Gold = Major control issues however you will learn from him, dont expct good grd
Extremely tough, and he gave me a low grade, but he might be the most intellectual professor I have ever had. I am glad I took the class despite the stress and the C because it was amazing having a man so scholarly teach me.
tough grader. expect to really work in his class. intimidating but very smart. you will learn alot.
I had Dr. Gold my freshman year and was extremely intimidated but after a couple of classes I felt very comfortable and enjoyed the class a lot. He is very smart and is willing to help a student if they ask for it. Work hard and you will get a good grade.
Sorry, but Dr. Gold is a little too ridiculous in his grading. Insightful but not a well rounded professor.
I've never learned so much in an english class in my life and worked so hard either! He's incredibly tough, a little arrogant, and never hands back any papers or gives out ANY A's but he will challenge you and teach you more than any other english prof.
Brilliant. Yes, he's tough, and yes, a little intimidating, but it's worth it and once you get to know him it's just like any other class -- only you learn so much more and think so many different ways. Eng majors - don't leave FU w/o taking him!
Ahhh. Grades really rough. If you ask anything, you get a question back and will probably have to look it up and present it to the class. Gives different work loads to different classes. Kind of unfair.
Tough, insightful, but not worth it if u care for the grade. Definetly has favorites and his idioscyncracies can drive u crazy. Want an intellectual challenge take him, but only Pass/Fail and dont expect any positive feedback(papers returned sparingly)
He is the worst teacher I have ever had. He makes you feel like a moron if you ask anything in class and makes you look it up for yourself. He never hands back any papers and not a single person in the class has received an A. STAY AWAY.
GOLD IS THE DEVIL! While some say he taught them much, he has not taught me anything. Homework is full of pointless busywork, and the essays are graded with terrible scrutiny. I have not receieved an essay I handed in 1.75 months ago! DONT TAKE HIM!
Worst teacher I have ever had! Gives busywork for homework and is very sarcastic. If you don't know something he makes you look it up. Still waitng for an essay written over 2 months ago. Do not take him!!!!!
Fabulous! You will never work harder or learn more. I'm an English major, and he taught me how to read.
Class was TORTURE! Non Eng Majors be prepared for Hell. His twisted way of forcing u 2 learn embaressed me everyday.Asks u to interpret single words & pics u wen he knos u don't kno the answer. Made me feel like an absolute moron. AHHHH
This guy is aweful. I honestly feel like I've learned NOTHING of value. Classes bore me to death b/c he drones on and on about a single work for days on end. He wonders why people are absent all the time-maybe it's b/c we hate his terrible class! Avoid it

Difficult teacher, but class is totally excellent and valuable
Avoid this teacher. He never returns any papers and he grades them unfairly and way too harshly. No one did well in this class and he never answers questions. This is the hardest class ever and it's impossible to do well, hes is one of the worst teachers.
I HATE HIM. i hate his class i hate everything that deals with this man. never take him unless you like torture and hell. he doesnt like anyone and he makes people cry
He's hard, but as an english major I found him to be the most rewarding english prof I've had thus far. Don't expect an easy A (I worked my butt off and got a B+) but expect to learn a LOT. Also, don't take him if you're sensitive or can't handle sarcas
very hard. unclear, lacks direction. always sarcastic, rarely availible during office hours. tough grader, never returns papers. arrogant and full of himself. doesnt give a lot of work but work can be difficult. boring class and gets bogged down easy
Gold is terrible. He never returns anything, even if he promises he will. Gives vague responses, asks questions instead of giving answers. Sarcastic and vendictive. Assigns busywork and loves to hear his own voice. If you like hell, take the Devil's class
incredibly hard class with incredibly rough texts, but very smart man and nice one and one. a little weird but he just wants to challenge u. good class if u really want to learn. can only take from class if u apply urself.
hard, but he knows a lot. he is worthwhile to listen to, no other teacher could possibley give you so much in another class. he is absolutley brilliant.
it is very difficult to get a sastisfying grade in his class, but i went in knowing that i wouldnt get an A and i was ok with that. by far the most valuable prof ive had yet. he forces you to answer your own questions by guiding you in the right direction
Dr. Gold is one of the best professors I have had here. He challenges his students on a regular basis, and only settles for their best work. His sarcastic sense of humor is enjoyable and passes class time. You will reach your full potential as a writer
He is the worst teacher at Fordham.Returned 2 papers out of like 10.A dark and weird personality. You really have lil incentive to do alot of work B/c u wont get higher then a B.The 1st paper he gave back the whole class got C's and c+'s. Horrible teacher.
good teacher. hes so hot. so hot. that makes the whole class fly by.
He is a very good professor and all freshman should definitely have him; I wish I did my freshman year. This class is not for babies. I was open to so many different perspectives, There was much too much material for one semester.
He can seem intimidating because he's very intelligent and a TOUGH grader. However, as soon as I started going to his office hours, I found that he was a really nice guy who wants his students to understand the material. He does give out As, but rarely.
one of the true teachers you will ever encounter.
If your up for the challenge, take this class. He is the best prof. I have had yet. Class is interesting and goes by very quickly. I highly suggest this professor.
Moshe is the best! If you are willing to change your writing and LEARN something, I highly recommend this kosher prof.
very smart, and a good teacher, but very tough grader, if u can take a b- or c+, u should take him
Moshe Gold challenges the students who care to learn more than any other professor at FU. What a life-changing experience. Be willing to critique yourself, listen to others, and REVISE your work. Come in with an open mind and SEEK MOSHE'S HELP. Take advantage of his incredible professorial skills and personal approachability. What a guy.
Dr. Gold is very unreceptive during class and it is difficult to participate b/c he does not give a lot of positive feedback. He is a very hard grader, and even with going to office hours and trying to readjust papers, many people STRUGGLED to get B's in the class. Not a very rewarding class. You put in a lot, but don't get a lot.
Dr. Gold is a very hard professor, but he pushes you to be the best writer you can be. I struggled to get a B, but the way I go about writing an essay has completely changed! He will teach you a lot!
sucked, everything about it sucked

I will never take another class with Dr Gold because it's just not worth it. He's such a smart man and even though I learned so much, I worked the hardest I've ever worked for the worst grade of my college career. He's not worth the stress, I thought I could handle his class but I was wrong.
VERY tough. Be prepared to work your butt off. You NEED to go to every class and read ALL the assigned hw. Going to his office hours is a chore, but it's worth it. You'll learn a lot, but won't get higher than a C without putting in a ton of effort. P.S.: don't worry about the quizzes.
he is pretentious and self-absorbed (ie doesn't realize we have a life) but an expert on joyce - lots of reading. 2 papers. 1 class presentation. don't take him if you're not that interested in the subject. i wasn't and now i dread sitting through class.
Very difficult. You can't skip the readings and need to attend class. Although you need to work your butt off, you learn a lot about the subject. Worth the stress if you're interested and want to learn. Likes to make students uncomfortable, though.
i don't know how i got through it... but i did and i learned a lot. i've heard he's the hardest theory teacher at fordham, and i wouldn't doubt it. go to office hours. and work your butt off if you have dr. gold. study with other people. misery loves company : )
Horrible. He is absolutely horrible. Take this class if you want a C as your final grade for english - and for mountains of homework throughout the semester. I tried so hard and studied so hard for this class, but ended up with the C+ everyone got. He's horrible, for the sake of your existence, don't take this class.
By far the hardest teacher I have ever had yet also very rewarding. Grades very hard, no one had above a C+ the entire semester. Will teach you everything you should have learned in previous english classes. Te of teacher who is just too smart. Take this class if you want to learn and can handle a hit in the grades.
A difficult prof, but also one of the best. He's a terribly difficult grader, but your writing will improve in ways you'd never imagined by taking him. He's difficult, but for anyone who cares to learn, it's more than worth it. If you want an esay A, don't take him. If you want to become a better writer & thinker, he's the teacher for you.
I often wonder if FU was worth the fortune it cost me, if all the profs were like Gold it would have been worth twice the cost. Unfortunately few are, only Suarez is on par. Close reading with him is like boot camp for english majors, but take his Horror and Madness in Fic and Film course to enjoy the ligther side of this mad genius.
Professor Gold is easily my favorite teacher at Fordham. He pushes you to work hard and write better essays. I did all my work and didn't miss a class so I got a B+. Awesome teacher.
Professor Gold is one of the most challenging, engaging professors. Yes, he is tough, gives a LOT of reading, demands much from his students. But he is approachable and makes the work intriguing. He answers questions and makes you think. I learned more in one class than I did during my entire undergraduate career. He's pure gold.
Even though he is a difficult grader, you will learn so much about writing. I've wanted to be an English major for the longest time and he saw my passion and knack for literature, and has been encouraging me to pursue it. He is extremely helpful if you go out of your way for it. (WHICH YOU SHOULD!)
One of those professors who is just too smart for his own good. I can appreciate the material he teaches, but the classes are scrambled and his lecture style is more like yelling. Didn't improve my writing b/c I didn't get the paper back til a month later. Purposely gives impossible work/quizzes/tests - decent guy but definitely not recommended.
A memorable guy full of contradictions. On the one hand, he is an amazing teacher in terms of the way he presents the material, but he gives an OBSCENE amount of work. I feel like the amount of stress this class caused me has left a scar forever in my life. Also, he is very unfair at times. Still, he is funny and cool, and you'll learn a lot.
Not done with theory course yet, but thought I'd weigh in: very good in front of the class and you really learn a lot, BUT did my writing improve? Not really, didn't get papers back. Did I have waaaay too much reading? Yes. Were the quizzes unfairly hard? Yes. I'd avoid him, but there are some decent things to take away
He tries.
Nothing brazen about Gold. He's some of the best Fordham has got to offer. The workload is heavy and attendance is necessary because his lectures are consistent and unified; too many absences and you will find yourself hanging by a thread and sorry. This man is a mad genius, don't know how so much can fit into one head haha. Very cool too.
The quizzes aren't hard if you do the reading, and you'll most likely find the reading interesting if you are an English Major... as the course title would seem to suggest that you are. Don't count on feedback being prompt, but he's always available in his office. Fascinating and endlessly knowledgeable. Do yourself a favor and take him for Theory.
Honestly the best professor I've ever had. He gives a lot of reading but his lectures are great. Be sure to participate. And his classes can't be missed.
Professor Gold is a daimon in the socratic sense of the word - that subtle but substantial spirit that knits the human and the divine, reason and passion, past and present, theory and practice. If there were a god, s/he would be Dr. Gold. What Donne says of the divine can be said of Dr.Gold: Batter my heart, three-person'd God ; "for you As yet b
Not done yet, but I thought I'd weigh in. This is the hardest class I've ever taken. This is the best class I've ever taken. I've already learned more than the rest of my undergraduate career combined. If you came here to learn, take him. If you came here to coast, take someone else.
If you love english, take this guy because he's a genius and knows alot about literature. If english is not your thing or you want a good grade, do not take this guy. He grades you like your a grad student. Make sure to do the readings.
Professor Gold is the greatest, but sometimes he sticks too closely to his notes. Thomas Frosch.
Indeed the best professor that Fordham has: but for him I would not have learned how to think and write. To Dr. Gold, thinking and writing are interrelated: one thinks thru writing...hence his course is always writing-centered: lots of writing and lots of substantive revising. A fair but not-easy grader. Expect to work as you have never worked. He
Gold is intimidating but awesome. I don't think I've ever learned so much in one class. The class is not easy but it's not impossible to do well. Take really good notes, do the readings and go to him for help with the papers (there's three of them and you have the opportunity to revise them). If you're serious about English I HIGHLY recommend him.
The most difficult English course I've ever taken. It made me question whether I wanted to even be an English major. Definitely not the course for someone with a lame work ethic. Gold is brilliant, but intimidating. Make it a habit to meet with him and it'll really pay off. You'll feel pretty accomplished after finishing this course.
Arguably the most brilliant professor on this planet: very sound and sensitive - a true philosopher and genius who gets us to forge in the smithy of our souls sentences of sweetness and light. The best!!
A genius
Took over our Finnegans Wake class when our other professor died. Despite not getting paid and not really having a stake in the class, he was excellent, bringing tons of resources and offering brilliant insights into the text. Great professor.
Dr Gold is the sharpest professor on Rose Hill Campus and among the brightest academics I have met in a long time. As a former student of his, he was one of two professors who taught me to think and write. But for these two professors,I would still be in Plato's cave: he got me to push myself to think better and write better than I could have done.
Probably the smartest professor I've had thus far at Fordham. Literally, the guys a genius. Although the class is HARD, like really HARD. Meet with him although he is intimidating because he will raise your grade despite how bad you might be doing if you meet with him face to face. He also lets you make a case for what grade you believe you deserve
If ever there were a genius, s/he would be Dr. Gold. No other teacher at Fordham has had the impact on the minds of scores of students that he has had. He doesnt merely push you to think and write better but gets you to push yourself to do both. In a sense, you cannot quite get away from Gold even after the course has ended. The very best professor
Lots of readings, and they're not easy. His theory class is one of the toughest I've taken but you'll get a lot out of it. He's brilliant but difficult.
I think he is among the two best professors of English at Fordham.Unlike most other professors I have had, he finds the time for his students - he IS always there to help you think and re-think and revise. If you really want an an education, turn to him and take his class: it WILL transform you for the better & nowhere will you find another Moshe!
He'll drown you in mindblowing readings and his lectures are excellent, although slightly hard to take organized notes on. He's a crazy hard grader, but he gives endless revisions. I did find his paper feedback frustratingly unclear a lot of the time, and he has a tendency to cut students off before they can finish a thought. You'll learn a lot.
This is the most difficult and most cryptic professor i've ever taken. I love english but theory definitely made me question. Be warned, this is a very difficult class -- you'll learn a lot but probably will want to take another professor if you can. He's very flexible about grades though and will take suggestions.
Moshe is the man, took him theory and madness/horror in film/lit. best professor at fordham. his lectures are so engaging, he is brilliant and can be intimidating, but go to his office hours for one on one. if you (try) to keep up with the readings you'll be fine. He asks you at the end what grade you think you deserve, both times I said A & got it
Probably one of the best Professors at Fordham, and one of the toughest. Life changing doesn't even cover it, if you can survive all the work. Reading work load is comparable to a grad class, and attendance is mandatory for every class. Asks you what you want your final grade to be at the end of the final exam.
Dr. Gold is an outstanding professor. I must say his class is very challenging, but he will be available to help with any concerns you have about the readings or anything class related. I would definitely take him again, he challenges you and makes you step out of your comfort zone.
I learned more in this one Theory class than I have in all my other English classes. As the course moved along, I became a much better writer. He was also always available by email or in his office.
The first two weeks were challenging since I was not used to reading Theory. The course, by the end of the semester, changed the way I think about life and art -- for the better! Excellent. Simply a must.
Dr. Gold is one of the best professors I've had at Fordham. Although he is a tough grader, he will work with you and will push you to become a better student. He challenges you in different areas such as weekly quizzes, journal entries, and essays. He is very caring, polite, smart, and hilarious. Even though he's tough, I 110% recommend taking him.
The best Fordham has ever had so far in decades, if not in a century. Moshe Gold is the rare professor we all long to have but rarely ever do so. I would recommend you take his course if you attend Fordham. I owe him my life and learning. Before Moshe I was nothing but afterwards something more than a clod of clay. He inspired me - quite literally!
If you work, are on the LC Campus, etc., DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS. He literally says, "the only things needed to pass this class are time and effort." He will not understand if don't have time to meet with him frequently or do countless rewrites. The lectures are good, assignments are helpful. I can't tell if he's a genius or just thinks he is.
Fantastic teacher. I learned so much in this class, and I rewrote my papers until I got straights A's. He was always available. The readings, the class, the conferences, the rewrites, all were the best I've had here. Yes; there is a lot to do, but it is sure worth it!!
I am still rereading the essays from this class. This was the best class I have taken. I actually learned so much, and Dr. Gold was an inspiration to me.
Take his Theory class. It's not an easy class, but it will help you a lot in whatever you want to do in life. Skip it if you want a coloring-book degree.
Dr Gold is one of the smartest profs at fordham, hands down. He is also an incredibly caring man, one who is lenient about due dates and the like. He truly cares about his students. He definitely teaches you how to think. That being said, the class is HARD. I respect the hell out of him as a professor and man, but boy it is a challenging class.
Unless you genuinely enjoy working insanely hard, do not take this class. Prof Gold is a nice guy and he cares about his students, but you will be so frustrated by the massive workload, bombardment of emails, and difficult assignments that you won't care. I wished I listened the reviews that talk about how much work this class is.
Literary Theories with Dr. Gold was the hardest course I've taken at Fordham and the most homework I've ever done. BUT, it's also the most I've ever learned and my writing improved more in one semester than in my 2 years at Fordham. He wants you to succeed and at the end of the semester he asks you at what you think your grade should be.
My writing over the course of the semester improved tremendously. I didn't think I would like theory, but Dr. Gold made the course fun, inspirational, and rigorous. Probably the best class I have had at Fordham.
The most caring and brilliant teacher I have ever encountered. He works with every single student in the class. Writing papers for theory is hard work, but he let me revise and revise until I got an "A-" on my papers.
Hands down the best teacher ever! He actually made theory understandable and fun!! A fantastic teacher.
Wow. What a fantastic course! Professor Gold can clarify the most difficult texts! Great course.
Now that one month has passed since I finished the Theories course I can look back and say this was the single most significant course I took at Fordham. Yes, it was difficult. So what? I came to college to learn. He's also quite funny!
Two summers ago I took Professor Gold's Horror Film class. I really appreciated it then, but I have to say that now that I have been watching quite a few movies during Covid, I have grown to love the fact that I took that class. Dr. Gold made me change (in the best way) the way I experience films. What a fabulous class that was! Great teacher!
I read a review here that claimed the work in this class was too hard. This is not true. When I work out I know I need to sweat. When I experience an inspiring and clear teacher, one who treats me like a young scholar, I am willing to exercise my thinking muscles. This teacher made me feel like I was in at Harvard. Brilliant.
There is way too much work in his class. It is like a full-time job. His class is him talking for an hour straight, and even though he does it with enthusiasm the lectures are painfully unengaging. Avoid taking him if you enjoy life, and you want to continue enjoying life.
Gold is a great teacher and loves what he teaches. His lectures can get a little boring most of the time but that depends on if you are interested in what the topic is. TONS of reading. Like lots of reading. A couple of papers here and there but overall this class was ok. I just found it a little boring.
Probably one of the harder, more demanding courses I've taken at Fordham. Lectures are CRUCIAL and your notes need to be pretty impeccable. Weekly quizzes with a LOT of reading - prob 200ish pages a week. However, he is the NICEST man ever. Always gives extensions when asked and loves to meet with students. Totally worth the hard work.
Dr. Gold is the most caring, clear, and inspiring teacher I have had at Fordham. Every English major should take his Theory course. Hard work, but totally worth the effort. Amazing.
Dr. Gold is the kindest professor I've ever met. He actually cares about his students and is always willing to hear you out. That being said, be prepared to work. Every theories class is absolute hell, but Dr. Gold tries his best to make it easy for students. He gives extensions, meets with students to chat about papers, and checks in.
I learned how to actually read literature and write about literature! This professor is amazingly clear, funny, and seriously caring. Excellent!!
No student should take literary theories with another teacher! Professor Gold has taught me to think critically without relying on the authority of others. There was no "agenda" in this class except to learn a wide range of literary theories, so students can pursue their own interests. Fantastic course!!
His lectures are very interesting but be prepared to write/type quickly because he goes over things pretty quickly. There are weekly quizzes but once you finish 10 then youre done. There is group work, 1 collaborative essay. He is very understanding and is willing to give an extension for assignments
Wow. What a fun class. I finished his "short texts" class and it was fantastic. All very short texts. We wrote our own stories as well as writing very short academic papers. We read stories from around the world.
Dr. Gold is a wonderful teacher. So far, he's the best teacher I've had during college here. This "short texts" class was so much better than my composition class. He's also funny! We read so many different kinds of very short texts. I recommend this class to anyone who needs to take Texts and Contexts!
Hands down, the clearest explanations about literary theories I have ever encountered. I heard other comp lit theories classes were boring, dense, and unhelpful. The course was amazing. I learned so much. Definitely take Dr. Gold.
I had been a fan of Flannery O'Connor in High School, but I never realized all the issues concerning race and racism in her writing and background. Wow. I am still a fan of O'Connor's short stories, but Professor Gold opened up a whole range of world writers and critical issues. Definitely take this "short texts" class!! Fabulous discussions.
I basically learned how to write more effectively. The teacher was ALWAYS available to zoom. We were also able to revise everything we wrote. Fantastic teacher.
Great class. So far, the best teacher and the best class I have had at Fordham. If you have any choice, take a class with this teacher!
Dr. Gold is truly a character and cares a lot about teaching. Sometimes the content of the lectures are a little uncomfortable but he tries to use humor to break the ice. Take him if you want a good texts and contexts!
My boy Dr. Gold! Took him for COMP 2 and let me tell you it was definitely my favorite class. His lectures are amazing and he wants all of his students to improve! Take him for COMP 2 if you can but you need to be willing to do the work.
Great teacher. Always ready to meet with students. Fantastic.
Unbelievably great teacher and person. He is willing to spend hours with you discussing your work and the readings. This theories class changed the way I think of school.
Best class at Fordham. Nothing else to say.
Simply the best professor I've had. So passionate about his job, and it is contagious. Our class was heavily based on horror movies and the horror genre, was very interesting. Started out the semester bored and spent all lecture on my phone, eventually I went the whole lecture without my phone, and I'm literally addicted to it. Strongly recommend!
I did not think I would like literary theory, but this professor made theory fun and clear.
I am still rereading the great material he gave us!!
Just finished taking the online Texts & Contexts -- all film! Wonderful! He is always available to zoom.
Best class!
Theory is daunting and tough, but Professor Gold explained everything very clearly. Take him!
Well worth the work. Learned so much in one class. Graduated now, but would even ask him if I could audit future courses. Great and very caring.
Learned more Irish history than ever before! I can now read parts of Finnegans Wake. Amazing.
Best class I took at Fordham. Just amazing.
Most informative professor I have ever met. Wow.
I never ever thought I would be able to read even parts of Joyce's Finnegans Wake. Just an awesome seminar.
Why doesn't this professor teach more grad seminars? This was hands down the best grad seminar I have taken.
Dr. Gold is brilliant and his lectures are interesting, if a bit "off-beat." But he is unable/unwilling to answer simple questions, taking forever to grade things and with unclear criteria. Assignments are tedious and unnecessary. While I did learn some things, I think Dr. Gold isn't the best choice to take for such a sweeping course like Theories.
I was able to revise my work until I got an "A"!! He let me zoom any time I wanted. This was a hard course (in terms of the content), but the professor used humor, pictures, paintings, films, music (etc) to clarify the most difficult theoretical approaches. If you want to learn take this course with this professor.
I have never been prouder than the "A" I received in this Theories course. An inspirational teacher on difficult material. Terrific.
What a great class. It was so much fun. I finally learned how to write a argument essay. Plus the films (horror and comedy) were fabulous. TAKE his class.
Granted, a hard class, but the professor is excellent, clear, and extremely helpful. Do not take literary theories with anyone else! I learned so much. Great!!!
I just graduated so this was my last class. Definitely should have taken Professor Gold's class years ago. This was my favorite class at Fordham. Make sure you take this teacher!
At first I was a bit worried about taking a literary theories class. That said, this was the class at Fordham in which I learned the most! The professor was unbelievably caring, and each of his sessions was inspiration. A MUST TAKE!!!
I wish this professor would offer more graduate classes. So far, this was by far the most inspiring and amazing seminar I have taken at Fordham. Wow.
I just graduated, but I continue to remember this seminar. The professor was the greatest teacher I had at Fordham. What a fantastic class. Anyone who can find a class with this professor should take his class.
I loved Moshe's class - he's a big fan of chocolate (kosher) - so I made sure I always had some on hand :-)
