Always there when you need her - and I needed her a lot.
This class was extremely hard and she demanded ALOT of your time...I have never tried so hard in a class and got a c+, learned alot but put in way to much effort!!! Never again!!!
this lady is so nice! she really cares for her students and wants you to learn . . . punctuality is very important, so don't be late! also she might be a bit annoying but she wants you to learn and she she's nice . . .
This professor is really nice. She pushes her students but only because she really cares. She is extremly helpful! She loves participators. I enjoyed this class!
I really enjoyed taking class with Professor Slater. She was fun and witty which made class a lot more fun ... and that was definitely difficult to do because it was a class and I HATE taking night classes:( She was extremely helpful and really seemed to care if the students were retaining the information covered in class.
very helpful
Professor Slater was cool. She was very helpful and really wants her students to learn and pass the class. She has a heavy accent but you'll get used to it. Nice professor! I recommend her!
Professor Slater was one of the best instructors I've had at SDSU. She provided A LOT of guidance when needed but also made you think for yourself. She doesn't BS, and I loved that about her. Highly recommended!
She's a very entertaining. She grades very hard. but i learned a lot. She's very willing to help you with your papers and work with you. I thought I was doing poorly but I ended up getting a C+.
She's very helpful and shows care about every single student. She is very professional and does everything to help students to pass the class. She assigns tutors and makes you turn in many corrections of your essay which help a lot on gaining your writing skills. I took her and passed the class. I like her.
Professor Slater is a wonderful teacher. She is always willing to help her students, it shows that she wants us to pass. She is also very sarcasstic which makes the class fun. HIGHLYY RECOMMEND HER!!!
Overall I thought she was hard because of the NUMEROUS amounts of writing and reading but that's only because I'm not very proficient at writing. Other then that she is very helpful and is willing to help you no matter what. Conferences here and there but actually take time to perfect your writing and I ended with an A- luckily.
I loved Mrs. Slater. She was very helpful and cares about her students. If you have the opportunity take her!!
Slater is really ACCURATE with english language. Sometimes picky. She might say something one day and then say another the next which is frustrating. Don't expect turning in a perfect paper..she'll find a way to mark it up. A lot of essays and reading assignments. But all in all, your writing will surely improve if you stick with it!
She is very helpful and has tons of office hours. She revises your essays and wants you to succeed. She has mandatory tutoring if she sees that you need help or are having difficulty. She cares about what she does and what her students do. highly recommend her!!! *Note: lots of essays but she goes over what to write about and revises your work
Shes rude and is unclear on her assignments. She gives tons of homework and its hard to read her hand writing when she writes on the board and corrects papers. I don't recommend her at all.
Wow i really don't know how this teacher received good ratings. She is horrible. She ruined my day every time i saw her face and heard her voice. Although i did well in her class she is rude and seems mad at life all the time. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS run far away.
I'm sorry having this teacher ruined my first semester at State. Not only was going to her class painful, i didn't learn much. I don't recommend taking this class with her. I worked my butt off in this class and received no credit.
Slater was an ok teacher. If you go to office hours, listen to what she says, and stand out of the crowd, she will help you in anyway she can even though her way of helping is a little rude and annoying. However, she is very pessimistic and she only makes your day if there are no comments on your paper, which is rare.
She has a heavy German accent which took me a while to get use to. Her handwriting is hard to understand sometimes. She improved my writing skills by giving alot of grammar exercises on blackboard.
I had her too, and my writing has improved more in just 3 months than all through high school. She is an amazingly effective teacher and shows a lot of care for her students. Face-to-face appointments and instant (not two weeks later) feedback on all papers really made a difference. 92A was a class I was happy taking, but it was well worth it.
I believe that she was a great professor. She really wants to help you out a lot. She grades hard but its only to make you a better writer. I'd recommend taking her, she really helps you improve your writing dramatically.
A lot of work and a lot of papers! YET, she will give you soooo much feedback on your essays that will make your papers nearly flawless! This is extremely helpful & crucial in order to have a good portfolio by the end of semester. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! Just bare with it & u will be able to move on in life of low rws
Slater is a very interesting and demanding teacher. Even though she's picky about how to write an essay, she wants to see all her students do well. She's also very helpful during her office hours.
Very helpful teacher. She might be a little hard and picky but she cares for her students. I was able to pass her 92B class because I took advantage of her office hours. If you want to get help, she will help you. With this class I became a better writer. Trust me take this class if you want to pass a remedial RWS class. She will not let you down.
Extremely helpful teacher. She may come across as rude, but she just wants to see you succeed. She gives a lot of feedback on essays, and makes sure they are perfect for your portfolio. If you work hard, you can pass. I highly recommend her!!
If you want to pass then take this class. She makes sure your work is perfect and she will get on your case to make sure you're on track while individually identify all of your weaknesses and helping you overcome them. Just make sure to attend class and do your work. She works HARD to help everyone so attend class everyday and do the bits of HW
You'd think all of the Homework she gives you is a waste of time.. and then at the end of the semester, all the skills that you've been practicing, considering you did your homework, pay off since your thoroughly revised folder is near perfection and the final essays are a breeze since she teaches very well. I just wish she taught other RWS classes
Interesting teacher. She really gets in your face and makes sure you are learning. She wants everyone to pass and she will stay after school to do so. Sometimes her German accent bugs me.
Worked hard but in the end it payed off. I highly recommend this teacher.
Very very demanding class. Homework everyday and she is very demanding when it comes to essays. Multiple drafts. She is extremely helpful though and a great great teacher but the workload was too much for me. If you love Rhetoric and don't mind work take this class but if you are lazy like me... don't.
Monika slater is a brilliant teacher. She definitely knows her stuff. But her cynicism and negative remarks make it difficult to learn in the classroom. Take her for rws90 since it is a pass fail class but nothing else.
Very good teacher. She challenges you inside and outside the classroom. Her remarks on essays are very helpful. Use her office hours! They are useful and will help you get a good grade in the class.
Monika is one of the most amazing professors. Her accent is hard to understand at times but she is so hilarious. There is a lot of work in the class but its all basic and easy. Essays are hard but if you use her office hours you can ace them no problem, she wants to help you!
If you want to improve your ability to write, take this class. She has essays due section-by-section, so you don't cram to finish one all the night before. She gives HELPFUL feedback on everything you turn in, and really does push you to help you learn. The accent can be terrifying.
don't ever try to put yourself in this class she is a tough teacher and never give excuse to student if late or sick or so on made you work hard and then failing
I love being her student. She really invests in her students and wants you to get better at writing. With her help i have improved my writing ability so much. I hope to find another class she is teaching for next semester
This class is extremely hard. She is really no help at all, and an extremely harsh grader. I thought I was going to fail the entire semester, but I passed with a C, even after not attending some of her classes. Overall, you do learn and become a better writer, but the class is very difficult and a lot of work is needed to pass.
Monika is an absolutely amazing professor. I would recommend her to anyone. She strives for her students to succeed. Her teaching style might be a little daunting at first, but you will get used to it. To the people that want to do well in her class make sure you participate and do your work. I would also highly recommend going to her office hours.
Slater takes her class serious. If you care, she is extremely helpful, personable, and approachable. She understands school can get rough, and she makes accommodations upon request, but she expects her students to work for their grade. I got an overall grade of an A. Be warned, my A was earned with blood and sweat, metaphorically speaking.
Monika is awesome but not for everyone. She'll definitely expect you to make an effort but nothing too intense. She is openly critical and blunt and if you aren't prepared for it this can come off as being mean. This is, I think, her European teaching style: we're all here to learn so mistakes happen and should be pointed out.
This is probably one of the hardest GE's I've taken. She assigns you homework that she doesn't announce in class, and assumes you check blackboard every night. Extremely rough grading wise. There are other teachers that will teach you how to write without all these ludicrous assignments/tough grading. Avoid
This was the hardest class of the semester, but she was really funny and sarcastic, and plays around with the students. The work is tough, but not as hard as the other RWS200 classes. She grades very hard, but if you get to know her, she will help you with grades.Get to know her. She gives a lot of extra credit at the end of the semester.
This class was extremely hard and stressful. She leaves a lot of homework and gives a lot of quizzes. Don't get me wrong I guarantee you that you will learn a lot.During the semester she will make every student feel their are failing but she only does this to stress you out. She gives a lot of extra credit and participation points.
i love this teacher! she pushes you and forces you to do critical thinking. made me a better writer which has helped me in all of my college papers. yes class is hard, but she brings out the best in students. very funny and passionate about teaching. gets discouraged when students show lack of interest in their own education. proofread your papers!
I have never encountered such a rude professor. I asked her for clarification once and I was shocked at how rude and passive aggressive her comment was. I would not recommend taking her class.
So I did not want this professor the one I wanted had a full class. These reviews are true class was very hard. Never understood what she wanted. She was fairly rude and short with students. Figure out what she wants cater to it is all I can think to do. If you get her work hard and pray.
I took her 305 too. Must have been in a different universe. We could choose our own topic to write about. She conferenced extensively and allowed more than one revision. Helped me tremendously with my writing.
HORRIBLE. Rude and confusing. Not helpful and the class is depressing. Hated every day of it, as did all my peers. We couldn't wait for each hour to be over.
Great teacher, you can be rude at times, but writing was not a strong point of mine. She had me come to her office for extra mentoring and I was able to pass the class with a high grade....
Possibly the most condescending and rude professor I have ever encountered at SDSU. She is rude and sticks her nose up to students who ask for help. DO NOT TAKE HER FOR BA 290. Take this class at a community college, it's for your own good.
She is by far the worst professor in the business. She is not only rude and strict, but incompetent. There is nothing you can do that will satisfy this lady. I put a lot of work into that class so she can give me no more than a D. She literally failed a students assignment and gave him a 0/50 just because she does not like him. Im gonna report her
One of the worst professors I've ever had, she says "whatever" at least once a day in reply to students. Has no real calendar for assignments. Does not truly teach in class and expects students to know how to format papers without giving thorough examples. She is bitter and rude, and has no idea how to use technology.
Her class is hard. The grading is hard and nothing worth an A for her. Can look bitter and rude but she is actually nice if you got to know her a little bit and if you stoped by her office hours. She would help you if you went to her office hours. If you could, take the class with another professor.
She seems bitter at first, but after getting to know her she is very helpful and nice. She wants everyone to succeed and if you email her she responds very timely. Although she sometimes contradicts herself when correcting assignments she has clear and easy assignments. Does not require too much outside work.
Prof Slater sounds intimidating at first but after the first essay, she will clarify and edit all essays. She will definitely help you understand how to write successfully. Attend class and follow he advice when she reviews the essays because that will really help a lot. Challenging class, definitely worth it!
Monika Slater is tough but she knows what she is doing. She makes sure that her students are doing good. She is funny, but she has a really strong German accent. Take her! you might not enjoy it as much but you will learn and improve for sure :)
Comes off stern @first but it's only her German culture. She's a kind person & helpful if you want help. Many assignments, wkly online reading tests, 1 grp proj, lots of class discussions not really lecturing, plenty of opportunities to revise hw after feedback. She offers xtra cr @end since she grades tough. Participation reqd. Go 2 office hrs!
One of the best teachers I have ever had! If you try to participate and go to office hours she will really like you. She is hard on her students but cares more than any other professor. Gives tons of corrections and chances to edit assignments, plus a fabulous dry sense of humor. Not condescending or rude, respect her class and she'll respect you.
Personally, Slater was not a good teacher. She is condescending and rude to her students. She made 2 people cry this semester. However, if you take the time to learn and do all of the dumb assignments she assigns, it will pay off. If you like getting treated like a 12 year old, this is your class. And remember, YOU perspective!
She is not the easiest teacher but she inspires her students to critically think. She expects you to do all the readings and to annotate them. Don't come to class unprepared because she often pick random people to participate. She can be intimidating but she is willing to help!
She is very rude to some students and to others she really likes. Its tough to get on her good side and if you don't good luck.
she is a tough teacher and grader but i promise you. Your writing will improve drastically . make sure to participate so she can like you.
She may not be an ideal professor for many people, because she seems stern. However, she is definitely someone who is willing to help. Go to her office hours for help. When you read the book, listen to her, and talk to her, you will get the most out of her teaching. Communication is a big part of life, and I mean it. Her class is very worth taking!
She expects a lot from you, but she always gives a lot in return (For example: she expects that you make corrections to your paper and completely revise it, but she grades fast and gives lots of feedback) She is constantly there for anyone who seeks her help during office hours, and is not mean at all, but you have to work for the grade!
Slater can be pretty funny at times, but she is one of the rudest and most stubborn teachers I've ever had. Along with being a very meticulous grader, I would avoid her AT ALL COSTS. She wants everything done HER WAY, or you will not score well. 80% of my time this semester was devoted to her class, and I still barely pulled a C (first one ever).
Slater has a decent sense of humor but is very rude to her students and grades on whether or not she likes you. If you do not meet the personal expectations she sets in her head for you early in the semester, prepare to get poor grades with no explanation. Would recommend you avoid her unless you want a rigorous semester of coursework.
Took this class during the summer and I LEARNED SO MUCH FROM IT. I learned things that I was never taught during my high school career. The feedback Professor Slater gives is extremely helpful! In addition, she could be funny at time. Furthermore, she genuinely cares about her students. TAKE HER IF YOU WANT TO TRULY IMPROVE YOUR WRITING SKILL.
This class is not easy. Dont think you can pass by writing mediocre essays. You really have to put in a lot of work. She expects each one to be structured the way she wants it. Slater is a hard grader. Be prepared to read and analyze a lot. There are optional assignments that are useful for points.
At first, I thought Slater was rude and strict. But she really cares about her students and want their writing to improve. Very sweet lady if you get to know her and are willing to put in the effort. The 3 essays & 2 group projects were on pretty interesting topics and she gives amazing feedback. She will make you be a better writer if you try.
she is very rude to her students and grades on whether or not she likes you, so Strict. don't take the class with her. she is german and her accent is not clear, I could not understand most of things.
Slater is by far the worst professor ever. If she decides she doesn't like you in the beginning of the year (me), she grades you accordingly for every essay thereafter. On one essay, she wrote "I stopped working here" on the second page of my essay and gave me 50/120. Very unprofessional and rude to those she doesn't like, and it's very obvious.
Great teacher, I thought she was strict and intimidating at the beginning of the year, but i quickly found out that that is her sense of humor. Participate in class because her classes are discussion oriented, and it will make the class much more interesting.
Slater may seem intimidating and it made me afraid of participating, but she cares and wants the best for you. One time I told her I couldn't make it to her office hours and she made time for me outside of her hours. She's funny and sarcastic, and gives constructive criticism on the essays. She grades hard, but it's made me a better writer overall.
She has a harsh personality and mostly points out the cons of your essays. but she made me a better writer. If you go to class, listen, participate, and go to her office hours she will like you. It is lots of work but I respect her, and her German accent isn't too bad.
Slater is a tough professor. If you want to do well in the class make sure you participate because it will help you when you write your essays and it is part of the grade. She gives you the readings for the semester. Overall, great professor.
She's a hard grader but she gives good feedback on the assignments during the conferences and during her office hours. She had us print out the textbook which she wrote (important because EZ Books tells you to buy a different textbook, which we ended up never needing).
Professor Slater is so helpful and really funny! Her dry humor is great and try not to talk in class if you don't know the answer. Most valuable class at State so far in terms of real world projects.
Monika may initially come off as crass and abrasive, but once you really get to know, she is one of the most caring, introspective, and philosophical professors I have had. She really pushed me to think beyond and dig deep for answers. Go to her OH and get feedback on your work, do the revisions, and you'll get As.
She seems scary and strict at first, but later you'll see that she only wants the best for her students. She really cares for participation and open conversations. She has a thick German accent, but she's really nice about repeating herself. She also gives good feedback on essays and really makes you think about philosophical topics. Great class!
Slater is a really tough grader, she gives out a lot of Ds and Cs . She only gave about 2 A's on each paper she assigned. Her prompts are also extremely hard. I had to write a 10 page paper on the connection between Buddhism, physics, and Native Americans while other RWS 100 classes were writing about 3 page papers social media. Don't take!
Tough class but definitely made me a better writer. Grades heavily on grammar. If you pay attention and take notes while she talks about the material and how she wants it written in the essays, you should be fine.
Going to class is key to passing this class. She goes over everything she wants in the essay during class. If you show up and participate she will give you full points for participation. Go to office hours while working on essay and you'll get an AThick German accent but is willing to repeat. 3 essays and one in class timed essay for final.
I took this class last semester and I had my doubts about it, but Professor Slater was very clear as to what she wanted for each essay. If you show up to class each day, you will know exactly what to include in your essay because she goes over all of the readings. She also does conferences which helps immensely because she gives great feedback.
Loved her class! Idk why people are saying she is rude, that's just her humor lol stop being so sensitive! I went to office hours for each of my papers & she told me exactly what to fix. Got As on every single one of my papers. She really helped me improve my writing, so take her bc you will have to write more papers in college and she helps a lot
I liked that she allowed for a lot of conversation in the class. She has very radical political views about Feminism and Economics that she likes to bring in the class, she is very resistant to any opposing opinions. She will grade you badly if you offend her politically correct sensibilities.
Her lectures were engaging, thoughtful, and memorable. Always participate and go to the essay conferences because your grade depends on it.
If you want to succeed in this class, then you should show up to class, go to her office hours to improve your papers, and participate in class discussions. She gives great feedback on your essays, so don't be afraid to ask for help!
This class had very interesting content with real world connections. Ms. Slater gave us many opportunities to get feedback on our essays, which was helpful. However, she does come off very abrasive which made it difficult for me to feel confident sharing during class discussions. Essays were graded very hard and my writing did not improve.
Monika Slater is the worst English teacher I have ever had in my life. The questions she asks are always extremely challenging and specific. If your answer is a little off from hers, it is wrong. I have gone to countless hours of her office hours and optional conferences and after each time I am left more confused, frustrated and disappointed.
As I type this review, I am having a mental breakdown. If you are reading this, I hope you are smart enough NOT to choose this professor. She makes the class harder than it has to be. Very unclear in what she wants. Self-esteem and confidence in any writing ability you had will sink to the bottom. The only good thing is the classroom is nice.
read the books, go to class and you'll learn so much. She's got some dry humor but honestly will learn a lot.
Slater is a hard grader but she is worth it. My favorite class first semester of freshman year. She is so caring, and she wants you to pass. You will pass this class if you put the work in, I promise. So so glad I took this class.
She is most likely the worst professor at San Diego State University. She is not only a tough grader but will chop up your essay if you have a different interpretation of the article than she does. During conferences, she is not open-minded to the students perception of the article and will make you feel like you are the absolute worst writer.
Definitely difficult but gives tons of feedback. Edits your draft, goes over it during conference (class canceled 3x during semester), and then you've a week to get it finished. Lots of class discussions and she never lets go of a question until its answered. Makes you a deeper thinker.
Monika's class is all discussion based, no lectures so you better have your readings done. She provides outlines and examples for each essay and helps revise them if you go to office hours. What I liked is she saw when I slacked off and helped me get back on track.
She will definitely make you a better writer if you work with her. I scored low on the quizzes but as long as you go to her office hours for feedback and pay attention during class you can get a good grade. Another tip, get on her good side by engaging during discussions.
Monika Slater is the worst teacher I have ever had in my entire academic career. She is not only rude, but unwilling to work and truly help her students. I was very successful in previous English/Writing classes but this class has been nothing but the opposite. She is bitter, unkind, and 100% not what you want in a professor. AVOID HER PLEASE!!!!!!
She also goes by Martha Slater. She was the absolute worst teacher I have ever had! She is NEVER satisfied. Does not give good feedback. Makes you feel that you are dumb. I was so stressed out from her class that I became depressed. She made me cry because she told me my work sucked. If you have an option for another teacher take them!
Classes are mostly discussions. She really does seem tough at first and takes attendance at the start of class which counts towards your grade. Leaves good feedback on your papers. When you participate in her discussion, all her attention will be towards you until you finish discussing or if somebody else pitches in. Will help you if you want help.
She is a bit intimidating and harsh but gives great feedback. As long as you listen to her in lecture, you should score fine on all assignments, she tells you what she wants and how within class. There are some pop quizzes so make sure to actually read beforehand. However, if you print the handbook you can use it in class for the quizzes.
It is impossible to writing anything good for this professor. She will never encourage your writing, only tell you in a disrespectful way what is wrong with your writing, not respectfully how you can improve. Do not take this class, you will be left so discouraged.
I wish I did not take her class. She was by far the rudest, most disrespectful teacher I have ever had. She is discouraging. She will not give you 100%, even on basic homework assignments, even if you have completed the assignment exactly as instructed. The way she spoke to me and my peers made me question how she has not been fired yet.
I do recommend her class even though she's kind of rude and very sarcastic. The grade is based on 3 essays and some quizzes. The quizzes are not easy, in fact I failed most of them. But her essays are really easy to get a good grade on, because you can submit them twice. Her grading scale is the most generous I have ever seen, like 55% it's a C-.
If you have the choice, do not take this class. Instead of teaching, she just interrogates her students to the point where most of my class is scared to talk in discussions. Also, she goes over the entire article and every part of the essays and then marks you down when you repeat something she has said in class.
Most disrespectful teacher I have ever had, really mean and nasty to her students. I don't know why she is teaching if she clearly hates it so much. I do not recommend this teacher.
WORST TEACHER EVER. Never take a class with her, EVER. She does not care about you and your feelings, she's rude, never gives you a good grade, assigns stupid papers, and won't help you (unless you want to go to her office hours which she will just tell you that you are a bad writer and she can't help) She is not understanding or empathetic at all.
horrible teacher. she is so mean and rude. made tons of my classmates cry and I feel like I am a horrible writer. I have gotten A's in every English class I have taken but this one. I am getting a C and it is so unfair. Do not take a class with her you will regret it so much. She needs to be fired
Monika is a fantastic professor who challenges her students, and it is frustrating she gets so many bad reviews. She won't just hand you an A, she wants you to work in her class and become a better writer because of it. Her accent is completely understandable and she is a very caring person. Go during office hours and she will help you.
Professor Slater is amazing!! All you need to do is go to her office hours to get help on your essays and she WILL fully help you. I learned a lot from her class! Anyone who doesnt like her... thats a personal problem :)
I would not recommend to take Professor Slater if you don't have to. If the class doesn't understand what she is asking she gets annoyed quick and won't move past it. Classes weren't helpful. We were told not to use the material learned in class because it's not "thinking for ourselves." Tough class but not impossible if you work for it.
I dislike writing papers of any kind so this class was a struggle. The main issue I had was the lack of guidance; many times, it was unclear what was due and what she was looking for. I was always hesitant to talk in class or go to her office hours because she is not approachable. It often seems she doesn't care if you succeed.
Not lenient at all. All she does is interrogate and talk rude to her students when asked a question. She does give a lot of time for the 3 essays you need to do for the class tough.
No actual teaching involved. Ms. Slater does not encourage students' writing, and belittles students when they say/do something wrong, instead of uplifting them and TEACHING them. However, she does give copious amount of time to submit your essays and there are only 3 essays to submit for the entire class. Her grading scale is also very lenient.
Honestly she wasn't an awful teacher. She gave time to meet with her and would email back fast. But she was a TOUGH grader!!! I tried very hard on some of my papers and still received a grade I wasn't satisfied with.
It wasn't as bad as everyone makes it seem. I didn't go to a single office hour and still got an A-. All you need to do to succeed in the essays is take notes during class and look at the documents she provides. She provides good notes and makes pretty clear what she wants in each essay. But, she can be a pain during class when nobody participates.
She might come off as a little intimidating at first but don't let that scare you off! After going to her office hours multiple times, I realized that there was no reason to be scared. Once you get to know her you will realize that she is caring and really just wants the best for you. Just make sure to put some effort in.
