I don' recommend taking this class with her. This was supposed to be a fun class, since it was recl, but it wasn't. There were a lot of essays and assignments... She was not at all clear on the assignments. Left students confused. Don't take this class with her. TAke it with another professor!
I hate RECL 10!!! if you are the kind of person that likes to explore your inner feelings you should take this class, otherwise don't!
I absoultely dispises her. Please do not ever even think about taking this class with her, there are definte better choices out there.Simply, she just cannot teach. If you wanna be treated like a middle school kid, then this class is for you.Dodge this class at all cost, you will not regret it,and that means every student at SJSU!
Do not take this class.Duphily is a stubborn teacher who will not hear other judgements. It's either her way or the highway. Her way of teaching=no fun at all.Don't take this class with her.Repeat, try another professor if you must take this for GE.She might seem like a nice professor at first, but soon you'll regret it.
Monique is a very structured teacher. She does everything according to the greensheets. She's a great person... The class was ok.
recl 10 wasn't as fun as it was a couple semesters ago... the department changed the structure of the class entirely. it's not fun and games like it used to be. You are required to read two books. There are a bunch of essays.you are required to go to two skool events. Also you are required to do 8hrs of community service & there's a presentation.
she's a pretty hard grader. there are lots of essays. you are required to do community service and do a 30 minute presentation about it. class was pretty boring =p
the person who posted before me is an idiot.. Monique should not be fired. She's a good teacher that is passionate about what she does... she's fairly new.. the class is a little tough, but hey it's college, what do u expect? There is a lot of work and at the end there's a 30 min group presentation.
shes pretty chill about stuff, but def wont take late work. helpful in going over papers with you before you turn them in. explains things clearly. will spend the class time talking about whatever, if the class or her feels like something needs to be dicussed. 30 min pres at the end isnt hard if your group doesnt suck.
Prof. Duphily is an outstanding instructor, you want to learn about how to have a meaningful life this is the class. She's extremely helpful, and gracious to move deadlines around when she could tell it was needed. The class criteria is already laid out for this program, she does an excellent job coaching the students! Take this class with her!
This was Monique's first semester teaching a college course and she did a great job. I never would've known she was never taught a college course until she told us. The class is very structured. There were a few essays, 2 campus events you had to go to, and a group presentation at the end.
Worst Professor i ever had, her class was suppose to be fun but instead it was filled with BS assignments and presentations. She accused me of being dishonest about my feelings, but graded students highly if they made up a story about how enlightened they became b/c of her.She knows the class is useless,so she trys to makes it a psuedo academic-hard
Okay Rec 10 is supposed to be an easy class...She MADE it difficult. If that doesn't say enough...I had a 89.998% and she gave me a B! Not fair...
Really different
This teacher is actually a very nice likable teacher always has a smile on her face. The class on the other hand is a bust. Just go to class occasionally to get kind of whats going on, and you should be fine. Sadly i missed a peer editing day that dropped me down 15% which is crazy.Nothing should be worth that much. Other than that decent teacher
Monique was a wonderful instructor. She always came to class with a smile and cared very much for her students. For those who think Rec 10 is an easy class, think again. There is no such thing. Hard work pays off! I would take another class with Monique.

She's really nice and very helpful. The course work was very simple.
easiest class, but it is pure busy work so the assignments are easy but really time consuming. Duphily is a nice teacher and her tests are straightforward and stick to the book. I enjoyed the class and it is very different but in a good way.
easy clas but she gives way too much busy work and pointless papers. tedious class. take it to get a good grade.
OK if you agree with everything this teacher teaches you will love her. If you don't agree with her she will get very arrogant with you. She smiles but doesn't really care about you. The assignments force you to lie about how you have been so enlightened by her course. Do not take this class unless you describe yourself as Ecospiritual
very friendly and helpfull. a few large projects/assignment, but very clear on all assignments. an overall fun teacher.
I enjoyed her class. SHe gives a lot of tedious assignments and papers but they're not too bad as long as you stay on top of them. Study guides from eboard relate directly to what she tests on and she grades very easy. I got no less than an A on all assignments. She is always very thorough and open to questions. I highly recommend her!
The assignments are simple but time consuming. You need the books to study for the test and sometimes for in class activities. Participation counts so that means attendance counts. Monique is friendly & knows her subject well. This class takes effort if you want an A. And if you actually want to learn, be open-minded and try new things!
Another wonderful person/professor at SJSU!!! Her creating a meaningful life class is easy and straight forward, she has a few large assignments but they are NOT hard! Most assignments are really simple...like "show and tell day"! Monique is very helpful and easy to talk with! My favorite class from last semester!
Her class is so pointless. Most of what she teaches is completely useless. Every chapter is basically a different theory on leisure. TO BE HONEST, it's sad that she even thinks her class is worth teaching. This class is easy if you can stay awake or remotely interested. There are MANY other EASY AND USEFUL GE classes to take rather than this one.
Lots of busy work and little assignments. The projects that she assigns are worth as much as the points given for showing up to class when there is a guest speaker. If I didn't agree with her beliefs she would give me a poor grade which lead to most people BSing their papers. Overall not a great teacher.
Dont need to go to class. Projects are pointless and no one really does them unless they dont have anything to do. She is a cool and chill teacher but pointless class. Take it tho for a GE unit.
She marks you down on assignments if you don't agree with her theories of "leading a meaningful life".For example, she marked off points on my assignment because my childhood didn't match with her views of how a person's childhood should be like.I thought it'd be an interesting class. It'd probably be if she wasn't the professor.
She is a lop-sided professor. What I mean by that is she grades with a lot of opinion and bias. I suggest you push yourself over before you enter the class, because it's not what you value, but what she values. She also doesn't keep track of grades very well. And last but not least take another professor if you can.
The most annoying teacher ever. She takes this DUMB class way too seriously. Do not take her. Such a pointless class.
Other HRTM classes read meaningful books, watch movies, and get close with their classmates. By the end of the semester, I only new a COUPLE new people in class. She is a good person and teacher, but not for HRTM. All she assigns is ESSAYS! This class is fun, but with another professor.
This could be a very interesting class, but Professor Duphily is extremely bias and tough. She makes you write about 4 essays throughout the semester. There were few other activities. Her opinions get in the way of the students exploring their meaningful lives. Boring class.
Do not take this professor for 100w. We had to stick to a single topic for the whole semester, which became a nightmare. There are other professors that are way better and more helpful, and that will help you write things that are actually useful. No resume writing in this class.
TAKE THIS CLASS ONLINE.It is SO easy, and Monique is very clear on what she wants and she is quick to respond to any questions. Stay on top of your assignments and you'll be fine. Do the study guides for the tests and the tests will be easy. Monique is super nice and makes the class interesting. Highly recommend taking her class online! Easy A.
My section was fully online=convenient. Follow her directions on assignments and you should have no trouble receiving full credit. You will need the book. There are 2 exams and 1 final exam. Do the study guides and be sure to at least skim the chapters to get the general idea before starting the exams (they are timed, 60 mins) Easy area E GE class.
Very fun easy class. Only met once a week and had to do simple assignments via Canvas. Had a couple short field trips, and class was mostly presentations from guest speakers and your small groups. You actually meet new people in this class and learn things about creating a meaningful life. Highly recommend this GE Area E class.
Professor Duphily is there to help you when you ask her questions. However, I am not really a fond of the group assignments since there were some parts of one group assignment that were confusing. If you are planning to take this class, just remember there's projects and lots of reading. Overall, this class is not that hard.
The textbook we read is very tedious. She has us do 2 group projects with classmates in real life and good luck to you if you have lazy partners, because it's confusing what she wants from us. Her tests have extremely specific questions, but you'll be fine if it's an online class. Don't ask her questions until you've looked through all resources.
She was a fairly good teacher on the whole. My one complaint is that her grading was so slow. I wish she would grade in a more timely manor.
Even though there she made slides for the class to understand the topics better, there are some things that I wished she had specifically stated in her rubric. She does not grades some of the assignments on time, but if you are considering taking her class, I recommend to read the book also.
For being an Area E class, this class was very demanding. The assignments are easy, but she grades extremely hard for everything (paper, powerpoint, and projects-even discussions). I barely got an A working my butt off.
She was a very nice person, and made a huge difference in my passing of the class. Instruction may at times seem vague, and the grading may lag occasionally, but overall the class was pretty good. Overall, I felt like Durphilly genuinely cares, and will work with you to ensure you pass her class,
Do not take this professor for 100w.
It was a very interactive online class. There were weekly assignments due on Wednesday and agenda for next week posted on Thursday. Assignments were graded on a timely manner. She gives good feedback on your writing and leaves questions that you can look into versus imposing herself on your writing. She was very flexible and was very understanding
Do not take her for 100W she thinks she helping by giving you a lot of work but she's making things way more difficult then they need to be. Feels like I'm taking a really difficult English class. Class should be 5 units for all the work involved.
Duphily's "online" class requires that students meet up and conduct group projects together. She requires photo proof and expects you to do writeups about what good friends you made with the other students. It's like kindergarten with research papers. Discourages students from contacting her for help. The class textbook is also rife with errors.
Two exams, 2 main assignments (2 are group projects), and a video project. The assignment prompts are extremely vague are unclear. The professor is a slow grader and marks down assignments for not meeting requirements that were not clearly stated. Group assignments are messy and unorganized. Expect to know video editing. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS
Avoid her at all costs. Her instructions for every assignment are unclear, and confusing. When grading assignments, she will mark you down and be extremely critical of it if is different from her opinion or views. I had to change the topic of a paper because I knew I would get marked down since my view on the topic was opposite of hers. Awful.
Great for it being an online course. Always left very helpful feedback on each assignment. Assignments build upon each other, which is helpful for the final paper. Assignments due each week, which is typical for 100w. Only thing I didn't like was the group project, which was tough to do online. I did much better on individual assignments.
Try to take it with someone else. Way to much homework.
I had to take online classes because I'm interning far away from campus. This class seemed like a good fit but I don't think she understands how to run an online class. Making people get together in person and form groups doesn't work for most people who are taking an online class and the bulk of the entire class is group projects. Get it together.
A lot of people give her a bad rating but Monique is actually a really good 100w teacher. She takes a while to grade stuff yes, but she's not a hard grader by any means. Do the work, follow APA and you'll be fine. If you have any questions or struggle with writing like I did go to her for help and she's amazing. She gives extra credit too!
Monique was a fantastic teacher and I was able to glean a lot from her class. Her papers and homework do build upon each other and help you eventually write your final paper. Monique also gives excellent feedback to help her students learn and to write well. To get an "A" read carefully follow each rubric, learn APA, and finish all your homework.
I was scared to take Monique because of some of the reviews below but turns out she is amazing. She makes the online class very interactive and truly cares about improving your writing. You can get an A if you follow her rubric,APA guidelines, and the schedule she posts weekly. I used to DREAD writing, but after this class I don't mind it!
Prof. M. Duphily has a strong opinion on every topic she talks about, so really be careful of what you say or write your paper. Her assignment is very unclear and very pacific. Lectures are boring. Be ready for QFR. I do not recommend taking her class, if you want a chill class, I bet other teachers are way better.
I have never been more frustrated in a class in my entire life. Professor Duphily has a really strong opinion, which should be a good thing, but as a professor, it was weird to see how she wouldn't be opened to new perspectives brought by the students. There is a group project and she is very picky about how she wants you to work. Do not recommend.
HORRIBLE at returning grades! This online class is very hard for being only 3 units. I had a ton of assignments, I even had to focus more of my time in this class than in any of my other core courses. This professor was not helpful and always referred us to Google if we had any questions regarding posting things a certain way on the online "Canvas"
Ridiculously slow grader, took over 2 months to grade projects. Requires a lot of work to be done. I spent more time on this 3 unit class than I did in the 4 other classes I was taking. Participation is required.
Good prof. She's kind and caring, has a very optimistic and spiritual outlook on life. Very positive attitude. Only 2 books are required for class. Both are under $10. This class implements you to get out of your comfort zone. Fun and creative projects throughout the course. Complete all work and you'll get an A.
She assigns a lot of assignments (once a week) but they are merely free points if you take even 15 20 min of your day to do them. She is extremely lenient on grading and finals and midterms are not worth as much as many other classes, so if you do well on your typical/normal assignments this might be the most free A you can ever get.
Overall the teacher did not really teach any material. She made power points directly from the information from the book and just read off the slides. Theres a group project where you receive a group grade, rather than an individual grade. She is also a tough grader -- if she does not agree with you opinion your grade will suffer.
Monique is thorough, organized, and a fun professor. She provides you with the tools you need to succeed but she definitely makes you work for the grade. There are a lot of assignments but it is definitely manageable if you plan efficiently. There are several group projects, but you are able to do them remotely which makes it easier. Great class!
Her assignments are relatively easy, but they're barely worth anything. Getting an A on those individual assignments won't do much for you overall. She focuses on group projects and she wants it done a specific way, however, her instructions are too broad. You can only hope you get a semi-good group because if not, then your grade suffers.
If you struggle with English, don't take online. Be ready to put in TIME & WORK. Can be a tough grader but follow rubrics to detail & you'll be good, I didn't do well on 1st assignment, but after looking at rubrics I got A's. One group project, offers extra credit, may accept late assignments, build interest & email with her, she will help!
DO NOT take a class with Monique. She is lazy and doesn't know how to teach. She has no reason to grade so tough. She assigns 45 question QUIZZES using lockdown browsers.... Don't try to reach out to her over the weekend either because she won't respond. I only have this class once a week but I would rather die than attend her class.
Whatever you do, don't take this class. It's extremely meticulous and very lecture heavy. Instructions are very broad and she doesn't answer your questions. Her work load requires you to do breathing activities everyday 10-20min a day and you cant miss it because she asks for proof. Very boring, and has attitude when she emails back. no thanks!
DO NOT take her unless you like wasting your time. She'll mark you down for EVERYTHING and if you have a question, you are better off asking a friend or figuring it out yourself because her email replies are NONSENSE. She will tell you to just look at her instructions like ??? Um, we are emailing you because your instructions are unclear..... TRUST
There are some classes where Monique is the only professor, but I'd just drop out if I were you. I have never given a professor negative ratings before, but this creature is something else. How is she still a professor? No one knows. Her assignments are so confusing and extra, but just make sure to email her for help because it works! You wish.
She made me consider dropping out of school while taking her class. I had to take her since she was the only professor available so if you are in the same situation good luck because you won't learn anything. Wish I could get a refund from my tuition and get my time back because this class was a big waste of my time. RIP
If you are on this page, I would advise you to do yourself a favor and don't even think about taking a class with Monique. It's not worth it. Her syllabus quiz has no reason to be 20 questions and to be taken with a lockdown browser + webcams. If that doesn't tell you enough about her FIRST assignment, good luck with any of her other assignments.
Shes good
THE WORST! Dont waste your time! We have multiple POINTLESS quizzes on APA using lockdown + webcams. Alot of the questions are confusing. She grades VERY tough and stresses APA. She doesn't answer her email over the weekend. She claims to be understanding but she doesnt care about her students. Hope they fire her soon. STAY AWAY!!!
she's an okay teacher but honestly it's a lot of homework. If you're planning to take more than 15 units, do not take because it is heavy as it demands a lot of attention and is time consuming. She is super specific about her APA citations but can be nice in terms of extensions.
I'm not even done with the semester yet I have so much to say about Miss Monique here. She's the only professor for some classes so I have no other option than to take her. She assigns 45 point QUIZZES+lockdown & gives such vague instructions for HW. This class is useless and such a waste of time. I'm surprised she's still a professor here. GL yall
She wasn't very clear about grading criteria during the semester at all. There were so many assignments and not enough direction. This class was completely online so you'd expect more info to be available, but I felt like I had to figure it out. She does give great feedback on papers and will respond to emails if you ask for help though.
only teacher who makes you lockdown browser AND use webcam. Doesnt allow notes or books during quizzes, so you better memorize every word in the chapter. Expects you to know APA off the bat or learn quickly. SJSU needs someone else to teach this class
makes the class more difficult than it needs to be. Never had a professor ever require the respondus webcam to be on during quizes. Especially when the quizes are on APA format and the reading, you are not allowed any notes. You better memorize every detail in the reading
Although the professor seems very passionate and knowledgeable in her field, she requires too much out of the students for a writing course. Respondus WITH webcam is required to take open-note APA quizzes and the questions are finicky for no reason. You really have to watch out for your grade because of the quizzes and exams.
This class is so easy if you just participate and turn your work in on time. As long as you are answering the questions she asks in your writing and can defend your claims then she will give you a good grade. She gives feedback to pretty much everything and is really helpful.
Too much work. I spend more time on this class than all the rest combined.
Her class is too demanding for students who have to balance school, work, and other responsibilities. takes a long time to grade and barely any feedback with lots of points marked down. many papers and lockdown browser quizzes every week. Her lectures aren't helpful either. Her class is a big red flag, if you have the choice, don't take her.
Expect to get a B in this course unless you want to dedicate all your time to this one course. She takes a while to grade which can be frustrating because all the assignments build off of each other but overall the course wasn't too bad. You get a week to do each assignment and the quizzes can be annoying but they aren't impossible.
If you want to experience hell, take her class. She is really demanding and you have to get your pockets ready because she expects you all to spend more than $200. She doesn't have any spare equipment so you either buy it or you fail. Don't even try reaching out, she is not helping.
If you have capacity to understand her assignments in depth and write good papers- you will be fine. She wants her students to succeed and do well. She gives great feedback and allows for multiple resubmissions for assignments if it means it will benefit you and your future papers. Shes really nice and very responsive.
A non-native english speaking student's experience: Pr Duphily was really kind and encouraging, which helped me survived the class. Prepare to put A LOT of your time writing and researching. Clear but lengthy criteria, if you follow instructions, you should be fine. Tests were tricky and time-consuming. I honestly gave up half way but got a B
Coursework is manageable but for a slow grader, she kind of expects a lot from you for an online class. If you can take RECL10 in person, I recommend Philrene Toney instead because Duphily assigns far more busy work.
I had Recl10 with professor Duphily which is asynchronous. She uploads weekly modules with instructions every Monday and her assignments are pretty straightforward. 1 book is required and another is provided via pdf. She is pretty chill and easily accessible if you have any questions. Fun class!
Professor Duphily is very educated in her profession but is a very tough teacher. At the time of taking her class I was struggling heavily with my mental health and taking this course with her only made it worse. English writing courses are ones I typically enjoy, but she gives tough and harsh criticism and expects flawless work. I had to withdraw.
This class was asynchronous and Ms. Duphily was very organized in keeping Canvas updated and responding to emails. I liked the content and learned a lot (lots of psychology themes which made it interesting). There is a good amount of work assigned each week, so just make sure to keep up. There was no final, just a project. Overall, cool class.
I've had Professor Duphily for all 3 of her courses - PH-15, RECL-10 which were both easy busy work, and am taking 100W. For 100W, be prepared for a lot of research, reading, prep, writing, and weekly confusing quizzes on APA formatting. She's very nitpicky on what she wants, but she does give feedback and will try and help you.
Takes ages to grade papers and assignments. APA quizzes are impossible to pass, with an average of 60% on quizzes. Unnecessarily hard. Take Naomi Williams instead.
Every week she would do upcoming weekly assignments and papers that are very confusing to understand. I do not feel like she is effective in guiding the class, she says she does not want to give us too much stress, but she is fake about that for sure. Do not take this class if you have the option to take another professor.
I despise her grading. Most difficult quizzes I have ever taken and I've taken micro bio, chem 1A, physio, and calc. Switched to public health expecting this to be easy and this teacher has been the WORST teacher I've ever had. I hope she stops teaching this class otherwise she will continue to get non-stop negative reviews. Be better.
Assigns more work than she can grade. Her incompetency as a teacher affect our mental health. We don't expect a lot from SJSU professors but she has lowered the bar to an all time low. Horrible and shameful.
Grades are incredibly slow so we are unable to receive any feedback. She has graded 1 essay so far back in September and our 4th essay is due in 2 weeks. All essays are built upon each other so it is impossible for us to know if we are doing good or bad. Would not touch any class taught by her with a 10-foot pole.
She gives out lots of big projects, classwork engagement, and only 20 textbook assignments. Not much homework and no final exam or any tests in PH15. Lessons she teaches are worth it and meaningful, always encourages positive lifestyles and mental health. Very understanding as well. Great professor who really wants to inspire her students.
She is an amazing professor and very inspirational. In her class, there are sometimes discussion posts that we must do with other people in the classroom so attending is a MUST, and also she has activity assignments within SJSU that she had made us do as a class, and on go to choose our activities our own time as participation points.
The leisure activities are beneficial in ensuring your life is the best experience. I despised the vagueness in her instructions and she is also very critical on some topics, so be ready to hear what she says. It can get very annoying at times. Overall, it's pretty easy and helpful for your life. But find someone else for this class!
Professor Duphily has high expectations and a strict grading system. Lectures are informative, but expect lots of writing assignments and APA quizzes. Using resources like Unstuck study can help prep for this challenging course.
Don't take if you don't want to participate. She makes you do group stuff and group projects which are just inconvenient. I took this class and I also took Human Life Span (PH) and it was just a lot of busy work. Also why is everything political??? This class, (RECL 10) could be a piece of cake but attendance is pretty mandatory.
Excessive amount of work lol, and not many assignments are actually useful. It's mainly just busy work.
Don't take this course if you're not willing to show up at least 2/3rds of the time, as many classes are mandatory for credit. Lots of small homework assignments that were annoying but pretty manageable. I personally found a lot of the concepts covered enriching.
I was nervous because of her RateMyProfessor reviews, but she's actually really chill. There are lots of slideshows and some tedious McGraw Hill work, but the projects are fun and the class is engaging. She's easy to talk to, understanding with late work, and you'll do fine if you show up, communicate, and stay involved. (PH/RECL-15)
