Very thorough, and a lot of reading, tests were hard, and term paper was long, but he graded pretty softly. Very interesting lectures, always tried to tie subjects together and did so well.
This guy is dope. Former hippies turned teacher, he knows life and knows what he is taking about. We get to watch the Daily Show in class, it's great. Although there is a lot to read, its good reading, and makes you a better person to be in the class.
Fun and Down to Earth
nice guy, though often test questions inconsistent with in class discussions. often grades on feeling rather than fact. suggest checking in with him about grade to keep it clear... inconsistent in grading as well.
This guy is cultured. He knows whats up.. form music to religion. He is down to earth and funny as most instuctors can get. Do the basic stuff to pass his class.. go to class ( and pay attention ) read the book.
very witty and knowledgable. just follow his classroom rules and directions, and he won't bug you.

He's pretty cool. I really liked listening to his lectures. You can pass the tests as long as you read though but his lectures are interesting enough to go to class for. He shows a lot of funny clips in class. Not friendly out of class though so just go to class and move on.
He went to Paris on the study abroad thing. Therefore I had him for three classes, Pols 25, Hist 18.2 and French Life and Culture. I found him to be sometimes disorganized, possibly **** in class, liked to repeat himself a lot. But, if you did the work, and read, you got a good grade(I got an A)
The class was interesting. It was definately geared for students 25 yrs or younger. The online tests are helpful. One needs to take good notes and review current events to get a good grade in his class.
This is the professor that put me on my career path. He is the reason I went on to study poli sci as a major, and end up attending law school. Very important prof and ended up being very influencial in my life. Thanks monte!
Great teacher.Interesting and entertaining. Orients his class to younger students. It's a hard class but rewarding. He's hot,if he were 30 pounds lighter I'd marry him, fitness is important. He is a fair teacher and tries to apply "Freedom of Speech" to all students, even the obnoxious ones.

Take class only if you plan on reading the text. Hard to take notes on in-class lecture, because they seem to be more stories than informational. However, class is not demanding of work. Will do good if you read the textbook. But, hey...there are not a lot of college students that like to read!
A good professor, a respectable realist. Take this class if you want to do all your reading and go to class; the lectures are gruff, witty, and very informative, so you should go anyway. Shows funny clips in class and ties concepts to current and past events. Rewarding overall if you do the work.
I wish I had taken this class before the end of my general ed because I would had liked to take more classes from Freidig. He does a great job of tying the subject matter into current events, making it clear how relevent what we're learning really is. He lectures are interesting, witty and I always leave feeling I learned something new.
Great teacher - his interest for his subject shows. He is entertaining and challenges his students. This was a political theory class, and there was a lot of reading, but he was able to summarize and clarify what we read. His delivery is very clever and witty. He made me want to learn more and I can recommend him highly.
Very cool teacher. A renaissance man whose enthusiasm for his subject is contagious. This class gives you a philosophical foundation to build on and helps you to understand where political theory originated. Freidig is one of the best guides you can hope for. I found him to be tolerant and helpful to all students. I will always remember this class.
Great professor - it's not an easy class, but he makes it so interesting! Good lectures and news clips and very entertaining. You look forward to his lectures. I have a new outlook on our government because of his class. His tests are hard and he grades hard, but overall I'd recommmend his class! Wish I got an A... oh well.
I love this man. Not only is he the most interesting, witty, learned teacher I've ever had, but he's good looking to boot. This class was very involved and was difficult, but he was always there to clarify. Loves visits during office hours. DO THE READING. It was essential. Being in his class just made me want to learn. Somehow very inspiring.

He's a great teacher and you will learn a great deal from his class. Make sure your assignments are in ontime.....
A good teacher. I dont like politics and Monte's class only strengthened my bias. His lectures are linked to current events and he expects you to be up to date on news. Dont miss classes, pay attention, DO YOUR ESSAYS, ask questions, and take nothing personally and you will pass. Poli Sci majors should take his classes.

This guy is an awesome teacher! But you have read the text cause he tells more anecdotes then straight out of the text lectures.

I'm enjoying the class and would reccommend him to anyone who likes taking life lightly and enjoys good conversation.. be able to see other sides and not judge off the bat
He is a great teacher and an extraordinary man. His love for political science spread like a disease through his students, and he teaches with such clarity and ease that even if you aren't interested in political science, you just want to listen to him talk about it because he makes it seem so fascinating. His class is awesome because he shows video clips of the daily show, and he answers questions with such ease and expertise that you actually develop an understanding and a love for political science.
Awesome teacher! Such a relaxed guy. He sure does like the Daily Show..
I really hate political science, but this teacher was so fun and easy going that I actually didn't mind the class. He's a wonderful teacher - I earned a B, and it's a subject that I still really don't like. My whole class loved this guy as a teacher - only two students out of 38 dropped.
Mr. Freidig is very intelligent and a good instructor. He is a bit scattered but knows what he's talking about. Tests are based largely on the text book so it is important do the reading. He starts the class with clips from the Daily Show and the class gets a good laugh first thing.
He makes the class very interesting. Some days he will show you clips from the Daily Show. He jokes around a little to keep you from being bored. Very intelligent fellow. read the texts, read the news paper, and be at 90% of his lectures.

this class is hard if you don't already know anything about political science. the only people getting good grades are the ones who are buddy-buddy with the teacher. his grading system sucks (whole semester 100 pts!), and his exams are super hard, his study guides are very vague. lectures don't match reading assignmetns. not so great teacher really

I am a conservative and it seems he is liberal. But he is extremely fair and a good teacher. His test are only hard if you dont do any reading. This is college. You dont get A's and B's for just showing up to class you lazy bums. Also, he ties the current events to his lectures.
So glad I took this tedious class from Monte. He showed clips from the Daily Show and SNL, made things much less dry. I learned a lot.
I expected this class to be an easy A, but that's defintely not the case, expect to work hard and earn your grade. Although the lectures were a little boring he is very passionate about the subject and always willing to help. Very approachable.
His tests, quizzes, lectures, & the paper you have to write is EXTREMELY difficult. his lectures are boring & don't relate to his tests @ all. his study guides are irrelevant to what's on the test. if you take him, be prepared for LOTS of reading & having a difficult time.
Simply, there are better Political Science teachers out there. I got him by default and he seemed cool for awhile, it went downhill for some reason. Not bad, but not good. Average teacher. Get a better political science teacher if you can.
I agree that the class was interesting at first but went downhill. "Monte" was really starting to get boring at the end like that ferris bueler teacher. I was constantly looking at the clock. I think that showing clips of snl and D.S. was cool but i did'nt learn anything from it. don't bother buying the pol.sci book, he doesn't go over it in class
Cool teacher, got to watch SNL and the Daily Show. His tests aren't really easy; I read the book and did the essay questions and still couldn't manage to get above a B. He is also unclear during his lectures.
So he was cool for the first few weeks...we watched funny clips and he made jokes but his lectures were unclear and he is a terrible question answerer. I got a B and i tried my best. the teast are filled with confusing questions. there is one research paper which is graded fairly easily. i would not reccommend him.
Great teacher, but not an easy class! He takes role and expects you to read the textbook, the newspaper and take notes during lecture. Welcome to college, folks! He makes Political Science relevent to a generation which seems to have lossed all interest. He always has a funny clip to start it out. Expect top-quality teaching and working hard!
Freidig is a really down to earth guy who seems to enjoy his work. You watch the Daily Show and SNL every day. He wasn't the best teacher but his class is relatively easy. I got a B in the class and didn't even touch the text.
A good professor. Make sure you come to class for the lectures and do the readings, but other wise its not so tough. He's really entertaining.
I really felt that this was a great class. You really need to listen to his lectures if you plan on passing the class, but as long as you pay attention to the lectures, write good papers, and study your book you'll have an easy A. The class is not overly difficult, but it does require effort, so beware!! haha
great prof always incredibly up to date and relevant,he must watch every morning news program. has a deep understanding of western culture. Got to take. The daily show clips really add a lot as well. my one complaint is that he tends to lecture on tangents, but he does cover information relevant to the tests. Having the book is VERY helpful
Dr. Freidig was great, interesting and his teach style is laid back. The only thing is that his test are worded sort of oddly,he uses some hypotheticals, so read the book and take good lecture notes to ensure a good grade. Love the Daily Show clips. Highly recommend this professor.
Mr.Freidig is such a great teacher!!Makes the class interesting by showing clips of news and comedy. I would highly recommend him, very down to earth and extremely nice!
This teacher always seemed like he was ****. Interesting guy, but did not teach a whole lot about Political Science. Showed alot of Daily Show Clips. I find this pretty useless. Overall nice guy, but not a good instructor.
I liked this prof & I liked this class. Expect to attend lectures & do readings (they supplement each other). You should do well if you do the work. He's pretty clear about what he wants. Wording on exams can be odd b/c they're from a company, not written by him. I did all the work and no extra credit (though lots of easy chances) and got an A.
I thought he was by far my worst college exsperience.. I can't believe people actually liked this smuck. Hes a slim- ball, and just repeated himself over and over im my class. He has his favorites for sure! And he loses your work so if your grade does not match what he told you your grade, you have no evidence to back up your story. super lame!
he is not very easy!! you do have to work hard in his class and pay attention and do all the readings. but he is very informative and will make you learn a lot!
Mr. Freidig is HILARIOUS, funnniest teacher I've ever had. In my opinion he is HOT. Very good teacher, I wasn't interested in this subject at all before the class started and now I am obsessed with political science. Seriously, he is so awesome, smart and so funny! He cracked me up everyday. -Deena
Monte is an amaizing teacher that makes the subject fun and interesting. It is not an easy class by any means, but at least Monte makes it fun! Extra credit opportunities, sit in front, and make sure you listen during lectures.
HORRIBLE HORRIBLE. (Sorry if your reading this) but i hated this class. It was hard and confusing. I really dreaded coming to class. The tests were impossible.
Freidig is a nice guy. He knows what he's talking about. He can be a little scattered at times, but he's never lost any of our class's paperwork or anything. His tests are pretty hard, just because the questions are more like reasons WHY something was created rather than asking for its definition. Homework and attendance will get you an A, though!
Monte is awesome. His tests are very difficult, but he geniunely cares about each and every student. Sit in front, add to class discussions and it is an amaising class!
He's tough, but fair and forgiving. If you don't do so well on a test, he gives TONS of opportunities to make up for it with extra credit assignments. Even if you absolutely hate PoliSci classes, at least give him a shot. Plus he showed us Daily Show and SNL clips throughout the enitre semester. I would recommend him.
Monte is a great teacher who makes the material relevant and fun. His tests are super hard, but you can take the online practice tests that 50% of the questions come from.Study the essay topics because he will give you extra points if you don't do well on the multiple choice questions.
He is AWESOME. Very passionate about his subject, very easy going and jokes with students while managing to convey the subject matter clearly and with ease. Must have decent attendance and don't underestimate tests. Only 3 exams and 2 quizzes with minimal assignments which are all really fun. Shows a lot of political clips from SNL and Jon Stewart!
The class allowed for growth and tantalizing curiosity that was not crushed or muffled by Monte's own views. He allowed us as seeds to grow and reach toward understanding with a neutral nourishment. Test are hard, do not under estimate them. Extra credit opportunities are very easily obtained. Class was amaising though, Great teacher!
I see some bad comments about the snl clips. Those clips sum up monte's teaching style. He uses comedy to try to teach what is a boring subject to most of us. Test are difficult, but at the end of the semester, you leave the class w/ a sense of accomplishment. Monte is an excellent teacher! His door is always open, you just have to knock...
Freidig knows his stuff and wants you to learn as much as you can about political science. His teaching techniques apply towards the average student who has no plans further with political science. Very easy if you know about US government and study all the notes. Research paper is very easy also.
POLS1 course contains three exams (each with 50 mult choi and two with an essay), two quizzes, a term paper, and a number of do-at-home assignments. Many opps for ex cred (movies, etc.). Dr. Freidig is more liberal than I am, but generally, he didn't try to push his views. Usu very fair. I know a lot about subj, but still learned some. Great prof.
Monte is one of the worst professors I have ever had. He is way too picky about being tardy and is not at all understanding about missing class. All he does is drone on and on and shows a bunch of pointless SNL/Daily Show clips. They're entertaining, but not educational. I would never consider recommending him.
Although he's usually rumpled and disheveled, Monty Friedig's lectures are really great. I never thought I would enjoy a class as much as I enjoy this one. I actually look forward to it. The tests are difficult and the term paper takes some time but it's not too hard. Lots of extra credit. I'm getting an A.
not one of my favorite subjects but he kept the class interesting. he is pretty clear in his lectures and his tests arent too hard. he is a good teacher. you just kinda have to read. take him for polisci.
knows his stuff. interesting and pretty funny. do the readings and you will be fine
Thorough. THe test are questionable. Must attend class, he is approachable and helpful. Made me interested in polysci. Learned a lot. Several humorous daily show clips. Keeps you engaged. Would take again. Gives extra credit, fair grading, will work with you if you show interest!!!!
Monte has passion for his students. His office is always open to help students with his class. It is not easy, but he makes the topic funny and easier to learn. Sit in the front, contribute to lecture, you'll walk away with a friend for life!
Professor Freidig is very funny. He uses a lot of clips from Comedy Central and SNL that correlate with the lecture. He is very laid back. This could either be good or bad. I found him elusive when I needed info about my grade. He is also hard to take notes from. He tends to jump around a lot, and his notes on the white board are hard to read.
He is a good teacher. He loves what he does and the subject he teaches. He assigns very little homework beyond simply reading the book. There is a term paper he assigns that he expects to be taken seriously and will grade harshly if there are ANY errors in it, from grammar to syntax. His lectures are informative but he has can be too quiet at times
great teacher! thought i would hate political science, and it ended up being my favorite class this semester. pay attention read over your notes before tests and you'll be fine. great lectures and also funny. loed the class!
He is amazing im not kidding you.Theres almost no hwk, a few little assignments and a term paper that isnt hard at all.I left this class EVERYDAY saying how great it was.He speaks clearly, you get to see funny clips in the mornings too so study for the 2tests, take notes in class, do the ppr & your golden.TAKE HIM! You wont regret it. I PROMISE.
He's really funny. A little unorganized; his office is crazy. Barely gives out homework and shows funny clips from the Daily Show or SNL everyday. Tests are a little hard, but do the reading and go over notes and you'll be fine. There was a research project but it wasn't that bad. Definitely recommend.
Monte is an outstanding political science professor. He has a great sense of humor and yes he does show many clips of SNL, Daily Show, and Colbert Report in order to teach the curriculum and keep you entertained. His tests can be challenging, but if you study hard enough you'll pass easily. Lots of extra credit too. Highly recommend!
Great teacher. Semester project is very important but is not difficult. Pay attentipon to ALL that he talks about in class, it IS important for the tests. Overall, I enjoyed this class and found it easy to get a good grade. Study your notes and read and you will do fine. Lots of opportunity for extra credit.
Freidig was awesome. Lectures were made interesting with SNL clips etc and his passion for the subject really shows. I missed a few too many classes so I got a C but if I would have dedicated myself more I would have gotten an A for sure. Definitely reccomended!
One of the most interesting teachers I have ever had. Such a good person inside the class as well as out. Lectures are made interesting and engaging (even if it is 7:30am). He has such a passion that makes you care about political science, that I normally wouldn't have gotten from any other teacher. Fantastic teacher!
For the first weeks of class, I wasn't taking notes and neither was anyone else. Freidig seems to ramble, but don't be fooled - his lectures are amusing, filled with stories, and follow a clear structure. No power-points, only an outline on the board he subtly acknowledges. Use it as a guide; then class will be an enriching experience.
Monte is a very passionate teacher. His class demands that you pay attention to his lectures which isn't hard since they are so engaging. His morning classes are well worth waking up for as they are filled with humor and entertainment. Don't be fooled by his teddy bear demeanor, Monte is a very smart man and will help you if you seek it.
his a great teacher makes class fun and nice hes an easy grader. the class was fascinating if u attend read the book take notes youll be fine i didnt read the book i took notes in class did not study for the test only crammed like twice and got a c not the best grade but i slacked off anyways the class was good overall no homeowrk rarley and an ess
He is a great teacher. You learn a lot from him as long as you pay attention/ take notes/ and read the book! The class can be funny and fun, although he does seen to drone on. Everything he lectures on is on the midterms or quizzes so you MUST pay attention in class.
As a general ed class the room was mostly kids not really caring. In a small-group assignment, one girl asked if any one else struggles to stay awake in class. Monte is one of many teachers at SRJC with great passion & knowledge in his field and his teaching style (Daily Show, SNL + current news and lecture) flows well. Do the reading ahead.
I wish I could keep taking classes from Monte, I always felt very informed after exiting his class. He wont push his opinion on you, just tell you what you need to know and let you make your own decision. Make sure you do the reading. He likes it if you speak up in class .
Freidig's lectures were often confusing and scattered, but I found him very understanding and kind during office hours. If he were a bird, and I were an egg, I would have been swearing in the shell.
Freidig makes his class fun and entertaining. He starts off every class period with a short SNL clip, and his great sense of humor will have you laughing. Really funny, approachable, and a lot of extra credit opportunities.
Monte is a great teacher to take for pols 1. He shows hilarious video clips every class period. gives us a study guide for the midterm and final. You do have to study a lot but it worth it. You leave knowing a lot about politics. We had online tests which were hard but other then that he is a great funny guy. take him!
SOOOOOO BORING! Easy. But soooooo boring! I was literally on Facebook the entire semester. One paper but grades it super easy. Not organized.
Great teacher, very funny and cares about his students! Always shows clips from political satire shows which makes class fun. Reading is about 30 pgs a week. One paper and 2 midterms with a couple quizzes. I would recommend him, he makes you see the reality of politics. Had a 7:30 class and my experience was great!
Great teacher funny guy. Relates comedy clips to what were learning. You must study if you don't know about politics. Pretty hard tests. 1 paper and online quizzes you can use your book on. Attendance counts as points in the end. Also gives extra credit opportunities
I think he was a horrible teacher. We watched the Colbert Report all class and heard stories about him drinking constantly. He doesn't lecture, but rather just rants about unimportant info. During our final, he sat there with a pipe in his mouth. He was unhelpful when asked for help and I am now unable to transfer, because I got a D in his class.:(
This is a tough class and you must attend to pass, but he is the most amazing person. Love his funny clips at the start of each class. This is a very understanding and wonderful instructor, if you take the time to go to office hour and communicate with him it can really help in your success. Show him respect and he will do the same in return.
This is not an easy class, but he is a very fair teacher who makes his expectations clear. And after taking this class, you WILL have a strong understanding of government and politics.
Monte is a cool guy, that being said, polisci is a hard class for those not interested in politics. His lectures are all over the place; unclear about what will be on tests (has a joke of a study guide. Hes teaching like 8 sections of this class so i think he mixes stuff up; but overall if you have to take him, prepare for lots of work.
I did not like the way he taught his class. He started off the class with funny video clips from the Daily Show and holding up clipped newspaper articles. His lectures seemed to be sparatic and all over the place. He stated after the second midterm that the average score for the first midterm was a D and average for second was a C. Thats not right.
Sporatic. Hard tests that he doesn't review for. I don't feel like he doesn't care much about his students.
I've been at the SRJC for 2 years, and Freidig is my favorite professor. He is funny and interesting, and good lecturer. I like how he shows Daily Show/Colbert. The class is easy if you do your homework and reading. Lots of extra credit opportunities.
Monte is clear at the beginning of the term, in order to get an A on the exams you must study from the book AND lecture. This is tough class all together, but it's not that hard to pull of a good grade and have fun. He weights the class to the end of the term, so you can't slack off towards the end of class or skip class. Best teacher I've had.
It was cool taking this class during an election. However, after that the class was really dry. Freidig was okay. Hes funny; made me laugh a few times. I didn't like how he held up a bunch of old boring newspaper headings all the time. He's a hard grader and seems unorganized/sporatic. He doesn't push his views though or show bias, which was nice.
The Professor is funny, entertaining and nice. I did not mind the newspaper articles--he holds them up for a second while going over current events. Not a big deal. His tests can be kind of difficult, but he grades easily. He wants his students to succeed. There is one paper, and as long as you turn it in on time, you'll be ok. Overall fun class
Great teacher, difficult subject. Take good notes and READ YOUR BOOK! The class is easily passable if you actually try. Lots of extra credit opportunities and humorous clips from the Daily Show and the Colbert Report. I really enjoyed this class, even though I'm not into politics. He's pretty unbiased and won't grade based on your political views
I got a C in his class, . My first C ever, so what? I learn so so much from him. I really regret that I didnt study harder to earn better but he prepared us for research paper and lookinh for good sources of information. I have no complaint at all.
This class is pretty boring but easy. The lectures are often all over the place but usually make a point. Read the book for mc on exams and at least listen to lectures for the essays on exams. Very nice guy with a good sense of humor!
I enjoyed this class even though I'm not really into politics. It can be challenging to take notes on his lectures because they don't always follow a clear outline, but they are entertaining. The book was exceptionally dry, though, and you have to do the reading for the tests. There's also a 7-9 page formal research paper for 20% of your grade.
Good professor, take notes and read text book and you will do fine. Loved this class, good mix of textbook and media lectures. Very interesting so pay attention. No fuss prof, take him if want good lectures and to actually learn something.
Attendance mandatory. Class extremely boring and dull except for the videos. Hard to follow along what the professor is talking about. I would suggest taking with another teacher but this class is usually only offered once a year
I also had POLS 18 with Monte. I guess attendance is mandatory, but I missed a couple classes and still earned an A without being a poli sci major. If you read the text and can write at a college level, you'll be fine. Otherwise take English 100 and 1A to brush up on reading/composition skills as this is a relatively rigorous course at SRJC.
He is all over the place. A lot of funny video clips. Funny teacher but boring hard to take notes because he is all over the place on topics. Uses lots or current events but hard to relate to the textbook
He is not organized with his class! hard to take notes. Exams are really hard. Don't take him
Monte is a great prof. I took this class in the summer, dreading it and he actually made it really interesting. It is a little difficult and you definitely earn you grade but I absolutely recommend him.
Not helpful at all, if you even try and ask for help or ask a question all his responses are its in the syllabus.. Really boring and hes not as funny as he thinks he is. Doesn't really care about his students. So its hard to care about his class.
Monte is so full of knowledge its almost overwhelming. He speaks without bias, which is pretty rare. We had a few exams, which have a study guide. He is available during office hours and is very helpful.
Monte is an awesome, awesome guy but his political theory class was the most confusing and frustrating class I have ever taken. I do not recommend taking his course unless you are a poli sci major and even then you will be lost.
Cool guy and he loves political theory, but his ego is immense and his grading is extremely unfair. Good luck getting an A in his class because he doesn't grade like most teachers, he just takes points away. He doesn't really teach the subject, he just expects you to read the book and memorize 2000+ years of political theory. Very Disappointed.
Compared to other teachers, he is extremely disorganized. Doesn't work a computer well so he has to use VHS, even for current news. Needless to say, no PowerPoint presentations, all white board. Which wouldn't be a problem except he writes randomly all over the board. You must be an extremely good note taker/organizer. Lowest grade in college.
Monte is a great professor. As a poli major I can say he was one of the best professors I had. All the people who are saying his class is hard and disorganized didn't read the text. He's a bit old school. Political theory is something you must read to understand, it can't really be though if you don't read. I definitely recommend his classes.
Monte is great. Read the text book and do practice quizzes online, and the multiple choice sections on his exams are easy. Pay attention to lectures, and ASK QUESTIONS TO CLARIFY and you'll do fine on the essay portions. Only a few short, engaging homework assignments, and one research paper. He's a great guy; smart, knowledgeable, and passionate.
Freidig was a great teacher. Coming into this class, I had expected it to be very boring but he made the classes very fun and would include lots of contemporary examples to make things more relatable. His grading is clear with your grade based off off a few quizzes, two tests, and a final (which have study guides) . Extra Credit is also given.
He is a funny guy. Unfortunately he doesn't use PowerPoint and the notes on the board can be hard to read and can be confusing. He gives current event examples but wants us to use past events on tests. All test are written, no multiple choices. He offers extra credit but its not worth much. Must be in class. not very helpful, "go back to syllabus"
Monte is a very vibrant, and entertaining lecturer!. Helped the class to understand politics in a manner that was applicable to our lives. Also, was extremely helpful with scholarship app's, and support in Study Abroad!
The hardest part about this class is how he grades. There are only 100 points total, so even if you get 1720 out of three tests, you have a 91100 in the class assuming score everything else perfectly! Not a lot of room for errors. Keeps lectures current and likes to have class discussions, but won't penalize quiet people. One research paper.
Monte is a great, funny guy. But his class is difficult and nearly impossible to get an A. The entire class is out of 100 points, so your grade can really only go down. The 3 point quizzes aren't difficult. Study guide for exams (essays). One term paper that's around 8 pages long... Tough grader, but you will learn something.
Very interesting class, I learned a lot from him. Lectures can get a bit long but they are essential to passing the class. Gives fun extra credit: movie watching! Quizes are a bit challenging (fill in the blank). Always makes sure to go over current news and issues, shows lots of funny videos as well.
Great teacher, great class. Plays political humor video at the beginning of every class as well as goes over current events. Show up and do the readings and you will do fine. Offers extra credit. Assigns one big paper every semester.
I learned so much about our politics and history in this class! He is up front on how to get a good grade. Give extra credit but be ready to participate and read you chapters if you want to get an A. Clear homework assignments, quizzes and a term paper due. He made the subject interesting and funny. I would take him again. Online textbook. No cost
Best class I ever took. Turned me on to an interest in understanding and following politics.
Great teacher, kept the subject interesting and clear. Take lots of notes/record lectures and you should do fine.
I loved Pols 1 with Freidig. He is such a gem and is so spunky. The class is based on lecture but he provides a FREE online book. He has very little written on the board so make sure to take extra notes as he is explaining things because his exams are all lecture based. As a poly sci major, I would definitely recommend others to take this class.
Nice guy. Be there EVERYDAY. Lectures are long, all over,& never new what part was actually important(he didn't really write out notes just talked). Took this class at 7:30 am,if you don't like politics, don't do it. Exams are all green book essays nothing else. Does have extra credit but it requires going to theatre, gets pricey. BIG research paper.
Monte is a great teacher to have for POLS1, he usually started class with daily news and found a way to link what was going on currently to what happened in the past. The textbook he requires you to read is free online. Tough but reasonable grader on the midterms. does not use powerpoint so be prepared to take lots of notes on his lectures
Monte is a funny professor. If you do not like Politics do not take his class. Long lectures and has many quizzes. Research paper is required to plass class. It is long (10 pages). WILL drop you after missing three classes. Doesn't really help out students. Expects for you to read news and know what is happening.
You only get the oppertunity for 200 points in the class. The midterm and final are both essays and are 50 points each. The TEN PAGE research paper is 50, and quizzes and attendance are 50. Everthying is based on lectures, THAT SUCK. He literally spends an hour of class on news and 30 mins on the material, which he doesnt explain thoroughly enough
I took Freidig's class last semester and it was, honestly, not a great experience. He did have a good sense of humor and his class can be interesting - but it didn't feel like he wanted anyone to succeed. His expectations were pretty ridiculous and he gave me a grade of C for participation even though I showed up every day. Glad the class is over.
Freidig was a great professor and made class very interesting. He is clearly very knowledgeable but doesn't use power points. He always plays videos (like Even Stevphen) for the class that relate to the topic which I liked. I took this class over the summer and it was very manageable. 2 chapters every week and a quiz almost every week. Essay tests
His class is very hostile and he is not easy to approach.
Freidig's a funny guy, but I wouldn't take his class again. He doesn't write notes on the board or use powerpoint, and exams are based solely on what he said during lectures- so if you don't write something he said once at normal speed during you're screwed, especially bc exams make of 100 of the total 200 points for the semester.
Not even a decent prof, here's why: Teaches from a biased viewpoint, is extremely subjective, very tough grader, completely unapproachable, boring lectures, thinks he is funnier than he really is, uses bad biased sources for all news, if you think differently don't express your opinion he won't like you, wish I would have read reviews before...
This class was so good I almost changed my major. No, it wasn't the easiest class there is actual work to do. If you show up, listen, take notes, read and think you should be just fine. At first I thought his lecture style was messy & hard to follow. Truth is its an amazing master piece weaving current events with the class topics.
Not meant for slackers! Very old school type of guy. Taught at UC Davis so he structures his class exactly like a UC course. pretty difficult class to pass if you dont take solid notes of every lecture every single day. If you dont study for the quizzes and you will not pass. Bottomline: You have to actually try in his class to get a good grade.
Outstanding Professor. I took this class over the summer and I enjoyed it. Professor Monte emphasizes the importance of politics, and the value of staying up to date on politics. You will learn a lot if you study and take good notes. Also I admired how he was able to find hilarious political humor videos related to lectures. Take his class!
Lots of small easy assignments, only one big assignment. A 8 page research paper, over a month to do it. Midterm and Final are in class essays, very easy if you pay attention in class and take good notes.
he is a strict professor but will give weekly opportunities for extra credit. can earn up to 10 points of extra credit by watching the political movies he assigns. not too much hw, but reading is a big portion. mostly online articles and free online textbook. he is short tempered
I loved this class. He starts every class with current events. Take good notes. you don't have to be amazing at writing essays but there are a lot of small essays (plus the 8-page paper). There is a lot of reading. He also gives you extra credit opportunities each week. You don't have to buy a textbook.
If it weren't for this class, I wouldn't bother paying attention to politics. Very interesting class with rich content. My advice is to take good notes and to keep up on the readings. Simple class, just show up and pay attention.
Mr. Monte is a great teacher. Learned so much about polysci from him. I originally took this as a gen ed requirement for CSU, but Im getting more interested in the subject. His tests were not hard and related to in class material, so go to class as much as possible. Essays were easy compared to English 5 essays. Id take again for polysci 2..
Mr. Freidig taught me a bunch in his class. Wasnt really interested in political science before him. Study hard and you will definitely get an A!
