Boring class, but good teaching.
Great teacher, I'll learn a lot!
your mark will reflect your effort.
The work isn't hard but it never stops. Just say i didn't have enough time to finish, can i hand it in on the week of finals or shout EXTENSION . Works everytime.
feminist !!! hates men

Useless assignments but easy to do. Your mark reflects what you put in.
Take her classes. There aren't many profs in the eng dept better than she is. Organized, interesting, and helpful. Marks do reflect effort.
if you want to pass GO TO HER OFFICE HOURS!!! in class she's not very clear and is has a very specific way she wants things done. I didn't like her at first, but if you go to her office hours you'll like her better and get the grads you need.
She in love with the sound of her own voice and repeats her self endlessly. Also gives out way to much work!
Worst prof at uvic by far. She has nothing interesting to say or teach you. I feel I learned nothing from her class and in relations to what other sections of 135 I feel like I need a refund. Horrible simlply horrible.
She doesn't like to admit she's wrong. Likes to talk a lot. Marks harsh but if you complain she might change your mark. Take notes, you'll need them!
do not take any courses from her! if you have a heavy course load she will bring your entire gpa down because she gives too many assignments. if you have an opinion keep it to yourself because only her ideas are right. professor hume is a good prof.
Advice to first-years: Forget everything she taught you. No other professor will agree. Her assignments are pointless and she wastes a mountain of paper. Worst english prof I ever had.
Really did not like her. Very conceeded in herself and found classes very pointless. Wouldn't take another class from her.
meaningless assignments but takes it very seriously, pretty boring classes, marks quite hard but like other english classes u just need to kno what she wants
Great prof. If you go to her office hours, she is willing to help you 100%. Assignments are bit of a bore, but the prof is really helpful. No final exam, just easy assignments. Good gpa booster if you are willing to put in time and effort.
The business english course she teaches is very easy to get a good mark in. Midterm was only worth 10% and the final was a letter of what you had learned in the class! Talks a lot, but look up the word lecture! Good prof.
Liked her more than most. Very "prim" but I wramed up to her. Projects manageble and no final/midterm. I agree with office hours...big help. Not a cakewalk, but not a hell course either.
Monika is a great professor. Her perfectionism may become annoying. Easy course, great teacher, I would recommend either Monika or cullen for engr 240. Thanks Monika.
She was very helpful in improving my writing skills. If you pay attention you will get something out of this course. Her assignments are pretty easy, she basically hand feeds you what you need to know. The class itself was boring, but you can't blame that on her.
I have never failed an english assignment in my life. She failed me on the first two I handed in. She gives too many assignments (especially reading), marks pretty ridiculously hard. I was impressed with her helpfulness if you go to see her in office hours. That's about it. wouldn't recommend.
Hard marker, I worked on my first paper for over a week, had it proof read by 2 english majors and still got a C! Still got a B overall but she is a hard marker and the readings she assigns are really boring.
Monika is an excellent prof. she just wants everyone to do well, and if you talk to her in office hours she will bend over backwards to help you with anything. her assignments are fairly easy. overall a very enjoyable course!
failed the first assignment of the year...writers beware...boring, difficult, dont do the readings unless there is a quiz on them cause they almost all suck, not that many assignments throughout year, id probably take this class again cause my friends claim their english profs were even worse...
Lots of work in this class, She presents the information well. Too much work though and stupid quizes (The semi colon), I learned alot though and would take another class from her
This course in reflection is benefitial. The idea of academic reading to gain information and comprehend it is useful. The tedious assignments are really boring, and if you do not stick to Monika's outline then your marking will not be that great. I learnt that the hard way, first assignment C. I wouldn't take the course again.
This is the first teacher I didn't like at UVic. She's anal about attendance, so unless you miss less than 3 lectures a semester, don't take a course with Monika. The assignments were lame, although some of the readings were vagely interesting.
Reading choices and class discussions centered upon feminism and how men are the downfall of society more than how to improve english skills. I expected to learn about university level writing, but instead was taught how men fantasize about childbirth and want to bear children. (Yeah...we were actually told that)
Very helpful! Nice. Assignments can be boring-- but easy A! Just pay attention and you'll do fine!
Wow. Stay far far away from this piece of work.
Very hard marker for a first year class. Very tedious assignments worth 1-2.5% of grade. She uses a lot of exaggerated hand gestures, which I found very annoying.
English 135 is a writing intensive course, and Monika is a hard marker. She's helpful if you see her during office hours, but the class is tough!
She is really helpful! I enjoy her class :)
Monica was a great, encouraging prof. She strived to help all of her students to be sucessful. If you do the work(it is the same in all English 135 classes), you will be fine in her class. If she offered higher level English classes I would gladly take them.
Stay away from Monika and 135 as a whole! Monika picks favorites, is very **** and marks EXTREMELY hard. Nearly everyone was disappointed with their marks on larger assignments. I got a C+ and then took 146 and 147 and got an A- in both without changing my writing style. 146 and 147 are WAY more enjoyable and I highly recommend them over 135.
people, choose someone else... She is a very harsh marker, sometimes unpredictable, too. I put equal amount of work in to all my assignments but I get dramatically diffferent marks. very weird.... This course probably draged my gpa down quite a bit... My friend took 146 before 135 and she got better in 146 than she is getting now in 135.
Clear in content. Explains your mistakes well. Gives good advice. Perfect professor for an knowledgable student. Likes juicy little details.
Clear...but its and english class so its boring. She's easy, so for an engineer this is a good thing
A fair marker IF you can get her to clearly outline what she's expecting of you, otherwise it's impossible. Good idea to ask for clarification after class. She has a habit of rambling on without really saying anything, which can be extremely annoying. I ended up not taking notes, not that it's needed as all info is in textbooks.
Not a very good prof, her explanations were a little strange. Her marking is also very inconsistent and if she doesn't like you your pretty much SOL.
She was great, always up beat and trying to make boring topics as interesting as she could, I felt her marking was very fair. Just a lovely person
Great prof! she turned a class I had to take into one I wanted to take. Very fair marker, cares about her students. If you are not sure about guidelines or want to know if your on the right track with your work, just ask her in her office hours and she will be extremely helpful! We did not have any midterms and final was pretty easy.
She likes the sound of her own voice. Lectures are a waste of time. She doesn't really teach anything. This course really just assesses your writing ability. Her feedback isn't really helpful. Her opinion of wordiness is a bit ridiculous. She cuts out parts of sentences which are necessary to understand what it is trying to say.
She is useless in the classroom, going off on weird tangents and wasting time when the class has only limited time to do workshopping. However, she has also produced extremely impressive and detailed instructions for all the assignments, so the course can practically be done by correspondance.
Extremely dull lectures but useful information. She posts her slides online as well as handouts ( documents with extremely detailed information on the proper use of punctuation, grammar, report writing etc.), and A papers from previous years. She is a very fair marker and will help you any way she can. I missed two quizzes but she let me rewrite.
I loved Monika, she was very sweet and helpful. All of her assignments were laid out clearly with pretty much all of her grading criteria in it. You spend the last half of the term doing a group project which is a fair amount of work. A lot of her class content is unimportant but you have to be there to stay of top of things and due dates.
Really good professor. Tells you exactly what she expects (and often gives you the marking scheme she will use) so it's your own fault if you don't do well. A large percent of your mark comes from a group project which sucks if you get a bad group, but at least she takes into account everyone's team evaluations.
Monika is really a kind and nice teacher. She helps me a lot during this course and her grades is usually very fair. I strongly recommend this teacher in my personal view.
Ms. Smith is a good English professor because she teaches the class clearly and helpfully, and she gives marks and feedbacks generally and acceptably. For example, in my class, everyone's marks are close to the overall grade. Also, she marks essays fairly. Although sometimes she does not say something very clearly, we can also find her after class.
Really outstanding!!!!!
Very fair marker and really care about her students. Highly recommend her.
The kindest being I've ever seen at this university. easy going, has a goal of helping students whether in class or outside the class.
Very good prof. Reasonable, responds to emails reasonably fast, and is always pleasant to listen to in class. Her lectures are easy to zone out to, but the material is easy enough that there's no problem with it. Group projects and presentations are in the class, which she facilitates and makes sure workloads are balanced.
Best English professor in UVIC!
She's a tough marker, don't expect higher than an 80%. She will give you amazing feedback if you take the time to go to her office hours and talk to her. She'll tell you exactly what needs improvement, and how to improve it. She's a phenomenal prof who really cares about her students. If you put in the effort you can do really well in her class.
God bless Monika. She's like a less angry Helen Mirren and I loved her class
She was an amazing prof. Wish she would let you submit PDF instead of docx. I'd take a class with her again. Don't think this class is an Easy A.
She is a tough grader, and does not give very clear feedback. If you want an A you have to be one of the top writers in your class. Had to put in a lot of work and effort just for a b.
Although her lecture style isn't the most flashy, I thought her care in making the assignments applicable was outstanding. She is a tough but fair grader. Would definitely recommend.
She cares a lot and will give you lots of help and feedback if you ask. Her speaking style is rather dull. The final group project has a lot of unnecessary paperwork, and grading was tough at times, but overall a useful course and an enthusiastic prof.
Monika is an absolutely excellent professor. She gives clear, step-by-step instructions for assignments and provides helpful feedback throughout the writing process. She is a kind and approachable person and effectively answers student questions. Would definitely recommend!
For a technical writing course, Monika provides slides and resources which are filled with great information, but extremely difficult to navigate, and provides no big-picture examples, which are important for this kind of course. (To get an idea of proper formatting, for example)
Monika Smith is a nice enough lady, I respect her as a person but her class drained out all the possible life left inside of my body. Every class. Without fail. Did not engage students, very bland. Found it hard to learn with her. But she's sweet...
Monika is excellent at what she does. There was no getting around the boring content of 135, but she provided a step by step approach to each of the large assignments in the class. This was helpful because by the time you had to sit down and write, she had provided all of the tools, and lots of the content was already completed in class.
Monika is the most boring prof you will ever have. Her slides are impossible to understand! However, going to her office hours you see a whole new side to her. She is kind, and caring and gives re-writes if needed. it is worth sitting through her lectures and hating every moment of it because you will get a grade you deserve and are happy with
For a very boring class Monika fits right it, often hard to get through her whole class, she often goes off about stuff that has no correlation to the class and barely teaches anything, her marking rubrics are unclear and often do not even make sense after you receive your mark. Would recommend avoiding her as a prof if possible.
Awful teacher with useless lectures that do not correlate with anything for marks. Worst teacher I have had in any school system ever would recommend trying to bypass having her as a teacher at all costs. Complete waste of a semester as I do not believe I learned anything with her as a teacher. Would rather have been taught by a dry napkin.
worst teacher I have ever had, was the longest semester of all time. I believe I somehow lost knowledge in this class. marking made no sense.
Monika is a super sweet lady with the best intentions. She puts in more effort to engage her students than I have seen from any other professor so far. She tries very hard to get to know her students and makes sure that everyone always knows what to do. Feedback is always positive and she means the best with everything.
Very nice but i found her lectures very boring and not useful for the content. You could get by without attending the lectures and just doing the work.
Great teacher. She puts a lot of effort into written feedback which is super helpful. Very sweet and understanding.
Monika's grading criteria do not make any sense. Like each item on the rubric she gave us is "Excellent", but the overall is "Good". No grades for discussion posts and attending. And she gives equal grades to team members, so whether or not you contribute a lot, your grades are the same
Overall she was a pretty good prof. She is a tough grader but leaves a ton of feedback, giving you many opportunities to improve. The workload was fairly light despite the course being condensed.
I would try to get someone else.
This teacher is the worst teacher I've ever had. Her lectures have nothing to do with the assignments and she drags on for the entire 80 minute lecture about random gibberish. Class is a waste of time and energy and her marking is terrible. Take pretty much any other instructor.
Beside the teammates affecting the grade attending the course as a whole is just depressing. I have tried my best anywan
Just don't take her
Lectures are completely useless have nothing to do with the assignments. I would literally do the same if i didnt have a teacher and just did the assignments.
If you want to keep sanity take someone else.
Just take someone else. She is one of the hardest markers I have ever had as well as the lectures being useless and boring.
She is not that bad, just do what she asks you to do!
Monika was probably my favourite prof for my first year classes. I appreciated the level of feedback she gave on assignments, and felt she graded very fairly. She also responded quickly to emails which was great. Would definitely recommend.
Comapred to every other section of ENGR 240, no one had as much homework as we did. We have to do like 200 tasks inbetween classes, half of which are some random readings and we have to share in class.
By far the hardest marker I have ever had for an english class. You will be lucky if you get a 80 on a large assignment. The brightspace page is extremely hard to navigate. There are MANY tasks before each class some of which you have to share in class. Compared to other sections ours had the most work by far. Lectures were long useless and boring.
Monika is a great teacher and cares deeply about her students, but her lectures are almost useless to your assignments and her Brightspace page is almost impossible to navigate. Her assignments were also confusing on what she wanted to see (i.e. no clear criteria) and was a tough grader that never gave anybody a grade over a low A.
Alright you prob saw the scary reviews and thought “nah not taking her” same lol. But after her class my opinion flipped. She's a tough grader but super fair if you actually try. Office hours are crazy helpful, she answers even dumb qs. Fast emails, detailed feedback. Put effort and she's honestly one of the best profs.
