Great professor; he helped to clear up a lot of things and gives good advice. I'd recommend him to everybody.
He has a great sense of humor, but when it comes to the material, make sure you've done all the reading because he does not explain things well enough to completely understand whats going on.
good and amusing teacher. he's young and very educated. he sincerely cares about his students and is very approachable.
his lectures are funny once in awhile, even though he doesn't truly explain everything. But he makes it up with his cute look...
Maduro cares about if the students are learning in his class. GO TO HIS OFFICE HOURS! cant stress this enough. He is a very approachable professor... you will never feel intimidated to come up to him. study hard for bio 5A. and remember: INTEGRATE YOUR MATERIAL FROM BEGINNING TILL THE END!
Good professor but makes a few too many jokes (the immature guys in the class all love him for it!) Doesn't explain the material quite and thorough as one would like. Talks fast but is very approachable and considerate. I would reccommed Hyman over Maduro but both working together were great
Very helpful teacher during office hour and very considerate. He's very funny and make biology less boring than it seems. If you are computer literate person, you will love his analogy. Looking forward to having him in BIO168.
First teacher that didn't make me feel stupid during office hours. He truly cares about the success of his students. Very friendly in his e-mails and etc... If you like MP3's and know a lot about them you will love his lectures. He always relates the subject material to MP3 files.
Professor or stand up comic? Take your pick, he's great at both! Hands down the nicest and most entertaining prof I've had at UCR, and he knows his stuff and (I think) explains it well too. I wish I could steal him over to the college of engineering...
Bio 168 materials are hard, but it's very interesting. He presented the lectures very well and his good sense of humour keep you from dreading going to class. Approachable and extremely helpful during office hrs.
Funny guy, talks fast, tests are tricky. What is covered the tests is the points in lecture that he doesn't emphasize. Do the reading, always.

Loved this professor..he's simply the best at 5A..and if you're complaining that he's hard try taking another professor..you'll come running back to Maduro. He gave me hope that I could accomplish anything when I had been struck down by Hyman's advice. Made the class bearable and made me have the confidence to succeed in the class.
GREAT PROFESSOR + like to use computer related vocabulary/analogy to explain
Hella funny!! I guess compared to Dr. Hymen, he would be the hip one. One class he actually free-styled to an eminem song.. haha what a nerd. But besides that, he makes lectures really interesting and understandable. Review lecture notes and read!! Office hours are really helpful too.
Really sarcastic, yet teaches very well. Thinks the top students are not social or not cool, yet his analogies relate to ipods and gossip. He's ok.
At first I thought I was going to hate biology, but Dr. Maduro made everything awesome. His tests are very fair, and he is extremely helpful during review sessions. He is very knowledgable and he is a great asset to UCR. He also cares a lot about the students. We need more professors like him.
Great teacher, easy to understand his lectures. His test are clear and straightforward. defiantly would recommend to every bio student
Pretty easy going guy, pretty sarcastic. His lectures are understandable, but when it comes to the midterms, its like you never have taken the class. He says all the material comes from his lectures and lecture notes (he is against using the book), but apparetly not everything is from his lectures, which fraustrated me. Better than Dr Thompson thou
great class, great professor. there are some days when i wouldn't feel like going to class, but would go anyways because he made it fun. he's funny and helpful. TAKE THIS CLASS! and if you keep up with the reading, it's pretty much guaranteed that you'll get an A.
Greatest professor and funniest. He is a fair grader in this course but the material is not easy. His notes are clear and straight forward but it is a lot of material. Tests are not difficult and average was in the 75/100 range. By the way, bring the clicker.
Along with Dr Thompson, I loved Maduro as a professor!! he is hilarious and seems so so smart and just listening to him lecture is entertaining. I never missed a lecture, always looked forward to lecture, never looked at the clock and I definately hope i have him as a professor again.
Awesome teacher! he is so funny and will keep you awake the whole lecture. His tests are tricky so get a good feel for his style with the clicker questions and quarter midterms to prepare for his exams. I'd recommend him to anyone.
he is a good professor but relatively fair on the midterms and final. he knew exactly what he was talking about and taught it really well, but the final was really hard. it had stuff that was not covered in class. really study hard if you want to pass.
Great and funny lecturer. He knows his material and teaches it the best way possible. The course was difficult and tests were a little tricky. Overall, if he had not used clickers I would say I loved the course. However, he is one of UCRs best professors.
His tests were difficult, but if you study you can do really well. You will get out of this class what you put into it. He is a great guy. Sit in the front and get to know him. He is really generous with his curve... especially if he knows you. This class was amazing!
Expects a lot. but its good for your own understanding of the concepts. as long as you read and work hard this class will be a breeze. curve was nice. had this prof along w/ Cardullo and i would recommend this class..
This guy is great. A lot of younger professors don't teach too well, but he is REALLY good. And he's funny! Never a dull moment. Make sure you understand concepts and themes and don't just memorize. He understands the subject can be dry and finds a way to make it really interesting. Also really helpful in office hours.
He can be repetitive during lecture, but he actually understands the material so he expects you to understand the material as well. Don't expect to memorize the conceptual things because he expects you to actually understand it, otherwise you will not do well in his course. The curve is not that favorable as well.
Maduro is the best bio teacher period.. He's very clear and concise on what he teaches. You have to know the concepts in order to answer his questions. Questions aren't tricky in any way and are straight forward. All the answers look good to someone who doesn't know the material. I'd definitely recommend him to everyone. He's hilarious too.
Professor Maduro is great. He really knows his stuff and he expects his students to as well. Read the textbook after lecture to clarify everything. He tests you on the concepts so don't just memorize everything. He's super funny and his class was a joy to attend.
Funny and never dull. Approachable. Knows his stuff and gives fair tests. Definitely utilize the book! Supplement lecture notes with reading!
I loved his teaching style and it is truly a unique experience compared to any other course. You truly get out what you put in. Probably the hardest multiple choice I've yet to take, but if you stay on top of the material you should be able to take on the midterms + final. Great class though, super interesting and very fair.
Awesome teacher, The other half was taught by Ray who completely sucked, but this guy was great
Dr. Maduro expects a lot from his students, but he cares a lot about student success and will help you as much as he can. He moves very quickly through lectures, but he posts notes before class. Pro tip: print them out and follow them through lecture. If something he says isn't in there, write it down. It's the best way to keep up.
Dr. Maduro is a very good professor who keeps you interested and cares that students succeed. His notes have a lot of information, and it is pretty much necessary to attend lecture in order to really understand, but it's worth it with him. He makes a difficult course much more enjoyable.
Professor Maduro expects A LOT from his students. Too much for a 10 week course. He talks extremely fast, so print out the notes. The quiz questions were ridiculously specific. Even though the midterm and final were mc, there were the ones with multiple write answers. IMO Biochem series was nothing in comparison.
He is a very eloquent speaker, and very good at lecturing. He has one of the best attendance among any big lectures that I've ever seen. In terms of difficulty of exams, he purposely makes his exams somewhat tricky, and truly expects the student to have mastered the content.
One of the best prof out there but you have to understand the material to do well in class. Simple memorization wont help so you have to stay on top of your studying. Exams are extremely fair and reflect what was emphasized in class and practice questions. Attend the office hours because he is really helpful. Highly recommended!
I took this class two years ago and i still love this guy! honestly my favorite professor at UCR and my favorite course even though i received a B. Test are demanding and he does put a lot of focus on the causes and effects of certain events. His lecture notes are better than the book and have almost everything you need for an A.
If you take his class, be prepared to work. Hard. However, if you do you'll come out with an incredible understanding of the material. Caring, engaging, approachable. Very human. My favorite professor. I wish he taught engineering courses. Book is useless, UTILIZE HIS RESOURCES!!
Hands down the best professor at UCR and my favorite I've taken so far. If you really enjoy biology take it with Professor Maduro. He really makes you work for your grade, but he's an extremely talented lecturer and gives so many resources to his students. I loved every single lecture of his, and wish he could teach the whole bio 5 series.
Dr. Maduro is a very good professor and is very engaging during lectures for bio 115 human genetics. The material is actually interesting and he explains concepts well. However, the class itself is very difficult and takes a lot of effort to pass. Clickers every class, however you must be present to get the points. Avoid if u want an easy A.
BIOL115(Human Genetics) with Prof. Maduro was one the most interesting classes I've taken. This professor has very high standards, but really does care about his students. If you're interested in the subject and ready to make the time commitment, this class will be very rewarding. If you're simply looking to get an upper div easy A, look elsewhere.
Man was this a difficult but interesting class. Topics were current and up to date which made the class interesting. Maduro is a really good and engaging professor. Exams are very difficult with averages in the low to mid 60's. However, he does have a pretty nice curve at the end.
Dr. Maduro is one of the best professors Ive had at UCR. This class has a lot of information but everything was fair. He provided detailed notes & explained things really well. Tests reflect the notes and lectures. He prepared you well, it just took a lot of time & effort on your own. Overall interesting human genetics class, and great professor.
Dr. Maduro made this class so enjoyable. It was really great learning about all the genetic diseases and how they are passed down from generation to generation. He gives a lot of pop quizzes, though, so be sure you are on top of your material. Clickers are required. Gave a little bit of extra credit at the end. He is a very fair professor.
WHY AM I CRYING IN THE CLUB RN??? BC THIS PROFESSOR IS AMAZING. Y'ALL WANNA SURVIVE IN BIOL 5A?!! WELL TAKE THIS PROFESSOR. I'm actually really sad that I can't take him for the rest of the series. He doesn't like the lecture style, so he posts videos online. And boiii let me tell you. They helped so much. Use the resources he gives you!
By far the best professor I've had at UCR. He knows his material and is very good at explaining it. He's easy to talk to, and he's hilarious. It's not enough to memorize information, you MUST apply that information, which makes his class on the more difficult side. Wish he taught all my classes honestly, I'd probably have a better understanding....
By far one of the best professors I've ever had. He is respectable, his online notes are extremely helpful, and I actually retained the information he taught. I would definitely take the class again. However, do not procrastinate in studying for his final. The final drop me down 6 percent in the class.
Toughest multiple choice exams ever. 55-70 avgs. Felt like a verbal section of a standardized test. Massive critical thinking required. Prof meticulously crafted his tests for deep understanding, WILL try to trick you, as good tests should. Rigor required comparable to elite schools. Very enthusiastic and jokes around with self-deprecating humor.
Maduro gives out notes, powerpoints, videos, past exams, etc. Human Genetics is hard and I wouldn't take it if you got a low grade in intro genetics (bio102?),. But the classes are super interesting and entertaining and his style/humor made me look forward. The exams were challenging, but the curve at the end was generous, the ave. was around a B.
Short videos instead of lecture the BEST format for 5A! The videos have questions to keep you paying attention. He still runs an optional class which I attended but most of my friends didn't go. The exams are challenging, but no more than those of other bio profs & he gives a ton of old exams for practise. Great class, wish 5B was like this.
Professor Maduro was one of the best professors out there. He is so organized and if you have any questions he is there to answer them for you. Gives you so many resources to help you prepare for your midterms and final.!! 11/10 for this man. HE IS AMAZING! PS: He is also an amazing singer, look him up if you have the chance to!
best professor I've ever had. it takes studying to get an A but its really easy to get a B. PAY ATTENTION TO THE ONLINE LECTURE!! go to actual lecture if you can because he gives tips for exams and explains things more in-depth
My class was a hybrid class so attendance was not mandatory and his videos could be watched at your own pace each week. His videos were very well put together and sometimes very interesting to watch. Although I did not interact with him much, the times that I did he was very helpful and funny. For sure a great addition to UCR.
This class really taught me so much. The test were difficult, but it is possible to get an A. Maduro really wants you to understand the material and if you don't then you won't do well . First midterm was easy, the other two were okay. If you focus and really put in the work then you will get an A. 97 1st Mid, 86 2 Mid, 88 3rd Mid, 66 final.
This human genetics class was amazing. This is a course I waited my whole undergraduate to take. Prof Maduro is really knowledgeable and gives students his own textbook. If you have a solid backgound in genetics and intro bio and are willing to put in the work, you can do well. Definitely not an easy A though.
I had to re-take Bio 5A. The first time I took it was in Fall 2017. It may have been 2 years, but I feel like I really understood the material and content a lot more this time with Maduro because of how straightfoward the videos were and the optional midterms and finals.
Maduro made this really awesome type of "lecture" by making lecture videos on ilearn. You just watch and answer questions as the video progresses which really makes you pay attention. It was a really different experience but it was super effective. *Fair warning* he will roast the hell out of you if you ask a dumb question during lecture.
The WORST. Please avoid at all cost. His exams are impossible
Genuinely a very good teacher. DO THE PRACTICE TESTS. His tests are challenging because they force you to really KNOW the content, but not impossible. He seems to have a pattern to the types of questions he asks and on which parts of the lecture as well. Three midterms, so your grade has lots of chances. End of the day, you get what u study for
Maduro is a very informative professor who is passionate about what he does. However, he has an ego. If students are struggling, he blames it on us and doesn't attempt to help. Taking this class in the middle of a pandemic and riot showed his true colors. Called us names and yelled at us. (Look at the ucr reddit for more opinions)
obviously a very intelligent teacher but his ego gets in the way of it. makes things as hard as possible & doesn't want people to do well. he lets his pettiness get in the way of what is fair for the students. avoid at all costs!! unnecessary stress for such simple material, especially during remote teaching. got mad bc people complained.
horrible. save yourself and don't take him.
During the Pandemic he made his tests twice as hard which is understandable since most students will cheat with open notes, HOWEVER, along with increasing the difficulty of the exams he failed to adjust his notes and video lectures to Complexity of the material in the exams. I dont recommend.
This class has been one of the most interesting classes I have taken so far. Maduro is very prepared and provides MANY resources that will help you perform well in the class if you use them. Study the practice exams. Create study guides from the lectures and videos, and put in the time to study. The class was very difficult but very rewarding!
Horrible professor Extremely Rude Huge ego AVOID
DANGER!!! This is an awful professor who derives his feeling of self-importance from giving students a hard time, and he bitterly resents those who end up doing well in his classes - like myself. He is a very deceptive person, and does a good job of appearing to care about students. Avoid him at all costs; fail to do so at your own peril.
I would say that this class is not an easy one per se. Professor Maduro is very funny and accessible. No textbook required because he writes his own "textbook", more like notes really. Read through his notes. Do all the sample exams. Going through the exam questions, you will find his pattern of questions. Once you get that, you will be fine.
The class for me was difficult. At a glance I was confident however over time I realized his set up was not for me. The lecture videos I feel do not give enough information to properly apply towards the in-depth exam ?s. Thought there are many resources, some questions I noticed were a bit inconsistent between practice and real exams.
It was great not having to sit through lectures and doing short videos on my own time. Duh it's a pandemic folks, the exams are going to be harder because he said they would be un-proctored and open-book, and students think they can do well by cheating instead of actually studying.
Professor Maduro's tests were the hardest tests I've ever done. They did not have much to do with the lectures. The lectures were videos which was nice, but each lecture video contained (on average) 3-6 questions to answer for points. These questions were super difficult to answer, especially since we learned these concepts only 30 seconds earlier.
Bruh, you have to be out of your mind to read these most recent reviews and decide to take this class. Took this in Spring quarter during pandemic and tests were the hardest I have ever taken in my life. Tests were meant to be extremely tricky and he made his own questions so they were 10x more confusing. Used crazy synonyms in tests to trick us.
unless you want to spend all your time studying and learning basic bio just to do horribly then i would not recommend
Worst teacher Ive taken at ucr so far.
The short videos worked for me. It's hard to sit through an hour of any class on Zoom. Tests were tough cause you actually have to understand the concept . The questions were all different, a lot of students got mad trying to get answers with chegg or google and ran out of time. If you let yourself get bored and stop caring youll do bad!
I had a 56% average on the exams and got a B+, so who cares if the tests are hard. The average grade was a B, so as long as you were at the average you were guaranteed a decent grade.
The summer class was not that tough? Midterm exams had averages 63%,61%,62%, so maybe he's lightened up since spring. It was awesome not to have to attend the class and he provides his own 100-page notes that he wrote himself.
He give sout his own textbook and practice exams. YOu have to go to the class because there are quizzes for points, but most of the time you can work with other students. Topics are super interesting and this class is a must if you want to apply to medical school.
Only the top 15% get an A- or A. This makes a terrible learning environment. Pitting student against student disappoint me. Exams are unreasonably difficult & do not follow the class. Do the extra credit paper. Fairly unfair in general especially considering COVID. I'm scared to get help because of the terrible learning environment. BEWARE!
Professor was rude and condescending in OH and lecture. Exams and quizzes were unnecessarily difficult. He does supply a lot of extra material that makes the class doable, but I couldn't stand getting steamrolled every time I had a question.
This class online was the absolute worst class. You don't have actual lectures, you have prerecorded videos. Videos are ranged from 5-15 minutes but taking notes takes so long since info is crammed. Tests are extremely hard, no backtracking allowed. Tried to talk to him in OH and he wasn't helpful. Test averages EXTREMELY BAD AND LOW.
He gives good resources. Like past exams for midterms 1-3 and the final. They span from the most recent all the way to 2017. He is extremely generous with this, even posting practices quizzes for each topic, all in the same style the exam would be in. If these are used effectively (not only just throwing time at it), you will succeed in this class.
This Professor is hard. I am an A and B student and I received a C in this class. Maduro made this class way more difficult than need be. Even when I read through the provided notes multiple times, took the practice quizzes, and watched the videos repeatedly I still failed every test. Additionally, he is rude and condescending.
Prof Maduro is fine at what he does and his class is difficult but not completely unmanageable but WOW is he intrusive. Profs have the ability to check student activity on canvas and while most use that feature they arent as psychotic about it like maduro. I mean that man made it clear several times he tracked ALL our movements. It was unsettling.
His midterms and final were difficult. Averages ranged from 55% to 65% but he curves the class and he offers a lot of resources to study. His exams are really based on his lecture notes and his lectures build around that. He went easier with the exams this year because were were in person.
He sets you up to succeed from the start he provides multiple past midterms, and finals and he also has a huge curve to the point where its almost impossible to fail. The 3 midterms are hard but if you study they arent as bad as people make them out to be. Go to office hours as often as possible they are a HUGE help in understanding the material.
Contrary to what most people have to say about him, Maduro has been an excellent professor. He provides MANY resources for you to learn. These include practice quizzes, online videos, past-exams w/answer keys, and his own set of notes covering the whole class. Take his bad reviews with a grain of salt, his midterms have all been straightforward.
Professor Maduro was one of the best professors i've had. he gives you everything you need to succeed including, his own personal notes, tests, and supplementary videos. Tests are quite information heavy but as long as you do his videos and go over the notes, you will be fine.
Maduro does his lectures in the form of short videos online. It is really easy to fall behind but if you stay on track you should be able to do good in the class. Studying his prior tests and quizzes will help you do good on his tests.
I took this class asynchronous and it was basically video recordings that I had to later then answer questions about. I enjoyed the class and how it was structured. However, the difficulty did not same consistent throughout.
Professor Maduro provides excellent study resources like past exams and practice quizzes. While the tests can be challenging, using tools like unstuck ai along with the available materials makes succeeding in this class very doable.
Dr.Maduro is a knowledgeable professor and class is very interesting. All about genetic diseases their mechanisms and treatments. However, this class is very DEMANDING and TIME CONSUMING. SO if you are taking other demanding classes during the quarter it's gonna be ROUGH. You need to be constantly studying for a good grade.
Awesome, engaging, passionate, knowledgable, funny, great professor overall. Loved everything about this class and had some of the most fair exams ever. 10/10 very charismatic speaker
I loved the in class activities and the plethora of practice question we had available to us. Professor was very fun and engaging. Supplemental materials were nice to have. I loved this class and have been recommending it to everyone I know. The guest speaker genetic counselor was great and helped me discover a career path I didn't know existed.
