Great personality! Makes learning fun and interesting! Very Qualified!
She is my favorite teacher ever! So funny, very nice, not too hard
No Comments
Funny, sweet, and understanding with great character!
Funny and nice.. Just study for tests from study guide and you're good
Easy A if you do the work and study.
absolutely wonderful professor
very cool
SO UNSEXY!!!! Honestly, worst professor ever, but easy.
She's great, the class is great, it's just GREAT!
she isn't rediculously easy but is so willing to help. she is an awesome teacher and really interested. she wants you to do well! AWESOME TEACHER. I totally recommend her
Nice teacher, interesting stories. Not too easy but makes things fun.
Class isn't super easy, but she makes it really interesting. She covers almost everything that is on the test, but plenty of studying is still needed. Tests are combo of MC and essay. Fun class, fun lady, but be ready to work.
This class is not all that easy. The tests involve a lot of rope memory, but nothing unbearable. Come to class and listen and utilize the study guides and it's ok. Monica has a great sense of humor so prepare to laugh.
She is THE nicest person ever. Incredibly funny, entertaining and helpful. Take her for anything and everything you can. She gived plenty of opportunities to get points and the tests and assignement take work but are really not impossible.
Really nice woman. Class is kinda hard. She's funny and easy to pay attention to. I'd def take this class for Area A. You'll really like it!
I liked her as a person and as a professor, however I did not like the structure of the class. There are only 3 exams and 1 project equally 360 points total for the semester, so blow 1 test and you're screwed. If you like memorizing, its worth it.
So funny and nice...sarcastic sense of humor. HARD TESTS though! Actually made us do a semester research project and 20 hrs. community service or a paper on a psychologist.
dr. reis-bergan is a great prof! she has a great sense of humor and is a very likeable person. her lectures are not as organized as they could be, but i still enjoy her classes. i'd love to take some upper-level courses from her!
dont dig the whole co-teaching thing. shes super unorganized and apple is the antithesis of her... makes for an interesting time studying... i personally wouldn't take her again, but you're probably better off with her than some other 211 profs
The class is rough but it's a prerequisite,so it must be done. Professor Reis Bergan is funny and outgoing and tries to make a somewhat painful class as painless as possible. If you're going to take 211, take it with her or with Dr. Apple
The project is really hard, the tests are semi-easy, but the final project is crazy. Good professor very willing to help.
She taught this class with Dr. Apple and it was GREAT! It's challenging, but not overwhelming. She's always eager to help and has a sarcastic sense of humor, which makes class a lot more fun. I HIGHLY recommend taking this class with her, you won't regret it.
I like Dr Reis-Bergan, she is hilarious. She will definately keep you awake. The only reason that I couldn't do better is because the tests were a little difficult and I didn't have much interest in the subject.
this is my second class with monica, and i love her! she's hilarious, and always makes class interesting. the tests are hit or miss, though; i never quite know what to expect. study hard, and be prepared to do community service (she requires 20 hours) or research. it's a great experience though!
Do not let her kind and humorous personality fool you. There is a lot of information in this course and she makes the tests extremely difficult (which she then takes months to grade). If you enjoy memorizing pointless lists and taking tests that consist of mostly short answer, take this class.
She's an awesome professor. She's hilarious and her clasess are lots of fun. The only downfall is her tests, which are super hard, however; i would definitely take this class with her!
I thought her tests weren't very hard at all, as long as you read the material. I came in to take the first test and had forgotten to study and still made a high B. She is so helpful if you need it and tries her best to make the class entertaining. She's awesome and I definitely recommend her.
Tests are a bit difficult; you really have to know your stuff. Taking professors like her make it worth it, though. She's one of those rare professors that is actually 100% human. Her stories are great; she's hilarious and fun and very real! Definately take her before you leave JMU. She's a gem!
Very fun lady with a good career and a crazy family. Community service hours (20 a semester) are a requirement of the class, unless you want to do research...blah. For tests (which are TOUGH) ALWAYS beg for a study guide, MEMORIZE the lists on the study guide from the book and the notes (like, be able to regurtgitate them), and TAKE HER CLASS!!:)
Addictive Behavior is an AMAZING class. Monica is so much fun and she gets into the material. Don't get me wrong though, you have to work hard, but it is definately worth it. HUGE research paper, but she splits it up to make it easier. Not an easy A at all, but I would highly recommend any of her classes.
Great, hilarious lady with lots of good stories! Hard tests, be careful and study lots for the short answer sections, USE the study guides! 20 hours of community service is a LOT hard to complete than you first expect, so get it done early. Start on your autobiography assignment early too. A lot of work for a 300-level class, but a great prof.
freakin awesome. not too easy, but so nice and down-to-earth. take her take her take her. the only reason why someone wouldn't is to find an easy A in a class that will be less interesting and that will teach you half of this one. take it.
Monica is fun, without a doubt. Sometimes she's a bit too much for 9:30, and I'm not really interested in the material with makes not going very tempting. But she's a very nice professor and very down-to-earth.
Awful. The class has nothing to do with psychology; it's like health 101! She is a worthless professor whose only apparent goal is to waste students' time by assigning stupid amounts of unimportant busy work. You'll sit in lecture and wait for her to give you any actual information, only to have absurdly long tests on stuff she's never talked about
I love this teacher and this class, but it was a lot of work as others have mentioned. She's incredibly down to earth and tells great stories and uses great examples. Two big outside projects/papers but no final. Tests are somewhat difficult but fair, just memorize lists she gives you. I would recommend this class, but it's not extremely easy.
Funny with great stories!Requires a lot of work though, start on the community service and biography EARLY.Study notes hard, especially any lists, and when u think u know it all, study again because there was always something in the m.c. i'd never heard of. short answers are pretty fair though and from the notes.
She's funny in person but she came across quite rude in emails and told our class it counted as a socio-cultural course in psych and it didn't!
I love the teacher and the class wasn't terrible--my only issue was that it is a lot of work as other people say, especially compared to some other psychology classes. You have 3 tests, various "activities" worth 3 pts (which makes you want to come to class), a biography paper, and 20 community service hours..regardless, I recommend it.
I took her for addictive behavior. I really liked the class and she makes it relatively easy for you. Most capstones have one big final paper but she breaks this one up into four papers due throughout the semester. One presentation at the end, various activities and the 4 papers. Always willing to help you so def worth taking as your capstone!
Personality could be really dry but she is hysterical and really personable. You actually will want to go to class with her. the class is not easy. you will actually have to read the book and attend lectures to pass, but it is reasonable considering it's a 300 level class. i HIGHLY recommend
Great professor! So energetic and entertaining. There are so many opportunities to succeed (lots of extra credit). 6 tests including final, get to drop lowest test grade. Community service component, which was a great opportunity and lots of fun. I ended up with over 100 in the class, with a reasonable amount of effort. Highly recommend her!
Monica's class was the first class I've ever had in college that tested a lot on stuff that wasn't really covered in class so I found it a bit difficult at first. She's incredibly helpful and understanding if you go to her office about any issues whatsoever and not bad when you get the hang of things. Still managed to pull an A by the end.
This class was both online and once a week lecture. The book is long and boring and the exams are hard because you have no idea what to expect. We also had to write a long paper, but she is really helpful if you go to her. If you take the time to do the readings and work, you'll do well. Also, don't be scared to ask for help!
When I took PSYC 330, it was a hybrid class. Monica is very nice, and when I asked for help she was willing to answer my questions. However, her tests are almost unnecessarily difficult and sometimes if she states a topic won't be on the exam, she'll put it on the exam regardless. She can also be vague with assignment guidelines.
The assignments are easy, the tests are like 20 essay questions each. Tough grader on the tests and honestly I should have gotten a 94-95 in the class, but she tends to grade fast so you might have to ask her what you got wrong, because she isn't clear. So I got a 93 which is an A -. It was not hard to keep up just read the book.
She made the class very interesting and conducted activities to make the information stick in your brain. Must read the book and take notes during class to do well. Tests were multiple choice and short answer. Be ready to put in time and effort to get an A, but overall great professor.
Monica is such a great professor! I actually looked forwards to going to her class every week because you never knew what crazy thing she would talk about from her own personal experiences. I thought the tests were challenging, mainly the short answer portions, but she gave you as many points as she could.
I had Monica for an online maymester class and she is such a fair grader and cuts you slack. Assignements are not difficult but they are time consuming. Also, her tests are essay form and VERY challenging. Even for online class, make sure you read and understand all chapters. I learned my lesson by not reading all the material before exams
If you just sit down and read, this class is really easy. Everything is based on the textbook (she doesn't actually lecture), but she's there if you need her. She grades really easily, but the assignments/exams can take a while, especially the exams. She is a very nice woman, and I would recommend taking this class if you can!
This class was difficult. The material itself is really easy. It isn't complicated. However, Dr. Reis-Bergan makes tests way more elaborate and burdensome than necessary. She grades the exams pretty easily because the questions are so demanding. The lectures are entertaining and Dr. Reis-Bergan is helpful when you ask, but the class is hard.
She was amazing.
So Monica is a really great person, she's funny & nice, but not a great lecturer. If you think youll pass from just going to lectures and paying attention to them then youre outta luck. The tests dont have anything to do w lecture, so if you have issues learning straight from the book youre gonna struggle. Shes also vague with her expectations
Monica is a great person, but she's not a great professor. Her lectures consist of a couple of slides that are very hard to follow and a bunch of stories that are hardly applicable to the material. She is funny, but her class is difficult simply because none of the test material comes from lecture. You have to read the entire textbook to do well.
She's really funny and nice, but her lectures aren't very interesting and they're hard to apply exactly to the content. It's hard to extrapolate what to know from the content and chapters, so it feels like you have to learn the entire textbook. She's very approachable and the content is interesting, but it's difficult to know what to learn.
Monica's an amazing person, but not the best professor (not the worst either). Her lectures are interesting, but don't cover most of the material. It's really easy to underestimate how much will be on the tests. Make sure to read the chapters thoroughly.
Monica will assign a lot of reading, and make sure to do it, because a huge chunk of the test comes directly from the textbook. Lectures are hilarious, but don't always cover what will be on the exams. She is extremely accessible outside of class, and is always there to answer questions! Just read the book and you'll be fine.
Monica's a great person, and accessible outside of class. It's just that her lectures tend to be too vague in comparison to the tests, and she sometimes gets off topic in class. Be ready to read and reread, make sure you know what's the in book.
I would advise avoiding this class. Vague, vague, vague. Her expectations for group projects are non-existent. Her lectures barely touch on the material you're expected to know for the tests. A very stressful and unpleasant experience. Sweet personality and means well but not worth it.
I found the material to be interesting and her to be a decent professor. The group projects were a little much, but hopefully she will change that in the future. Was not too hard to get a good grade, and she was a nice lady, fun to talk to. But the class, and her teaching it, wasn't anything special
There is so much group work, and your groups don't even stay the same, she changes them. The lectures are really vague and the slides don't give clear information. You leave class and wonder what you did during the hour and 15 minutes you were there because you don't have much to show for it.
Her lectures are vague, BUT the lectures are also not boring which is points in my book. She is a pretty easy grader, but you HAVE to read the textbook in order to do well because just the lecture won't cut it, you'll need to remember lectures too though. I hate the group work but she grades pretty easily on that stuff, not a bug deal.
Dr. Reis-Bergan truly wants you to succeed and encourages you to come to her if you are struggling. The entire class is online (4 weeks) and guided via the textbook, and assignments and exams consist of multiple essays. This class is a fair amount of work, but full of amazing information. PSYC308 is a solid choice for the sociocultural requirement!
Monica was really sweet, you can tell she puts time into her work. It really is just learning form the textbook and then recapping it during the lecture, but she tries to make it interactive and fun. She did a good job of transitioning to online! Lots of reading, but also can probably get by with a B without reading.
I loved taking 330 with Monica! Easy and straightforward adjusted very well to be online. I didn't find lectures to be very helpful as it just went over the reading, however when i didn't understand something it was beneficial attendance is mandatory for participation tests were take home you have a week but dont wait! Assignments also graded easy.
I personally didn't like the material we learned, just didn't find it interesting but this class definitely required effort. She's a strict grader but after a couple of assignments, you got used to it. Exams are not bad, attend office hours if you need clarification! Readings are required for hw. She's so nice and is always willing to help!
Material learned in this course was very interesting but felt like I could've learned more (only had class 1x/week). Assignments each week that are generally easy and usually based off the textbook (100% needed or you will not pass). Exams are take-home and take time but are self-explanatory. Group project took minimal time and was easy.
Monica is AWESOME!! She makes this class so interesting & is hilarious. Attendance is totally optional but a lot of test content is lecture specific - if you want an A on the tests you definitely need to read the textbook but the material is not bad! TAKE HER.
Definitely best professor ever. Extremely understanding and wanting to make sure you pass the course. Introduce yourself during the first week and she will try to remember your name and face. Grade based on 3 exams and a final project paper.
Please do yourself a favor and take a class with Monica. Let's just say, this semester would have been pretty much undoable if I didn't have her, seriously. She's a great professor and knows what she is talking about. She is always available to talk and with help you in anyway that she can, just ask. And she has your best interests in mind always.
Monica is incredibly kind, smart, and helpful! She genuinely wants all of her students to succeed, and it shows. She breaks material down very well and shares stories that help get concepts to stick. I highly recommend her!
She's just wonderful. Always willing to help and answer any questions. You can see that she cares about the topics and it makes it so much easier to learn and understand. 3 exams (multiple choice + short answer Q) and one final paper. The paper seems long when she starts explaining it, but you will enjoy writing it if you give yourself some time!!!
She doesn't upload the powerpoints from lecture and the exams are difficult. She's nice but don't skip classes because the tests won't make any sense even if you read the textbook a million times.
I genuinely really liked her as a person, however, not as a professor entirely. Her slides are very difficult to follow and exams weren't super easy as we all thought it would be. She wants everyone to succeed and is willing to listen to her students. I would take her again but just know it's not the easiest class
I took this as a summer class. I wish I could speak to her teaching skill, but I taught myself everything. No lectures, you just read a chapter every day and do an assignment based on it (which could be very tedious). She is also not accessible, as I emailed her a few times only for her to either not respond at all or respond way too late.
Dr. Bergan was an amazing professor, it was a four week class during the summer so it was a good amount of work. If you needed help, you knew how to contact her, she was easily accessible by cell phone. You have to put in the work to get a good grade. Weekly assignments, quizzes and exams were all short answer/paragraph form, no multiple choice.
Go to class!!! So much of test content came only from the lecture, not just the textbook. Compared to what I'm used to at JMU, her exams are on the difficult side. Study and you'll be fine. Tons of extra credit if you just go to class. If you don't read, you'll fail the exams. Just put in the effort and you'll get a good grade.
Read the textbook & go to class! If you don't, you will fail. Exams are almost all short-answer so complete study guides. Attendance is extra credit, few discussion posts, and three exams. Big paper counts as final but is not hard and very flexible with writing. She is so funny, accommodating, and interesting, really enjoyed attending her lectures.
I took psyc308 over the summer and it was a disaster. The syllabus was ridiculously unclear and we were bombarded with assignments everyday. There was no instruction given. I had to infer I needed to read a chapter in order to do the assignments. the assignments were heavily writing based. The feedback was also unhelpful and unfair.
Very test heavy class, basically only graded off of tests and one final paper, but the tests weren't hard at all. She gives a ton of extra credit as long as you go to class. Grading takes a long time and discussion grades and extra credit won't be graded until the end of the semester. Lectures were engaging and interesting, and I enjoyed the class.
If you can take a class with Monica then do! She is a super caring professor who wants you to do well. I took her for PSYC 210 and although the class was hard, she made it super easy to understand and broke topics down so that everyone in the class understood.
She is also my advisor and she is the best person on the planet. She knows how to help you thrive in her course as long as you talk to her. TAKE THIS CLASS!!
Monica class is the reason I love math again. She somehow made math fun and easy. If you need to take PSYCH 210 class, I HIGHLY recommend taking her class. Her teaching style is amazing. She presents everything STEP BY STEP and does not skip around problems. She doesn't make any question feel like a stupid question LITERALLY!
Monica is honestly one of the funniest professors out there. I think there were times in which she got distracted from course material but other than that, she is a great teacher. She will be there for you during this course and for anything you need. She even helped me with an assignment for a completely unrelated class. She cares a lot about us!
Honestly you can skip the whole year if you actually understood math 220. Such easy classes and it was not hard to grasp. A few projects and exams but they were also pretty easy. I only went to like 1/3 classes and ended with an A.
I LOVED HER... one of my favorite psych professors. She really cares and wants everyone in her class to do well whether its her class or another. She explains the material clearly and is available at all times. I definitely want to take her class again, she's a great professor.
Take Monica if you need to take PSYC 210, she is amazing and after math220, i was less confident about statistics, but after taking her class she has allowed me to understand it so much better, she does a lot of hands-on, repetitive practice in class so you will have many opportunities to practice the material, gives extra credit often!!!!
After MATH220 I hated stats, but after taking Monica's class I love it. She's my favorite psych professor so far and teaches the material in a very organized, clear way with lots of examples and practice. She is always energetic and peppy and I'm going to miss her next semester-- take her!!!
Monica has been such a lovely professor. Even though I'm not a huge fan of math, and still didn't do great in the class, there wasn't a day when I was dreading her class. She offers lots of extra credit and is so easy to talk with when you have an issue.
provides lots of extra credit, no midterm, final is 'cumulative' but its mostly just on new material, participate in class and study and you will succeed, you really shouldnt struggle in this class because there are tutors and its a welcoming environment to ask questions
Professor Monica is amazing! She is one of the most caring professors I've had, and truly wants the best for all of her students. I found the class to be very straightforward - I definitely recommend doing the practice exams she provides!
Amazing professor. Cared about her students and wanted them to do well. Attendance not mandatory but gave extra credit often for attending. 1 weekly homework assignment, 3 projects, and 4 exams. Overall made a difficult class more than bearable.
