She is a nice lady, but her lectures really are not helpful at all. I spent about 3/4 of the term going to other lectures.
I am absolutely certain that 2/3 of the class changed majors by the end of the year, also fairly certain one kid was on some sort of hallucinogen throughout the two semesters I saw him. It was an interesting class.
I had her last year. She was great. She may be hard to understand at first because of her accent but once you get used to it, you realize that she covers everything for exams. She doesn't surprise you with any questions. She's nice and has a sense of humor.
Monica is a really caring professor, she covers exactly whats on the test and firmly believes that you shouldn't waste time reading the textbook. If you ever need to ask her a question after class she always stays after and gives you her full attention. Slideshows are available online and are helpful. I'll use them for 102 for sure.
Dr. Illes is so caring and considerate! She is willing to help you even during times that are not her office hours! Best Chemistry Professor! Would definitely recommend her.
Loved her class! Her presentations and recitation classes were extremely interactive. She is very easy to talk to and is always willing to help. The best part is, she remembers the names of her students very well and you'd have no problem introducing yourself every time you approach her for clarifying your doubts.
Explains chem concepts really clearly. Will help you a lot if you approach her. Stays back after class if you need her help. I regret not going to her lectures instead of my assigned professor's lectures. Really really really helpful. Can't emphasize this enough. Very nice person, knows everyone's names in my class.
Hate her, changed course policy so much. Far to technical to even understand. Took her class twice because I failed it the first time due to her idiocracy.
She's alright. Her lectures aren't very useful, and could even end up confusing you more because she doesn't elaborate that well. I would recommend that you just read the book instead.
Dr. Ilies does a great job with teaching an introductory level class and she teaches you how to study better for exams. Learned a lot in her class. Highly recommend going to her lectures! Really, really helpful. Very nice person, really caring for her students. And the Power Point slides are great and always posted.
Ilies is an awesome professor. She responds quickly to emails and is really helpful in answering questions. Exams can get a little tricky but if you study the slides and make sure you understand the concepts, you should be okay.
Monica goes out of her way to make sure you have enough material to learn and study from. She also tries to learn the names of people who come to her office hours and tutoring sessions. Try to get a smaller lecture class size in order to get more specialized teachings. Her accent can be hard to understand, but she is still the best chem lecturer.
Great teacher. Organized, logic, talented at teaching. I highly recommend.
She has a good knowledge about the subject and her lectures a brief and useful. Some of her lectures did not include important portions of the syllabus. This was the only drawback. Overall she is a good teacher, and offers help outside class.
She's great. I'll take CHEM 102 with her for sure.
She is very passionate in her lectures and asks at the end of each lecture what students did not 100% understand. In the following lecture, she then takes time to go over concepts that were missed most to make sure students understand. Her lectures are engaging, although slightly basic due to it being an introductory chemistry class.
Monica is a great professor. Had her for chem 101 honors. Tests can be hard since its 4 points off each question wrong, but if you study the review sheets and the practice exam, there's no reason not to get at least a 92. If you participate in class, she'll add points on to your final grade. Posted lectures are incredibly helpful.
She is well-spoken and clearly knows her subject well. I wouldn't recommend anyone else for chemistry. I had her for both 101 and 102, and if you can do that as well, you will be in a good place.
Monica is awesome. Posted lecture notes are great. Use them to study for the exams. The exams aren't easy, but if you study the review sheet and the notes, you can do well. If you have her for honors, make sure you participate as she gives extra credit for it.
This is the best elective course I've ever taken!! The whole class was application oriented and ended with a 2 days visit at a pharmaceutical company where we got to see hand's on everything we learned in class. Dr. Ilies really knows her stuff and how to explain it such that everybody gets it. We worked a lot in pairs and learned a lot. Awesome!
-Loves to laugh with students: if she doesn't "joke" around with a student, then she does not prefer him/her -She teaches CHEM 121 for chem majors and the laboratory component for CHEM 123 for chem majors -Personable and understanding of students' personal issues
Ilies gives such great examples from daily life that it's easy to get the material. Lectures are so engaging and fun. Loves to ask questions in class. You get participation points if you answer them often. Makes lots of jokes. Great at explaining the basics for orgo. Great gen chem revision for MCAT, too.
Dr. Ilies has been an inspirational professor, and her lectures are very insightful and explain Chem topics really well. She has great lecture notes, which help a lot with the exams. She teaches honors Chem, and I was honored to take her class!
The chemistry sequence at Drexel University is REALLY hard. I took AP Chem in high school and I still had to work super hard just to get away with a C in this class. There's no curve, no retakes, no nothing. You get one shot so study hard and DON'T procrastinate.
Dr. Ilies is a great teacher! Go to lectures - keep up with the notes! Caring, willing to meet to help you understand the material - even outside her office hours. She provides lots of sources to help you learn: lecture notes from all lecturers, review sheets, practice questions, videos - in addition, Dr. King runs review sessions before exams.
classic gen chem class, but Monica taught me how to trust myself and how to think for myself. That was more important than my grade. Had trouble with my math. She helped me a lot with it. Went from a D on the first exam to an A- on the final, This teacher gets an "A+" from me.
absolutely phenomenal at explaining things, best lecture slides out of every chem professor, cares about students
She is the best lecturer for freshman chemistry. Her slides are informative while not being too wordy, so even if you aren't in her class, reading her slides will prep you well for the test.
Awesome explainer and moves at the right pace.
Amazing teacher with amazing power points. She's great at explaining the fundamentals, which all the other orgo teachers failed to do. You have to work for the class, but its really worth it and it gives you a way better understanding of organic chemistry
Dr. Ilies is an awesome professor who is extremely knowledgeable about her subject area. She clearly cares about her students and likes to see them succeed. All questions are answered very well.
Dr. Ilies really cared about helping me when I came to her during her office hours.. Her support was the reason I passed this course
Monica is the best chemistry professor at Drexel! I had her for freshmen year chemistry and it was such a nice experience.
Dr. Ilies is a fantastic teacher and is always so attentive and helpful. If you have any questions she is always ready to answer them and always goes over things from the previous lectures that students did not understand. I wish I could have her for all of my chemistry courses at Drexel.
Dr. Ilies is very organized. Her lectures are very well planned and she covers everything the syllabus says she will in the given time period. She is very open to meetings and is very helpful when asking questions. Dr. Ilies responds very quickly to her email and will give the feedback you asked for.
Organized. Gets through all the material in the slides. Makes an effort to know your name. Knows her stuff. Definitely the best chem lecturer.
I love Dr. Ilies. She's a great teacher and she makes an effort to get to know her students. Definitely my favorite of the chem lecturers.
Despite Dr. Ilies' intelligence and accomplishments, I found CHEM101 to be convoluted and overcomplicated. I feel that because of Dr. Ilies' natural understanding of the subject, she tends to gloss over main points as if they are intrinsically known by her students. A lot of students love her, but those students tend to be students who like chem.
Awesome at explaining things! She uses simple words that everybody understands. I hated AP chem. All I had to do was memorize. I took Monica's class and I finally understood chem! It's all logic. Went to her lectures and student hours. Didn't need textbook. It clicked - I started to like it! Guess she just made me put my best foot forward :)
No, I didnt do well in this class but its completely my fault. Dr. Ilies taught everything well and offered so much help outside of class, but my failure in test performance is what got me here. She can be intimidating at first, but she genuinely cares about her students.
Dr. Ilies has AMAZING lectures: super clear and well explained. Never need to memorize any concepts as she explains them so well. Ample review materials supplied for test study. Knew all students by name by the end of the course! Genuinely cares about her students.
An overall amazing professor and presenter! Her powerpoint presentations and explanations of topics were very clear and easy to understand. She definitely is passionate about the topic and about her students. As someone who hated Chem in high school, this was a great class to take to refresh my knowledge.
She's very clear and kind. She tells jokes and makes you interested in what shes talking about. But the class isn't easy so do pay attention, take notes, and study.
Dr. Ilies is the best professor I've had in any of my courses. She is a great lecturer and always explains things in great detail, and encourages questions in her lectures. She also makes it a point to learn each one of her students's names--even in a 250 person lecture. This just emphasizes how much she cares about her students.
Chem is hard enough as it is, but Monica does NOT make it any easier. She is not the best lecturer, so you don't need to come, because they have like 100+ people. She posts all her slides online which helps. There are 2 ways you're passing the class. 1. You're a BEAST at chem 2. You go to her office hours every day, buy Chegg, and pray you pass.
Happy with Monica in CHEM 101- 102! She summarizes all you need to know for exams, solves lots of useful problems in class. Go to her lectures! I rarely used the textbook. She explains in different ways, until you get it. She coordinates 1000 students & provides lots of helpful materials: videos, review sheets, practice tests. Best organized class!
I took CHEM 101-102 with Dr. Ilies and chose her for CHEM 241 and am so glad I did. I liked that she asks us to know WHY we choose answers, not just memorize them like other professors. She teaches in details - I liked that she showed even the math behind equations, and gives many interesting examples from nature, industry, other science classes.
Dr. Ilies is one of the best professors I ever had., Her lectures are helpful in the way that she explains everything so throughly. If anyone had a question she would answer it clearly. In a 150 person lecture she took the time to learn people's names. Got a C since tests were kinda hard for me, but my peers did a lot better
Took this through zoom did not find the lectures helpful. She seems very kind and wants to help her students. Her exams are very difficult and hw can be challenging. Hw must be submitted using turn it in for some reason. Can't really help friends with hw, tried that and received a 0 on one of the assignments because are structures were "too similar
Was nervous about orgo but Monica made me love it. She doesn't want you to memorize. She grades your understanding, encourages questions, prepares her lectures in details & explains stuff very well, with jokes & great daily life analogies. Many students participated in discussion during Zoom sessions & office hours. She motivated us to be active.
I took CHEM241 online and absolutely loved it. The class mirrored an in-person class environment with a lot of participation from students. Professor Ilies' lectures are amazing, she explains concepts really well, and we practiced a lot of questions in class. The hw is a little challenging, but the exams are much easier and graded more leniently.
I was nervous to take Chem at Drexel, but Dr. Ilies made it wonderful. The way she teaches and cares about her students makes her a professor who stands out from the crowd. She helps you really understand the concepts by making you think about your thinking and encouraging you to engage with the material. Great experience and I highly recommend.
She burns through 3 hours worth of lecturing in 50 minutes. She goes way too fast to understand what she's saying or write anything down. She doesn't explain wrong answers. She spends maybe 10 seconds per slide, which are from 20 years ago, disorganized, and crowded. You're better off skipping her lectures and studying on your own.
Monica is amazing! She really cares about her students and makes a point to learn everyone's name. She's super helpful and very approachable. Lecture was always fun and not too intense. Exams were pretty easy and were covered by lecture notes and recitation problems.
Professor Ilies is great! She makes the transition from high school to college smooth, and leads engaging lectures. Make sure to participate occasionally, and you will do well in the course. Dr. Ilies is very approachable and she truly wants her students to succeed.
Professor Ilies was a fantastic teacher! Her lectures really broke down the material very well and she did a great job of connecting new topics to previous topics, which made learning new concepts much easier. She has also been so approachable, either before, during, or after class, and during her office hours! I really enjoyed learning from her!
Out of each of the the Chem 101/102 professors, Dr. Ilies is the best in my opinion. Her lectures are very helpful and seem to keep you prepared for exams. She genuinely cares about students and is very responsive to any confusion a student may have. Would definitely take again.
Dr. Ilies is extremely kind and will never hesitate to help you in any way she could. The lectures and recitation are very engaging, which creates a great sense of community with your peers, especially for chemistry majors. Her class is enjoyable and fun to be a part of. Dr. Ilies eases the pressure that you may have when you transition to college.
Very knowledgeable and very kind. Definitely recommend taking her class.
I had Dr. Ilies for CHEM 102. This class was the hardest class I've taken at college, but she is fabulous. The class was very credit/time/material intensive, but Dr. Ilies is great with her lectures. She's as sweet as she is knowledgeable. Exams are difficult, but study and you'll get an A or B. Anyone who dislikes her was too lazy to do the work.
For any Drexel student taking chemistry, I could not recommend Dr. Ilies more. Prior to college, I did not have the greatest background in chemistry, but Dr. Ilies presents the material in such an understandable way. She truly does care about her students. Chemistry is hard, but it's not impossible. Take advantage of all of the resources!
She is a real Gem! I can't imagine doing chem 101 and 102 without her. Her lectures were straight to the point. If you participate and pay attention, there is no way you would not pass. I hated chemistry before her class, but I am now considering a chemistry minor.
lover her! she really gives you every opportunity and as much help as you need to understand her course!
Dr. Ilies Genuinely cares about the subject, and heavily encourages participation. Even if you aren't the best at the material, if you show that you are putting in your all, Dr. Ilies will probably make sure you pass. She is very good at explaining material, and gives reviews and practice questions for each test/quiz. Would take again.
Slow(in a good way), understandable lectures. Answers email very quickly and is VERY nice. I actually switched to her lecture section too.
As a military veteran going back to school, I was beyond lucky to get her as one of my first instructors. One of my favorite attributes was that she genuinely cares about your success. I came into this course 16 years removed from highschool and no college level chemistry. With her help am I guaranteed to pass, potentially with an A!
She is one of the best chemistry professors I have had in my life. She is extra caring and she gives outstanding instructions on solving problems. She also gives explicit explanations of concepts. She is super helpful during her office hours. I always studied using her lecture notes because they were so detailed and well-organized. A true blessing!
Monica is really sweet and she's a pretty good pick for chemistry. Her lectures can be kinda dry sometimes but they are really informative and she post them
The lectures were not mandatory and I missed a few and was still able to do well, but they were definitely helpful when I went and paid attention. She goes at a good pace and answers questions pretty well. She genuinely wants everyone to do well and will help anyone who is willing to receive help.
Dr. Ilies was a good and nice professor. If you didnt take AP Chem in high school, youll have to put in a lot of effort to do well. Lectures are very fast-paced, so going over the slides later and doing practice problems on your own time is more helpful. Tests are a huge part of your grade, so you have to be on your A game for every midterm.
She's a good professor. Her lectures are interactive with questions along the way. This being said, you don't feel forced to participate, especially because it is such a large class. The slideshows are posted online and there are helpful videos about the content as well. She answers many questions and even stays a little after lecture to do so.
Lectures are fast-paced, but she makes them interactive and knows what she is talking about, so she can clearly explain concepts. There are lots of practice questions and review sessions available, so she really helps students get prepared for exams.
If you did not take AP CHEM or focus on Chem in High school, this class will be a time sink. She has an accent so understanding her lectures can be hard at times. Sometimes she would ask the lecture hall questions in order to increase student engagement.
She's a very down to earth and approachable professor. Loved taking her class.
Well if you're in the honors program, you won't have much of a choice for CHEM 101 and 102. With that being said, Professor Illies is a great lecturer and is pretty easily accessible both immediately after class and during her office hours. I'm usually terrible at chemistry, and while its still difficult, she made it much clearer to understand.
An icon upon many, she is so helpful during lecture and office hours, I could see how she lectures a bit fast (if you haven't taken ap chem) however, she is very good at explaining things in office hours/recitations
QUEEN AND ICON!! Had her for Chem 101 and 102 and although her lectures are fast, she truly makes an effort to get to know and help her students. She is extremely approachable and friendly to everyone. If I had the opportunity, I would absolutely take another one of her classes.
The entire chemistry department here is a mess and take the course ridiculously seriously considering the fact that 50% of the class will never have to take a chemistry course past this one. The tests are also ridiculously hard and the average for all of them was around a 70 between all classes.
LOVE Monica, she's amazing as a professor in every way. So funny, kind, and engaging!
Dr.Ilies is not just one of the most well-prepared and BEST professors I know, but she is has the kindest heart. She goes beyond everything to help you and cares if you really understand the concept or not. Her lecture notes are very organized and they explain things in logical details. She i absolutely a gift to the Chemistry Department.
Amazing lectures and helpful professor
Dr. Ilies was a fantastic chemistry professor. I hated the course, but she helped explain a lot of difficult concepts to me and really cares. If you show up to class, participate and ask questions, she can tell and will even call on you by your name. If I ever needed to take another chemistry course, I would 100% take her class.
Solid professor
She is an incredible teacher who really cares about her students. Make a point to go talk to her before or after a class and she will learn your name, which makes everything more personable. The class was very difficult for me, but she did an amazing job explaining and her lectures were very engaging. I would 100% recommend Professor Illes.
Dr Ilies is one of the sweetest professors, and is very caring and understanding of her students, also very approachable to bring up questions!
Great prof!! She is amazing at teaching Chem. I did not do well this quarter (due to myself falling behind) however her teaching methods, notes is amazing! Even if you do not like chem you will after her teaching methods! She will even know your name if you participate. Exams are average so study/ go to office hours. Great prof!
Great prof, well respected. absolute gift to the chem department. knows her material and chem knowledge well. she Wants to see you succeed, but chem 102 material is hard and tough. only con, she assumes you know chem somewhat so you don't learn as much imo
I am a premed student with a chemistry and biology background. Dr. Ilies is by far, one of (if not) the best chemistry professor. Her teaching style is highly interactive and she is open to exploring topics that students want while having clear grading criteria. Real-world applications of material are emphasized in this course.
Very good lecturer and instructor, passionate and available always, only negative is sometimes too serious and could be a harsh grader.
She's a nice professor and has passion for the subject. But the way she grades is ridiculous. She picks and chooses who gets participation points, even if you did participate in the class discussions. She does not take students who fight for their grades seriously either. Try to get on her nice side if you do have her.
Dr. Ilies is hands down the best chemistry professor at Drexel. Her teaching method makes understanding chemistry so much easier, and her classes are truly engaging. While the material was very challenging and demanded a lot of time, it was all worth it in the end. This course was one of my toughest, but Dr. Ilies made it much more manageable.
Dr. Ilies does a good job of teaching chemistry to those who take her class. She makes it very easy to study for prepare and study for exams through review sheets and practice assessments. Very helpful outside of class and in office hours. I would definitely recommend Dr. Ilies for anyone who is going to take Chem 101.
I took her last year so this is all based on impressions. I didn't attend much of the lectures, but every time I did, she always explains things in depth and her slides are pretty straightforward, that I could catch on quickly without having to search on Youtube. 10/10 would retake her classes if I wanted to.
Professor Ilies was outstanding during lecture! Material was covered in a manner that was easy to follow, despite the size of the auditorium. Additionally, she was incredibly helpful with lab material when I had questions. Furthermore, she encouraged everyone to participate and ask/answer questions. I would definitely take a class with her again.
Dr. Illes is a wonderful professor. She teaches very well in class but her lectures are usually with a lot of kids at once. She does also explain stuff very well during office hours so I recommend going to her office hours often if you want to end with a good grade. Chem 101 itself is a very hard class at Drexel so beware of the difficulty.
She's great. Lectures were kinda boring though but that's got more to do with the material itself. CHEM101 isn't very hard especially if you did take some classes in high school. The ATKIV homework is such a pain to get done every week. The platform is horrible and not very practical.
Do not recommend!!! Not accommodating at all and relays false information about the course and when asked about it she doesn't give a clear answer. She does try to explain the best she can in lectures but her accent is strong and sometimes hard to concentrate on the topics.
Never felt like I wasted my time going to lectures. She appreciates it when you engage in lecture (most professors do too.) Provides several resources for studying, especially for exams. Even gave study tips. Responsive to questions and willing to help. Cleared up issues I had w/ turning in recitation work. Highly recommend her!
good lecturer but if you don't study and pay attention, you won't do well on exams
Very good lectures, Caring.
She has amazing lecture. She's very nice, very sweet, and will remember your name forever and ever. "hey was yo name". I love her so much protect her please.
She's nice, I just think she's overhyped/overrated. She is such a sweet woman and is probably the best professor in the chem department. But, compared to my own AP chemistry teacher in high school, she definitely did not compare. Would take again though. She'll always remember your name. Her slides were pretty helpful, and she is very caring.
She has been the best professor I have had since coming to Drexel. Her lectures are very interactive. She was the course coordinator for chem102 and everything was planned out well and you were never lost or won
She is so nice!
Halfway through my first quarter, i broke my leg and couldnt go to lab because of it. I literally had 2 labs in the class left and this woman wouldnt accommodate me for them and used the excuse that the class was not "hybrid" which was absolute bs and suggested I drop the course, and I had to otherwise id fail. This messed up my whole chem sequence
Class was split into halves with Professor Lee Hoffman teaching first half and Ilies teaching the second half. Hoffman was by far the better teacher and easier grader. Don't participate and Ilies has a vendetta against you.
I do not recommend taking Dr.Ilies. She is seeming to be understanding and a thorough professor, until students with accommodations or life issues need to communicate to her. I lost a very close family member and was hoping she would be understanding as it was a tragedy. Rather. she told me I was not participating enough and tanked my lab grades…
Class is hard. She's nice though
Prof Ilies is hands-down the best professor I've had at Drexel. I'm now reflecting back on my freshman year experience, and she truly made me learn to love chemistry. I struggled a lot with AP Chem in high school, but her way of explaining things made everything stress-free. I credit her for her work - had her for 102, and recommend her highly.
Her lectures are great and she is good at explaining concepts in detail.
Prof Ilies is great. Shes great at explaining concepts if you are engaged and you do your part in understanding the material. Participate, and she'll remember your name in a lecture of 200+ people.
Very nice and respectful, always willing to help students. Does have a thick accent which at times can be a little hard to understand, but overall, very good at teaching.
great professor, PARTICIPATE
Monica's lectures are engaging, and she genuinely cares about students. While the material can be tough, using resources like unstuckstudy and the free textbook helped me stay on top of the work. Overall, a solid class.
Cheating in this class is practically impossible. Trust me, I tried everything—Quizlet, ChatGPT, even a friend feeding me answers through AirPods—and still got wrecked. This professor has eyes everywhere, like some kind of academic FBI. Honestly, it's less a class and more a psychological thriller.
Dr. Ilies is such an amazing professor. She teaches the material very well and gives examples that help you understand different concepts. She is very caring and friendly toward the students, too, and she is more than willing to stay after class and help you understand things.
An ineffectual teacher
Shes one of the more tougher chem professors offered for Chem 101. She talks as if you should already know the topics and doesn't go into much detail compared to other professors. Very apathetic towards sudden life events. I'd highly recommend Dr.king instead. He takes a more slower approach to the material and makes it very engaging.
She is a great professor and very passionate in what she is teaching. It is a hard class but she provides lots of resources. Your grade will be dependent on how much you study. She is a great lecturer and is very knowledgable but its on you to do the work outside of class.
Great professor.
