His midterm is fairly easy and the questions are taken straigh from the lecture notes. Do not take this course if you are not computer inclined and don't like bioinformatics, he will help you if you go to see him personally
very helpful but his heavy accent sometimes is hard to understand
difficult to understand w/ his accent.. his exams suck.. not a bad person but his exams suck ass..
I spent more time figuring out what he was saying given his accent than what he said. Nice guy but ...
If you are a visual learner, definitely take this course. Lots of animated pictures & good websites for students to go to. If you don't like HR reading, he like to repeats the material over and over, just need to remember what he say in class for midterm. Easy to approach after class & through email because small class size in the summer.
terrible
His lectures fail to engage you & one can seriously fall asleep during the lectures (some ppl dont shy away from snoring). I am sure that he is a great person, but he is not really a great prof. His explanations are not clear. He is quite confusing but not so much because of his accent but simply, sometimes, he makes no sense. BTW who made him hot?
Really nice guy. His accent isn't that bad. Would give you the shirt off his back (not that you would want it). Exams are hard. Labs are easy. MUST go to all lectures. No point in buying text.
This prof is such a sweetheart! Nicest guy! The lectures are alittle difficult to follow because of his accent. But overall he repeats alot of the important information. I like how he shows lots of visuals in order to make everything more clear. I would recommend this prof!
very nice prof, especially if compared to Logan Donaldson. His lectures may seem a bit boring, but this guy knows what he is talking about.
never fell asleep in class untill today. This guy only reads the slide. At least Donald Duck used the chalkborad (altough he used it for everything) ( a guy once asked him about his laptop, and logan wrote down all the specs on the board while there are like 20 people waiting for queations after class... lol)
Very nice guy. His accent is not that bad, I can understand every word. Very cute how he pronounces certain words ("Gameetes, meeosis.") :)
just reads over his slides!!

This prof is one of the worste prof i have ever seen. His lectures are completely unclear. Going to his lectures are totally wasting of time. His accent is totally unclear. I suggest u to avoid this class.
If you want to waste your money, go for him!
omg, this guy is great! his little israeli accent makes the class so much more interesting...and he's very approachable
his accent is eew, but he talks real stuff so generally i like him, much better than donaldson
With every lecture there is less and less students attending his lectures, that must say something about his quality of teaching.
He is a nice man, but definately not a good teacher. HE looks like a family man to me. Like they say some people should just not teach. He reads over his notes and shows annoying vidios. As a said a very nice man, sometimes very funny but for that amoung of money...i dont know..^)
A very nice man, very patient and never snaps at his students like Donaldson. Yes, his lectures are based on the slides, and I thank him for that because I don't have to worry about whether I'll do poorly on the exam because I missed a lecture. I learned a lot from him, even though he mainly went over his slides. And the animations were cool.
Wayy too booring! I hated his boring lectures, like everyone else. And could never understand this guy. Practicaly, half of the class ever showed up in his lectures. Tests, comparitevely harder.
Really nice guy with a true passion for helping his students. Lectures were boring but if you didn't go, you didn't miss much. Exam was totally easy (got an A) and I attended very few of his lectures. Overall really nice and if it wasn't for his strong accent, he'd be one of the best profs i've had
Easy test. Don't waste your time going to the lectures.
Prof. Anafi is very calm, cool, and collected. He is very knoweledgable and is an expertise in the area of genetics. He does go out of his way to answer any questions with respect the lecutre material or any other questions regarding biology. The basis behind his class is logical thinking and knowing the material. He does not use trickery.
He's english is ridiculous and makes u constantly wonder who was the '**^*.* that hired him to teach 500+ students. He has no self confidence at all and loses all that english he knew once something distracts him... His test was easy though!
he's the cutest little israeli professor i ever met! he is so helpful and so ready to tackle any question u have...i really enjoyed his class
AMAZING professor. he is very nice and very helpful. if you ask for his help, hell be very happy and excited to help out. I am enjoying his classes very much. His tests are very fair and sometimes easy. He definately got me 100% for a good professor, even though sometimes its hard to understand the english in his test questions.
Horrible! This course is not made for Faculty of Arts students! I got screwed by the course description, this course should be made for Biology students. I dread going to this class 3 times a week. It has the potential to be a good course maybe, however it really needs to be dumbed down for the Fac of Arts students!
He tries hard to be charmng but he is very difficult to understand. Maybe he would be better teaching smaller classes.
Nice guy & very helpful, but not the best teacher. He's hard to understand and doesn't interact with his students during lectures. Like other students, i was also screwed from the course description which says no prerequisites required...turned out to be a hard core biology course that u absolutely need a good science background for.
If you want a teacher who knows how to screw you over this is your winner.
Yes he might not be clear, but what he does is read his own notes. So all u have to do is read them! they have a lot of detail so read it! no surprises. he isnt one to say a word about something in class and then test you about it. all he tested on was in the notes. BUT he went crazy for the final, remember to do extra genetics for exam!
DON'T take the course with him. He'll screw you over for sure. Without a doubt, the worst professor in biology.
Terrible in every single aspect. Worse bio prof so far.
worst professor ever!!... do not take this course enless you like to fail. He does not teach the material and then puts the hardest questions on his tests. You cannot understand a word hes saying, let alone his notes.
Some days were better than others, could have been a little more clear in teaching...Overall.. OKAY!

GREAT PROF, ANSWERED ALL QUESTIONS. WOULD REPEAT IF YOU NEEDED REPETITION> OVERALL, IF YOU LISTEN YOU WILL DO WELL
By far the worst Biology professor. He ties this title with M.Crerar..he will seem easy on you for the first midterm...that is because his true mission is to stab you a million times with his out of space final exam...dont take virology with him...you wont get a better warning
It was supposed to be an easy course but he makes it a nightmare ! he's not a good teacher . final is extremely hard, no matter how much you study.AVOID THIS GUY . There were 68 people in the class and there was only 2 A+ and 6 As .
Couldn't understand a work of what he was talking about. Was very easy on the midterm, but got his revenge with the final exam. Avoid him.
He means well....but in the end you end up hating the course because your so far off the syllabus its not funny.
Wors Prof Ever, very bad teaching style, the whole 1st year BIO departement is messed up.
This prof is a total disgrace and shame to biology departmnet. He was the cause of the average drop for most of A grade students. He is the one that avoid students to meet their dreams because of his total lack of teaching capability and fairness. Read everything he didn't tell you to read and read anything that he didn't teach.
Not a very good prof..if you have a problem with accents STAY AWAY!!!!! good lecture notes but if you ask him a question he NEVER gives a straight answer...have a problem with the exam? TOUGH LUCK..he wont listen...if the whole class thinks a question is unfair its our fault....staay awayy!!!!
He is a nice guy... but he lacks the ability the express what he wants to say and his accent really bothers me...
This guy is the WORST prof: A.he doesn't know his material and can never answer a question properly-Sometimes I REALLY wonder where he got his PhD B. never wishes to answer questions outside of the class-he can't be bothered C.test=highschool easy, exam=RETARDED, not hard, just stupid questions that have no relevance to you understanding virology
Nice man, but York should seriously think about letting him go.
Seems nice at first but then...BAM!!!...will flat out turn you away from seeing him outside of class, even in his 'office hours', can't answer questions properly in class, and actually puts stuff on the exam that he doesnt teach, then proceeds to try and teach it during the most brutal exam ive ever written. Worst prof in bio department, avoid him
When he's interested in the topic he's lecturing about, it's interesting. When he's not, it's not. He has a thick accent and a low, bass voice. Compared to other profs he knows his stuff well. He's nice and sometimes very generous with compliments. His answers are not always helpful, but he never turned away my questions. Medium hard exam.
As the second prof coming in, his purpose was to teach genetics to our class; he didnt really use the textbook to teach, but then all he pretty much did was read off the slides he made and show animations. the animations were good but he simply went overboard; we get the idea after a few times =.=" he's often hard to hear... avoid if possible =)
It's all about cancerrrrrrrrrrr and virrrrrrrrrruses, the guy's obsessed with illness. You only witness his brilliance after repeatedly nagging him with questions
He is a good guy. You get to laugh at him more than his jokes. His tests are not all that bad, except you need to listen in class. The exam was surprisingly hard. And yes, his accent can be problematic.
HE IS A WORST TEACH I HAVE EVER HAD>...... IN OTHER WORDS, HE IS A ****!!!!!!!!!!
He is a ****!!He was rude.. He never answers any questions. I don't kno where he got his "PHD"; I don't kno who hired this **** to teach...Please don't take any class he teachs... don't ruin your unvierstiy life.... serious

Hmmm...it would appear the same poor halfwit wrote a lot of comments over several days...hey buddy, next time you should vary your writing style when ranting on multiple comments...
He is not very clear in the way he speaks, but he is really funny...mainly people laugh at him. He is very helpful and approachable and gives relatively easy tests. I liked his class, not too much work. Recommend it.
I did well on the tests but i screwed a bit on the finals! Don't listen to what he says, what he least emphasises is what will be most tested on the tests (yea but if he says that this stuff WON"T be on the exam...then it will not be there) do NOT miss on his lectures... i'm selling his txts (the txt and the 6 buklets n the CD) all for $70 !
Professor Anafi is a very nice guy, he is helpful and relatively fun during class. With that said, I find his classes to be very very difficult to understand. He jumps from one point to the next introudcing new topics and then tells you that you will not need to know it.. Nice guy, just very unorganized and hard to follow in class.
He was a really nice prof, he LOVES teaching & is super friendly to student and tries to answer every question asked.Only con:he has a thick accent and gets teacsed for it. Of you study and not slack off, you'll do really well.he marks really fairly. Very approchable,so just talk to him privately if you have questions and he always explain them well
Motti is a good prof. despite his heavy hebrew accent he's pretty easy to understand. his lectures are interesting. one thing that bothered me was that u had to go to every class to write down his lecture slides. it would been better if they were posted somewhere. also, dont buy his textbook it's rarely used. but u should study hard for his tests.
I had a lot of trouble understanding the accent. Ended up sleeping quite a bit in class, but he has really good lecture notes. All he does is read from them. You'll probably have to do an extra bit of Googling for his notes, he sometimes uses terminology that is better suited for 2nd/3rd years. Writes awesome exam questions.
God he's a really bad professor. I had him for Biol 3155 too and he sucked. He's teaching biology of Cancer right now, and honestly I sometimes wonder if he knows what he's talking about. His tests are ambiguous and practically you need to know what he's thinking or you're messed. Overall he's the worst professor I got.
If ur one of those ppl that always goes to lectures and learns things from lectures RUN as soon as u see him. But if ur like me and prefer doind ur own reading on the topic and not get help from the prof then this is ur class! Btw I really want to know who hired him!
His accent is not terrible, it just takes getting used to. I did really well in the class, A+. He is very clear in what he wants on the midterms and on the exams, I've learned a lot in the course even though my science background was limited to grade 11 biology. He made sure that it wasn't too complicated, great teacher overall!
I like the course, and the prof. I used the textbook package but now I just use class notes. Dr. Anafi is very helpful and very kind. He's even learned my name, He's very caring Exams are fair. Know all the material covered in class. You'll feel very inspired after leaving his lectures. Tutorials are every week, go for sure, they are great.
He's very easy to understand, we all understand english i dont see the problem. Hes very kind and helpful, his notes are good and tests are easy to understand. overall a very good Prof. although the textbook is optional its a good idea not to get it
not helpful when asked questions, says your in university your on your own. -Profs are there to help, or else we wouldn't need them.
use the damn book or at least go by that content..the stuff u use from the internet isnt even accurate, not even the stuff from the site you said it was from!!!
totally hot stuff!! the accent and the way he spits out his words..it rocks my world!!!
He is not helpful at all, often answers your questions with questions. His voice is very easy to tune out, and his notes arent clear. I had to google everything before exams to be able to pass. i DO NOT suggest this class for anyone who does not have a specific interest in biology, because it is not interesting!
he's a pretty kool prof...knows his stuff (but just reads off the slides) if u pay attention in class and go thru ur notes ur fine...and he's very approachable...the clips he shows r very helpful n kinda entertaining as well but too bad i had a morning class n never had the energy to pay attention to them...but overall he's an OK prof
worst prof I've ever had, he's very unclear with the worst accent and the silliest jokes, he wants to teach you what's in his head rather than the material. if you wanna know how to answer his exam questions you have to know what is he thinking of instead of studying...
Good Prof, keeps things interesting. Very insightful.
the people who complain about this professor, just don't understand course material in general and usually don't do well regardless. he is VERY helpful and VERY nice. and only tests on class material, so it's a lot easier than other classes because you don't have to worry about a textbook! i LOVED microbiology this class, easiest and funnest ever.
He is a good person but teaching isnt his profession, i wish the biology 2900 course went deeper into things as its not very fulfilling. His accent is extremely annoying. There is discrepancy between what he tells you is important and what appears on the exam. Avoid this course with this teacher if you can or wait till he retires.
He is evil. i just wrote the exam yesterday. i studied hard for it, i ace exams without trying that hard. He is unfair and the exam was unfair. Avoid him.
I took BIO2900 with NO science background. I got an A+ in the course. He is a good prof. You have to attend classes. You have to write EVERYTHING DOWN. Then you have to go home, go through your notes and use the 'net to really condense the knowledge. His lectures are logical, but they go by quickly. Prepare to work at home and you can do well!
Contrary to popular belief, he is a good professor. I recieved an A in the course but I warn you, it wasn't easy. You need to be detailed in your notes. Don't assume anything, ask lots of questions and be active in moodle. I believe that if you do not do well, it is because you didn't study hard enough...sorry but it's true. Good luck!
He is an excellent professor! He cares about what he teaches and about his students success. This is also a very interesting course. You just need to attend class and take detailed lecture notes and you'll get an A. I highly recommend this course.
fair questions, no textbooks, easy A
This professor is great! he loves when people ask questions and he greatly encourages it. It helps to go through a microbiology text book from the library to confirm your understanding of basic concepts. Everything that was on the test was taught in class. In order to do well in this course you must attend ALL lectures and study for the tests!
So funny and a very good teacher making a very good prof.
He has a very thick accent so it is hard to understand what he is saying sometimes. The course material is interesting and not difficult, however his notes are not enough to get a high grade. You need to use the textbook/internet for some concepts. He is a bad prof overall, inconsiderate to his students. I got a B+...good luck
I remember taking the test and remembering exactly what he said, he repeats what he says a lot, his slideshows are done with a lot of effort and he gives away easy marks like attendance (5%) and participation in the class wiki and in general marks stuff fast! a prior knowledge in basic grade 12 biology would make class easier though :) LOVED THIS!
Amazing Prof... Plz Dunt Listen To What Other Have To Say... Prolly One Of The Best (Funniest, Smart, And Yes, Hot) Prof I Had In 2nd Year At York... Only Thing bad Is His Tests Are Only 15 Questions... Tht's Hard... (The Peenotype, Lol)
i dont want to be mean, but AVOID AVOID AVOID. thick accent, hard to understand sometimes. doesn't post anything online. his notes are useless. crazy exams. so easy to get lost in class. hope i dont ever have him again....
He has a lot of knowledge of this course but lacks the ability to express it in an understanding way. His lecture notes are very vague, with him barely scraping the information needed to succeed in this course.
one of the best profs I have ever had. He cares a lot about his students, he is very fair. very approachable, spends a lot of time on his students to make sure everyone understands what he wants you to know. just focus on the lectures, and make sure to attend class. basically added 20% to everyones marks just by doing weekly quizzes.
ok so hes an amazing proof but he isn't clear made us watch video all the time, i hated his class but his tests are easyyy
No structure to class. No reference to textbook. Does not post power points. Impossible to study for. SO lost!!!!
I never had this kind of professor who enjoys to fail students. His tests are hard and he talks all the time during the test. He doesnt provide the powerpoints speaks with accent, and super suspicious for everyone during the exam. He thinks everyone is cheating. The worst prof I ever had in my life. Avoid him!!!!!!!!!!!!
No ppts. Huge incomprehensible accent. Absolutely no grading criteria for participation/assignments. No references to textbook, nor any indication about which chapter was being covered. Rude. Talks during exams, extremely suspicious. Poorest teach I've had yet. He probably only teaches so he can conduct research. Classes not relevant to exams.
Once you get past the accent this prof provides a very clear explanation of all topics covered. Problem is because all course notes are provided onlin by students (for bonus marks) many don't attend class. Low attendence = little real understanding of topic. Exams are easy if you took good notes, not just what is shown on overhead or on wiki page.
Great professor and class. I have no bio background but attended class, took good notes, studied, and had no trouble getting very high marks. He's enthusiastic, funny, very knowledgable- had an answer for every question. And entirely understandable, re: the comments about his accent. He is also maximally available to students before/after class.
My fav prof because he talks to the class discussing topics so you understand them. Students who need a prof to regurgitate textbook are in trouble because he likes to talk naturally about biology. I attend classes of his I'm not enrolled in because they help me with other science courses. He's the only teacher I would do that with.
very rude, does not share his power points, does not tell students what chapter he is using from the textbook. overall, not a very good professor.
If you can get past the accent take crazy notes since he does not provide chapter focuses, or his powerpoints. Also many of the exam questions are not at all covered in lectures, so good luck.
Cannot understand him. Thick accent. Long answer test questions not in textbook and are tricky. Doesn't post lectures so you have to go to class to write notes because half the material he covers is not in the textbook. Avoid this class with this prof if you can.
favourite prof this semester, easy A, funny and nice guy, slight accent but you get use to it. No textbook so if you go to class and pay attention the exams is easy
Great class, educated prof, albeit slightly thick accent but if you pay attention you can understand. Old school lecturing style which was great, no bs. Take notes, read the text and you're set.
Mixed feelings. I'm entering the final with the A, but I taught myself this course. Beware:He has a THICK accent and is not articulate. He's intelligent, but in the wrong profession. Put the work in and you'll do fine, but even i'm doing well, i don't recommend this course. Communication is vital in teaching. Slides aren't posted, no textbook
I took this over the summer too. I don't know what the poster is saying below. He was an excellent prof! He really cares about his student and wants everyone to do well. Accent takes getting used to. He's a good man! The rare type that cares.
The tests are very hard and I found impossible to understand. He yells and speaks in a way that is unclear and his accent is very, very thick. His demeanour is rude. This is my first bad mark at York. I severely regret taking this course.
Very helpful excellent slide notes
This is one of the better profs that I have ever had at York. He makes a otherwise confusing concept very clear. The course content does not go into great detail so it is not too difficult of a course. This is one of the very few profs in York that actually cares about his students, you can tell! He makes a full lecture for Q&A so he is helpful
Does not respond to emails, replies are one sentenced, along the lines of "contact the TA". Has a heavy accent and puts material on tests that were not stressed upon enough in the lecture itself (some materials were probably brief mentions, not very suitable to be tested on). Refuses to take medical notes, attendance marks will be docked.
Slides are unorganized and don't transition. He has a thick accent and randomly shouts which made understanding difficult. His midterms ask questions on content which had no emphasis. Also likes to throw in random ratio questions. Scheduled a midterm and the final exam 6 days apart and refused to release marks from the midterm. Had to teach myself.
Had to teach myself everything Thick accent and random shouting Lectures are scattered and make no sense Includes things he placed no emphasis on in tests Posts no slides online and doesn't allow you to record lectures Uses Youtube videos to teach certain topics and then doesn't further explain it
He tries hard to make all students understand the lectures. You need to take good notes I was able to get a B in his class just taking notes from his lectures . Never read any text book . He posts all book chapters so no need to buy a text book . Nice professor .
Barely possible to understand due to the accent
Honestly this class was a joke. You can not understand a word that he is saying, he has a thick accent and above all his exams and test's are not written with proper english so half the time you have no idea what he is asking. I asked for a regrade on a quiz and explained why using exacts from the text and he said I was wrong.
He has a HEAVY accent. It was hard to understand, but if you catch his rhythm, you will get what he is saying. Quizzes can be really hard sometimes. He dont give any note/ppt, so you need to come to class and take note. Make sure you read the book. I find it helpful. Tests have MC and short answers. The short answer are always tough, MC are fair.
He has a bad accent, but he is very knowledgeable and knows his stuff. If you work for it, its an easy A! Going to class isn't that important to be honest, he has an online forum where people post their in class notes, use that you'll get a good mark.
If you are looking to experience the worst professor at York then take a class with Anafi! He is extremly impatient rude and disrespectful. He barely speaks English and doesnt understand biology. He will fail you even if you try hard.
Very easy and interesting lectures. There's no textbook needed. You just need to copy the slides and write down notes. The tests were multiple choice and mostly based on the slides. The course wasn't too difficult at all, especially if you have taken biology in high school, although that isn't necessary.
I enrolled in NATS 1670, which was meant to be a FULLY online summer course. Yet, the outline said you had to be present for mid-terms and exams. I emailed the professor to explain that I was told it was a fully online course and therefore had made plans to work throughout summer in another country. Professor did not care, had to drop the course
I have no doubt that Mordechay Anafi is passionate about science and he has a very in-depth understanding of the subject. However, he is not a good professor. He lacks the skills needed to lecture clearly and effectively. He jumps from one thing to another and basically rambles & rants. Think very carefully before enrolling in one of his courses.
His lectures are incredibly hard to understand, he has a really heavy accent. The material is interesting but he rambles off topic a lot and is not very open minded when answering questions. No textbook really needed for the course, just try to understand what he says
Extremely heavy accent makes him pretty much useless in class, since you can not understand what he's saying. When he gets excited, he shouts and glows with passion, which makes him even harder to understand. The microphone he uses is way too loud and distorts his voice and accent even further. Rude. Does not post powerpoints. Self-study class.
The rudest professor I have ever encountered in my 7 years of post-secondary school. He frequently yells at his TA's during exam setup, and at students before exams when they are not sitting in a perfect line. He has zero social skills, refuses to answer questions, and is barely understandable due to his extremely thick accent. TERRIBLE! STAY AWAY
Hardest course I have ever taken. Prof is very rude & yells at students &TA during exam set up, rarely open to answering question. Next to impossible to receive help outside of the class. You HAVE to attend his call to get the material as he doesnt post anything, lectures have no flow & are hard to understand due to thick accent, READ THE TEXTBOOK
By far the worst prof I ever had in my life. First off, he's hard to understand with his thick accent. You would expect him to post powerpoints online but he doesn't.. which means you the only way you'll learn is by trying to understand him. I advise everyone to avoid taking his classes because he is a terrible prof.
If you take gr12 bio and chem you'll be fine. However, my friend only took gr11 bio and she struggled. Attendance is mandatory because nothing is posted online except other students notes. He explains the points is greater detail just pay attention &TAKE NOTES. Don't get thrown off from his heavy accent. Multiple choice exams were straightforward
I will never be able to get the sound of him saying BOCKteria out of my head. He's hard to understand, sort of crotchety, and has no qualms calling a student out for anything. He gets very excited and laughs at his own jokes Lectures are helpful a bit, but all the info is on the Wiki. Unfortunately nursing students don't have another prof option.
Interesting course but taught by a horrible professor. Only 2 tests + 1 exam. His questions are difficult to breakdown and what he wants as the answer. Read the MIRCOEXAM pdf and supplement with Khan Academy videos and textbook. Make sure you dedicate THE MOST time to this course!!
So I am an A+/A biology student in my fourth and final year. I've been through it all. I've had great professors and ones that are not so great. This class has to be the worst I've ever taken during my 4 years at York. Just avoid taking courses with this professor, as he does not speak English nor answers any questions. He is very rude also.
He knows his stuff but does not know how to teach. His lectures can be very content heavy and the way he allows you to review your midterm can be pointless. He doesn't answer any of your questions so you don't even know why you got the answer wrong. He also doesn't care about his students. He won't take the time to see you if you book an aptmnt.
Has an accent, so can be hard to understand at times. I don't think the course was that bad, definitely ace-able. Wasn't too content heavy, but can test you on super small details.
A lot of people misunderstand his for being tough and strict. I personally find his very enthusiastic. I admit that his accent is hard to understand, but overall, you can really tell he cares about what he is teaching and really want students to learn. Just attend lectures and you will do well.
all you have is 2 midterms and a final for your overall mark. Considering he is VERY hard to understand, I feel like not going is fine if you teach yourself. He is VERY rude and intimidating to try to speak to. Tests are very hard, class average at 64% which he said was "high"... Hated everything about it. 10/10 would avoid if possible.
I was taking this course lightly as 50% is a pass. First test i got a 39% while people who attended or simply just read microexam pdf got 80%+ from then on i started reading the pdf and i got 94%. If you want to pass read microexam pdf if. you want to get high marks then read microexam pdf plus attend lectures gurantee A. Great prof learned alot!
Don't let the bad reviews on here scare you. Motti was my absolute favourite prof at York. He's a gem. Take notes in lecture- he doesn't post the slides. Plus there's NO WORK. you're only graded on multiple choice exams so just study for them and you'll do fine.
Loved the way his class worked. There were no assignments outside of the 3 or 4 multiple choice tests that we took. Another bonus was that we didn't have to spend $100+ for a textbook. Some questions on his tests are kind of ambiguous though so you have to listen to exactly what he says and look for the answer that comes closest.
It isn't clear through lecture, textbook or wiki what the key concepts are. You need to study everything, this is a self-study course. At least when there is a textbook the prof can assign readings and gear the lecture towards the chapters. Tests are wild cards.
i no know what to do no more i try everything but this class so hard i no know what he say i so stressed everytime i go class
Prof Anafi doesn't have office hours and doesn't explain concepts properly. His slides often contradict the information he says, and when asked to clarify, he responds with "the details are not important". Questions on his tests are detail-oriented and filled with grammar/spelling errors, making them hard to understand let alone answer correctly.
His accent is super thick and he doesn't post his slides, so attending lecture is your only chance at a decent mark. Some topics are very repetitive while others are barely touched on, and he doesn't follow much of a course road-map to move things along. You have 4 multiple choice tests which determine your mark, so study hard. No textbook needed.
He is a very nice prof. The only thing is that his tests contain a lot of material so you have to study everything! There are 4 multiple choice midterms they're usually held on Sundays. Sometimes it is hard to understand his accent but overall he's alright.
If you didnt take bio in high school dont take this course. his lectures are long and he addresses many topics within the 2 hours sometimes not focusing on the things that show up on the exam. 4 multiple choice test that make up your mark so you have to know everything in detail(he doesnt make the questions easy) ,study everything!! hard class!!!!
theres 4 tests, including the final and lectures are not posted online. attendance also counts for 5%
I took Dr. Anafi's class in my 4th year of university, and I have to say, of the 40 courses Ive taken in these years, this class has got to be the worst. He lacks energy, sits on his chair behind a computer all class long, and just talks off a powerpoint presentation with no flow, structure, or clarity. He provides no slides and no textbook. Awful.
He is a nice prof it is just if you dont have a strong background in biology it is pretty tough. You have to take pages and pages of notes only to find out that all of it is cumulative so everything you learned is on every exam. There is SO MUCH to read I thought it would have been easy but its not. 4 short multiple choice exams( 1 hr)
His exams are very fair and he explains concepts well in lecture. He answers emails quickly and will clarify things when asked. When you get used to his accent, its possible to do very well.
Good professor, friendly, willing to answer all questions. He presents all needed material in class through lecture and slides. Slides not posted online, take notes. No required text, use any text/internet to clarify info as needed. Mark was made up of 3 straightforward tests. No trick questions. Multiple choice and short answer.
I really didn't enjoy this course. Says to students at the beginning of the year that you don't need to have a strong background in science to do well in the course, which is just simply a lie. So, if you're like me, and don't have a strong background in science, AVOID. I learned a lot and there aren't any papers which is nice, but my GPA was hurt.
DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE!! the professor is terrible, his accent is so thick and hard to understand (not to be mean), his powerpoint are very dense and boring and his tests have nothing to do with his lectures (his tests are basically a guessing game). HE DOES NOT POST HIS NOTES and expects students to collaboratively make notes on York Moodle wiki
this professor was not very good, I regret taking this course and if you could avoid this professor please do! his lectures are super heavy and BORING!!! and his tests have nothing to do with them!! he is just an awful professor, don't waste your time or money! good luck :)
heavy lectures, very thick accent, hard material, goes off track a lot, his tests have no correlation with his lectures which makes it hard to study for them and get a good mark.
His voice is the most annoying with a very thick accent. It is really hard to understand him and it will affect your understanding and your grade. It is not an easy course. Need to put it a lot of hours understanding his lectures.. its almost like a self-study course. HE DOESNT POST SLIDES ON MOODLE!! DONT TAKE THIS COURSE UNLESS YOUR AN A STUDENT.
BAAAAD
He knows his material but he does not deliver it very well. His tests are very hard, many of the questions have words twisted to purposely seem confusing, or are not mentioned in lecture. Its difficult to achieve a high grade in this course.
I learned lots of useful stuff from his course. He uses wikis which are a great way to learn. He does have an accent but it's tolerable. Getting grade A is achievable if you go through the materials and understand it. He doesn't test you on stuff he doesn't teach in lectures
Just started this course and can tell professor is extremely passionate and knowledgeable about this subject which I respect! I enjoy learning from those with this teaching style. YES there is a language barrier and it is difficult to understand him. The recorded lectures are helpful and I admit the textbook seems way too much. MUST apply yourself
Can't understand him very well. Is not specific as to what is on exams. Will not answer questions properly. You pretty much need to teach yourself everything. Youtube videos helped me.
notes taken from lecture do not match exam. the questions on exam have plenty of grammatical error. hard to understand exam questions. *have a background in bio*
kinda hard to understand but if you focus on wanting to get a good grade then you should be good. There are o assignments so you are only marked on the multiple choice exams
I was skeptical at first from so many negative reviews. But honestly, his tests are based on his lectures and if you can apply the concepts to the real world you wont feel tricked. He has a sense of humour and storytelling/visual style of teaching. Just know how to study for a science course and you will be fine :)
lectures are unorganized and the prof has a very strong accent. tests are quite difficult, as he claims that only lecture material is covered however that is false. there is a link to an online TB, which i feel like you have to read as well (even though he said it's not necessary). just took this course for my natural science credit, but it was BAD
claims you don't need a biology background, however the lectures contain quite complicated bio terminology. tests are unrelated to lecture. least favourite course taken this year definitely recommend taking another natural science course for your credit
Avoid this professor. He has a very thick accent and his midterms are very difficult. As a frequent B+, sometimes A student I finished this class with a C+. Would NOT recommend.
He has a thick accent and the audio isn't great in his online lectures however you can always go back and figure it out. Don't let the bad reviews deter you from taking his class, if you make an effort you will do well as he clearly wants his students to succeed.
Worst professor Ive ever had! Use old lecture videos , dont understand material he is talking about due to his heavy accent, not open minded when it comes to hear students feedback. No required textbook but give you all kinds of optional reading sources . You are just lost in his class, if you can avoid this class DO it !
Class is boring, rather watch paint dry. Goes off topic ALOT very unorganized slides very dry slides. Tests are extremely hard won't use the same vocabulary on the test as in class. Has an accent so a bit hard to understand at times. I would not recommend.
While I was excited at first to take this class at first, I soon realized it was a bad decision. He does not post his lectures, he has a very heavy accent and does not do a good job answering questions that are asked during lectures. His exams are incredibly difficult and many of the questions were not discussed during class.
I have never been more frustrated than when trying to decipher what this man is saying!!! It is not just the accent but he does not make things clear. Keeps saying "membrane", had me thinking he is talking about the plasma membrane, then at end of the lecture he implies he was talking about the ER membrane the whole time. UGH! He's nice though!
Dr. Anafi is a great prof, very accommodating, and wants his students to excel. Assessments are easy, quizzes/exam is all multiple choice and 4 very short papers (lowest grade of 4 dropped). No mandatory attendance for online lectures, therefore it's self-paced. I learned a lot of useful information from this course.
Informative and builds concepts as the course progresses. Fantastic teacher and hes video contents are so easy to follow. Overall, a great course to take!
Reading the past reviews I was very nervous to take his class but doing it online during covid makes it doable. He does not post lectures so you have to make your own but he posts his pre-recorded lectures. He explains very well but you need to understand your work. His exams are good if you study and connect each lectures to each other.
He teaches really well, has a good way of explaining stuff even tho his accent is a little weird. Tests are not that difficult if you go through all his lecture videos carefully and are fair game, nothing from outside of what he teaches.
Dr. Anafi is a good professor, He was highly organized during the course but at the end of the semester, we had a lot of reading to complete before the final, which was not really ok. The test was not expected, the first one was easy but as we continued, they got harder. Generally, he was a kind and respected person.
For BIOL2905 - RUN FOR YOUR LIFE!!! lmao no seriously do whatever it takes to avoid him. I literally thought I got the wrong exam bc of how unrelated it was to the course content. Every semester students start a petition regarding his exams & teaching style but nothing changes. Hes a nice person in general but idek how he got hired as a prof.
He's a nice guy. Lectures are straight forward. Some test questions aren't directly related from the lectures, but for the most part it is fair. There is no homework, just listen to his lectures and study them!
Doesn't post his lectures or any content to study from, and he tests on content not covered in class. How is one expected to do well in this class? Apart from the difficult to understand accent which is not his fault, I would say this is a professor whose classes I would avoid at ALL costs. You will bring your GPA down. Please avoid!
His thick accent makes it very hard to understand what he is saying, YouTube videos are outdated, tests never reflect material learned in class. Overall a horrible experience and would not recommend to anyone.
Prof is the best biology professor at york. Don't get it twisted, if you want a grade you need to study. He will give you everything you need to pass and you will see his passion throughout his lectures. He talks at a pace that will help you talk notes esaily, which means you can take down everything you need for the tests.
see the thing is, the material is a lot to cover in a short span and an unorganized asynchronous lecture video he made was not very helpful and made learning quite difficult. when asked about him sharing the ppt or other lecture resources he said the lecture videos he made should be good. The lecture videos were long & hard to understand
RUN!!!!! Probably the worst prof I've EVER encountered in all my years of education. Lectures are disorganized, lots of irrelevant rambling, and does not use a course textbook. Very lazy teaching approach. Just posts a series of youtube video lectures (yet doesn't even test from them). No other course content offered.. Nice person, horrible teacher
The absolute worst method of teaching combined with only 3 tests and a final exam worth 50% of your mark disaster course. I agree with my peers, the pre-recorded lectures were an absolute mess, difficult to understand, and pulls test questions out of no where. Not sure he even checked over his exam questions as many of them did not make sense.
Laziest professor alive. He does not bother to teach. Instead, he assigns the same pre-recorded videos he made years ago, which are unintelligible, and expects students to watch up to 8 hours of content in one day for 'class discussions. When we do have 'discussions' he is a horrible facilitator and goes off on tangents. 0/10. DON'T TAKE HIS CLASS!
Bad prof includes everything. He says he marks everyone equally but at the end of the class I heard him talking with students he will mark them easily. Also he talked with his favourites at the end of exams and how he will mark them more easily than other students. favourism in class. He make you feel insulted. Good reviews here-fake- from fav ppl.
In my four years at York University I've met some interesting profs but this one was something special. I am not gonna go too into depth on his character but I am just gonna say you can trust other reviews on this page. The course is not necessarily hard and most of the material taught is probably something you have seen before.
the test is nothing like he teaches in class. says his exams are lecture based but end up being random questions phrased horribly and with so many errors in the exam question! decent person but just not the best professor
This professor sets up his students to fail especially on the exams. He words his multiple choice questions very confusingly and has to clarify what he means during the exam. His class average is always around 60 and I highly do not recommend you taking any class with him. If you do, do not have high expectations for your grades.
Incredibly rude and dismissive i have no clue why he decided to become a professor. Has a very strong accent and is impossible to understand. Does all teaching through youtube videos and never responds to emails. No regards for students and whatever they might have going on in their lives. Extremely tough grader
Has two favourite students in the class whose questions he loves and everyone else doesn't contribute according to him. If you talk to him before and after class and ask random questions during the class, you're set for an A+!
All you have to do for this prof is watch his videos and do the tests. Thats it. No other weekly bullshit to submit, do your lectures whenever you want. Show up to class discussions when you want more info and you will get it. Great and efficent class. Accent takes a minute to get used to tho, but you get past that pretty quick.
Really heavy on lectures, w/ a thick accent requiring me to rewatch the lectures 2-3x to piece together what he was saying. If you dedicate time to doing the material & studying, you will probably be fine. I'd recommend taking it as a full yr course, it was SUPER condensed/heavy for a summer course, A LOT to remember for the exam very little time!
Literally leaves the course up to you. He tells you what to read and just leaves you to hang dry. That's not necessarily the worst thing but the simplicity of that teaching manner defeats the purpose of "teaching". He does not record lectures or post slides. The grade is based on 3 midterms and a 50% final, which can mess you up if you do badly.
AVOID THIS CLASSES IF POSSIBLE! He makes students watch his old lecture videos and leave all the learning up to you. Went to review my midterm and asking questions is PROHIBITED. He told me to write the question behind the scantron and MAYBE he will answer them. In my 4 years of Uni, I never had a professor this bad for me to leave a review on here
He said he was trying to do a flipped classroom when I took the class this year. Instead, he barely gave us any work to do, refused to answer questions of our owns because he thought they were beneath him, and shouted me down when I asked that we do more work in class. Refuses to let students see their tests after they write them, throws them away.
worst prof i have ever seen in my life
Avoid this professor at all costs! Its up to you to teach yourself all the content. His exams consist of questions that he does NOT teach in his lectures which is very unfair considering the amount of studying you have to do for his BS exams. His teaching style sucks and he does not post powerpoint slides! AVOID IF YOU WANT TO KEEP YOUR SANITY!!
I have never in my life found myself in a situation where I was so upset with a professor to where I took to this website. Does not teach in his lectures, uses lecture time to "answer questions" instead degrading students that did poorly. No compassion during personal crises, no empathy. The last straw for me to leave university, absolutely shaken.
He basically "abandoned" the class when the strike happened amidst the Winter 2024 semester. Lectures are extremely hard to decipher as he talks with a thick accent and slightly incomprehensive manner. His in-person lectures are hilarious though, as he likes to make jokes about the lecture material. Tests are extremely hard but multiple choice.
Do not take him.
This class was a mixed bag. The professor has a specific teaching style that doesn't work for everyone. Staying engaged and using study aids like unstuck ai helped me manage the difficulty. Overall, it was an okay experience.
Please do not take this course unless you are a biology professional. He does not teach and makes you watch hours of videos at home that explain nothing. He is very hard to understand. Less than an hour in, more than half of the class leaves the lecture hall, this should be a wake-up call!
Just do not take this prof's courses whatsover. He throws a bunch of content at you and doesn't care about your learning. Very unforgiving marking style with no room for feedback.
One of the worst prof which I ever had in my life. If you see his name then you RUN.
Personally he is the worst professor I've had for 3rd and 4th year, he does not teach very well and his tests are difficult. His tests are only multiply choice but he somtimes asks random questions and words them in confusing ways which throws you off. If you are not one of his favourites then you probably won't do well. Avoid his classes.
Very Kind professor, if you watch his lectures, that's all he tests from, especially examples and applications he brings up. Loved the tutorial-style classes, just go and ask questions. I would 10000% take him again. If you show up and put in the effort, you will be rewarded with him; he truly cares and wants to see his students succeed.
I took him in summer for a s2 term. Everything I have to say about him is the same as other ratings, but I just gave him 2/5 cuz he curved me 5 marks. His final exam was insane. 2 midterms 25% each, final 50%. He doesn't answer your question about the midterms. he is unavailable after the classes. Very rude and mean to us and TAs during tests.
Took him in the past but if you want to teach yourself an entire course with no help he's your guy. I managed to do good because I simply liked the content and learned most things from grade 12 bio. He seems nice I guess but attendance was 5% but he wouldn't talk about anything important during lectures, learned nothing during that hour and a half.
Prof is a bit rough around the edges. But he's just an awkward old guy. You want to pass this class? watch his lectures the first time and take notes. Then watch in 2x speed twice more like your listening to a podcast. Read the textbook when you're struggling on a topic. And genuinely try to be interested in what you're learning. Godspeed. :D
AVOID AVOID! He doesn't teach properly and his tests are heavy. I had class with him in the summer and needed the prerequisite for my 3000-level courses, or I would have dropped. I'm a straight-A student, but got C in his class.
