Awesome teacher, she makes her subject interesting and it's almost impossible not to get an A in her class. . .it's for a nonlab science. You actually learn things that pertain to you and your daily life she really makes u think!
great teacher, very helpful, makes a boring class very interesting, easy tests
Great teacher, very passionate about this subject but does not try to push her environmental views on others. She opened my eyes to a lot and I'm greatful. This class should be required for everyone!
She's really great and not some hippie!
easy tests, pretty cool lady.
barrows is the nicest person you'll meet and plus she has a great sense of humor. lectures are interesting and proximite. tests are easy if you study.
Great teacher. extremely nice. We watched movies pretty often on env problems. We wrote only one paper and it wasnt too tough. the paper was 6 pages on the same subject but you get 3 sources and write a 2 page response to each.
She's the best. Her classes are informative and fun. She's got a great sense of humor and makes the class go by quickly.
She is very hard, covers every factoid in the book, math required for labs, knowledgable and passionate- i tool 6 double sided pages of notes per 3 hour lecture! Do not nake this class if you have a heavy load of classes!
yea shes a nice lady ... but her tests were hard - i don't no if it was the way she worded the Q's but when we got back are tests no one around me had above a C-...just keep that in mind!
This class was a real eye-opener! I learned so much and I actually use the information in my everyday life. Barrows is a very good teacher, she is passionate about the environment so it makes learnigng the information fun and not at all boring. A lot of notes but I highly recommend this class!
She is a really cool lady. Class is very intersting. It covers alot of info, so tests are pretty hard. Gives easy homework and projects though, which makes tests not count as much- extra credit too. Easy to talk to.
She's really nice and knows her stuff. Tests are fairly difficult and she's not the easiest grader, but there are extra credit opps available. The material is potentially boring but she is good about making it fairly interesting, because she's passionate about it. This class will open your eyes.

If you can get past the squeaky voice, you are in for a treat. She makes a ho-hum subject interesting. Fairly easy tests (getting all As sh/be no prob for college bounders) and little homework. Labs were pretty fun. I really liked her.
Hardest tests. Thats what ruined the class for me. It's really not fair how difficult she makes the exams. The tests will frustrate you to the point where you start freaking out - just dont take her, the tests are THE WORST.
Just do the work and you will get a good grade
i wouldn't take this class if you don't have to. it is one of the harder classes i have taken at saddleback. her tests are very subjective and you have to do a big portfolio on an env. issue. sign up for something else.
She can be really helpful, if you go to class and take notes you should be fine. She also gives you a lot of extra credit opportunities! She wont bore you to death she tries to throw some humor in her lectures.
I wasn't interested in this prior, but i definitely learned a lot from this class that i normally wouldn't think about! She is fair, just do your 10 assignments, your oral presentation and portfolio, & 3 "midterms a.k.a. quizzes and you can pass. its simple: Do the work= EARN YOUR GRADE! ...same thing we learned in elementary school.....
Acts fun and helpful sometimes, then stone-walled and randomely upset at other times. Tests are subjective and graded harshly. Lectures are reasonable once you get past her voice, but be sure to take notes as not many things on her tests can be found anywhere in the relatively expensive yet thin course book.
Prof Barrows is a great teacher. She is passionate about her topic and lectures (although a little boring) are VERY informative. Her tests ARE very hard, but if you study you can do well. She gives lots of extra credit and the labs are interesting. Great lab sciece class for non science majors.
I like her. Save your 80 dollars...Don't buy the book. I haven't used it once. Its all about the notes and comming to class. Much easier than Physics, Chemestry, or Biology would be. Its got my thumbs up. You will have to study for the tests though, but c'mon you are in college :P
Prof Barrows is a wonderful passionate instructor. Her exams are not easy, but if you want easy, go back to high shool and stay out of college! Her knowledge on the subject is mind blowing. If you are really wanted to LEARN about the ENV, then this is a perfect intro class! She is amazing and quite funny. I will try to take all of her courses!
I loved both of the classes I took with her. She is very clear and keeps you interested. She provides more E.C than I ever saw in high school so you'd have to TRY to FAIL. If you need a lab science take Ecology. Its interesting and she never keeps you the ENTIRE class period. Some outside lab work required since she lets you out early. GREAT CLASS!
Prof. Barrows is wonderful! She is great! She really seems to appreciate student feedback about her tests. If someone doesn't like it, she really tries to fix it. She really knows the subject and the Labs are fun! She does give A TON of E.C. Points. You'd be stupid not to take them because the tests are hard (esp. if you don't study a lot)
first off..every comment here is WRONG..this teacher is by far the worst teacher i have ever taken at saddleback. About 15 kids dropped the class and her tests are nearly impossible to pass. She offered about 5 pts extra credit so if you think thats alot your crazy. DO NOT TAKE HER CLASS it is so boring and hard. do not take it!!!!!!
Fair grader.
Labs are fun and not hard at all. If you take good notes the tests are not bad. Easy B, have to put in a little effort for an A. Over 20 pts extra credit offered. You would actually have to try to fail this class. Very informative and helpful instructor. Always makes herself available if you are having trouble with any of the info. A+.
She gives pretty clear notes when lecturing. her tests are very hard to pass because they arent similar to the stuff in the notes. has given alot of ex.credit but its hard work to do the outdoor class room. there is one project. which is an 8 page typed on something to do with the enviornment.very time consuming DONT buy the book will not need!
I have no idea why some people are complaing!Barrows is one of the best instructors I have ever had. Very helpful and gives 20 points extra credit! Those who say her tests aren't like her notes must not read the notes ! All you have to do is show up and do the work! Isn't that what's college is all about anyway? It isn't highschool! A must take!
There are 2 midterms, a final, a paper, and critical thinking questions throughout the semester. Professor Barrows is pobably the fairest grader on her papers. I really enjoyed the subject material and had a lot of fun in class. She is super nice and you will learn a lot about human impacts on the planet
loveeee her. she's hilarious in her own way, and an easy grader. show up to class, take notes, STUDY the notes, and do the critical thinking questions. her tests are kinda whack, but she gives you some leway with extra points. i learned a lot and am taking another one of her classes next semester. i recommend her!
Very friendly teacher. Her tests are pretty hard. I studied and never got higher then a C. Theres alot of lab work but its extremely easy, and are easy points if you just buckle down and do them. If you turn in all the labs and take every test its impossible to fail, even if you do badly on them....
homework is time consuming because its all critical questions. claims her tests come from the notes and some from the book, but at times i wonder if she pulled them out of the air. syllabus will tell you what grade you want if you get the points. she is fair in that she doesnt deviate from her syllabus when it comes to getting the grades you need.
Easy, boring, all lecture, here tests are out there and ALL of it is HER OPINION. You have to read her mind to study for the test. She gives a review sheet that has barely any correlation with the test.
Dr. Barrows rocks! I wouldn't call the class easy, but it isn't hard if you actually review the notes, glance through the book. All tests come right from the notes. Makes time for you. Returns e-mails in a timely manner. 3 tests (include finial) tons of EC, Critical Thinking (easy). The subject is very intresting. Bascially, this class is a must!!!
Gives an enormous amount of extra credit. Easy class, labs are pretty basic and don't take up the entire period. Language is sometimes vulgar. A good person at heart. You learn things in this class that you'll take along with you in life.
Env Hazards was the easiest A. of her classes I have taken. Like with all of Dr. B's classes, just do the work. Offers tons of Extra Credit, some Critical Thinking (gives plenty of time for assignments) 3 tests (easy if u review) Test from lecture (book a good back up). She's very helpful and makes class fun. Best Professor in the school. Take it.
easy class. tons of extra credit. tests are hard, but just study and you'll do fine. by the way did i mention TONS of extra credit? shes really nice and easy going as well, makes going to class even better. labs aren't as long as you think, you'd be out within an hour and half the most!
Exams are difficult, but she offers enough extra credit to get an A by the end of the semester. Interesting topics and weekly homework. Presentation at the end of class was not difficult and she works with the students so they will get best possible grade available to them.
Green Living was the best class ever! Super easy. You have to be really lazy not to get an A. Barrows is fantastic and really wants you to know how you impact the earth. Practical, simple solutions that you take with you. Easy A, Fun, transferable UCs, and you actually learn something useful. Too bad not offered all year. Summer only?
this class was great, and it's 4 units so that's good. bring your laptop so you can take good notes.
She is a reasonable woman
she's nice... it's easy and there's lots of extra credit!
Her tests are extremely difficult as every answer is current just one is more correct..those are her words. She never referred to the book so you must attend class and take notes from her lecture. 1-page essays are due every week and extra credit is more writing assignments. She gives no feedback on how she grades the weekly writing assignment
WRITE DOWN THE THINGS SHE SAYS, NOT WHAT'S ON THE POWERPOINT. She usually repeats important information twice, so put stars around those things. Follow along the review sheet as you take notes. Labs are not long at all and usually fun. Hard class but easy to get an A.
She really cool have debates with, and she answers all questions. There are one page essays due every week. Do as much as you can on those. The paper is fairly easy. Take good notes and just read the power point don't write that stuff down. tests arn't very hard.
Dr Barrows is probably one of the smartest people I have ever met. Her lectures are amazing. She makes everything very interesting. She will tell you exactly what she wants from you and her expectations. Her test are very hard, which is the only down fall. There are enough assignments and extra credit to make up for it. She rocks!
Dr. Barrows is great! She's the head of the department and has a realistic approach to the environment.
DONT BUY THE BOOK, YOU DONT NEED IT
Great teacher. knows her stuff and makes it interesting. she's passionate about it. Can get a little long cuz it's just lecture, but it's not bad. she lets out a little early before lab. If your grade is high enough before final, you don't have to take it. tests are easy if you study your notes. tests are curved. she went to UC Davis! Holla!
Test are very difficult. She wants you to "get" everything from her brief and quickly spoken lectures.
I've had barrows for intro to env studies and alternative energies... she's by far one of the most intelligent people I have met... if you are interested at all in aspects of our environment TAKE HER CLASS! you will learn so much!! do the work and you'll get an A.. favorite professor i've ever had.
makes everything very clear in her syllabus! basically live by that and you'll be fine. she wants answers to be through and you'll get all the credit. offers lots of extra credit. i enjoyed this class and found it interested and relevant to life. doesn't have patience for stupid questions. i didn't talk that much but listening was cool
very good teacher overall. cracks plenty of jokes to keep you interested. enjoy this class alot. tests aren't hard at all. average for tests was somewhere around 84 or so. very intelligible about almost everything you could ask her. book is expensive(100) havnt opened it ever. study the notes as is and should be easy B if not A. Take it if u want t
do not take this class in summer unless it's all you do! theres a minimum of 20 typed papers due, almost 1 everyday! she has little patience and is sort of rude, but very informative.I worked my ass off to get an A in this class i think the average was a C,great class but really demanding and she can be mean sometimes!raised hands = insults!
i took this as my only summer course and the homework ate up all of my free time ( i also have a job). One page paper every night, plus 8 page paper due by the end of the semester, and another 2 page paper for the final. Don't buy the book! The exams are easy, just take notes and you'll be fine. She kept my interest in lectures.
true there is a lot of work for a summer class and the tests are kinda whack but she grades fair and gives lots of xtra credit. lectures are very good, she keeps a good pace and covers alot of area. good sense of humor and a class all should take!
I took her Green Living class and it was fun! We didnt use the book at all so dont waste your money. It was an easy A, as long as you attend class and pay attention to the lecture there is no need to study for the final exam. The 3 writing assignments range from half a page to a page. This is a interesting class, and an easy A!
she made this subject very interesting for me. I took this as a condensed course and i had to devote all my free time to the writing assignments.
shes super clear in lectures and even though it can get boring i loved the class. it was really informative and the professor was great. she gave super easy tests,at least in the summer course and i definitely recommend her for summer since it goes by fast and she told us she makes it easiest in summer.
Do not buy the book. Take lots of notes -- that's what her tests go by. She plays favorites isn't ashamed of it. I personally didn't like her "My word is law" teaching style, but apparently some people do. Easy class if you know how to work and study; crap professor.
Don't buy the book you for sure don't need it. I loved this teacher and it was my favorite class I have yet to take at Saddleback. Test are really hard but she offers extra credit to make up for them. I would strongly suggest you take her class!
Tests are pretty tough, but other wise, I really enjoyed this class. No homework (she leaves that to John, the lab teacher) and plenty of opportunities for extra credit. Plus, students with perfect attendance get a prize at the end of the semester, which is pretty cool.
Interesting class, lots of useful information. Books for class were a good read for the subject matter, but not needed for class
Barrows is amazing, super funny and nice. Her lectures are entertaining and very straightforward. Tests are easy and straightforward, she is a fantastic teacher!
Great teacher. Fun, friendly, energetic. Keeps the class interesting. Perfect attendance results in extra credit and an eco-friendly prize at the end of the semester. Not very difficult, one project, couple extra credit opportunities. Great class.
Fantastic class. Barrows is extremely well educated, and it shows in her lectures. I took the class in 8 weeks, a lot of material to cover in a short time, but it is presented in a clear way. Attendance is mandatory, test questions come directly from material in lecture, highly recommend taking clear notes. Lots of extra credit.
Really easy class. She is knowledgeable, informative, and helpful. Don't buy the book, you won't need it.
Environmental Law and Policy. Barrows is extremely well educated, shows. I loved the class, great discussion, although it is very easy to get off topic. The course is comprehensive, so be prepared for lots of detail. Homework bad, she just want you to think critically. Extra credit=A. I'd take any class she offered, but i'm going to Montana.
Oh my goodness! I LOVED this class with Mrs. Barrows. She is so funny, and really knowledgeable. You have one speech you have to give, but if you plan out your points right for grading, you don't have to do it and still pass with an A. But then you just have to do everything else for the class.
She is a really cool teacher, knowledgable, funny, down to earth, and her method of teaching is easy to understand. Not thrilled about giving a presentation to the class but that's because I'm not into that. The presentation is only 5 minutes so it's not bad at all. Overall great teacher.
As long as you show up to class and do well on tests, along with the portfolio you should do great. Its a very interesting class and she teaches it well.
Her knowledge and passion for the subject oozes from her teachings. She makes the class very interesting and really opens your eyes to our environment. She can be rude or sarcastic once in a while, but she is mostly nice and very funny! You really have to work for your grade, but you will get SO MUCH out of the class! I loved it. Recommended!
Very passionate teacher. I view the world differently. Shes a great teacher who is clear and gives lots of extra credit. Tests are hard and theres a page long critical thinking question. Not too bad of a class at all. You get points for attendence so go to class!
I took her Alternative Energy Technology class as a Political Science major and the subject matter in combination with her teaching of the subject made me pick up environmental as my minor. Mandatory attendance, 2 exams, 1 final, 7 critical thinking questions and some field trips. Easy class, decent amount of work.
Failed all of the tests, passed with a B. Do the labs.
One of the best teachers at saddleback, she loves what she teaches and is really passionate about the subject. Making it a really interesting class. The lab can be boring and seem childish but it gets fun as the semester goes on. You really have to study for the test to get a good grade.
Amazing professor! Really knows her stuff and it shows! She gives out a ton of extra credit and if you do all of it it can bring you up an entire grade level. I didn't open the textbook once the entire semester so getting the book is not necessary. I passed with over and A+ because of the extra credit. Take her and you will not be disappointed!
Yet another great semester with Prof. Barrows! She will make you interested in Ecology by the time you finish the semester and is a teacher truly passionate about what she teaches. Fun and chill teacher to have. Book is not needed. TONS of extra credit. Does take attendance. Very easy class if you understand the concepts well. Highly recommended!
I enjoyed this semester. Lots of extra credit. Prof Barrows uses powerpoint almost exclusively, and if you take notes and study them, you're golden for the tests. Easy class and I definitely recommend!
Her lectures are very interesting and informative. She speaks clearly and isn't confusing..except with her tests! I studied and never got an A on any of the tests. If you think you did well on the essay questions, think again. Got an A in the class but only because of Lab & extra credit.
Dr. Barrows is one of the best teachers you will ever take, anywhere! She is highly educated, passionate, hard working, and more than fair in her grading. She is not easy - and she shouldn't be. But if you do the reading and take advantage of the extra credit, you should get an A. The variety of classes she offers are the best in the state!
I took this class in 8 weeks. This teacher is friendly, but a hard grader. You have to attend every class and take notes on everything. You have to do a 1pg single spaced paper twice a week. There is a 8pg single spaced paper that she grades very hard. The midterms and final do not come from the book so in order to study you must have all notes
Very interesting class. Was told to take it by a counselor and I'm glad I did. Professor Barrows covers very cool topics and shows how complex and cool ecology can be. Offers a lot of extra credit and the exams are straightforward. Take her and you won't regret it!!
Professor Barrows is the best professor at saddleback. I took ecology and environmental studies and got an A in both. She offers tons of extra credit and makes the material super interesting because its obviously her passion. I will miss her dearly
Barrows is such a good lecturer and is passionate about Ecology which makes going to class fun. She is a fair grader and offers so much extra credit you could O.D. on it... I know I did...got 101%. TAKE BARROWS.
Barrows was a great teacher! She is very smart and knows her facts! I passed the class with an A without purchasing the book. I recommend doing the extra credit she gives you because it helps out a lot in the end. Really enjoyed her class!
Great professor. Lecture is easy to understand (if you pay attention). Tests are easy (if you've paid attention). Assignments are simple. Plenty of extra credit opportunities. No need to buy the book (if you pay attention). If you can't do these, you're going to have a bad time.
Barrows is a great professor. Just took her transferable ENV18 class and will get an A. Do every single lab and do all the extra credit and you can get an A for sure. I learned a ton in this class and ended up loving it because of both Prof. Barrows and Prof. Richards. They are a hell of a team.
Dr. Barrows is an excellent teacher who really cares about her students. The class is pretty easy if you put in the effort. The tests are difficult, but fair. She gives a lot of extra credit. Do all the assignments, and EC and you'll do good. She keeps it interesting, and the lab w/ Richards is great too. Good class. Best Prof at Saddleback
Dr. Barrows is awesome. The class is intersting and she's pretty funny. Do the work and pay attention and getting an "A" shouldn't be too difficult
Dr. Barrows class was very interesting. shes really nice and loves ecology. I never used the textbook. the midterms and final questions come straight from her lectures so take notes. I intended to major in business, but her class actually made me consider changing my major to an ecological or biological science major.
By far the best teacher Ever! I can't wait to take one of her classes again!
Best professor I've ever had at Saddleback. To pass: 1. Print out study guides & use as a map when taking notes during lectures(I got an A on every single exam) 2. Go to lecture everyday, the materiel covered is not found in the book. 3. Ask questions after/during class if you need clarifications on a formula etc. She's interesting, funny & awesome
Dr. Barrows was great ! I would highly recommend this class, very interesting, easy to understand. Tests were substantial but everything on them is discussed in class, and she gives you time to write down all the notes, which pretty much tell you everything you need to study for the test. If you understand the lecture, you should do well on tests.
Make sure you do all the extra credit!!!! Her tests are super hard and I failed every single one. But i only passed cause of labs and extra credit.
Dr. Barrows is a super nice and funny woman. Lectures aren't bad & Hw assignments are 1pg response papers that you could answer in a paragraph. What really got me however is that every single paper you write for her has to be single spaced so I found myself "fluffing" the papers alot to fill out the space. Huge 8pg single spaced paper in the end.
If you attend class, you will do well on her tests. However, you can do poorly on the tests and still get an A in the class as long as you do well on the lab reports and do the extra credit.
Mrs. Barrows is a wonderful lady, she truly cares about her students and is straightforward about what will be on her exams. Use her study guides!! This course isn't too bad as long as you're diligent about studying.
I only took ecology to fulfill GE requirements, but I enjoyed the class. Her material is easy to understand, but her tests are really hard. She has a total of five tests and I got 2 Cs, 1 D, and two Bs on them. The only reason why I passed the class with an A was because I did all Richard's labs and the extra credit. Not easy, but doable.
Her and Professor Richards were great. Take if you need to get your science out of the way. Doesn't take attendance just has you sign in, but most of the test questions come from lab and lectures.
Barrows and Richard's class, in my opinion, is the best science class you can take for your lab science course. They provide interesting, detailed lectures and labs on various topics. Attendance isn't mandatory but if you show up to every lecture you are rewarded. They are by far some of the best professors I have taken at Saddleback.
She is an absolute sweetheart and cares so much for all of her students. Prof. Barrows is the way to go for any ENV courses that you can take under her!
GREAT teacher! Took this class because it was required, it is now the end of the semester and I am so glad I took it. There are 3 tests, 1 project and 8 one page paper assignments. They're super causal and based on your personal opinion. Very passionate about what she teaches. Tests are easy, I never studied and got high B's on all! Def reccomend!
Be ready to learn. Professor Barrows is a professional at what she does. Listen, take notes, and most importantly, STUDY FOR YOUR EXAMS!!! And you'll be ok!
I LOVE her, haha shes funny. So passionate of the environment and i have learned so much! this class should be required to take, you would be surprised of what you don't know! 3 exams, 10 Crticial thinking questions and a portfolio. Just take notes and be a sponge in class, you will be just fine:) I'm an env studies major so ofc i loveeeee
She is very professional! It is kind rare to find professor nowadays, in my opinion. She is caring, fair, cute, super smart, and strong. She is a inspiring person. Tests are not too easy, but we are here to learn, so make sure take notes of her amazing lectures and study, you will be just fine.
Hands down one of the best professor's I've ever had. I was not excited to take this class because I thought it was going to be very political. Prof Barrow's does an amazing job at not pushing her opinions on the class, instead, she gives pros and cons every issue discussed. SHE'S AMAZING!! I learned SO much in this class and it made me more aware
Never had a professor like her but shes honesty the best. Very passionate about the environment. Her class is easy I did meh on the midterms and didnt even showed up to the finals and got a B because she offers a lot of extra credit. I really enjoyed her class and you dont really need the book. There is hw due every 2 weeks but its really easy.
Professor Barrow's tests are based off of the lectures which she does not post. It is very easy to follow along and do great in the class as long as you show up and take notes. She is a very sweet lady and you could tell how passionate she is.
Probably one of my favorite professors I've ever had the pleasure of taking. Her lectures are super interesting and her class is pretty much an easy A. I learned so much from all the classes I took with her and I am now actually considering switching majors because of her and her classes. Take her, you won't regret it!!!
Have had about 10 classes with her, due to my major being env. studies. From ENV101 to the more obscure classes like Environmental Hazards. By far the most passionate teacher I've met in my field. Her passion for Planet Earth will leave a mark on you. Not for the faint of heart. Most classes have to do with Earth's destruction, as well as man's.
She's funny and smart but she doesn't post her lectures online and they're super long, filled w/ information and tedious. She's likable but only talks about all the terrible things that is going on in the world. Some of the things she talks about I look up on my own and find out they weren't that bad like she said. super hard tests.
Best professor I have ever had! Her lectures are so informative and amazing, and she is so passionate about the world. Show up to class, write down what she says, don't write her lectures word for word, and ask for help if you need it because she is extremely helpful and caring. Usually 3-4 tests, a final, and maybe a paper (depends on the class)
This class changed my life! Dr. Barrows is funny and puts a positive spin on a lot of depressing topics. She's able to talk about controversial issues without diving too deep into her own personal beliefs. 3 test's that can be tricky, but simple if you understand the topic. Lots of chances to make up points with Critical Thinking Q's & extra credit
Dr. Barrows is welcoming and accepts different points of views, her lectures invite discussion among students. The work is simple as long as you listen and take notes, however be prepared to do double the work, because everything is single space typed. The 8 page (16 page double spaced) portfolio is a major headache, not too complicated though.
Really nice professor, cares about her students. Easy homework, when class got switched to online it was seamless and went well because shes dope.
Professor Barrows is an amazing professor! Her lectures are super important and have all the info, so make sure you attend. She is super professional and skilled in her field. She kept lectures fun and make sure to ask questions!
Barrows makes her lectures interesting and has a real passion for what she teaches. Her lectures are a bit hard to take notes off of, but the tests are rather simple and easy if you study. Suoer nice and would advise anyone to take her class
I took ENV1 in fall 2020, and enjoyed it a lot! Professor Barrows is a very kind woman. She was willing to work with me a lot when I had troubles completing certain assignments after my dad fell sick with cancer. Her lectures were SO engaging & interesting! Lots of reading and writing, but it made tests easy! Highly recommend, very good class!
You can tell Professor Barrows truly does care about her profession and her students. Her class is not hard and she gives great feedback as well. Get your assignments done and prepare a little for the exams and you'll do great!
Professor Barrows is a great teacher. She is understanding of unusual circumstances that may happen from time to time but strict enough to keep you honest.
She is great but she is really picky towards small things, especially her DBs since it is the only thing that is counted towards the class (unless you are also taking the lab) her exams aren't worth as much but you still have to study for them because there are 5. Got marked off on a DB for not having 75words ops and you have to be very detailed :)
I honestly dont like Professor Barrows at all. She does not give good feedback at all, in fact she is a bit rude. It is very difficult to have to read everyones DB and make sure youre not writing the same as them, even if you didnt copy or else you will not get full credit.
I only took this class for credit, as it is not related to my major, but it was very easy and manageable. Make sure to put in effort on the discussion boards and critical thinking assignments, and you will do great in the class. Overall, Barrows gives good feedback and regularly updates her grades.
Professor Barrows is the best. As a Environmental Science major I took multiple classes with her. She is passionate about the subject matter and always ready and willing to help with whatever she can. Class is straightforward and easy to understand what is expected of you.
Dr. Barrows is an amazing professor and -without a doubt- you can tell that she is not only just passionate about her work, but she is also passionate about the information that she teaches Lectures are very interesting if you are willing to engage yourself in the class. Very little work outside of DBs and CTQs.
she will give you points off for something that was her mistake, out of a whole class, if you even share the tiniest similarity in your post there goes 5 points. Trust me, you need those 5 points, do all the extra credit because they are 5 points, making your grade even itself out. only took this class cause anthropology was much worse
will mark your points off for something that she said wrong, trust me you need those 5 points. Do all the extra credit because they are worth 5 points making your grade even itself back out. I only took this class because anthropology was much harder, hated this class the whole summer
Amazing professor who is clearly passionate about the subject. Great lectures. One thing I do wish is that she touched on how racism and capitalism also affect the environment.
Questions of 4 exams are meant to be tricky, and misleading,8 page portfolio was too complicated because it was too broad I wish she specified the topic to make life easier. every week critical thinking paper. You have to put your mind and heart into this course to get an A, she doesn't joke.
I do not know what Professor Barrows would be like in person but online she was a hard grader to be honest. I put in a lot of effort in the discussion posts and sometimes would leave with a 5/20 and it got kind of ridiculous. Lectures were downright boring, and her feedback was minimal. I wouldn't take her again but I guess I was on her bad side.
She was phenomenal and very excited about her subject. Always welcomed discussions and answered every question.
This class was relatively easy and somewhat interesting to follow along. My only complaint was the 8 page SINGLE SPACED research paper at the end of the semester. Most time consuming essay i've ever had to write.
Extremely energetic professor. Ask about some of the species she has worked with in conservation and you won't be disappointed. If you pay attention and ask questions when you are confused, Barrows is more than happy to help explain things in a different way so it will hopefully click. Very knowledgable and I have taken several courses.
Not an intersectional view of environmentalism being taught. Writing projects are long and tedious. 8 page SINGLE SPACE paper will be graded extremely hard with little to no feedback. You will have to put in a LOT of work to get an A, be forewarned.
Excellent overview of the environmental impact of human activity. Gives students basic grounding in relevant science, history, and policy. Nice mix of exams, written discussion assignments, and essays. Some extra credit was available also. Her narrations of the lecture videos were clear and conversational.
Dr. Barrows gives fascinating lectures and is a joy to talk to. She has vast knowledge about the field and is experienced at navigating the workings of the college. The five exams are strictly based on the lectures, so attendance is very important, but that makes it easy to get away without ever reading the textbook. I wish she also taught the lab.
She is a great teacher w/ good lectures. She gives loads of hw and is not good with responding back to students. I recommend taking this class if you fs have the time outside of the classroom. She does move onto topics pretty quickly so don't be distracted in class, also not the best at responding to questions about asgmts/directions. TAKE NOTES
Great professor! Funny and easy to get along with. The course was relatively easy, tests were not. No matter how much studying I did, I always ended up with a lower grade than expected. Discussion posts are easy to earn 20/20. Definitely do all the extra credit. Very lecture heavy, take notes ALWAYS.
Dr. Barrows was one of the worst professors I have ever had. Her voice seemed forced and lectures were boring. She doesn't even show you the correct and incorrect answers on a test which is corruption. She just uses the same ones and therefore is very lazy and just ultimately has bad energy. I would advise that you avoid her classes at all costs!
Engaging lectures, though assignments can be quite challenging. Leverage study tools like Unstuckstudy alongside the textbook to stay on top of the workload. Attendance is a must, but the professor is receptive to questions and discussions.
Great lectures, broken down in subjects. Very detailed, easy to understand. Gives great feedback!
The lectures are engaging and encourage participation, and the exams are entirely based on in-class material, which makes it easy to perform well with consistent attendance and good notes. The portfolio paper can be confusing, so I recommend attending office hours to get help. Dr. Barrows cares deeply about her students and the topics she teaches.
Prof B is super responsive and gives great feedback. She wants you to do well. Class is mostly discussion posts and lab reports; it's a lot but doable. Final project is a choose your own adventure and was very inspirational. Left the class proud of my work and thinking more deeply about the environment!
I highly recommend Professor Barrows as an environmental teacher. Be prepared to pay attention to lectures, if you don't, tests will be very hard to pass. Assignments are easy and I thought she was a fair grader. She gave an amazing speech on the final day of class that still sticks with me.
I had no idea what to expect from taking environmental studies. Dr. Barrows knowledge and engaging lectures were not only informative, they were transformative. I ended up making different choices about things I use in my house and having a newfound appreciation for all the ways pesticides, etc. impact our immediate environment - great professor.
GO TO CLASS!!!! she loves what she teaches and it shows. The assignments consisted of 9 critical thinkings and 3 exams all based off her lectures. Take good notes because she doesn't provide alot of information nor the slides on canvas. Content is easy to understand and I would easily take her again.
I really enjoyed her class and learned a lot. The reading assignments and videos can be a bit long, but the homework is pretty easy, and if you make a mistake, she won't give you a bad grade, she just takes off a few points and explains what you did wrong. If you don't know anything about ecology and need a lab class for the GE, take this class
Dr. Barrows is a well of knowledge in her field! She has a lot of passion for her work. The class can get a bit repetitive/boring, since there's lectures every day, but I didn't think the content was too difficult to understand. Exams are closed note, so take good notes and study them!
