it's a shame he didn't teach the entire course
Moves really fast, but covers everything well. Haven't met him personally
Very organized presentation of material...tests are fair
really good teacher, def learned a lot from him. he also made it interesting and the test wasn't that bad.
Should never have been chosen to teach an engineering biology class. Could not relate to students.
Very easy to understand. Tests are straight-forward.
Test difficult, but a very intelligent teacher, and a very down-to-earth guy.
Dr. Monette is a tough teacher, but his high demands make you a better student. My BI 555 class demanded a great deal of time and a efficient working knowledge of class material I learned throughout my 4 years at BU. He's a super nice guy outside of class
He's a very good teacher... he goes over the important concepts clearly, slowly, and thoroughly. His tests are challenging but if you keep up with the reading and go to lecture getting a good grade is attainable :-)
Couldnt relate to eng. students. Goes very fast and doesnt understand our most demanding schedule
Sped through matieral...tests VERY difficult
presents info AFTER you've been quizzed on it, yes that's write sometimes you rely on your wits and previous knowledge. way too much reading even during deadline of paper that counts more than a test. do not take this class. good class if taken ALONE
He is very clear about he wants and his part of the test is straight out of his notes.
Condesending to students. Most Boring lectures of my life.
hard class~~~nice prof though...really likes the cell stuff....exam's are kind of hard...slides online and helpful
AWFUL AWFUL lecturer. Go to his class if you want to sleep. He just walks around and talks monotone. His test is hard, study study study...AND HE'S BORING...............
Very quiet voice that puts you to sleep. Explains things ok if you're still conscious but definately doesn't captivate any audiences so u might want to read the book for his section of the course...
he was so boring...it's all about cell membranes...his test are tricky too. make sure you know everything. he likes to but two or three concepts together into one question. read the book, you will probably fall asleep in lecture.
A very challenging course. Lots of memorization required.
Boring class, the lecture is too early. The book is too specific for somebody who doesn't have any cell bio background. the exams are hard, unless you feed yourself with the book at least once a day. good luck!
Boring class, the lecture is too early. The book is too specific for somebody who doesn't have any cell bio background. the exams at 8 in the morning at hard, unless you feed yourself with the book at least once a day. good luck!

Tests are insanely specific and do not necessairly represent the lecture material. Study the book's diagarms and tables, and keep up with the reading.
If you haven't taken AP Bio before you will get smoked by the majority of the class who has already taken it. Lectures are very non-specific, whereas his tests are filled with the most specific multiple choice questions possible.
Three professors taught this class together. He is the best among the three. I wish I had taken this class with him alone over the summer.
Very boring! Speaks in monotone. His entire lecture is on powerpoint. Take the course during the summer...it's way easier than during the year. His tests are all multiple choice..and very tricky. Basically read the textbook and powerpoint notes thoroughly and you should fairly well.
Good lecturer, good at explaining material that might be confusing in the text (pretty confusing text book). Very receptive to questions, but his multiple choice tests have very tricky wording. Do the reading, go to all the classes, study, no reason not to do well.
Pretty good at explaining stuff in lecture, but tests ARE tricky, with confusing wording leading to more than one possible answer... Can be kind of harsh during office hours. I just did not feel like he cared about students, or how they did...
mad ez... i didn't even read the book... took notes... looked at notes once... took the exam and got a 90~!
too easy... i got 92 for studying 2 hrs
i used to hate bio...until i had monnette...good professor...easy exam... i got a 92
decent lecturer, monotone voice though that could put anyone out...the book is very important for the tests, so know your stuff and you'll do well
LECTURES ARE IMPORTANT!!! Take good notes and pay attention and you will be able to tell what's going to be on the test. Didnt read the book or study and got an 87 on his test. GO TO CLASS!!!
Easy tests!
really good teacher, kind of boring, but his slides and his lectures are very helpful. He makes you understand what's going on in cells. Tests are specific and not very hard. Just know your stuff, that's all.
Walks around a lot in lecture but willing to answer questions in huge lecture. Clear slides and explanation.
Hard course because it pretends to not be Cell Bio when it really is, lecture is at 8 am and frequently hard to follow due to the time, does post all Powerpoint online so if you fall asleep you can catch up, tests aren't impossible but aren't easy, don't take this course unless you have to
He is a great prof. Very very dry and monotone but pay attention he takes most of his testing material from lecture. He is really good at explaining concepts and his tests are really straightforward. Print off the slides b4 coming to class. He is a very thorough teacher. Easiest material too!
Exams were very very very hard, pretty much makes it his goal to see how much he can trick you with his wording. Exams very hard, not the material that you learned. Many questions have very very similar answers with one word changed. Very hard exams, studying for hours on end did not help me much
Professor Monette, also known as Detective Monnettee is a good teacher. Unfortunately, I fell asleep during every lecture and could not experience his teachings because he's kinda monotone. But if you wanna learn about alphers and baters and want tests that have choices like "A, B, C, A&B&C, A&B but not C, none of the above" THIS IS YOUR MAN.
He's basically a ****bag, but if you read the book in depth the exam questions come straight from it. Study the book hard and you dont have to pay attention to him
He is horrible, don't take his class. I had the dubious pleasure of having him as an advisor. Luckily, he liked me, but if he doesn't be careful. I can't stand him, he is worse than that b**** in the Bio office
All I gotta say is that it comes in two flavors...alpher and beter. But he's a good lecturer and is definitely better than the expensive textbook that you must read to do well on the exams. Take BI109 instead of PY313 if you're AME.
The lecture materials are very interesting. It feels like the lecture is not out of the book, like most professors do it. Test questions are difficult - know your details!! General concepts won't cut; be prepared to answer questions with specific answers! Really good teacher!
He's interesting in class and teaches the material well. Tests can be somewhat specific, but not bad at all with a little studying. Nice guy.
Where to start.. He's quite a big ****. He just mumbles on for 30 minutes in the picture. Test are hard as anything.Has the worst set up for questions. Worst of BI 108 teachers.
Good professor. Explains concepts and theories pretty well. Tests aren't too difficult if you read the textbook.
He stinks!!! If you can dodge him, do it Most useless teacher in the history of biology! he's lectures are worthless and incredibly boring and dull... all he does is ppt presentations over and over... you pretty much have to memorize the book to get a C+ in his class... what's the point of having a teacher if all you do is memorize the book?
Puts me to sleep every time. Test questions are ridiculously specific, you basically need to memorize every detail from the book
Definitely attend all the classes because if you miss something it is bad. Also you have to read the book and grasp every detail. This class and his teaching is terrible. He can explain the concepts alittle but the exams are terrible. If you can never take a monnette class.
DO NOT TAKE ANY OF HIS CLASSES, THIS GUY IS HORRIBLE AND BELONGS IN A RESEARCH LABORATORY. HE CANT TEACH FOR **** AND HE THINKS HIS POWERPOINTS ARE THE BEST THING EVER. EXAMS ARE RIDICULOUS TO PASS, CLASS AVG WAS 69 FOR THE SEMESTER
Hes pretty good. Some test questions are too specific, though.
good professor. it's hard to pay attention in lecture (but important to) and the class would probably be better if it wasn't a 1.5 hour class on Tues and Thurs. but he is extremely helpful and nice in office hours. tests are difficult but not impossible--reading the book is absolutely imperative.
lectures a bit boring... but perhaps only because they're 1.5 hours long. exams are difficult and sometimes a bit too specific but not impossible--reading the book is absolutely imperative. but monette was extremely helpful and nice in office hours; overall, not a bad professor.
Lectures are horrible. Tests are ridiculously hard. The final was open book and all you could hear was everyone frantically flipping through the book as fast as they could. Don't bother with this class if you don't have to.
Cell bio is just a hard course but it's way interesting. The tests are hard, really specific. Pay attention to what he says in class. He's a good prof, really nice. Sometimes boring. Do whatever you can to stay awake and take good notes. Make sure you do the assigned reading too.
I love bio, but this class drove me insane. It was the most boring class I've ever taken, and the tests were impossible.
Class was interesting sometimes, but material real hard. Make sure you read ALL the chapters VERY thoroughly. It's a hard course and he expects everyone to do a LOTTTT of work, because this course DOES requires a lot of work. Lab isn't too hard. Tests are damn hard. Very helpful prof though, ask him something, he'll be happy to help.
Monnette, as you may see from other reviews, is a HARD teacher. His material is dense. You actually cover EVERY chapter from the book. He expects you to know EVERYTHING he teaches, so know the details. This course is NOT for slackers, 'cause it's a LOTTTTT of work. But at least after this class, you'll be taking easier classes. Trust me =)
Horrible professor. He's monotone, makes stupid jokes and is rude to his students. He teaches nothing but feels the need to make his tests really hard. You can skip lecture and teach yourself what's in the book, he won't be helpful anyway. Don't think because he's general in lecture his exam will ask general questions, learn every detail!
he is a little boring in lecture...but if you pay attention and READ the text WELL, you will do fine on exams. i did well reading the text and attending lectures, but to get an A, definately know the details.
Very nice guy, but all his lectures are based on papers from the 60's and 70's. A little outdated, some may say.
Monette is a great teacher. The material is tough, but he does the best he can with it. Great with power points and puts them online. Curves to an 80 and drops the lowest test. Its hard but he can help you do well
professor monnette is really smart and explains things well BUT sometimes he talks too much about one thing and people fall asleep.. powerpoints are good and clear but u need to read the book too
lectures not helpful, talks generally about topics in class, then asks about picune details on exams, i tried to email him about how to access webct once and he responded that he already said it in lecture. NO HELP WHATSOEVER! HORRIBLE!
I e-mailed asking a question regarding an upcoming test. The response was "You have to be kidding." An A student, paying $44,000 per year, does NOT deserve to be spoken to that way.
I want to say that the test was unfair, but that doesn't even do it justice. I went to class and took notes, read all the assigned chapters and took notes, I studied all day prior to the test, and there was still stuff on the test that I've never seen before. Taught half the material but tested on everything and then some.
I really don't like him, and I have a feeling that he's not very fond of us either.
they don't call it "cell he11" for nothing. Try to take honors(taught by cooper and hausman) if you can because the tests are open book. Test questions are confusing, tricky and very specific. Good luck memorizing 300 pages about detailed mechanisms and proteins for every test.
Pros: He is very clear about what's on the exams. Cons: His philosophy: You need to know everything in the book, and the professor doesn't need to cover everything in the book. He expects you to know everything, including figures, from the textbook in the chapters referred to in class. Time is best spent not in class, but rather reading the book.
I'll admit, you have to know a lot for the tests in this class; still, it's no more than the volume of information you'll have to memorize for the MCAT, which he's clearly preparing us for. The class is manageable if you just keep up with the readings and make sure to take notes along with it. Honestly, the others just need to learn study habits.
Monotone voice puts you right to sleep. Tests were ridiculously hard. you pretty much have to memorize the textbook and his slides to get a C.
The previous raters summed it up. You're better off staying home during lecture so you can just spend your time memorizing the 200 or 300 pages of the textbook necessary for each exam. Professor Monette is horrible!!!
A nightmare class material is interesting but the lecture presentation very unclear and studying for tests was difficult b/c you had to know specific info from 6 chapters to do well on the exams, no review sessions!! The material is difficult but if you have a professor that presents it well everything is ok. The presentation was horrible so not O
I think he is awesome and funny. He is very clear and emphasizes what he wants you to know. Not to mention he has got a wicked awesome boston accent.
Cell Bio is a difficult course regardless of who teaches it but Monette is succinct and encourages student participation despite huge class. Exams are very difficult, not a class to take for fun. Most frustrating thing was FOUR teachers actually teach...
SOOOOOOOOOOO boring. He really knows his stuff but the professor lacks the skills to engage his students. I actually felt bad for him when he would ask questions no one would raise their hands. We were sadly about to pass out from the power-point lectures.
Who cares if people think he's boring! You want to learn and get an A, right? IT'S SUPER TOUGH. You have sooo much reading, around 250 pgs/exam (6-8 chapters), you have to memorize the names of so many different proteins, enzymes, many pathway steps...ah! STAY ON TOP OF THE READING - 60+ pgs/wk - the toughest part! You can't cram a few days before.
Professor Monette is a terrible professor! I am taking this class as a senior. I got A's in micro, cardipulm, and biochem, but I am struggling to get an A in Bio 108, which is ridiculous. He barely covers anything in lecture, but tests you on the entire textbook. Also, his online quizzes frequently have errors in the answer keys.
Nonono. I got a solid A in BI107 (even on the exams with the so-called "hard" professors), I did well in AP Bio, and I am struggling to get a C+/B- in this course. His tests are ridiculous.. the questions are very ambiguous, and even if you memorize the textbook & his slides, it's easy to fail. Good luck, I'm convinced that's what you need to pass.
Very dry lectures, making it difficult to stay interested. Though I went to lecture, it was pretty pointless, since the material he taught was nowhere near as in depth as the material on the tests...you pretty much need to know the book.
He's really bad at engaging the class, but for his tests all you need to do is READ THE TEXTBOOK and you'll be fine.
This class was extremely dull. Monnette just reads off the slides that he posts for the class on the course website. However, do not rely on just the slides for his exams, as the concepts that he puts on the exam are way more in depth. You pretty much need to know the book in order to get an A on the exams.
Monnette is dull as mentioned. He tries to cram so much information into a single exam yet only focuses on a few topics on the actual exam. Not impossible to do well though, just study the slides AND know the text book.
Monette really knows his stuff. Unfortunately however, you don't learn anything from him that you can't learn from the book. You're better off doing the readings and going to office hours if you have doubts. His tests are almost unfairly hard. Questions are VERY specific. Study the textbook and know EVERY detail if you want to do well.
i have to say that i studied for his class for many many hours and i still wasn't able to pull of a satisfying grade.the averages of tests are really low because the tests are extremely detail.even memorizing the whole book wont help u since the questions on the test come from a national database so it doesnt have to do anything with the lecture.
Professor Monnette is one of the worst lecturers. He speaks with a monotone. He repeats what the diagrams say and doesn't add more information. There is no point in attending classes. Reading the textbook is more interesting and helpful. His tests were detailed and questions weren't based on his lessons. I question how he was hired as a professor.
Monette is a GREAT professor. Extremely helpful and his tests are very specific but fair. Cell biology is hard, even in the summer course, so you NEED to keep up with the reading and you need more than one day before the exam. It is not impossible to get in the B+ to A rage by any means; if you work hard, you will get the grade.
Lectures are about as interesting as watching grass grow. He speaks in a monotone voice that puts you right to sleep and does not go into detail during lecture yet tests on very specific material. Must read the textbook in order to do well.
This prof is useless.. tests are extremely specific, yet lecture gives little detail..the only way to succeed in this class is to read the textbook
I like him. He's clear, encourage participation by asking questions at times,a certain amount of jokes.I don't understand why everyone hates him so much maybe bc i personally love cell bio&genetic. He likes to compare/connect knowledge, which is how I study bio.Maybe I'm wrong cuz I got +90% in his part of exams but avg is like 55%
Key to studying is reading the textbook before and after his lectures. His exams are extremely detailed so know every step of each process and the molecular structures of the key players. When he says "the time spent on x topic corresponds with x% of it on the exam" - don't trust him. If he's mentioned it, it WILL be on the exam.
He's extremely boring. He's monotone but at least knows his stuff. His tests are extremely hard. I would HIGHLY recommend getting a tutor or study group together. If you want to pass this class you HAVE TO read the book. He doesn't nearly go into enough detail during lecture for the questions he asks on his test.
Who designed BI108? If it's not Monette then he does not deserve these bad reviews: BI108 does. I think it says it all when you have 50 minutes for 60 MC question on a course whose lack of direction and depth is mind-numbing. People who do well here are good at mindlessly memorising facts so I ask: who exactly is BU trying to 'weed out'?
not my favorite professor, not the worst professor. his portion of BI108 is very structured and well-organized, but the class itself/mc exams are tough. I was expecting a C+ to B for a final grade, and came out with a B+ knowing I could still have done much better if I'd spent more time studying. so overall, it's a tough intro class, but manageable
Worst professor at BU!!! I don't doubt whether he knows biology, but he does not know how to teach! He will mumble through lecture and expect you to remember every little comment he said. His exams are impossible with random details that just aren't even fair. Avoid him at all costs!
Exams were close to impossible. I ate the textbook
Not a great lecturer at all. He really cares, but his lectures were confusing and hard to follow. He divides the material in a very odd way. I was on facebook all of lecture and only did well because I read every page of every chapter out of the textbook. Tests are terrible, asks minute details that just have to be straight memorized. Good luck.
Very clear at explaining concepts. Listen more than take notes and you will do great. He defies terms in a clear manner and further illustrates their use in context of cellular processes, which makes everything much simpler and easy to remember. Great lecturer and very passionate about the subject.
