So unorganized! For an online class, I expect the teacher to be organized, post due dates, and post grades for assignments. Maybe she would teach better in a classroom, but the online class is a nightmare.
I really disliked this class. It was super boring! I guess I would say it's pretty easy because you only have a couple writing assignments and there is no final only an essay. But It's just a super boring topic and the teacher is boring.
This professor is really intelligent, she has background knowledge from previous jobs. Her class is pretty easy because there are only 4 writing assignments and one essay for the semester, no tests. However, her lectures are a little boring, also some topics are difficult to understand. Overall, it is not a hard class, but it's the funnest class.
The class lectures for some topics are on hard to comprehend topics -- maybe b/c its a critical thinking class?? But if you pay attention and go to office hours for any extra tutoring, then you'll do fine. She is willing to stay after and make appointments to meet with you. Don't miss the attendance and participation points!
She is helpful, but you have to ask. Also, she doesn't use all the Bb functions so you better reference the syllabus like you would in a classroom. Interesting topics and easy readings. She definitely makes this a writing class with weekly writing assignments.
She showed us how to use a few different critical thinking tools, but we used them by studying the criminal justice system and human violence. It was really cool to use the tools in a practical way with lots of examples. She expects you to read for every class, so don't show-up without reading. You do in-class activities and those are ok- I get why
She was super confusing & didnt explain things very clearly. When i signed up for this class i didnt expect it to be about the justice system. I expected it to be about women hence womens studies but that was the thing we talked about least. She has you read sooo much and I dreaded taking the tests. Luckily i came out of there with a B.
Dr. Young is cool. She gives you a lot of examples of society so you really get what the reading is about. She asks students for their opinions too. The topics makes sense when she breaks them down. I like her overall.
She's a good teacher. She seems to care about students doing well because she'll let you work to improve your exam grades if you didn't do well the first time on the exam. Overall, good class, interesting topic, and I did improve my critical thinking skill like the class focused on.
Morghan's class was super interesting and I loved it. The topic is overall interesting and she doesn't have any exams besides the midterm but she has little quizzes that you need to write short responses. The final was a partner presentation. She is extremely nice sometimes she acts like a student so she's comfortable to be around.
Interesting class would recommend to someone. She's very clear of what she wants goes over everything and if you don't understand ask or go to her office hours. Work is not hard. You have to keep up with the readings to understand everything.
Really knows her stuff!
She was a great teacher, great lectures! It was a GE class for me but overall, i was truly impressed with how the semester went! Super easy. Learned a lot of new things as well, NEVER a boring class! Not essential to attend, but very helpful if you do. I'd recommend this class to everyone and anyone.
An amazing professor. She is very nice, funny, and her lectures are very interesting. Plus, she gives tons of extra credits. Overall, a very easy class to pass. Attendance is not mandatory but she does do random attendance check for extra credits.
2 take home exams really easy from material in class, 2 pop quizzes from the readings that you are assigned from the syllabus and mini group work in class. If you have problems in life she CARES! She's not a hard professor at all I'm 20 with two kids(2 year old and 10 month old)If I can do it with two kids you can do it too! Read and come to class!
She is a very classy, respected woman. She always helped students be clarified when things were confusing. She responds to emails within 24 hours. There are pop quizzes so make sure you read what is asked of you before class starts (the articles aren't that long). Just go to to class and you'll get an A. She covers a lot within each lecture.
She is an amazing professor! She is very passionate about what she teaches and she knows her stuff. I respect her very much! great woman
Dr. Alfaro had us reading very new topics -- religion in terms of indigenous European beliefs, shamanism, hallucinogens, and so on. Intersting, but graduate level readings, I think. She does give lot's of feedback and tips for actually improving my writing; I did become a better writer after taking her class. I also know a bit more about religion.
Pop quizzes! She makes you actually read stuff before coming to class or else you won't do well on the pop quizzes. She seems very interested in making sure students get it, understand what's going on, not just finish the lecture. She's also overall nice but serious about the topics.
She is a very intelligent person with a good sense of humor. She makes the class interesting and truly wants all of her students to succeed. Read the class material and you will get an A in her class.
Dr. Alfaro was a very unclear and unprofessional professor. She gave her students a non clear understanding of her assignments. Half of her students would fail her analytic memos(she made a graph to show us). She did not show that she cares for our well being as a student. This class is not only difficult but unfair. Avoid her if possible.
Dr. Alfaro is an awesome professor, she knows her stuff so well. Her class is very engaging and she makes the class very entertaining. She has so much information to teach and provide to her students. She does have a lot of reading, however if you read you should be fine. She is very understanding and communication is very easy with her.
My experience with having Dr. Morgan Alfaro as a professor was not delightful. She isnt clear when explaining her assignments at all. She also has given me attitude various times throughout the semester. She is not willing to help you at all. She also seemed very bias towards men. Shes a feminist who expresses her views about women everyday.
Dr. Alfaro does not seem to carry a professional attitude throughout the semester. She tends to have an attitude towards specific students while playing favorites with other students. My experience with her was not very pleasant. She overloads students with homework(readings) and does not show any empathy towards students. She is also unclear.
She is one of those smart professor who carries an attitude that KNOWS she is smart. Class can be fun depending on the reading. Grades super hard, but does give lots of feedbacks. Lots of her assignments are unclear. You learn as you go. Although this was a decent class I would not take it with her again.
This is a writing class and she makes you read and write a lot. If you miss class you'll miss a pop quiz or what she calls a "reading check." With a full class load, you probably won't want to take this class. I was happy to do so well in her class because she makes you actually improve on understanding a lot of things.
She's funny most of the time, but also makes you think hard. Can't skip class because you'll miss important info that you need for understanding the next thing. She gives a lot of individual feedback -- at least to me and that was great. I did get better at writing!
Online classes are sort of hard as it goes, but Dr. Alfaro sends weekly check-ins and video explanations of topics. I'm not joking that this class was 100% new to me: I didn't know anything about anthropology, religious studies, or writing the way she taught. So I'm stoked that I did well, but I had to actually carefully read everything.
She's cool. She wants everyone to understand or like data like she does. You literally must know the data for the topics you study. You have to write about data, explain data, and so on. She will meet with you outside of class as much as you want. She will also straight-up address comments or crazy things students sometimes say and I respect that.
I wasn't sure about this professor at first. But she grows on you. You can tell she cares. I thought that online would be good for me, but it's too much work to not be able to ask questions to a real live person. I did well in her class and she gives specific feedback so I could improve in my writing.
Dr. Alfaro is a great professor. I loved her style of teaching, however, she is a tough grader. Be ready to read before every class. She has a midterm and a final. She does reading, attendance, and pop quiz checks all of which your grade really depend on. She could be rude at times but overall was a pleasant professor.
A lot of online classes are a breeze, but this one wasn't. She gave me individualized comments like with a video message to me to explain feedback and where I was with my grade. That was a surprise. A professor has never sent me a personal video message before. She's big on following the exact assignment instructions and the grading rubric.
This course covers very interesting material; however, Dr. Vélez made this course a hassle. She is challenging to get a hold of and is disorganized. But, if you do get a chance to talk to her, she can be very helpful.
Dr. Velez Young is helpful and helps you if you need it. She understands that COVID effects us, and she also understands that we have more to our lives than just Fresno State. However, she still expects a lot of you to get the reading done every week. Her assignments and tests come exactly from the weekly readings and lecture videos.
Dr. Vélez Young watches to see what the students need -- we have a student Q&A section where we can post things and she's in there checking on us. That's cool. We always have weekly tasks. There's never a down time. Interesting topics, but sometimes hard to get. I would take her again now that I see how things go for an online course.
This course was rather disappointing. The focus of the class was not about religion, but the persecution of women through the ages. The texts that she assigned were incredibly feminist leaning and derogatory toward men. However, the writing skills she helped teach were very applicable. Knowing what I know now, I would not have taken the course.
This professor makes this class way more difficult than it should be. She is very unorganized and doesn't update canvas very often. She expects you to abide by the syllabus and only the syllabus which is confusing. When asked for help she's more interested in the way you address her than helping you. Absolutely horrible. One of the worst professors
Took this online. Assignments were not clear and she did not explain how to do them good. pay really close attention to assignment details, if you do not do it right she will fail you. I took this class just because it knocked off two sections of general ed but if you are not a strong writer like me I do not recommend.
Her quizzes were confusing, but once you adjust it gets a bit better. Quizzes are open notes cuz she lets you see the questions before submitting and you have like 4 days to do it. Also read the book, the wording isn't too hard. She gives lots of easy extra credit and just try on the paper as long as you follow the guidelines you should be okay
Dr. Velez-Young is a respected expert in the field of Antropology. She is compassionate and readily available to help out students. Don't get me wrong, she will make you work for your grade but what is the point of college if not a time to challenge yourself and learn? Quizzes + midterm were open notes since she let us look at the questions advance
future students please listen to me... Do not take this professor. In my five years of being at Fresno State I have NEVER left a rate my professor until now. Please save yourself the headache and additional stress and do not take this professor. If you miss one criteria in her rubric it seems like the best grade you can get is a C at BEST!
The professor says exactly what to do for every assignment, there's a rubric, there's a Q&A area for clarification. I think she gives too much detail, but maybe that's good for students who need it. You always know where you are with things and how to improve. This class was hard bc I was new to anthropology plus writing is not my strong area.
If youre new to anthropology, then you have to first understand that before being successful in the class. Also theres a lot of writing since its a W. If you have to prioritize a class, do it here. You have to spend time reading everything bc you have to write about it. I learned the most in this class, but it is not easy.
Absolutely horrible and a waste of time and money. This professor has one assignment that assigns reading notes on an 80-page presentation that she wrote. Her feedback on essays is minimal her responses to emails are pretentious. If you have nothing going on, no social life, and no other classes and want a challenge take this class. Steer clear
This is a writing course so writing is implied; however, she was extremely nit-picky about the content. This course required a LOT of reading. The layout of the course on canvas was confusing. She did offer extra credit which was an upside.
The only burdensome thing about this class is the amount of writing, but that's obvious. There is a ton of reading, but you do not need to read anything in advance for any assignment, even the final. She's very nice, a lax grader, and offers plenty extra credit. Not an easy A, but a guaranteed one if you are deliberate in how you spend your time.
Textbook is book she wrote so she grades essays heavily. Gave me F on one ass because I did not show my face in a picture so I failed the entire class. Rude and blunt comments if you email or ask questions.
Good professor, but the writing is way too nit-picky for what is required. Too many readings for limited prompts. Very accessible outside of class, but it is very easy to fall behind. You are forced to buy one of her books (little egotistical) and constantly use it. You HAVE to reach out to classmates outside to pass and comprehend everything.
Dr. Young was easy to reach via email. Her instructions were often unclear/vague and she would not clarify more if asked. I had a 100% in the class until the last 3 assignments she decided to grade very tough. She is looking for exactly what SHE wants although her instructions are vague. Prompts are very hard to respond to and A LOT of reading.
If you take the online course be prepared to read tons of material and watch 2+ year old lecture videos that do not help at all. The grading rubric is extremely basic and the material on how to write an essay is all supplemental outside the class. You're forced to buy her book or risk losing out on doing 80% of the reading assignments.
Easy class if you read every week and use all the materials in Canvas. Q&A spot for posting questions and getting fast responses. Gives lots of feedback, kind of surprising bc I haven't had professors give so much feedback before. I'm definitely a better writer now. Learned a lot of new things I didn't previously know about the legal system.
Was recommended their class. Straight forward as long as you read. Responds to questions and gives feedback. Learned more than I expected. And there's extra credit which is helpful because I don't have an anthropology background.
Clearly was looking to do as little work as possible for a course, as she was available for zoom two weeks out or over email within two full days. She took a long time to grade and give feedback on things. She failed to consider an issue with submissions to canvas that hid submission content after a preemptive email about the issue, dropping grade.
This is an online class, and everything is VAGUE. You are required to buy all the reading materials and within the reading materials there are pages missing. The assignments were unclear and some of the reading materials do not provide the necessary information to complete each weekly essay you have to write. I would not take this class again.
Old, recorded lectures that are not very informative. Your writing prompts are based on outside texts that are difficult to understand and access. Without the help of my classmates, I really wouldn't know what I was doing. Never provided feedback in a timely manner so you couldn't fix your mistakes prior to submitting your next essay.
I don't usually write, but I see someone has a problem with her making us use her book. Seems like jealousy and not valuable, the prof is also really hot and probably gets shade just for that. I'll keep using her book bc I'm a crim major and her book is crim data. Overall, good class and she seems like she really wants student to learn.
Professor is very hard on grading. If you ask for any help she has you going to a "discussion board" to ask classmates for help.
LOTS OF READING! Online course = self teaching & asynchronous TEST/Quiz/Exams = ALL written exams 350 - 500 words each (open all week) TIME MANAGEMENT IS KEY!!! back to back due dates 350 - 1000 words and work cited, may vary per assignment, Grading criteria was hard to understand AAA (chicago style) format for all papers and assignments. EC helps!!
Too many unnecessary readings. Read reports and chapters that were never tested on and wasted my time that could be used on other courses. Grading is difficult to understand and feedback was too late to be able to improve on for future assignments. WAY TOO TIME MUCH READING USELESS ARTICLES!!
My biggest complaint was the amount of useless readings we had to do that we were never tested on and the weird style of writing she had us do. Overall, the class is easy as 65% of the students are either at a B or A. Just follow her template and don't stray from it.
Do not take her if you want to pass. I finished the course with a C and I was so excited because this was one of my hardest classes. WRONG. She failed me for not meeting the word count. If you do end up getting stuck in her class do not expect her to help or answer any of your questions you're going to get a lot of your help from the students.
Absolutely far too difficult for an online GE class. Gives less credit than deserved. Feedback is short, not helpful. Unless anthropology is your future career, stay away.
Easy is you keep up week to week. For upper div, weekly assignments is fine. Lots of writing, but it is a W. As long as you pay attention every week, you'll be fine. Grading is clear bc she uses a check off list, pay attention to that - there's a check off list for everything.
I was nervous at first cuz there so much that I didn't know like how to write and anthropology the discipline. I should have met with her sooner cuz I was on track and doing fine. You'll be all good if you do the assignments and reading every week, don't put off a week and try to catch up later. There's also extra credit.
A lot of reading and writing but that the point of this class. A fair grader and gives a lot of good feedback and some extra credit as well. Overall would take her again and assignment not hard if you read the contents she assign.
She is a very tough grader. She assigns a lot of assignments, and you have one to two every week. Diagrams and questions are the easiest assignments, along with annotating the weekly readings. The quizzes and the final and Midterm can be hard, but there's a lot of extra credit given. I highly suggest you do them; it will save your grade.
She gives way too much reading for a class that is irrelevant to your major unless you're an anthro major. I was stressed more from her class than any other class I was taken. Her directions aren't clear and she doesn't give direct answers when you ask her. She tells you to go to the discussion posted in her modules, when she can easily just answer
Easy if you're used to reading an article or chapter every week. No biggie really. It's a W course, so of course we had to write almost every week too. Very provocative readings. I actually learned a lot. You can work ahead if you want to and she will meet with you one on one if you want.
I didn't know anything about the class, but I actually learned something. She will schedule office hours around your schedule if you want so that's cool. We had to write a lot of papers bc this is a writing course. She seems to care about students. She sends weekly messages and videos to say hi to the class. Overally, I'd take her again.
The professor requires you to read a textbook that has little to no evidence, and is instead entirely focused on a completely seperate body of work. If you are interested in anthropology this is not the class for you, be prepared to read biased sources that hardly address the prompts. Not for anyone who cares about the sciences.
Guidelines for assignments are vague. Lots of reading and annotations. She didn't put the names of the books in the instructions, you had to go on a wild goose chase to find them. Tests were ok. This professor is very apathetic. Stayed up until 4 am on the day of my MCAT doing my essay for this class because she refused to give me an extra day.
Do not recommended taking her class. Hefty assignments with little to no instruction. She is the hardest grader I have ever seen and her class seems more like she's trying to push her political beliefs more than anything. Take anyone but her for this class.
Rough grader and the details on assignments are unclear. Reading notes are incredibly tedious and are not to be procrastinated on. Multiple essays, a mid-term, and final. Nothing too extreme as there are plenty of easy extra credit opportunities. Take advantage of the group discussions as well as extra credit can be awarded for helping others
Easy. Just writing is hard with my time management since its a W. Recommend staying on task bc each week sets you up for the next week. Would take again.
I took Anth 2 over the winter. She had our Canvas organized well, I could find everything which is really important because there's not a lot of time in this class. Some of the assignments (like diagraming words) I hadn't seen before, but I got the hang of them. She seems nice and I appreciate being able to take this course during the winter.
Overall this course wasn't too bad and is easy if you actually put in effort, it consists of multiple quizzes which are just writing a short essay on a topic given, 6 note taking assignments, and one final that is 2 short essays. She gives a lot of extra credit opportunities that are very easy! It can be annoying to find the required readings.
It was fine. Stay focused so you don't save things until the end. I had a medical emergency at the end of the semester and she helped me figure out how to still finish everything. I appreciate that. Sometimes, professors aren't easy to ask for help.
The professor makes Canvas have everything. I recommend choosing a day every week to do work so you can go through the readings and assignments. I tried to go in and out but changed to going at it with one day and that was better because my brain could focus on the topic and write about it. Lots of extra credit to help if you're new to topics.
Summer consists of essays and busywork. Easy but annoying.
By far the worst professor I have had in college. This class did not help me with my writing whatsoever. She gave very harsh feedback with little instruction and then complained how over the years students got worse at writing due to AI. Every essay had an average of at most 60%, which means at least half the class failed. Stay away. DO NOT TAKE.
she doesn't teach and grades late
I'm a serious, motivated older student, but this class was frustrating. The professor is strict yet unclear, and feedback on her stringent essay format took the entire semester. I emailed her several times asking for help and she was rude about it. The content was interesting, but I had to figure it all out on my own. Great material, poor guidance.
She is awful and talks down to students like we're stupid. The worst professor I've had in my 4 years of college.
The syllabus gives a fair warning for Christians not to take the course. She indoctrinates her ideology over anything. Spent 90% of the course explaining how White people are the issue in the world. Very opinionated, and assignments are based on her opinion alone. Perfect example of the indoctrinating professor.
By far one of the worst yet. If you're reading this, simply just dont take her course. Theres other courses with different professors that you will receive an A in. STAY AWAY
Worst professor at this University. Her teaching needs to be evaluated by admin.
Lots and lots of reading. Will not make exceptions fro late work unless you have a signed doctors note, harsh grader.
This teacher struggles with details. How many points is the class worth? 600? 750? a million? She doesn't know. She readily admitted that she's given students with B grades Ds in the gradebook. She is also prone to retaliation. If you correct her on something she'll never give you assignment credit again, and will refuse to discuss on record.
Good overall.
Wish I had started strong because I did great at the end but walked away with a B. Thought this was going to be about watching videos and taking mostly quizzes.
Took as a condensed summer course (i.e heavy homework) Focuses on race ideology. Amazing course.
