she is very willing to stay after or meet in her office to clarify anything that was unclear. Her class is pretty difficult, but you end up learning so much. Her tests are hard, but she has a study guide available on her website. Tests are taken from lecture notes. Very good teacher.
Avoid at all costs, if you are looking to take a bio class to get for some arbitrary requirement for a degree take this class somewhere else. The classes in the beginning were nothing but green peace agenda at its worst. In case you dont fully understand let me tell you test scores. 20-F 8-D 6- C 1B 1-A and that was considered good by her. AVOID
AVOID THIS CLASS IF YOU CAN...BUT IF YOU HAVE TO TAKE THIS CLASS!..Don't take any other classes.Have all your focus in this one.She demands way too much!!!!!!
Study AT LEAST 20hours per week and u should be fine.
She is the worst, and I mean the worst teacher I have ever had in my academic career! She demands way too much, and says it will pay off later. Having a 200 point test every week, on top of 50-100 point quizes is ridiculous! By the end of the semester there were only about 10 out of 100 students left in her class! She is by far the hardest teacher!
This teacher is stupid. She told us we did a project wrong and to redo it. instead of helping, she left the room. we found it interesting that our neighbors got kudos for theirs, but looked exactly the same. instead of redoing it, we showed her the old one. she then told us that we did it perfectly! idiot. really mean and arrogant. hated her!
I really don't understand how this teacher still works at rcc when she gives us the results to her tests no more then 5 people get A's the rest of the class get D's or F's and instead of offering us help she says it doesn't matter to me whether u guys get A's or F's... What's the point of being a teacher if u don't care if ur students learn? Who knows what's wrong with her and the people who still let her work there... Don't take her!!
She expects way to much from her students, she literally told us that an "A" students studies 40hrs a week! I mean who has 40 extra hours in a week to study for her class, most people have jobs and she is making it impossible to try and pass this class so people can further their careers. AVOID at all costs
I want to inform students to avoid this professor and spend your credits on a positive, kind, amd patient teacher. I was a A student before this class. I rate her poorly because she makes rude comments about people that have nothing to do with the class. She was insulting on various levels. Please respect your rights as a student and choose wisely!
this class is really interesting. if you do the work you will get a good grade i think that she makes science easier to understand if you are willing to dedicate youself
This teachers actually not that bad.she's very hard no doubt about that I've never had to study as hard in other classes but..she's funny and her whole life is based on bio she loves it!and u see that when she teaches and it helps u want learn I honestly learned a lot. So she's a good teacher but VERY HARD!so take her you'll learn but u wont pass
She has opposite days. :) very confusing at times. Don't recommend her. She wants you to critically think so therefore we are to coorect her during lecture. Is that trully why she wants us to correct her or can it be because she doesn't know herself? She is approachable but I don't feel she knows how to teach.(even if it's adult learning).
This lady is the devil. I don't understand how she can still be teaching at a college with the fail rate that she has. 6 students with an A for 3 classes! Her lectures are scattered, her tests are the hardest, and she expects you not to do anything other than study Bio for the semester. I did read these comments before enrolling, figured the bad results were from people who didn't put themselves into it and work. If you don't believe me, go for it. Good luck! Better get comfortable under ur rock
Excellent Professor, really knows her subject and is very professional at teaching biology. I took Human Genetics for fun, and learned a lot! I even changed my major to Biology. The material can get a bit challenging and her tests are quite hard, but overall I ended up with an A. Just study everyday! simple as that.
Take this class by itself if you can. She is no easy prof and she can come accross rough at first. I hated her class but like the subject. I must give Dr. G respect as a professor. I didn't quite grasp her teaching, but she is more than willing and available for you during so many office hours she has. I'd only rec. if you are a BIO major.
Very hard teacher. You need to be motivated to learn, don't fall behind & be organized for a good grade.1st two tests where extremely hard,2nd two much easier.lots of EC.Use her office hrs, much more approachable.30-40hrs of study time for an A(avg stud.)Nice lady-hang in there&don't give up!Use her slides to study&text bk if you don't understand.
Had her for Micro, this is an extremely hard subject. Her tests and quizzes are very hard but if you study 4 hours a day you should be fine. Use her office hours and go for any extra credit she gives. She is an awesome professor and you learn so much in her class! So glad I took her!
This is a hard class, but the instructor is even harder. I had a strong desire to take this class, but regret taking it. I studied 2-3 hrs per day and got a "C+." I was a 4.0 student. Notes are neverending and assigned readings are crazy. It was too much. Save your GP, take it with a different instructor.
This is a difficult professor, but if you do the study guides and keep up with them, there is no way you can fail. You will use the textbook everyday. I learned more than what I expected. Good class, good teacher :)
Great professor, you will learn a lot. Lectures are great, but you must study on your own. Luckily the book is very easy to read and grasp. Stay on top of things and prof Gutierrez will help add to what you are learning on your own. Highly recommend. Do your job as a student, talk to her (she is nice), and you will get a B like me, or higher.
Dr. G. is by no means an easy teacher. She expects A LOT out of the students. I do believe that she is a great teacher and wants us all to do well. I think the class is hard but you will feel good in the end if you've done your job. It can be done. I am halfway trough the semester.. so we shall see.
If you want to be spoonfed answers and questions for the test, do not bother taking her. If you are here to learn and want to do well in PA or Nursing school then I highly recommend her. Several opportunities for extra credit. Once you get the hang of her style its just reading and ALOT of memorization. She is great overall!
Does not let you review test only gives score. Studyguide not very helpful. Speeds thru chapters. Only take class if prior knowledge of human genetics
The class itself is hard with lots of complicated material. This Professor makes the class really interesting and puts a personal take on Biology. Amazing Professor who gives you every opportunity to succeed in her class. If you do everything she says you have to do, you'll easily pass the class with an A or B.
Difficult for the sake of being difficult. She's more interested in making students better students rather than teaching Micro! It is test-intensive with tests geared more towards knowing how to take multiple choice tests rather than on the material. Avoid her if you can, but if you are desperate, plan on 30+ hours/week of work!
She is awesome! I enjoyed every class! She is not easy, but nothing in science is! She knows what she is talking about. She is very helpful at explaining the ideas and concepts. She is very hardworking and it shows!!!
Dr G requires at least 10-15 hours a week of study time. She expects her students come to class knowing everything. Gives SO SO SO Much HW! YOULL SEE.Tests are multiple choice(6-7options).I doubted she'd be as bad as the reviews I read prior to taking the class but I've put in the time&work but she is extremely hard!Doubt me?take her.Good Luck haha
Dr. G is a great professor. She makes you think critically. At first I didn't like her teaching style, but I got used to it. I know that after taking her class I am ready for a career in the health profession. I would advise her class only if it is the only class you are taking. I studied literally everyday for 2-3 hours. Her office hrs are helpful
Great Teacher! Hard work but an A is obtainable
Ms. G is a very good teacher happy to teach the students. She is willing to help if you ask for it, But very hard. if you are going to take her class make sure it's the only one you are taking. You will have alot of work to do outside class. If you don't do the homework you will not pass.
Gutierrez is an amazing instructor! She is very tough but will gladly answer questions and is very helpful! She loves to see her students succeed! Strongly suggest her!
Her class is a little too much, requires alot of work and study. A good grade is definetly achieveable if youre focusing alot on that one class. Do good on each exam, the homework, and labs
Very disappointed in Mrs. Gutierrez class.
Very disappointed in this individual, and her class. It was a waste of time.
Dr. G will WORK you to the bone and you'll be a better student because of it. She's a great teacher, but her class is extremely time consuming, so be prepared to have zero social life if you're planning on getting anything higher than a C. Read the textbook, complete all of the extra credit, and utilize her office hours if you're stuck.
Dr. G will WORK you to the bone and you'll be a better student because of it. She's a great teacher, but her class is extremely time consuming, so be prepared to have zero social life if you're planning on getting anything higher than a C.
She says she cares for us (i ain't buying that) then says "figure it out yourself" online hw are not hw they are quizes that takes out points, the questions on master bio are NOT in the book, the lab question are NOT in the book. 90% of this class you have to google it then be lucky if that is what she really wants because she wont be clear at all
I liked Dr. Gutierrez. She is really smart and knows what she is taking about. However, her tests are pretty rough and there is so many mastering bio assignments due. Also, all the assignment work mostly has to be googled because it is not in the book. Lecture is not mandatory but Lab is. Extra credit saved me at the end and reading helps ALOT.
This woman is brilliant. I took her class in the Fall. I learned so much that it really is making me want to change my career.
BEWARE! You will end up teaching yourself half the time. Sometimes she gives good lectures, but half the time she is talking about how Disneyland and her neighbors need to stop using water. The Mastering Bio online was ALOT, but I didn't really mind that because they were easy points. She does offer extra credit, but its a lot so you have to work!
First off, she knows what she is talking about and has a passion for bio, BUT she CANNOT teach!!!!! Please please please just avoided this teacher. She reads off a powerpoint, and talks about the wasting of water from her neighbors. Take another teacher, or wait till another semester to take this class. AVOID Dr. G.
Dr.G is a pretty good teacher. If you really study the powerpoints and actualy understand the concept you should do okay on the test. She pretty much makes questions from the powerpoint. There is a crazy amount of homework so I would only take 3 classes maybe even 2.
She knows what she is talking about, but she doesn't teach at all. A lot of homework and her tests are very tough.
I don't know what everyone is talking about. The mastering is done before class to get you ready for class and lab. You can find the lab answers in her biochem test powerpoint. She really cares and work with you, also, she's open to meeting with you to talk about how to improve your grade. She knows her stuff!! Best science teacher I've taken.
You have to be able to put in the effort! She gives you the materials you need and what you choose to do with them are your choice. I hardly used the textbook, but i suppose it may help. SI sessions are extremely helpful especially when you do not understand what happened in lecture. She is really sweet and cool, if you can take her for lab do so!
I felt like there was a lot of work as far as the Mastering Bio website, but Dr. G doesn't assign homework really. She does have study guides on her website which are life savers for her tests and has the power points available too. She LOVES biology and wants you to love it and understand it too. I would love to have her again.
I almost died after her class. Its a LOT of material. Thats why its so difficult. You cant just read the book. You have to do the Mastering AP, powerpoints, lectures, AND your personal notes . dont try to have a life, girlfriend, or anything else. Shes a community college teacher teaching at a graduate level.
Amazing professor. Influenced my decision to major in biology. You will learn A LOT from her. Requires studying, you can't wing this class.
I'll admit that I was one of the people who thought Dr. G was nuts for thinking we were capable of all the hard work she gave us. Then she made me realize that I'M nuts for thinking I was incapable! Dr. G not only teaches you biology, she teaches you how to be a good student. She makes you realize you're more capable that what you even imagined.
If you're willing to put in the time for this class then you'll get a good grade in this class. It's loads of work, but it's worth it and prepares you if you're planning on transferring to a 4-year uni. Her powerpoints are self-explanatory so there's not much for her to teach and all the time they reflect what's gonna be on the test. (DO THE EC!!!)
Best professor ever!!! Dr.G expects a lot from her students. She is very helpful and loves when students go to her office to ask for help also you can expect to have no life while taking her class.
must really understand the material to get an A in the class. her exams are tough! grading criteria is extremely confusing and unclear, there isnt one right answer. if your willing to put all the time in the class its worth it, overall good professor but your doing most of the heavy lifting
Dr. G is an amazing professor. She tries to act tough but she really wants her students to succeed. She is very passionate about what she does, and she passes that on to her students. Its not an easy class by all means, she wants you to work. But she celebrates successes and I'm going to make sure I get her for my microbiology class!
Its a rough class at first, but Mrs. G really helps you have makes bio easier! Her lectures are important and helpful! You have a lot of exams and lab exam but it helps because if you don't do the best in one of them, then you can make it up! She seems tough but once you get into the semester she is really funny! Lots of extra credit given!!!
This class requires a lot of time and effort, so as to understand the material. Dr G helped me a lot, each time I go to her office. And i must say, she's a nice professor! I took 4 classes, including Bio, and I got an A. I loved this class. The lectures was fun. Take DR G!
I've never worked so hard for a B in my life. Her exams seem designed to make us fail. She assigns so much homework that takes away time from real studying. Most of her class average scores were failing, and that's the way she seems to like it. She's a smart lady, but this class is definitely not at a CC level. Don't take her if you need an A.
Dr. G will make you work extremely hard for a passing grade. She is extremely specific with everything you have to do and is a tough grader. Everything in her lab must be perfect and lab requires you to have an art major otherwise she will not accept your work or will give you a lower grade. She assigns extra credit which helped a lot.
Very Hard. I had her for my Micro. 1 Lab and the whole class had an average of 33% on the first quiz. She expects you to figure out everything on your own without any of her assistance (this is how a doctor works, according to her). I spent 4+ hrs./day studying, was not working a p/t job, and it still did not help get a better grade. Do not take!
I have heard a lot of bad reviews about this Dr. G but trust me she is an amazing person. Always available for help her students. Give respect to her students. Overall I like her class. I learnt a lot.
Terrible. Exams are ridiculously difficult, with no cushioning. No partial credit given. If you get one question wrong its all wrong. Laughed at me when handing my grade back during a midterm. Gave false promises through semester. She says she wouldnt fail anyone unless they really wanted it, but gave several Ds. Shouldve dropped. Stay away
Dr. G was great to take during this pandemic. I took 2 other science courses & although I got a B I could have obtained an A if I would have figured how to study for her mini quizzes sooner. From the beginning you have to be on you A game in this class. Lecture are great, lab was fun learned a lot & she gives extra credit. Totally recommend her !!
Dr. G has good intentions in making her students be ready for nursing word but not everyone going for nursing ,which is part of the problem. She is a wonderful scientist but she can lack people skills. She loses her patience when students don't understand lab techniques. Micro is hard, but the teacher should know that and teach accordingly.
I did not have the same experience with Dr.G as others did. She did not use the class period to lecture instead go on an hour rant about anti-vaxer and things of that nature. She accused the whole class of cheating during E-classes, instead of taking self-responsibility for not properly preparing us for her exams. Please AVOID at all costs
Knew she wasn't a good fit the very first day of class. I have her for lab in bio and she does not know when to stop talking. She is the queen of micromanaging and talks condescendingly to us when she lectures. Her instructions for labs are beyond confusing. She's so impatient when students have issues and ask questions.
Run! She is so horrible. I never in my college career fought so hard with a professor. She is unorganized. She claims to help you but when you ask for it she is Highly condescending. She made me hate science. Take anyone else! She claims to set you up for RN school. No, not even close. She brags about her A students. Trust me RUN! Red flag!
Fell behind having to disperse points into bigger chunks having to combine exams. Humiliates those who have lower grades than an A, when exam results come in and says things like " can you believe someone really put this down for an answer", and will laugh. Makes inconsiderate jokes, study guides are useless, lectures are an autobiography.ETC.
she provides study guides ahead of time, gives access to pre-recorded lectures. she is available outside of lecture. she amazingly all the content for the lecture, lab, and diseases to help us because it will feel overwhelming at first.if you are looking for an easy A, this is not it. She is big on critical thinking and learning metrics conversion
Last minute our designated professor had to take a leave of absence and thankfully Dr. G stepped in to teach our class. She will scare you on the first day with her class expectations but that is because she wants us to be the best medical professionals. She made the lecture fun and I finished the class being more knowledgeable & confident.
Worst professor ever! Unfortunately Biology is a general Ed class so I had no choice (she was the only one that fit my schedule). Read the reviews and it was a mixture between good and bad, so I gave it a try. GIVES A LOT OF WORK. Exams are NOT multiple choice, and speaks fast during lectures. (Final exam is all 30 chapters)
Very detailed exams, yells at the class often. She offers some extra credit but you'll have to work for it. An A is possible but it's the hardest Ive ever had to work. if you take her, READ THE TEXTBOOK METICULOUSLY, don't ignore lecture. You'd probably only have to do half the work with a different professor for micro so take someone else tbh
She was amazing! I am so glad I took this class with her. The class is tough, and she WILL push you mentally, but it is so that you can one day be the best healthcare professional you can be. An A is possible, you just have to put in the work. The class is busy. She is more than fair on assignments/grading and always willing to help her students.
I really liked her, but her class is no joke. Her exams are difficult and detailed and she grades tough, but she is also very generous and offers extra credit occasionally - you just have to work for it! I took this class along with BIO-50B, which I would not recommended, but it is doable. You have to be dedicated or you will not succeed with her.
Great professor and extremely knowledgable. Extremely test heavy in both lab and lecture. She wants you to know how the "right answer" on a test question works. Gives plenty of EC opportunities and solid feedback. Biggest advice is to study heavily. I hadn't studied like this since HS (11 years ago) and barely escaped with a B. Not an easy class.
Dr. G is the best professor! The class isn't easy but she makes it so fun. I was never bored in her 7am class. She expects a lot out of her students and the tests are challenging but she really cares about her students and truly wants them to succeed. She gives lots of extra credit opportunities, you just have to work for it. Definitely take her!
Professor Gutierrez's class is no walk in the park, but if you put in the work, an A is possible. Her exams are tough, but she offers extra credit. I found unstuckstudy and the textbook essential for study prep.
The professor uses a teaching technique called the Socratic Method, which means that even if you find one answer to a question, you have to think about the other answers related to it. I'm not used to it and can be difficult to follow if you haven't been taught that way before. The class also has daily quizzes that heavily affect your grade.
I didn't feel comfortable being around her. I tried her office hours but it didn't work. She always seemed frustrated and accused me of loosing things. She needs to work herself more. Don't take her please! I felt uncomfortable in her class and hated every second of it. I need to go to mental hospital to make me feel better.
I fought super hard to pass this class, many different topics to cover in such a short amount of time, and she sometimes assumes that you should know everything otherwise she may berate you, can really stress you out at times She's overbearing, accepts 0 makeups
Dr. G class is very tough and expects alot out of her students! But if you put in the work and reachout for help she will guide you into the right direction to pass this class. She provided alot of resources with her office hours and tutoring from previous students. I truly believe she helped me become a better student!
