She can seem somewhat cold and inaccessable at first, but you have to give her a chance to warm up. She gets a little silly and has a great sense of humor. Chemistry is not an easy subject to teach, and I think that she does a really great job. And don't worry, you WILL get used to her accent.
I found her to be extremely helpful. Chemistry is a hard enough subject to teach and she has a lot of enthusiasm about the subject. She has a wonderful sense of humor and her accent is great! It is hard to understand her at frist but you do get used to it.
I feel really blessed to have her... She has a slight accent, but it's not a problem at all. If anything it makes her more endearing. She's is extremely fair, patient, and thoughtful. I would suggest anyone who isn't proficient in Chem to take her.
From the begging her accent seems to get you and you will not wanna listen. But after awhile you dont notice. Always wants to help and loves what she does. Gets excited over anything to with chemistry.
A good professor, but sometimes a but fussy.
Her class is excellent, as long as you do all the homwork. She is very fair, and if you put a good amount of work in you wlll ge the grade you want. Also, she is very helpful in the lab, which is a plus when it comes to chemistry. I would recommend her over the Orchard Lake chem teachers, even if it means you have to drive farther.
Beautiful polish lady with a hot accent. Makes evil chemistry not so bad. She wants you to do well and she really cares. Not only does she teach well but teaches you how to do well in chem. Would recommend her to everybody who needs chem and wants a good grade.
She places emphasis on memorising formulas you will never use again, which is useless for the 99% of students that will never be professional chemists. It should be enough to be able to recognise and use them.
chemistry is not something that has ever been hard for me; however, her class was HORRIBLE. She isn't clear on material, and I find that the way she gives notes is ridiculous. Save yourself the money...take someone else.
Teacher is too intense about this subject. She does not grade fair. Her accent is horrid. Do yourself a favor and skip is loser. Not worth it. Her exams are unfair. Her labs are unorganized and often changed while the lab is going on. Pre-labs are not explained and are expected to be completed w/o learining the material first.SKIP THIS CLASS
Dr. Chodan is very passionated about chemistry. Its a hard class. Chemistry is like learning a whole new language. If you studying, read the chapter before class, and do the assignments; you can pass.
If you like a challegne and a teacher who teaches well. This chem class is for you. Chodan gives very detailed instructions and lectures. The tests are based on equations. Once you learn the material the class is an easy A with lots of extra credit opportunities. I would definitely recommend her for any chem courses.
Mrs. Chodan is very helpful. If you do bad on a test, she will help you understand everything you did wrong. I liked her a lot and she's really nice to talk to about anything! You must STUDY if you want to get a good grade though. Lots of extra credit.. Do it!!!
she's a nice person but not too great of a teacher. the class isn't organized very well and her tests are near impossible.
Keep it simple : DONT WASTE YOU TIME. She is an ABSOLUTELY TERRIBLE teacher!
She is an excellent teacher. If you are lost, get help right away from a tutor. She gives extra credit for homework and computer lab and that helps. Study the notes for the tests.
HORRIBLE TEACHER! You may as well just teach yourself because there is no help here. She's hard to understand, unorganized and very anal about all assignments handed in. She yells. Will ask if you have any ? but will then yell that she just discussed that. Doesn't care how people are doing in her class. Bright side is she has a really cute clothes.
THis class was tough because of the subject. This professor made it seem fairly easy. SHe is tough on tests, but if you study the notes she gives you and do all the extra credit you will do great.
please students if you want to take CHM, keep it simple, go with another teacher. she is very nice person, but when it comes to the class she is not. she doesnot know how to treat students as students. i worked really hard not to get an A- it is hard to keep track of her notes and labs. please consider all bad comments about herlabs and everything
I like her a lot, I don't think the class is hard at all and she does answer questions and help people when they need it. The labs are short and easy, usually just worksheets.
A lot of math. Not very organized compared to other instructors I've had. I ended up with an A but I definitely worked hard for it. Harder than I thought it would be for an entry level Chem. class.
DON'T NOT TAKE CHM WITH HER PLS PLS PLS PLS PLS PLS
I disagree with most of the other comments. I think chemistry is a difficult subject and Chodan did a great job of keeping it simple-even hands out prewritten notes for you that you can study exclusively from. I used the book only to do the extra credit that she offered.
Instructor was super organized. HW was optional/extra credit but necessary to do well. Do the hw, review class notes (which she prints and hands out), read the text, and you'll have an A. Lots of extra credit offered. It's an easy A, but you have to do the work. I enjoyed this class and the instructor.
Just follow lecture notes and you're good
AVOID THIS TEACHER AT ALL COSTS!! She is absolutely horrible, the exams are ridiculous, and she is not willing to help at all. If you want to pass Chem, take another professor.
organized, she knows how to teach, sometimes cold and moody , you need to study but is possible to get very good grade
Please take any other instructor but her. She is heard to hear (polish accent),she passes out handouts to help but we spend more time in class correcting them. Then after the exam she wants the handouts back,so you have nothing to study by.The only time available to help is her office hours which is an hour before class, when everybody wants her.
Professor Chodan wont make time to help anyone! A lot of trick questions on test and quizes. I study all the time just to get a C!!! Very little extra credit, more work then it is worth! If you spell something wrong then it is WRONG! Don't take her unless you want to work your butt off and not get an A! I don't know why she even has an OK rating?!?
Chodan is an excellent instructor. She is tough but fair. You have to study to do well. Do the extra credit -- not only do you get points but it helps you understand. Tests are straight out of her notes.I would take her again in a minute.
Well this teacher is not fair what so ever! I worked my but off in that class, never missed a lab or the lecture. Did all of the extra credit from the textbook and participation points. I needed a C to transfer to my other school and I had a C- one percent away from a C and i asked her if there was anything else i could do and she said NO!
Awful class and awful teacher! DON'T take Chemistry her! take it with any other teacher!!
Each exam has lecture packet (full of errors), she takes it back after exam, and leaves you with nothing to study. Hard to understand her accent. Element names are already hard for some to get the hang of, but add her accent and you cant tell which one she's saying. If shes not in a good mood, dont even bother asking her a question. Teach yourself.
Monika is very hard to understand. She does nothing but read off the packets she gives us. Going to her lectures are mandatory but no help at all. Stay away from her if possible. If you take her, make sure you teach yourself from the book.
I hated chemistry with a passion before her class - mostly because I had a bad teacher. Monika works for my learning style. I'm getting an A in her class just by following her handouts. Lots of extra credit to help you out. If you're failing, you're not working outside of class and putting in the time.
If your not good at chemistry don't take her. The majority of the text is comprehension, and if you don't understand it on your own she will just confuse you more. If you spend 4 hrs a week, and do the extra credit you'll do A-B. Don't waste time memorizing definitions (like kids in my class). The last exam sucks so make sure you keep up.
She'll go over anything as many times as you need til you understand it. She's great to work with. Her tests aren't that hard if ya study & do your H.W. you'll pass. Going to the ASC is very helpful. I recommend Joe Klavitter & Rich Johns for tutoring. overall she's AWESOME! B4 I hated Chem. Now I LOVE IT! - Stephanie Miller
Very good professor in my opinion. She explains the material in a way you can understand, but it is fast. She is very approachable, but will not hold your hand through this course (she stresses over and over the use of a tutor)...not a class for an easy A. There are quizzes every week, but she offers lots of extra credit & practice exams.
Monika is honestly a brilliant person. She knows so much about Chemistry! The only drawback is something how she teaches things but overall i cant complain about the class.
Extremely hard to understand. If you don't have an excellent grasp on General Chemistry 1, don't bother. Put questions on a quiz that we haven't learned and insisted that she taught it when the whole class didn't understand. Final test was memorizing an entire packet which we were given no guidance on what to study, just to memorize 60 pages
I'm sure shed be fine if you could understand her. She gives you a handout then reads it word for word. no help at all. Horrible.
Can't understand her accent. She gives you a 30 page handout and reads it word for word. She hands back your tests goes over them then collects them again so don't expect those to help you study. Horrible teacher.
How is this woman allowed to teach? Always says "I'm here to help my students" but in all honesty refuses to help. Do not take this class with this instructor! User beware!
HORRRRIBLE. stay away from this teacher. she is impossible to understand and she is no help what so ever. we started out with 40 kids in the class and only 9 stayed. she is the worst chemistry teacher ever, hands down.
This professor does NOT cover enough material in lecture, so you HAVE TO spend a lot of time with a tutor and the book. I had to drop class based on difficulty and I'm working on my second Bachlors degree! I strongly suggest taling this class with a different professor.
I'm working on my second B.S. and this is the worst teacher I have ever had. She expects you to know what she knows. Just say no to taking her class. I had to drop.
Chodan is extremely helpful to her students. She lets people know excatly what's going to be on the test and and is very fair with grading. Just don't annoy her and you'll be fine.
Do not be mistaken by many of the negative comments. Professor Chodan is comical and helpful and the PACKETS should be studied as well as the book. Compared to other professors she is quite simple and fair.
Prof. Chodan is an extremely great teacher. Chemistry is a hard subject as it is and she really knows what she's doing. Her packets are your bible. Know those and you with get an A. It's a lot of hard but she is always there to help. She's very fair and very understanding. Many extra credit opportunities and the SI is a life saver.
I took thi prof for chem 1000 &1510. I think she is a great teacher! I've never taken a chem class in my life and she made me want to go even further. She hands out a packet, knw that and you have an A! The hm in the book is just extra and honestly f you know the packet, when you read the book you understand almost everything.
I am actually totally blown away by all the negative comments. Looking back, now that I have moved onto a University, I WISH I had Monika as a teacher. A lot of people are complaining, but that's because they have never had a really terrible teacher before. She's the best Chemistry teacher I have ever had.
Really helpful, good sense of humor. I really enjoyed this class.
Have taken her 3x for chemistry and haven't passed. Class is very hard and she isn't much help once you get behind or are confused
Very hard. Was not helpful even during office hours She acts as though Chemistry is very easy. She made it more difficult than what it already is. I am an A student and had to drop this class. PLZDON'T TAKE HER.
Im an A student, yet had to get out of this class after the 1st exam. After reading all the negative comments and seeing a few positive made me giver her a chance. DONT GIVE HER A CHANCE! Terrible educator. The only hope is she will be let go at some point to preventing harming individuals learning experience. OCC needs better CHE professors!!!
I signed up for this account just to specifically rate this monster. She's terrible at explaining, she has a temper, she's supppperr serious about all rules, no excuses for anything, (anyone enrolled in her class be aware that her exams are DIRECTLY from her note packets!) DO NOT TAKE!!!!!!!!
Monika is a great teacher.I took chem 1000, 1510, and 1520 with her. She demands professionalism from her students and I never worked as hard before in school, EVER. Saw tutors every week. As in ALL classes. If you don't want/can't or know how to study or work hard then find someone easy and fool yourself into thinking you've learned something.
Not a good professor, hands out a packet and reads it word for word. Refused to help students with questions she deemed "irrelevant." Doesn't explain how to do lab calculations well or sometimes not at all. Find someone else to teach you chemistry.
I took chem 1000 and 1510 and actually wanted to take 1520 with this professor. If you know her packets, you know her test! Book work is extra credit which is a huge plus because textbooks are confusing. Chem is hard and shes not giving any free passes. Show up and pay attention and you wont have to be on here with any neg comments!!
I didn't really apply myself to this class, hence my C. If you go to every single lecture, lab, and pay attention, you'll do fine. Nicest teacher I've ever had; very clear, very organized, and is always willing to help. Tons of chances for extra credit; the people that are complaining... I'm shocked. I recommend her to everyone. Best teacher.
You really have to take control of your own learning with this class. Prof Chodan has taught at larger, more difficult universities before coming to a community college, but I assume that the level of difficulty has remained the same. Textbooks are a must. Use your resources. Youtube topics you don't understand. Chem is really easy, but its work
My advice to anyone taking chemistry is to study the books as thoroughly as possible and use class time as review. It sounds crazy, but this class covers massive amounds of information per lecture. Once you get a packet for the next exam, memorize it. Have some background knowledge of the material, and then ask questions in class if you're confused
I love Monika!!! She is a great professor! She explains everything thoroughly and she is ALWAYS willing to help. If you have a problem with her, it's on YOU!!!!! Quote me 'Karly Gauthier'. Monika is awesome!!!
You get what you put in. If you do the work, pay attention in class, and study you will pass with flying colors. Not a class to blow off.
Good teacher, but somewhat confusing approach with lectures. Labs were pretty easy. study her notes and do the book problems, and it's an easy A. Comparing to all the other chemistry teachers OCC has Mrs, Chodan is the best one so far.
Not the greatest teacher. I had to teach my self everything to get an A. But class was super easy as long as you study her notes read the book you should be fine. The book saved me this semester. Not the teacher
This class is basically an independent study, you'l tach yourself the material. However, labs are quick, PLENTY of extra credit is given, and she gives out packets that cover everything on the test. Also: she's strict with rules and attendance affects grades. She WILL ask you to leave if you forget goggles or are late for lab.
I don't see how there are so many bad reviews about her. She is wonderful. She is the sweetest woman and if you don't know what's going on she will help you. Labs are quick and simple.
I am currently a Pre-Med student at Oakland University. i took this class because i never took an into chem class in high school. i can honestly say i owe my entire chemistry carreer to Professor Chodan. she is the best at what she does and i suggest everyone takes this professor.
She's really nice, but her teaching style wasn't the best for me, since her handouts have the solutions right under the example questions. Be ready to teach yourself. She's helpful, gives a bunch of extra credit (be ready to move around campus), and labs are very quick. We had 3 hour lab sessions and were usually done within 45 minutes.
She only has one way of explaining things, so if you don't understand it the first time then you won't at all. Her English isn't the best, which doesn't help. She is very knowledgeable, but only works for certain people.
She is not very clear in her directions, especially when you ask her to explain something to you. It can be hard to understand what she is saying, due to her accent. HARSH GRADER! Most of the time If you don't get the exact correct answer, even if your super close, no points for you. I've also caught her contradicting herself. So be aware!
Hands down the worst professor I've ever had. She did research work at Harvard and taught briefly at Michigan State. There is a reason she's not employed by either of those institutions currently. The same reason she needs to offer 60 EC points. Also, this course is not easier at Comm. College- take it at university, that looks better anyhow!
The absolute hands down worst professor I've ever taken in my entire life.
she is the worse teacher I've ever had
Awfully quick and vague over complicated topics. Super anal retentive to an annoying extent. Bad at explaining. Worst professor Ive ever encountered.
I found that I was teaching myself the material throughout the entire semester. She does her best to explain things, but I never found it to be helpful, and she is very hard to understand due to her accent. Although, she gives plenty of extra credit to help students be more successful in the class. Just be prepared to work hard, and teach yourself
She is hard to understand, ask a question she will get confused what you are asking etc. Tests are very difficult, NO partial credit, must be spelled correctly. She even marked two problems wrong because I didn't completely enclose my "O" in one word. She is always changing labs with little notice and is very picky when grading. gave a C-
She gives us 50 page packets per test and thinks that reading the packet and the examples in it word for word (during lecture) are going to help us. She also has a weird way of explaining concepts that help no one. The tests were not hard in terms of material but the terrible teaching caused a majority of class to drop or fail. Labs are useless.
I took her for CHEM1000, and boy that was not a good idea. Yes, she is a nice person, but was not a good teacher. She'd give you a 30+ page packet for studying which never helped. Labs weren't too bad, yet didn't really help. Finally she explains everything very poorly making the class sound a lot more harder than it is. If you take CHEM, avoid her
Her teaching method is very hard to fallow. She makes material in class seem easy to fallow with the most basic examples and then test questions are really tough and not covered in class. She's a nice lady but a bad teacher. She doesn't make herself very easy to get with outside of class either.
if you literally do not give a rats about your GPA getting buried 6 feet under then I really suggest this class for you! if you love learning absolutely nothing this IS the class for you. and if you absolutely LOVE getting pushed behind in your degree, monikers your girl! -10/10. enjoy
what is wrong w/OCC to hire a professor like this. she is so rude and does not know how to teach. she hand out a 70 page packet front and back and doesn't even go over it all she does is read along the packet of whats written. I seriously wish occ would read her ratings to see what kind of teacher she is. lab with her is hell literally traumatizing
Worst professor to take for chemistry
Where do I start with her. She is the worst teacher I have ever had. She gives you huge packets and reads it straight from the packet doesn't go into any detail. Leaves important things out. Everyone had 2 different versions of lab packets. She is hard to understand. Explains things in ways that make zero sense. No partial credit on tests. Avoid
Completely aweful teacher. I made the mistake of taking this class due to the fact that my math score was so high and did not think about it. Pretty much if you fail the first test, then immediately drop the class because it is going to be extremely hard to get that grade back up. Horrible at teaching. There is some extra credit, but time consuming
I took this class as an 8 week summer course. The class is fast paced, but she is very clear about the material, and offers a lot of extra credit. There are no prelabs or postlab quizzes and the labs are fairly quick and straightforward. You are given note packets for all the material, so you can focus on the lecture without writing the whole class
Do not listen to the bad reviews regarding her. She was the best professor I have ever had. She explains everything so thoroughly and always asks if we all understand. You will do well if you study her lecture notes really well. Her labs never took more than an hour. Take if you plan on putting in the effort. Offers a lot of extra credit which help
I have her for Chem 1510 and I have dropped her class. She does not explain anything thoroughly. She gives you a 50 page packet that she just reads verbatim in class. No practice problems in class, labs relate to nothing that we are learning, and out of 34 students that started the semester there are less than 15 left. DON'T TAKE CHEM WIT CHODAN.
Please do me a favor and DO NOT take Chodan for Chemistry unless you are fantastic at self-teaching or you just hate yourself. I do not consider myself to be a bad student, but taking Chodan for Chem 1000 made me feel like an absolute idiot. Turns out it wasn't just me, out of 30 starting students I think 10-15 made it through. Read her reviews!
Avoid her class at all costs. She is a very nice person, but horrible at teaching. Her lectures are her reading word for word off 60 page packets and not going into detail. She'll go over the simplest things then completely gloss over the hardest problems which will inevitably be on the exam. Averages on tests/quizzes were always super low 60%.
Heavy lectures, she goes over a subject once and then moves on and never revisits it. There is a lot of self-teaching you have to do. She doesn't give you any advice or hints of what will be on the exams and no review guides. The exams and quizzes are relatively hard. There is extra credit but it has no correlation to the stuff you are learning
I don't know where these bad reviews are coming from. she is very nice but this class is for people who like to self teach, and thats me. This class was not difficult at all, clearly these people did not study. I wish I can take her again
You have to read, do the homework and the labs. Its not difficult, you just cant be lazy. All of her notes are given to you for a reason, use them. The homework in the book will help you understand how to do the problems. It can be intimidating at first but once the class gets going it goes by smoothly.
I had her earlier this year when COVID hit. Nice woman, she wants to see her students to succeed. That being said, you need to work hard for your grade. Her tests are challenging, but if you read the packets she gives (idk if this applies to her online classes) you should at least pass. If you have lab with her, bring goggles and NEVER arrive late.
Class was so full there wasnt enough seats, the last class I attended before failing had 9 people including myself
