Great teacher

I really enjoyed the class. The way he told the stories was engaging and fun. While you do have to do the reading and one weekly assignment each week, it was worth it. Make sure you participate, the faster he learns your name the better. His teaching style is relaxed and he will answer as many questions as possible during lecture.

Prof Allen is a very enthusiastic about his subject and it shows in his lectures and dedication to his students. The material was covered both, in class, and by reading various works in mythology. The grading can be a bit ambiguous, but if you read for meaning and connections in the text, you'll be fine. Lectures were interesting and engaging.

I loved this class. Even if you don't like Mythology, Professor Allen makes it interesting, fun, and insightful. His class made me officially want to minor in Classics.

He's really funny. His jokes are lame, but that's what makes them funny. He's absolutely adorable too. He's super nice and really helpful. There is quite a bit of reading as you do a writing assignment every week, but they aren't that bad at all. It's a super fun class that I found to be a lot of fun. He's my favorite professor, by far.

Taking CLAS 230 with Professor Allen was the highlight of my Fall semester. I went into this course with absolutely no background or past knowledge in Greek mythology. By the end of the semester, I felt confident about everything I had learned because Prof. Allen goes above and beyond to help each and every student understand the course material!

He is my favorite professor, who taught the only class I truly enjoyed this semester. He's awesome.

Professor Allen is super chill, entertaining, down to earth, understanding, and fair. He made learning about ancient mythology fun

He always wore awesome pants. He wore leather, bright orange, and thick pin-stripe. It was always a good conversation starter with other people in the class. He also did this thing with his tongue. when he was thinking or picking a student to call on. He would stick his tongue out in hesitation. It made me giggle. Overall, good teacher.

This is a great class with a great professor. He is always willing to answer any questions. Even though the class was a big lecture hall, he took the time to memorize students' names. Class didn't feel like a lecture; it felt like being told a story.

Professor Allen has a contagious passion for the subject. There was never a dull moment in his class. His class was always the highlight of my day. I learned so much in the course! I found the weekly readings to be intriguing. If you don't enjoy reading, this may not be the best fit for you. Overall, great professor and great class!!

Professor Allen is great. While his class requires quite a bit of work, it's very well worth it. Perhaps his best quality is his passion for the subject. It makes it easy to want to attend class knowing that the professor is going to come in with a great attitude and an interest in teaching. He is always willing to help and clarify if needed.

Dude always dresses on point. Very enthusiastic about the subject and it's really easy to listen to. Interesting subject and not too difficult of a class. I suggest it.

This prof has been one of my absolute favorites. I am a graduating senior and very pleased to have had him before I leave. He is incredibly entertaining and will keep your attention much longer than your average prof. Be sure to take notes, though! And you will have to read more than most of your major classes! Heavy work load but rewarding.

Interesting class, but tests were more difficult than expected.

a great teacher very passionate about the subject though not the greatest at puns still very funny when he drops a bad pun about Oedipus or something. somewhat convinced he is actually Hermes in disguise and for some reason really enjoys teaching people about his past :)

The professor for this course is very well-informed about the material, he gives great examples and can connect the myths together very easily.

Mont is a great mythology lecturer. He does a wonderful job of connecting greek myth to our modern day world. In his class he does not grade the papers. He has GAs (graduate assistants) to do that.

There are 5 required books for this class that you will need because there is A LOT of reading to do every week, and i mean A LOT!. i felt that the exams were hard, and there wasn't many opportunities for extra points other than the weekly assignments, participation, and the 2 exams(midterm & final).

Fantastic story teller in a class that demands it. I went to him with odd questions and favors and he never let me down once.

Absolutely worth taking. The workload seems tough at first, but after the first two weeks you get accustomed to it, and the lectures are fascination and informative.

This was his first semester at SIU so the beginning was a tad shaky, but he was a great instructor overall. If you listened to his lectures & read your notes, you would get a good grade. If you showed any sign of intelligence on your papers, you were guaranteed at least a C. I thoroughly enjoyed his class and would happily take it again if I could.

It's a great and fun class; Dr. Allen gets really in to the material which makes all the students want to get into the material. He knows how to make a class interesting.

Dr. Mont is one of the greatest college professors i've had! The work he assigns is not tedious. The lectures were the best part about the class! You could tell that he really cared for the subject and the students. I would recommend this class to anyone despite the many texts in which we had to read.

Lectures needed way more visuals. 2 tests a semester does not accurately showcase a students ability and grade in the class. More tests through out to split up material for better grades and material learned.

His enthusiasm & passion for the subject makes the class that much more entertaining. If I had the option at this point, he would have inspired me to minor in Classics. This was hands down my favorite course at SIU.

Good teacher makes class interesting

This class is very interesting! but don't take it if your not into Greek mythology, You have to attend lecture to get all of the material for the exams. Allen does make the class fun and enjoyable because the stories alone are interesting itself! id defiantly take this class again.

I really like the way he professor transferred the knowledge to the students. He really showed a lot of interest in the subject, which motivated me and my classmates. Evethought I am a science major, I enjoyed this course and reommended as a hummanities requirement.

A fantastic instructor who has quickly become a treasure of the university. Admirably passionate and knowledgeable - lectures are unlike any I have previously experienced. They are content-heavy and thorough, so do expect to be both astonished and entertained.

This is the best class I have taken since coming to SIU. The professor is passionate about the topic and very knowledgeable. I am changing my research focus to mythology and its correlation to ancient works of art. You have to work for grade, and it will reflect the amount of work you put into it.

Although I love mythology and cultural stories, I've never imagined being an archeologist. My final semester of college I was introduced to Mr. Mont Allen and I almost changed my major. Not only was he extremely knowledgeable about the art and the people who made it, but he loves them. He cares so much it's infectious. Anyone would enjoy his class.

I loved this class. The tests are average, if you study they are really easy. I usually hate reading for homework but the readings he gives are actually entertaining and will help you a lot in the class. He doesn't just give homework to give it, he gives it to help you. I would recommend this class to anyone.

This was an amazing class, the lectures were fascinating and also necessary to attend, along with the reading, so that you actual learn things and pass the class. If you are in school to learn and not just earn a degree, this is the kind of class for you. It helps the the professor is extremely passionate about what he teaches.

Mont Allen is one of the best professor's I've ever had. Every single lecture was so engaging and inspirational! He's extremely helpful and approachable, so please make use of his office hours and chat with him! A very unique and wonderful teaching style that won't be forgotten by any of his students.

Mont is an expert at his craft and he really shows that through his lectures, and he really makes the time fly by. Prepare to read a ton of literature for assignments in discussion sections, as they make up a fair amount of your grade. Also, ask a ton of questions, he loves to answer everything there is to know about the subject.

Mont Allen is an expert in his field, which shows in his lectures- he is incredibly enthusiastic. I was able to skip the lecture multiple times and still do very well in the class- just make sure you go to your discussion sections and do the assignments. He always has very unique pants on, which is a weird thing to point out, but true. You'll see.

Excellent teacher and let the students know what was expectef. The tests were very, very involved and it would be wonderful if we didn't have to write as intensely. The material covered is quite interesting and I appreciate all of the commentary, all the jokes, and all of the enthusiasm. You sir, are the one professor that made art history awesome!

Dr. Allen's class was wonderful. He encourages participation in lecture and is willing to accept questions at any time. He also tries to get to know his students and encourages attending his office hours! His lectures are interesting and will definitely help you with your assignments and exams. Wonderful lectures and great teacher. Really gave me a new appreciation for art and art history. I now want to go visit all of the places that we have discussed in class.

Out of all the courses I have taken at SIU this one I can say I learned the most from and thoroughly enjoyed while doing so. Dr. Allen has such a passion for the subject that it comes out in every lecture. In order to pass the class you do need to attend lecture in order to grasp all the content. The TA's are a little strict but great class overall

Tests kinda suck (all writen response ), but there are only two. They are also graded fairly. If you take him for art history he doesn't teach like other art hist. Teachers (aka failed artists) he teach from a classics backgouund making class extremely enjoyable, and interesting.

A great, fun class that covers core curriculum while providing a fun and engaging academic atmosphere.

Dr. Allen knows exactly how to keep your attention. His lectures were always interesting and even though this class counts for a core class I took it because it's an interesting class and not because it fulfills the requirement.

This class was so much fun! Dr. Allen is an excellent lecturer and the work isn't really all that hard. It requires some reading and a little bit of thinking, but it's nothing so difficult that you're going to be banging your head on the wall. It's a wonderful class and I highly recommend it!

Dr. Allen is hands down my favorite lecturer. Even if you have zero interest in the topics on which he speaks, he can make you interested. He's funny, passionate, and incredibly smart.

The class this semester was fairly easy and you made it easier to understand

He was an amazing lecture professor, and he had chosen his GA's well. He is funny and kind and he remembers everyone he meets. I would suggest going to his office hours. He enjoys talking to his students. Very passionate about his subject and it shows through his lectures. He will make you love Classical Mythology, I know he made me love it.

Dr Allen was an AMAZING professor. Initially I assumed Mythology was going to be a boring lecture with power point slides. Mont kept everyone engaged with his high energy. Very passionate about Classics. Lecture actually felt more like a TED Talk. Notes were CRUCIAL to the exam, which was fairly challenging. I can absolutely say I learned A LOT.

Dr. Allen is knowledgable and passionate about the information he teaches. Lectures are fun and easy to understand. If you do the readings (2-5 pages), and don't skip lectures, you should have no problem in this class. I also recommend going to office hours because they are a good resource and Dr. Allen is a great guy to chat with.

SIU-C doesn't deserve this caliber of professor. They are very fortunate to have him. Extremely knowledgeable, passionate, cares about the students. Exams are challenging but if you come to class and take good notes you will pass.

Before I took this class I knew little about greek/Roman history, now I'm addicted and couldn't be happier. Dr. Mont Allen is very passionate about his work and is also an understanding individual who is willing to listen to your excuses and help you succeed. His lectures seemingly flow from his mind and kept my attention. He makes it a fun class!

Dr. Allen is an amazing professor that really cares about his students. This class is really fun to take and you can learn a lot of really interesting things! It might seem a bit intimidating because it's an art class and, if that isn't your major, (it wasn't mine) it can be kind of scary but it's not hard if you put forth the effort! It's awesome

My second class with Mont did not disappoint! The lectures were fantastic; I never once left class feeling like I'd wasted my time or was struggling to pay attention. The readings were broken into tiny bite-sized chunks (2-5 pages per class period) that even the laziest among us could keep up with. His grading was fair, and , even better, curved.

Dr. Allen is one of SIU's finest professors. He puts an unparalleled amount of love into each and every lecture. Class is captivating every day. If you take this class, you'll come away with tons of cool facts about Ancient Greece, Ancient Rome, and their art. Definitely worth taking, especially with Dr. Allen!

Took his course on Greek myth and loved it so much I took this course for him to be my professor again.

Although attendance was not required, missing even just one class without getting the notes will leave you confused. He was very friendly and expressed his office was always open. His lectures were great and very interesting.

Really liked this professor and helped find a love for greek mythology.

It is not mandatory to show up to class, but a lot of what he talks about in class will be items on the tests. Take ALOT of notes, the lectures are mainly stores of Greek myth

Dr Allen is one of the most involved teachers I have had here. He gives compelling, insightful lectures, encourages student participation, and is good about meeting outside of class. Great about DSS accommodations. This class is difficult if you don't put in the time, but easy enough with effort. Be ready to write, and pace yourself on the exams.

Dr. Allen is an extremely effective teacher. its obvious he loves the subject and shares that love to his students. He made this class a joy to attend and really cemented my respect and appreciation for Greek mythology.

Dr. Allen is an amazing teacher. He will really challenge how you think, and make the class an absolute joy to attend. You won't find it hard to respect/befriend this professor. But heaven help you if you dare to pull out your phone or have headphones in during lecture--the wrath of Zeus (Allen) shall smite you where you sit.

He made class humorous and interesting. I found each lecture important. I loved the different tones of voice he used, he was not monotone at all. I also loved the jokes and references to the gods and Greek rituals he would make. One of my favorite things was him saying "Good morning" even though our class was at 12 on the dot in the afternoon.

This class was my favorite out of every class that I have ever taken in my entire career as a student. That being said, if your don't want to put in the effort to show up to class and put in the work...... you will not succeed.

He's a funny guy and showing up to his lectures gives a much better insight into what you should be learning than most teachers.

Very inspiring

I took this class hoping to get an easy A and move on. But it was more than that. He actually teaches and he actually cares for all the students which is rare. It was an easy A, but it's more than just showing up and writing papers. It's not hard work by any means, but you do have to apply yourself. I'd happily take another of his classes.

Dr. Allen is a wonderful teacher. His heart was built for it and his enthusiasm is contagious. I am thankful to have had him! Even though some of the "ideals" of Christianity taught to the class were a bit harsh to hear (as a Christian), I sincerely appreciate him as a teacher. Many thanks to him and his GAs!

I'm international student but Professor Mont Allen's class is probably one of the best I have taken in SIUC. You know you're learning about Greek cultures if you're taking CLAS230, and there will not be free A's in this world. But Professor would make sure everything on test is based on what we learn, and he is a great story teller! :)

Classics with Dr Allen is a great choice for humanities requirement. I had my doubts but his lecture style really changed my mind. If you have a hard time interpreting the readings, he will give you a new perspective to understand it all more clearly. Sections also help a lot if you do the reading and attend classes.

Dr. Allen is one of the most engaging and genuine professors I've ever had the pleasure of being in class with. Not only is the material interesting, but his presentation is excellent on point as well. One of the best professors I have had here at SIUC. So much effort is put into his lectures and he always reviews the material multiple times so that it becomes ingrained in your mind. So much enthusiasm and care for each of his students! I would recommend this course, or any Dr. Allen teaches, to any other student.

He is an amazing teacher. He is very approachable and even more caring. The class as a whole is lecture heavy but every lecture is interesting. If you take good notes, you won't need to do a lot of reading, but you will still need it for reference and for midterm/final practice or aid through his one-page papers. He deeply cares about his work.

Dr. Allen is a fantastic professor. I have had him for several classes and will have him for more as I am double minoring in both Art History and Classics. His lectures are fascinating and give you such great information. You will have a decent amount of work, but between the book and lectures they are easy.

The course was taught very well and very clearly. But if you didn't read the assigned text then you probably wouldn't do very well.

Phenomenal lecturer and will make the hour fly by with his great storytelling skills! Be ready to read. There are reading assignments every week with a paper. Definitely worth taking!

The honors section was difficult but extremely entertaining. The conversations held were enlightening and full of varying thoughts and opinions, making class consistently interesting.

The professor has a clear passion for the subject that inspires similar interest and passion in you. The images and material will leave you in awe. It is a worthwhile class made better by the professor.

I really enjoyed Dr. Allen. He makes class fun and exciting. He has incredible knowledge of the material and has a true interest in it. Going to class and taking notes is important because the weekly quizes are detailed. You have to do the reading each week for the quizes. The tests are stressful because of the format but he is a fair grader.

Many reviews I read before taking this class had negative reviews on workload. Honestly, the workload was reasonable given the class. Dr. Allen is a caring teacher, who cares about his students and gives them the best experience in his class. I wish I had time to take another one of his classes. I recommend this class to everyone!

Dr. Allen is absolutely amazing. His classes dont even count for my major or for credit at all, but I take them because he is such an inspiring, delightful person. I highly recommend his classes to anyone and everyone, regardless of major. You will never find a more passionate professor!

He is by far my favorite professor, he takes the time to learn your names, and no matter where he sees you he will always say hi. Attendance isnt specifically mandatory but it benefits you so much to show up. Weekly quizzes which arent hard, always a good hand workout with writing, but his tests are graded very fairly.

Honestly, if you graduated from SIU without taking at least one of Dr. Allen's classes, no matter your major - you got RIPPED OFF. Reading material is limited, but you are expected to know it well. I have taken many classes with Dr. Allen and TAed others. Truly one of the best professors at the school. Passionate, knowledgeable, compassionate, engaging. Since moving online the high quality of the class is still there, if anything, it has gotten better. He encourages you to be in class but also posts his recorded lectures with subtitles to navigate it. The way he speaks is so poetic. I play some light jazz in the background of his online lectures & it really adds up to a smooth learning experience.

Dr. Allen is an amazing professor who really cares about students success. He is always so enthusiastic and holds so much knowledge in Classics. 10/10 would take a class with him again (which I am!).

I think that this professor was amazing. They showed a lot of passion for what they were teaching, especially for an entry level class. A teacher being passionate about the subject always seems to make me more interested in what is being taught. I already had an appreciation for mythology, but this class made me much more interested in the subject.

Great professor and a great class. Really interesting lectures because Dr. Allen has a lot of great first-hand knowledge about the subject. Very interesting readings too. If you've ever had an interest in the ancient Greek world, this is the class for you.

Dr. Allen is beloved by the student body, and rightfully so. He provides attentive, impassioned teaching that is comparable toeven better thanan education from a private institution. It's unfortunate that there's only one of him, as university life would be greatly improved with more.

Dr. Allen is such an awesome teacher. I love going to class because he is a ray of sunshine that always brightens up my day. This class was fantastic; a lot of homework, two readings a week plus writing assignments, but it wasn't hard and worth it. Dr. Allen tackles this subject with a respectful light heart. He brings sophisticated knowledge to the table as well as plenty of humor and word play. With occasional challenging subjects, he is kind and open to discussions.

Dr. Allen is very funny and charismatic. Even if you arent into mythology or dont like to read, he makes lectures (and discussion if youre in the honors section) interesting and fun to learn about. Theres weekly reading and sort papers to write, but otherwise the course is not that difficult. Its just a matter of paying attention.

I loved this class a lot. It was the one class I had that didn't go towards my major, but my favorite by far. I was interested in what we were learning throughout the whole class. The professor is extremely friendly and is very good about communication. Unfortunately, my communication skills suck. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CLASS AND THIS PROFESSOR!!!

Clas 230 is a great class to take if you want to learn the mythology of the Ancient Greeks. Dr. Allen is a wonderful professor with a passion for teaching. He's always happy and excited to teach class everyday. He is always available after class to help students in need. The discussion sections are always wonderful with great people.

He is a fear teacher and would love to have another class with him

Allen is the goat. He makes nearly every other professor you will ever have look worse because of how much he cares about teaching. It is apparent that he has refined his lectures and the structure of the class to be as enjoyable and enlightening as possible. If you can take Greek Myth as a gen ed, absolutely do it. It changed my life.

this is my second class with Dr. Allen and it was very insightful. this class was very interesting and fun + plus he was helpful with each assignment.

Dr. Allen is an amazing professor who is really understanding. In lectures he makes the difficult readings easy to understand as well as making the topic fun to learn about. I would highly suggest taking this course with Dr. Allen.

Dr. Allen has a wonderful personality in the class and always manages to maintain interest in the class. He is more then willing to talk about class or something else outside of his class times.

Great teacher, lectures are engaging and easy to understand. There is quite a bit or reading required for assignments but it is doable and there is only one assignment per week.

Dr.Allen is by far the best professor I've ever had at SIU.He teaches Greek Mythology in a clear&concise way,and relates it to modern-day examples to improve student understanding.He is incredibly approachable, and genuinely cares about his students performance&well-being.While attendance isn't mandatory, don't skip lectures!You'll be missing out.

A SIUC legend, Dr. Allen is very loved by all in the Classics Department, with good reason. He is supportive of students both inside and outside of the classroom, and teaches his courses in both effective and interesting ways. His courses require a lot of work, but as long as you care you will do well. I could not recommend him enough!

Dr. Allen's ability to lecture in a captivating way, makes this course enjoyable, even if you don't love the material. There are only two tests (midterm and final), but you know what to study. The weekly assignments are straight from the textbook. Even if Art History isn't your thing, I would highly recommend this course with Professor Allen!

Dr. Allen is very passionate about all the classes he teaches. To see a professor so excited about their lessons is exciting and contagious no matter your academic focus. Information is expressed and graded clearly/fairly, there are several ways to reach Dr. Allen outside of class time for any questions, and he is always welcoming and supportive.

Dr. Allen was an amazing teacher for me! Greek Mythology quickly became my favorite class of the semester and the lecture is, how I'd describe, just like a storytime. He seems to genuinely care about how his students are doing in his class and had his GAs accept papers until the very last day of class. I'll miss coming to this class!

Dr. Allen is very passionate about teaching Greek Mythology. He allowed us to open our eyes on the wonders of Greek gods and heroes, while weaving stories and entertainment in a way that was memorable and enlightening.

Although I only took this class because it was a recommended gen ed by my advisor, I loved Dr. Allen! He was so fun and spunky all the time, making the class more enjoyable. Going to lecture is important considering that is the only way to learn the information on the exams.

Took this class my first semester of college and it definitely set my expectations for other classes very high. Mont Allen is a genuinely inspiring professor with engaging lectures. PLEASE just show up for class! It is honestly so interesting, you don't want to miss class.

100% recommend- While attendance is not taken for a grade, it was definitely crucial to passing the class, but I genuinely looked forward to the lectures because the subject matter was interesting and Dr. Allen presented it in interesting ways. And, even though my class was huge, Dr. Allen made it a point to get to know each student which was great

Dr. Allen makes Greek Mythology come alive! His lectures are engaging, and the workload is manageable. Unstuckstudy was a great study tool alongside the textbook. Definitely take this class if you can!
