She is a very caring professor. But be ready for some pretty difficult quizzes. Other than the quizzes and exams, she's a pretty good professor.

Kind of hard to understand, but you get use to the accent. Overall she teaches the basics of calculus very well.

She is really hard to understand at first, but eventually you get used to her accent you start to understand her. Her exams are really hard, but after the first one you know what to expect and can really prepare for them.
I like her style of caring about the well-being of the class. Academically, you may get many difficult times with the exams and homework problems, but if you don't understand a concept (any ONE person in the class), you just have to raise your hand, and she will gladly slow down and make sure that you understand.
A very fun class. She tries to make it fun and her accents grows on you. Her exams has no surprises. She tells you what is going to be on it and it is. Nothing more. There's extra credit here and there and they usually aren't very hard if you understand the material. If I could take her class again I would.
The class is easy. The stuff is pretty much an overview of what you learned in high school. Some of her methods are confusing. her tests are multiple choice and like 25 questions.
Bad accent, but very nice lady. She doesn't know how to explain very well when she's asked questions, she just repeats herself over and over. when she writes out math she takes a lot of shortcuts so it gets confusing at times. the subject is super easy but I kind of felt like she was making up very weird methods to solve really easy math.
Can hardly understand her when she is trying to teach the class, bad accent. Nice lady overall.
Very funny and nice to listen to. She has an accent but is easy to understand. She takes a lot of shortcuts and the notes for the class aren't very easy to understand, but the tutoring sessions with the TA help a lot. Go to class a lot - sometimes she offers extra credit essays.
Really great teacher makes mathematics easy to understand. She really cares about her students and gives extra credit opportunities to her students. Shes so funny too!
She does have an accent but you can still understand her. Tests were easy. Gave some extra credit points. Some lectures were easy and she posts the notes online. She's also good with communicating with her class, especially thru email.
She is nice and caring. Blah. She assigns the hardest problems; her tests are too conceptual, and are more a derivation of theorems and proofs than actual computations. You can do book problems, and feel test ready, but you'll see much harder test problems. To pass you have to make sure you know the ins and outs of the material. Her class = :(
Decent teacher but her accent takes a while to get used to. Tests were difficult but not if you studied well, tells students exactly what's on the tests w/practice problems.
Her exams are really really hard. Be prepared to study a lot for this class. However, she is actually really nice and will help you a lot if you ask for it.
she is HILLARIOUS. but you cant understand her. her tests are hard.
She has a good sense of humor but you can't understand her at all! Its good because there is no text book..just note printouts...and no homework to turn in. Her tests are "supposed" to be easy but they weren't for me...but she scores her tests in the best interest to give you the best grade.
she's super funny but i had an extremely hard time understanding her. if you wanna have a good laugh, take this class. if you wanna learn math, take a different teacher.
Didn't go to any of the lectures, just the tests. Drops the lowest test grade. Completely skipped a test because I already had A's on all the other ones. Easiest class ever!
funny. finds songs online and tries to have the class attempt it. once was the "MATH"arena (macarena). Makes a few mistakes sometimes. But we're all human. she drops lowest test score. and grades on curve.
The class material isn't difficult, but she is very hard to understand and is overall a poor educator. She doesn't explain how to solve problems or explain anything at all really. I highly recommend you not to take her for this class. She makes an intro class much more difficult than it should be.
Im your average B-C student. She's a kook but she's classic. Has an accent which can be hard to understand but who listens to her anyway? Easiest math class ever! 5 of 7 special lectures (which are easy to write!) 4 exams (drops lowest exam score, only 3 count for grade) and a final exam. VERY boring, pretty much taught myself this class.
I barely understood what she was discussing during class but the 5 lecture reports that we have to do helped me maintain a B. Its cool that we don't have a textbook either
She doesn't explain any problems. She just solves them and expects you to know how she got there. Terrible, terrible lecturer. I taught myself everything the entire semester. Don't take her if you have a choice.
She is about as comprehensible as a meat grinder. This instructor should not be teaching remedial math, she really should not even be an instructor at all. She expects the students to already know how to do everything, when she should be focusing on teaching us the basics again. That is the point of remedial math, isn't it?
i never understood what she was talking about during lectures. only some things were understandable, maybe if you do the hw before class then you'll probably understand her and do well on the exams. Only take her class if its a last resort
She's a little hard to understand with her accent, but she's really passionate about math. The class overall was pretty easy. It's basically everything you've learned all throughout high school. It's also a plus that there's no textbook! I admit however, I hardly went to class... but it's an easy A.
makes concepts that were easy in high school seem much more complicated than they need to be. just show up for exams.
She is a horrible teacher. I understand there aren't many Math professors available.. so she might be mandatory.. if so.. go see the T.A. That was the only way I passed this class, &I aced Math all through highschool. She is very confusing and makes little to NO sense! Going to class is a waste of time, show up for exams!
If you have to do math 100 take Chyba. She is hard to understand and can be a little unorganized with her notes. But she is the best option that I know of.Clas is painful and I did really well once I stoped going to class
Has a very strong accent so it's hard to understand her sometimes. I'd recommend you take her class over the other math 100 classes though. Overall, nice person and tests are easy with a little studying.
if u did not get allday for the fall 09, dont panic. this professor will give u the understanding you need to enhance your knowledge in calculus. Besides, she literally knows the material quite well unlike someone.... U I S..
Teacher is very confusing. Sometimes hard to understand with her accent. Most of the time we're trying to understand the same concept we've been going over. I took Calc in High School, but I got a B in her class. She jumps around alot and the other teacher is boring.
She is a great person, but a horrible teacher. She is very knowledgeable, but doesnt explain well. She makes a lot of mistakes, and skips steps to get to the answer. Worst thing she ever said: "just stare at the problem and the answer will come to you." worst thing to say in a math class! in case you havent figured yet, i dont recommend her.
Honestly one of the worst teachers i have ever had. Barely speaks english, makes tremendous mistakes, and doesnt even use a book. The material is easy but you might as well not go to class because this teacher is like listening to an illiterate foreignor try to teach. Awful!!!
Hands down the worst teacher. Her accent is really rough and what you read in the textbook has nothing to do with class. If you do homework or study out of the book instead of listening to her talk, you would do better. Pointless, you fail because you can't answer the exam questions because she does not teach you how to answer it.
Avoid this class at all costs if you possibly can. Her thick accent does not help and you definitely will not learn math from this.
she has a very thick accent. doesnt explain anything too well. you have to write essays for math. ESSAYS. like dude, its a math class. hard class. barely passed. good luck to non math majors
Easy A. The class is super boring though. I didn't even bother listening to her because her accent is really strong. For exams she gives you past exams to study and some of those questions are on the actual exams. Also, her two page single spaced special lecture papers were horrible to write. Do extra credit:)
Terrible! terrible! Teacher!! I do not understand what she's explaining in class.. Does not complete example problems on the board! Do not take her if you are a person who does not like math!
Very unclear, so much that it is difficult to understanding what she is trying to say sometimes. Gives some problems every now and then to work on at home but never requires it to be turned in. 5 tests not including the final and she drops your worst score. One of the most boring classes I've ever taken
Online book, 5 multiple choice exams. Good mathematician, not so good teacher. She has an accent (French, if you're curious) that is somewhat difficult to get past, but it's really the manner in which she teaches that's the problem. When demonstrating how to solve a problem, she will skip steps in the process. The extra tutoring is a life saver.
TERRIBLE TEACHER! Do not take this class. She has a really bad accent which makes her hard to understand and she doesn't write out all the steps for how to complete the problem out on the board. Very confusing. The only good thing is I skipped class every day for the past months and still received an A because her exams are all multiple choice.
She tries hard to make the class interesting. Makes math less boring. Tests are fair and extra credit options available.
The class itself is manageable, however, I think most students don't give her a chance due to her accent. The content itself isn't bad, the review sessions are extremely helpful, she provides practice exams (and some of the questions there are usually asked in the real exams), and offers so many extra credit opportunities.
A lot of people criticize her accent, however I found her easy to understand. IPads were used in class in place of textbooks and many problems were done in class each day so that everyone understands the material. Monique also made the class fun and interesting with presentations on how math is used in things like art and science. She is also nice!
Chyba's main issue is that she is much too intelligent for MATH 101. She goes over complicated proofing as opposed to utilizing equations to solve problems. So while she makes the class seem hard, exams are a breeze. Never went to class, got A+. However, she is nice and easy to hear during class.
She makes really simple algebra and geometry concepts really hard to understand. She's not very good at explaining and words the tests in a weird way. This class is very basic stuff that you should've learned in high school so it should be easy, if not she gives out TONS of extra credit so if you get bad grades on a few test you can still get an A.
She's a really bad teacher. She doesn't explain homework or tests. If you go to the review sessions with her T.A. Right before a test you'll learn more than you ever would with her. She gives stupid lectures about stuff that doesn't have to do with the lesson and then throws questions from the lecture into the test. She's an awful teacher
Yes, she has a French accent, but it is easily understood once you get used to it. She is passionate about math and really wants the students to succeed. She gives out a lot of extra credit and if you do her exam reviews you should ace the class (most questions are right off the study guide). She drops your worst test grade and is a great teacher.
Lectures are hard to follow at times. However, she is very kind and willing to help if you seek it yourself.
Prof Chyba is a great lecturer. She shows you examples of what you need to know and skips over the mechanical work. She shares the history and gives inspirational talks about why we should learn the material. The class was tough but she wants you to pass. She offers many extra credit opportunities.
I hate math but she is a really good teacher. Beware she does have a heavy accent so make sure you can understand her. The class is pretty easy if you need a math credit and aren't good at it like me. She's super smart and helpful. The lectures are all posted online so if you don't want to go to class it's not a big deal. Don't miss test days!
The content she goes over in this class are stuff I went over in middle school. The material was very easy, considering that I took advanced math in high school and didn't take a placement test. YOU DO NOT NEED A TEXTBOOK ONLY THE ACCESS CODE WHICH YOU COULD BUY ONLINE. Attend the recitations and you will be fine. Think Polish accent.
High school math. She tries her best to make math fun for everyone. Never used the online book, but required for an access code on Pearson. The slides are available on Laulima and the notes are dumbed down. Easy homework with unlimited tries. Recitation is every week and a great portion of your grade. TAs are there to help complete the worksheets.
She has a thick accent if that distracts you from learning. She is not a bad teacher. But very easy class to pass. Open tests. I personally have dyscalculia so I dread taking math courses but this class was even easily passed by me with an A+. Just do the work.
She is a decent lecturer, and her tests are definitely very hard but she wants you to succeed. She wants people to love math and sometimes people don't see her perspective. She is very helpful, and always willing to help in office hours and on her own time. Although this class was very hard, I learned a lot and she was very fair in the grading.
No homework, but recitations (classwork) were expected to be finished before class ended, however got more lenient and had about a two hour extention after class. During class, you're put into breakout rooms and have to finish the worksheet then scan it to turn it in. Quizzes were fairly easy and lots of extra credit opportuinities are given.
Her class is simple. No hw. Attend class, complete a worksheet with your group, and go home. She gives you a lot of opportunities to makeup your assignments and extra credit. 5 quizzes and 3 midterms. Fairly easy if you review the correct worksheets and study the notes she posts on Laulima. Overall, she is caring and does all she can to help you.
Math 100 is very basic Mathematics. There is no need to "study" as long as you listen to what is reviewed during recitations. Dr. Chyba gives a lot of extra credit and is reasonable with workload; she understands the stresses of COVID-19. Majority of this course is taught by TA's, who are very kind and helpful. Participate, and you will do great!
Math isn't my strongest, so I had to have my friend help me with most of the class work; didnt help that the work was boring and note slides lacked some clarity. Prof Chyba wasn't even teaching our class, it was the TA; only saw her maybe 3 times the semester. Breakout groups were awkward, but theyre worth it to get the answers and/or ask questions
She's very caring and gives you several opportunities to succeed. If you didn't like her class, chances are you don't like putting in a lot of work. Math courses are always hard, but she used applicable real-life examples in problems and was always very encouraging. If your biggest qualm is her accent, you're disregarding all the good she does.
I hate math, but I actually liked this class. All the math done was very practical. Her accent makes her a bit hard to understand, but it's not too big of a deal. Definitely recommend.
Super knowledgeable and nice. Gave lots of extra credit opportunities. Really wants everyone to do good.
Loved Professor Chyba! Tests are tough, but she gives a lot of extra credit to make up for it. Would take it again.
Literally do not take Math 100 unless you have to. The professor seems like she HATES teaching this class. She tried to change how recitations were graded (participation or just worksheet submission) TWICE during the middle of the semester. She also stopped uploading all the powerpoints to laulima because she's mad students weren't attending lect.
Attendance was NOT mandatory, but started taking attendance halfway through the semester because students weren't showing up. She didn't want students to e-mail her questions because she had "too many students." It was mainly the TA and LAs teaching the class. The only good thing about this class was that she provided a ton of extra credit.
Lectures almost never related to the material. The course was solely taught by the TA's and LA's, as she was never there. Quizzes are easy, being 3 questions total. Tests are also easy (6-8 questions) She began marking attendance at random points halfway the semester as nobody came to class. The one redeeming quality is the amount of extra credit.
I liked how there was so much extra credit. I ended the semester with basically a 110%. Very easy as long as you do the homework. I thought the way it was graded was weird but I ended with a good grade, so I wasn't going to complain. Lectures did not always match what you did in the recitations and that is probably why people skipped. Easy A.
Her lectures were almost useless unless it regarded important dates. Its recitations twice were taught by TA/RA's and they honestly taught way more and better than the actual prof. Would 100% not rec prof
I think that she was a good professor. While a lot of the time she was hard to understand, she was understanding of when situations happened. She earned a lot of my respect based off the leniency and understanding she had. There are two things in each subject dropped at the end of the semester plus LOTS of extra credit.
Dr.Chyba is one of those professors who genuinely wants to see her students succeed. She offers many extra credit opportunities making it rare to fail her class. Math is my weakest subject but I managed to pass with a 103%. Lectures are lowkey useless, TA's in recitation help material easy to understand. Be ready to talk to people for short answers
I think that math is my strongest subject so I didn't really struggle in this class. Professor Chyba genuinely wants her students to succeed and tries her best to help them pass her class. For instance, she gives a lot of extra credit opportunities. I respect her for that. Also, the recitations helped me a lot with understanding the material.
The professor is a nice person. The lectures, however, are not super special. I don't think it's always mandatory to go to the lectures/stay the whole way unless there's a worksheet. If there's a worksheet on lecture days, do them. It's extra credit. There are other extra credit opportunities too! The main thing is the amazing, more helpful TA's!
This professor is pretty strict and honestly doesn't teach well at all. There's almost no point of going to her lectures because you're going to have to teach it to yourself anyways. The TA's are good though so don't skip those classes.
The recitations are run by TAs and lectures are presented by Monique. The lectures could be dull at times, but attendance is graded when there's a worksheet. A lot of the work in recitations was done in groups, so it wasn't too difficult. There were a lot of extra credit opportunities in class, so as long as you put in effort, it's easy to succeed!
The class itself is easy to pass with minimal homework. Professor has accent, tries to be interactive in lecture but explanations feel convoluted. Worksheets always end up being more complicated than lecture. Wording on worksheets and quizzes are very unclear.
tbh i could never understand what she was saying because of the thick accent. But the math part... she was ok at teaching. The assignments were just annoying as you only could do them the day of at 12 and due that same night. The word problems are sometimes so diffucult to understand, its like weird kine English. But math itself was pretty light.
Professor is good. Worksheets feel like busy work. Filler class of all time.
The professor has a heavy accent. Attendance was not mandatory but attendance was later made into extra credit. The professor dropped 2 lowest worksheet scores and 2 lowest quizzes. The worksheets took a while to do and was due on the same day. The quizzes were easy and only took 5 minutes. Take this class for an easy A.
I took this class as a prerequisite and HIGHLY recommend. Professor Chyba is sweet and funny, starts lectures with music videos, and offers LOTS of extra credit. Multiple choice quizzes are easy (lowest 2 dropped). Worksheets are easy and leniently graded (lowest 2 dropped). Overall an easy class, fun teacher, and easy A (I ended with a 116.02%)!
