Speaks too softly
By far the worst math teacher i've had. Simply horrible. its seems like she doesnt know what she is teaching. doesnt explain thing very well, her voice makes me want to go sleep. very boring class!
I took calculus in high school but had to take 21A again. If I had not taken calculus previously it would have been very hard to understand her lectures. She explains concepts in the most roundabout, complicated way. Her tests are OK. Homework is not bad.
Contrary to popular belief I think she's good. However, I am a math person so to non-math people I don't recommend her. If you like non-monotonous, semi-fast paced math, then take her. If not take someone at your own pace.

Is not one to get students "excited" about math, but this does not mean she is a bad teacher. After presenting new theorems, she proceeds to apply them to an endless number of examples. Quizes & practice midterms are tricky, but midterms are MUC
Class sometimes seems more like an english class but examples are helpful. GO TO OFFICE HOURS! boring sometimes, but helpful when you ask for help.
Very nice person, very excited about math. When she teaches she lets you glimpse into the philosophy behind the math, so you are not lost in abstraction. I'd take her again, any day!!
Very bad teacher. She has no idea what she is teaching and continually studders through lecture. Gives many proofs (which may or may not be good). She's very vague about what she expects. Discussion section is pointless.
The worst teacher I have ever had. Does not know how to teach and the class is really boring overall. She wears the same clothes for days and never puts makeup on and never brushes her hair. It is really distracting at times. Dont recommend her at all.
...not that great, hw is the only way to prepare for her tests. OH, sample test, and lectures are kind of useless...
She explains things well in class and homework is not too terribly difficult. If you have problems on the hw go to her office hours and not the TA....he didnt help much.
150A was not that terrible as i heard from other students. I thought she did a great job of getting review material out of the way so we can focus more on more important subjects of the class. Also her finals and midterms were fair although i wasn't too excited about it. HOWEVER, for 150B, one word: Nightmare!

Vazirani may not be much in terms of a lecturer but man are her tests easy! the final was identical to the practice one, thats right identical, and it took about 20 min to finish awesome!!! This is probably because she preped us so well with, Ms. Vaz is definitely a great professor.
Extremely boring lecturer! Her tests are kind of hard!! If you have a choice on her or another professor take the other professor!
She sucks bigtime, avoid her. Can you say Booooooooooooooringggggg!!!!

Prety much the worst professor Ive had since I got here. Her lecutres arent clear at all. I got the impression she really didnt know how to do the stuff she was lecturing on and just copied her notes. She also gives lame quizes in section and uses that stupid online mymathlab thing for hw. If you have a lame TA your going to have your work cut out.
I always found her lectures painful. She writes big and slow and ugly, and she's made quite a few mistakes that we students always have to correct her on. I hated (with a passion), mymathlab. It was the most anal program I have ever used. Not for me personally.

hella boring, confusing, and vague lectures that really dont help at all- hardly anyone shows up. hopefully your ta is good. tests arent that hard. mymathlab is a terrible program. highly unrecommended. stupid weekly quizzes in discussion so u have to go.

Course Compass (MyMathlab) sucks and will NOT teach you anything nor prepare you for the weekly quizes, which means you need to do aditional studying. Her lectures were generally ok, but sometimes I found myself confused and relying on the book. She IS friendly though, and helpful in her office hours. Overall she's so-so.
Confusing lectures; however, easy tests. Hella easy tests, directly from her examples.
I found myself disliking her more and more every day, and questioning why i tortured myself by even going to class. She's nice enough, but I found her very annoying, and she always seems to screw something up when copying her notes to the board. Not recommended.
I'm not sure what other people are complaining about, but she was an awesome teacher. I liked her teaching style and her midterms and finals were straight forward and easy. Those who are complaining, obviously, didn't study hard enough or just crammed. Just do the homework and look over her lecture notes. She actually made me love doing integrals.
Horrible teacher. Goes way into depth and while you'll think that's a good thing, it's a horrible thing. She easily loses students during her lecture and OFTEN makes mistakes. Even though she seems like a nice person, I hated the fact that my math grade depended on her teaching ability. Avoid her.
Her class is alright, however she does insist on writing on the board which can get confusing because she often runs out of space and will erase previous parts of the problem. Tests sort of hard, but if you do all the homework they won't be too bad. Makes mistakes while writing on the board because she copies from notes.
Midterms were alright but the final was hella hard for some reason! She doesn't put up solutions for practice exams, only the answers so consequently you must ask people for help or go to Calculus room. Doesn't respond to emails very good and often makes errors during lecture. Insists on using the whole hour of lecture time.
This class will be a breeze if you took AP Calc in high school. It's basically a repeat of that material.

Impossible to pass if you haven't taken AP Calc in high school! NOT recommended!!!
Well, I have to give her credit for trying. I think she really does try to be helpful and she always advertises her office hours, but her teaching was incredibly confusing. If you've taken calculus before, the class will be easy. But I definitely wouldn't recommend her to anyone who didn't take calculus in high school; you'll be completely lost.
hard to understand anything if you havent taken calculus in highschool. she confuses a lot of people. the problems shown in class seem easy but it is totally different from the ones on the midterm. those are extremely more difficult. only take this class as a LAST OPTION
she is a fair prof, open to student suggestions,& realizes that the subject is difficult. her lectures are not hard to follow, but i didn't find it nor her notes any more helpful than reading the book since she follows the book verbatim. HW can be easy or challenging, quizzes are fair, but exams are alot more difficult than HW/Quizzes.
She is an awful teacher! Several times she would even change the original problems during lecture so that she could solve them. Oh and don’t try to do that on the mid term, trust me. I already took Calc, and got a 4, but the lectures made me more confused about the topic! If you get her drop the class. if not just study your notes from high school.
Not a terrible teacher. The midterms and final are very easy, lectures not too important
I think she was great. I didn't take Calc in high school and managed to get an A- in the course. Lectures are very straight forward and you knew exactly what was coming on tests. My one complaint is how annoying it is using Mymathlab for most the homework.
Clear and concise. Gives many examples. Tests are straightforward. Must go to section to do quizzes and turn in homework.
First of all i took AP Calc and got a 5 and averaged around 98% for the whole year. HOWEVER Monica Vazirani just confused the XXXX out of me i never got what she's talking about her examples were bad i ended up not going to lectures cause it is just making things worst however I still got an A for this class though. One word to describe her USELESS
Best math professor EVER! She's the first math professor I've had at Davis who CARES if you understand the material or not. She gives GREAT examples and explains concepts clearly and consisely! HIGHLY recommended!
The lectures are boring and she goes over simplistic topics that have already been covered in a AP Calc class. Discussions are pointless because the TA just went over advanced concepts to explain topics which confused everyone in the room. Exams are nothing like what she gives you in homework though. Everything is a lot harder on the exams.
I DID NOT LIKE THIS CLASS AT ALL. Her lectures are boring and confusing. If you like tons of examples and unnecessarily defined definitions, then take her. My TA sucked, he complicated everything with high mathematics. Tests, homework and quizzes. Good luck if you get her
Gives helpful examples, but spends too much time explaining easy concepts. Is very clear and seems like she actually cares about the subject and students. Quizzes are easy, midterms are a little tricky but it is possible to get an A if you go over the homework and the practice exams.
I had always excelled in math in high school, but didn't take AP Calc. However, this class was ridiculous. Vazirani over-complicates the simplest of equations and explanations. Still, I could complete the homework, but then the exams were NOTHING like the homework OR practice exams. AVOID VAZIRANI! (unless you did well in AP Calc).
Professor is really annoying during lecture but teaches the material well. The curve is not very generous, so don't expect an easy A. Midterms and final is difficult but definitely manageable if you do and understand the homework.
Had her in Fall 2007. Tests were harder than expected, and her teaching style and notes were really confusing. Needs to keep things neater. Furthermore, MyMathLab was completely useless. On the bright side, my barefooted TA Patrick Dragon freaking rocked, despite the mandatory weekly discussion quiz. Try another teacher.
She is very clear and organized. Although her tests have a few tricks to them, as long as you practice a bit, they aren't too bad.
Her notes gave simple examples like basic derivatives and then slammed you on the exams with much harder problems. Like teaching a kid to add by showing him 3+3 is 6 and then giving him a test with a problem like 458 + 842. Graduated high school with a 3.9 and got a D in this class. TAKE ANOTHER PROFESSOR, or be prepared to read ur textbook alot
Excellent professor. Highly recommended. She specializes in Algebra, so do take her for Math 150A. Midterm was easier than the final. She speaks clearly and is willing to take the time to help students. Knowing Linear Algebra is helpful but not necessary to do well in this class. She has crazy hair!
Doesnt teaches well. Always make mistake and gets corrected by students. She tried to teach something without proper knowledge of it. Also makes thing more complicated than it really is and only to confuse herself and then gets corrected by student. Happens every lecture.
Complicated method of teaching. Webwork is awful, covering things not in lecture and most of the book. Lots of self learning involved. Made midterm too long, did nothing about it. Midterms also cover material not in lecture OR webwork. Try taking another prof, my friend gets a page of notes on midterms and easier questions for the SAME class!
Alright, I'm not the brightest person, I'll give you that. But I'm willing to work hard and I worked my butt off for this class and failed. I tried to get help and she was completely useless for that. She talked to me like I was stupid. She made our first midterm too long and just said "Oops, that was a little too long." Not fond at all.
this was a very hard class compared to other 21b teachers. she is quite condescending toward students and makes it seem like you're dumb if you don't instantly understand her teaching. try another prof
I liked how she broke down the problems so that you could see them step by step, which made all the difference. She modified her exams and asked feedback from the students and I thought that was pretty cool, too. There is a moderate curve on her tests and she always made herself available during her office hours.
She is very confusing in lecture, and easily gets lost when she does not have her notes. Her midterms are nothing like the practice midterms she gives you. Tests have very complicated, difficult questions that are nothing like the ones in the book. If possible, take another teacher!
She is just terrible, I joined the class 3 days before a midterm and she would not allow me to take it at a later time, or re-take after I failed it. During lectures she just scribbles her notes on the board, frequently not clarifying topics. Also for all her tests she encourages memorizing everything you have learned for a test, not how to derive.
She explains topics in ways that are sometimes hard to understand. The first midterm was overall considerably too long for given time period and very much unlike the practice exam. Overall the other midterm and final were not too bad. This is not her best math subject, but I've heard she is much better with upper division algebra.
Her lectures are pretty much useless - just do the odd numbers at the end of each chapter, check your answers at the back and carry on. You'll do fine.
The way she lectures is just not helpful. She skips some steps making it harder to understand and the web work is terrible. Her examples in class don't really relate to the exams very well. I would have preferred another teacher.
She is a useless teacher, pick any other teacher rather than her. I literally wanted to kill myself in every class. The homework was unlike the tests and it was way to difficult to gain any real knowledge. Concepts that should be easy were made hard by her teaching.
She is a terrible teacher. Does not explain anything. The homework is hard, super difficult was hard to gain any real knowledge, and is not related to the tests. The concepts that are easy are made harder to understand, and the hard ones are made even more unclear. Avoid at all costs.
Terrible teacher. Spends tons of time in class doing either pointless things or just goes off and doesn't explain anything. Has a completely unreasonable amount of (graded) online homework, none of which appears on the midterm or the quizzes. Oh yeah, and there's multiple quizzes. Just an overall awful class.
There are only approximately 15 people can get A on each midterm and final.
Terrible class, tons of homework that is nothing like that tests/midterms, and the lecture is nothing like the quizzes and is just boring/confusing.
This professor gave me an intense headache. I had to teach myself almost everything in the entire class because her teaching was so terrible. She also grades extrememly hard on tests and doesn't even curve correctly (puts average at a C-). Went into material a full chapter and a half more than other classes. Avoid her!
Not a great math professor. Her lectures are helpful since she does give lots of examples. Yet, were very hard and the midterm turned out to be much harder than the finals themeselves. If you can, get another math teacher.
The class in of itself is a difficult one. I suggest enrolling in tutoring immediately and then dropping it if you don't need it. She is not a very good teacher. Her tests commonly include the most difficult version of a problem. I would suggest a different teacher. The homework is monotonous, pointless and graded.
Just bad. Lectures are often useless. However go to lectures right before midterms/the final because she gives away some major hints as to what problems will be on the big tests. Gives a lot of webwork homework which can be a drag, but with collaboration, should be a grade boost. Hard to get an A in this class, even a B is challenging.
I thought her lectures were pretty helpful. She does a lot of problems and is open to any questions. However her homework is torture. I wasted so many hours doing her homework each week. Working really hard I got a B.
Very good class. Monica really knows her representation theory and how to explain it. The class is challenging and there's a lot of homework, but all of it is relevant and gives you a chance to learn a lot. For the undergrads complaining on here, sounds like most of you aren't used to the workload that a good college math class should have.
If you can get another professor, do so. Lectures are okay and webwork is rather easy, but her tests are incredibly hard and make the textbook look like a walk in the park in comparison. I took Calc AB in high school and passed with a 5 on the AP test and she still confuses me.
Her tests are not as hard as people claim in this page. She is enthusiastic about maths and teaches concepts well. Getting an A is not hard if you undertood questions in the Webwork(which is an online homework site that she gives homeworks ranging from 10 questions to 30 question once or twice every week).
Avoid Vazirani. She makes many mistakes during lecture that slows class down to a crawl. Her Webwork assignments were insane, expecting students to complete two homework sets each week (some had 20+ questions!). Her first midterm caught everyone off guard, her second not so much but the final was ridiculous. Save yourself the trouble and avoid.
She seemed to rush through class getting her notes onto the board, lots of proofs but not many examples. Tests were OK, overall an average professor.
Prof. V is a great professor. I really found her lectures engaging and helpful for all her webwork problems. Her tests weren't very hard. Yes, you have to study, but her practice tests and problems she assigns for homework truly reflect the difficulty of the exams. I would love to have her again.
How is Monica anything above a 1? She was the vein of my existence during winter quarter. I dreaded going to her lectures every MWF. She made the math more confusing then it had to be, and she also enjoyed showing us proofs (not part of the curriculum) My advice is to avoid her and not take her class. She has been by far my worst teacher at UCD
She seems enthusiastic about math and lectures reflect pretty well what's going to be on exam. However she is not a good lecturer whatsoever. Speaks quietly and writes small and light so impossible to see if you're not in the front. Doesn't seem to be an order to anything- will start one section then go to another then go back again. Very confusing
Her lectures were all over the place and hard to understand. I found that her "practice tests" did not reflect her tests well. Her office hours were helpful, but she only offered them once a week and that was not nearly enough time for everyone to have their questions answered. She does not curve test scores, but she does curve the final grade.
One of the worst classes I have ever taken. She is a poor lecturer who goes of on tangents not related to the class (economics specifically). These applications she spoke of were never on the exams. The class average was a D+C-. There were people above the average who still got a C-. Her curve is not enough for how hard her exams were.
She is terribly scatter brained. Her exams are too difficult given the level of instruction she presents. Even attending all the lectures, you'll still have a hard time performing at average on her exams.
DO NOT take her classes if you have another choice!!! Her webwork HW is really hard, and she barely talk about how to do that in the lecture. Her practice exams are way to ease comparing to her actual midterms. In addition, she didn't give review sessions for her midterms. She still keep talking even there is only 3 mins left. Midterms are tough!!!
Her lecture is so long and so disorganised. Her practice exam is totally different from her actual exam. Her midterms and homework are too difficult. Even if you attend all lectures, you will still get low grades.
If you want to take MAT21B and she is the only professor has seats, PLEASE DO NOT TAKE!!! even WAITING FOR ANOTHER QUATER is a better choice!!! If you have already taken her class, DROP IT NOW or good luck to your GPA. :)
Class is unnecessarily difficult. Take Morris or Mossessian if available. She often puts the most insanely difficult questions on her webwork and tests. And only 5 attempts to do some very difficult homework questions. But hw and quizzes only make up a combined 10% of the class, so its still all or nothing on her tests... which average like 60%
Failed this class, went to every lecture and was still lost. She was very unorganized and made many mistakes when doing practice problems.
Hands-down the worst math professor I've ever had. She's smart and means well but is very scatter-brained - lectures long, fast and confusing. Assigns a LOT of webwork, and it's only worth 5% of your grade so expect to do a lot of work for not a lot of payoff. Practice tests don't reflect what's actually on her midterms. Unbelievably abysmal class.
She is very scattered in her teaching, gives homework so difficult on specific topics she hasn't covered in class, and her practice midterms are nothing like the tests at all. She is an awful teacher, and I regret taking her, especially since i now have to retake the class because of how difficult she made a class that I usually love.
The actual class was hard and she lectures WAY too fast. But she is a fair grader. Don't use Rotman. It stinks.
Explains proof, but not expected to know for exams. Explanations are clear, but sometimes arduous. Provides adequate and clear examples. Although HW problems on webwork are long and are not a significant part of the grade, they are a lot of help. 3 quizzes spaced throughout the quarter.
Most stressful class ever. The examples she does in class are usually easy to follow and understand, if she isn't going too fast or making mistakes. However, there is homework for almost every lecture and some problems are unnecessarily long. Her tests are hard and she only slightly curves your final grade, so you never really know where you stand.
Her lecture is clear. Everything is good. However, She did not curve the grade.
Vazirani might just be new to this specific course, but she doesn't quite seem to have it together. Even when the class average was about 78%, she was reluctant to curve anything. She's a hard grader and also seems somewhat unorganized, as it is the next quarter and I still haven't received my grade for the final exam.
The type of professor to assign a lot of homework and only grade the hard problems.
One of the most scatterbrained and impossible to follow teachers I've ever had. The concepts in 16b were easy for me to pick up when I took AP Calc in high school, but she somehow manages to drag even the simplest concept into a jumbled mess and waste our time in the process.
This is the worst class I have ever taken. The exam is really difficult, and there are toooo many trick, if you are not super super good at math, I believe that you cannot even finish the exam!!!!!!!! The grade system is really terrible!!!!
Poor lecturer. Almost feels like a tutor instead of a teacher... but worse. Hard to read notes for lectures because she writes on a calk board and writes super small and very unorganized. It's very hard to grasps concepts because she doesnt explain thing thoroughly. Just a frustrating experience if it's your first time taking the course.
Professor Vazirani is a really nice lady, but a really bad teacher. She tries to solve math problems in different ways, making this kind of confusing. Her handwriting is really hard to read. Also, she talks about economics A LOT for no reason. Her tests are really hard and are nothing like the homework.
Extremely disorganized, and assumes you know things that aren't explicitly obvious. Knows the basics of the subject that she's teaching, but asking her for any explanation that's more difficult than 2+2 will usually result in some mumbling, or an unrelated tangent. Would not recommend if you don't already have prior experience w/ at least calc a/b
Prof V managed to make every topic in this class harder than it needed to be. Put a strange and almost unfair emphasis on real world applications of the material when many of the students could hardly understand the basic concepts themselves. I studied so hard for the exams, did every hw, and still did not do well in the class. 10/10 wouldn't rec.
I took calc in high school, and I thought I would've been prepared for this class at first, but then it got intense. The lectures are very hard to pay attention to, because she makes it complicated than what it seems to be. I find it quite disturbing how she would take off her shoes in the middle of class, while we are all trying to learn.
I regret taking this class with Professor Vazirani. She made the material difficult, but I believed if I put in the work and increase hours of studying that I would obtain a good grade. Turns out she has proven me wrong. Exams were arduous and had a poor scoring guide, this is coming from a student who has taken calculus prior attending Davis.
I consider myself as someone who looks at the positives in every teacher, but it is hard to do that with this one. Lectures, homework, practice exams, and most other materials will not prepare you for her exams. The exams are unnecessarily brutal. I asked students in higher level maths to do problems from her exams and they couldnt.
She was an ok professor. She gets distracted sometimes while writing notes and makes some minor mistakes every once in a while which happens with most teachers. She gets you ready for the tests if you go to class and the final requires some extra studying if you want to do well. There is a lot of homework but most have video solutions.
She's a nice person and it's clear she cares about her students, but unfortunately her lectures aren't organized or understandable at all. I was skeptical about all these bad reviews at first but I think they hold true to her teaching abilities. Again, I can't emphasize enough how good of a person she is, but I can't recommend her as a professor.
tests Are WAY harder than the book and the homework. Questions seemed like trick questions because she added things that were a surprise on tests. No matter how hard I studied I did bad on all exams. I am generally a very good math student and have done well. I regret taking this teacher because I saw the bad reviews and still took her class.
if you don't want to go to SJA or get an "F" , don't take her classes.
haven't taken my final yet but she is absolutely terrible, so stay tuned
confusing lectures. writes on chalk board, isn't legible. lot of detail quickly. doesn't always say what shes solving for or explain concepts. for tests, deducts heavily for small things. you can get 50/100 for switching up a sign then -70 for having all work but not writing final answer, not concept oriented, need to self teach. a lil mean
Exams are fair, as long as you do the homework and know what you are doing (meaning understand the concepts behind each step) the exams will be a breeze. Sometimes the exam instruction can be a little confusing though, but I guess this is her first time teaching this course so it should be fixed for later classes. Approachable and nice!
Wow! Dont take her classes unless you want to fail.
I honestly regret taking this class with Professor Vazirani. I don't know how Davis employs people like her. I received my only B- in this course when I had a good understanding of Calculus. I took AP calculus as well and passed the AP exam. I did better in MAT16C. This class is really useless, I learned nothing and would've much rather taken 21B.
(Taken online bc covid)MAT150A is in general a hard class, and I think overall she did a good job teaching the material. She is also seems to genuinely care about students' learning. However, as a senior this is the class with the most homework I've had maybe period. It was honestly unnecessary. 11 webworks, 10 written hws, over 30 quizzes, 3 exam
This professor is very enthusiastic about her subject. But she is probably one of the least empathetic professors during the pandemic. She makes everything about the class more difficult than it needs to be. Seems to operate on punishment rather than reward. Pray that you at least get a good TA/grader. She's probably okay during non-pandemic times.
She is too enthusiastic about her students. She is a good lecturer but the most problematic professor in the Maths Department. Give at least three quizzes per week with two different kinds of homework. Few curves for A and B. She said she will let you pass easily but she will not give many A's and B's
She is a good lecturer, and explains things very well. Additionally the class SEEMS easy. However, be warned. She is the toughest grader I've ever had. On a test, I wrote the correct answer, and I had most of the required work to arrive at that answer correct (I did one small part in my head). I received a 0 on that problem, and went from a A to D
she's nice, but her quizzes and exams aren't like her lectures. she lectures about certain topics making some things seem important, than tests you on things she makes seem trivial, unimportant, and barely is touched on. her quizzes are absolutely horrible bc they can be vague and you can create reasons for answers and then they'll still be wrong.
She gives you huge exam problems on topics that she barely went over in class/HW. There's a short quiz every other day that only hurts grades. Her lectures are very disorganized with messy handwriting. I stopped going to lectures because they left me more confused than before. So many people in the class relied on the TA to teach us during OH.
Horrible teacher. Extremely rude and does not know how to teach properly. Avoid if you can.
Vazirani is by far the worst math professor I have ever had. Her lectures are all over the place and illegible. She was behind all quarter but still tested us on material she barely taught. She doesn't give any partial credit when grading and makes problems worth 100 points each so if you miss 1 then your already at a B- on exams. Avoid at all cost
She makes the class seem really easy, but beware she is a very tough grader. A few small mistakes can kill your grade. She didn't curve. She gives post lecture quizzes that mostly hurt peoples grades. Her lectures were a bit all over the place. Gave a lot of homework, there ended up being like 5 assignments in the last week.
Tough grader on exams. Really need a solid understanding of the material to do well. Not the best at time management, as the class ended up feeling rushed at the end as we ended up behind. Lecture quizzes go beyond just asking if you watched the lecture; they are tough and really test your understanding. This class was deceptively hard for me.
I always felt rushed in class, so I was mastering concepts slowly. The midterms and finals were okay, but one slight mistake would give you no points (so no partially credit most of the time). Problems worth 100-200 points, so beware. She holds good office hours, so thats is what you can take advantage of.
The worst professor I've ever had. Terrible teacher with unreadable notes and disorganized lectures. The exams are super tricky with harsh grading. On top of that, she's unsympathetic and does not seem to care about students. Didn't curve, need to self-teach. I like math but she made me hate this class. Seriously avoid at all costs!!!
Lectures are hard to follow, notes are disorganized.
probably the worst math professor ive had in my time at davis. lecture notes are all over the place (just theorems after theorems thrown at you; some with proofs, some not [i.e when prof. feels like proving it]). In a class w/ such heavy arithmetic--> no partial credit for mistakes. LOL. DO NOT TAKE if possible-- your GPA will thank you.
offers no partial credit, heavy weighted tests. Is definitely more concerned with getting through enormous amounts of material ("Oh! we've got 3 minutes left, let me start talking about something completely different").
this professor is the most infuriating ive come across in the math department. she is nice, but she goes through lectures (covering complex topics) incredibly quickly, almost as if shes more concerned with just getting through material than actual teaching. tends to jump around lectures, forgets topics, a professor that needs to be asked questions
I will rate her as 5 stars with some caviats: Cons: -no curve -only 1 midterm -if you mess up (one arithmetic mistake) on that one midterm it impacts your grade quite a bit Pros: -biggest pro: puts a lot of effort into her lectures -notes pre written with good use of color coding and explains things clearly -prompt responses, clear annoucements
There are quizzes due before every lecture that have a heavy weightage. Couldn't understand a single concept after the first midterm. The professor uploaded the solutions to the practice final less than 24 hours before the final exam. And the class isn't curved.
We have quizzes due before EVERY lecture on this website that boils down concepts to a point where you cant really use it to study for exams. 2 exams. The average of our final was a 59% and she still did not curve. She's so bad at lecturing around week 9 only like 10% of ppl showed up to class. Terrible grading, no partial. literally DONT TAKE HER.
Honestly the worst lecturer I’ve had, I took notes on her lecture notes instead of listening to her and learned much much better. Also, very few exams with very heavy weighting, little to no partial credit, and tons of true/false questions. The only good thing about her was that homework wasn’t difficult, but there were tons of hw quizzes.
You will have to teach yourself. You will be in for a quarters worth of unreadable lectures and quizzes on topic yet to be taught. She had one last f*** you to the whole class. She didn't curve the 59% avg final and didn't curve the class. She put trick questions on the test and refused regrade requests. Awful professor, would never take again.
The hw is really easy on this duolingo like website, graded on completion. She has quizzes before every lecture which is annoying but they’re pretty easy. The midterm was definitely on the easier side and the average was pretty high. The final was harder and the average was 60. No curve. There definitely is partial credit tho. Is annoying with T/F
If you can't avoid this professor, then I suggest self studying for this class. If you do go to lectures download her notes if you can and fill in whatever she adds during lecture. Do the T/F textbook problems she suggests to prep for that portion of midterm/final. Material gets more complicated after the first few weeks so be ready for that.
The content of the course honestly isn't too difficult, but you're gonna have to put in extra work beyond her lectures to fully understand it. Make sure to do lots of practice, the optional textbook assignments, and the Mathmatize homework. Tests can be brutal because she doesn't offer a lot of partial credit, but the questions are fair.
The content of the course is not very difficult, but her lectures are disorganized, notes are illegible, and she rushes through concepts. By far toughest grader I've seen, especially for math since she offers basically no partial credit and does not curve the class.
just leave
Class was very disorganized. She constantly introduced and went over entire new concepts very quickly during the last 5 minutes of class.
Sucks
she doesn't care about students who haven't taken mat 21c before at all. the whole class is disorganized and nobody knows what she's writing on the blackboard. too much homework and none of them really help me learn something.
the whole class is disorganized. the grading policy is constantly changing. RUN
avoid this professor at all costs. hostile classroom environment- she ridicules students for asking questions and will not answer them if you ask about anything. illegible notes scribbled on chalkboard, most disorganized lectures i've ever been to. does not curve or give partial credit. only 1 midterm and then the final. do the textbook problems!
unorganized lecture that's very unhelpful, learned majority of the things from mathmatize (HW website)
Super underrated. Lectures are somewhat scatter-brained and the last 10 minutes are never important, but she does a good job of answering questions in class. She also uses mathmatize which is a lot easier to learn from than webwork. Just don't fall behind on your mathmatize stars
the practice exam is written BY HANDS and I CANNOT read any letter she wrote. RUN
disorganized lecturer. nothing in gradebook besides midterm (worth 550 points) and final (worth 1080 points). NO PARTIAL CREDIT!!! run as fast as you can DO NOT take her class. her lecture notes are unreadable and I didn't learn anything valuable in class. had to teach myself everything. puts trick questions on final. doesn't answer questions.
Vazirani is not that bad. I found her lectures helpful as she often shows how to use shortcuts to solve problems and helps build intuition. The mathmatize HW and lessons are super helpful and give you unlimited HW attempts all due at the end of the quarter. Tests are fair. Material can be dense, but build your intuition and it'll speed things up.
learn everything from Mathmatize
Lectures move fast but are fine overall. Uses mathmatize for HW, which is easier than webwork & a good way to learn/study for exams. Only one midterm, all exams were fair. Class content becomes way more difficult/conceptual after the first midterm tho. Don't fall behind, else things will get very confusing very quickly
Changed the final grade last second down 4%. This is odd for me since she mentioned that it was due to that grades were adding up to 108% instead of 100%. I would think that having taught previous courses they would already have grade percentages add up correctly from the start, instead of giving students a false grading criteria in the syllabus
Terrible teaching and unorganized lecture notes. Make trick questions on final to trick students. And change grading policy at the end of course to screw everyone up. Definitely NO.
This professor didn't curve even when the average was a 40. This is blasphemous and I can't believe she isn't fired.
Run and don't look back
Chicken scratch writing m. Ego as high as klay Thompson.
Oh my god. She left the whole class in shambles by giving a final that had so many conceptual questions. Half of it wasn't even taught or in the book. I don't understand how she expects us to know all this information off the top of our heads. Truly the worst professor I've ever had, and I've had a lot. RUN as far away as you can.
She has a passion for Math, but it is an extremely hard class. She doesn't post lecture notes, so you have to take notes to class. Difficult midterm and final. Class Average score is less than 50%. The median is less than the mean.
There is a clear passion and excitement for algebra, and the material is not very hard if you study. The lectures can be a bit disorganized, but not fatally so. The grading for this class was overkill and the curve is nonexistent. Be prepared to take initiative in this class; she wants those who go to lectures and office hours to pass her class.
Passionate about teaching, happy to help in office hours. No lecture notes. However, exams were difficult and allows no notes, so prepare to memorize definitions and theorems, which I feel like isn't the point of upper division math. Curve was pretty much non-existent, the median on the final was 45% and she barely curved the class it looks like.
RUN. You would rather take this class another quarter with another professor than to be stuck here, I promise you. She is not respectful to students when they ask questions and it is so hard to follow along during lecture. She writes small and all over the place that if you aren't following along for 5 seconds, you'll be lost. DO NOT take her.
Really bad lecture. No ppt and she just wrote on blackboard. We cannot see her notes clearly and she had no curve!!!! Even though the average grade of mid 1 is 40. Two midterms and 1 finals occupied 88% of your grade!
Bad lecturer, no ppt and she wrote on blackboard. We cannot see her notes clearly. No curve even our mid 1's average grade is 40! 3 exams occupied 90% of your grade! Don't choose her if you are SUB
Test does not match complexity level of textbook and in class material.
Never had a professor like her. She writes all over the place and also hard to read. Homework will not help your grade as it is only worth 4% meaning midterms and the finals will make up your grade. There are NO CURVES. The online midterm practice doesn't reflect the test since it's not written by her and are generated questions from the website.
run and don't look back.
This professor is the worst, she can't teach at all and all her midterms are extremely difficult, the average student is currently failing right now. She doesn't curve either when half the class is doing bad and is the absolute worst. DO NOT TAKE HER, she has a bad rating for a reason. Trust me you wont regret not taking her.
Is she a human?
not only is she just as bad a lecturer as any other math professor at uc davis, but on top of it she is a mean person. tests are graded harshly, threatens to take off more points if you submit a regarde request, no curve and nothing in canvas until the end of quarter so you won't know your grade until the very end which is unnecessary stress.
Many students said she's a bad professor but that's completely bias. I think she's really good professor. Some topics are hard but as long as you take good notes and review after class, it will be fine. Most importantly, not many homeworks, and super super easy and short midterms. Most people can finish in less than half hour.
Honestly not that bad. She explained concepts pretty well and tried to make sure everyone understood. The homework was sometimes tedious but it helped me understand the material a lot better. Exams weren't curved but she prepared well. I don't think she fully understands how to work the gradebook because some of the percentages aren't adding up.
Prof V isnt that bad. Read the textbook section before class (on the syllabus) and youll be fine. Go to office hours for homework questions. Exams were pretty easy, but be prepared for TRICK QUESTIONS. ex on the final: "use the method of Lagrange multipliers to find all points." and there was only 1 point.
hard hard hard!run run run! bi lei!bi lei!bi lei!
yikes......
The TA provides much better lectures on discussions. Not really curving. "Yes, I'll shift most bins about 2% compared to the official UCD gradescale (and the bins in the D/F range even a bit more). Students-- please do not email me asking for even more shifting. I won't read nor respond to such requests."
DO NOT TAKE THIS PROFESSOR, IF YOU HAVE A CHOICE RUN FOR THE HILLS. Her lectures are all over the place and it's difficult to follow along, tests were worth basically 90% of the class, and homework was 4% so nothing to help ur grade. She doesn't curve despite an average grade on exams to near 50% and the exams are more complex than her teachings.
tests are worth 85%. super boring and slow lectures, but they are recorded. she assigned 29 homeworks that are worth a combined 8% of your grade... her only saving grace is that she doesn't make tests super complicated, and you can do them if you have a basic grasp of the concepts. still avoid tho
Vazirani is by far the worst professor I have taken. Her exams make up ~90% of the grade and missing one question can tank your grade. She doesn't offer practice exams or any information on what the exams will focus on. She has a Piazza board for students to ask questions in which she is rude and snarky to her students. You do not want to take her.
Really hard at the begging because of how unorganized and barely taught material. Kind of had to learn on my own the first midterm. Material got easier so it wasnt too bad later. Exams are not easy (usually) but not impossible. Study the textbook and homework well and you'll do good
This prof is by far the worst I've ever had. She's extremely rude and your entire grade is based off a few exams, so if you do bad on one exam you're basically screwed. She grades harshly and doesn't curve when the whole class gets 50s. She failed me by 1 point bc she changed the grading scale last minute on canvas. Trust me stay away dont take her
Her lectures sometimes were disorganized, w random arithmetic errors, making things confusing. But she also did hw problems in lecture which was helpful. The average ended up being ~C/C+, with exams making up 83% of the grade. Final was not cumulative, and one hw/lecture.
Vazirani's the worst professor I've had at Davis.
Lectures aren't very helpful and basically pointless, because she is so bad at explaining things. Tests were a majority of the grade at 83%, although the final is like a midterm. I learned everything from the TAs and the hw. The tests are almost the same as the practice tests, so if you slam them you'll pass.
I'm mostly salty that I was 0.15% away from a C-, and she wouldn't let me pass. I attended every lecture and discussion so it wasn't like I wasn't trying. Her lectures were disorganized, and she would make arithmetic errors that we would correct her on. She writes small and sloppy, and CANNOT draw graphs well. Office hours were good though.
Probably the most disorganized, confusing lecturer I have encountered at Davis. She seems like a very kind person, and is very helpful if you ask her a direct question outside of lecture. No curve on anything in the class. Tests are graded very hard with a lot of points deducted for "inadequate work shown."
The professor is a terrible lecturer and very disorganized when teaching. The tests are not accurate representations of what we learn in class or do for homework. We had two quizzes in discussion that are announced before hand. I barely passed this class. Never taking this professor again.
Hardest class I've ever taken, she goes so fast in lecture and doesn't answer questions super clearly. If you focus on reading the textbook her tests are very based on that so that would be most helpful.
