LOVE HER, Easy class, easy course. super helpful :)
Great prof, friendly, easy-going.
Fun course (no textbook), prof is helpful. However, she expects you to attend every class. The lecture schedule was basically useless. Takes ages to get marks back to students.
Easy course, sorta interesting. She expects you to be at every class and will call you out if you try to leave early. Lectures are kind of long. PowerPoints could be better especially cause there's no textbook. She was nice though for the most part. Tests were easy if you studied. In class assignments were an easy 1515. Better than most upper libs
Easiest liberal I've taken. Had three in-class 'assignments' for which you received the marks just for being there (each worth 5% + she told you when the assignments were easiest 15% everrrr) one test (more like a quiz) and final - harder than I expected, but my fault because I expected it to be veryyyy easy oh and watched movies in class too!
She definitely writes the reviews herself. She never answers her emails and doesn't care about students. She doesn't mark the written assignments herself, rather the TA does. The TA though... marks so hard, ugh. Be prepared to get marks back a month later.
Forensic Science is a great elective and Monica does her best to teach the course. Although it is a chemistry course, minimal science is needed to take the course. In order to do well, you will have to read the material and it's recommended that you attend ALL the lectures.
a nice prof and the powerpoints are helpful for studying, but handed in the final essay three weeks ago and still haven't received my mark back yet. Bought the textbook but didn't use it at all. Sometimes she just read off the powerpoint and many students sleep in class. This course also requires large amount of memorization.
3 classes where attendance participation counts worth 5% each easy 15%. However, the tests & written assignments .. you have to study in detail and the TA marks quite hard. Not to mention you will get your assignmenttest marks back a month later.. The TA isn't really reliable either -.- Don't bother buying the textbook - won't use it AT ALL!!!
She is super nice and wants everyone to do well. If you show up to class and read the powerpoints you will do well on her tests (more like quizzes). No textbook!
Forensic science was a breeze, she said she's never gonna use the textbook so don't buy it, you can read off the powerpoints and pass, listen once in a while, she uses some stuff she says on tests. Don't need a background in science to do well
- In class case studies matter, but they are pretty easy. - You watch episodes of Forensic Files in class - dont buy the textbook - Midterms / Exams: thorough but nothing surprising so as long as you know the material you will be fine - She's very nice, easy to talk to - Almost no homework assigned, only one big essay due at the end of term
Great prof, always willing to help. Lectures run the full class time almost every class and can sometimes be packed with too much info to take in all at once. Fair marker and clear about expectations on assignments and tests. lots of opportunities for extra marks and helpful info as long as you attend class.

The class was okay, tests were particularly easy. BUT she lacks empathy. If you wish to request anything from her, be prepared to be turned down.
If you like lots of in-class participations (presentations and discussions), then go for it. This course is big in genetics (GMO, trans animal and stuff). Plus, our class had never met the TA but she defended the TA for marking us hard. I mean, you taught us how to think critically but you were not the paper marker then you shouldn't say anything.
Dr. Sauer is a very good professor. All the bad comments are from people who do not study. She does not trick you whatsoever. However, to do well you need to memorize her entire lectures as she will test every detail. Easy A+ if you study her lectures. She is willing to help you by appointment.
Forensics Science is a interesting course if you are intrigued by TV shows Bones, Dexter, and The Forensics Files. The professor doesn't quite measure up to the excitement of the material. It is expected you attend every lecture, as there are weekly assignments. No phones or talking, or you will be called out on it.
Forensic Science is easy and if you read the slides, you will pass. She gives assignments every week and gives chances to make up if you miss one. HOWEVER, that's all that's good about this class. She plays favourites (!!), she gives very unclear instructions, she calls you out for texting/talking, she's disorganized, boring and condescending.
Be prepared for her to turn down all requests. She has no sympathy, and uses poor excuses to make your life harder. It's clear she's scientifically literate. But that's about it. Be prepared for her to add sneaky things on the exam she curveballed for if you miss lectures. She does this all the time. Not exactly the best understanding.
Forensic Science was like every other liberal course that you study by studying last minute... her lectures are boring but mandatory because you need to go to get the weekly assignment instructions or the assignment itself. Overall very very boring course. She's also a harsh marker on the essay. Only perks were no textbook and easy tests.
Lectures are pretty straight forward and attending class matters. Monica provides good explanations on her slides and content. On a side note, she grades her homework very difficultly(had to get a full 2%).
She goes through her slides pretty quickly but she posts them all online. Lots of small homework tasks, generally really fun and entertaining class where you can often catch yourself watching an episode of some forensics tv show
Monica is a great professor, she is very knowledgeable and makes dry topics interesting to study. There is no textbook for the course, and you get to watch some pretty cool movies/shows. You're also graded on a large variety of things rather than just two tests and a final.
Pretty easy marker. although the science aspects are hard to grasp for non-science majors, she marks accordingly. Lectures are lots of fun - Watch lots of clips.
Monica is pretty nice. I like how she has the no-phone rule cuz the class itself is so small, people tend to distract those who wanna learn a lot. We watch a lot of Forensic Files and her slides are extremely informative. Listen and you'll do well with all the mini assignments, you have to go to class in case she hands out a small assignment though
This woman taught this course during summer school and made it even more difficult than when it was taught during the year. Her tests were very specific and had a ton of content. Her tests were longer than the tests during the year. She added an extra lecture with 65 slides with content that didn't need to be taught and was tested on in the final.
All the materials presented in lecture were very interesting and the prof is knowledgeable. She gave a lot of bonus marks too which was very nice. Her multiple choice questions on her tests were a little tricky but definitely doable if you study.
Great professor, very kind and gave the class a very enjoyable atmosphere. Weekly assignments take less than an hour and accumulate 15% of your grade that is very easy to complete. The first half of the course was very entertaining and interactive while the second half was a difficult and heavy in content. Essay marked easily and all tests mc.

Her powerpoints are so disorganized, and she posts multiple versions of the same powerpoint, and when you tell her to fix it, she doesn't. Clear example of a prof whose ego has gone to her head, and thinks students are below her. Avoid her at all costs, take somebody else, you won't learn anything.
Very very challenging professor!! She is extremely strict (no cell phones, no talking, no coming late). In a class of 300+ students usually the professors don't care about this stuff. No lecture slides, only diagrams and the diagrams are not in order. Disorganized, no course outline, random pop quizzes during class.
Would not recommend at all! She goes through extremely heavy content way too fast and does not slow down if you need her to. Her midterms are based off random things that are not on her power points and I don't find her organized. She does not care about how the students do and only cares about finishing her long power points before class ends.
Bad teaching style, she talks extremely fast so bring a recorder with you. It is impossible to keep up with her, she talks as if you already know the content and went through 65 ppt slides in 2 hours. I do not recommend taking this class with her however she does give bonus marks during each chapter quiz which helps many students
She's an okay prof, but with that said, not everyone with PHDs should be professors. She's extremely passionate about the material and I think she sometimes forgets that she's teaching undergrads. She wants her students to succeed but they also have to put in the effort themselves. She talks really fast so always have a recording device.
Went from an A in 311 to a C in her class, I say shes one of the worst profs because the material on the ppts are only good for a portion of the material thats needed to be understood. If you want to do well just read the textbook.
Contrary to the folks below I thought she was good. Yes, the course is hard, and you have to apply strong study techniques, but she also does very favourable weighting of assessments so you get the best mark possible (+ bonus quizzes). She does talk very fast however, and if she has 10 content heavy slides left and 1 minute, she'll still finish.

Talks very fast to the point where you cannot type or write down the information. The midterm and exam were fair but there is a lot of information to know. She makes you work for your grade in this course. Gives 10 online quizzes but barely any time for them.
Not a good teacher, not good with technology, ie does not accept assignments online, you give it to her or you fail
Her tests are ridiculously hard and her lectures hardly help. She expects everybody to be an expert right off the bat. Very condescending. Get ready to study not only the textbook but even go as far as seek out other resources just to get a decent grade.
The most disrespectful professor I have ever seen in my life. Mark based on preference. She only believes what she knows is the truth, what articles and peer reviews said is not considered. If you have bad English skills, you will not succeed in her class (she emphasizes grammar).
I did not enjoy having her as my prof, she chooses favourites, and can be very condescending. I was excited for this class because of the content but Dr. Sauer made it unenjoyable. Make sure you go to class because there were often assignments that you could only do in class! There was an essay, many small assignments, midterm and final.
Although I dropped this more than half way through the course. It has had nothing to do with the professor's teaching styles, themselves as a person, nor the way they mark. This professor is amazing! If you can write an essay with no grammar errors, or spelling mistakes it's an easy A. There's bonus marks, and her lectures inspires you to engage.
This is a biology class and you get what you sign up for. There are lots of quizzes and assignments but they are very straight forward. Dr Sauer is extremely flexible and understanding if you show up to class, participate, stay on top of things and just send an email if you need help or an extension on anything.
She's tough. But she also motivated me to pursuit education. As enthusiastic as an infomercial. She will help you if you want help. Wonderful human.

She's so sweet and I'm thankful I took her course. This is definitely an easy course ESPECIALLY if you've taken high school bio. Even if you haven't its so easy to get an A. Her lectures are detailed but very easy and she adds in examples and extra details to make it easy. I enjoyed to content so much and you should do it if you get the chance!
I dont know what it is exactly, but this prof gives off a bad vibe. Did not like her nor enjoyed the class. Easy class, but do not recommend.
Quizzes very hard. 1q alone can be 4-5 lines, 3 lines per choice, 4-5 choices. you will only have one minute per question! so in one minute, you have to read15 lines, think, and choose. Considering the fact that this is a genomics course SO terminology is very complicated. I am a 4.0 student with a 1.47 GPA here!
This professor makes lectures unbearable, terrible personality and very uncomfortable to be around. Will treat you like you are in high school again. None of the course evaluation instructions are clear. Quizzes have unnecessary time requirements like 1 question per minute or more. Do yourself a favour and avoid any course with her at all costs.
All of this professors assessment focus on how to apply the information that you learn in her courses. This can be super difficult for students that are memorization focused. Her tests are very fair as you have options for which questions you answer on the test (ie . Pick 2 out of 4). I have throughly enjoyed the course!
She is clear regarding her expectations and will get mad and rude if you breach them. Good but strict prof taught me a lot but you need to be responsible and engage with the material as she will dump huge info each class. In-class assignments are also important to boos your mark.
I really enjoyed Prof. Sauer's class. She ahs a great sense of humour and is very down to earth. The content is easy to understand and explained very well. Overall great prof, would take any class she offers again.
Monica delivered fun and attractive lectures everyweek. There was no textbook needed, and her slides were organized, easy to understand. In class assignment were interactive, could be considered as easy marks. She gave very clear rubrics and examples for the essay and graded fairly. Midterms and finals are MC. Will definitely take her class again.
Avoid at all costs. Not only did the professor rush through all of the lectures, but they were so content-heavy that it was impossible to take good notes while she talked. Her assignments weren't horrible, but they felt like something you would do in high school. She gave out pop quizzes with only 5-15 minutes to finish each one. Bad experience.
Not everyone should be a professor and she proves that.
Not a hard class, but very unprofessional. *works on question for 30 mins* - she announces question is wrong, gives us correct # *works and solves it in 10 mins* - she announces original question was right, told to redo it after erasing answers. Offered us 5 minutes extra for the test tho! The rest of the exam was very fair, but she is too chaotic.
All her exams were only short answer questions. She picks on people for answering questions and this class only had 7 people. Attendance is not mandatory but apparently there was an in class activity which she did not post about, email us about, or was in the course outline. She also grades very hard and her lectures are content heavy.
Monica is not professional at her job at all. Her teaching style is really bad and she rambles on and on in class which makes it hard to follow. During midterms, she won't let you ask questions just because "she doesn't wanna walk in between the seats", which was not fair or professional at all. She is by far the worst professor I've had at TMU.
Monica loves to belittle her students and she has a major attitude problem. I'm surprised she managed to get married at her big old age with that sassy attitude.

Genuinely good lectures and interesting anecdotes, if somewhat information dense. Sort of old-fashioned, but nuanced in a way I haven't gotten from any other class. Only real complaint is the name of the course - it's basically just selected topics in biology with a movie/TV presentation thrown into the middle.
Incedibly rude and unprofessional. Will belittle you. Behaves like a high school teacher. Has a certain quota of slides she wants done (which is valid) but starts speeding up and muttering if she doesn't finish in time. She can't teach honestly. We had 2 midterms, 10 quizzes and a final. Be ready to teach yourself with next to no good resources.
She can be very mean and rude to her students sometimes. Really wants people to come to class. She's actually not a bad teacher though, she just talks really fast. The course was organized really well, so a lot of students succeeded.
Taken in F23 and we had 2 term tests (15% each), final and quizzes (50%). I agree with other reviews here that the prof is unprofessional in terms of behaviour with students and answering questions about tests in class. She often gets upset if you'd ask if the supplementary material she'd add to the already 50+ slides is testable.
She can be condescending sometimes, which is annoying for a content heavy course. She really wants students to come to her class and gatekeeps review session materials. So make sure you go to her lectures before the day of test/final. Other than that, an okay teacher who could be kinder to students
This prof is rude and condescending idk why but she doesn't like to tell you what's on the midterm or the final and always ends up switching her mind or being petty and adds stuff on the final that she specifically says wasn't going to be on it. like the lecture component itself is not bad but she literally refuses to give clear instructions so GL.
This professor is condescending/rude to her students. She contradicts herself when stating what material will be on midterms/finals then gets upset with students for being confused or asking for clarification. Her marking is fair and she's good at teaching but you need to attend all the lectures because she has additional notes in her slides.

sure monica was a sassy little lady but tbh she was one of the best this sem. her tests were reasonable and she didn't test you on anything she didn't cover. didnt want you to memorize, but rather understand the concepts she emphasized. gave bonus marks, moved quiz dates when we had conflicts, and gave 2 extra quizzes to boost ur grade.
She is a great lecturer.The course was structured very well. The 5 quizzes were worth 50% and almost everyone got perfect on the quizzes, which made life easy. The midterms and final exams were short answers, so you need to know the content. The only issue was that she gets irritated and angry easily, if students ask same questions repetitively.

Monica is really strict about phones. Her quizzes are really easy and the most of the midterm and final questions were questions from the quizzes. However, she marked super hard on the essay we had.
Taken this class because i thought it would be a fun experience, turns out its completely not. This class was literally harder than my required courses... She gives all homework in person so you have to come to class to get those assignment marks, shes bad with technology so you have to hand in all homework in person, and the final was insanelyhar
If you do have the option, taking her through an online class would be much better. She is a tough grader, but if you do the work, you can get a good grade in her class. Considering this was the only class I was taking, she was not horrible, but I understand where the other reviewers came from. Try to avoid this class if in person!!!!

The lectures aren't too bad although I think she speaks a little fast but my god, she is mean. She also has very little patience so be careful when asking questions because she gets annoyed easily. You can do well if you study slides and really understand the general big-picture concepts of the course.

She thinks she got us all figured out, calls us lazy and is very mean. This is a 3rd yr course, and she keeps making it seem like we dont deserve to be in her class. It is very disheartening as a woman in stem because instead of encouraging us, she insults us. WRONGFULLY TOO!

The prof is straight memorization and 0 application, completely unsure of how this is considered teaching when the lectures are spent copying down slides and the test is have you memorized this ? Doesnt provide any sample problems because its "hard enough to make questions for the test" basically to lazy to do so and wants to reuse previous test
she's one of the worst professors in the school, at today's midterm she yelled at a bunch of students including me for asking for help during the exam, when there was like 40-30 ins left she decided to ONLY help specific people that she liked, she even rejected helping a person that didn't understand English. Hope she gets fired
She is totally a b. Very mean and rude, probably the most rude person I have ever met at TMU.Yells at the students during class and everything, such a show. I dont think any student deserves to learn from a person like her. BTW not hating on the prof because of getting bad grades or sth I actually got an A by independent studying. Good luck!
I was taking a photo of the lecture slides to get some missed content, and she totally flipped out and yelled at me to come up to the front of the 200-person lecture and delete the photo in front of her. She is so rude and tries to win over students by giving them candy if they answer a question, avoid this prof at all costs.
If you want to enjoy learning avoid this professor. She has no sympathy for sutdents especially in the case of make up exams, they are much harder so if you are unable to attend exams goodluck. No information on final exam was provided. Memorzie slides because she does not have the capacity to create any unique quesitons involving application.

Zero compassion for students and takes zero accountability for anything. She'd spend hours in lecture yelling, basically doing anything except the job she is paid to do.
She is a good prof. she will test you badly. She only cares about the students who did great in class or very close to her. She will always validate her work with graphs saying this is the class average. Even though it doesn't justify everything. The way she does the question paper is totally different from what she teaches in class. Be prepared.

Everyone else's reviews are true but I attended every class and didn't find her to be THAT bad. Found her final annoying but everything else was good. The lectures and final was just memorizing/ed info instead of learning the process which I didn't love. Good luck if you take this class
Graded by 2 midterms, 7 quizzes and 1 cumulative final. She is a decent at teaching, but extremely lacking in compassion. Midterms were fair, final was a bit more difficult but doable; drops hints in lectures about tested content - take them! She can be rude at times and very condescending. Honestly, just go to lectures, get your notes and leave.
This woman hates her job as a professor clearly. She has a very nasty attitude and does not care about anybody but herself. She lacks accountability. Every exam was long answer format, but with sufficient studying they weren't bad. I hope she reads this and does some reflection. Not everybody in her class is a fraud and she needs to be more kind.
A lot of ppl are hating on her but she's honestly not bad. Theres 2 midterms and a final (all are short answers). The midterms and the final are FAIR. Go to class and make notes because whatever is on her slides and the info she says to explain things is on the midterms/final. Ppl are just haters. TRUST ME she's not that bad. She's not that mean.
Just so people know, Sauer sometimes gets/asks students she knows more personally to write her 5 star reviews, so take more positive reviews with a grain of salt. Yes, what was said about her assessments being reasonable and her lectures being resourceful is true - that's not the issue, as that doesn't absolve her of her pessimism for students.
Also I feel it's important to mention that people's sentiments about her are not unfounded. She acts the same way during office hours.

The class itself is fine. Quizzes are basically free marks. The tests are fully short answer but they aren't cumulative and are graded with leniency. Slides have blanks so you need to attend lectures to fill them out but you only need slides for the tests. As for the prof herself, she can be condescending when answering qs and it is unnecessary
took this class 2 years ago & she gave me anxiety lol. reminiscing. I feel bad giving a bad review but I need to spread the word. She was very strange and unaccommodating when it came to absences. You had to attend class to receive the TAKE HOME assignment, otherwise, you just get a zero... like wtf? lol. queen wanted us to fail I swear
BMS 858! I seriously don't know how she got hired and why she still teaches here. She clearly doesn't know what she's doing at all. Seriously, can't teach without going off on tangents, isn't familiar with the course content, shows clear favouritism (students happen to be the same colour as her). Overall, yikes! Stick to mol bio Monica :)

This is the worst prof I've ever had in my life,she has no clear rubrics for anything.She will teach one thing and then your exam will be completely different.I actually wanted to die everyday before reaching her class. Please for your own sanity DO NOT take her class.Everyone in my class had to get their work remarked bc she's mentally slow.

I used to hate her, but now that I've had 3 classes with her, she isn't that bad. Sure, she's annoying and sometimes rude, but she cares and wants her students to do well if they put in the effort. Her tests are very easy and a nice break from hardcore studying. Pay attention, answer questions, and if she gets to know you, you'll enjoy her class.
Her tests are fair but she's an incredibly boring lecturer and so unnecessarily rude to her students. Last year, an exam invigilator asked me “why is she so mean to you guys” while I was being escorted to the bathroom. Clearly, everyone sees her attitude.

Be prepared to lose your mind. Never thought a core elective would put me through this much stress. She's rude and condescending and don't even think about asking a question without getting a judgemental reply. All midterms and finals are SHORT ANSWER NO MC.
She is a pretty rude and passive aggressive person. I would never take courses with her if I had the chance, but unfortunately I was stuck with this prof for this course as its a requirement. Do not take take courses with Monica unless you have no choice to.
this is an easy course but the lectures are very boring. monica gives me mixed feelings. sometimes she'll say nice things and make herself seem approachable but she has slip ups where she'll say the meanest things and makes me think she might have anger issues. apparently she was upset with the TAs bcs they gave out good marks for the assignments.
This professor made a simple core elective very difficult. All of the examinations were long-answer format with no option for multiple choice. This would be okay in other courses, but the content was very heavy. I don't recommend this prof if she's teaching the course.
Not the most kindest nor compassionate person but overall a doable course- generally fair exams and marking. Course was challenging since Monica covers SO much information and her slides/information are not coherent so studying can be frustrating.. wouldn't recommend but definitely not the worst experience
Not the best experience. Monica made it a very difficult and stressful class. Tests covered absolutely every single slide.Would not recommend taking this course if she's teaching it. Save yourself from unnecessary stress.
